Today in, OMG I NEED A BREAK FROM EDITING!, we got to talking about Twelve Angry Men and how you could update it for today’s times as well as make it a little less gender-biased.

First off, the location is going to flip from NYC to Los Angeles. There’s a reason for it. The accused needs to be a Latino from South Los Angeles. And Latinos are one of the most persecuted peoples currently in our country. (Also the 1997 remake used an African American, the 1957 film used a white kid from the slums of NYC, let’s change that up.)  For the accused, pick an unknown actor.

So the circumstances are still mostly the same. That doesn’t need to change.

But here’s where it gets interesting -- 

The Foreman/Juror #1 Aisha Tyler: A high school soccer coach; she tries to keep order in the hostile jury room.

Our rationale: Courtney B.Vance was awesome in the role in the 1997 remake. But tell me you can’t picture the woman who can ride herd on Ryan Styles and Colin Mochrie on Whose Line Is It Anyway? and also play an FBI profiler in this role. Let’s have a black woman leading.

Juror #2 Olivia Colman: A meek bank teller who does not know what to make of the case.

If you’d asked us before the Oscars who this would be you would have gotten a shrug. Basically this role can for the most part be cast blindly. The ONLY race I’d be leery of putting here is Asian. Woman is iffy but when contrasted with the other women on the jury it’s fine. In the 1997 movie it was an older black man... so that’s kind of problematic.

Juror #3 Sam Rockwell: A businessman with a hot temper. He has a strained relationship with his son. He is convinced that the defendant is guilty, though it may not be through the facts of the case.

Look at 3 Billboards... the guy could do it. He’s also the right age.

Juror #4 Ming-na Wen: A stockbroker; she is very eloquent and looks at the case more coherently than the other jurors: through facts and not bias. She is appalled at some of the behavior of the other jurors.

This role could also be cast blindly. We had Octavia Spencer here initially. But we realized we didn’t have any East Asians and we have other Black actors. So we changed this one.

Juror #5 Diego Luna: He is from the same area/life as the accused; he connects with the man at trial and is disgusted at the bigotry of Juror 10.

This role needed to go to a Latino actor -- if the defendant is Latino, as we chose to go with. Diego Luna leapt to mind.

Juror #6 Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson: A house painter; he is patient and respectful of what other people have to say.

This also could be blind cast. We initially had Gwendoline Christie here. Then went... no... how about Jason Momoa? Let’s get some Pacific Islander. Then Rose said... how about The Rock... He’s even from California initially. 

Juror #7 Chris Evans: A salesman; he is not concerned at all about the young man on trial, and eager to complete their jury assignment so he can use his tickets to a baseball game that evening. He is impatient and rude, and likes to crack jokes a lot.

You need someone who can be both serious and not be taken seriously. The role really needs to be a dude and a white dude with the entitlement. We picked Chris Evans because shout-out to Captain America! Literally the only reason. John Krasinski would also work well -- we initially had him here before we thought of Chris Evans.

Juror #8 Kal Penn: An architect who is very quiet. He’s a millennial but on the edge of it. He’s got student loans and debt. He is the only one of the twelve who, at first, votes not guilty. He becomes close friends with Juror 9 at the end of the film.

So this was in part inspired by Lark’s boss who is Indian and is a structural engineer. The important part is that we removed the “White Savior” that was present in the 1997 movie. This role also has to be someone with acting chops. Lark legit knows several Indian architects and it’s not quite “model minority.”

Juror #9 Christopher Plummer: A wise old man who sides with Juror 8 and becomes friends with him at the end of the film. His real name is McCardle.

Old white dude is old and white. You could also do Charles Dance or Anthony Hopkins here.

Juror #10 Timothy Hutton: A carwash owner; Trump Supporter, he is a loudmouth, narrow-minded bigot, extremely rude and often interrupts people, who feels that no good thing will come out of the boy's "kind". Ultimately he is shunned from the group with Juror 4 ordering him to "sit down" and to "not open his filthy mouth again."

Tell me that you can’t see Nate from Leverage in this role? This is one of the antagonists. In the 1997 remake the role was that of a Black Nation Muslim man. But that’s problematic. So let’s take it back to what the 1957 movie did and go with a racist.

Juror #11 Shohreh Aghdashloo: An immigrant watchmaker, she believes in justice in America and will see it get done. She is observant of events around her.

We want this role to be a woman in Hijab. For most of the film she’s quiet but when she speaks... oh is it epic. By making her older she can still believe in the system. We also wanted an actress from a Muslim background.

Juror #12 Keegan Michael Key: An ad executive; he is swayed very quickly by others' opinions.

This role could also be blind cast. We wanted to go away from a woman here... the whole women can’t make up their minds trope. But pretty much any ethnicity will work so long as it’s got other representation.

So that’s it. 7 Minorities. 4 Women. 12 Angry People.

This is America and it’s a lot more indicative of what’s going on in today’s society.

“Acomedy Awards” - Recognizing Great Comedies in Film

Welcome to the fourth annual “Acomedy Awards”. If you are as obsessed with movies as I am, then you also know how the greatest of comedies tend to be snubbed at the Oscars. So I took it upon myself to honor those worthy with the list of winners and nominees below.

And don’t worry, La La Land is excluded from these awards.

Best Picture

Winner: The Lobster

Nominees:

20th Century Women Deadpool Don’t Think Twice The Edge of Seventeen Everybody Wants Some!! Florence Foster Jenkins Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping Sing Street Swiss Army Man

This yea brought us a slew of fun and unique comedies. The Lobster wins the top prize because not only was it humorous, it was innovative and thought-provoking. The rest of these nominees are far from traditional. From period piece films like 20th Century Women, Florence Foster Jenkins, and Sing Street, mockumentary Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, coming of age films The Edge of Seventeen and Everybody Wants Some!!,  a comedy about comedy Don’t Think Twice, superhero movie Deadpool, to Swiss Army Man, a film that transcends genres. 

Best Actor

Winner: Ryan Reynolds - Deadpool

Nominees:

Paul Dano - Swiss Army Man Colin Ferrell - The Lobster Seth Rogen - Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising Andy Samberg - Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping

Deadpool wouldn’t be Deadpool without Ryan Reynolds. Not only is he hysterical, he gives a kick-ass performance. Colin Ferrell comes at a close second for his lead performance as an introvert who is running out of time to find his mate in The Lobster. Paul Dano continues to prove that he’s one of the next generation’s strongest actors in Swiss Army Man. And Seth Rogen and Andy Samberg earn lots of belly laughs in Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising and Popstar respectively. 

Best Actress

Winner: Sally Field - Hello, My Name is Doris

Nominees:

Annette Benning - 20th Century Women Chloë Grace Moretz - Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising Hailee Steinfeld - The Edge of Seventeen  Meryl Streep - Florence Foster Jenkins

Sally Field arguably gave one of the most overlooked performances of the year in Hello, My Name is Doris. She stars as a sixty-something neurotic woman who pursues her affection for a coworker half her age. She’ll make you laugh and make you cry. Annette Benning gives her best performance in a past decade as as a aging single mom in 20th Century Women. Chloë Grace Moretz shows off her comedic talents as a feisty college student who starts her own sorority in Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising. Hailee Steinfeld gives a grounded performance as a teen facing an early-life crisis in the high-school dramedy The Edge of Seventeen. And Meryl Streep is brilliant as always in Florence Foster Jenkins. 

Best Supporting Actor

Winner: Daniel Radcliffe - Swiss Army Man

Nominees:

Zac Efron - Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising Simon Helberg - Florence Foster Jenkins Keegan-Michael Key - Why Him? J.K. Simmons - The Meddler

Daniel Radcliffe manages to give a lively performance as he played a dead man who washes up shore in Swiss Army Man. His now-infamous fart scenes alone earn him this honor. Zac Efron reprises his role as a total frat guy who’s now in post-frat life in Neighbors 2. Simon Helberg shines as a humorous pianist who holds his own alongside Meryl Streep in Florence Foster Jenkins. Keegan-Michael Key is a scene-stealer as Gustav, a wacky personal assistant in Why Him?. And J.K. Simmons goes lovable as Susan Sarandon’s motorcycle-riding love interest in The Meddler. 

Best Supporting Actress

Winner: Olivia Colman - The Lobster

Nominees:

Rose Byrne - Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising Tyne Daly - Hello, My Name is Doris   Greta Gerwig - 20th Century Women Kyra Sedgwick - The Edge of Seventeen 

Olivia Colman is brilliantly hilarious as the dead-serious hotel director in The Lobster. Rose Byrne reprises her role as a mother who tries to dismantle the sorority next door in Neighbors 2. Tyne Daly gives a strong performance as Doris’s best friend in Hello, My Name is Doris. Greta Gerwig gives a memorable performance as the free-spirit Abbie in 20th Century Women. And Kyra Sedgwick plays a hilariously controlling mother in The Edge of Seventeen. 

Best Director

Winner: Yorgos Lanthimos - The Lobster

Mike Birbiglia - Don’t Think Twice Kelly Fremon Craig - The Edge of Seventeen  Dan Kwan & Daniel Scheinert - Swiss Army Man Richard Linklater - Everybody Wants Some!!!

So many breakthrough directors this year, but Yorgos Lanthimos is a step above the rest for his work on The Lobster. He seized the humor in an artistically dreary aesthetic and helped give some of the the year’s best comedic performances from his fantastic cast. Mike Birbiglia captured the realism of what its like to be in an improv comedy troupe in Don’t Think Twice so well, it felt like a documentary. The Edge of Seventeen director Kelly Fremon Craig put together an emotional teenage comedy that would have made John Hughes proud. Dan Kwan & Daniel Scheinert have directed the beautifully strange Swiss Army Man that masterfully changes tone from one scene to the next. And Richard Linklater managed to create another comedic time capsule in the 1980-set Everybody Wants Some!!. 

Best Screenplay

Winner: Yorgos Lanthimos, Efthymis Filippou - The Lobster

Nominees:

Kelly Fremon Craig - The Edge of Seventeen Dan Kwan & Daniel Scheinert - Swiss Army Man Richard Linklater - Everybody Wants Some!! Nicholas Martin - Florence Foster Jenkins

Lanthimos and Filippou wrote a brilliant screenplay. In The Lobster, they combined a dark, original dystopic future with fantastic deadpan humor. Kelly Fremon Craig wrote one of the sharpest, coming of age movies in recent memory with The Edge of Seventeen. With something as original as Swiss Army Man, The Daniels had to be nominated. Linklater is one of the greatest screenwriters of our time and Everybody Wants Some!! is one his greatest works. And Nicholas Martin wrote a fun, music-filled screenplay for Florence Foster Jenkins.
