The house you grew up in had secret passages?? 👀

technically only one was truly a secret passage, but I like to count the easily visible trapdoor-accessible loft anyway because unlike a typical trapdoor-accessible attic the loft was two parts on two sides of the house and the only way to the second half was an honest-to-god indoor wooden bridge.

The true secret passage was actually the door to the only bathroom, which was a sliding bookcase. It was a tiny house and when it was being built the options were "will we use this space for a bookcase, or a bathroom door?" and the answer was "yes"

#I grew up in a very strange and mildly illegal (nobody told the city it was being built) house #in later years everyone claimed it had been on the property since before the family bought it in the early 70s #in the winter we'd wrap the porch in canvas and use space heaters to turn it into another room #to host family banquets #we had a 26 person thanksgiving on that porch once #the backdoor of the house was also in the bathroom but we didn't use it because it was a straight four foot drop into stinging nettles #and the stairs has been removed years prior #the whole house was wood-heated #I have a lot of nostalgia for that house even though it was much too small for our family #and it was best we got a place with more than one bathroom #and that didn't have the bathtub in the pantry #ask #okayto

13. Have you ever received hate on a fic?

Not as far as I can remember! I've occasionally received comments that made me go ??? but I'm not sure that I've ever even received unsolicited critique.

(It's normally considered rude to offer unsolicited constructive criticism on people's for-fun writing, but I actually appreciate and welcome constructive criticism when it's offered in good faith. I need to know where I can get better, damn it.)

Actually wait, I think one time someone told me that a DWJ fic of mine on ff.net was... I forget what they said, it was a vague and relatively mild criticism. I replied politely asking if they could elaborate, but when pressed for details they retracted their statement, leaving me to go, okay, I guess I will not be improving on my writing today.

17. Are there any writers and/of stories that you consider an influence?

Oh for sure! Any writer I've ever written fan stuff for sure, so Martha Wells and Diana Wynne Jones and a whole bunch of other sff novelists... but also special shoutout to Austin Walker of Friends at the Table podcast, everything about how that show is run + the music + the way the music entwines with the spoken word + Austin Walker's FUCKING monologues, fuck, it's great. I have a whole playlist that's nothing but Austin Walker monologuing. Anytime I have to write about robots (all the time) I hear the twinned lines "We could have made them look like anything, but we made them look like us" and "We weren't building mirrors, we were setting fires" and it makes me wanna scream for the heavens. Huge influence on how I write first-person narration, and quite possibly the reason that it's now hard to write Murderbot POV as the two styles are very different XD

As for fanfic, the two biggest influences on my writing are @iztarshi and @blessphemy hands down. Probably wouldn't have kept writing without Iztarshi, and every time I see bless do something new and cool with the medium of text I go YOOOO and wanna see how I can bend it to my own purposes.

What are you currently reading/what is the last book you read?

Currently reading Throne of Glass by Sarah J Maas. As a bonus, the other library books I got this week are Packing for Mars by Mary Roach and The Twisted Ones by T Kingfisher, since I kind of mentally label all my library books as "currently reading" when I get them

8. What’s your favorite “elusive” series? (i.e., the series that most people haven’t heard of)

Oooo, this one took a bit because I tend to find new books through recommendations. However, I'm going with Dragon Slippers by Jessica Day George. I'll be honest and say I've only read the second and third books like once, but I own the first book and it's been one of my favorites for years. Probably should do another reread of it soon

Wondering whether this is a bug I should report: or an actual thing I can’t find settings for: I have a mutual from whom I never get notifications anymore, for likes or reblogs. I used to, months ago. And I know that they’re interacting with my posts because I can see their reblogs of my posts on my dash, or sometimes I’ll be looking at a post’s notes and see that they liked it but that never appears on my activity page. But it makes me wonder how many other things I’m missing notifications for from people who I don’t follow.

currently reading Second in the Matthew Swift series, The Midnight Mayor by Kate Griffin. am patiently taking note of any imagery that I can turn into a clay sculpture or put on a mug. (The brand on the hand cross-within-a-cross is an obvious contender, but I prefer to avoid iconography that might reference a real-world non-MSwift thing.)

last song god neon / god neon knows ... the grass is always greener but the city's got a hold on me. Something tickled a brain neuron or two a few weeks back and I went looking for a MSwift playlist, and it turned out @chimaerakitten had already picked out some BANGERS. And did the playlist cover design too, I think? Another incredible graphic design that I want to put on a mug or maybe a shotglass.

last series been making my way through the Mushishi series and Cowboy Bebop with my anime watch buddies :3 they're both very episodic fare but otherwise, as expected, vastly different in tone. Some of Cowboy Bebop's jokier episodes weird me out but the one with the Actual Cowboy (really a rich man playing at danger) did genuinely make me laugh. I've otherwise been enjoying the cultural touchstone for Space Heists; it makes me nostalgic for running forged in the dark games.

last movie Everything Everywhere All At Once, second watch-through with my sister and the openness of the ending struck me as much bleaker this time. Like damn, Evelyn's really gonna be stuck with cosmic ADHD for the rest of her forseeable future, huh.

currently working on god what am I not working on. It's easiest to talk about my clay projects: an egg-shaped rattle that I still need to cut open and fill with beads and finish trimming, six slab-built mug forms that need bottoms and handles and underglazing (three of them are spoken for), a rocket ship sculpture that keeps getting more complicated the more I mess with the project (I added a fucking removable bottom compartment like an idiot and i KEEP forgetting to check if my studio has a spirit level I can use when I go to add the fins/leg stands!! ugh), a big cup and a little cup that need glazing, a teddy bear piggy bank that needs two more layers of glaze and to buy a cork to fit into his top hat. This doesn't include pieces that I recently finished and just need to pick up from the kiln, pieces that I'm in the process of mailing (I swear they're getting mailed out soon i PROMISE) or pieces in the planning stage. whew.

this doesn't include my writing projects either, lmao. mother fuck there's not enough time in the day
