Toddler - Smelling Jars
In the Sensorial area of a Montessori classroom, there is a work called The Smelling Jars. These jars call to the child's sense of curiosity as they can smell through the small holes but cannot see inside of them. There are two sets of matching scents that the students must go through and match. This strengthens their sense of smell, or olfactory sense, while fostering concentration and memory.

the center in our brains that processes the ofactory sense (smell) is very close, physically, to the center that process short term memory into long term memory. Since our brains run on electro-chemical signals, sometimes the firing of a neuron in one center gets recieved by a neuron in the other.
It's why the sense of smell can trigger memories, they get encoded together. Kind of.
Interesting that English has very few words for particular smells. We can only describe scents in experiences.

Kinda structured this like my autistic BNHA post!
Here are the characters I generally think fall in the spectrum: Kageyama, Ushijima, Tsukishima, Aone, Kenma (trust me there are more, I can and have thought of every single character being on the spectrum at least once)
Kageyama is probably an elementary school diagnosis.
He has a special interest in volleyball although that goes without saying
He is definitely a tactile stimmer. I can see him with one of those spinner rings!
Ushijima was probably diagnosed 3-4. He was verbal in time with his age but he wasn’t meeting certain social development markers
Another person with a special interest in volleyball!
He’s also a tactile stimmer. Prefers the texture of things like sand and slime/putty
 i’ve already said this but Tsukishima’s safe food/ go to meal is fries and nuggets. Specifically the smiley face french fries and the dinosaur nuggets (yes they do taste different)
He rarely strays from his safe foods
He probably got diagnosed late in middle school and gives me internalized ableism vibes (there are a lot of people who are late diagnosis who struggle with internalized ableism)
Auditory stimmer primarily with songs/music.
He had a special interest in dinosaurs and volleyball to a much lesser extent
Aone was diagnosed at 2-3 because he was way behind developmentally when it came to speech. He probably didn’t start talking till he was like 3.5 or 4
Primarily nonverbal. Thats it that’s the whole point
Visual stimmer!! Paint mixing videos and those slime videos where people mix glitter into slime. Vocal stimmer too!
Specifical interest in reptiles!!
Kenma is another one who very rarely stays away from his safe foods
He will only drink four flavors of monster energy: Pipeline punch, mango loco, original, and ultra red
Special interest in video games!! Timeskip!Kenma owns all of the nentendo consoles and is on a mission to own functioning versions of all the games. 
(Timeskip!Kenma also owns a MAME cabinet)
Tactile stimmer? Likes the feeling of pressing the buttons on a handheld game. Also an ofactory stimmer. He just really enjoys the way certain things smell

WEEK 3: Reflection, Research and Analysis
Reflection: Based of Thursday class’ site visit, I have really set my sight on working at Capitol Theatre (especially after experiencing previous students’ works - particularly Zac who also chose to address the word ‘hypnagogic’ for his project). I was surprised to see that there was a lot I could accomplish with lighting alone (as well as sound). I aim to download and familiarise myself Pharos of the course of this week also. takeaways from the site visit to Capitol Theatre was that with the controlled speed and colours of the lighting I would be able to create an optical illusion of the room shifting back and forth. From Zac’s work specifically, I really like his use of slow flashes on/off from the ceiling which could create the transitioning state between wakefulness and sleep. I also interpreted this motion as representing rapid eye movement (REM) which I will discuss later in the technical research (how hypnagogia works) 
After this week’s presentation, I was also advised to check out the works, ‘Baa Baa Land’, Béla Tarr’s ‘SÁTÁNTANGÓ’ and Stan Brakhage’s works while will be the source of creative influence and research this week.
Also from the site visit, this time to the ‘Black Box’, I found Pierre’s works incredibly interesting, in regards to a sense of rhythm (randomised or not), sound and colour. Pierre also mentioned he took inspiration from composer Steve Reich regarding audio. From surface-level research I have also found Reich uses a lot of repetition in his pieces and I could definitely see that tying into the concept of deep-time. I also feel like a use of keyboard synth and the futuristic/alternate dimension it gives could be powerful. I would love to further investigate this in next week’s blog entry. 
Technical Research: How hypnagogia actually works, envisioning hypnagogic colours:
Mavromatis’ dissertation (Mavromatis 1987) describes hypnagogia that as a state that involves (of the visual cortex) “loosening of ego boundaries...openness, sensitivity...of the physical and mental environment (empathy)” when one is transitioning to sleep and serving as an “intermediate phenomenon between REM dreams and hallucinations” known as NREM. During NREM sleep where hypnogogia tends to occur, “sensory information continues to be transferred and encoded in a similar way to the brain when awake at the level of primary cortices”. This “cortical responsivity” is what significantly contributes to hypnagogic phenomenas (Waters et. al 2016)  These phenomenas can be categorised as:  Visual: kaleidoscope patterns that are changing, “geometric patterns, shapes ...light flashes...imagery involving animals, people and faces...scenes that are...highly detailed and colo(u)rful” (Waters et. al 2016)  Sound: varying intensity from faint to loud noises i.e knocking, calling of one’s name, imagined (nonsensical and fragmented) speech (Mavromatis 1987) Less common phenomenas recorded also include: gustatory (sense of taste) sensations, ofactory (sense of smell) sensations, thermal (perception of temperature) sensations (Mavromatis 1987) The one most interesting to me however, was the associated phenomena of synesthesia which could be responsible for the perception and association of certain colours to imagery (and/or sound) that is commonly perceived in hypnagogic imagery. This synesthesia experience is also personalised and perhaps what makes each hypnagogic experience unique from one another.

Both of the examples I’ve chosen from Stan Brakhage this week are starkly different in their use of material. The first work chosen, ‘Comingled containers’ is light and fluid. Projecting an image of translucent and spherical (organically shaped) beings that I was led to think of jellyfish in the ocean which could project that calm state of hypnagogia. In contrast, the second chosen work from Brakhage, "..." REEL FIVE is significant faster in frame transitions, over-exposed in colour with harsh, ragged lines that move about haphazardly. This, like the piece ‘HYPNAGOGIA’ by Pierre-Luc Vaillancourt mentioned as an example in this week’s presentation creates a heart-palpitating and tense state of affect in contrast to the calm experienced in ‘Comingled containers’. 
I think with a careful consideration for material that I want to use in my video piece, the tempo of sequences and scenes in the video and accompanying audio could make for 2 stimulating and contrasting pieces that depict unique hypnagogic experiences, one from either end on the Circumplex Model of Affect.

Technical Research: Deep Time Deep-time: From the feedback I received from my presentation this week, I was encouraged to look into the concept of deep time and how it has the power to subconsciously make you lose track of time i.e. binging shows and contrarily how deep time can get ‘boring’ and maddening to a degree, making one painfully aware of how long a project has gone on for or how long they themselves have been situated in a certain time/space. I was further recommended to check out films ‘Baa Baa Land’ and ‘SÁTÁNTANGÓ’.

‘Baa Baa Land’ addresses that sort of calm and almost meditative state of hypnagogic experiences I touched on in last week’s presentation. The 8-hour slow-motion film has not only engendered a sort of love for sheep from me but the lack of changing shots (if I am correct the shortest shot was around 15 minutes while longer shots lasted for 1hr+ i.e the opening hour sequence) and unwavering camera movement really pulled me into the slow-motion film. These two concepts contribute to creating deep time and is definitely something I want to think about bringing into my project i.e. slow, unwavering changes in lighting of Capitol Theatre. The slow-motion nature of the film is also satisfying to watch and a stark contrast to modern-day cinema where with the digitalisation and mobility of media i.e. Netflix, plots seem to be shorter, less satisfying and lacking a sort of continuity. 
SÁTÁNTANGÓ

In a similar fashion, Béla Tarr’s ‘SÁTÁNTANGÓ’ is a black-and-white film that is nearly 8 hours long also. Each shot in the film is approx. 2.5 minutes long (whilst in contemporary shot in a Hollywood film is approx 2.5 seconds). What I found interesting about this film was its repetition of scenes/recurring moments with small changes i.e. a character would leave earlier in a different perspective of a recurring scene than they did in another. Alongside that, the lateral camera work* expands the horizon of the set space and gives off an illusion of space. As seen in the clip above also, Estike is seen walking towards the camera whilst the camera gradually pans away from her also creating a nifty vertigo effect. This vertigo effect is something I want to consider in my final piece also and possibly having that vertigo effect play on loop could be a utilisation of deep time that is oddly both satisfying and unsatisfying at once.
*an interesting example of lateral camera work is also Stan Brakhage’s ‘The Wonder Ring’, especially the warping of the train and adjacent buildings through glass

their leader for guidance, all along the treeline, creatures both large and small cowering beneath my finty gaze, twin chips of ice peering out from my coyote skin cloak guest cabin habt with the snowmen before i attempt to speak and let him know im right behind him im close enough i could bayonet him and must resist the urge my voice cracks in an attempt to say helo from long under use thought i was going to get fired, and nearly dd, but ater he asked about everything that went on and seeing that tha ranch was in perfect order he decided that as long as i showared i could keap the look and we incorporated a whole "mountain man workshop" for the guests, teach them a lttle bushcrat, simple survival stuf and i got a raise out of t. i)00 23.10 No 1:17:42 No.20980609 (36 KB i would summer with some kind of a musk to it as well -crouching in my snow hut i pull out my monocular and scan the treeline on the other side of the pasture to the south, that last coyote i bagged was in that direction i find the spot where i had skinned it out, and i know right where the carcass should be i look down the the horses and can see them ail still looking in that direction, not moving no neighs or even nervous wickering between them > pop open the ammo can i keep up there, grab a few fresh stripper clips to tuck into my coat and slide down the slope i set next to the stairs on the north side of the bam snowghost my way along the fence line still keeping my ears open, the smell has faded somewhat, but the musk still lingers like greasy ingerprints on a reshly poished 1911 at a store malke my way to the southen Sence lne, al i can make out is the faint indentations of where snow has fallen to cover my tracks from two days ago yards away, c decide tuck it and walk over to where the coyote was, i can see the drag marks clearly, right over the tracks of whatever grabbed it stracks are deep, but obscured by the drag and whatever took it left by the same path i arrived, cutting east, deeper into the woods, you go far enough and you hit the bob marshall that deep musky scent is stil strong, sticks in your nose the the ofactory equivalent of peanut butter stuck to the roof of your mouth, but not nearly as tasty can see from the way the tracks are spaced whatever it was had a long, bipedal stride, sinking almast twice as deep as my own bootprints into the snow fuly intended to leave the carcass tor scavengers and the like, but seems we have a new player n the game made my way back to the bam,horses are stil fiocated on the southerm pasture line, figure ill stock a few provisions in the haylaft othis marks the start of many a night spand buried in the warm hay pretty used the the night noises around the place, coyotes yowing, maybe a cat screetch and owls caling out dead fucking sience, even the horses kept close to the bam and quiet as snowal didnt get much sleep that night, that musky smell had finally worn off by about dark next few days were uneventful, not a whole hell of a lot happening. second wave of snow fascists attemped to take the stronghold that is my snow fortress and were repelled by a wave of glorious 7.62x54 musk smell slamming crouched low and took a snow trench to the bam stairs and made my way fort, peering over the edge i could see something movng by the treeline down had dark brown fur coering t at least thats what it looked ike, it stayed low whle it moved othe head appeared elongated ending in a blunt muzzle, almost like a bear, but almost like if you took a rottweilers head, took off the ears, scaled R up and covered it in coarse brown hair a deer fronm son of a bitch, that one was MINE exe and its up and looking around, stil with a slight hunch but this thing is BIG, like &- after a momenttgrabs its prize around the nock with a single long arm and takes of into the woods again, i give it a whle before investigating fuck trying to find this thing in >茁the same time, im pissed this thing has the GALL to malest my territory, a strange thought comes into my mind this is my tentory ill mark it how i like, right slong where ts tracks go from the treeline to the clearing before the fence, i piss all along it, took a steaming dump right in one of its foot prints over the next couple af days wat and observe the whole time i cant shake the feeing that im being watched as well also starting to figure out why the boss managed to buy this ranch bunk house making some combread to go with my chǔ when i hear the horses start raising 9 lands of hell, 2 types of chaos and a side of mayhem throw on my coat, grab my mosin and afix the bayonet as i charge out the door towards the corrals in almost knocked ormy feet by the smell first of. smells like a wookie in heat, but i cant see anything looming まof the growing darkness o i make it the main corral attached to the bam and i can see all the horses are panicking, shying away from one side of the comal, the one part of > cant be sure but i would bet money ts he head of the same one i saw it take a few days ago, trn of the neck、just below the head -looking to the treeline i can see a form fading into the pines >bury the head and get the horses calmed down, head back to the cabin othis spooked my horses, made me bum my combread and kiled a deer in MY temitory the next day i keep an eye out, head towards the northem pastures and manage to back another coyote, but i bring the whole carcass back with me this time mother fucker >skin it out carefully, made sure to leave the guts intact, save the hide for later use and bury the carcass underneath some old straw to let it ripen bloated and mpe cayote gather a few pine bows and use an E tool, did a bed to lie down in, cover my tracks with the pine boughs and line the bed with position to the bam and ranch seemingly satisfed, it stepped out of the trees, crouched and moved towards the coyote, i wated as it got closer 30 s15 sucking in as much air as i could i leap from my concealed position, bringing my mosin up over my head and shouted for all i was worth that sound that came out ofl me i dont think i could ever replicate, Ei did it would have t everything was contained in that scream, every shouted order to for bayonets and charge, every screaming bails on fre rush across no mans land, every howl of fury as blades met, and every roar of primitive fury that another dare take what is mine stopping dead in its tracks i reared up to its full teerible height, almost twice mine in boots and coyote coat >summoning up another shout i shouldered the rifle and took a pace forward, how, i dont know, i was ready to piss mysef with my own stupidity this was something alse, this was a force of nature, and i was going to stand aganst it File ducking its head it glared at me with those obsidian orbs of primordial hunger, this creature was contesting its claim s own, the bass loose the tenuous hold i had u ears i couldet move forward everything in me was screaming to cut an run, but as i stood there gazing down the abused wooden length mosin, the dings and pts in the stock stood dont lonow how, i dont know why, but i took strengh in that, this weapon had faced monsters before, faced an unstoppable machine and brought with a snort of fetid breath it moved to take another step forward anawering with another cro-magnon hol i stode forward, standing over the offending ple of guts that had become the Ine in the snow a scarce few yards from me stood a creature out of forgotten legends, a nightmare made mandest glaring at me with hatred a low rumbling growl bat that i could feal in my chest as its lips skinned back over foul teeth in twisted parody of a grin, baring teeth that had no business in even an over sized goats mouth a third primitive scream escaped my lips as i sighted just over its shoulder and ired my mosin erupted from the i stepped forward, past the coyote, and raised the rifle above my head, stretching upwards on the balls of my feet for as much extra height i could muster, screaming at the top of my lungs for whatever reason, that was enough, backing up and fnally tuning around, it stalked off into the woods somehow deep down in that primitive part of my bran knew i had won, but the ratonal part of my brain stil wanted to piss myself 02/19/16(Fr003 40 50 № 28981350 the barn with a bottle never came across another kill anywhere on the property ater that, found tracks, but never aywhere near the perimeter clearing between the fence and the tree line. even sighted it from a distance a few times after that, but alwarys from a long ways i made the barest mention to the boss ater he had been back for awhile, but he just chalked it up to al the other crazy shenanigans id been up too while i held down the fort for 2 months, but wasnt realy interested. tried talking to a few tribal elders, but none of them wanted anything to do with me thats pratty much it for spooky stones from that tima gave each other a fairly wide berth.

Although a bizarre concept, the visualisation of the sources of smell provide an interesting documentary approach giving food smell - colour, paths, blending, volume. However, to consider the visualisation an animated documentary approach, it is lacking in sound signifiers.
