Finally saw the SBS where Oda confirms what jobs the Straw Hats would have if they lived in the real world and I cannot take this seriously. Like is he aware that most of these character's jobs are things people do in the real world?? Archeologist, meteorologist/cartographer, doctor, chef, rock star, these are real jobs. Why wouldn't they have the same jobs?? Truly baffling on every level. I refuse to accept any of these as canon.

Anyway here's my objectively correct take:

Luffy: Urban explorer. He posts stuff online but it's all really sporadic and not polished at all. Despite that he still has a moderate yet dedicated following. Not that he cares about having a following. Has broken so many laws it's ridiculous but always manages to get away. Probably lives out of a van, but despite this he does not have a driver's license. Makes money in underground fighting tournaments, but it's not about the money. Spends his free time hanging out with his friends.

Nami: Meterologist and cartographer, like she has a degree, but her "job" is being a storm chaser who has a massive tiktok + youtube following. Zeus is her assistant. The rest of the Straw Hats feature in her videos or tag along sometimes. Probably also takes sponsorships but she does vet them pretty well, and gives a lot of money to charity. Works with her family on their tangerine farm in her off time.

Zoro: Master swordsman that hangs out at his old sensei's dojo giving weird advice to the noobs, but has a "side gig" as a vigilante bcs he gets into fights with creeps at the bars he hangs out at. Luffy, Nami, and the rest of their friends are often present for these asskicking sessions, though it's mostly Luffy. Sleeps in his free time, usually in the back of or on top of Luffy's van. No one knows where he lives or if he even has an apartment in the first place. Tags along when Luffy goes exploring bcs Luffy has no idea how to be safe and someone has to make sure he doesn't end up dead on the floor of some abandoned building or stranded at the top of a cellphone tower.

Sanji: Owns a food truck ever since Zeff fired him. Probably still parks near the Baratie most days(and gets into shouting matches with Zeff when he notices), but he travels around the city. He wants to open his own restaurant but it's slow going bcs he doesnt make anywhere near as much money as he could since he keeps giving free food to pretty ladies and people who are down on their luck. Still, he always manages to scrape by. Typical yelp review says the atmosphere is shit but the food is phenomenal. Doesn't have a lot of free time but spends what he does with his friends. Terminally bitchless.

Usopp: Mad scientist who spends a third of his time building wild shit in his garage, a third working in his garden, and the rest as a playing competitive Fortnite and Overwatch. Has a small but VERY dedicated twitch following. Also he def posts bs on reddit and no one can tell if he's lying or not bcs he really is just that out there.

Chopper: Med student. Doesn't get taken as seriously as he deserves but his teachers love him. He also spends a large portion of his time patching up his friends. And he's a furry. Also I could see him having a small blog where he reviews theme parks. Spends the rest of his time hanging out with his friends.

Robin: Professional archeologist and historian. Could be tenured but she's too much of a wild card for that. Def has a criminal past but doesn't talk about it that often. Absolutely can kill a person in like 10 different ways. No one has any idea why she hangs out with a bunch of weirdos but she seems happy so w/e. Follows SO many pet blogs and tags along with Chopper when he hits the parks. Also does yoga.

Franky: Automotive mechanic who specializes in absolutely absurd modifications. Like flamethrowers and shit. Probably wants to build some sort of car mecha but no one can tell if he's serious or not. Has been banned from most places of buisness bcs he refuses to wear pants. Can be found hanging around Sanji's food truck or with Luffy and his van, constantly begs them to let him do wild shit to both. Sanji says no. Luffy says yes.

Brooke: Lead of a popular local band. They sell out concerts and he has a respectable YouTube channel where he posts covers and original stuff(though he's old and the others have to help him with computer stuff). Is hardly ever seen without his massive dog Laboon, who also is the band's mascot.

Jimbe: Bro he's retired(used to be a union leader and an activist) and spends most of his time ferrying Luffy around in his van. Also helps Nami out and has def saved her life a few times. Her audience adores him, which he gets a kick out of, but he doesn't have any social media of his own. A bit of an adrenaline junkie but it comes and goes. Surfs and does martial arts in his free time, but his priority is to enjoy life and have fun with his friends.

honestly its a thing thats more convenient to ignore because killer really doesnt deserve to be broken for the rest of his life...(in my head kid asked law nicely and law took out the effects out of him or him and chopper n marco cooked up an antidote thatd be enough for him and the rest of the country idc lol)

but i did get really excited about a jailed ass kid being devastated that he let killer down, that one page that focuses on it is the single coolest wano moment for me. almost got me thinking arc is worth it til narrative got distracted and told me another backstory of characters ive never seen and wont ever see again

edit: how it would change i dont think it should but i want kid to act pathetic because killer never got fucked up like that before. killer maybe wants to yell at him to get himself together but kid has a gentle soul under all that rough exterior. they better seal it with a deep "im still here" kiss and hold each other

i haven't seen any criticisms about this, so idk if it's an unpopular opinion or not, but i actually like that oda draws yamato like he draws his cis female characters. i mean, yamato deserves muscles, but that's true of pretty much every female character as well so. we'll set that aside for now

kiku passes pretty well. oda basically draws her like he draws cis women, and it is refreshing as hell to see a transfem character who /isn't/ a transmisogynist caricature

but in yamato's case, i like that he's curvy with big tits because.. everyone still recognizes him as man. he doesn't have to pass, he doesn't have to look like the cis male characters. his body is unaltered, he seems pretty comfortable with it, and he's a man and everyone knows it. he's welcomed in the men's bath. even his shitty ass father uses his correct pronouns

this is a nuanced subject ofc and trans people's experiences are many and varied and our representation should reflect that. but in line with that, there are trans people who don't pass, or who can't pass, or who don't care about passing. there are trans people who don't really feel compelled to change their bodies

and it's nice to see a trans character like that, personally. yamato has a body that most people consider female but he is unapologetically male and no one questions his manhood. he is how he is and he is a man

heres my reaction to finishing beast (spoilers obviously) (this is turning out really long I'm just shoving all of my theories and analysis ideas in it without organization)

I'm going to make a separate post with some panels that absolutely destroyed me

Why didnt dazai tell chuuya about the beast world secrets instead of atsushi and akutagawa!!! if only two people can know he could have told chuuya and they could have protected the world for oda together (I am actually crying over this)

they still could have made atsushi and akutagawa partners if it was that important chuuya deserved better

buttttt chuuya is such a small part of this universe and I understand the story asagiri decided to tell. I just wish dazai was a different kind of person and made different decisions. their relationship is strange but I dont doubt that dazai could have manipulated it to be something capable of that

why did dazai come up with this horrible convoluted long term plan of abusing and traumatizing atsushi and akutagawa ober years to get them together for one fight and tell them the truth. dazai is so bizzare and perplexing

he isnt canon dazai, he just saw canonzais memories and ran with it. he saw how much oda meant to dazai and decided to protect the world where he was alive and happy at the expense of everyone else, including himself. if only oda knew the sacrifices dazai made on his behalf.

Mori taking over the orphanage and being a good guy and stepping up as atsushis father?? dazai cared at least a little about atsushi clearly, he let him and kyoka go to the light before he killed himself and set up mori to care for him. he knew atsushi would be upset after his death and accounted for that in his plan. hes not completely heartless and distant like he seems

he saw canonzais memories and set out to find atsushi and akutagawa and fabricate something similar to canon but why did make the changes he did? no way he saw canon universe and decided to switch atsushi and akutagawas positions for fun. did he see how akutagawa turned out in canon and decide he'd be better off not being raised in the mafia? was it out of curiosity about atsushis character and how he'd be if he was trained in the mafia? was it a decision in the moment he met akutagawa and decided to go with atsushi instead?

atsushi isn't as wholly internally pure as canon and fanon imply. when hes put in the environment he excels as a high ranking mafia member, killing people with seemingly no regret. yet he still finds and deeply cares for kyoka, and obviously cares for dazai (clearly shown when hes killing himself). canon akutagawa is a very lonely character, but even put in his place atsushi finds people to care about. so maybe there is some deep intrinsic love and care about him, even if he was trained or manipulated or grew to excel in his position in the mafia.

I'm still hung up on how dazai saw canonzais memories and decided to sacrifice even people canonzai cared about for odas sake. because other people got to have happy universes and oda only had that one? so even if he hurt atsushi, who canon him cares about, its okay bc hes happy in other universes and oda needs to be happy in at least one?

I dont remember much about beast soukoku, there really isn't much about them, but I do truly wonder why dazai didnt tell chuuya about the book. atsushi and akutagawa wouldnt have needed to be hurt so bad and hed be able to stay alive and personally protect odas universe. even if hes empathetically challenged and doesnt care much about using and hurting others, why wouldnt he prefer to personally know about and protect the universe? why does he trust leaving it to atsushi and akutagawa?

So I see some ppl complaining about Law having leg hair because "he hasnt had it before in official art".

Facts are that Oda has not once drawn Law as an adult baring his legs, and knowing Oda he puts a lot of thought into his character designs and their details. If he decided that Law had leg hair then Law was intended to have leg hair from the start. Animators, merch artists, etc didn't know this detail so they just assumed his legs were hairless but they were wrong. Also, Law has facial hair and other characters in OP with facial hair usually have hairy legs too so idk why this is a surprise, I already predicted this would be the case. He's a hairy boy and doesnt deserve this body hair shaming treatment smh (clothes shaming is ok though)

tetsu tachibana, for the character ask?

How I feel about this character I MISS HIM i recently replayed 0 to get the legend achievement (as well a few hidden achievements i missed the first go around) and i teared up at some of the scenes with him.... tachikiryu server has renewed my love for him... i am very well fed.

All the people I ship romantically with this character pretty much just kiryu, tbh. he doesnt have many good ship options lol oda's there. and while oda is hot. hes also terrible. so he doesnt deserve it. i did read one really good post-y0 au fic with tachibana/kiryu/majima that i thought was very cute. it was mostly kiryu stuck between tachibana and majima, rather than tachibana/majima, but what interactions they did have were amazing. would love to see that polyship expanded upon, ESPECIALLY tachibana/majima!!

My favorite non-romantic relationship for this character* thinking about it... tachibana doesnt really interact with anyone other than kiryu and oda. there are mentions of him interacting with kazama off-screen but thats literally it... i could put kiryu and tachibana here, because i do also enjoy them as friends. especially if you consider kiryu reconnecting with old friends after getting out of prison. i also want to put makoto here. man. there isnt much a canon relationship here, but just the idea of it... i want them to see each other. please let the siblings interact, rgg. stop breaking families apart...

My unpopular opinion about this character i havent read enough opinions on him to know whats unpopular lmao... maybe a weird opinion? but if y0 started differently, ie kiryu not leaving the family, he would have made an AWESOME villain. a civilian matching the yakuza in levels of power and influence, as well as fighting prowess?? come on. thats badass. super intimidating too, when you consider his whole omniscient working-in-the-shadows schtick.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon. NOT FUCKING DYING ???? NOBODY LIKED THAT !!!! literally like, if you can work makoto into kiwami 2, you can do SOMETHING that doesnt involve killing the majority of the main cast just because its a prequel and they dont show up in later games. even just a quick mention of how he's doing off in a different city or something. a substory maybe where you hunt down the last of his enemies... cmon man. throw us a bone here.....

As a Sanji fan, I am always seeing many ships done on him, some are reeeeeeally weird🙄, but I will mention two of the three major ships.

Remember this: I am not saying no way. I am saying not enough.

1. Violet

So... you are telling me you are shipping her with Sanji because of this:

Because of just one panel where we see her blushing, you immediately believe she fell in love with him?

So you are willing to completely look over what happened before:

Because of one blushing panel, you completely erased this from your memory. Just beacuse he is Sanji doesnt mean that he is not human.

If it was not for Sanji’s chivalry and kindness Violet wouldn’t have gave two shits. What has she done for Sanji to deserve him at this point?

Absolutely nothing that great to be mentioned.

Told him that his ship is being attacked? Sanji was already on his way to the ship as he told Zoro, she was the main reason he is late to begin with.

Even from her perspective, despite knowing her own past of course, Sanji is too pure for her.

Is a hot body or a blush is enough for a ship nowadays? And in a manga like One Piece?!

Yes, Pudding is implied to become a better person later on. But aren’t you a bit hasty? Wasn’t that really quick of you to ship them?

After all what Sanji has did for her and other women, what is it about her that makes her deserve him? I don’t see it...

Her best quality, that many of you think is “perfect” for Sanji, is making sweets?! That is literally that LAST thing Sanji needs, what are you talking about?

Not only that but put yourself in Oda’s place as well... you have been drawing this manga for 20+ years and building Sanji’s character for 900+ chapters. Would you really just give him away to one of them? If you are then you had no attachment to the character whatsoever to begin with.

Everyone deserves a second chance of course, and the chances of Sanji meeting up with both are high. But if you want any of them to be with Sanji... they need to show super impressive feats first.

Up until now Violet showed me nothing, and Pudding did not show me enough🤷🏻‍♂️.

Yeaaah its really dissappointing how little chuuya is explored in canon. Like i think it was even a fandom joke at some point (at least in my circles) how one of the fandom darlings is utterly left without development. Like creators really spoil dazai with scenes n things to do, youd think theyd match him up with his ex (partner) in some of those scenes cuz they have one of the most entertaining dynamics in the show and its always so fun when they are on screen together. Like Dazai got the whole Dark Era n chuuya wasnt even mentioned in it (this was thankfully fixed during fifteen, i dont think youll feel that as much cuz u came in after n could binge the whole thing but the absence of chuuya in dark era was really jarring n im super glad we got fifteen so we could have baby dazai n chuuya interactions. Oh also chuuyas barbie bike in dead apple i loved that so much). So yea absence if chuuya is really strange n really felt a lot when the other part of soukoku n shinsoukoku are all main characters. Like there were ways to include him in the story. Hes dazais ex partner, he could have mentored aku after dazai left, he has a whole ass god in him, DO SOMETHING WITH HIM. I just wish he had more screen time is all, like with my other favs i dont mind that they get little screen time cuz they are support characters but chuuya doesnt feel like he should be a support character so its :/

Also where u at with s3 i have thoughts on ranpo vs chuuya (of course i have)

Chuuya does deserve so much more screentime. He’s not only infamous as the second member of Soukoku, he has a god inside him, he was probably one of the people closest to Dazai beyond Oda and Ango (and he’s known him longer too), and while I don’t think Dazai leaving the Port Mafia should be treated as Chuuya angst (because Dazai had a very good reason for leaving the Mafia that had nothing to do with Chuuya), it’s still annoying that we didn’t get to see more about Chuuya’s feelings about it. With Dazai gone, he can no longer be the Mafia’s best weapon unless he wants to die, it would have impacted him some way!

Also, is no one going to mention how Chuuya became the person in charge during the cannibalism arc? Not Kouyou, not Hirotsu, not any member that has more experience. Chuuya! If Chuuya is that important that people trusted his lead, why the hell do we not see more of him T-T

What I’m saying is that Chuuya deserves more and we deserve to know more about Chuuya.

The Biggest Gamble in Manga History

So in the entire history of manga and anime there is just one thing that I still find hard to believe happened, the separation of the Strawhat crew at Shabondy in One Piece. I remember when it happened, it was a shocking moment that no one saw coming, a complete loss for the crew where they were outclassed in every way and that truly felt like it could be the end of the series. We knew it wasn’t the end but the tone and finality of that defeat made it seem like a real possibility. And then when the various islands the Strawhats had been banished too were shown everyone assumed(correctly) that they would receive training there and that a time-skip would take place and the crew would be reunited later on. What no one saw coming was that the time-skip would be delayed for another 80 chapters, that nearly 2 years in real times would pass before the crew was ever reunited because Oda had decided to have Luffy try to rescue his brother on his own, with just a few new allies and former enemies to help him.

While it doesnt sound that extreme at first bear in mind that this separation period lasted 2 years in real time. Imagine your favorite show separating the main character out and running 2 seasons where they never interacted with the rest of the cast, that the rest of the cast wouldn’t even be seen except for 1 scene every few episodes. I can not think of a single series that has ever taken such a risk, and especially not one that is as popular as One Piece. It’s like if Rowling decided to have Harry suddenly change schools after teh 4th book, maybe to that one American school that was mentioned one time, left him on his own for books 5 and 6, and didn’t reunite him with anyone you knew from before until the 7th book. That’s essentially what Oda did with One Piece, three entire arcs, over 2 years of Luffy being separated from his crew. And it worked. Amazon Lily was a bit odd but Impel Down and Marineford were arcs that weren’t just amazing but served as a fantastic conclusion for the first half of One Piece while setting the stage for the future. A future where the Strawhats would now be far stronger, having realized just how far they had to go and being in plaves they could grow. But the balls it took to take that risk, especially since One Piece doesnt feel like it has just one main character most the time, typically switching viewpoints around and showcasing all the crew. Oda deserves alot of respect for many of the things he’s done with One Piece, creating a fantastic world, managing a massive plot that hearkens back to details you might’ve originally overlooked or considered inconsequential, actually including real issues like racism and slavery, but his willingness to take such a gamble still amazes me.
