Step by Step (Jonghyun x Reader) - Chapter 7

Story Type: College AU; 2nd person Characters: Jonghyun x Reader Genre: fluff, romance Summary: You’re in Law School and live in a big house with some of your classmates. The boys live downstairs and the girls on the second floor. You’re not too close with some of them, especially with the guys. But then, Easter is here and you can’t go home to visit your parents, neither Jonghyun can go. That’s when you two start to get closer.

Thursday, 10:30am. You only have one class in the afternoon so you were sleeping a little bit more than the usual but suddenly your phone started to ring non stop. You didn't see who was calling, just answered with a completely sleepy voice, looking like a zombie, trying to finish that soon as possible and come back to your dreams.

"Hm? Yes?"

"Wake up, sunshine."

"Who's it?"

"It's me!"

"Me who?" - You rubbed your eyes and looked to the phone screen, trying to come back to life and see the name there. - "Jonghyun... why are you calling me? Let me sleep."

"You're accepting calls without seeing who is it calling? Oh, that hurt my feelings."

"I was sleeping ok? And you wouldn't stop calling me, so... what do you want?"

"I want you to open the chat and see your messages. Quickly." - And just like that he hung up the phone.

"God…" - You sighed. - "What an educated man we have here."

He sent so many messages, you were shocked with that, maybe something have happened and you didn't know, so you sat on the bed to process the situation.

Jonghy said: Morning, sunshine Jonghy said: Wake up, let's go out for lunch ^^ Jonghy said: Wake up :((( Jonghy said: I'm hungry

You started to laugh reading his messages. It was 10am boy, calm down. Go eat something, it's not time for lunch yet.

Jonghy said: if you don't wanna go with me ok, fineee

What a desperate man. It must me his stomach talking (or not).

Jonghy said: come on :( I know a nice and new place we could check :( Jonghy said: Y/N wake uuup!! Jonghy said: I'm gonna call you *1 missed call from Jonghy*

You were typing to answer him and another message arrived.

Jonghy said: I know you've read it so come quickly, baby I'm waiting for you in the car

And then a picture pops up. It was him wearing all black, with his favorite red cap, inside the car waiting for you. Not even smiling, just with a soft look, calling for you. Your heart skipped a beat seeing that, he's confusing your head and heart. The anger you were feeling when he woke you up has faded away, just like magic. You had to tap your phone screen twice before it locked because you didn't even know what to answer or how to act after that.

"First of all, you're so desperate, dude chill!! lol second of it, where are we going? I hope it’s a 5 star place. I'm going to get ready now, it might take a few minutes so don't lose your patience and wait for me. Btw where are you? Aron's car, right? I'll let you know when I'm ready ;)" - You typed back.

You went to the bathroom and bumped into your friend Rosie in the corridor. She got surprised to see you awake at that time in the morning.

"What happened, Y/N? Is there a monster in your bed? Why are you up already?" - She asked.

"No..." - You laughed after a long sigh. - "Jonghyun just called me. He needs me to do something." - She would mock you if you have said the truth.

"Oh. That's why he was so dressed up. It says a lot." - You entered the bathroom, giving her a suspicious face, thinking about what she meant by that but you decided to let it go.

Soon you went back to your room, you saw a notification coming up in your phone again and yes, it was the most anxious boy in town.

Jonghy said: 5 star?? what do you think I am?? I'm not an heir. But once I get more money I'll take you to one, don't worry :) Jonghy said: you're taking too long... I'm getting bored Jonghy said: and tired

For a few seconds, you really thought about not going just because he was rushing you as if he was dying there. But he was being such a sweetheart to you with no reason and it was better to go see what was his deal.

"I'm goinggg!! Stoppp!!! I'm trying to get ready, don't rush me!! Just a little bit more and I'll be there. Don't die, for god's sake!" - You've sent that to him and JR just replied with a bunch of the pleading face emoji that you could visualize him doing that.

20 minutes have passed and you were leaving the house in a rush, all clumsy with your purse and keys, trying not to drop your phone while texting Jonghyun saying that you were ready to go. You stepped outside and almost got a heart attack. He was right by the door, leaning against the wall, looking at you with such an appealing look.

"Jesus Christ, Kim Jonghyun!" - You put your hands on your chest, scared, shaking a little bit.

"I'm sorry." - He bent down to pick up your keys, feeling regretful for his actions but also laughing at your reaction. - "I didn't mean to scary you."

"But you did! I thought you were in the car, I wasn't expecting you here." - With a saddening tone of voice, you explained yourself, making him feel bad for you.

"Sorry again!" - He made an adorable face. JR wanted to give you a hug but didn't know how to so he just patted your back as if you were just a kid.

"Yeah, ok. But hey, let's go. You were in such a hurry to go eat, what are we waiting for?"

"Yep!" - Both of you were heading to the car. - "You look stunning, by the way!" - He stepped back for a second, feeling flustered for what he has said.

You were wearing a white shirt with a denim jacket and light beige dress pants, you hadn't given much thought to the look itself, just went with your basic stuff. A compliment wasn't something you would expect to receive.

"Thank you!" - You smiled back to him as he hurried to try to be a gentleman and open the door for you. - "So do you!" - You didn't just say that out of politeness.

He smiled back to you, finally getting into the car, driving you both to the restaurant.

ateez i'm not gonna lie, they have some great tracks, but im deadass scared to get into them. they are intimidating as fUCK

nu'est i was a fairly big fan of them a while back, and it was mainly because of minhyun i watched produce 101 season 2 :)

pentagon their songs give me such summer-vibes, so whenever i need me a good pick me up, i blast their music and pretend its mid-july lmao

24k i listen to only a handful of their songs, but the few songs i listen to, i listen to like all the time hehehe

wanna one i was SUCH a big fan when they were promoting, and it absolutely shattered my heart when they 'disbanded', but its like they say, all good things come to an end :(

day6 they give me a sense of home when i listen to them, but i haven't been supporting them a lot as of recent

infinite there was a solid two month period in like 2016 where i would pretty much give my life for these men, but one day i just forgot they existed, so if i put my music on shuffle and their songs come on, i look like thats so raven, just zooming to a different point in time- its weird

ikon i never really informed myself on what happened with them and b.i. which is 100% my own fault, but ever since the incident i haven't listened to them. idk, it wasn't really on purpouse.

b.a.p i only listen to them during VERY special occasions. when me and my hometown friend are out driving at night during the summer, we always blast their music, it's become tradition by now

Happy Valentine’s day L.O.V.Es! I have something for you uwu

NU’EST planning their Valentine’s Day for their partner.

JR simply surprised you with your favorite candy and some cute roses. He didn’t see a big reason to do anything else, as he knew you knew he loved you. But still in the end of the day, spending time with him was the best gift.

Aron

Aron didn’t think you’d want anything too fancy for Valentine’s Day. So he cooked your favorite meal and made a table for two in his place. Noah and KKotsooni would also join your romantic dinner.

“Happy Valentines Day!” *Noah and KKotsooni join* “And happy Valentine’s day to you too...” *Aron looks at you* “I hope you don’t mind them joining too.”

Baekho

Baekho but all in. He bought flowers, a teddy holding a heart that said “I love you” and he also made a five star course meal for the two of you. All for you. He loves you so much and wants you to know it. And maybe he also has something else planned for you ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

“Happy Valentine’s Day babe! These flowers are for you! ... Yes I made this meal, and desert, just for you... yes I got you this teddy, but isn’t he cute? And I also have something else for you if you want... .”

Minhyun

This awkward bean had planned the Valentine’s Day for weeks. He wanted it to be perfect for you. So he asked for help from Aron for the cooking and Baekho for other gifts. In the end of the day, he had a whole meal ready for you (mostly done by Aron) and few cute gifts like flowers and a teddy holding a heart.

“Happy Valentine’s Day, my love! Uhh... Yes, I made all of this myself... and chose this teddy for you as well.. I love you!”

Ren

Ren went all for Valentine’s Day, but in his own way. He first sung a beautiful love song for you and then dramatically gave you his hand and guided you to your favorite ramen restaurant. He told you to order whatever you wanted. He payed for the two of you. You spend the whole day with him.

“Eat well! I have put a lot of thought into this day! I love you.”

ARON

The night outside. You’re watching the dark sky through a window of his car. Aron’s hand rests next to your thigh, palm leaning against the knob of gear shift. He hums along with the radio, eyes gazing at you every now and then. You only act oblivious. There’s a wandering thought that perhaps he wants to say something and though you wait, he never does, just stares. As if enchanted, but by what exactly, you cannot figure out.

A bite on your cheek. It takes you by surprise, freezing in place, because who would even think to do so? Surely not Aaron? And yet, he’s the one visible in your peripheral vision. Absurd. He’s not the one to do things as drastic, even in the privacy of his own four walls. The pain doesn’t strike you, but the tickling in your throat, an effect of holding back laughter, does turn more unbearable with each passing second. Until you can’t keep it locked any longer, and the force pulls you out of Aaron’s already weak hold.

Running a few meters to catch up to him. Aaron didn’t stop along with you, but you quickly realize it wasn’t on purpose. As your hand grabs his elbow, he turns to watch you with innocent curiosity. He doesn’t mention the moment. And though you want to scold him - leaving your s/o behind is a no joking matter - the expression on his face makes you drop the topic. Aaron continues chattering about his day, so you listen, holding onto his arm just in case he doesn’t notice your departure next time.

Awkward glances. Aaron knows it’s not right, or at least how it should be, but he’s too confused to put thoughts into words. You, on the other hand, know he wants the best, which should be enough. The key word being should. When you’re brave enough, you return one of the stares. His first instinct is to retract, but just a look away has him thinking that perhaps it’s not the best course of action. Without a second glance, he reaches forward, to open the space by his side, just in case you decide you need it.

The lack of him in general. Neither your phone, nor your senses are graced by his presence. It’s as if he has never existed, and you’re close to believing that yes, indeed, he’s just a product of your vivid imagination. That he’s someone you’ve once dreamed about, or just a silhouette from family pictures, whose face is known, but ghostly. Days pass with you suffering from a heartache and that’s all he is - a ghost.

Irritating pain in your eyes. The hour is late. The day’s effect is catching up to you. It’s too difficult to keep your eyes open. Jonghyun says something, but your clouded mind doesn’t catch a word. When you ask him to repeat, he just releases a good-natured laugh, as if your tragic state was a laughing matter. It’s his fault, after all. He’s the person responsible for keeping you awake past midnight. And even his adorable reaction to your sleepiness won’t correct his wrongdoings.

Holding his baseball cap, stunned that it’s the only thing of his you have that still smells of him. It’s weird to take comfort in something so... uncommon, but you’re too desperate at this point. The painful knowledge of him being away has you resorting to the strangest. Before the cap, you clung to his favorite yogurt. Before it, there was the shampoo he always uses. And though nothing has lasting effect, the moment of breathing in a familiar smell clears your head. Just a few seconds, but painless seconds.

Fingertips on your closed eyelids. Pressure on the lashes. Breath on your cheek. Coldness by your legs. Skin skimming against skin, only to disappear in a second. The hour must be late. A little concerned, you finally open your eyes. Jonghyun sighs in surprise. Like a deer caught in headlights, he’s frozen in his spot. Guilt strikes his features. He’s sure his carelessness woke you up. But who would be mad at the sweetest guy alive? If he can’t sleep, then so can’t you. That’s the verdict.

Small words of appreciation, you didn’t realize you needed. They always take you by surprise. One would think them an ambush, meant to bring Jonghyun a gift in the form of your embarrassed smile. But just a mention of his possible hidden intentions makes his face harden. How can you assume such vile things about his motives? All the compliments are genuine! Your embarrassment is just a bonus!

Being avoided. Though you lean forward to embrace him, Jonghyun turns away. His face is unreadable, empty. Your hands manage to lock around his waist in time, but they’re obviously unwelcome there. As if you were a virus, you’re rejected. Jonghyun stands stiff in your weak hold, wordless and emotionless. It hurts. It really hurts. You’re left with no other option, but to let him go. What he wants at the moment is not you. The only right course of action is to accept it.

BAEKHO

The plush of his lips on the back of your neck. It’s in a way restless - Dongho shows no sign of wanting to stop. His legs are settled around your hips, locking you in the embrace. There are things you should be doing instead of letting him lull you into sweet comfort, but he’s never once backed from an ambush. You may be trying to work, yet you do want him to take your mind off of the stress as well.

His silence. Mouth occupied by pancakes, Dongho doesn’t speak. Every then and now he just graces you with small noises of content. Their appearance is a spark of electricity, opening your mouth in a smile. Though your work doesn’t end at making him comfort food, the progress in lifting his spirits is still a success that should be celebrated. And so, you gift yourself with the continuation of staring at Dongho’s passionate eating habits. He’s too taken by the pancakes to notice it.

Fingernails scratching stitches on your jeans. He’s nervous, this much is obvious. The empty look on his face tells you that the thoughts have taken Dongho miles away, and none of your words will be registered by his mind. The scratching turns weaker for a moment as he glances at the clock. Its ticking seems to irritate him only more. Finally, you cover his hand with your own and Dongho smiles a little. You presence alone won’t save him, but it does give him a little bit of warmth and assurance, that at the end of the day, he’s not alone.

A little yelp of excitement, so inaccurate for a man built like Dongho. Though he’s more of a big bad wolf appearance-wise, his smiling face reminds you of a baby. He dances around the room, eyes bright and happy. None of the questioning looks you shoot his way are enough to grant you an answer. Dongho ignores your stares, until he finally grabs your hands to pull you along. For a long time he doesn’t explain what the hell is going on, but when he’s acting like that, you cannot just stop him. The questions have to wait.

How his fists tighten when he’s mad. Dongho doesn’t think about hiding them, he’s too taken by the all-consuming anger. It’s a normal thing to get frustrated, but somehow, seeing him mad is... different? You’re not used to the paling insides of his fingers, an effect of limited blood flow. You know he won’t do anything, it’s just his way of offloading, and yet, somewhere deep in your mind, you’re scared. Terrified, but of the possibility it will stay this way between you and him.

MINHYUN

Reaching for his hand when the moment feels vile. Minhyun, though not a fan of publicly displayed affection, doesn’t take his fingers away. They interlock with yours, grip quick to tighten in a comforting manner. The world instantly seems a little bit more bearable. As soon as you turn to look at him, Minhyun’s gaze meets yours. There’s a question whether you’re fine. Not wanting to have him worried any longer, you nod yes. With him, you’ll be fine.

The coldness of an ice pack. Your momentary lack of focus costed you pain and tears. Now Minhyun, taking the role of a house nurse, stands behind you, holding a bundle of ice cubes and using the moment to scold you. Because how dare you hurt yourself when he’s just a few steps away? How dare you not give him a chance to save you from the dangers of living? How dare you roll your eyes when he’s teaching you an important lesson of self-preservation? And don’t even think about whining at the coldness, it’s meant to freeze!

A laptop you have completely forgotten. Though Minhyun’s attention is all on you and he’s reaching lower your back, the sound of crashing electronics forces you apart. You take a look at his swollen lips before turning to search for the source of all commotion. Minhyun’s hands fall on your thighs, still not ready to let go completely. He doesn’t seem concerned about the noise. If anything, it’s the growing distance between the two of you that he’s wary of. When you sheepishly tell him that it’s his laptop that fell, he just grunts and then pulls you back.

Washing your hands when he encircles you from behind. Minhyun’s head rests on your shoulder, meanwhile his fingers cover yours under the stream of running water. He doesn’t speak. There’s no need, you know he expects you to wash his hands as well. It’s a little thing you have a habit of spoiling him with. As you silently comply, Minhyun laughs, chest trembling against your back. Though you can’t see, you can feel his gaze on your profile.

A heavy gaze. One that pushes you down, until you’re flat against the ground, trembling in fear, because you’re its object. Minhyun won’t say a word, but he watches, as if he was feeding on your terror. But how can someone be vicious enough to put a boot on your lungs and remain silent, indifferent to the tortures they’re putting you through? Of course, he’s awaiting a grand apology, but even tired, breathless from the anger olympics, you don’t want to relent. Not when he’s not free of his own wrongdoings.

REN

The stark shape of his nose, digging itself into your cheek. Minki is trying to get a reaction out of you, but while doing so, he only causes you a meltdown inside. Instead of a grimace, he’s rewarded with a sweet smile. Minki wants to push your buttons more, the soul of a troublemaker is chewing his ear off, and yet he gives up. It doesn’t go past your attention - his defeated, but genuine smile is a sight to behold.

Delicate skin you are allowed to touch. Minki’s facing away from you, either moaning or whining, depending on what nerve you’re currently crunching. Few times he tries to swat your hands away, but you’re not that easily scared by his threats. They can’t be serious. When he makes a sarcastic comment about your great massage techniques, you act dumb and dig where it hurts him. Minki scowls, but gives up, promising he won’t open his mouth again. A few minutes is how long he can go without uttering a word.

The moment he forgets himself in the feeling of being close. Minki’s hot breath is blowing at your lips, and though you anticipate a kiss, it’s never placed. It’s as if some greater being has stopped the time for him, imprisoning Minki in the pose. Having him so close is heavenly, but just as happy as you are, the need to laugh overpowers. His eyes open at the sound, surprised. Once again, he returns to the body of a born teaser.

A pair of gloves, thrown at you seemingly out of annoyance. At least that’s what’s written on Minki’s face. Annoyance, because you’re forgetful enough to hurt yourself in the cold season. Stiff fingers have trouble putting the material on. You hesitate. Is it really okay for you take the gloves? Minki gave you them himself, but sometimes we hurt ourselves for others. It’s a reminder that he cares a lot, no matter how much of trouble he’s brought you. Or how deep is the frown on his features.

The face of disinterest. You hate it with burning passion. It’s his way of telling you that things aren’t alright between the two of you. That he feels distaste, as if he was staring at a plate of mold. Minki’s words are cold, pulled straight out of freezing temperatures. They make your back stiffen, eyes glaze over, hands tighten their grip. You want to disappear, melt away and seep through the ground to mix with the depths. Maybe then you wouldn’t have to suffer at the hands of his indifferent facial expression.

Beautiful

A/N: Welcome to Spring Season Stories! This is the 10th of the daily stories in April, so be on the lookout for more! I would like to clarify that everything written in this story is complete fiction and isn’t to be taken as a true portrayal of reality. Summary: An interesting encounter during a night shift.

Your nose was buried in a book when you heard the bell ring that indicated someone had come into the store. Barely looking up at the customer, you greeted the guy that had come in with a small smile before your eyes flickered back to the book. Normally, this would be considered bad behavior, something to avoid. However, it was already late into the night, or early morning, whichever two a.m. fits under properly. Besides, the owner is a bit lax with employees working the night shifts because it can get quite boring since the flow of customers is limited during this time frame.

“Is the book interesting?” A teasing voice asks from in front of you, causing you to be startled into looking up. “Oh, sorry, I’m Baekho. I didn’t mean to scare you.”

If you were expecting the person who had mentioned the book, that you were deeply invested in, by the way, to look annoyed, well, you would have been wrong. There was no trace of annoyance on his face, just a hint of amusement sparkling in his dark eyes. You felt your heart catapult into your throat. “Oh, hi, it’s okay. Yes, it is.” For a moment all thoughts left your head. You’re meant to be breathing, right? How does one breathe again exactly? He hadn’t said more than four words to you and yet here you were, heart fluttering about like someone confronted by their school crush.

“What’s it about?” Baekho questions, leaning slightly against the counter.

His movement drew your eyes to the counter, which reminded you of your job. An array of snacks were set in front of you, waiting to be rung up. “Um,” you mumbled, trading the book for the scanner. “It’s just a simple book of poetry, the author is a favorite of mine.”

“Ah, are you a big fan of poetry?”

“Very much so,” you breathed with a dreamy look, feeling your cheeks heat a bit at the intense reaction.

The smile he gave at your answer once again left you breathless. “What do you like about it?”

“The words. The specific way of expression each poet has, the distinctness of someone finding and using their own voice.”

The faint beep of the scanner was the only interruption of your soft voice carrying into the empty store. There was a beat of silence as you finished the transaction, the kind that extended longer than either party meant for it to, but felt comfortable nonetheless. A brief moment of disappointment filtered over you as he paid and the realization hit that he was going to leave. But of course, he was going to leave. What, was he supposed to just hang around to talk? At two a.m.? If you were a different person you might have asked for his name, but that just wasn’t something you had in you. Not yet at least.

Before Baekho was fully out of the door, he turned to you once more. “You look beautiful when you talk about poetry. There’s this light in your eyes like you’ve come alive.”

You choked in a deep breath as he left without giving you a chance to respond. Suddenly it felt far too warm in this little store, much too stuffy. Why weren’t there any windows to open? No one had ever given you such a compliment before. Maybe no one was paying enough attention to what you were passionate about, or if they did, they chose not to say anything. Oddly, you found yourself looking forward to your next shift. It could be too optimistic, but you hoped that he would come in again. And you couldn’t wait.

Step by Step (Jonghyun x Reader) - Chapter 2

Chapter 1: (x)

CHAPTER 2

You’re trying to sleep, thanking all the gods that Jonghyun has two beds because you wouldn’t be fine without him, not at all. You’re starting to feel safe around him, thinking that the fact he was right by your side makes you feel protected and that if the thieves come back, you’ll be fine.

But as said, you were trying to sleep. Trying. His room was too cold for you, for every normal person, to be honest. It was april but it was still so cold. The more the night fell, the colder it got. Jonghyun was only with a summer blanket, with feet and arms out. While you were grinding your teeth with your warm winter blanket.

He listened you moving in the bed non-stop and decided to take action.

“Can’t sleep?”

“How the fuck do you sleep in here, my friend?” - Oh you were mad. - “It’s cold as fuck and you barely covered. Where’s the heater?”

“It’s on the top of the wardrobe but it’s not working tho.”

“What? And you’re just fine with that?”

“Yeah, I don’t need any heater” - He smiled a little bit. You didn’t see it in full hd since it was too dark, but you knew he was smiling. - “And if I turn it on, I won’t be able to sleep because I’ll be too hot.”

“You must be joking.” - He wasn’t.

“Why would I be?” - He laughed as if the thing you said had offended him. - “I’m being pretty serious right now. I have it because my mom bought me but I gave it to Mingi and now it’s ruined.”

“Well, we need a solution here, JR!” - You were trying to think of something, trying to not move much, but the only thing that came to your mind was coming back to Minhyun’s room and that wasn’t a good idea at the moment. - “Do you have more blankets?”

“Nah” - He lied.

You were thinking about getting all the blankets in the house that you could and suddenly he jumped in your bed.

“The solution is here!” - He said and went under the cover.

“YAA!” - You yelled at him, trying to understand what he was doing. - “For fuck’s sake, man. What are you doing?” - and you immediately moved your body away from him.

“Heat transmission by thermal conduction. Physics, have you heard of it?”- The irony on his voice was huge.

“I'm seriously in such a disbelief right now. You’re really saying this to me. Wow.” - You couldn’t react to his nonsense. You were just facing him trying to crack his code.

“Yeah, I am. This is real, Y/N. Come on!! It’s gonna work. I won’t do anything else. It’s just me making your temperature rise.” - He opened his arms for you, smiling at little bit with the right side of his mouth and then started to sing Cage the Elephant in a low tone. - “Come a little closer, then you’ll see. Come on, come on, come on! Things aren't always what they seem to be.”

You still couldn’t believe him but you gave in. It was almost 4am and you were feeling so tired, so sleepy. What could go wrong? Yeah, everything. We know it. The existence of Kim Jonghyun went basically unnoticed by you until a few days ago. but you feel closer to him now, you started to trust him.

“Fine.” - You rolled your eyes and your voice showed how mad you were still feeling. - “But be careful! If this goes badly, be ready because I’m going to kill you!”

“You’re saying that you don’t trust me?”

“I have many reasons for that, boy.”

“Okay then, I get it. But I’m warm, I can give you all that. Trust me, baby.”

“Stop being so clingy please, JR. I just wanna sleep.” - You gave him such a disgusting face and then started to move towards his body, you just wanted this to end asap.

Your head was below his neck but you could imagine that he was with a victory smile on his face. And after a couple of minutes, you started to feel warmer so his victory was real and you had to give him that.

If it weren't for the pain, Ren would be laughing at how crazy Junhong was going. It had been cute at first, his master running around trying to get things together. “Almost time.” He muttered and groaned, letting his close as the pain spiked slightly as another contraction hit him. He took deep and slow breathes, a small smile leaving him as he heard Junhong do the same, going through the breathing exercises with him.

Reaching out, he took Junhong’s hand and held it tightly, bringing it up and kissed it lightly. “I love you master.” He whispered.

Junhong paced the floors back and forth. The doctors had ordered him out halfway through the delivery and he was scared. He didn't know what was going on. All he knew is that Ren didn't want him to go. The other had such a death grip on his hand, yet had been forced to let go of him.

He had hoped things were going alright. He hoped nothing was wrong. And if it was, though it was selfish and horrible of him to even suggest it, he would rather the doctors let the baby die or whatever and save his kitten. As time wore on, a sick feeling washed over home and Junhong thought he might just hurl right there, but he held it back. He took a few breaths and composed himself. He had to stay strong, regardless of what he was feeling. He needed to be strong for Ren.

It felt like an eternity, but it was only 30 minutes before a nurse came out and called him back. He braced himself to hear a crying Ren. Or a crying baby but his kitten not there.
