baby bestie because i read chp 14 so late im feeling like its my birthday, that i get chp 15 so early!! can i just quickly take the moment to scream about the dream scene??? all those little tells that maybe this isnt right (inception vibes). this was so brilliant
also obi's downward spiral about if anakin loves him or married himbeacuse he is an alpha IM CRYING WITH HIM OH GOD WHAT IF OBI NEVER CLAIMED HE WAS AN ALPHA AND STILL RULED OBIKIN WOULD NEVER HAVE MET PLS
Obi-Wan has had a hard time keeping his head on straight, this last week. A harder time than usual, anyway.
A side effect of all the stress, perhaps. babygirl change your suppresants pls theyre stressing you out i still dont trust komari she is maham anga's character for a reason
Anakin's hand has settled on his thigh; it grips him tight, bold and claiming, under the table.
Obi-Wan wonders if it will leave bruises.
The fingers creep closer— not further up but further in, ghosting the edge of the scent gland there— and Obi-Wan has to swallow back his arousal, trying to focus on Luminara. oh he's so jealous thisis such a good thing to read in fics but somehow such a red flag irl uk ill read any fic if it says possesive anakin
He feels like he’s back in his wedding finery, wondering why his fiancé won’t look at him.
His husband won’t look at him. i cried then for obi-wan and im crying for now poor baby had all his childhood dreams broken like sugar glass and now he knows anakin may never have married him????? i love it when u put obi-wan thru the horrors
im just gonna very casually read thru the rst of the fic again cause i simply love the writing style in this and i have creative writing hostel championship coming up so. uk. i would really like to write as well as you
(Referring to ch 15 of Their fragrance came from you)
Baby!! I had so much fun with the dream scenes honestly!! I felt so evil writing it but it was so so satisfying (summary of this whole chapter honestly). My aim with those slightly wrong things was that you wouldn't quite be able to tell if it was just Obi-Wan's unreliable narration at work (especially because he often has moments where he's caught up in something and "doesn't quite remember"/"didn't realize" something happened), or if there was actually something wrong! I also thought about having the whole dream sequence in italics, but I wanted the reader to take Obi-Wan's introspection about not being an alpha seriously.
And the repetition of things which happened in the dream, but slightly different… idk what drove me to do that, but I'm soooo happy I did. I think it adds so much flavor in showing how Obi-Wan perceives the world (or how he fears it to be) vs. how it actually is!
Ahhh the concept of Obi-Wan openly being the first omega ruler from the beginning! He would have come out sooo much less depressed 🥺🥺 (But maybe, in some ways, more stern? He has to show that he's not soft just because he's an omega, after all!) I love to think that in an AU like this, Stewjon and Tatooine still needed that mutual help so they went to make an alliance. But since there's no immediate candidate that's obvious for marriage, Tatooine doesn't write anything about marriage in their terms, hoping it will pass under the radar (it does). They settle instead on a sort of cultural exchange where Anakin will come spend some time in Jedha and then later Obi-Wan will go and visit Mos Espa. And hey, two omegas in positions of power… working closely together…. Obi-Wan gets to be Anakin's friend without jumping through all the hoops. Anakin gets to learn all about Obi-Wan's secret dreams of marriage. And then Obi-Wan's heat rolls around, and Anakin offers to help, and-- Well, the rest is history!
"babygirl change your suppresants pls theyre stressing you out i still dont trust komari she is maham anga's character for a reason" ALFKJSDLKFJSKJ THE WAY I CACKLED. She IS maham anga's character for a reason, but not this reason!!
The grade of suppressants Obi-Wan is taking are only meant to be used in the short term (a few years, with medically scheduled heats once or twice a year) in cases where it's not safe for an omega to be having heats. Otherwise, he should be taking regular-strength suppressants (with that same caveat of medically scheduled heats once or twice a year, along with a full detox every five or so years).
But uh. He's been taking them for twenty years. One medical heat a year, to mimic an alpha's biorhythm. No detoxes. It's a wonder his suppressants hadn't failed up until this point already. On top of all that is the new stimulation that he's getting from Anakin, which has his body trying to react like an omega (like Anakin's mate!!) and so it's also actively fighting through the suppressants rn. They're definitely failing, but they're failing slowly enough that he hasn't noticed. ((Also the idea that they'd fail is so inconceivable to him…. he's definitely not a doctor, lol))
I get you on the jealousy honestly I would HATE if someone did that irl but I'm such a fucking sucker for it in fiction. Anakin will cool down about it once he feels more secure, but I feel like it's necessary for his character to go through that development rather than being chill about Luminara from the get-go.
"poor baby had all his childhood dreams broken like sugar glass" LITERALLY 😭😭 I wrote a post a while back about how Obi-Wan didn't want to tell Anakin about his designation yet because he was too afraid of losing him. But now (he thinks) he's lost Anakin already!!
Luckily, Anakin will convince him that he wants to stay. So yes I'm putting Obi-Wan through the horrors, but. Ultimately it's so that he can heal and move on
And I'm so happy you like my writing style, I think it's really grown into itself (and grown on me, too) over the course of the fic! Good luck on your writing competition -- I'm sure you'll do well 💖💖

i had a post in the works talking about some of my personal life shit and the things i'm looking to do with rekindled this year to help make personal life shit easier aaand then i fell asleep for a nap and when i woke up Rachel announced that LO was ending in less than 10 episodes ??
Tumblr media
sooo yeah i'm officially saving that post for later, because LO is officially ending, with an actual end date. It does mean that it's not ending at the start of Spring like my initial prediction, which is a bummer (because that would have been really cool LMAOOO) but it does mean it gets to go on long enough to resolve the current plot arc. As for every other plotline in the story... yeah, those aren't getting wrapped up, at least not in any way that could be satisfying.
For over the last year LO has been a series of "wait seriously???" and this is yet another, though it's kind of different this time. We knew the end was coming and practically begging for Rachel to pick an end date because for many, following along with this comic has become a Sisyphean task week after week. It's bittersweet in a way, but . . . I also kinda don't feel anything? Maybe it's just my 'tism, maybe it's just the fact that I'm so tired of following this series, but I just... don't feel joy, but I don't feel dread. It's ending and that's that. As all things come and go in life, some day there won't be any more LO, and that day is May 11th.
I will miss the weekly readalongs that I would do with pals, the memes we'd make out of the new material, but I don't think I'm going to miss the comic and everything it said and did. At this point reading LO feels like watching a horse struggle to breathe and you're just begging the farmer to put it out of its misery, but the farmer thinks "No no, it'll be fine! It'll get back up in no time!" and it's like... no, it desperately needs to be put to rest 💀
I still have my two drafts stowed away, both on opposing sides of the fence depending on how LO turns out-
Tumblr media
-and now we finally have an end date on when those essays will be written.
I don't know how I feel yet about it ending. These are complicated feelings to sort through regarding a comic that's basically been my life for the last few years, even before I turned into a critic of it. I'm just glad there's a light at the end of the tunnel. And I'm glad even my "love to hate it" energy has been waning on it the past few weeks anyways so that the end of it all can feel as painless as possible LOL Don't get me wrong, there will still be plenty to discuss after the comic, I don't think the antiLO/ULO community will just disappear into a puff of smoke as soon as LO is over, but I think a lot of us are also equally relieved that the comic made it this easy to stop reading and that it now has an end point.
And most of all, I'm hoping that whatever ending the comic brings, even if it just winds up being the S2 finale all over again for the critics, is still satisfying for the fans who have stuck around with it this long. The people who have loved this comic through it all at least deserve a proper send-off and I really hope Rachel gives it to them.
As for me... I'm not going anywhere, but it's been nice to stuff the overflowing clothes of LO back into its drawer within my brain. I want to make room for other drawers, other things, other pieces of work that will undoubtedly bring me more joy and entertainment. I don't know what yet, but it's nice to know the drawers aren't overflowing anymore.
And that's all I'm gonna say on that.

What Would You Do, Baby, If You Only Knew? (That I Can See You) | Felicitas Rauch
Tumblr media
warnings: not proof read 😅
word count: 5618
summary: you don’t think feli can see you but she can…what would you do if you only knew?
a/n: requested and based off taylor swift’s i can see you 🥰
Tumblr media
You’re used to hiding behind the lens of a camera.
It started as a hobby when you were growing up, a way for you to capture moments you didn’t want to forget. It allowed you to be involved in whatever was going on while still staying true to your quiet and shy personality.
Years later and that hasn’t changed even though you have managed to turn your hobby into a full time career.
Working as a professional sports photographer, you have the once in a lifetime opportunity to meet elite athletes and watch them be at the top of the game, all the while living your childhood dream.
You love it and now that you are working for VfL Wolfsburg, you’re enjoying your life even more. Germany is a fascinating country and you are privileged to be able to photograph as many parts of it as you’re able to on your off days.
The staff members of the German football club, your fellow colleagues are lovely and the players you are tasked to photograph are even more so.
They’re a funny, charismatic lot that have absolutely no hesitation in trying to draw you into their chaos.
While you do appreciate their efforts, you are happier watching them enjoy themselves than when you’re actually participating.
Though in the aftermath of a huge win against Bayern, their joy is infectious and it’s the reason why you have a soft grin on your face as you look through the viewfinder of your camera.
As you snap away, trying to catch as many smiling faces in the ongoing locker room party as you can, you revel in the satisfying clicks of your camera shutter.
A few of the players are going out of their way to pose for you, their antics making you laugh as you continue to capture their raw happiness.
Though there is one particular face that you can’t help searching for.
You know that you’re not supposed to be biased, that you are meant to be taking photos of all the players equally but you just can’t seem to help how your camera unconsciously finds one Felicitas Rauch.
It has always been that way with you, from the very first moment you arrived at a training session.
You were introduced to the team and then left alone to start your new job and take photos of them training.
Feli’s big smile, one that seems almost too big for her face at times had quickly become your favourite sight.
Through the nature of your skillset, you’ve seen a lot of pretty things but you’re certain that the word pretty doesn’t do the German fullback justice.
She’s absolutely beautiful. The kind of beautiful that steals the very air out of your lungs.
You know fullbacks are rarely recognised and appreciated for the work they do but you can see Felicitas. You are convinced that she deserves more attention and you hope your photos of her help put her in a bigger spotlight.
You can see her now, as she celebrates with Svenja, pulling the older woman into a tight hug.
Diligently, you snap away with your camera, capturing the heartfelt moment. You know that both players are close and as you glance briefly at the resulting photos on your camera’s small digital screen, you know that they will appreciate you saving the memory for them.
As you discreetly leave the locker room, along with a few other staff members who want to give the players’ their own little bubble, to celebrate as a team, you resolve to look through your photos at a later time and send them to the respective players to keep or to post on their social medias if they felt like it.
It is that thought of your work that distracts you from catching the smile on Feli’s face dim.
She wants you to stay and wonders what she has to do for you to do so.
You’re the team’s photographer and to her, staff members are just as much part of the team as the players are. In her mind, there is only one team and that means that you are entitled to celebrating the win, like any player is. You don’t have to leave early.
Felicitas wants to get to know you better, your tendency to hide behind your camera intriguing her.
She’s attracted to you because of her curiosity but also because she thinks you are too gorgeous to be constantly ducking away from attention.
It’s too bad that you’ve put away any thought of anyone, let alone someone like Feli Rauch being interested in you.
You indulge in daydreams sometimes but you’re confident in the fact that they would only ever remain as figments of your imagination because you have long since assumed that you would spend your life alone.
It is just in your nature.
From a young age, you developed the belief that you are too introverted and too much like a wallflower to be noticed.
You’ve made your peace with it and are content with the life you lead.
If only you knew that Felicitas is planning to turn all that upside down. She can see you and she’s planning on making you well aware of it.
******
It starts when you send her the photos you’ve taken.
In your hotel room, you send each player every photo they are in after reviewing your camera roll and editing some of its contents.
All the players respond with their thanks and this isn’t new. It gives you a warm feeling inside, knowing that they are grateful for your hard work.
You’re just beginning to turn in for the night when there is a knock on your hotel room door.
That is new and surprise is evident on your face when you open it to see Feli standing outside.
She’s clearly dressed for bed, in an old Germany hoodie and shorts. The pair of glasses she is wearing makes your thoughts go straight to how cute she looks.
There’s no camera for you to hide your blush behind and Feli smiles as she notices.
‘W-What are you doing here?’ You stammer, shuffling your feet in embarrassment.
‘I just wanted to say thank you in person.’ Felicitas shrugs easily.
‘Oh. Well you’re welcome.’
Your cheeks flush even redder and the German fullback’s smile widens.
She reaches out to tuck a few strands of hair behind your ear and you freeze at the feel of her fingertips on your skin.
It’s an unexpectedly affectionate gesture that results in your breath audibly catching.
Feli is paying close attention to you and she notes that down immediately.
As you make no move to back away, Felicitas savours how soft your hair feels against her fingers.
‘You look beautiful with your hair down and especially so when you’re blushing. Have a good night.’ She whispers and then she’s gone before you can blink.
You stare at the empty corridor for a moment, unconsciously bringing your hand up to brush against the side of your cheek, right where moments ago, Feli had touched you.
It was only for a few brief seconds and if not for the way your heart is racing, you would be sure you had imagined the whole thing.
As it is, you can hardly believe that it’s not a dream because Feli being even remotely interested in you seems far too good to be true.
******
Feli is intent on making you believe it.
She has been watching you for ages and spending her time trying not to feel it.
It’s nearly impossible for her though, especially when you brush past her in the hallway outside the locker room.
Your hair isn’t tied up like it usually is and it’s the knowledge that her words have clearly had an effect on you that makes her want to learn everything about you.
The tiny bit of physical contact that she had made with you the other night has made her crave more.
She knows exactly how much she sees you, how she’s always been intrigued by you but now she knows that it goes beyond that.
The German fullback wants you. She truly wants you to see yourself the way she sees you.
So what would you do if she went to touch you now?
******
Felicitas starts off small.
As the team is going through their cooling down exercises, Feli jogs up to you. She lightly nudges her arm against yours, startling you slightly and making you nearly drop your camera.
‘Sorry.’ The older woman mumbles sheepishly.
‘It’s okay.’
You readjust your camera and then look up at her.
‘Do you need something?’
‘Not exactly. Can I borrow your camera though? I promise I’ll be careful with it.’
You hesitate. Your camera is precious to you and if it was anyone else, you would have said no straight away.
But it’s Feli Rauch asking.
The particular piece of equipment that you are holding has been with you since your career started. It isn’t just expensive but also holds an enormous amount of meaning to you personally.
You have a number of cameras but this is the one you cherish the most.
‘I’ll stay right next to you the entire time. I just want to try being half as good as you and take photos of the team.’ Felicitas pleads.
You soften and gingerly hand your camera over, making sure that the fullback puts the camera strap on.
‘Danke.’ Feli excitedly says.
She turns towards you and takes a photo immediately.
‘Felicitas what are you doing?’
‘Taking photos of my team. Which includes you.’ She explains, continuing to snap away.
Blushing furiously, you drop your gaze down towards the ground.
‘Hey don’t do that. Your eyes are too pretty to be hidden like that.’
Feli uses her finger to gently tilt your chin upwards, allowing her gorgeous brown eyes to meet yours.
You are speechless and you don’t know if it’s because of her sincere compliment or because of the physical contact.
‘Smile for me.’ The older woman prompts and you do as she asks.
‘See? Like I told you before, you’re beautiful.’ Felicitas murmurs as she shows you the photos she’s just taken.
You shyly thank her and Feli laughs softly.
‘No problem. Want to give me some tips before I try taking photos of our other teammates?’
‘Yeah.’ You nod, always eager to talk about your passion.
You show Feli the basics and then she stands beside you as she takes her photos.
Her fellow players are more than happy to be her subjects and Felicitas has them in fits of giggles as she yells out her instructions.
You can’t help but join in, sharing their laughter.
******
When Feli finally returns your camera, it’s as she promised. In perfect working condition, without a single scratch on it.
She had taken the utmost care with it, correctly inferring how much the device means to you from your earlier hesitation.
‘Thank you. Really. I had a great time learning from you.’ Feli says, her eyes practically shining.
‘It’s no problem. I had fun too.’ You tell her.
‘I can see why you love photography so much. There’s just something special about looking through the lens and having the ability to capture the moment.’
Your eyes widen in surprise. Not many people get why you love photography so much let alone when they are only just beginning to know you.
‘I’m glad you understand.’ You breathe.
Now it’s the German fullback’s turn to blush, her cheeks being dusted a light pink.
You are in awe of the fact that you’ve made a woman so out of your league blush and that gives you a little burst of confidence.
Confidence that leads you to blurt out, ‘Do you want to look over the photos you’ve taken with me? I usually go over all the photos and do some editing before I send them out.’
Felicitas looks delighted.
‘Yeah. I would love that.’
******
That’s how you end up at Feli’s apartment.
You had planned on doing your work in your usual cafe but the Wolfsburg player insisted on inviting you over, saying that it’s the least she can do after you had so generously lent her your camera and given her an impromptu photography lesson.
No matter how many times you said that she didn’t owe you anything, Feli had refused to take no for an answer.
So you get to meet Cinnamon.
The older woman’s brown poodle is an absolute darling and you can’t resist taking a couple of photos of her.
Of course you seek Feli’s permission first and she more than happily gives you the go ahead, on the condition that you send her all the photos.
This you fulfill easily and Felicitas gushes over how cute you’ve made her dog look in them, like Cinny needs any help looking adorable.
She bends down to show Cinnamon the photos on her phone and your heart flutters at the sight.
Be professional, you chide yourself. You have absolutely no right to be thinking about how attractive Feli looks.
It’s a struggle but by the time the older woman straightens back up, you’ve succeeded a tiny bit.
Felicitas smiles, unaware of your internal struggle as she directs you over to her couch.
‘This okay?’ She checks and you nod.
You let her sit down first and cautiously ensure that there is a sufficient amount of space between the both of you before you settle down.
It’s enough of a distance to make you feel safer.
Rather self consciously, you begin the motions of a well practiced routine, taking the memory card out of your camera and inserting it into your laptop.
‘Wow that’s a lot.’ Felicitas breathes as she takes in just how many photos there are.
You chuckle and look closer, scrolling down till you find Feli’s collection of photos.
Clicking past the few she had taken of you, you turn your laptop screen towards her so that she can see her work.
They’re actually quite good.
You fix a few details, cropping some and editing the lighting in others, all the while explaining to Feli what you are doing and why you’re doing it.
Feli watches you in silence, paying rapt attention to everything you are doing.
It’s very clear that you know what you’re talking about and she is quickly becoming obsessed with the very sound of your voice.
She must be staring too obviously because you catch her.
‘Felicitas? Are you okay?’ You nervously ask.
The German player shifts closer to you and her close proximity has your heart rate increasing.
‘Felicitas.’ You breathe and something in her brown eyes changes.
It makes you anxious but all that anxiety disappears when the fullback carefully reaches out to cup your face with one hand, her thumb brushing across your cheekbone.
‘Tell me to stop and I will.’ She softly says.
You open your mouth but no words come out. You’re completely and utterly captivated by her.
‘Tell me to stop and I will.’ Feli repeats, even more quietly as she cautiously closes the distance between the both of you.
Her intentions are clear and you can’t tell her to stop.
She fervently searches your face for any sign that you don’t want this. That you don’t want her as badly as she wants you.
The brunette doesn’t find anything because you do. You want her so incredibly much, more than you’ve ever wanted anything.
When you say nothing, Feli practically brightens with hope and gently presses her lips onto yours.
You gasp into her mouth and respond eagerly.
Feli smiles against you and picks up her pace.
Enthusiastically, she slides her free hand into your hair and she lightly pushes you down, so that your back meets her couch.
Your laptop is long forgotten and you barely register the thump that it makes as it slips off your lap and onto the carpeted floor.
The older woman takes advantage of the newly created space and swings her leg over your body, so that she’s straddling you.
You moan at the feel of her hips against yours.
The soft noise further encourages Felicitas who having drawn back slightly to breathe is kissing you again. This time without holding back.
Her fingers tug none too gently on your hair eliciting a groan from you as you slip your free hands up and under Feli’s shirt.
Your heart skips a beat when you feel the goosebumps that form under your touch. It spurs you on and you continue exploring her body, trying your best to memorise the way her muscles flex as you do so.
Feli moans your name when your fingertips smooth across her abs.
If she hadn’t drawn you in before that, she has now because you’ll do anything to hear it again.
******
When you leave Feli’s apartment, it’s with kiss swollen lips and tangled hair.
As Felicitas sees you out, she pulls you flush against her and brings her lips down to meet yours one more time.
‘For good measure.’ She winks before gently pushing you out and closing her door, leaving you a flustered mess.
******
You’re barely in your car when your phone chimes with a notification.
It’s Feli tagging you in an Instagram post, featuring the photos she’d taken of you earlier. Photos that you had sent her after your impromptu makeout session.
The post is captioned, ‘I can see you.’
It is followed by a winky face emoji that causes you to blush all over again.
******
You wait at the end of the hallway, outside the locker room for the older woman.
When she does emerge, she saunters over to you and wraps an arm around your shoulders, pulling you into her side.
‘Hello.’ She murmurs, kissing the top of your head just once.
‘Hi.’ You answer, with a breath of relief.
It still amazes you that Felicitas pays attention to you. That she sees you.
Then Felicitas does what she’s been thinking about since she saw you waiting down the hall.
She ducks into the first empty room she notices and tugs you in with her.
Your yelp of surprise is silenced by her lips on yours, the bruising kiss that she gifts you with making you weak in the knees.
It’s perfectly as she visualised, the shocked look on your face as she pins you up against the wall before you melt into her, completely and utterly willing to let her do as she pleases.
The way you look at her is nothing short of reverence and Felicitas knows that she will never take advantage of you. Not when she is beginning to look at you in the same manner.
******
Feli keeps everything professional and you try your best to do the same but something’s changed.
She can’t stop herself from showing her newfound affection towards you. She smiles at you all the time and you cannot help but capture all of those little moments through the lens of your camera.
In the back of her mind, from her spot on the training field, she is always thinking about you.
Constantly, she can feel your eyes on her and it makes her smile in your direction.
It is getting to the point where your camera roll is made up almost entirely of her. You’re simply unable to tear your eyes away from the phenomenon that is Feli Rauch.
******
It’s not just you that is keeping a watchful eye on Feli or just Felicitas that is keeping a watchful eye on you.
The rest of the team is too.
The older woman has picked up on this and she moves fast and quiet.
You won’t believe half of the things she sees inside her head, the things she’s hoping she’ll get to experience with you by her side.
She wants more than just stolen kisses, more than just your hands exploring her body in the dark. Felicitas desperately wants it all to be out in the light of day.
She wants to be able to kiss you whenever she can, just because she can. She wants to be able to do so in front of everyone, regardless of who they are.
The fullback simply wants to show the world how truly, madly and deeply her feelings run for you.
Felicitas hopes you stick around and wait to see these things happen.
She’s willing them to happen so badly.
There are a few things that she is wondering now though.
******
One, what would you do if she went to touch you now?
She is looking for a certain kind of physical touch now, not just the simple, casual touch of friends. Feli is searching for much more than that.
You’re not in her hotel room so she seeks you out. For this particular away game, the players are rooming on the floor above the staff.
When Feli makes it down to your floor and knocks on your door, she’s taken aback by how fast you open it.
‘Hey…’ You breathlessly greet her.
‘Hi. Are you going somewhere?’ Felicitas cautiously asks.
If you have plans, she doesn’t want to disrupt them despite the obvious disappointment that she is already beginning to feel at being unable to spend time with you.
It is a good thing then, that the only reason you were leaving your room was to find her.
You tell her that and the older woman can’t stop the big smile that is forming on her face.
That expression does not leave even as she rests her hands on your hips and pushes you lightly back into your room.
You offer no resistance and are in fact happily following her lead.
That’s question number one answered in the German woman’s mind.
******
Two, what would you do if they never found us out?
They in this case refer to her teammates and your boss.
While there aren’t any rules about players and staff fraternisation, you and Feli do not want to be the reason that there are.
Hence why the both of you are trying to keep your budding relationship on the down low.
It’s not really working, despite your’s and Felicitas’ best efforts because the two of you are far too smitten with each other.
The heart eyes, the lingering touches and most of all, the way you both just seem to gravitate towards each other.
So while no one explicitly says anything, the suggestive looks and teasing comments are all it takes to let you and Feli know that the two of you are not as subtle as you had both hoped to be.
The fullback watches you carefully for any sign that you mind when one of your teammates brings it up but she doesn’t find any.
This somewhat answers question number two for her because it wasn’t you who made the decision to draw the team’s attention to the both of you. It had simply happened, out of your control but nevertheless does not seem to be bothering you.
Felicitas can’t build up enough courage to ask you outright so this will have to be enough for now.
******
Three, what would you do if we never made a sound?
Felicitas’ grip on your hips is so tight that you’re sure she is going to leave bruises behind.
Not that you care because it is going to be a nice addition to the collection of marks she has already littered your body with.
You are trying your best to stay silent, knowing that the walls of this particular hotel are thin. There are players resting in the next room and you don’t want to disturb them but when Feli’s lips find a sensitive spot on your neck, you can’t help but cry out her name in pleasure.
The brunette pulls back immediately.
‘What happened to being quiet? You don’t want our friends to hear us do you?’
‘No…’ You shakily whisper.
‘Then try harder.’ Feli firmly instructs, although the teasing edge to her voice tells you that she isn’t angry at all.
It causes the tiny hope that you have been harbouring to blossom. Maybe Felicitas wouldn’t care if all this sneaking around comes to an end. Maybe she even wants the whole secret to unravel.
And when Feli is far too good at demonstrating precisely how well she has come to know your body…an impressive amount in the short time you have been playing this ‘What are we?’ game, the both of you are subjected to a relentless amount of good natured mocking at breakfast, the morning after.
In particular from Lynn and Sveindis who had been roomed next to you and Feli all night.
The Wolfsburg player knows the answer to question number three now because as the rest of the team pokes fun at the pair of you, you endure it all with a soft smile on your face.
Felicitas can’t help but slip her hand into yours under the table.
******
When Wolfburg qualifies for the Champions League final, you’re beyond ecstatic and so are the players.
You eagerly take photos of all their celebrations, till a certain brunette pulls you headfirst into them.
‘Feli! Feli I’m working!’ You protest but the older woman doesn’t listen.
She takes a moment to check that your camera is properly secured by its strap around your body before she easily picks you up and spins you around.
The small action makes your heart fill with even more emotion for her. You adore the fact that she cares enough about your love of photography to extend it to your equipment.
Your breathless laughter rings out across the field and your heart is light.
When Felicitas sets you down, her brown eyes are sparkling under the stadium lights and her hands are resting firmly on your waist.
You can see her in her bright green kit and messy bun, loose strands of hair falling into her face.
In that moment, you know that she couldn't care less about what anyone thinks. Not the club staff, her fellow players or even her fans.
She just wants to know what you think.
‘Are you happy?’ Feli whispers.
Her thumb strokes gently against your waist, over the material of your shirt as she speaks. She keeps her voice low, wanting you to know that her words meant just for you.
‘Incredibly so.’ You murmur, making sure that your voice is soft because you want her to know that your answer is meant only for her ears too.
‘Good.’ The fullback breathes and leans her forehead against yours lightly.
She inhales and exhales and you do the same, commiting the moment to memory.
You have your eyes closed so you depend on all your other senses. The cheers of the crowd, the warm feel of Feli’s hands, her steady breathing and how she smells.
Sweaty because she’s spent the last ninety minutes running around but also underneath all that, she smells like her lavender shampoo.
And you’re enamoured with it and her.
‘I know you’ve got to get back to work but will you wait for me after? Please?’
It’s a quiet, nearly timid request and one that you are more than happy to fulfill.
‘Of course.’ You nod your agreement and the German woman grins.
‘See you soon my shutterbug.’
She kisses your cheek quickly and then runs off towards the other Wolfsburg players before you have time to process the nickname or her public display of affection.
******
Your camera bag is slung around your shoulder and you anxiously fiddle with a crease in your shirt as you wait for Feli down the hall. It’s a familiar situation but you’re unusually nervous tonight.
In between a glance down at your shirt and and back at the locker room door, the brunette is right in front of you.
She doesn’t even bother saying hello, choosing to pin you up against the wall and kiss you senseless.
Her hands cradle your face and she pours all her emotion into her affectionate gestures.
Your legs give out and Felicitas presses your back harder into the solid surface behind you as she supports your weight.
‘Feli.’ You pant when she finally breaks the kiss to breathe.
‘Felicitas.’
It’s a single plaintive word that falls from your lips and the fullback tilts her head in a silent question.
‘We have an audience.’
Her mouth falls open in a ‘o’ shape and she turns around to see what is practically the entire team standing behind her with big cheesy grins.
‘Something you two want to share with the class?’ Svenja teases.
Feli simply rolls her eyes and despite the blush on her cheeks, kisses you soundly once more.
Lena’s and Sveindis’ cheers of, ‘Get your girl!’, fade into the background because all at once, Felicitas Rauch is not only at the forefront of your mind but is the only thing on your mind.
You won’t ever tell about how she kisses you because everyone can see the effect she has on you.
She’s your addiction.
******
The brunette fullback’s secret mission is not so secret.
Not to her family, her fellow players both club and national and her fans.
Especially when the first thing she does upon arriving back in Wolfsburg from national camp is to show up on your doorstep.
You end up going with Feli to pick up Cinny from her dogsitter and the older woman decides to be the photographer for a change.
The photo that she uploads onto her Instagram is one of you holding Cinnamon on your lap, in the passenger seat of her car.
It’s captioned, ‘My shutterbug and my poodle.’
Feli’s mission is to show you that you are seen and when the post blows up, it’s evident that you are
You are seen not only by Felicitas but by the world.
******
Leaning against the door frame of your apartment, you hear the tell tale sound of someone approaching.
You hope it’s who you have been waiting for and when a particular, one of a kind defender rounds the corner of the hallway, a smile lights up your face.
Feli’s heart just about bursts with all the affection she holds for you, when her eyes meet yours.
You’re wearing one of her sweatshirts that she must have left behind by accident.
On you, the article of clothing is too big and you have the sleeves bunched up to your elbows.
You self consciously pull at one side of it when Feli keeps staring at you, murmuring a soft, ‘What?’
‘You’re just so adorable.’ The brunette says, stepping into your space with a little smile.
Your cheeks turn pink and Felicitas gently places her hands on them.
‘I love it when you blush for me.’ She adds quietly, before she slants her lips down over yours.
Any embarrassment that you might be feeling about your reaction quickly vanishes.
Felicitas kissing you is all that matters and though she has been doing that a lot recently, you are never going to get tired of it. The butterflies that come alive in your stomach each and every time are never going to get tired of it.
As the brunette makes no effort to slow down, you correctly infer her intentions and pull her into your apartment.
Felicitas smirks when you lock the door, giving in to temptation and pushing you up against it.
‘This feels like a familiar situation.’ You breathlessly tease.
‘I don’t see you complaining.’ She cockily states.
You laugh, tugging on the collar of her jacket.
‘Off please.’
As hard as you try, your words betray just how desperate you are.
And Felicitas knows it.
That almost annoying smirk of hers is back on her face but the brunette obliges, throwing her jacket on the floor.
Your clothes and the rest of hers soon follow.
You didn’t even know it was possible but the way she is looking at you is making you want her even more.
******
Soft, feather-like kisses are what you are scattering all over Feli’s back.
You smile against her skin and now it’s the older woman’s turn to blush.
Idly, you move on to trace an aimless pattern onto her exposed shoulders.
Your fingers are gentle and everywhere your touch goes, Feli’s skin tingles.
‘Meine liebe.’ She breathes, completely and utterly taken by you.
‘What did you say?’ You ask, wondering if you had heard wrongly.
Your German isn’t all that good but there is no mistaking the tone of her confession.
With wide eyes, you keep looking at the woman who is lying with her head in your lap, your sheets pulled messily around her bare body.
Feli sits up, tenderly taking you into her arms.
‘Be mine.’
Her brown eyes are shining and her voice trembles slightly.
‘Felicitas, are you asking me to marry you?’
‘No! N-Not yet at least. Just be my girlfriend now and maybe in a few years I’ll be asking you to be my wife.’ She stammers.
Her hands reach out to cover yours and the reassuring weight of them, as well as the warmth they provide you are all the encouragement you need.
You lean in to kiss her ardently and Feli sighs, both in happiness and relief.
‘That’s a yes then? Please let that be a yes. I can see you. I promise I see all of you and I love each and every part.’ She asks, as soon as you two pull apart to catch your respective breaths.
The smile on your face is one you swear that only Feli can bring out in you.
‘Yes. It’s a yes because I love you too.’

A common question that has plagued fans for a long time now is how and why Wojira passed the element of water onto Nyad, considering they were enemies at the time. Personally, I think there are two different yet equally possible answers here:
Someone once pointed out that in Wu's scroll depicting the Battle of Nine Days, Wojira's eyes are red - which would likely only be the case if she was being controlled (her eyes return to blue once Kalmaar's control is lifted). It could be possible that Wojira was once a far more benevolent being before some unknown force took control of her, and during that time Nyad inherited power from her.
In Bentho's story about the legend of Nyad, she is depicted as being struck by the Amulets upon touching them - perhaps this was what caused her to acquire that power. Yes, technically it looks more like she touched the Storm Amulet, whereas water is more closely aligned with the Wave Amulet. However, I think it's worth noting that the Storm Elements don't seem to operate strictly under the standard conditions of most others. In this case there seems to be some kind of overlap. Although the elements passed on from Wojira are water and wind, she also has dominion over lightning as well, with "Storm" encompassing both of the latter two. Which suggests that may be a degree of overlap between the elements of storm. If so, then it's still entirely plausible that being struck by the Amulets could have given her the elemental power of water (and perhaps this overlap also explains why Jay was able to command wind that one time in s1?? I dunno. That's a theory post for another day)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is potentially corroborated by the fact that we don't see her wield the element of water until after this striking incident. Within the context of this particular animation sequence, her being struck and her becoming one with the sea are depicted within immediate proximity of each other.
If true, the second possibly would also resolve another big question involving Nyad and her element: that is, how the line of succession was able to progress even after she had become one with the sea. According to Nya, it was her power that kept her chained to the ocean, and by losing her power she severed her connection to it. By that logic, wouldn't the same be true for Nyad? If she's still connected to the sea, then logic should dictate that she should still be the master of water. But if her power left her and moved on to someone else, then she should have been restored just as Nya was in Crystalized.
But if we consider the idea that elemental power may be passed down through other means, it becomes possible that someone else may have acquired water the same way Nyad did, and that second person ended up passing the element down through the ages.
(But if that answer isn't satisfying, have another: according to the Overlord, elemental powers seem to possess some degree of semi-sentience, as they are able to "choose a new champion". Perhaps Nyad's elemental power left her to pick someone new, but at that point she'd been merged with the sea for so long that her spirit remained chained to it anyway.)

Also, if I may ask, how do you interpret the Creation Trio + Arceus as deities? In other words, do you think they're benevolent and merciful or wrathful and quick to anger? For instance, the story of the human and the sword in D/P/Pt indicates that while they will certainly intimidate, they seem hesitant to kill, even in retaliation. On the other hand, in PMD and the anime, they seem all too eager to eliminate humans because of perceived slights.
Now! This sure is a question, because I've basically created my set of headcanons for all of the Creation family throughout the years, since they're one of my the main objects of my brainrot DJHDGD
To me, they all act differently, and also situationally.
Dialga is the most cynical one. He is benevolent and enacts the role and purpose Arceus gave him fully, and he can show warmer emotions such as gratefulness when in the right situations (PMD2 being the biggest example), but, normally, in my opinion Dialga is neutral at best and has a certain disregard for mortals at worst, thinking of them as mere droplets of water in the vast river of time; thus, he often ignores them and their troubles, unless they do trouble him directly, unless reverence and worship is shown to him. He can also be very merciless.
Palkia is instead pretty emotional. He's the kindest and warmest of the three, and appreciates mortals as their own unique microcosms that should be respected as such, and he offers thankfulness to those who worship him. However he can also turn out to be very ruthless and instinctive in what he's doing, and he doesn't stand when his dominion is messed with by someone or something (PMD2), often harbouring to brute force. Despite his naturally kind nature, he can turn out to be as solemn as Dialga when the situation requires it.
Giratina despises mortals, be it Pokémon or humans. He sees them as the "perfect creations of his father" whom he wants to destroy as vengeance for what has been done to him: not only banished, but also forgotten by all. While probably the most brutal of the three, he is still very subtle most times, being deceptive and persuading to mortals as to use them as means for his own schemes (Volo). For short, in his eyes mortals are just a means to an end, so easily fooled and tricked.
Arceus, instead, is generally emotionally far from the mortal world, but they love their own creations and cares for them from the distance, as they watch over all (PMD2, Legends). They're not very prone to anger, but rather tends to resolve conflict with intricancies behind the scenes as to solve the universe's biggest problems. Regarding the mainline universe, they originally thought of Pokémon as the only creatures to inhabit this world, as humans were born as a "mistake of evolution"; but once the Ancient Hero of Hisuian mythos proved human dignity to them by challenging them in a friendly match, Arceus got that Pokémon and humans deserved equal respect, and even more did deserve the bond between them
I hope I haven't been too long with this DJDGDHDHDH, I know these are mostly headcanons and don't have much concrete proof in the games (be it DPPT, PLA or PMD), but I've grown to imagine them as their own characters, and with such personalities! I hope I answered your question in a satisfying way ♥️😭🙏

hi francesca!! i meant to tell u this forever ago omg but !! i finally finished devil venerable and i wanted to thank you for recommending it bc it was such a breath of fresh air <33
i love how it subverts fantasy tropes and how it includes metanarrative elements in a really clever way to accomplish that!! like the way it says things aren't as simple as they seem and how different viewpoints reflect different worlds and then actually DELIVERS is so satisfying y'know? and above all i really appreciated how logical and thought-out both the characters' reasoning and the plot's sequence were, everything felt tied together in terms of cause and effect and that's very rare to see in danmei imo
also the "villain" x right-hand man trope is SO delicious and so well-executed i'm actually amazed bc it could've gone off the rails real fast but the author really took the time to flesh it out and resolve it in a healthy and satisfying way that was tied to the character development of both the MC and ML. even despite the initial power imbalance they were able to stand on equal ground at the end. i even teared up several times bc of how evocative the writing was, especially during the backstories and the confession scene, it was SO GOOD 😭😭
oh and last but not least i LOVE how the female characters are portrayed!! they're smart and cunning in their own ways and it was just SO refreshing. also i found myself giggling several times bc of how fun their dynamic was lmao i just love them so much!! anyways lol i hope u don't mind me dumping all my thoughts on u but this was overall just such an enjoyable read so thank you again!! <33 brb gonna go through your entire devil venerable tag now hehe :3
gaby this is everything i could have hoped for and more, i am always so hesitant about recommending things but devil venerable was just so good (and coming from having read orv earlier in the year the metanarrative elements hit me so hard lmao) i couldn't let it go without saying something
i really can't add anything here, you've said it all. the characters, the plot, the dynamics, the natural evolution of not only the story itself but the relationships between so many of the characters. and it's so fun!! and still, still it knows when to take itself seriously.
there's such brilliant artistry at work in devil venerable, in the way it builds <3 <3
honestly, i am so glad you enjoyed it! unfortunately there's not much in the tag :( but hopefully it'll keep growing 🙏💞

Uhh a response to @ccbcrazy 's video on Conya except it got too long and I put too much effort into it to just make it a reblog. So uh. VERY LONG rambling about why my feelings on Conya are complicated that somehow managed to have way too much Jay in it. why does he keep sneaking in here goddamnit.
OKAY SO FIRST OF ALL YEAAAAAAAAAHHH!!!!! THE SILLIES EVER!!!! I love the way you organized the bullet points! Made everything very easy to follow (other than all the times the audio cut out RIP 💀) but. yeah . yeah them. they are sooooo. SO! UAUAUUA.
I agree with most of your points (and relate very very much w/ that bit about being ace and the Love At First Sight trope, though I'm aro and not ace), and ESPECIALLY with how Skybound handled everything (I could say so much about how much I hate despise the way they resolved Jaya in Skybound it's so icky I hate it I hate it I hate it I HATE IT), but I don't really have much to add to them, so I'll here are my random disjointed thoughts that sometimes and sometimes do not align with yours:
at some points, the emphasis on how it's something guilty and forbidden and how she "wants him but she can't have him", to quote that one Cole fangirl. It.. sat weirdly with me? As well as the phrasing of "the narrative wants him to be self-sacrificing", when talking about Cole on one of the slides. It feels weird to phrase it like that, as if the narrative is pushing him into that role rather than it being part of who he is, y'know? And the reason that the "yearning for what you know you can't have" aspect felt strange to me was that Cole putting friendship over his romantic relationships is a VERY significant thing about him for me. He values his friendships and family over any kind of romance, and would rather forfeit a potential romance than lose a friend, even if that friend hurt him. Which felt weird when the rest of the slideshow made it clear that you, like me, enjoy Conya because above all else, Cole loves Nya as a comrade and an equal. As a friend, before and even IF he loves her as anything else, which as you point out, isn't something we can definitively say about the other relationships (especially Jaya. I like it, I really do, and I'd say I think I like it more than Conya? but it's. it's VERY complicated and messy and they aren't really stable like. At All. for a while.)
And that part of Cole resonated with me a lot; the part that's perfectly fine not pursuing Nya because he doesn't NEED that connection like Jay does, because he's satisfied and content with where he is in their relationship now, after they both calm down and he realizes it isn't worth it, because it isn't even something he wants all THAT much. (The larger issue is that Jay was against him spending time with her at ALL, even as friends, because he was being possessive and insecure which is a whole host of other things-)
And actually? Y'know what? I'm gonna talk about Jay for a bit bc I feel like, though you did have a few slides on it and touch on it, you didn't really talk about how Jay is a very fundamental aspect of Conya's dynamic in-canon, as Nya's Yang and Cole's best friend (A title which he bestowes upon himself, I might add.) Jay is... Not Very Secure In His Relationships for the first few seasons. It stems from feeling inferior and weak compared to everyone else, which grows into clinginess and possessiveness for the ones that DO choose him, because he's afraid they'll leave, which in turn pushes them away because he's being Weird About It. He has this habit of... sorting those closest to him into neat little boxes that reassure him (Nya as his girlfriend who loves him and finds him funny and won't leave him and Cole as his best friend who's loyal and supportive and also won't ever leave him, and, as you'll note, he's the one that starts both of these, with asking Nya out and proclaiming Cole as his bestie during Skybound.) And when those people step out of those boxes, the change unsettles him, and he panics and doubles down on his tactics, sometimes even resorting to violence (which makes things worse and pushes them away more and... you get it. it's a whole cycle.) So.. Nya and Cole and their interactions are very defined by What Jay Will Let Them Do, for the first few seasons. What won't set him off, what is Good and Innocent and won't make him insecure. S1-7 Jay would NOT have let the hand nuzzle happen. But I believe S8-15 Jay WOULD. Because he's actually secure in his relationship with Nya and they trust each other, and he trusts Cole, etc. etc.
And I feel like them having an undercurrent of romantic tension kind of spits in the face of that?? I dunno. It makes the intention a little wobbly. I like the idea that it comes from a place of camaraderie, where platonic love can also be deep and intimate and layered, and not just repressed romantic feelings. Because the thought that either of them are just pining and never having that resolved makes me sad for all three of them :(.
But I DO like to think that Cole is a little bit madly in love with all of his friends in different ways (just like me fr..) and Nya's the one he latched onto back in S3 because she's a girl and heteronormativity. Cole has a lot of love in his heart ok and he cares about them very very much 🥹. And he loves and supports them and maybe he wants to kiss some or all of them but he can't do that so he's fine where he is. really he is. he's fine. HES FINE!!! he's okay when she puts a hand on his shoulder and he doesn't know how to express that he loves her so so so much and he missed her but not in the way that Jay loves her, in a different way, but he feels like it's just as important but Jay obviously didn't see it that way and he doesn't know if he does now, and how he loves them all different but so so strongly and how can she and Jay even make it so simple it's so EASY for them to wear the Yin/Yang relationship label it just FITS even though none of those relationships are alike how can the same label work when the love is obviously so different and he doesn't know if Nya even could understand that, understand how much his heart bursts with affection and fondness for her and the others, but she DOES she DOES get how you can love someone so much that there maybe aren't correct words for it, that's why Jay was the one to propose because she was just happy the way they were, and she's happy the way they are now and she's happy the way she and Cole are now except she can't be because they keep getting TORN APART and they can't ever really be happy because they're all always in danger ALL THE TIMe- sorry got carried away aha.
but yeah. And then Jay is there. and i can't let myself think Abt Conya too long because I get really sad about him. bc he's not LIKE THAT. He doesn't Get It like they (and I haha was it clear I am maybe projecting) do. The labels are comforting to him, rather than unneeded or even restricting in the way they could never encompass the full force of the feelings. They're like signifiers that the love is real, is there, is Official, which isn't something the others need because they already take the loving as a fact and a given, and Jay doesn't! He doubts his relationships and needs the reassurance of the labels, to be able to say, definitively, "This is my Yang, which means we love eachother romantically and complete eachother and are missing a piece without eachother and" (do you see where the problem is. The proposal scene was so cute but I think about his little rambly speech a little too much BUDDY WITH ANY OTHER PERSON ITD BE CUTE BUT WITH YOU AND YOUR TRACK RECORD ITS CONCERNING) But that also means that when the "rules" are broken he thinks it means the love is also broken because now the label has been dismantled and that's! NOT TRUE!!! AHH!!!!!!!! I truly think he would be cured if he made out with someone other than Nya (w/ her permission obv) for like ten seconds but he would literally never do that. but it would fix him I know this in my heart if Nya told him to go out and get some bitches he would be cured of All of His Complexes he would experience Enlightenment through the knowledge that he could do that and his relationship with Nya would still be valid and their feelings wouldn't change just because he did it and he would ALSO get to kiss someone about it. Literally win-win. Maybe it could even be Cole. this is how mudshock shippers stay winning.
And THATS always been my biggest issue with Conya. They never know what to do with Jay. Because if he found out Nya doesn't love him and is IN LOVE WITH HIS BEST FRIEND he would literally never recover all of his self worth issues that he overcame down the fucking drain bitch!! because everything bad he thought about himself has been proven true! AND THE REASON HE ACTS LIKE THAT IN THE FIRST FEW SEASONS IS BC THATS EXACTLY WHAT HES TERRIFIED OF HAPPENING!! And because he's so insecure and also has so much amatonormativity entrenched within him because the rules and restrictions reassure him, he's diametrically opposed to Conya! so I can't let myself have a Conya AU without Jay unpacking all of that and being Okay with people experiencing love differently, and then maybe realizing he doesn't have to love so restrictively anymore either, and THEN Conya can be whatever the fuck is going on with them in peace. Or he finds out Nya is in love with Cole and almost loses his shit before they both tell him they are also still in love with him. And he's like "oh thank God wait Cole ur in love with me" and that would fix him. Imagine thinking you're literally the worst and then you pull both Nya AND Cole while actively being kind of a jerk to them. how do you have the self worth issues after that shdbsjdb.
anyway go watch the video 👍

Mister Magic
I'm always searching for good horror audiobooks because, I suppose, people reading to me just never gets old, and I got to get my dose of The Horrors somehow. Most of the time I find something too self-indulgent or too mindless to be any good, but every once in a while I find something like Mister Magic.
Val can't remember her childhood, but she has always assumed something bad happened and that it in some way was her fault. She is about as content as she can be with her past being a painful mystery until her Friends find her again. Turns out, Val was part of the long-running TV series Mister Magic as a child until just before a tragedy saw the thing cancelled. Now, a cast reunion and retrospective may see the show rebooted, but Val can't shake the feeling that her past should perhaps stay buried.
Mister Magic is another in the "adults re-experience some Fucked Up Magical Shit from their childhood" genre of story, akin to King's It and Malfi's Black Mouth, although the lens of the progatonist having amnesia does provide an interesting twist on the whole thing as the narration doesn't have to pussyfoot around as to why she doesn't tell the audience what exactly went down back then. She is, after all, equally as curious, and equally as apprehensive to figure out as we the readers are.
Like the other books I mentioned above, Mister Magic also makes no bones about how it is about Trauma and specifically religious trauma. It doesn't take much knowledge about the more prolific cults of the contigious US to recognize the subtext, and occasional actual text, about mormonism as the source of the trauma.
This isn't to say it's all compulsory happiness, golden plates, and magic underwear, mind you. The book also has a robust horror mythology in itself, working with settings of eerie liminality, the fear of the unknown, the terror of malevolent cults and powerful forces beyond the ken of man. The reveal of what exactly is going on and why they are doing it happens piece by piece, but as things fall into place there is a delicious chill of neo-lovecraftian bleakness to it.
There's also one of the simplest but most powerful instances of body horror I have come across. Author Kiersten White has a real talent for making ideas stick from subtext and up, and in the scene in question she really lets the hooks sink in with some truly nauseating dream logic capped off with the vague but undeniably primal fear of something fucked up being out there and waiting to GET your ass.
Speaking of things that may have a vested interest RE:your ass, the titular character and ostensible protagonist of the TV show is also very interesting to me. His presence haunts the story, but he, or perhaps "it" is more apropriate, feels more like a ghost than an actual threat. Our heroes, per a childhood agreement, do not speak his name, and they all seem to have their own interpretation of exactly what "the man in the cape" as they've come to call him, was. Without getting into spoilers, I will say that the book handles resolving the built-up expectations of what sort of a being we're dealing with here in an untraditional way, but the end result is, I would argue, more satisfying than what either It or Black Mouth could muster.
I could go on honestly, especially the characters and how the author plays with our sympathies and assumptions, and try to unpack how this book has the protagonist change and learn throughout while seeming sympathetic throughout which is a thing curiously many authors seem to struggle with, and a bunch of other things, but I feel like I've said enough. Mister Magic. It's a good book. Read it, listen to it, whatever works for you.

Your post about how Lucie and Jesse aren't mature enough for their relationship reminded me of another weird thing with them, which is that Lucie met Jesse for the first time as a small child and has been holding onto this idealized vision of him as a faerie prince for years.
Now I can appreciate a ship where one person thinks the other is perfect but has to learn that they're human and ends up loving them all the more, but I don't think that Lucie ever really has that. I got the feeling that she loves Jesse because she loves the inherent romance and adventure of falling for a ghost and bringing him back to life through determination and love, that he's more of a character than a person to her. This might be because he isn't the best written character and the narrative never really acknowledges his flaws (like how he treated Grace), but it seems to me that Lucie was basically thrust into the middle of an epic romantic adventure that fit perfectly into her comfortable world of fantasy novels, and it just stayed that way. She is able to bring Jesse back with no real consequences (yeah Belial uses his body to kill Elias, but it all gets resolved without permanently hurting anyone the audience really cares about), and it's safer and better than when Jace is resurrected by the literal angel Raziel.
If ChoT leaned more into Lucie and Grace's friendship, I think we could have got a really interesting dynamic with Lucie building more empathy for Grace's trauma and learning about the problems with how Jesse treated her. Maybe Grace would inspire Lucie to confront Jesse, and it could help them both grow as people. I also like your idea about focusing on how the Lucie and Jesse situation impacted Malcolm and his quest to bring back Annabel. Actively addressing how much easier it was for her would do a lot to make me happier about the inconsistency, showing that the characters see how unfair it is and get angry about it. I'm fine with the fact that things aren't equally difficult for every character, I just wish there was more insight into how they react to the imbalance.
This ended up being more of a rant than a question, but Lucie frustrates me as a character because she could have been so interesting and she's just not.
So, preface. I'm very overall satisfied with ChoT and I give no fucks at all about Lucie, Jesse, or their relationship. I would not change anything if it would alter the endings of other characters (besides Grace in the ways I'll get to). But I don't think that my hopes would have impacted anyone outside of that trio, so, we good.
I think you hit the nail on the head with
I got the feeling that she loves Jesse because she loves the inherent romance and adventure of falling for a ghost and bringing him back to life through determination and love, that he's more of a character than a person to her.
and
Lucie was basically thrust into the middle of an epic romantic adventure that fit perfectly into her comfortable world of fantasy novels, and it just stayed that way.
I like Lucie fine, but I feel like she ended the narrative exactly as she began it. All of the other characters grew a lot, and Lucie's immaturity is so stark by the end. The only exception to this rule besides Lucie is Jesse, who like you acknowledged has no canon personality besides in the moment where he's utterly awful to Grace.
I periodically think about this, and I have wondered before if Cassie purposely made Jesse a cardboard cutout. Lucie/Jesse is clearly a fairy-tale-esque story, and perhaps she wanted people to be able to project whatever they wanted onto the "Jesse" void so they would feel as though he could be their dream fairytale prince. I don't think so, though, I think this is giving way too much credit to the narrative.
I think it's really interesting how (in my experience) being super underwhelmed with Lucie/Jesse is the TLH fan standard. I know two people who like them, which is great! I'm really close with one! I adore her! But like, "Lucie/Jesse is underwhelming" seems to be a take that 99.9% of TLH fans share, and it's so odd that they overwhelmingly missed the mark.
Re: Lucie and Grace, yeah. Agree.
Here's what I would have done with Ghostwriter (if I couldn't just background them and make them Malcolm's backstory):
Lucie and Grace work hard to ressurect Jesse. Ultimately, though, they fail and Jesse fades. This is the end of ChoI - he is just dead now instead of having come back to life. Lucie can no longer see him, and ChoT is not just her grief cycle but also her "holy shit I have to stop living in fantasy lala land" growth moment. It would have been such a moment of growth for Lucie and could have been poignant as fuck - and, since Jesse is just a cutout, would have only really been sad on a "poor Lucie" level. Grace and Lucie bond in their grief and become really close friends, which is their ending. Much more satisfying for Grace since she would have a friend after Kit died; much more satisfying for Lucie as an arc of growth.
I'm also saying this as a noted hater of tragedy, so I'm very secure in my knowledge that it's a hell of a good plotline. Also, Malcolm watching this failure could have been SO cool. Especially if Lucie, not doing well, had a confrontation with him for failing to resurrect Jesse. And then she refuses to call Annabel - not because she can't. Like, Malcolm's story would have developed even more layers.
If Cassie had been willing to call Jesse the plot device that he was instead of hurriedly trying and failing to give him a semblance of personality in ChoT, we could have had so much more with them.

A Wee Bit of Shopping
Tumblr media
"Just… what exactly are we doing here?"
Jess eyed the Au Ra woman beside her warily as Kali confidently responded, "Shopping."
"Shopping? For what?" While Thavnair certainly had its fair share of shops and stalls lining the colorful, tile-paved streets, there wasn't anything she could think of that she needed there. Both her and Varrus' weapons and armor were in perfectly fine repair, and between her beloved necklace, her Eternity Ring and her ruby earrings, she had all the jewelry she could ever want.
Yet Kali chose not to respond, instead coming to a stop before one particular stall, draped from top to bottom with fine fabrics and silks.
"Greetings, Lady Kal'istae," the merchant greeted, a wide smile upon his face - someone she knew, evidently.
"And good day to you, Rastare," she replied, her tail flicking as her lavender-rimmed eyes perused the merchant's wares. And while his fancy fabrics and ornate beadery were indeed gorgeous, Jess couldn't imagine what they were there for.
"Is there something you need?" Jess asked, eyeing the woman's already-ornate outfit, from the modest halter-top to the blue silk sash hanging down to her skirts below - the perfect gear for a dancer of her skill.
"On the contrary, it's something you need." The Au Ra grinned.
"Me?!"
She nodded. "You, my dear, are in dire need of a few… wardrobe updates."
"What do you mean?" Jess glanced down to her leather and scale armor, quite beautiful, if she did say so herself.
Yet Kali chose to ignore her, instead flicking through the merchant's racks until she found, presumably, what she was looking for, producing a dark red, silken bustier with a matching short skirt, wisps of chiffon draping from the bottoms to the floor, both adorned with gold-beaded chains.
"Here."
She may as well have been handing the Highlander a viper, for the way she recoiled with widened eyes.
"What? Me? In this?"
The Au Ra nodded.
"How can you even wear something like this?" She gently plucked the thin fabric between her fingers. "There's not even an ilm of protection!"
"Jess," Kali's eyes regarded her with a bemused grin, "not everything you wear has to be armored."
"I don't follow."
"And look, it's even your color!"
"My color?"
Kali nodded, snorting as she evidently caught the Highlander's confusion. "You cannot mean to tell me that you haven't noticed everything you wear is the same hue. Including your wedding dress."
"Says you," Jess snorted, "the one who only ever wears blue."
"It's purple."
"I really think it's-"
With a disgruntled sigh, the smaller woman cut her off, giving her friend a gentle-but-firm shove towards the rear of the stall. "Just try it on, will you? For me?"
Though she had more than half a mind to argue, she also knew her friend could be quite a force to be reckoned with, despite her tiny size. And so, with a sigh, she acquiesced, shuffling to the makeshift changing stall in the back, painstakingly peeling off every last layer of armor until she stood uncomfortably exposed, only a thin curtain hiding her form from the rest of the bustling marketplace.
Yet… she was doing it for a friend. With that resolve in mind, she gently pulled on the thin, delicate fabric, the outfit fitting her surprisingly well… Aside from the fact that she felt, and looked, she was certain, entirely out of place in the scanty clothing. It clearly hadn't been made with her in mind, the ornate jewelry clashing hard against her toned, muscular form, the large scar across her abdomen visible for all to see.
Not that any of that seemed to phase Kali, the Au Ra's lavender eyes glowing in delight as Jess pulled back the curtain.
"It's gorgeous!" she gasped, bringing her hands up over her heart.
"It may be, but I am not," Jess huffed. "Are you satisfied? Can I take it off now?"
"No!" the blue-haired woman hissed, her tone equal parts insistent and threatening. "You are gorgeous, and you are going to wear it."
Before she could protest further, the dancer turned back to the merchant, handing him a small bag of gil.
"There. It's done. Now you can't very well refuse, can you?"
Jess merely gave a groan. "Alright. Fine. I'll keep it. Just let me go and change-"
"Absolutely not." Quick as a whip, Kali reached out and grasped the woman's wrist, preventing her from slinking back inside the changing room. "You are not taking that off, at least, not until a certain someone has had all the time they'd like to… appreciate it."
Jess raised an eyebrow, doing her best to suppress the blush she felt rising up her cheeks.
"Kali! Was this your plan all along?!"
Judging by the twinkle in the Au Ra's lavender eyes… she had her answer.

I just finished Jojolion today. Usually when I liveblog, I like to keep my actual critical thoughts about the story to a minimum and mostly just point out things I think are interesting and funny, but now that I've read the entire thing, I'll share my full opinion of it. (Word count: 1160)
Overall, I had a lot of fun with Jojolion. It has some great moments, themes, and characters, some even being some of my favorites in the entire series, I think. I loved the Higashikata family and how the story was all about them as well as the main theme of family bonds. The story tries to bait you into thinking that they're evil for a while, and some of them flip back and forth between being endearing and being evil, but then you learn to see them as all adorable weirdos just trying to succeed (...except Joshu, who was definitely a shitbag, and Jobin, who was kind of a dark-gray area in terms of villainy). Josuke also fits himself into the dynamic and is gradually accepted by them as part of the family, which was really sweet.
My favorite character in Jojolion is, without a doubt, Yasuho. I'm going to be honest, I think she's one of my favorite characters in the entire series. She was a lot of fun every time she was on screen, I love Paisley Park as an ability, and I just ended up caring about her the most out of any character. I think she and Josuke are really both the main characters; she's given pretty much equal importance to him and they go through arcs that parallel each other. Her backstor(ies) hit me like a truck each time, especially the one with her dysfunctional family and her father.
I also absolutely adored Yasuho and Josuke's relationship with each other. Paralleling Josuke being more obviously alone and unsure of his identity with his total memory loss, Yasuho is left essentially without a family as well due to her living as an only child with a neglectful single mother. Because of that, Josuke and Yasuho really only have each other for most of the story. There's also an obvious romance between the two of them that I actually liked and cared about, which is an accomplishment (usually, romances tend to disinterest me).
Even the characters I didn't like weren't too bad. Joshu was definitely the worst, but the story knew what it was doing with him and he didn't get in the way too much nor was his nonsense shenanigans left unacknowledged. In other words: he got the shit beat out of him constantly and ended up losing a limb by the end, so I'm satisfied. I still feel like his aggressive perverseness was... very unneeded, though.
Rai Mamezuku was another character I disliked. I have been informed by mutuals that he's a fan-liked character, but... I just don't see it, sorry. He was needlessly cruel to Yasuho and even drove a wedge between her and Josuke for a while to make room for a sort-of implied love triangle-thing with Tooru, and I just didn't like it. When he wasn't being a dick to my favorite character, he still wasn't doing anything that made me like him very much.
While there were a couple snags here and there, though, the characters are overall my favorite part of Jojolion. A lot of them were genuinely heart wrenching (Kaato, Jobin, and Tsurugi come to mind) and the relationships between them were really tightly written.
That being said, while the characters were written tightly, the whole of Jojolion was... not. This is where we get into some major issues I had with it: the noticeably worst thing about Jojolion was its story. I get the strong suspicion that there was no real plan here; it was messy and near-incoherent at times, especially towards the end, and it introduced far too many story aspects way too late in that resulted in a strange ending that visibly did not resolve all of the problems it introduced.
Tooru was an interesting concept of a main villain and I can't say I disliked him, but he shows up so randomly at chapter 81 and is only even confirmed to be the main bad guy at the last ten chapters of the story (and he's defeated before the last two of those). He didn't have enough time to introduce himself as a character and just kind of left me with a feeling of "huh?"
The final fight felt the most written-along-the-way out of the entire story. It felt like play-fighting with an annoying kid that keeps making stupid imaginary one-ups and rules to make themselves win. Soft & Wet's "Go Beyond" ability was... what do I even say about it? "Actually, Josuke had this super secret ability nobody ever knew about where he can make invisible bubbles that defy all of reality, including as the perfect counter to Tooru's ability!" What?
Not to mention all of the loose ends that were just... left there? Why do people get Stands when they go near the Wall Eyes? What was with the strange humanoid bite marks they all received? Was Karera Sakunami really intended to show up only once and never come in again? One of the first reasons given for Josuke to acquire the Locacaca fruit was to cure Holy Joestar-Kira's illness, paralleling Holy Joestar's illness in part three, but then Holy goes comatose and every last Locacaca fruit is destroyed, and she's just totally forgotten about with no follow-up as to what happened with her or any sort of resolution to her story. It was confusing and unsatisfying, to say the least.
The ending itself was also kind of odd. While it's nice to see what happened to Lucy Steel and get an alternate-universe Joseph Joestar, the weird fight with a random rock person from the 1940s felt like it was wasting time that could've been spent with a stronger conclusion to the characters we've actually been with the whole time. The very last scenes with the family in tears, yet the generations-long curse finally being broken was nice, but it still left me feeling odd.
I am of the opinion that Jojolion's story was a total mess; I feel like it tried introducing way too much way too late and ended up writing itself in a corner that it couldn't get out of in any satisfying way (and often didn't even get out of at all, in Holy's case). It was confusing to read and its last chapters had me going "Wait, it's ending already? But what about all of the things it totally forgot to clear up? No, don't say 'Part 8 End!!' Nooo!"
Though, if I had to pick between something with a really good story but bad characters vs. something with really good characters and a bad story, I would always pick the latter option. Jojolion's characters, as well as their relationships and arcs, were so good that a lot of them immediately rocketed into my main favorites.
Jojolion isn't bad, in my opinion- it has a lot of great moments, and when it knew what it was doing, it did it well. It just bit off a lot more than it could chew and that resulted in a very messy, though still enjoyable experience.

Lips trailed across the expanse of Solomon’s skin, a kiss placed along each muscle, following the curves mark that made up the pacts seared deep into him. Each one was revered as he went, and Simeon prayed that the demons who shared the bonds with his partner couldn’t feel how he lingered on each one. He hesitated at the scars that marred his pale skin from his recent potion accident, afraid to disturb them and cause him pain. So, instead, he kissed around them, wishing his holy magic was enough to soothe the burns and end the ache.
Solomon watched with a glint in his eye as Simeon’s lips ghosted over his chest. He was perfectly fine. It had only been a small fire and he had contained it quickly, but the angel still worried too much. It was sweet and caring and gentle, but watching his lover at this particular angle gave him ideas that weren’t so pure. If only he would go a little lower to take care of the problem between his legs that was slowly developing. His pants were going to become uncomfortable very soon if Simeon kept going.
Solomon smiled down Simeon and ran a hand through his hair, brushing away the hair that blocked his face, “As much as I would love to continue… I think we better stop before your mouth is around my cock.” He was straightforward with what he was thinking about, even if it wasn’t appropriate for the situation. He was too old to waste time with subtlety.
Blue-green eyes moved to look up at him through full lashes and Solomon cursed internally. He was already struggling with keeping himself from pushing the angel down to focus those lips where he really needed them, but now he was sure his resolve was a single strand away from snapping.
“You aren’t well enough for that.” Carefully, Simeon dragged himself up Solomon’s body, caging the wizard between his large muscled arms and staring down at him with eyes equally full of longing. He leaned down, locking their lips together with hunger and rapture.
Solomon melted into the kiss, thanking God for Simeon’s very existence. Perhaps it was time for him to start going to church again? Although, he doubted God would appreciate the way he looked at Simeon; a treasure to be held; someone to hold as he was led down into loving embraces and whispered words of devotion; a Renaissance painting made flesh that Solomon wanted to stare at and wonder how the artist had possibly captured details so fine and perfect. Except that perfect man was here with him.
Solomon broke away from the kiss, lips full and swollen from the unspoken desire between them, “If I wasn’t injured?” He wanted to know he wasn’t the only one that was overcome with need. He needed to know that Simeon was just as lost to their impulses as he was; that he was holding back despite what they both wanted.
Simeon understood what was being asked of him and, yes, he did feel the same way. He placed a chaste kiss against Solomon’s cheek before whispering his own desires to him, “If you were unharmed, I wouldn’t be satisfied with so little of you. I would run my lips across your entire body. Kiss every part of you until there was not one inch that I hadn’t tasted. I would carve my devotion into your very soul so that you would never forget how much I crave you. I would flood your every thought with me, make you desire me as much as I do you. Make you beg and plead for the love that I could never deny you.
“Only then, once you returned those feelings, would I begin to grant your wish. I would stretch you out slowly around my fingers, teaching you to open yourself up to me. Every word out of your mouth would be asking for more, telling me how good I make you feel but that you cannot be satisfied until your legs are wrapped around me and I am buried inside of you. I would make you cum around my fingers many times before I dared settle between your leg though; teach you that all of me wants to please you. Only once I was sure you understood would I let you sink on my cock.”
‘God’, Solomon thought, ‘bless this angel.’

Warning! IDOLiSH7 part 5 spoiler
Tumblr media
Thank you, So-chan, for representing my current emotion.
Every IDOLiSH7 story update always left me breathless, and Part 5 climax is no exception.
Re:vale's relationship is very stable as of now, and I think that stability is important going forward, both for themselves and for supporting their juniors. I'm glad Momo and Yuki communicate better now, let's hope that they keep it that way.
ZOOL's bond just keep getting stronger now that they have a supportive manager by their side. Utsugi is truly the person they need. Also, past me wouldn't have guessed that now I think of ZOOL as cute kids (or a guy with jealous girls for a harem lol). However, Tora and to a lesser extend Mina still have their own hung-ups that they need to resolve (probably in part 6).
Tumblr media
And TRIGGER... Holy shit. Gaku and Ryuu, while they had their own struggles, are such sturdy presences that they could support each other and especially Tenn in those difficult times. I always have a hard time talking about them (compared to ZOOL and Re:vale) not because I dislike them, but because they understand themselves the best.
As for Tenn, I'm glad he has Ryuu and Gaku. It's been such a slow progress to make him able to rely on other people, but he did. And he opened up about his struggle as Riku's big brother. FINALLY! It's a sentiment that I've felt over and over, but it's good that he has older people around him who treat him both as their equal and younger. Because he relied on them, Tenn was finally able to help Takamasa to part with Zero.
I'm super satisfied with the resolution to Takamasa's plot thread. The fact that it needs TRIGGER, not just Tenn, for him to be able to say goodbye to his dear friends is amazing. I'm also glad that everyone who has beef with Takamasa is able to symphatize with him because they understand the feeling of being left behind. It's such a perfect conclusion, and it's only possible because of TRIGGER's determination. They're super cool! As expected of TRIGGER!! TRIGGER IS THE BEST!!!
Meanwhile, IDOLISH7... Hoo boy, not gonna lie but I'm worried about them. At the end of part 5, Re:vale, ZOOL, and TRIGGER are in a condition where they will be okay going forward in part 6 (except if there's a new conflict). But IDOLiSH7 is unrevealing at the seams now.
Tumblr media
I'm not worried about Phytag trio, because Yama-san, Nagi, and Mitsu have found their strengths. I think I can safely say that Yama-san is out of the woods now as he has made peace with himself regarding Chiba Shizuo. And while Nagi is still mourning Haruki, his healing is progressing nicely. Plus, his relationship with Seto has gotten better. Their character developments are important because I know their reliability will be needed as well because we've seen how Mitsu's character development affects Iori and his decision-making.
The pandora box which contains Iori helping with producing IDOLiSH7 and controlling Riku is something that a lot of managers (including me) thought would blow up in everyone's face since part 1 (and especially part 3). Iori had warned Tsumugi multiple times to keep it a secret, because he knew it would hurt Mitsu again. He also told Riku to keep it a secret because he knew "controlling" Riku wouldn't be taken so well.
But we underestimated Mitsu.
Tumblr media
Because Mitsu has learned to appreciate and love himself (which took him until part 5), he can see others' actions more objectively without his lack of self-esteem hindering him. He can see now that Iori is only trying to help everyone in a way he knows best. Mitsu understands Iori and himself. He even admitted that he would be pissed if Iori had said it sooner, but because Iori said it now he can realize that Iori kept it a secret because Iori doesn't want the past to repeat again--because his little brother is scared of his anger.
Iori didn't realize how much Mitsu has grown, and neither did most of us, me included. Mitsu's belief in Iori made Iori spilled literally everything about what he did--although he only keeps the controlling Riku part to himself, Riku, and Mitsu (compared to how he revealed his involvement with IDOLiSH7 production). While Mitsu has his reservations ("'control' isn't a word you use to talk about someone..."), he believes Iori also only wants the best for Riku and IDOLiSH7.
The domino effect for this is Iori telling the truth to Riku, which is the possibility that Tenn might be in danger at the opening night for the musical Zero. He learned that it's better to take risks rather than Riku losing trust in him in the future. He learned from Mitsu's reaction, that maybe telling the truth isn't as scary as he thought it would be. Sure, Riku almost had an attack from the shock of the news, but Riku gave control to Iori who prove that he could do it just fine--calming Riku down while simultaneously explaining his thoughts.
As of now, Iori's control over Riku is still a good thing, but I'm worried unlike Producer Iori, this one would bite everyone in the butt. Thinking about how they write the reveal of Producer Iori as not a big deal, I'm scared that they're giving us a false sense of peace to just drop a nuclear bomb on us later.
Tumblr media
I'm kind of worried about MEZZO", especially Tama. My heart physically hurts when I hear him think about how unfair it is for So-chan to have repaired family bonds and dreams while he has nothing (as expected of KENN's voice acting skill). He doesn't resent So-chan, but he can't help but feel jealous. But that jealousy isn't an ugly thing, as it motivates him to look for his passion. And he found it--dancing. He wants to be better so he can support IDOLiSH7 better. But that means he needs to leave IDOLiSH7 temporarily.
I hope it'll go like Producer Iori reveal, which is something that we thought would be disastrous but apparently not, but I'm also worried about So-chan. So-chan is still taking baby steps in improving his family relationships and pursuing his dreams, and if his biggest supporter leave I don't know how it might affect him. Maybe it'll make him stronger because he wants to make Tama proud, or maybe it'll make him waver because he doesn't have anyone he can be honest with. Ugh... I thought they're gonna be fine but apparently not.
Now, for the twins, I'm super glad that they finally made up. It's been such an up-and-down ride with those two since part 1, but it always hurt whenever they pass each other. In trying to protect Riku, Tenn pushed him away. In turn, it made Riku lashed out at Tenn. Tenn's actions and Riku's reactions are understandable but that doesn't mean it's okay. It's painful how they keep hurting each other because they care. But after finally fulfilling their childhood wish, the both of them has genuinely exchanged "I'm sorry"s and "I love you"s--and peacefully said goodbye to Nanase twins.
Tumblr media
There had been Nanase Tenn and Nanase Riku before, but that twins are gone. Now, they are TRIGGER's Kujo Tenn and IDOLiSH7's Nanase Riku.
It's such a bittersweet resolution, and it's a conclusion to the twins' story that I know most (if not all) managers have predicted. After all, when they first reunite in part 1, Tenn and Riku both acknowledged each other as rivals. It's one thing to know that there's no Nanase twins anymore, but it's another to accept it. The both of them knew that they're not the same people as they were before, but their deep-seated wish on wanting to be that Nanase twins were still present all the way until Part 5 climax.
Now, Riku knows that Tenn is never the invincible big brother and Tenn knows that Riku is strong enough to protect him in return.
That doesn't mean that they'll treat each other as strangers. On the contrary, I can say that their relationship will be stronger--because they don't have their regret chaining them. They can support each other because they can see each other's weaknesses and strengths--although it may be another story because Tenn still wants to look cool in front of Riku and Riku likes to be spoiled by Tenn.
(Also, their duet is so beautiful. Saito Soma and Ono Kensho delivered as Tenn and Riku. I've been waiting for their duet since 2018 and I finally get it. Maybe after this they'll give us the long-awaited MechaLulla duet...)
Tumblr media
Although Riku's conflict with Tenn has been resolved, his personal conflict just keeps compiling like a mountain. It's kind of harrowing because while Riku is always trying to be optimistic, he has these negative thoughts that just never go away. At least his guilt about Tenn has been appeased. But now that Riku has seen the scenery of "the last stage", and his repeated thoughts about how IDOLiSH7 is an eternity in a moment, I wonder how he'll go from here on out. He's okay right now because he has IDOLiSH7 and especially Iori, but it's pretty telling that they didn't show his reaction about moving out of the dorm. Adding it with Tamaki possibly going abroad, I'm afraid of the impact these changes will do to Riku. Especially if what my sister (who has a degree in psychology so her opinion isn't baseless) said about Riku possibly having depression since part 4 is any indication.
(Oh my god, as a Riku oshi I can't stand this!! They've been beating Riku on the head since part 1!! Riku is strong, I know that, but he's also fragile!! He already let go of Nanase Tenn, what more do you want?! I can't take this anymore. I just want to see Riku and everyone happy...)
Well, that being said, I'll still patiently wait for Part 6!

Note
this is baseless speculation as ive done the bare minimum deep thinking on potd but you mentioned the master’s bitterness because of ttc when talking about the forced regen and that has me thinking a little bit like. i haven’t made real sense of what happened but maybe him becoming her stems directly from that bitterness and the knowledge that there is a piece of the doctor in every time lord. if the master is the doctor then he’s the special one, not her. in s12 he says something like ‘you went around acting like you were special and now i know you really are’ and so mayhaps the forced regen can maybe be seen as him wanting to level the playing field? take her down from the pedestal he’s put her on bc of ttc or allow him to get up there too. the doctor made the time lords but now the master is the doctor and he’s making his own bigger army of special cybermen (? is that what he was doing? i maybe didnt pay enough attention) it’s the whole ‘we’re not so different, you and i’ thing. he’s just trying to make them equals again and it’s such a big deal for him that if he has to kill her to achieve his goals then so be it. maybe. they still coulda fleshed it out a bit more (that’s an understatement)
unrelated but man it’s so frustrating to have to come up with all these what ifs for intention like if it had been written well then we’d know! it feels like an attempt at making up for how much things were spelled out in s11 like a 180° turn from infodumping to not even having the time or care to rationalize the stuff that happens. it’s hilarious that ive seen so much more speculation about the things that happened and were supposedly resolved IN the episode than about the (literal) cliffhanger. good riddance.
him becoming her stems directly from that bitterness and the knowledge that there is a piece of the doctor in every time lord. if the master is the doctor then he’s the special one, not her.
yeah thats how i'm reading it atm. there's also this deep self hatred w Dhawan master so i think part of it is supposed to be that too, especially with the emphasis of the "i erased you doctor. don't let me go back to being me" line as it's being reversed (+ dhawan emphasised this self hatred in his interviews)
"it feels like an attempt at making up for how much things were spelled out in s11 like a 180° turn from infodumping to not even having the time or care to rationalize the stuff that happens."
this has been on my mind a lot actually. i dont think it HAS been a 180 but i think its symptoms of the eps/place in the era.
we still get mountains and mountains of unnecessary exposition, but it's all about just. what's happening in the plot. we dont get much insight into whats motivating the characters (or if we do, it's heavy handed exposition like dan's "oh i almost died so i want to leave" which is simple and understandable) but say 13, the master, yaz i'm left just like.... why'd any of them do any of that??? unless you sit there compiling notes about one off lines the characters had in the past + what the cast and crew have said they were TRYING to do.
compared to s11 i think it's just become more noticable because back in the beginning they were still building the characters (lol) + there was less going on plot wise for them to react to in ways that felt in or out of character. but at this point the END of the era we should KNOW these characters well enough to understand why they're doing xyz. but say like, yaz's reason for leaving the tardis is so difficult to understand because it just sort of. happens. i think a lot of that can be built on the back of weak characterisation before, but as i've argued already in the case of yaz i feel her exit goes completely AGAINST her defining characteristics and "Doctorification" arc as i understand them.
i feel the same with 13. her defining character has always been about her being "socially awkward" and closed off, an arc which like. in any other situation the logical satisfying growth and resolution is "the doctor opens up to her friends". but no instead it's like. don't bother making an effort actually. it's fine to be an ass and just pass it off half heartedly as social awkwardness.
they all jsut feel so static and one note, but equally this characterisation is sometimes just ignored when its convenient for the plot or another piece of characterisation (e.g., i'd say one of yaz's defining characteristics in the beginning is she's quite stubborn... but not really to the doctor, because she's been so beaten down after being snapped at/told off every time she dares ask the doctor something (which then i guess is supposed to tie into her... loving the dr ???))
again like the logical conclusion to yaz's arc mirrors something like Clara or Martha's. either she needs to realise the Doctor not returning her feelings (or, if you think she DOES return them like, at least not being willing to act on them) hurts too much and leaves for her own adventures, or they have a tragic thing where yaz strives too hard to show herself like. worthy or whatever and crashes and burns. instead she just... sort of walks off? for no apparent reason??
of course, that's not to say that those arcs HAD to finish in those ways, but DO SOMETHING with them. why bring them up as character flaws/traits if they're not going to go on a journey alongside the plot and character??? everyone just feels so static. i could watch TWWFTE and TPOTD back to back and i'd be like "oh that Doctor had a short run"
off from character, but i also think the "over exposition" in s11 vs say flux and that in s11 the plots were simpler, and so the exposition was just repeating things you already knew/had seen so it was like beating a dead horse with The Point, whereas in this and flux, there's so much going on that it's like a new point every second. "paintings are stolen. the master is rasputin. oh cyberman planet. oh there's daleks in volcanoes. the master is doing something funky with regeneration and the doctor. ... wait the doctor is regenerating.... now they're dhawan?? ... wait no but it's just the master. but then why does the tardis let him in ?? so it's the doctor?? then why are they acting like that it must be they've merged. why is tegan climbing down a shaft. oh they solve it by... making all volcanoes on earth metal now??? that seems a very very bad idea. that kid from the beginning i forgot about, the master can apparently control it and kills the doctor w it." it's just wham wham wham new point about something completely different that if you're just trying to watch it you blink and miss like 3 different plot points. (or maybe thats my undiagnosed potential adhd unable to keep up lmao)
it’s hilarious that ive seen so much more speculation about the things that happened and were supposedly resolved IN the episode than about the (literal) cliffhanger.
LMAO literally i've spent (checks calendar) 3 days just trying to make sense of the plot and character choices chibnall era has been EXHAUSTING

Okay I have some thoughts about the "Freddie" episode. Strap the fuck in (spoilers ofc)
- First of all I have never in my life felt more capable of reaching through a screen and strangling the life out of a fictional character. Nandor the Relentless I am coming for your ass and if Guillermo doesn't kill you first I will.
- Anyway, now that that's out of the way, my main concern with the episode: Marwa. Holy shit. I've had a firmly held expectation that she would be "freed" by the end of the season. And by "freed" I mean given her original free will back, her own original personality, her own original body.
If (and I do mean if - I don't want to jump to the conclusion with one episode left that the writers don't have something more planned) . . . If this is their version of "freeing" Marwa . . . No. Just no.
I do still have some faith that they may resolve this in the last ep in a better way. There have been implications throughout the season that Marwa is somehow fighting against the wishes that have altered her, as well as the girls night where Nadja said that she'd fit right in with them - which I took as a possibility for her to even stick around in the future. But only time will tell, I'm trying to trust.
- My second concern: Guillermo. This actually, ACTUALLY might be the last straw for him. They've done so many awful things to him, but we have NEVER seen him this hurt.
And also, it's ALL Nandor this time. Nandor this season has finally been standing up for Guillermo, treating him as an equal, pushing back against Laszlo and Nadja still being assholes to him. But they weren't around this time. All the blame is solely at Nandors feet, and to Guillermo I'm sure some of the hurt is coming from the fact that he feels like all that progress was bullshit. Even the person who was finally putting him on a level playing field didn't give a shit about how he felt when it counted. Even when all Guillermo’s done this season is care about Nandor’s happiness, even if Nandor didn't want any of it to begin with.
And now they're back at square one. Actors and writers have said all season that Guillermo had an expiration date for sticking around, and now it's come, just not the way we expected. Colin is grown up now and Nandor "found happiness," except he found it through Guillermo’s happiness and ended up driving it away in the process. The only difference from what Guillermo (and probably all of us) expected after this expiration date is that he doesn't have the positive outlook for his future that he had at the outset. It seemed like a lot of that hinged on Freddie unfortunately, (a common thing to happen for someone who has never had a serious relationship before and has a history of toxic over-dependency on others) and also the funds he was taking from the nightclub which is now no longer making money and he spent his savings on going to visit Freddie so that's gone too. I can't even think too long about the implications of this loss of money on how he is supporting his mother because I start getting way too depressed.
- My third concern, and kind of related to the other two, is the possible complete lack of meaning behind plot threads that they were seeming to set up and may potentially go nowhere. It may seem like a stupid thing, especially for a comedy, or even an entirely personal grievance of mine, but it’s just not satisfying or (more importantly) enjoyable storytelling to be given hints or be fed implications that go nowhere. And I’m not talking about queerbaiting - at this point this show cannot be accused of that and that discussion has been had. I’m talking about having character arcs being naturally built towards their seemingly inevitable conclusion, only to be swept out from under the audience’s feet, leaving them confused and hurting for no real reason. Or having the script and cinematography intentionally highlighting certain moments or plot points, shoving them in the viewer’s face, only for them to go nowhere or mean nothing. It just sucks.
And again, I get that it’s a comedy, you’re not exactly watching for the plot most of the time. But that’s also exactly why I could see myself getting annoyed if the last episode doesn’t address some of this: it is a comedy, and therefore the audience should never be held in an extended feeling of pain or anguish on behalf of the characters and the plot. It felt like shit got real this episode, like, a little too real. And that’s not inherently a bad thing, but if they can’t stick the landing on bringing the tone somewhat back to a level state again, I think it’s going to leave a really nasty taste in the audience’s mouth and it’s just going to make watching more of the show a more difficult and even painful experience.
- Final thoughts: I still have hope and I want to trust that the writers have a plan to bring things to a relative equilibrium for the finale (which I know is supposed to end on an apparently pretty massive cliffhanger, jesus christ). They’ve been so amazing, and they have built up a lot of good will with the fans (myself included) that they may just be cashing in right now. This episode just felt like such a punch to the gut that came kind of out of nowhere, so it’s tough. But I’m willing to give the benefit of the doubt because of everything that has led up to this episode.
And while I wanted to get my thoughts out, even all the negative ones, I ask that everyone give some benefit of the doubt as well. And whatever happens that you are kind to yourself and to others, both in the fandom and on the wwdits crew. At the end of the day, it is just a show. I know a lot of people care a lot about it (again, myself included) but it is just a show and if it’s getting to the point where a fandom is getting genuinely upsetting, just step away. Take a breath. It’s not a big deal. I’ve been in fandom spaces for quite a while and I’ve seen things fall apart in so many ways, and I don’t want to see that pattern repeat itself.
One more episode of the season to go. Everyone breathe, and we’ll see what happens.

Do you have good tips on writing a proper romancé slow burn?
‘M writing a book, but I’m worried about my pacing for the story!! Help a sister out fr!!
Tumblr media
I had to go ask a few friends for their opinion because writing slow burn is subconscious for me, I make slow burn out of everything if possible 😂
I think with most Will They Won't They that I write, I don't even know if I want them to end up together or not. I tend to let the plot progress their personal arc and then see if they fit with each other at the end of it. If they don't, I won't force them to be with each other.
I don't believe in that "emotionally pay-off means they have to end up together". There is more that matters to a character than romance, some people are built that way. I also don't believe in ramping up as much tension as possible as well, if they want each other so much that it's that obvious, then the slow burn is frustrating for me.
This is a personal bias, but a story, where the romance overtakes a goal that the character spent a lifetime building up, is mind-numbing to read for me. It can be done nicely, I believe, but I've never seen it in action. This is even more evident in "enemies to lovers" which is why I don't like the trope, a lot of the time, one of them gets "redeemed" to make the romance work. And that means giving up on their long-time goal like... how is that meant to be a satisfying development?
What matters most for me in romantic development is that each of the characters has their own personal goals. If their personal goals matter more than entering a relationship, then have them focus on that first. A full-fledged, developed character often creates more for the reader to invest in, especially when it comes to romance.
Slow burns do not equally mean slow pace by the way. An effective slow burn is one where romance is sprinkled across an active plot. Intertwine romantic tension with the intensity of everything that's going on, but also allow them down time together when the emotional stake isn't as high. This helps the characters (and the readers) learn about each other better too.
Couples born from high emotional intensity might not mesh as well when that situation no longer exists. We need to see that they get along in their day-to-day, too.
As for pacing, I have less to say about this because a lot of the pacing I do is focusing on pushing the plot forwards without stressing the reader: "creates conflicts" > "characters work to deal with the problems" > "conflicts resolved partially or fully for now" > "down time for the characters and the readers to breathe" > "repeats the process"
If there's no time to breathe or any downtime for the reader to pull back from the plot, it will overwhelm them. But if there's too much downtime, it'd be a sludge to get through.
You should also develop subplots selectively to slow down the story if you feel that it's moving too fast. It helps give depth to the story, too, as we'll see that there's more to the world than just your main character. But too many subplots derail the main story. Everything is in moderation, what matters most is that the subplot should bolster the main story, not exist as an entity of its own.
