Favourite Fandoms
@puddlejumper72-blog-blog tagged me in this, and I’ve had to give it some thought because there have been so many over the years!
I tend only concentrate on a few fandoms at any one time and get deeply involved in them, but then I’ll cycle back to past fandoms when new content is released or I decide to rewatch old episodes. So not everything listed below is a fandom that I’m active in now, but I have been in the past and might well be again in the future.
Always presents
Star Trek was my first love. I grew up in the 90s when TNG was first airing and was obsessed. The first fic I ever wrote was for TNG when I was still in primary school. I also really like Voyager and Discovery. I think I was too young to appreciate DS9 when it came out but I want to rewatch it because I think I’d appreciate it more now.
SG-1: Another seminal show. This aired on a Sunday afternoon in the UK and I remember watching it with my Mum while she did the ironing. Later a colleague introduced my to SGA and I really enjoyed that too
Current obsessions
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina - I know I’m not the target audience, but if they’re going to cast Lucy Davis, Miranda Otto and Michelle Gomez then I’m going to watch and have feelings about it...
Sanctuary - I’m going through a revival at the moment. Imagine what this show could have done with a Netflix-level budget
Love In Recovery - I’ll be amazed if anyone’s heard of this but it’s a Radio 4 sitcom and I’ve written unpublished fic for it for an audience of...me
Luna Nera - I just watched it and it was pretty diverting quarantine viewing. Now waiting for more people to discover it
Less active at the moment but may be due a revival
Battlestar Galactica
Orphan Black
The Returned - the French version, I haven’t seen the US remake
The Thick of It - I’ve written a shit tonne of Malcom & Nicola fic
Lewis - the Jean Innocent years
Scott & Bailey - criminally under-appreciated
The Fall - GA: it was always going to happen
Bates Motel - I don’t tend to read/write fic for this because it’s so disturbing, but what a great show
Inhuman Condition - anyone remember this web series starring Torri Higginson and Cara Gee? I wish it had been continued
Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell - I read it every winter
Bleak House - I was obsessed after reading the book. When GA was cast to play Lady Deadlock I carried the obsession over to the series
The Worst Witch - loved it as a child and always watch new series when they air
Doctor Who / Sarah Jane Smith-related spin offs. I haven’t kept up with NuWho in the last few years but will catch up eventually!
Berena - I found an incomplete Prison!AU in my WIP folder and am contemplating finishing it
CSI - the Catherine Willows years
On my to-watch list
The Expanse
Stranger Things
Firefly/Serenity
Veep
Picard
Star Wars - This is kind of embarrasing. I really need to sort it out
If they’d like to play, I tag @princessbethoc, @doctorbeverlycrusher, @missparker, @singofsolace, @notmoreflippingelves, @little-arsonist. If I haven’t tagged you but you’d like to join in, please do!

Happy Premiere Day, Strawberry Scones!
Today Monday, Jan 6  is the UK premiere of Father Brown Series 8! For the next two weeks, a new episode will be shown on consecutive weekdays at 2:15 PM GMT on BBC One and on bbc iplayer.
I can’t wait to flail with you all, but I just wanted to issue a few reminders.
1. This blog (and my personal blog @notmoreflippingelves) will not be spoiler-free. However, I will tag any spoilers on both blogs with “father brown spoilers” so be sure to blacklist it if you don’t want to see any. You are also encouraged to use that tag yourself for spoilery discussion.
2. Reminder again that there is a Discord server  set up for the fandom. If you want to use it to flail in real time, be sure to use “the-confessional” channel which is dedicated to spoiler-friendly discussion.
3. Feel free to send any asks/pms or tag me in stuff if you want to chat. I would love to talk to you, but it might be awhile until I am able to respond. I am based in US (and an additional 5 hrs behind UK followers), but I do plan on watching as soon as I can. I should be able to watch the first 3-4 episodes day of but as I am traveling Friday and starting a new job next Monday, it may take me awhile to catch up on the last six episodes

notmoreflippingelves replied to your post: should i read or … know anything about treasure...
Black Sails adds a lot of depth to two characters (Billy Bones & Captain Flint) that are fairly minor/background. But imo the Long John Silver in Treasure Island is a much much richer and more colorful character than his Black Sails counterpart so he feels like a bit of a letdown. I’d maybe read an outline or something of Treasure Island before watching Black Sails so you understand the gist  but save the book until later (assuming you’ve enjoyed the show) so that you can enjoy both the show’s low-key-charming Silver and the much more dynamic (and pirate fiction codifier) extremely charismatic version from the book.
i was just listening to an episode of the pirate history podcast that said john silver is much different in black sails than in all the other versions, so that makes sense. i guess they didn’t want him to steal the show? :) thanks for all the tips, everyone!

notmoreflippingelves replied to your post “So, i’ve been rewatching Inspector Lewis, and I realized– they talk...”
Technically, the C.S. Lewis episode is the Tolkein one as well. Since they talk about the Inklings which is the literary/writing group that Tolkein and Lewis both belonged to. They also focus on fantasy lit as a genre. They just specifically mention C.S. more b/c they can reference that his pen-name is the same as Robbie Lewis's surname.
true, and fair enough, I’m just enough of a Tolkien nerd that I wanted something a bit more substantial--even if it’s just looking at the difference between Lewis Scholars and Tolkien Scholars in academia--
Like, I can see Lewis and Hathaway watching a Very Serious Debate about, say, Glorfindel happening in pidgeon-Sindarin and just bemused by the whole thing.
Or, perhaps Lewis is the knowledgable one because he read the books/read them with his children, and Hathaway gets surprised/put out because he’s the brainy one.
just---missed opportunities.

inkheart17likes reblogged your post:
I recommend Pushing Daisies with all of my heart....
Thanks. Parks and Rec already has my soul, so it wouldn’t be exactly the new show I am looking for, and I am not sure I have the patience to deal with the Glee and MLP fandoms right now even as a lurker.
Thank you for your rec. I have heard amazing things about Pushing Daisies and I LOVE Jim Dale and Kristin Chenoweth.
Though I think I’m gonna start with Chuck now because there are more episodes, and I’m gonna need lots of episodes and b/c I found out that there are many multiple-episodes arcs of” fake relationship” tropes and I am sooo weak for that trope.
But Pushing Daisies will defo be my second choice.

Help Me Pick a New Show??
So I am finally finished Murder, She Wrote, and I am looking for another show to binge-watch, while I am doing the very long, arduous task of re-screencapping Lewis and TTOI screencaps. Here are a few things to keep in mind.
1. I will be multi-tasking while watching these (most often sorting through ridicuous amounts of screencaps while trying to follow the show in a minimized window)--so I would prefer a show that I don’t have to devote 100% of my undivided attention too.
I am pretty good at following complex story lines, but if the  entire plot (i.e. the plot for more than one episode)  hinges on little tiny  easy-to-miss details or barely-recurring characters with little to no intro, it is probs not the right show.
And please only  shows that are originally in English or have been dubbed. Even though I have promised effingmurrays, I will watch Borgen eventually, this is not the best time/format for this as it will be difficult to follow the subtitles while multitasking.
2. Try to avoid graphic violence, gore, and/or sexuality-- I do not have the strongest stomach and I scare easily. Serial killers in particular terrify me, and while I can handle a few episodes of this at a time in a crime drama arc, I do not want to watch a show where this is the norm. (So Hannibal is most definitely a NO)  I’m also a bit of a prude, though I am getting better, but I would still prefer if nudity is kept to once every few episodes or less.
3. I would prefer something relatively “fluffy” and cute as opposed to gritty, depressing, and intense.-- I am watching these to entertain me during a long and often rather dull process, so I want to have happy, heartwarming feels instead of disturbed and depressed ones. This doesn’t mean it has to be a comedy, or that it isn’t allowed to have angsty moments/characters. Just please no gritty crime show with no happy endings ever.
4. The show should have a total of 20 episodes or more, since it usually takes me at least 1.5 hours (which is 3 or more 45 minute shows) to sort through my ridiculous amounts of Lewis screencaps.(I realize this excludes some foreign shows I wanna watch too, but I’d prefer to have at least a few week’s worth of content so I don’t have to turn around and do this all over again).
Here are some shows I have bingewatched like this before and loved (so more like these): MFMM, Doctor Who, OUAT, Ugly Betty, Jane the Virgin, Castle, MSW, Father Brown.
Here are some of  the shows I am considering (tho I am open to other suggestions): Chuck, Pushing Daises, Friday Night Lights, The Flash, Call the Midwife, Veronica Mars,Star Trek (any and all incarnations)??

I love how even in the Sullivan-centered case, we don't get a first name. Unless we are meant to assume that "Inspector" is his first name.

Notmoreflippingelves watches Downton 4x01 (Part2)
Violet/Moseley Sr.= Ship of my heart
Oh I love it when Thomas is a jerk to people who actually deserve it. It makes such a nice change <3
Awww, yes I am sensing some Rose/Edith foeyay tension. Fun fact about me. I am twice as likely to consider shipping your slash pairing if it's femmslash, five times more likely to consider shipping it if its foe yay, and ten times more likely to ship it if its not the most popular ship in the fandom. So far so good.
I'm actually starting to like Branson a little, which is odd cause I haven't liked him since S1.
No Isobel!!! You need this. This will help. Helping people always perks you up. Don't shut yourself away.
I am loving this Mrs. Hughes plotline.
Currently trying to work out how I feel about Ivy/Jimmy. Part of me thinks he's just trying to seduce her cause she's too innocent to know what he's doing. And part of me thinks this all has something to do with Thomas and uncertainty about sexuality. But part of me wonders if it could be genuine, and Ivy's crush is rather sweet.
My gosh, this nanny is horrible.
I can't take Moseley like this. Just noooo stop. If Fellowes does something stupid like have him kill himself out of depression, I will burn Utica to the ground.
Holy crap, my dad (a.k.a. the biggest Downton fangirl I know) is gonnna freak out of this episode. And I think I'll be home to watch it live with him. <3
"And you think I should choose life?"--No Mary, your grandmother  who loves you more than anything thinks you should kill yourself over your angst. Seriously, why are you even asking this question?
Seriously though is no one gonna talk about the unfortunate conclusions society might draw regarding Isobel, a woman who lives on her own, living alone with a strange man who doesn't have a stellar reputation? Like I'm all for helping the guy, but I'm not sure how I feel about the potential for poor Isobel to become a pariah when she's already depressed? Although I would be interested to see if jealous Clarkson comes of this.
" I know you only pretend to like her to tease me"-- Hmmm... is Jimmy trying to make Albert/Alfred/Tall Ginger jealous because he still sees him as  competition or is this more of the complicated world of Jimmy Kent's sexuality self-discovery?
Oh I'd forgotten that Fanny Dashwood from Sense and Sensibility was joining the cast. Oh how nice; I really like that actress :D
Violet's butler is such a jerk. :(
Also I think I ship Moseley/ Fanny Dashwood a little.
Edith Crawley, you are a seductive, stone cold fox and you're wasting yourself on Mr. Rochester wannabe who looks like the lovechild of Branson and Strallen
Just tell her Mrs. Hughes that Edna was a whiny brat who wasn't particularly good at her job and tried to seduce Branson.
Oh Mrs. P, you tried so hard but all you did was make a mess of everything.
Oh my gosh, Carson, you just make everything worse sometimes don't you? You just know Edna's gonna try again and then Cora will find out and get the wrong impression all because Carson thought this was a bad idea.
CORA <3 <3 <3 <3 <3
Like I'm happy that for once in his life, Robert has genuinely started giving crap about Edith in the past few seasons.
...And right after he says something sensible he goes back to his old ways :(
Awww Carson hug. It almost makes up for how annoying he's been for most of the rest of the episode.
Preview: Oh dear lord, please don't tell me Edna is going for Bates now. NO THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE. YOU LEAVE MY ANNA ALONE D"YAH HEAR!!
HA HA HA. Robert doesn't get to be in charge anymore. :D :D
OOOOO Rose shenanigans. Very good.
