#note that i hate disney's executives

i am watching disney's strange world movie, and i just love that disney's animators are like "we're going to animate actual people that are gay, lesbian, trans, fat, native americans (yeah latinamerican included), black, old, asian, disabled, women and men without all the toxic stereotypes, and not just white skinny characters until Disney starts being the shithole it is and we squeeze the life out of the racist, ableist, homophobic, transphobic, antisemitic and just assholes that are in charge".

I hate seeing people go off about Emma Fuhrmann’s replacement saying that “nO oNe eVEn cArED aBOUt hER”. Like, guys. Guys. Be real right now. You can admit that that was a crappy thing Marvel did. Whether it was Kevin Feige or Peyton Reed or some other random executive that made the decision to recast her and not even tell her, you can admit that it was a messed up thing to do. If you had been there and been a fan of hers after Endgame came out you would’ve seen how happy and excited she was to be Cassie and it’s not just that she had it taken away, they didn’t even have the decency to give her a call. We still don’t even know why she was recast but I’m willing to bet it’s just because Kathryn has more star power; which is ridiculous because not only was Emma’s scene objectively one of the best in the movie* but the whole start of the franchise was when they were taking a chance on the unknowns in Hollywood. I’ve even seen people say that Emma looked too old to play Cassie, as if she isn’t the exact age Cassie is supposed to be and Kathryn isn’t in her mid twenties. Listen, I get it. If you’re a fan of Kathryn, or just excited to see the movie and don’t really care about the Endgame Cassie, then you’re probably inclined to say “Who cares? Move on.”, but Emma probably did. She probably cared when the biggest thing in her career so far was ripped away just because she had a smaller name. She probably cared when she was treated as easily disposable and replaceable. So no. We’re not gonna “move on”. We’re gonna be annoyed about it because it was an objectively bad thing to do. If they wanted Kathryn for the role they should have put her in Endgame. Didn’t want the official Cassie to be shown yet? Too bad, don’t write a scene explicitly showing Cassie and get the poor girl’s hopes up, only to toss her aside like stale bread. I want to make it clear, I’m not trying to bash Kathryn; I’m sure she’ll be great. I’m just, like a lot of other people, still mad at the decision and whoever made it; also the way it was handled. So it really rubs me the wrong way when I see people acting like this was not an insane thing to do, like it wasn’t a remarkably cruel thing to do to a girl who was only 18 or 19 at the time, like it wasn’t emblematic of everything wrong with Disney and Marvel Studios right now. They don’t see people, they just see a dollar sign. You don’t have to pretend it’s anything else.
*Because people may ask. Yes, Scott and Cassie reuniting is one of the best scenes in the movie. And yes, I know, art is subjective and people are free to feel however they want about it, but I think we can all admit that even if it’s not your favorite in the movie it’s just, objectively, an excellent scene. Think about some of the best moments of the movie. “On your left” + The Portal Scene. Cap Weilding Mjölnir. “I am Iron Man”. Great scenes, amazing scenes, memorable scenes. But those scenes are all ten years and countless movies worth of build up. They’re cool and they great to experience but for them to fully land you have to have been there taking notes for every Marvel release of the past decade. That’s not the case with Scott and Cassie reuniting. With that scene, you may not know who Scott is, you may not know who Cassie is (and given how a large part of the MCU fandom at the time didn’t care for the Ant-Man movies, not many really did know), but you do know how important Cassie is to Scott and you know exactly how much he’s lost, how much they both have. You feel the full emotional weight of that scene and it’s not because of ten years of buildup or some fan service pay off moment, it’s because of Paul and Emma.

tuesday again halloween problems (10/31/2023)
not quite an "oops all friends" edition but this edition heavily advised by viewers like you. thank you!
listening
mcr's blood, for seasonal reasons. spotify
Father Finlee by Spence Hood and Justin Ray Stringer is my new favorite song, a spooky prison? folk ballad? elements of the work song and dirge about it. rounds are underutilized in modern music imo.
Finlee played that guard like a fiddle Turned his own fears into a honing missile “Father can you save my soul…” “Well, first you gotta bring me a little C4...”
usually when a song intrigues me like this i try to find interviews or breakdowns of samples or something, but i am coming up flat empty. @dying-suffering-french-stalkers tasting notes: "Volga Boatmen, maybe, but by way of like...1950s/60s Disney choruses? Like Grim Grinning Ghosts?" spotify

reading
somewhat horrifying but unsurprising article about how companies who want (or want to keep) governments contracts can buy out entire DC Metro stations' adspaces. via @andmaybegayer i think?
The Pentagon station, a prime target for reaching DOD staffers, was one of a kind. The Pentagon is the most expensive station to “dominate” according to Outfront Media data which I obtained, even though it has substantially fewer riders than some of the others. Advertising to the 665,786 commuters estimated to visit the Pentagon station in a four week period costs $198,000 (about 30 cents per commuter), before fees. Yet in Gallery Place-Chinatown, a station in downtown DC farther away from government buildings, it costs only $120,000 to reach more than three times as many people (5 cents per commuter).
it is difficult to stress how uncooperative miss mackintosh was during this book's photoshoot. this is genuinely the best one.

i did not enjoy and did not finish Roshani Chokshi's 2018 queer magical intrigue and heist caper in belle epoque france, first in a trilogy. i think there is a mismatch between concept and execution here. i originally had a rather long paragraph about how i'd be interested in a non-new-adult book from her, but after checking her website and seeing that she mostly writes midde-grade and YA, and classifies this book as YA (which doesn't really make sense to me, i think everyone in the core crew can legally drink and i think what i read from this book fits better in New Adult) and has a forthcoming adult book i am not interested in, i think she is simply not an author for me. i reevauated this book with YA in mind, but i think teens deserve books with sophisticated writing and good execution too!
this had a really killer hook but the worldbuilding comes very in thick and fast during the first quarter of the book i read, and felt a little dorling kindersley (here is an eye of horus! on a chinese compass! with a sumerian cipher!). the magical system chokshi uses is novel in its heavy reliance on physical objects and like, countermeasures and counterspells? we get little hints of it as a global system, and it feels very analogous to The Power Of The Computer. a lot of it is based on creation of various physical objects, some of it is mind-based, there are the equivalent of magical stone faraday cages. the macguffin is like. what if a major internet exchange was an object you could carry around.
this magic system is so interesting it makes it disappointing and difficult to break down the distinction between "i don't think the soft-skill worldbuilding through connections and loyalties of characters is that well executed in these first hundred pages" and "hate this specific literary device". we are dropped into a heist at a magical auction where the many magical representatives are attending and rapidly rush through a lineup. this would be a really fun movie or other visual setpiece with intricate costuming choices, but it's hard to show and not tell a complex system of combined familial/cultural/nation-state houses of magic with backstabbing politics when you are rushing through a very time-limited heist. i know that it's the first in a trilogy, but the sheer number of factions and names is very large for a ~400 page trilogy entry. if this were a fucking doorstopper of a series i would have more faith that all will be eventually explained and i will eventually be able to distinguish them all, but i truly don't think she has the pages to do that.
the book's most frequent reviewer praise is that most of the core (but still! very wide! there are so many goddamn names!) cast are colonized or otherwise oppressed people, and i must give this book props for including a bisexual man in the ragtag crew. i read up to the first hundred pages to the first twist, and when the person who joins them at the twist has a voice that is not distinct from the existing gang’s, who are already not distinct from each other, i put the book down. a brief excerpt that does not serve this point very well but serves the following paragraph's point
Tumblr media
this book felt like someone describing their dnd campaign to me. people on goodreads do love this book so i'm sure it does eventually deliver on the heist and found family aspects, but it's simply not for me.
bought this here in houston over the summer ( i think) not sure where

House on Haunted Hill (1959, Castle). this was so charming!!!
"it’s a pity you didn’t know when you started playing murder…that i was playing too." vincent price truly is that bitch. his scenes with his fourth wife in the film, carol ohmart, are electric. they hate each other so much. they've tried to kill each other so many times. she laughs when he reminds her how she poisoned him with arsenic. the sex has got to be insane.
this is a public domain movie that's embedded in its own wikipedia page, lol, but there are various restorations of varying quality floating around.

sending you hal and loki for the character meme <3
Loki
My favorite thing about them: Mentally ill prince with family issues and muderous tendancies, my favourite things.
My least favorite thing about them: how terribly inconsistent their writing is. Each writer has tackled Loki in a wholly new way, and the end result is a jarring mess where what Marvel says the audience should think of Loki and the ways they actually write Loki are completely incongurrant. I fully believe that the reason why AoA works so well is because it had just one writer who really fleshed out Loki's past, present, and possible future characterisations and wrote the series with that in mind at all times.
My favorite canon relationship: I want to say Thor and Loki but part of Thor and Loki being the most inconsistently written characters is that their relationship is completely over the place and it means I can only care some of the time (which I hate for the record. You gave me extremely messed up royal siblings with bonus hero and villain angst, how did you mess that up)
Anyway, have you heard the good news of Loki and Verity? Genderfluid pansexual god of lies meets local ace nerd who has lie detecting powers. Become instant best friends. He rescues her by turning into a unicorn so she can ride him to get away from the police. She jumps on Thor's back in spite of being a very tiny skin and bones human so he'll stop attacking Loki. When the world ends, Loki puts her soul in a bracelet so she won't die. Icon behaviour on both of their counts.
My favorite non-canon relationship: FrostIron. What other ship sustains itself to that degree after only one canon interaction 12 years ago.
(I'm also partial to Loki/Fandral, but that's canon in the comics so doesn't count :p)
The sexuality I headcanon for them: genderfluid pansexual (again, canon in AoA. Disney you will pay for your crimes)
What I’d do if I could spend the day with them: Make them use their powers to act out the Loki season one I have in my head. Then get ice cream.
Random fact about them I like: I will never stop talking about how he goes fishing using a bazooka.
Hal
My favorite thing about them: He deals with his daddy issues so well <3 he's going to get such a good grade in kingship, something that is both normal and possible to achieve <3
My least favorite thing about them: I Am Obliged To Mention The War Crimes
My favorite canon relationship: Henry and Hal. Is it a good relationship? No. Am I endlessly fascinated? Always.
My favorite non-canon relationship: Hal and Henry VI
The sexuality I headcanon for them: Aesexual grey-aromantic. May have some gender stuff that he refuses to acknowledge.
What I’d do if I could spend the day with them: Sit him down with a group of psychiatric specialists while we all frantically take notes and a doctor examines the face scar. Maybe introduce him to the concept of a work-life balance
Random fact about them I like: Threatening to execute two nobles because their bickering disturbed his dinner. Funniest thing he's ever done

Your OC Tian looks like he could he my OCs brother and I'm so obsessed with him. The beauty marks and the oblivious glazed over look really fucking do it for me
can u share more about him :0c
Omg thank you so much!!!!! I designed Tian to be so extremely husband-coded To Me so I'm happy some of the boxes he checks 4 me ✅ are checked 4 u also ✅🙏🏼
Tian (and Zhu) is the protagonist of two of my projects, the original and its overgrown AU. The OG is........ A xianxia romcom bildungsroman like....... Swan-maiden myth meets FFIX meets Disney Hercules.......... And the AU is what I usually draw/upload, which is a neo noir like...... FFVIII meets........ Drive (2011)....... Meets........... Disco Elysium which is a connection I'm only making right here, right now, as I type?????? Anyway OG-style Baby T is "tiger", "spring", vs Big T who is "dragon", "winter". Both are True Neutral tho I think Baby T leans Chaotic...
Some quick blips: Cap sun, Aries moon, Taurus rising, bday is 31 Dec; 6'2 188cm, ~190lbs 86kg, benches above his bodyweight; vegetarian, doesn't drink, healthiest guy you know (chainsmoking is healthy); blue MCR-coded tobacco depression wifeguy to Zhu’s red LDR-coded cocaine mania guywife
Charm points: natural curls, beauty marks, underbite
Talents: carpentry, wushu, gymnastics, fixing whatever
Likes: Zhu, tofu, his motorcycle
Dislikes: texting, cardio, doing laundry
Songs: MCR – Drowning Lessons + Fashion Statement + Desert Song (it's bad!!!!!!), The National – Walk Off, Hyukoh – 似是故人來 Like An Old Friend Arrives
Motifs: chrysanthemums, smoke, temples, the moon
Not really a talker, he's all abt acts of service and can be hard to understand if you're looking specifically for words. I like to think of him as the lead in a Western film except the horse is a black motorbike – silhouetted against the horizon, never says more than he has to, does what needs doing. His catchphrase is basically "🆗", "Sure." Also he doesn't use guns but anything else goes 🔨
Some flavor:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
More under the cut if this hateful app will let me add one 🤪
I think he's best understood thru the way other ppl talk abt him – so here are a couple names/epithets!
His maternal grandmother is a distinguished mobster known as The Old Empress, which is why most ppl call Tian "Crown Prince", "the Prince", etc. Their family is more/less popularly-elected local deities (see "city god" on Wikipedia) and he's the last of the bloodline But has been refusing to officially inherit for over a decade, though he performs all the duties anyway. Old, old agreements put them above virtually all modern law, generally thru loopholes that allow them to, for example, literally start a gang war at 23 bc you got a little too annoyed Or take an eye for an eye/publicly execute someone as ritual vengeance. Pls note that Zhu is a criminal defense attorney. Smile
They also sometimes call him "Bodhisattva" bc he, due to Circumstances, grew up in a Buddhist monastery from age 8, along with Jin, his baby brother. He became an ordained monk at 20 but disrobed at 22 so he could help Jin thru university. During that time, he worked three primary jobs: seasonal construction worker/contractor, auto mechanic, and plumber. "why not model" No Vanities Lifestyle. He Is Just Some Guy. He Wishes He Were Still Bald. Fuck Fast Fashion Btw.
With his name specifically, Tian Tian, 田 “field” + 天 “heaven/day/sky”, is his entire character – simple, no frills, unassuming on paper, but also strong, steady, salt of the earth. It's a name that once you see him both does and doesn't do him justice, like surely there's something fancier and yet between those two characters you already have the world. The name is also 9 strokes altogether! Fav number and an auspicious one – 9 heavens + if you've ever seen an imperial dragon robe, it's 9 dragons with scales in multiples of 9, eg 81.
A few bonus reasons I chose 天:
I associate him with swans (symbol of beauty but also violent, aggressive birds), 大天鹅 Big Heaven Goose
Single-character names are so elegant/Tough to me
Canonically seen as a "Fifth Great Beauty", literally a man named Heaven, the H is for Husband TO ME
FACT I decided on the monk thing after I named him and I think it's funny. His Dharma name is 釋恒心 Shi Hengxin btw which means "monk", literally, and "resolution"
Final bonus, literally my man:

Ok live action atla reaction for episode 2.
It was better than episode one. Where episode one was a dumpster fire actively trying to hurt me both as an avatar fan and as someone with a basic understanding of how multimodal media is used to craft stories, episode two is fine.
I hesitate to call it great or even good when my only other point of reference so far is one of the worst episodes of TV I have seen in the past decade. Or possibly just ever. But I can comfortably say it was fine.
Perhaps my biggest on going issue is still the dialogue. When they don't sound like they just walked out of a LA therapists office, they instead sound like they are either in a circa 2010 disney original tv show, or just straight up like the writer explaining directly to camera how they are justifying skipping events from the animation because they have made the characters so much more mature and self aware of what they need to do/become for the sake of saving the world.
In short, Sokka remains unfunny.
I can't believe the "I bet you taste like chicken" comment wasn't even in response to Momo doing anything in particular. Momo is just there chilling on Aang's shoulder and Sokka is glaring at him like Momo is his arch rival, talking about a singular non mishmash animal that he has probably never even seen before because where the fuck where the chicken coops in the south fucking pole!?
Katara's strives in bending probably look impressive to anyone who hasn't seen the first episode of the animation where she already outclassed her current progress. Girl was out there (accidentally) splitting icebergs out of anger, but I'm meant to be impressed she can make a water ball in 3 seconds? I hate how badly she has been nerfed.
I also hate how they made it that Gram Gram actively helped nerf her by denying Katara her inheritance until it was clear she was gonna hop on a flying bison and go on adventures with the Avatar. She didn't even give her the scroll directly and apologise to her face. Just shoved it in her bags with a sorry note and now we're deprived of Katara stealing from pirates! Which means Katara is gonna be carrying that "goody toe shoes always morally correct with no room for nuance mom friend" burden for who knows how much longer now.
We did FINALLY get some Iroh adjacent behaviour from Uncle Iroh. Him trying to cajole Zuko into eating some street food and getting distracted mid sentence because he noticed some sticky rice wasn't perfectly executed but it was better executed than any other Iroh moments we have seen so far. Mostly he still hits as gaslighty and condescending. And don't get me wrong. OG Iroh COULD be gaslighty but never so fucking blatantly. There's no finesse, no gentle distractions layered with concern. Where is the charisma? Instead we effectively get him going "you're wrong. you should consider giving up." at every other time he talks to Zuko (less so this episode than last but only because he "tries" to teach Zuko diplomacy. Yes there are quotes around tries for a reason. He basically says Do This, gives no real guidance on how and then steps in to do the thing the second Zuko is sucking because he's never had to do this shit before and doesn't want to do it now especially since he has no idea wtf Iroh means).
Anyways, didn't they say they were overhauling the Ba Sing Se arc to make it less gaslighty? Yet they let this vibe fly with Iroh of all people?
We did at least get Suki though. And she's mostly pretty recognisably Suki. Save for the instant and hardcore pining for Sokka because he immediately became a surrogate for her yearning for the outside world. I can appreciate that they wanted to nix Sokka's sexism and instead just made him insecure about his status as a warrior, and they almost made it work but they cut themselves off from such an interesting interplay of tension by having Suki just as, if not more, eager to show off her skills to Sokka as he was to act like he was a big tough southern water tribe warrior. They were on to something when they had her question how he could be the guardian of his village if he was here with the Avatar instead. They could of had her be dismissive of his claims at being a warrior when he was clearly acting like an undisciplined blow hard and the fanthrowing/chokehold scene could have been a "stop acting tough, I am the warrior you're claiming to be" moment which wouldn't have involved any sexism on either side and have made a basis for mutual respect when Sokka comes along to the training hall. They could have had him humbly ASK instead of awkwardly miming until Suki noticed. We could have still had Sokka in Kyoshi Warrior garb. It would have stuck closer to the original, it wouldn't have taken up more time, and it would have created a much more satisfying interplay of tension between the two characters which also would help ground their future relationship in mutual respect.
I will say though, although the writing fucking choked the cinematography, the lighting team, the actors and the editors all came through with creating a sense of attraction between the two characters. So that wasn't nothing.
Kyoshi was a high point. Still fell victim to the dialogue writing, but a very strong perfomance by Yvonne Chapman accented excellently by the sound design team during some of the more intense parts when they layered in all the other Avatar voices. She was a good choice for giving Aang a bunch of hard truths and I liked how she both told him he had to find his own path but when he kept pushing for a more concrete answer just started telling him to deal with shit her way, because that felt very Kyoshi.
Also the entire sequence of her manifesting through Aang to show him a bit of what he could do as the avatar and lowkey to protect HER island was fucking badass. Not a single fire nation soldier left that island with clean underwear after facing Avatar mother fucking Kyoshi.
Unfortunately I was very quickly brought down from this high by Aang closing out his part of the episode by saying that Kyoshi told him something terrible was going to happen to the Northern Water Tribe if he didn't get up there and do his duty as the avatar to stop it. A conversation beat that happened off screen btw.
This annoys me for several reasons, starting with since when can the Avatar's collective past lives tell the future? The big threat to the Northern Water Tribe was originally Zhao coming to kill the moon spirit, which is a culmination of his lust for dominance and power and his plans to capture the avatar for himself. So either that isn't happening (and they are unnecessarily trying to revamp a perfectly good finale to stroke their own egos) OR they have made the nonsensical decision to foretell this tragedy in the show instead of just letting the tension mount naturally because 80+% of their audience already know shit goes down in at the Northern Water Tribe. Which annoys the fuck out of me. Aang was always going to go North for water bending training anyways, and especially this borderline hyper responsible version of Aang who knows even if it will hurt emotionally he will need to learn the other elements. There was no good god damn reason to add a second layer of urgency by saying if he doesn't get there bad shit will happen!
My closing rant is really more of a question, but why the fuck is it every time we see a firelord, (Sozin and now Ozai) that they are just hanging out in the middle of the fucking chamber chatting with some fucking guys until a prisoner/messenger arrives while the fire throne looms menacingly in the background upstairs and 50 feet back. Where is the menace and pizazz of them sitting looking down on literally everyone and everything from up on high flanked by flames, committing atrocities with a wave of their hand and a few low spoken words that everyone grovels to hear? I believe in Daniel Dae Kim's ability to look scary and lordly on a fancy chair, especially if the fancy chair has FIRE, why doesn't the director?

Lab Rats characters as colognes
Tumblr media
Donald Davenport ➡️ Angels' Share (Kilian Paris)
One of the classics. There are polarizing views regarding Donald, and while he did do some things that I didn't like either, looking back, I can honestly say that I still hold him in a positive light--which is why I chose a pretty great scent to represent him.
The main accords of woody and warm spicy, as well as the top note of cognac and middle notes of cinnamon and oak, says Donald. Like, this man would probably smell like that.
Add to that the beautiful bottle design? So rich and executive?
Yeah. Definitely Donald.
The vanilla at the base gives the cologne (perfume?) some sweetness, too. Donald can be like that. He's egotistic most of the time (let's just be honest), but he had lots of sweet moments with his wife and little ones throughout the show.
That's why I think he would be Kilian's Angels' Share.
Tasha Davenport ➡️ Baccarat Rouge 540 (Maison Francis Kurkdijian)
The king of all EDPs--matched, of course, with the queen of the castle. I don't have this scent (a 2.3 oz bottle can cost $250+ 😭), and I haven't gotten to try it through a sample spray, but I've heard it said that this has a sweetness to it, just enough.
That trait is similar to Tasha because while she can be sweet and warm, those things have a limit. She was never cloyingly sweet, never permissive and lax in disciplining Leo, but she wasn't sharp and cold to him, either (interestingly both in their universe and the parallel one). She was just perfect.
Tasha is also this perfume in that they call attention. I mean, honestly. Tasha is just gorgeous. Hot take, but I don't think there's ever been a Disney TV mom as beautiful as her.
In the same vein, there are SO many fragrances out there trying to dupe BR540. While a few had gotten close, collectors still spend money to get the original - because there's nothing quite like it.
So, yeah. Mama Davenport is definitely the Baccarat Rouge 540.
Douglas Davenport ➡️ Replica By the Fireplace (Maison Margiela)
This scent isn't for everyone, but it is for me. When you spray this on a tester or just out in the air, you will smell campfire. The smoky scent, I'm guessing, is brought about by the clove oil and the guaiac wood. I hate the smell of smoke, but what saves, and even endears, this scent to me is the vanilla note that comes and stays.
Some people had described it like smelling campfire with marshmallows being roasted over it. I used to think that, too, but the more I think about it, I just pick up a comforting sweetness that isn't necessarily marshmallow.
That represents Douglas well, I think. There had always been a bit of a wilderness feel to him, something a bit rough around the edges, you know? But, once you get to know him and once you understand the new person he's become, you realize that he's actually kind and sweet, though begrudgingly.
Adam Davenport ➡️ Spicebomb Night Vision (Viktor&Rolf)
Chose this for the very shallow reason that this is probably one of the sexiest colognes I've ever smelled in my life. It exudes strength, magnetism, comfort. It...It's just attractive.
Obviously, Adam himself is not lacking in the looks area. He's a very handsome man. But I also chose this specific flanker to represent him because of how the bottle looks. You can't really see it on the board, but the bottle both in the complete pictures and real life has a dark green "glow" at the bottom. It's just so cool.
Though Adam is very childlike, he has a lot of moments that shows a cool side to him. In particular are the several moments when he would actually stand up and protect his siblings.
That's why this cologne is for him. (Side note: Also, I really do think Adam would own this scent.)
Bree Davenport ➡️ Uomo Born in Roma Yellow Dream (Valentino)
First off, I am of the personal opinion that Valentino has the best perfumes and colognes in the designer category of the market.
Now, that said, Uomo BIR Yellow Dream is definitely one of my favorite colognes out there. It opens up bright due to the pineapple and mandarin orange notes, deepens just a little due to the spicy notes that follows, and continues sweet because of the vanilla at the base.
It matches Bree, I think, because she definitely had moments where she brought the light into an otherwise bleak situation. And once upon a time, she was one of my favorites before they turned her into the Disney stereotype of a teenaged girl. She was complex, very relatable to girls who had grown up around boys.
The scent matches her, too, due to the bottle. It's probably got one of the better designs out there. Like Bree, it's beautiful and pretty stylish.
Anyway, that's why I think she would be Uomo BIR Yellow Dream if she was a scent.
Chase Davenport ➡️ Light Blue Pour Homme (Dolce&Gabbana)
D&G's Light Blue Pour Homme is definitely one of the modern classics. It's one of your well-loved summertime scents that comes across as refreshing (because of the citrus notes) and relaxing (because of the green notes). I didn't know this 'til I looked it up, but apparently, it has incense at the base? Which now, thinking back on it, I get, because even though this is fresh and cool, there is a depth to this - a smokiness, if you will - that does draw you in.
Chase matches those descriptions well -- the original LR Chase, at least. He was a bright guy whose concern and priority in life were the safety of others, his family, and the planet. Chase had a good heart, and pre-S4, I don't think I ever remember him acting unreasonably selfish.
He was the youngest of the trio, but he had his head on straight and actually cared about things that mattered. He was refreshing.
Unfortunately, I also chose this scent for Chase because he and the perfume version of this have something in common as far as my relationship with them. Ugh, I loved Light Blue when I first came across it. I loved it when I was first gifted it!
But sadly, I've fallen out of love. I still think it's a classic, and I will continue to use it because there are times when it's the perfect scent for the occasion, but...the notes are often coming across as wrong to me.
Personally, Chase had started hitting the wrong notes, too, as the show went along and eventually transitioned to the spinoff. I'm not happy that the writers did that, because they turned him into someone I didn't like anymore.
But hey. Like I said, he still has times when he's pretty cool to me.
Leo Dooley ➡️ Sauvage (Dior)
Saved the best for last.
Y'all ready?
Okay. I know I could have chosen a niche fragrance for my baby because there is no one else quite like the L-Doo. But, I gotta match my absolute loves with each other.
So, I mentioned that V&R's Spicebomb Night Vision is one of the sexiest colognes I've ever smelled - and that still holds true! However, this cologne? Honey. He's got everything. He's sexy, he's cool, he's deep. He can hold an intelligent conversation. He's manly, but comfortable to be around.
He's a gentleman.
I'm not gonna talk too much about notes because this thing has about 1034872 different notes in the middle alone (7, to be exact, but you get the point). But, I will bring out three: bergamot from the top, lavender from the middle, and cedar from the base.
It's no doubt that Leo's full of life. He has a sunny personality (bergamot), and his humor is just off the charts. Easily one of the funniest characters in the show, if not the funniest.
He's also a constant, a stabilizing force in the show (cedar). I can honestly say that in terms of growth as a character, he didn't have much of it (Douglas takes that crown), but he was still a dynamic character that you can depend on.
He stayed true to who he is: sarcastic, sweet, caring, protective, clumsy, smooth, smart - the list goes on. And the show needed that. Needed him and Adam being constants, because everybody changed so much over the next few years, and not necessarily in good ways.
Finally, lavender, for the simple reason that who he was during the course of the show, the stability he offered as a character, gave me comfort. He's forever going to be one of my TV babies :)
Anyway, before this turns into a full blown essay, Leo is Dior's Sauvage just for being the best.
Okay. Mighty Med's next!

Micro-Reviews: Stuff I enjoyed with my Apple+ free trial, Part II
youtube
Best Foot Forward
Scripted show about a kid with a prosthetic leg making the transition from homeschool to public school. It’s based on paralympian Josh Sundquist’s early life (who executive produced the series, and plays a minor role by appearing as the character’s prosthetist), and features a mix of school and interpersonal plot points that go beyond the main character and his friends to include his family--parents trying to be supportive while missing their children, siblings struggling with their own identities while seeing that their older brother always captures attention because of his disability.
Although the main characters are middle schoolers (and it’s appropriate for all ages), it doesn’t go for the high-octane freneticism of a Disney Channel sitcom, leaving room for quiet moments.
(Note: you may recognize Sundquist from his frequently-viral clips of humorous bits of speeches when he talks about things relating to his leg, or perhaps his impressive Halloween costumes that incorporate his missing limb.)

Ted Lasso
What I thought it was: a cringe-inducing show about an American who goes to coach soccer in the UK, knowing nothing about soccer or the UK, and derives humor from the “ugly American” character.
And then my parents recommended it to all their kids, which is a rare event, so I decided I’d give it a try, and I’m glad it did. The basic premise is indeed that an American gets hired to coach soccer in the Premier League (the top English soccer league, like MLS in America), but it’s more interesting and nuanced than a “loud-mouthed American idiot shows up to be rude and ignorant” like I expected.
The titular Ted Lasso was a successful American college football coach before the owner of the English soccer team brought him over--her secret plan is to get back at her ex-husband (the former team owner) by sabotaging the only thing he cares about: the soccer team. And what better way than to get an outsider who knows nothing to coach the team into ruin?
The problem with this plan turns out to be that Ted, despite his lack of soccer knowledge, is a really good people coach. His folksy demeanor belies a good amount of interpersonal and emotional intelligence that, combined with his humor and optimism, make him a lot harder to hate than expected.
I only had a chance to watch the 1st season of the current 2 (a third and presumably final season is currently in production as of this writing in late 2022), but once the third comes out I’m happy to pay for a month’s subscription so I can finish the series.

Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock
Fraggle Rock hits this weird nostalgia note for me because I only ever saw occasional reruns of the original growing up--I couldn’t tell you if I’d ever actually seen a full episode. My knowledge was that Fraggles are muppet-puppets who live underground, and that’s it. But I know the theme song, and it’s so frikkin catchy. So I literally turned this on just to hear the theme song. *clap clap*
It’s silly--this is a kids’ show--and musical, with each episode having characters ~learn something~, like about communication with friends, no making assumptions, being brave, whatever. But it’s entertaining (and good for a show on in the background that I didn’t need to pay full attention to), and again: great theme song.

Floridope :: [The Daily Don]
* * * * * LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN
May 18, 2023
HEATHER COX RICHARDSON
MAY 18, 2023
Citing “changing business conditions,” Disney leadership today canceled plans to build an office complex near Orlando, Florida. The construction was estimated to cost about $1 billion, and the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity projected it would bring to Florida more than 2,000 jobs with an average salary of $120,000. In his email to employees, Disney’s theme park and consumer products chair Josh D’Amaro made it clear that even more was on the line. He noted that Disney has planned more than $17 billion of construction in Florida, bringing about 13,000 jobs, over the next ten years but suggested that, too, was being reexamined. “I hope we’re able to,” he said. Disney is locked in a battle with Florida governor Ron DeSantis that began when, under pressure from employees, then–Disney chief executive officer Bob Chapek spoke out against Florida’s Parental Rights in Education Act. This law, dubbed the “Don’t Say Gay” law because its vague language prohibiting instruction on gender identity and sexual orientation seems designed to silence any acknowledgement of LGBTQ Americans in grades K–3, was DeSantis’s pet project. In retaliation, DeSantis led Florida Republicans to strip Disney of its ability to govern itself as if it were a county—as it has done since its inception in 1967—putting the board that controlled Disney under the control of a team hand-picked by DeSantis. But before the new board took over, the old board quietly and legally handed control of the parks over to Disney. Apparently furious, DeSantis suggested he would build a competing state park or a prison next to Disney’s Florida theme park. In April, the new board set out to claw power from Disney, while the company announced it will hold its first gay-themed pride event in California and that it will build an affordable housing development in its Florida district, a move that Floridians will like. Meanwhile, with DeSantis’s blessing, the Florida state board of education approved expanding the ban on classroom mention of LGBTQ people to include grades 4–12. On April 26, Disney sued the governor and those of his top advisors behind the attacks on Disney. The lawsuit noted that for more than 50 years, Disney “has made an immeasurable impact on Florida and its economy, establishing Central Florida as a top global tourist destination and attracting tens of millions of visitors to the State each year.” But, it said, “[a] targeted campaign of government retaliation—orchestrated at every step by Governor DeSantis as punishment for Disney’s protected speech— now threatens Disney’s business operations, jeopardizes its economic future in the region, and violates its constitutional rights.” The lawsuit called out DeSantis’s actions as “patently retaliatory, patently anti-business, and patently unconstitutional. But,” it said, “the Governor and his allies have made it clear they do not care and will not stop.” The company said it felt forced to sue for protection “from a relentless campaign to weaponize government power against Disney in retaliation for expressing a political viewpoint unpopular with certain State officials.” The fight between DeSantis and Disney illustrates the dramatic ideological change in the Republican Party in the last two years. No longer committed to keeping the government weak to stay out of the way of business development, the party is now committed to creating a strong government that enforces Christian nationalism. This is a major and crucially important political shift. From the earliest days of the Reagan Revolution, those leaders who wanted to slash the federal government to end business regulation and cut the social safety net recognized that they did not have the votes to put their program in place. To find those votes, they courted racists and traditionalists who hated the federal government’s protection of civil rights. Over time, that base became more and more powerful until Trump openly embraced it in August 2017, when he said there were “very fine people on both sides.” As he moved toward the techniques of authoritarians, his followers began to champion the system that Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orbán called “illiberal democracy” or “Christian democracy” in his own country. Orbán argued that the principle of equality in liberal democracy undermines countries by attacking the national culture. Instead, he called for an end to multiculturalism—including immigration—and any lifestyle that is not based on the “Christian family model.” He seized control of universities to make them preach his values. Today’s Republican leaders openly admire Orbán and appear to see themselves as the vanguard of a “post-liberal order.” They believe that the central tenets of democracy—free speech, religious liberty, academic freedom, equality before the law, and the ability of corporations to make decisions based on markets rather than religious values—have destroyed national virtue. Such a loss must be combated by a strong government that enforces religious values. Right-wing thinkers have observed with approval that DeSantis’s Florida is “our American Hungary.” Indeed, DeSantis’s “Don’t Say Gay” law appears to have been modeled on Orbán’s attacks on LGBTQ rights, which he has called a danger to “Western civilization.” DeSantis’s attack on the New College of Florida, turning a bastion of liberal thought into a right-wing beachhead, imitated Orbán’s attack on Hungary’s universities; on Monday, DeSantis signed three more bills that undermine the academic freedom of all the state universities in Florida by restricting what subjects can be taught and by weakening faculty rights. DeSantis’s attack on Disney is yet another attack on the tenets of liberal democracy. He is challenging the idea that Disney leaders can base business decisions on markets rather than religion and exercise free speech. There is another aspect of the Republicans’ turn against democracy in the news today. If democracy is a threat to their version of the nation, it follows that any institution that supports democracy should be destroyed. Today, the House Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government, led by Representative Jim Jordan (R-OH), continued its attack on the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Ranking member Representative Stacey Plaskett (D-VI) pointed out that Jordan was violating committee rules by refusing to let Democrats on the committee see the transcripts he claims to have from a whistleblower. Other committee members noted that two of the witnesses have been paid by Trump loyalist Kash Patel. Plaskett warned: “The rules don’t apply when it comes to the Republicans.... It’s all part and parcel of the Republicans’ attempt to make Americans distrust our rule of law so that when 2024 comes around and should their candidate not win, more and more people will not believe the truth. The truth matters.” And so does power. Although House Republicans are trying to protect Representative George Santos (R-NY), who was just indicted on 13 counts, by sending his case to the Republican-dominated Ethics Committee rather than allowing a vote on whether to expel him, Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) introduced articles of impeachment against President Biden. Also today, the far-right House Freedom Caucus has called for an end to any discussions of raising the debt ceiling until the Senate passes its bill calling for extreme budget cuts. Forcing the nation into default will cause a global economic panic and, asked if they should compromise with the White House, Representative Bob Good (R-VA) said: “Why would we? We have a winning hand.”

My opinion on why Owl House S3 was shortened
I know that whole statement about Gary Marsh talking about the “brand” is out there, but I feel like there’s more to it than just that (and no, it doesn’t have to do with any content in the show)
I’m not saying it’s the right decision but I have an idea, just business wise, on how the executives saw it.
I’ve followed Disney Channel for a long time, and one formula the Channel and Disney as a company does is “If something goes right, do it again. If it doesn’t, don’t risk doing it again.”
Owl House can be very compared to Star vs. The Forces of Evil. Star was renewed for a fourth season before the 3rd had even started...just for the popularity and viewership to drop right after the multi-part S3 premiere
Now these same executives see another popular magical girl show, and then decide it’s decide it’s better to end on a high note with multi-part specials then risk it having a fate like Star
The reason this came to mind is because I just think it’s very coincidental for Star vs. to peak and fall with a mult-part special (taking up 3 episodes) in S3, and The Owl House to end with a 3 multi-length specials S3
And I hate to say it, but a part of me believes that the criticism that Amphibia S3A (aka exactly what Owl House fans are upset about missing out on) sort of proves them right in a way... All it does it tells Disney that  broadcasted serialized animated shows fall off in S3.
Also just a reminder that Gary Marsh got another job and is no longer in charge of Disney TV Animation anymore - is now Ayo Davis

Note: While I have chosen to keep this person’s identity anonymous, I ask that you please don’t contact or harass anybody on social media about this.
It really is disappointing finding out first hand that a person who worked on something that you admire turns out to be completely tone deaf when it comes to a certain issue.
I had recently got a chance to interview a big name actor on my podcast.
Now I know that everybody is different, so I didn’t expect to hit it off right from the get go. And I admit that I do struggle sometimes when it comes to conversations because I’m pretty socially awkward. So the first couple of minutes were pretty rough as they kept hammering in the same point over and over again when it came to each question I asked.
After about twenty minutes or so I started panicking because I couldn’t stop thinking of how terrible things were going, so I immediately try to salvage the episode by bringing up The Owl House because they had worked on that show. And we ended up talking about Owl House for a bit, then it all went to shit.
They brought up how grateful they were that they were able to work on an inclusive show when it came to gender identities and representation, but they never once mentioned Dana Terrace or any of her crew. It was all “Disney’s so great for having such an inclusive show, Disney has come a long way and Disney is the first company to have a same sex kiss in an animated movie” etc.
It was blatant Disney shilling, which I personally felt insulted by because it completely undermines all the hard work and love that Dana and her crew had put into the show. And let’s not forget the “Not part of our brand” excuse Disney gave when they shit canned the series halfway through production.
The Owl House is Dana Terrace’s creation, it wasn’t created by a soulless Disney executive and it sure as shit wasn’t created by Bob Chapek.
Do I regret not saying anything during the recording? Absolutely, but I wanted to stay professional. And getting mad at actors for decisions that are beyond their control is always stupid.
But that still doesn’t change the fact that simping for Disney especially after they were caught supporting Florida’s “Don’t say gay” bill is pretty tone deaf and only ends up making you look like a complete idiot.
Again, while I have kept this person’s identity anonymous. Please don’t try to  dox them. Do not harass any of the other actors or crew members on social media. Do not DM me asking about their identity because I will automatically block you.
I’m not trying to “cancel” this person, I’m just sharing my experience because I hate it when people put soulless corporations up on pedestals for doing the bare minimum when it comes to fighting for LGBTQ rights.
Support LGBTQ creators during Pride.
Support black creators on Juneteenth.
Fuck corporations and fuck rainbow capitalism.

"Elon Musk & Marilyn Manson Problems: What I Think" Speaks, May 21, 2022
(Summary)
Says he wants to talk about the Marilyn Manson and Elon Musk situations. Text on screen says he refuses to boycott canceled celebs because who knows what's true. He says and every male celebrity who apparently turned out to be a " C R E E P". He says Youtubers aren't immune to it, he's gone through things. SNL actors have gone through things, athletes, etc. Anyone who is well known or is perceived to have money are targets.
He shows a clip of Marilyn Manson. He says in some instances some of these things might be true, but you can't trust the media because they are paid to get your attention.
He asks why do we say the punishment for these people should be greater than their crime? And most people don't believe in rehabilitation. He says not everyone is like that. He says he sees a lot of you in the comments who are really intelligent and it's inspiring. The loudest people think we should treat people in an execute or non-execute way. He says you would treat someone who took candy from a baby the same way you'd treat Jeffrey Dahmer. That's how internet logic works. Text on screen says he's seen people show the same hate to people with opinion as they would serial killers.
Why do you think the canceled celebrities aren't human and deserve social execution? That's not the behavior of just people. It's hypocritical. You're acting like you're a good person, but you act like they are no longer human. A lot of the people aren't proven to have actually done anything.
Sometimes people lie, especially about people who have money and fame. Someone lying is the most obvious outcome, but people like the Disney villain conclusion.
Greg says if Elon said he would buy him a horse if he'd give him a tugger, to him (Greg) going through that would be worth a $50 tip and an apology. If he apologized and gave him $50 would be fine with him because they are both adults. Other people think he should be dragged out to the street and shot.
Our society doesn't have balance. When we see someone do one thing, we think we should ruin their life and take everything they have. Text on screen says "a ruined life = death. so unless he ended a life don't end his."
He says for Marilyn Manson and Elon Musk, whatever they admitted to doing, appropriate measures should be taken.
He says if someone grabbed someone's butt, the same should be done to them so they understand it. Additionally there should be a fine. It would be an appropriate penalty.
"Break Ups, Death & Social Failure" Speaks, May 22, 2022
(This one is boring so I decided against writing a summary. He's just trying to give life advise. At the end he does mention he received "diagnoses", as in multiple. Idk what he means by that but I thought it was worth noting.)

My thoughts on the new MH dolls
So, my thoughts on the new dolls.
I don’t hate them. They’re not my favorite. They don’t really feel like Monster High. But they’re cute.
I do have to agree that they feel a bit Disney-fied. Like, the originals were pretty edgy and had severe enough cheekbones that they had to be changed temporarily (specifically talking abt Spectra here.) These new dolls kinda seem (to me) like a lot of other dolls out there, just with vaguely monster features - save for Lagoona, who actually does remind me of the original design features.
That being said, they’re still good dolls. Maybe nothing as standout as from when I was a kid, but they’re not ugly. I don’t hate them. I’m actually considering buying a couple of them when they come out, mainly Lagoona and maybe Draculaura. I think they’ll go over well with kids and maybe some collectors. They probably wont end up flopping like Gen 2 did.
I guess I can talk about them one by one here.
Tumblr media
Clawdeen
Okay, where are her glasses? Like, if she wears them, her doll should have them. Maybe they’re just not shown in the leaked promo images, but I’m actually gonna riot if they didn’t give her doll glasses for aesthetic purposes.
This said, I’m so glad she turned out better than the prototype. This outfit actually looks like a Clawdeen outfit modernized. I like her hair a lot, and honestly, I wish I could find that outfit in my size. Her nose is a really cute detail.
Tumblr media
Lagoona
I already kinda talked about her, but she’s my favorite out of all of these dolls. Mostly because she reminds me very much of the og MH. Those clear legs are incredible, and her hair is so cute. Her outfit is alright, not my favorite but that’s personal taste. I do love her little bag, though.
Tumblr media
Frankie
They are not my favorite, to be perfectly honest. I love their prosthetic leg with the little doodles, and their shoes are adorable. I’m not so much a fan of their main outfit or hair, but again, personal thing. I love the eyebrow slit, though.
Tumblr media
Draculaura
Not my favorite, not my least favorite. The stockings and hair are cute, and the bangs are kinda growing on me a little. I’m not a fan of her outfit; I feel like it’s a bit basic. The bow is cute, though. I’m also still not much of a fan of the split dye versus the streaks thing.
Tumblr media
Cleo
Idk, I just don’t like her design as much. With all the blue in all her outfits they’ve shown, she’s sort of looking more like she’s wearing Nefera’s old clothes. I like that they kept the bandages in the design, but I don’t like how they turned out looking like looses sleeves rather than something she’s actually wrapped in. I do like the style of the dress she’s wearing, though. I can’t really see the headband well, but it actually goes okay with the rest of the outfit. Idk, I like the idea but I think the actual execution of it is a bit rocky.
Overall
Overall, I actually like that they have slightly more realistic proportions. Like, they aren’t super duper thin and overly unrealistic. I still miss certain things (like the high angled cheekbones and whatnot), but it’s nice to see that. They do give off that more cutesy vibe, but if that’s the new direction with this version of the canon, then so be it. They may not be the most Monster High as we know it dolls out there, but like I said earlier, they’ll probably do okay with kids, and that’s where this Gen has been aimed (side note: and we’re possibly getting one for the older fans, I found out today, so there’s that!) Overall, not my favorite MH dolls Mattel has put out, but they’re cute.

my formatting actually survived this one wtf
Happy new year, if there's anyone who actually reads these! It's, uh... been a while. School started back up for me in August and I got really busy, and also I got really into tabletop actual plays and got a little bit distracted, lol. Real talk, I started watching this back in January but then school started AGAIN after I'd finished the songs and then I procrastinated on watching the voting sequence for uhhh literally two months lol
Cyprus Overall this isn't a bad start? The verses seem to be too low for the main singer and I would have liked to hear some more harmonies or for the other singers to have parts. I think it's catchy, though, I especially like it after the key change.
United Kingdom Jessica definitely has a great voice, and I appreciated how simple the staging was here. Unfortunately, I really REALLY hate the part of the chorus where she sings "come back" and then the entire track stops. Maybe it's because that's the part that's always in the recap videos, but it really gets on my nerves and honestly brings down the entire song for me.
Austria I love the energy on this one, both in the song and in the performance! It's not the, like, most artfully composed song by all means but I really enjoy the instrumental and I think Manuel really brings a lot to the song. He's not the most technically perfect singer but he's performing really well, just having a great time, you can tell he's happy to be doing what he's doing and that makes what would otherwise be a mediocre song really appealing to me.
Greece The actual song sounds nice but the vocals on this are just bad. I could be persuaded to like this if they, like, had a different singer and replaced the "sagapo S A G A P O" line with something else because that also sounds dumb. I think the staging looks kinda cool and I could get behind the outfits, even, but the vocals here just suck.
Spain This is a fun one. Rosa has a really lovely voice and I almost wish they'd sent her with a more serious song to show that off a little more, but as is this is still pretty good and I like it a lot. My only real issue with it is that weird things keep happening with the key? I don't know enough music theory to be certain if this is the right word but it keeps modulating weird and going in funny places melodically.
Croatia This singer has a really nice tone when she belts, the song is okay, and she looks great in that outfit. Unfortunately, it looks like she doesn't know what to do with herself when she's not singing. They have her walking around the stage and being tryhard sexy and it just isn't working for me. I could also really do without the backing singers.
Russia My thoughts on this are really similar to my thoughts on Cyprus' entry. Idk, it's alright, the vocals suck, I like the chord progression in the chorus I guess?
Estonia I think this is really cute, really fun. I like the guitar and I'm really impressed by Sahlene's high notes at the end. My main problem here is that Sahlene's stage presence is almost too energetic or too sweet.
Macedonia The song is incredibly forgettable. Like I was listening to it and thought to myself, wow, I really am not going to be able to remember the melody at all. I also think Karolina was holding back vocally a LOT, especially at the beginning. Her dresses were nice and I think the staging was overall not bad.
Israel Sarit's voice works really well with the song here, and the backup singers blend well with her. Like I said about Austria, the right performer can really elevate an otherwise unassuming song. The build to the chorus is really good, probably the best part of the song.
Switzerland Not a bad song, reminds me kinda of Disney Fairies almost? Which isn't a bad thing, I was a Disney Fairies kid. But it fails to hold my attention, even though the vocals are good.
Sweden This is some of the best staging of the night IMO. I love a well-executed dance routine. Their voices are also a really nice contrast to the singers before them which really helps the song stand out!
Finland Considering this is a disco song performed in the 2000s, it's a pretty catchy and well-polished number. Definitely one of my favorites of the night.
Denmark This is actually pretty good. Malene doesn't seem very sure of herself onstage, both physically and vocally, but beyond that I actually really vibe with this. It's not a huge standout stylistically so I guess I understand why it placed last but in my opinion it's way better than a number of these other songs.
Bosnia & Herzegovina I love the style of the song! It gives me 50s-60s vibes even though that might not necessarily be right. It's nice and upbeat and I think Maja's voice suits the song very well. The staging was kind of weird though, everyone was weirdly spaced out onstage.
Belgium I don't dislike this necessarily, but it is really repetitive, and I just kind of get bad vibes from Sergio. Nothing more to say here.
France In terms of vocals and the melody line this song is probably the best. I'm a fan of more upbeat songs generally, unless they really hit emotionally, so this slower song isn't really my thing. But Sandrine's voice is really just stellar.
Germany Whoa. I hate this. Corinna's voice is alright and she's on key and everything but I just hate her tone, it's weird and nasal and vibrate-y. The ending is really abrupt and makes no sense, and it looks like the backing singers weren't given enough instruction on how to move, they kept doing different things and weren't at all in sync with each other and it was just a bad look.
Turkey Overall not bad. I'm not a huge fan of the traditional Turkish style of singing, it's too far back in the throat for my taste, so this one doesn't vibe with me. The English lyrics are also especially clumsy here. But there's nothing glaringly bad about this song.
Malta The appeal of this is mostly in seeing little baby Ira Losco. I super enjoyed her 2016 entry and ngl I'm a little let down by this? It just feels empty, there isn't that much going on and while simplicity is great for some Eurovision songs it just doesn't work here.
Romania I've found one of my least favorites, I think. The singers blend well together and that's about the only good thing I have to say for this song.
Slovenia This is nice. Idk, it's nice to see a drag queen in early-aughts ESC that isn't being played for a joke, you know? Like Conchita was taken seriously in 2014 but before that... nah. So this is nice to see. I also appreciated the female backing singers in their sailor suits. Good vibes all around.
Latvia Sooooo visually appealing! Not just because of the quickchanges or because Marie N is hot (although her in the white suit and little hat is INCREDIBLY gender), but just the overall staging and choreography was great here. I'm not a huge fan of the song or the vocals but Marie is just such a performer that I can totally get why this won.
Lithuania Uncertain what Lithuania was aiming for here. It's certainly wholesome. But there isn't much more I can say about it without being plainly mean about this guy's vocal abilities.
My top 24

Thoughts after watching I really had a hard time with this one, as evidenced by my having NO comments about the hosting and literally taking months to watch the votes. I don't know if it was just the audio quality or the hosts or whatever but I do think that part of it was that I had the misfortune to watch it with Terry Wogan commentary. God I hate him.
Who knows when you'll get 2001 from me (if anyone even reads these!) but idk. Eventually. There may also be a 2021 review. [shrug]

"The Powerpuff Girls (2013 reboot)" review/rant
(NOTE: Don't read this post if you like the reboot of "The Powerpuff Girls" and find it a guilty pleasure. Even if you just like Steven Universe alone. I can try to respect your opinions. You're still welcome to read the post if you're just curious about the other half of this post.)
On this day, five years after original series ended with "The Powerpuff Girls Rule!", "The Powerpuff Girls" got a reboot for better or worse. Even though we ended up getting "Dance Pantsed" in 2014, this reboot completely changed "The Powerpuff Girls" and not in a good way. The reboot was developed by Rebecca Sugar, who previously worked on "Adventure Time". It's surprising how a show with mixed results wound up becoming successful. Some people like it because of its LGBT representation and other themes "The Powerpuff Girls" never did before. Then there's those like me who hate the show for those reasons. I'm not saying LGBT representation is a bad idea, but to me, it just doesn't work with anything (that is, except "The Loud House", which is understandable, since that show wasn't aimed for children.).
BAD THINGS
Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup were redesigned to look like attractive adult women. They now have fingers and toes, which the original versions of the characters never had. And if that wasn't enough, the original voice talents were replaced with Estelle as Blossom, Michaela Dietz as Bubbles, and Deedee Mango-Hall as Buttercup. To me, they're supposed to be kids made from a lab accident Professor Utonium caused, unless maybe there's a better explanation in terms of how the Powerpuff Girls aged up, but I digress.
This reboot also introduces a new character, Steven Universe, voiced by Zach Callison (who also voiced Prince James in the Playhouse Disney show, "Sofia the First".). This character as a ruby in his bellybutton and he seems to have super powers like fusing with the main characters or even other extraterrestrial beings. Now, adding a new character into the franchise isn't a bad idea, as long as there's a reasonable explanation. To me, it's annoying to see Steven get more of the spotlight than The Powerpuff Girls. I thought he was just a terrible addition to the franchise.
This show also has characters singing a lot, which has actually happened before in the original series (ex. The infamous special, "See Me, Feel Me, Gnomey"), but this was scarce. I'm not even planning to listen to those songs from the reboot at all, but I suppose you could be the judge on if they're good or bad. The original opening and closing themes from the original show don't show up either. All I can say is that I'm okay with the idea of having the characters singing something, but it shouldn't be frequently. This is a superhero cartoon, not a musical cartoon (even though Disney Channel's "Hamster & Gretel" did a better job combining those two genres years later).
You don't even get to hear the narrator in this show, nor is there any narration, which was one of the reasons why the original show is far more superior.
There's also the theatrical film, "Steven Universe: A Powerpuff Girls Movie", but that's an entirely different review for another day.
GOOD THINGS
There's not really a lot of good things that came from this reboot that I could think of, but I guess one positive is that when "The Powerpuff Girls (2013)" made its way into "Lego Dimensions", they decided to combine elements from both "Powerpuff Girls" shows. And while Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup sound a bit off, they at least went back to their original designs from the original show (despite Amanda Leighton voicing Blossom, Kristen Li voicing Bubbles, and Natalie Palamides voicing Buttercup). I guess another good thing is that at least Steven Universe is nowhere to be seen in "Lego Dimensions", depending on whether you like him or not.
CONCLUSION
Rebooting "The Powerpuff Girls" isn't a bad idea on paper, but its execution was a mixed bag. If you think it's okay in its own right, I can respect your opinion. Same thing for those who only watch the reboot for Steven Universe. To me, there's so much more they could've done to make this reboot better. What they should've done is maybe have old "Powerpuff Girls" characters return, as well as their original voice talents. I also would've preferred if this show never had LGBT representation, unless the original creator, Craig McCracken would allow it. Whatever you do, don't waste your time with this show. Watch the original show instead, and maybe "Dance Pantsed", which is fortunately a stand-alone special that has no ties with the reboot at all. If I had to rate this between “Good”, “Bad”, or “Mediocre”, I would have to give this show “Bad”.
Do you too hate "The Powerpuff Girls (2013)", even to this day? Or do you have a different opinion on it? Tell me your thoughts in the comments section and remember to click the heart or reblog this post.

spider-man two, thoughts (spoilers below).
Tumblr media
this is literally just spit-balling
harry as venom isn't a plot i hate. the way insomniac likes to craft their stories primarily around the emotional baggage of established relationships that peter (and miles) has. fighting for and against your terminally ill best friend with pretty bleak execution results is far more interesting to me than fighting a character who's no more than a missable footnote in the original game. harry as venom isn't something i'm gunning for in the comics but it works for insomniac.
i'm so glad that insomniac really leaned into peter and mj's dynamic and it was nice to see her as more than just the doting girlfriend.
i mean, darin de paul is just a national treasure. in what world does the man that plays ardyn izunia play triple-j.
speaking of final fantasy xv, king regis you bitch! how dare you stab peter. i cannot believe we have two caelum's in one spider-man game.
i'm so happy they integrated hailey into the main supporting cast (also playable?!) but when did she find out about miles?
mj i get, but i feel peter moved on far too quickly from the fact he nearly killed his girlfriend. and on that note, literally just stands and watches the scream transformation. i know they're trying to keep it together considering peter's experience with the symbiote but like, i would've been pissed at harry.
rio and miles dancing at the gala was the most adorable thing. (especially as someone who grew up with a single-mum).
they literally don't explain how venom gets his name
"show them your manhood!" / "yes sir - wait, what?!"
young peter's look just confirms disney / marvel wanted the face change to represent the mcu because that is literally tom holland's face.
i actually didn't think yuri's performance could get any better, it did especially once peter has the symbiote off.
the music during the venom fight with peter at midtown is incredible.
i obviously knew he wasn't going to die but i legit cried when pete got stabbed.
i understand insomniac really want you to use the symbiote suit but peter's lower-level unlocked suits are low-key hot garbage. even as someone who doesn't mind the militarized, tech suits the choices were so mid. i didn't get the suit i really wanted until after i bet the story. i ended up using the raimi suit which i never used in the original game as i don't like that suit but it was the only normal looking suit that wasn't native to insomniac as i don't like their peter suits.
miles' were better but a lot of them seemed to blend together. his endgame suit is actually my favourite (but with the red, purple and blue ombre lining - which i'm annoyed i couldn't even use the swatch in the finale).
had quite a handful of restarts and crashes in 23hrs play-time.
kinda wish we could've seen young!mj with peter and harry.
miles telling harry that he doesn't care if he's peter's best friend, he's still going to kick his ass was great.
i feel like the plot beats for this game overall were kinda predictable in that kraven was the early game bad guy, pete gets the symbiote suit from harry, harry takes it back and becomes venom all with the end result of norman being pissed at spider-man(s) for harry's probably bad outcome. that said, i genuinely have no guesses for structure of the next one and i doubt they're going to make harry a 'villain' again.
i don't think they'll use carnage in dlc, especially when yuri said it might take "years" to track him down, but i also don't know if he'll be enough for the finale as it might - at least gameplay and conceptually - feel like a venom rehash.
this just me on a tangent so feel free to skip. based on what i said, as someone not super familiar with carnage outside of specific media, the problem i have with him in relation to venom is the same problem i have with 'the batman who laughs' it makes the former feel less threating in direct comparison (which will happen when you cut to carnage after immediately having venom as a main antagonist one game prior), especially when venom is brock rather than peter as the host, because there's internal conflict with peter (which can be argued with tbwl's to some extent). carnage, in basic terms is bat-shit venom with zero redeeming qualities and i worry that for a medium like this he will feel derivative. the joker and the venom shouldn't feel less dangerous, especially now that it feels like venom has taken on anti-hero and carnage has become what venom was. like what happened in cruella. disney tried to make cruella likable, so emma stone basically played 'disney: harley quinn' and emma thompson played cruella.
this is oddly specific but i feel laura bailey is like the only woman in gaming that goes for the scream. and i always watch these games (cyberpunk in particular) and i'm like "girl scream, let out that guttural scream because i know that's exactly what's i'd be doing in that situation because this shit is terrifying." the only other time i've properly seen it done was also by laura bailey when she played fetch.
i actually don't know if we'll get another in-between game because i feel like the "play as miles'" itch has been scratched. meaning there's no need to fill that void as until his spin-off we couldn't play as him, now we can.
but if we do, could potentially see a silk, miles team-up to take down carnage.
mj's stealth missions are terrifying. her section under the tunnel with peter should’ve been longer
gutted there's no ng+ yet.
my bisexual queen is thriving.
getting the spider-bots was really the only fun thing to collect.
we’ll probably see gwen in the next game.
the sheer amount of detail on felicia's face
i can’t not hear wally in any of jason spisak’s roles.
“i don’t know what it is, but i just love this spider-bot.” - peter (about the spider-girl spider-bot)
vulture, electro and shocker really didn’t need to be killed completely off-screen. but i feel like they might’ve lost their rating if they weren’t. it’s just a bit strange that nobody noticed, especially pete that multiple high-profile raft inmates went missing?
people are being weird as fuck about cindy and peter. the girl is clearly a minor.
i booted up the first game to replay it, yeah. i still don’t like peter’s new face.
felt like there was half an act missing. could’ve done with one more agent venom mission, perhaps they can’t save vulture or electro. kinda felt like they needed a ‘he really is taking them out one by one.’
could’ve done with venom’s arc being a little longer.
miles’ arc was incredible and i loved watching him team-up with mj.
the black suit with the blue and red highlights from the nineties cartoon?!
speaking of, mj’s outfit during the zoo mission is also a call back
reed richards is defo getting a cameo in the next game and maybe tony on a phone call. i’d also love a nudge-nudge side-quest for deadpool.
i know it’s an emotional scene but i spat out my drink when i saw they changed the pic of harry from the old game to his new design in peter’s garage.
“i think we should get them” the line delivery on that is immaculate, like thank you captain obvious.
i’ve had a bit to linger on this but, there’s a bit of a disconnect between harry wanting the suit and getting it back. i think there had to be just a bit more push with peter specifically. i get he’s a nice guy but we needed to see a bit more passive aggressive harry brewing in the desperation for the symbiote.
watching a playthrough i realised venom got his name from oscorp / dr. connors as there’s a container with the name “vnm” when peter turns connors human again.
i don't want a venom spin-off and it feels like the only people who do want it is to take venom for an hour's joy-ride (until the gimmick wears off) or eddie brock stans that feel jilted by insomniac. i'd much rather get straight to the finale because i don't want to have to buy a playstation six just because some randomers want an eddie simulator first.
chameleon is absolutely going to be dlc.
how did mj get her motorbike back from the tunnel?
predictions for the next game:
electro isn't dead, primarily due to the fact that max may have became pure energy to escape kraven.
cindy, miles and black cat team-up mission.
may is hinted at towards the end of the game.
madame webb is getting something.
if carnage is in the third game and not two's dlc, he'll be the opening act villain (pseudo-kraven).
they'll tease hobgoblin - harry or not. (i could genuinely see harry becoming hobgoblin to help take down otto and green goblin, if it's norman).
peter might die, but i doubt it.
if harry dies, it'll be half-way through the game. i will actually kill myself tho.
i low-key want spot to be in the game or dlc but i don't think they'll do that purely because of spider-verse but you can tell a lot of insomniac grew-up on the nineties show, so it might be a possibility. (most of my knowledge for spider lore exists in that show and the various film franchises because the only spider comics i own is one 'noir' trade and a handful of 'the superior foes of spider-man'.)
i mean, they also could have miles go after spot, which could be fun.
HOLY FUCK! WAIT! HARRY AS GREEN GOBLIN COULD BE AN HOMAGE ARC TO MARY JANE IN LIMBO BUT EVEN MORE ANGSTY CAUSE THAT SERUM IS DEFO GONNA MAKE HARRY PSYCHO - I ACTUALLY NEED TO SEE IT BECAUSE THAT EPISODE IS LITERALLY ONE OF MY CORE MEMORIES.
the delivery of “i think we should get him” is immaculate
someone mentioned this on tvtropes, but stark industries bankrolling f.e.a.s.t is not a bad idea.
fisk will probably be back in side mission capacity or dlc.
