Chenford + Tim sees Lucy on a date and turns up at her door.
Lucy doesn't expect Tim to be sitting outside her door when she gets home.
She's not upset about it, exactly, but she doesn't expect it either.
He doesn't notice her right away, so she gives herself a moment to take him in – if she's dealing with a certain type of Tim, she wants to know ahead of time.
He's wearing a pair of jeans with a rip at the cuff that she knows is from getting snagged on a chain-link fence when they'd been walking back to their hotel after a night out in San Antonio, Tim running ahead and trying to rile her up and make her feel better after fucking up in the preliminaries.
For the record: she'd made it through, but by the skin of her teeth after bombing her second-to-last obstacle.
Tim's head is tipped back against the wall, his eyes closed, and the sharp line of his jaw tracing down to the tension in his neck makes Lucy frown.
He looks upset, which she doesn't love.
"Hey," she calls out as she makes her way down the hall, and Tim snaps his head up, raising his brows. "You looking for somebody?"
He offers up a smile and she can feel the relief in it. "Hey," he hops up to his feet, his limbs long, working quickly. "No, no way," he frowns, fake, not reaching his eyes which are still very much smiling back at her. "Just happened to be in the area."
"And, what," she pulls her phone from her back pocket, waving it around as she reaches him, "you couldn't call and see if I was around before I dropped in?"
"I," he scratches at the back of his neck and she squints up at him. "I mean, I figured-,"
"Why are you nervous right now?" Lucy laughs, shoving at his arm before digging through her bag for her keys. Tim mumbles something unintelligible and she unlocks her door, pushing it open and leaning against the frame to block him from following her in. "What's up?"
Tim slides his hands into his pockets, shrugging. "Nothing, nothing," he taps her shin with his foot. "What were you up to?"
"Oh," she waves her hand, "nothing. I mean, you saw me this morning, but after," she shrugs, "I ran errands, I went on a bad date, I grabbed a bottle of wine," she tugs the wine bottle from the top of her bag so he can see it. "You've just...been waiting for me?"
"I only got here," he squints around, then glances down at his watch, "half hour ago, or so. Figured you'd turn up at some point."
"Oh, what," she raises her brows, smirking up at him, "you don't think I'm capable of staying out all night, Tim?"
He snorts, rolling his eyes. "You have training at 5:45," Lucy groans as he continues, "I figured you were a sure thing for sleeping in your own bed."
She huffs, pushing the door open wider and leading Tim into her kitchen. She pulls the bottle of wine out of her bag and puts it on the counter, watching as Tim locks the door and kicks off his shoes. "Besides," he carries on, pulling two wine glasses down from one of her high shelves, "you looked pretty bored on that date, figured you'd need some quality entertainment by the time you got home."
Lucy freezes, her hand still digging into one of her kitchen drawers to pull out her corkscrew. She looks over her shoulder, squinting at him. She thought she'd seen a Tim-looking guy walk by the patio she'd been seated on with her date, John, but she'd shrugged it off and gone back to talking. John had been sweet, had asked her to dinner after they'd gotten to know each other during his first few training sessions at her gym, but he was definitely more of a friend than a flirtation.
Besides, she had Tim if she felt the need to flirt.
She glares at him, turning on her heel and pursing her lips as she crosses her arms over her chest. "What were you doing, huh? Spying on me?"
He smirks, shrugging. "I was going to the pet store across the way for Kojo stuff," he offers. "I saw you and they were finishing up a fresh batch of those peanut butter treats he liked, so...I might've grabbed a coffee, scoped it out."
Lucy scoffs, squinting at him. "Spy," she points, shaking her head. "A dirty rotten scoundrel of a spy, Tim, oh my god."
He laughs, his neck going a bit red, and Lucy grabs the corkscrew out of the drawer, bumping it shut with her thigh before making her way over to him. "I'm just saying, you looked bored. Sad, even," he holds up a hand in innocence. "I figured you'd need...reinforcements, or something. I ordered Thai when I got here, should be here soon."
She rolls her eyes, giving him another faux-huff. She's not actually annoyed – she'd planned to call him after pouring herself a glass, anyway – but she thinks he should have to grovel a little. "I had a great time, thank you," she works the corkscrew into the bottle, ignoring the fact that she can feel Tim moving closer.
"You said it was bad," his voice is low, she can feel his breath on her ear. "Don't lie, now, Lucy."
She shivers, shutting her eyes but making sure her hands don't stop moving. "I'm not lying," she mutters. "Back off."
Tim chuckles and she swallows hard, annoyed because this is almost always what proximity to his fucking body does to her and she can't stand it. Whether he's adjusting her grip on the bars while they're training or he's cornering her in her kitchen about some dumb shit he did, he's annoyingly, agonizingly hot. "John's like fifty, you know that right?"
She elbows him in the ribs and Tim groans, but she feels him back away and lets out a laugh. "You're not much off," she smirks over her shoulder. "Now get this open for me, would you? We can talk about how many push-ups you owe me once I've got a full glass of wine in my hand."
Tim rolls his eyes at her, but there's a smile to it that makes her stomach flip as he grabs the corkscrew and gets to work.

"Gravity"
Gravity is working against me And gravity wants to bring me down
He has done the right thing. He is sure he has.
It doesn’t really align with the racing mind, the trembling hands, the… oh, are those emotions that he is feeling?! All the burning word he left unsaid: “I love you”, “I really want to try”, “we will get through this”. He wanted to tell them so badly, kiss Lucy, take her home (their home), try to make it work. But all of that just didn’t feel right.
It doesn’t really align with what happens to him in the coming days and weeks, too. He is aggressive, he is reckless and he is, well, he is not a very good cop. And this scares the shit out of him. If there is one thing he’s always been good at it’s policing. He has always been good at playing by the rules (that brought him comfort and reset his compass), but he’s been even better at using them. Finding the right rules to catch the bad guys the right way.
After Ray, after Lucy, he can’t tell right from wrong. Someone stole his fucking playbook and he doesn’t know how to play anymore.

Chenford + Lucy please look at me
He's seen her sob, held her through the hurt and pain and fear of confronting a nightmare, and, by the skin of her teeth, surviving it.
He's seen her so angry she'd lost her words and had to, uncharacteristically, walk away from further conversation.
He's seen her happy, and excited, and playful, and mischievous. In his presence, she's been worried, and wary, and both exhausted and amped up.
She's pranked him (and he's pranked her), they've joked and teased, they've squabbled, and he's corrected her a time or two.
But he's never seen her turn herself inside out with embarrassment.
It started out innocuous. She's a flirt, but so is he. And maybe it would have been different or easier or something before that kiss in her living room, or if they weren't both recently single. But they had kissed in her living room. And they are both single.
He can't decide if the fact that they're in public with their friends makes this better or worse. If they were alone, on her couch, in a candlelit room again... would she still be radiating the same mortification?
It helps, he thinks, that Angela, Wesley, Bailey, and John aren't making a thing of it. If anything, Wesley and John are ignoring it entirely, and Angela just looks intrigued. Maybe a little amused.
"Lucy," he says quietly, "please look at me." She's close enough to him that his words can be for her alone, but he can't see her face through the curtain of soft, glossy hair she's hiding behind. The others can see her face, he knows. He wonders what they can see there.
He's still learning to be familiar with her, to touch her casually. Because, for all they've been through together, every touch from her is arresting and electric, he can't help but make a spectacle out of noticing how she's touched him. For his part, he can't figure out how to be casual about it. How to touch her completely. To allow his palm to flatten against her.
He's always been cautious with when and how he's touched people - touched women, and especially women he doesn't have a sexual relationship with. He knows he has the power to communicate intention or make someone uncomfortable, so he curls his fingers under or uses only the tips of his fingers. And now, at his age and after so many years, something about the palm of his hand touching a person feels sacred.
No one has ever noticed this except her.
So when he presses his flat hand against the curve of her waist, he's aware of the difference, and so is she.
She doesn't — can't — look at him yet, but he feels the tension bleed out of her body a little, she shifts only slightly into him, but it's enough. He can feel the warm press of her hip against him, the pressure of her thigh against his, and then he slides his hand around a little and down, until he feels the warmth and silkiness of her skin between where her shirt ends, and her jeans begin.
The air at the table seems to lift a little, and the conversation kicks back into high gear. It seems like whatever it is that has just happened has irrevocably changed things, that it has somehow cemented them as a pair in this circle rather than two people in this group.
They'll have to say more, they'll need to talk, she needs to talk. She needs to say it out loud over and over until it doesn't feel like something she shouldn't say. She'll need to learn that he does talk —that he talks so much under the right circumstances when he isn't on constant guard — and that when he does, sometimes he says things he feels the need to hide from too.
But that's for later. Right now, he wants to sit at this table with people he enjoys, a cold beer in front of him, and his palm warm against her skin.

Buddie & Chenford: Interesting Similarities, Pure Coincidence, Or Smart Marketing?
Hello friends!! I’ve been thinking a lot about these two pairings and the actors that play these characters lately. And I just keep thinking about similarities I’ve noticed both with the actors and the characters. So I went on a deep dive and uncovered some things that were eye opening and eyebrow rising. Again these are all things I’ve just found to be suspiciously similar and made me really side eye everything that we’ve seen and everything that’s yet to come. I’m simply sharing my findings and once again leaving you to come to your own conclusions. I’m not trying to force any specific opinion onto anyone, simply sharing some things I found to be very similar and suspicious. These are my thoughts and I’m just sharing them. Take what you will from this please.
In this post I will be discussing a lot about certain people so I wanted to make a quick introduction to them:
Eric Winter who plays Tim Bradford
Melissa O’Neil who plays Lucy Chen
Oliver Stark who plays Evan Buckley
Ryan Guzman who plays Eddie Diaz
Alexi Hawley, The Rookie’s show runner
Tim Minear, 9-1-1’s show runner
The similarities I’ve uncovered far surpass what we’ve seen of the characters on the show. There have been some parallels with Chenford and Buddie and sure I will discuss that briefly. But I’m mainly going to focus on the behaviors of the actors portraying them.
The one obvious difference as of right now between the two pairings is that Chenford is currently an established couple, whereas Buddie is still considered to be platonic.
But before Chenford became a thing, they had a huge fan base who would ship the two characters heavily because of their natural chemistry on and off the screen. Early on, the characters started as mentor/mentee type where Bradford was Chen’s Sargent and partner while she was a rookie in the LAPD. Kind of like Buck and Eddie but only in the sense where they’re partners at work even though Eddie was technically a probie his first year!
Alexi gave many interviews in the beginning how he didn’t think there’d ever be a time they’d persue a romantic relationship between those two characters regardless of the magic they brought onto the show. He did emphasize that they had a specific dynamic and that it’s mostly come from the actors chemistry.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now why do I mention this? Because Tim has been very back and forth about Buddie. In the beginning he too would talk about their chemistry and dynamic but wouldn’t confirm or deny if things would become romantic.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Both Alexi and Tim had been asked questions on whether or not Chenford and Buddie would become anything more. And in the earlier years, both showrunners would stick to explaining how the chemistry these four had was very palpable and something they hadn’t foreseen. And that neither showrunner would stop writing specific scripts to prevent that intimacy and chemistry from flourishing.
Recently though, both their tones have changed. Both Alexi and Tim have made it known that they want to keep exploring the dynamic/relationship the characters have on the show.
Alexi:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tim:
Tumblr media
In an interview during season 3, Oliver mentioned how Tim doesn’t really anticipate how certain scenes he writes will come into fruition because of the chemistry between Ryan and Oliver.
Tumblr media
So basically even though neither relationship was originally in the plans, the showrunners couldn’t account for the beautiful natural chemistry between their actors. And once the stories started rolling out, they couldn’t help that their viewers started seeing a deeper bond then what was intended.
Joint Press Tours
As we know, Oliver and Ryan have been going on this press tour together to promote this season of 9-1-1. And a lot of their interviews really hone in on the Buddie relationship. Well Eric and Melissa also went on a press tour before the season their characters got together romantically. It’s interesting because they went on similar talk shows as Ryan and Oliver and even got asked similar questions.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
One important thing to mention is the love for the fans all four of these actors have. They’re always mentioning their respective fan base who without our love and support, wouldn’t have such a lovely coupling on a show so many people watch. Here’s a little video of all four of them mentioning their fans and how without us they wouldn’t be able to do what they do.
This next thing is probably nothing but I just found it a little interesting because both of those relationships had an article dedicated to their respective timelines.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now I don’t see articles such as this for any other friendship on either show. Nor have I seen one recently for any of the established couples. But there was a deliberate reason they created one for Buck and Eddie. And that happened to be something they also did with Tim and Lucy when they became a couple. So I just find this interesting and somewhat suspicious.
The Actors Thoughts Matter Too
Throughout the years, all four actors have been asked endlessly about their thoughts on their characters’ relationships. And I would say they’ve always somewhat varied. Like in the beginning, it’s really blatantly obvious that all four actors were adamant about what a great friendship it was and it was pretty much mostly platonic. But all four of them were also on board should things take a romantic turn. Instead of posting pictures, I’m just going to insert a few quotes from each of them.
Eric Winter: “Whether it's deeper friendship or whether it's going to be love, whatever the case is, she's not his typical rookie.” In the same article he mentioned how he “was on board with it” should it go in the romantic direction. (x)
Melissa O’Neil: “At that point, [the chatter] was really happening online, and we thought for sure that maybe there was subtext…We were asking [Hawley]: 'Is this a true confession that she's masking as a thing?' And he goes, 'No, it's not. This is a joke.' So I don't know when it clicked. But I was surprised because even at that point, it was not a thing." (x)
Ryan Guzman: “If the fans want to go there with it, it’s cool. I mean, we see all the memes, we see all the things that are posted on Instagram and you know I’m all for it.” (x)
Oliver Stark: “If somebody watches the show and that is what they read into it then I’m all for it. I’m so yes so wherever it goes I’m happy to go with it.” (x)
It’s always a good thing for any ship that the actors portraying them are on board and can see the potential of a romance brewing. It also stems from having that raw natural chemistry with your on screen partner which both pairs have. It makes it easier to come off on screen and that’s what grabs the audience’s interest.
I mean there’s a lot more articles and a simple Google search can bring you to them. I personally think this is already long enough but we all pretty much know that the actors love these characters and would be alright with them being in romantic relationships. We’ve already gotten Chenford and with the similarities we’ve seen and may continue to see, I think Buddie is on the same track to becoming canon too. Especially considering they’re now on the same network and have similar publicity strategies being implemented.
Buddie & Chenford Parallels:
The final thing I’m going to bring up will be the similar storylines or scenes we’ve gotten on both shows that heavily parallel one another. If Buddie, a non canon pairing is mirroring a couple that also started off as partners and are now a romantic couple, then it’s very reasonable to think they’ll become romantic too.
Instead of actually posting gifs, I’m going to attach beautifully created gifsets that already show all four characters paralleling one another.
Here’s a lovely gifset by @lover-of-mine that’s a bit angsty.
Here’s another one where one tells the other they’re newly single haha. Made by @livelovecaliforniadreams
A shooting parallel made by @halsteadsass 😭
And if you just need a GREAT summary of every other moment that’s heavily paralleled, then it’s all here by the lovely @livelovecaliforniadreams!!!
One last thing to keep in mind is that yes Eric and Melissa really started promoting season 5 before it aired. And that was ultimately the season they pretty much got together. The same season in which both of their characters were actually dating other people. And I made a little comparison of stills that were similar to a current possible storyline we would get with Buddie. Not necessarily saying Eddie and Tommy are going to be a thing. But the whole jealousy aspect is very similar in these pictures lol.
Tumblr media
Anyways if you’ve taken the time to fully get to the end, thank you so much! Again this is just something that’s been driving me wild because I’m seeing too many similarities and I wanted it all put together. I will reference where I gathered my info down here. If you have any questions, my ask box is always open 💜

the way tim deflates when lucy immediately reels back on her agreement to go out to dinner with him, only to perk back up when she clarifies that she needs to officially end things with chris first, is honestly the most golden retriever energy i've ever seen displayed in a human being.

Clean Cut
Tim Bradford x F!Nurse!Reader
Warnings: Mentions of bullets, war, shrapnel, anxiety, worry, car accidents. Slightly angsty.
Word Count: 1.2k
A/N: Okay so I just caught up with all The Rookie seasons and I’m just LIVING for Chenford. Like LIVING. buuuuuut I noticed there wasn’t much Tim x Reader fic out there soooooo I figured why not! This idea came to my head at some point when I was watching and I also have like a whole story of their life beyond and before this moment but enjoy this little reworked snippet from 2x08.
The Rookie Taglist: @drabbles-mc @justreblogginfics
Tumblr media
It had felt like a long day already and you had only been clocked in at the hospital for two hours. You still had 10 hours left in your shift and it felt like you experienced a whole day’s worth already. Being a corpsman for a Marine squad prepared you for a lot but sometimes the uniqueness of LA and the people who resided in it and tended to need your RN medical services at St. Stevens ran you for your money.
Currently, you were updating patient charts during the lull that was likely to last all of two seconds but it beat staying an extra hour to finish your paperwork likely unpaid because the hospital rarely approved overtime for RNs.
“Wanna tell me why it’s so crazy for a Tuesday?”
The statement from your coworker caused you to look at them over your shoulder and let out a laugh.
“I wish I had an answer to that, but I also feel like anything I say will jinx it even more.” You pushed the computer cart against the wall and moved over to your coworkers cart. “You’ve got like 15 pages here, what is this?” You picked up the manila folder that was larger than your normal ER patient folders.
“Police car accident. There’s a few of them in the ER right now, these things always include tons of paperwork. Everyone needs to cover their asses.”
Your heart started to beat faster at the mention of a police accident but what really caused you to go into panic mode was seeing your husband's name on the report.
Before you could even answer your co-worker you were moving down the stairs, knowing the elevator would take too long. You knew the elevator would probably be quicker but the thought of standing still while you waited for and in it would drive your mind crazy so rushing down the stairs was the better alternative.
Tim was sitting on one of the ER beds, the scene of it caused you to stop for a minute. It wasn’t the first time you’d seen Tim hurt waiting to be treated. In all honesty this was probably the tamest medical treatment scenario you two had been in together. He looked fine from afar, but that didn’t stop the worry from boiling in your gut.
“What happened?” You were next to him within seconds, the worry being the fuel of moving you from the staircase entrance to his side in seconds.
“I rear ended a civilian.” Tim knew better than to try and calm you down with pleasantries and relaxing mantras.
“Jesus.” Your hand moved to your pocket in search of your pen light. Quickly, you flashed it in front of his eyes, searching for his eyes to constrict and then dilate when you moved the light away.
“They already did this.” Tim’s voice was neutral, but you knew he was annoyed.
“Humor me.” Your head tilted, now your own annoyance was clear to him.
His eyes softened as they met yours and he nodded which gave you the okay to keep running through the trauma checklist in your head.
“This isn’t like you.” Tim said after a few minutes of silence between you as he humored you by lifting up his arms as you pressed down on his ribs and checked his reflexes.
“In what way?” You talked as you continued to look him over.
“I’ve come home and told you I’ve gotten shot at and you barely react, I tell you that I got into a car accident and you’re acting like I have internal bleeding.” Tim’s eyebrows raised.
“Did they do a CT scan? You could have internal bleeding. Especially if the airbags went off.”
“Doc.” The use of the nickname only 13 people in the world knew you as caused you to stop your examination of Tim and stand in front of him, slightly defeated.
“If I worried about every close call you encounter everyday, I’d be dysfunctional. This.” You pointed towards him and the bed, “This is tangible. This actually happened.”
Tim nodded and a smirk slightly filled his face.
“You doubtin’ me, Sarge?” You frowned as you asked him, using your own nickname for him.
“No,” Tim let out a chuckle and shook his head before looking back up at you. “I know better than to ever doubt you.”
“Smart man.” Officer Lopez walked up to the two of you with a smile. “How’s he doin’?” She looked between the both of you.
“He’s fine. No signs of a concussion,” you looked at Angela and then back at Tim, “and no signs of internal bleeding.” You smirked at him knowing he was going to give you one back.
“Give us a minute, Lopez?” Tim stood up and ripped the hospital bracelet off his wrist.
“Yea, just wanted to let you know the break lights were cut in the car you hit, foul play, you’ll likely be in the clear.” She explained while looking at the both of you, relief coming as a sigh from both you and Tim. “I’ll be in the lobby.” She nodded at him and squeezed your arm to say goodbye before leaving the ER.
“We goin’ back to the conversation we were having or a new one?” You asked Tim as he towered over you.
“You pulled shrapnel out of my abdomen in Afghanistan and you look more worried checking me for a concussion.” Tim said with his arms crossed. “What’s going on?”
“Nothing.” Your one worded answer wasn’t convincing.
“Don’t lie to me.” Tim said more seriously than any of his other statements.
You sighed, “Like I said, this is tangible. In Afghanistan, we weren’t exactly given the space to worry. Here, I feel like it’s all I have to hold onto. But again, if I held onto every worry I’d be dysfunctional. I know you can handle yourself when bullets are flying, when shit goes sideways, it’s these out of your control scenarios that just get me flustered.” You explained moving your hands around as you talked.
Tim brought you in for a hug, knowing nothing he’d say could change anything. “You do realize, I’m the one that rear-ended the civilian, not the other way around, right? Totally in my control.” He teased you.
“Not according to Angela.” You corrected him and he chuckled.
“I’ll see you tonight.” He placed a quick kiss on the top of your head.
“See you tonight, I already texted Angela all the concussion signs in case we missed anything.” Letting your last bit of worry out.
“You haven’t missed a single diagnosis or injury since I met you, Doc!” He called out from a few feet from you.
“You know, I’m technically not a doc, anymore, Sarge!” You yelled out to him.
He turned around with his arms up as he continued to walk backwards. “And I’m not technically a Sargeant anymore.”
“Old habits die hard!” You yelled back just before the elevator doors opened and he stepped backwards into the elevator flashing you a quick smile before the doors closed and he was back on duty.

Rook Book to Remember Me By
Part 2 of Rook Book
Pairing: Tim Bradford x fem!Metro!reader
Summary: Tim's delay in transferring to Metro may have cost him everything, and as he and Lucy search Los Angeles for a killer, he only has his memories and a fake rook book to remember you by.
Warnings: ANGST, death, fluff
Word Count: 3.6k+ words
A/N: I know this is a Chenford gif but it fits. :)

“What is that?” Lucy asks as she waits beside Tim’s desk. “A bomb?”
“Lower your voice, boot,” Tim snaps. “We don’t need a stampede.”
“Yes, sir. So, what is it?”
“What does it look like? It’s a book.”
“No, it’s a rook book with a bow on it. And I bet I know who it’s from.”
“50 pushups.”
“But-“
“You want double?”
Lucy frowns as she silences, and she watches Tim lift the book. He opens the front cover and shakes his head before dropping it into one of his drawers. Lucy doesn’t move toward the door, and Tim sighs as he leans against his desk.
“What?” he asks.
“Is that just a book? Or a none-rook-book-rook-book? Like the one somebody’s pretty TO used to carry?”
“Pretty TO?” you ask from behind Lucy.
Tim had been too distracted by the book and Lucy’s prying questions to notice you walk in. Dressed in your Metro uniform, you slide your hands into your pockets and smile.
“I’ll assume you’re talking about Tim,” you add.
“Yeah, right,” Lucy snorts.
“100 pushups it is,” Tim announces.
“Tim,” you chide softly. “You can’t blame her for being excited to see this side of you. It took me your entire probationary period to learn you could smile.”
“Chen, give us a minute,” Tim says.
“Do I have to?” she asks quietly.
“Yes,” you and Tim say together. The difference is that you add, “Please.”
You watch Lucy move toward the equipment room before turning to Tim. He furrows his brows and unconsciously blocks the drawer with your gift in it.
“I’m sorry I didn’t answer your call last night,” you begin. “Metro raided a speakeasy, and it went a little haywire.” “Are you okay?” Tim interrupts. “That’s what I was going to ask you. I know you tolerate me, maybe even like me a little, but you don’t call unless you need something.”
“I, uh, just wanted to hear your voice. But I’m fine, I promise.”
You nod and run your tongue over your bottom lip as you think. “Still have nightmares?”
“I’m fine.”
“Look, Lucy is ready to pass that test, but in the end moving to Metro is a big decision. One you can do; I don’t doubt that. Just… don’t stick around because you think you have some debt to pay or something. Your boot is important, but your career is too.”
“I’ll remember that.”
Your Metro Commander yells your name, and you lay a hand on Tim’s shoulder before whispering a farewell. He watches you go and decides that when he calls you tonight, he’ll ask why you chose the book you did. Hopefully, he thinks, it will allow him to admit some things. He needs more than your voice to calm him in the middle of the night these days.
Tumblr media
“Can I just say one thing?” Lucy asks from the passenger seat of the shop.
“Will me saying no stop you?” Tim replies.
“I think you’re really cute together. She’s been waiting for you, and I don’t think you should make her wait just because you’re scared.”
“What makes you think I’m scared? You mean well, Chen, but this is none of your concern.”
“Maybe not. But it’s yours, and you know I’m right.”
Tim wants to keep arguing, maybe threaten Lucy with more pushups to make her leave it alone, but the radio cuts him off.
“Attention all units. Officer down at Wilshire Federal Building. Metro requesting backup. Will advise.”
Tim’s world slows as he pulls the shop to a curb. He and Lucy are too far away to provide backup fast enough, but he can’t move until he knows that you’re okay. Lucy watches him as he stares at the radio, but with each second of silence, she gets more concerned for him.
“She’s going to be okay,” Lucy whispers.
Tim shakes his head. He doesn’t want to think about the alternative but believing that you’re okay without knowing is more dangerous than being wrong and hearing another officer’s name over the radio.
“Bradford, Chen, Harper, Nolan,” Wade radios. “Get back to the station and prepare to assist Metro.”
“Uh, you- you drive, Lucy,” Tim says as he unclips his seatbelt.
“Attention all units,” the dispatch officer begins.
She identifies the downed officer, and when your name is said, Tim’s world stops. He waited too long, and now he can never tell you how he feels. He had a crush on you, he wants to say, but it turned into so much more.
“Tim,” Lucy calls as she opens the driver-side door. “C’mon.”
Tim doesn’t feel any shame as he leans on Lucy. She ushers him into the passenger seat before she drives to the station with lights and sirens on. Tim’s silence is terrifying, and although Lucy is also feeling grief and is heartbroken to hear you’re gone, her concern for Tim outweighs her own emotions.
As Tim exits the shop, his devastation suddenly makes room for anger. He doesn’t blame any of your fellow officers, but if he had moved to Metro sooner, he would have been there with you, and maybe he could have changed the outcome. He slams the door and ignores Lucy as he storms into the bullpen.
Lucy and Tim slow as they see several Metro teams gathered together, but it’s obvious that something is wrong, something is missing. There’s a gap where you should be, and even the elite tactical officers seem lost without you.
“What happened?” Tim asks.
“Officer Bradford, we can’t release any information yet,” Wade answers. “Metro’s going to fill you in on what you need to know. They need as many of us as they can get.”
Tim clenches his jaw to stop the remark that he wants to make. The Metro teams are talking quietly, and he gestures for Lucy to step to his other side as he moves closer.
“You saw the shot?” one of them asks.
“Yeah,” someone answers.
“Then where’d they take her?”
At the realization that you’re not only gone, but they don’t even know where your body is, Tim begins looking around. He sees his Sergeant, Captain, and the Metro commanders huddled in a corner and walks directly to them.
“I want a position in the task force. You need more people, and I’m one of the few patrol officers who knows how to complete a manhunt like this,” he demands.
“I understand where you’re coming from Bradford, but you’re too invested in this to go out alone,” Wade replies.
“Then let me go with him,” Lucy interjects. “Tim knows what he’s doing, and we can patrol and engage in the manhunt at the same time, right?”
Wade looks to the Metro sergeant to his left, who shrugs noncommittedly. He sighs before nodding and tells Tim to get back out on the street and wait for the information about the gunman.
“Wait,” Tim tells Lucy as he stops beside his desk.
He pulls the book from the bottom drawer and tucks it under his arm before continuing to the shop. If this is his last drive where you’re involved, he wants you there. Or as close as he can get.
“Dispatch released a picture,” Lucy says before turning the dash computer toward Tim.
He looks at the picture until the light turns green, and then he begins a grid search surrounding the Wilshire Federal Building. If that man is still nearby, and Tim finds him first, prison will be the least of his worries.
“What’s the book?” Lucy inquires.
“It’s her favorite,” Tim answers.
“You know what her favorite book is. That’s really sweet, Tim.”
“She’s been telling me for years to read it and I keep making excuses not to.”
“And now?”
Tim nods, and Lucy knows that he is going to not only read the book but devour it and everything related to it to feel close to you again.
“7-Adam-19, assault in progress inside Shell gas station at the corner of Santa Monica Boulevard and Greenfield Avenue. 9-1-1 caller requested your presence on scene.”
Tim hits the steering wheel before telling Lucy to accept the call. He doesn’t have time to break up a fight in a gas station, not when your killer is on the loose. The gas station is less than five minutes away, but Tim gets grumpier with every minute. As he and Lucy enter the gas station, he’s prepared to jump in the fight just to finish it faster.
“You called the police, what’s the problem?” Tim asks the cashier.
The young girl looks scared; her face is pale, and her hands shake above the cash register.
“This doesn’t look like an assault in progress,” Tim adds with his arms crossed tightly over his chest.
Lucy steps forward to speak to the girl while Tim looks around. The gas station is empty, but Tim doesn’t make it far before he sees a blood trail on the floor. It rounds the end of the cashier’s counter and disappears under a door. Tim pulls his gun and whispers for Lucy to stay ready as he steps toward the door.
“In there?” Lucy asks.
The woman behind the counter nods, and Lucy gestures for Tim to go ahead. Tim pushes the door open and raises his gun to clear the room while Lucy stays on the other side of the opening. He looks down to follow the blood but freezes when someone speaks.
“Officer Bradford, California Penal Code 217.1 is punishable by what?”
“Chen!” Tim yells as he holsters his gun.
Lucy hits the light switch for the storage closet, and Tim kneels to lift a bloody gun from the floor.
“They said you died,” Tim says as he moves closer to you.
Tumblr media
You hear Tim begin asking questions when he enters the gas station and hope that the cashier that you scared by walking in covered in your blood can point him to your hiding spot in the storage closet. Your gun is on the floor beside your feet and your long-sleeve Metro t-shirt is balled against the gunshot wound in your shoulder.
When Tim opens the door, you ask him about a penal code before your head tips forward. Staying conscious while losing blood isn’t as easy as some may think, and you want to make a joke, but Tim jumps to action before you can.
“They said you died,” Tim says quietly.
He lays a hand over your cheek as his other hand applies more pressure to the fabric on your shoulder.
“I think that was the goal,” you mumble.
“Chen, radio for-“
“No!” you interrupt. Your voice raises at the idea of Chen communicating this news over the radio. “The men who we went in there to arrest have radios. They knew we were coming, but if they think I’m dead we can use that.”
“You need help,” Tim argues.
He reaches for his phone, and you lay a bloody hand on his forearm to stop him. You wait for him to look at your face to smile.
“We find another way to get help. But as far as anyone with a police radio knows, I’m still dead.”
“How am I supposed to get you treatment for a GSW without raising any red flags? Any ER nurse will call the police.”
“What about Grace?” Lucy suggests. “Nolan’s friend? If we could talk to her before we take you in, she may be able to keep it quiet.”
“If you think it will work, let’s do it,” you agree.
“No,” Tim interrupts. “We’re not putting your life in the hands of a rookie.”
“Tim, she’s right. This is a good plan and one we need if we want these guys off the street. Please, just trust me and Lucy for a few minutes. You can yell at us and brainstorm new Tim Tests later.”
“Call Grace,” Tim says as he moves his arms around you. “If this starts going wrong, or something happens to you, I will use my radio.”
“Understood.”
You keep your uninjured arm across your chest as Tim lifts you into his arms. Lucy leads the way out and opens the backdoor of the shop before apologizing to the gas station clerk. She leaves her card and scribbles the number of someone who can clean the bloody scene but reminds the girl not to call the police or tell anyone you were here. As Tim drives through traffic and Lucy talks to Grace, you notice a book in the floorboard and chuckle.
“What?” Tim asks quickly.
“You have my rook book.”
“Guess I don’t have to read it now that you’re not dead.”
“If I didn’t know better I would think you’re mad at me, Bradford.” “You know exactly what I’m thinking.”
“Don’t risk your job for revenge, Tim. I know you care about me, and I care about you, too, but this isn’t worth it. We work the case like any other.”
“Easy for you to say,” Tim snaps. “You didn’t think the woman you love was murdered twenty minutes ago.”
Lucy ends the call and looks through the cage at you. It’s not how Tim planned to tell you, but he feels lighter with the admission.
“I’m sorry, Tim,” you whisper.
“Tell me after.”
“I’m not waiting until the end of Lucy’s probation period.”
“Please don’t,” she agrees. “I can only take so much more pining from this one.”
“I don’t pine,” Tim grumbles.
“Yes, you do,” you and Lucy argue together.
“Bradford, status report?” Wade radios.
Tim looks at Lucy, who apologizes quickly for not communicating a code 4.
“Code 4, Grey,” Tim replies. “But don’t ask any questions right now.”
“Okay. As long as you didn’t break any laws, this conversation never happened.”
Tim glances over his shoulder at you, and you state, “I haven’t broken any laws. Have you?”
“Not yet.”
“If there’s blood on this book later, that’s your fault.”
Tim sighs, and it sounds almost like a laugh. You don’t have time to tease him before he pulls into the emergency room drop-off area of Shaw Memorial Hospital. Grace and several nurses run out and wheel you in quickly, promising to help you without asking any questions or reporting anything to the police.
“What now?” Lucy asks as the doors close behind you.
“Now, we find the people who are getting 15 to life for trying to kill an officer for completing her duties,” Tim answers.
“Tim,” Lucy calls.
He stops, and she points to the blood staining his skin. Tim opens the trunk of the shop and retrieves a pack of wipes from one of the war bags. Lucy watches as he harshly scrubs your blood from his skin and gets angrier with every wipe he tosses aside.
“Are you sure you’re up for this?” she asks.
“Lucy,” he begins as he slams the trunk closed. “I’m pissed off and I have a feeling in my chest that I’m not used to. But how I feel doesn’t matter. We’re going to get every single one of the people involved in this, and make sure they end up in a hole.”
“By ‘a hole,’ you mean prison, right?” Tim walks around the shop rather than answering, and Lucy rushes to repeat, “You mean prison, right?”
Tumblr media
“7-Adam-19, report to Sepulveda and Ohio Avenue.”
“What now?” Tim yells.
He steers the shop into an illegal U-turn and speeds down Sepulveda Boulevard. Lucy gasps as they near the intersection.
“Turn left onto Ohio,” she says.
“Why?”
“Just do it!”
“Second left onto Camden,” she adds after he turns.
Tim slams on the brakes when he sees someone sitting on the curb at the end of Camden Avenue. Lucy exits the shop as soon as it stops and rushes to hug you as you stand.
“Aren’t you supposed to be in the hospital?” Tim demands as he joins you.
“Uh, no?” you guess.
“It’s not your fight anymore. You’re dead, remember?”
“Tim-“
“No, you’re going home. You just got out of the hospital.”
“It was just a flesh wound. Lots of blood, a couple of stitches, but no long-term damage. Besides, when’s the last time you got to watch a ghost slap the cuffs on her killer?”
“Look around Tim,” Lucy encourages.
He already know where he is: the sight of his first arrest with you as his TO, it’s a day he’ll never forget. Tim groans before he waves his hand toward the shop. Lucy cheers and offers you her seat. It’s strange being in the passenger seat with Tim again; last time you were here, he was in long sleeves and fresh out of the Army. He was a great rookie, and he’s a great TO, but you want him to be more.
“Tim!” you alert just as Tim slows to a stop.
“I see him,” he agrees.
“Was that too easy?” Lucy asks.
“Well, it’s not over yet,” Tim responds.
“We can do it,” you tell Tim. “You go left, I go right, Lucy splits the middle.”
“This is the coolest thing I’ve ever done,” Lucy whispers from the backseat.
“Alright,” Tim agrees. “Lucy, you do whatever you have to do to get the one in the middle down, okay?”
“3… 2… 1…” you and Tim count down together.
You exit the shop silently and leave the doors open. As Tim goes wide to take down the suspect on the left, you move toward the man who shot you. You, Lucy, and Tim strike at the same time and push the suspects down onto the sidewalk. The man beneath you attempts to elbow you in the face, but you shove his head down against the concrete and warn him against moving.
When you cuff him and pull him up to his knees, the man gets a good luck at your face. His expression changes and he leans away like you’re truly a ghost. He tries to move back, but only tips and rolls into the street.
“Leave him,” Tim says as he reaches for his radio. “Grey, this is Bradford, Chen, and our missing Metro officer. We’ve got good news and three suspects in custody. Send backup to my location.”
“No R/A?” you ask. “Because you seemed really eager to send me back to the hospital earlier.”
“You seem fine,” Tim explains with a shrug.
Tumblr media
“Tim,” you call as you exit Wade’s office.
He’s changed into his civvies and is preparing to leave for the night. You can’t let him, though, because there is no more time.
“Can you- do you wanna come over for a bit?” you ask.
The left side of Tim’s lips move up as he nods, and you accept his hand as he leads you to his truck. Tim drives to your home in relative silence, and you use the time to find the right words to say. Once you’re inside, you sit on the couch beside Tim and decide to tell him everything. You’ve let him into your life and your house, now you just have to let him in on how you feel.
“You said you loved me in the shop today,” you say. “But I have been falling for you since the moment you walked into roll call your first day. You’ve always been more than my rookie and I can’t live another day without you in my life, Tim. I want you. Nightmares, embarrassing memories between us, fake rook books, all of it. I need you, Tim.”
Tim leans closer with his arm stretched on the back of the couch behind your shoulders. “This is better than 1001.66,” he murmurs.
“Did you just compare my confession of being in love with you to a penal code about bad checks? Because that is-“
Your words end in a hum as Tim curls his arm around your shoulders and kisses you. He tugs you closer, and you hold his face between your hands as you show him that your words are more than that. Tim has had a crush on you since he started patrolling with you, but now he knows that he loves you and needs you beside him. You push him, and he pushes you, but you do it because you know what you’re capable of.
Tim’s phone rings, but he ignores it as he pulls you closer, so your legs are bracketing his. He leans up to continue kissing you as his phone begins ringing again. You press your hands against his chest and break away to retrieve his phone. He follows your movement and peppers kisses along your jaw, completely uninterested in answering his phone.
You see the name on the caller ID and answer, “Hi, Lucy.”
“Hey!” she replies. “I wanted to ask how you’re doing. And if Tim’s alright after everything that happened.”
“We’re both fine,” you promise breathlessly.
“Wait-“
You assume that Lucy realizes that you answered Tim’s phone, which means you’re still together. She squeals into the phone, and you pull it away from your ear and smile.
“Oh, I have to tell Angela!” she yells.
Tim rolls his eyes and keeps one hand around your waist as he pulls his phone away from you. “Bye,” he says quickly before ending the call.
“Hanging up on your rookie isn’t nice,” you say.
“Like you wouldn’t have hung up on me.”
“You were scared to call because you had a crush on me.”
“Still do.”
“What? Tim-“
Tim cuts you off with another kiss; it’s his answer and a reminder of how he feels. You remember the rook book that was in his truck, but now that you’re a permanent fixture in Tim’s life, you can make sure he reads it.

Hmm. What? You're gonna have to do so many push-ups.
| ANATOMY OF A SCENE - CHENFORD EDITION 2.03 - The Bet
The idea of Lucy setting up Tim on a date is really wild when you think about it… Especially so early in their partnership. In the span of 6 months, he went from 'this isn't something you and I talk about' to letting her play matchmaker for him. Without biting her head off first. And while I'm sure the competitive side of him played a part, there's no way he would have accepted this from anyone else. I'm not entirely sure Angela would have succeeded in this endeavor.
But what makes this even wilder is the fact that they are flirting with each other the whole time. While they are discussing his date. In the break room. Tell me this wasn't foreshadowing their future double date… Or their inability to act normal during their secret relationship era. And their way of flirting is so them… The bickering… Tim doing his best to rile up Lucy by dismissing Rachel's job, knowing it would be a sure-fire way to annoy her. Or by pretending he will be picking the most expensive restaurant, with the most expensive dinner he can think of since she is paying… Seriously, his behavior here is so similar to the one of a five year-old who is pulling your pigtails because he likes you. Everything he says is to get a reaction out of her.. And Lucy tries so hard not to show her exasperation… But from the way he is smiling, it's clear that she is failing entirely. He's loving it.
'I'm just getting the lay of the land on my "date".' This line is so funny in retrospect… Because it couldn't apply any better to Lucy : by setting him up with her friend, she is getting a direct glimpse into what her date with Tim is going to be like. . Going to a romantic restaurant? Check. . Awkward vibes during the date? Check. . Date interrupted before they even get to eat (for very different reasons)? Check. . The mention of seabass on the menu? Check. . (Green dress? Check.) And it's evident that Lucy is really interested by his plans. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure she wants to make sure that this won't be completely unbearable for her friend… But let's be real, it is mostly for her own curiosity.
And that threat… I'm sorry but who says 'you're gonna have to do so many push-ups' in a bedroom voice… Sir, this is a workplace. And the fact that his tone of voice doesn't sound that different from how he will say 'nothing… I hope' later on, makes this even more hilarious. These two and their concept of boundaries...

I guess this is a sort of announcement - while I definitely *do* enjoy getting fic prompts in my ask-box (it's a mostly new experience for me), I have to warn that they might not all get written right away (or at all). My muse does whatever the hell she wants whenever the hell she wants.
