Rather than a pit of eternal damnation, it's thought that you'll serve out your sentence before leaving for one of the other afterlives ( which range from Vahalla to an endless field of grain ) where your soul will stay until you're ready to move on.

( Keep in mind that oathbreaking was seen as a far worse sin than rape and murder for much of history as it's a crime against both the gods and the community as a whole. Either they self destruct attempting to control all that power or they're hunted down for the good of all.
