Off topic but I think SPOPs best ship has to be between the super hot warrior princess and the literal AI hologram that forcefully discovers what being gay is. No other ship is honestly going to top that for me

I'm not the last 'autistic double standard Entrapta' anon but I am an autistic adult and I actually find discussions like these really interesting and just wanted to say my two cents. I am one of those autistic adults that tends to act more childish; not on purpose, that's just how I am. And there are lots of other adults on the spectrum who act similar or in the same way.
The problem isn't that we exist, the problem is that the media and society proceed to treat us like babies for it. I personally found Entrapta really enjoyable and relatable, but that quickly turned into disgust and horror when the other characters put her on a leash and pulled on her hair.
Hordak was the only person (that I can think of) that treated Entrapta as an actual adult, an intelligent and capable woman. I have no problem with shows and books portraying neurodivergent people to act more childish than the average adult; just make it so that the rest of the cast respects them as they should. Entrapta herself isn't the problem, it's how the show writers and most of the fandom treat her.
(btw this isn't an angry letter or an attack, I actually really loved the previous question and the response that you gave, this is just me offering my opinion LMAO sorry if it seemed like I was hostile)
dw you don't sound hostile at all! i totally get it. it's always helpful to have different perspective from people in the spectrum because i haven't interacted with that many autistic people apart from myself. neurodivergence is different for everyone so i didn't consider that entrapta being childish would not be that unrealistic.
and yeah, i agree. the way they treated entrapta was so fucked up, regardless of the context. no one should be treated that way and it's even more telling that the only character who was treated like that was the "weird and asocial" canonically autistic character. literally no one else in the series was so dehumanized. (not to mention, since entrapta can move her hair around, it's likely that pulling her hair would have hurt more than it would for a normal person.)
apart from hordak, i think scorpia also tried her best to understand and empathize with entrapta. scorpia is pretty childish herself so idk if she treated entrapta as an adult, but she considered entrapta as her close friend, and at least tried to be nice to her unlike mermista and perfuma.
it's just so unfortunate that entrapta is one of the few canonically autistic characters, and the show basically tells people that it's okay to dehumanize and mistreat autistic people.

Steven Universe/She Ra and how they accidentally turn groups of characters into one awful entity
I rewatched some early Steven Universe with @phosphoricbomb and I came to perhaps a more coherent description of what I hate about the show later on, and if you're a She-ra fan, I'm going to use an episode about that show as an example to make it clear.
I think, She-ra and SU are both really, REALLY good at character crafting. You care deeply for Garnet, Amethyst and Pearl, and Peridot and Lapis, when the show focuses on them individually, or on a single relationship they have which contrasts/complements them against each other.
Same for She-ra, not just its main characters which are a really fine batch, but also its side characters. When it invests time in Mermista, Perfuma, Scorpia, Entrapta, Frosta, Netossa and Spinerella, as INDIVIDUALS or as one-on-one relationships, you care about them.
But if you talk to anyone about "the princesses" in she-ra, they tend to hate them. Why is this?
There are many mentions of "the princesses" as an entity. At the start of the show it's Glimmer and Scorpia saying they get excluded by other princesses. However at no point in the show do you see an example of this occuring. There's Entrapta, where we do see this happening. Not in "No Princess Left Behind", where Entrapta herself INTERPRETS this as happening, but in "Launch". Which is an episode that has been critiqued by many for how the characters behaved. And I think it's "Launch" where people decide that "The Princesses" suck ass.
The reason for it is because they are fused into a single character. All individuality is sort of... eradicated, any different opinions tehy might've had on the situation individually is erased because the story needs them to have an antagonism against Entrapta, and tehy need to have Entrapta antagonise them, which means she needs to behave ridiculous and annoying so that they are "justified" for their response. So what I'm saying is that "Launch" is a disservice to Entrapta AND to "the Princesses" because while to an extent it adds character to Entrapta, it has to also write her and everyone else badly to get to the character moment in the first place. It didn't prove that her perception of a "me vs them" scenario was wrong, but the ending tried to say that she had proven herself to the "them", which shouldn't even exist because the princesses should all be individual characters, not this grouped together mass. I wish the show would've simply decided already if Entrapta was being discriminated and was justified for feeling left out, rather than the characters acting as a single entity berating her for her autistic quirks, and the show acting later in the same episode like it was over her building robots.
ANYWAY, that ONE EPISODE from She-ra as well as some weird comments from the first season COMPLETELY CHANGED how the fandom views an entire group of characters, regardless of how fun and well written they are as individuals.
Why does this relate to Steven Universe?
Because the ENTIRE SHOW KEEPS DOING THIS!!!
Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl are all brilliant characters, but as soon as the show groups them into one entity, or god forbid, groups EVEN MORE CHARACTERS INTO THE SAME ENTITY, that is when it starts falling apart.
This isn't just in the late series either, this is in several episodes in the first few seasons!!! "Full Disclosure" and "Joy Ride" have "the Gems" act as Steven's overbearing guardians, disregarding how, say, Garnet, Pearl, and Amethyst usually have different approaches. In those episodes they all have the same brain.
Steven Universe season 5 and Steven Universe Future are very much "Steven against the World". There are many episodes where, sure, Pearl or Garnet might fuck up and say the wrong thing, but you'd expect Amethyst, Lapis, Peridot, literally anyone who gets him on his level to try and make an individual attempt to connect with him. Spinel gets half an attempt? But every character - Every character, INCLUDING THE DIAMONDS - gets grouped into this category of "The Gems". It's exactly the same as She-ra's "The Princesses".
An early example of complete personality erasure is probably... Lapis and Peridot. The show tried to make them a duo but it didn't really work on their relationship, it just needed to wipe them out of the story so treated them as one character.
The Off-colours are probably the worst example from SU proper. How they all become Lars's backup.
I think it's unfortunately because every time SU really tried to make an ep about a character, it did a great job. Every time it WASN'T about why that character is an obstacle to Steven it did well, but unfortunately when the show focused more on him, it had to make everyone else... the same enemy. Regardless of how their character was written before.
Anyway that was my ted talk, i really love early SU and it was sad watching Jailbreak and On the Run again because those eps are so good at handling the Crystal Gems as individuals.

YOOOOO IT'S MY WEEKEND and I have eaten dinner and it is time for MORE SHE-RA
yayyyy
OH GOD we're getting into the really good shit btw
if I manage not to do a marathon of these it'll be a gd miracle
Usual reminder: this is a REwatch and there's spoilers ahoy, I make a lot of bad jokes, I reference other cartoons
s4 ep10 fractures
okay before we get started
ahahah
Tumblr media
I've given in. I'm gonna cosplay Catra. >_< wish me luck, I'm aiming for some kinda loosely post-canon thing, in part because there's no hiding my age at this point, except via like, photoshop pfft
side note the place I was looking at that makes custom fangs based on dental impressions is usually a month and change out, and the con I want to wear this to is in mid-April. *GROAN*
I have tried the cheap ones they don't stay on D:
OKAY
Tumblr media
Dialogue is Double Trouble. Why are you even in the room??
oh it's a truth-telling spell lol
(it didn't work)
Tumblr media
LOLOL the disbelief in Double Trouble's voice. "Can she do that?"
Tumblr media
oh my GOD (yes it's Double Trouble)
but their Adora looks like Johnny Bravo aaahaha
Tumblr media
Double Trouble does blow a raspberry at Shadow Weaver, tho, so they're forgiven
Tumblr media
Adora explains the Heart of Etheria Project
Shadow Weaver: oooh we can use this to our advantage Me: okay Boromir but NO
Tumblr media
nO
Adora's about to blow a fuse, but I would be, too! Like what part of "the planet could explode" is fucking difficult
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, Catra is watching porn video feeds of places the Horde has taken
Tumblr media
and thinks she spots someone!!!
(she hasn't, and she makes a sad little face when she realizes)
Tumblr media
yeah she's being a bitch but also her deranged little face is great
Tumblr media
OR EVERYONE COULD DIE. THERE'S ALSO THAT.
Tumblr media
YAYYYY
does anyone else remember the old video "what your fave she-ra ship says about you"? this was made just after s4 actually. anyway I'm remembering it because it includes the line "you just want good things for Scorpia. and really, who wouldn't?"
youtube
Daci and I, for a while, couldn't stop quoting the ContraPoints clip used early on to reference "The inherent eroticism of the sea."
"MMmmm yeah. Don't you wanna just...get in there?"
It's a really funny video (I am called out SEVERAL TIMES) and the channel did a bunch of similar videos for other shows.
(also looking at the home page of the channel, she's a she now!!!! HELL YEAH)
Tumblr media
Anyway everyone is surprised to see Scorpia :D
Tumblr media
And their initial reaction is Not Good D:
Tumblr media
the poor thing accidentally stuns Perfuma (...oh god that'S HILARIOUS knowing later stuff)
Tumblr media
well that stops Adora in her tracks
back in the Fright Zone, Catra thinks she hears Scorpia's laugh and again is visibly relieved before realizing she's wrong
Tumblr media
babygirl you need some rest (and so do your soldiers), you are getting paranoid and hearing things
Tumblr media
so what, you're going to torture the rest of the soldiers who haven't left????
(I understand why she does the things she does but I still want to shake some sense into her)
Tumblr media
JUST GET SOME GD SLEEP
she tries to call Double Trouble, but they don't answer
Tumblr media
I want to give her a hug. But also shake some sense into her.
Tumblr media
Another one to add to my "cartoon bondage" collection, as one does. But Perfuma is clearly a little smitten, though: she smiles as she walks away and makes a flower grow in the vines, awwwww
okay oh my GOD okay Scorpia's dialogue is KILLING ME i am CACKLING
"Wow...Yeah, but just-- Shadow Weaver. And at Bright Moon. Everything is making so much sense about why Catra's been acting the way she has."
Tumblr media
Adora goes wide-eyed at Catra's name, Shadow Weaver looks at her, and then Adora looks away, pissed off.
Tumblr media
like I was saying: SMITTEN
Anyway Scorpia explains why she wants to go find/save Entrapta, who's on Beast Island, and:
Tumblr media
bahaha
they relate various stories about the horrors of Beast Island and Shadow Weaver insists they're nicer than the actual place, it's starting to sound like some bad joke about Etheria's version of Australia
Tumblr media
I mean also you should go get her because she shouldn't be stuck there but okay
They all decide to go to Beast Island to rescue Entrapta but Glimmer is having NONE of it
Glimmer: "Adora, have you ever heard of anyone coming back from Beast Island? Do you even know where it is?"
I mean, good points, but
Tumblr media
aaaugh
Bow: "There's an unstable mass of magic in the middle of the planet. Everyone's at risk unless we can get Entrapta to shut it down."
OKay I'm not typing up the whole damn episode you can read the transcript if you really want to, lol they argue about this for a bit longer, Glimmer even recommends they ask Light Hope how to use it even though that's a terrible idea, Glimmer tries to appeal to Bow but Bow is on Adora's side on this one
Tumblr media
oh honey, no
She tries to order Bow and Adora to stay in the castle and not leave
Scorpia's "prison cell" is a very nice spare room. Perfuma brings her a salad and Scorpia doesn't recognize it as food immediately, the poor thing has only ever had ration bars.
Frosta: "It's not a sleepover!!! Perfuma: ":D I'll get pillows, brb!"
But then Frosta asks about her pincers with genuine interest and makes ones for herself out of ice...and Scorpia starts to cry
Tumblr media
;_;
Tumblr media
;_;
Tumblr media
GO. TO. BED. oh my god
I RAN OUT OF IMAGES fhghgh okay gonna reblog

HEADCANONS IF ENTRAPDAK WAS CANON IN S2/3 ONWARD
I really would’ve loved to see them interact more in the earlier seasons, (1 or 2) because hordak at first is just this big ass villain that we don’t see much and he’s just this big looming and then in comes a princess that accidentally got locked in and she’s not one bit scared and walks on by and he’s immediately intrigued to find out this woman’s deal and why he kinda likes it?? long story short, yes, they’re seeing each other and yk what good for them and me!
A EPISODE WHERE THE REBELLION KEEPS TRYING TO GET INTO THE FRIGHT ZONE AFTER SEEING THE HORDE GETTING BIG THINGS AND THINK THEY'RE PLANNING SOMETHING BIG BUT NO IT’S ACTUALLY JUST HORDAK IS JUST PREPARING A DATE FOR HIM AND ENTRAPTA AND HE KEEPS TELLING THEM TO PLEASE LEAVE HIM ALONE FOR ONE NIGHT
EPISODE WHERE THE TWO GO ON AN ALONE MISSION AND EVERYONE IS CONFUSED WHY HE'S THERE WITH  HER FOR ‘NO REASON’ BUT HE JUST WANTS TO PROTECT HER
BASED ON THAT ART OF LIKE HORDAK AT PRINCESS PROM- I THINK IT WOULD B HILARIOUS IF HE DID GO AND FREAK THE SHIT OUT OF EVERYONE but he is literally just sitting there wanting to spend time with entrapta so she’s not alone and cause he loves her
catra just having to deal with them being literally attached to each other while she’s not trying to tear out all her hair from frustration like she’ll be waiting to be sent out on a mission but hordak is busy worrying over keeping his lab partner safe
super pal trio having girl time or a sleepover and entrapta gushing about him to catra and scorpia (much to catra's dismay)
her ‘hiding’ in his cape
HER WEARING HIS CAPE (even if it pools around her)
( i think i have seen this before, and yk what i need everyone to know that i frickin' love it-) but her causally chilling in the throne while hordak is the one standing next to her
hordak trying to make announcement to the horde and entrapta just in the background or interrupting randomly and his demeanor changing as soon as she’s near them
a episode about rumors (they progressively get weirder and funnier through it ) about them and what they do together and trying to keep it secret in the worst and obvious way possible but little do they know imp records them and plays it back to them after hours and they just listen to it and laugh while they wind down
her climbing about the throne whilst he's trying to be serious like a lil gremlin
(inspired by some amazing fics!) episode where entrapta gets impromptu taken on a mission by the rebellion that tries to get her back on their side but she isn't complying because she has 'relations' back there but they aren't putting two and two together the whole time meanwhile hordak is losing all his fucking shit trying to find her and get her back
episodes where the super pal trios are out on missions on their own and just having entrapta getting spammed by hordak
and now during the 'imperfections are beautiful' scene and afterwards with the crystal she actually tells him what it means and it is the first time she has said it to him and it is
hordak loving her calling her his queen and lady of the horde and addressing like that teasingly and affectionately <3
the first time soldiers/cadets call her the title it does not even phase her in the slightest
gag idea for this au: the rebellion is either 110% oblivious with them being together and every time someone or they (entrapta or hordak) try to tell them they just interrupt them and it is just so silly
or they just know by looking at them (there's no in between)
hordak gifting her weapons of mass destruction and war crime and shit and her seeing it being the most romantic thing (because it is!)
and even more angsty hordak during season 4, leaning even more into wanting to show off to ur ex that you are doing great since the break up cliche
and flip side with entrapta being angsty and just wanting to forget about their ex cliche
ergo a even more emotional reunions/meetings in season 5, yes i am just doing this for imaginary fan-service (come get ur juice!)
ignore my blatant screaming in the first three hcs, i just got those ideas randomly and scrambled to write them down

Mm, it would seem no coherent thoughts have come to me, instead I have been hit with the realisation that Hermie is, in fact, Double Trouble from She Ra and that he would embody them as much as he could after he discovers them.
How would he find out this fact? It all starts with Normal going through Hero's online library (and I do mean library, because it's fucking massive) of anime and cartoons in an attempt to relate to Taylor more. Instead of finding an anime that he wants to watch, he stumbles across She Ra and he gets Hooked.
Normal watches all 5 seasons over the course of a weekend, gelling hard with the characters, the colours, the themes of friendship. My boy, for lack of a better term, hyperfixates.
Anyway, as he's watching he sees his friends in the characters. Scary is Catra: a girl that's lost, that has people keep leaving her, that is fighting for what she thinks she believes in because she's finally getting attention and validation even as she misses her friends on the other side, a side she doesn't think she can get to (also Willy is Shadow Weaver, a manipulative asshole that preys on vulnerable young people and uses emotional and physical abuse to make them bend to his will).
Link is Bow: someone that values friendship and trust above all else, who can hold a grudge when he gets betrayed. He loves his dads even if their relationship is strained sometimes, and he's almost always the one to get them back on track when they start down one tangent or another.
Taylor is Frosta: someone quick to violence but very loyal and loving, even if he doesn't express it in traditional ways. He's also very enthusiastic and (despite very clearly being the main character, obviously) is willing to help his friends, even at risk of endangering himself.
Normal sees himself in Scorpia. She's so friendly, and she tries so hard, and he relates to holding onto friends too tightly because he's afraid of them leaving. He relates to being the peacekeeper and mediator, bending over backwards to try and keep his friends happy. He relates to having a core piece of his identity being taken from him, twisted into something he isn't sure he can be or relate to anymore.
As he goes further through the seasons, Normal has fun with the show while also hurting for the characters. When DT first shows up in the Crimson Waste, he's on edge, worried about what this new character might do, but as he goes through and DT starts to turn up more regularly he becomes endeared to them, enjoying them and the chaos they bring even as it kinda fucks up what the Princess crew are trying to do. It isn't until Normal sees how DT interacts with Catra while they infiltrate Brightmoon that he really starts to see some Hermie in them.
It start when DT calls Catra "kitten". Normal has a vivid flashback to Hermie saying almost the exact same thing to him, and from there the parallels only become more apparent. The casually flirty nature, the ability to disappear into roles (shape-shifting, surprisingly, included) the confidence in themselves but still needing a role to slip into to stay safe. There are some bits that don't translate quite so well - Normal's fairly certain that Taylor isn't paying Hermie to stick around with them (or maybe friendship is just Hermie's currency... Huh), and the thought of Hermie betraying them after all they've been through together just doesn't quite sit right although if it happened with Scary it could happen with anyone.
Anway, after this, Normal feels like he can't just keep this reaslisation to himself and so he trawls the mess the internet has become and sends Hermie a DT compilation video with a very simple "its u :)" for context. Normal sees that Hermie reads the message but thats it, no response or anything so Normal, a little saddened that his friend didn't seem to like the comparison, goes about his day.
The next time Normal sees Hermie, he has his hair slicked back, is dressed in green-and-black skin-tight everything, has coloured contacts, and heeled boots that seem too high to walk in (Hermie, of course, manages to flawlessly). He even seems to be able to blink sideways like DT. As he walks past, all Hermie does is glance at Normal, wink, and purr "kitten" in a low voice before strutting away. Normal nearly blacks out from the rush of blood to his face.

hi i hope bringing this up on anon isnt seen as rude im just quite anxious, but ive read through your blog and posts about pro/anti ship discourse and at first i think i leaned more toward the anti-mindset bc "oh well these are bad things, i dont want to see them, they shouldn't be glorified, ect." but i do want to be open minded and listen to actual survivors/people who use this to cope and just generally broaden my understanding. I don't want more censorship or anything bc i understand what it can lead to, I think I was just operating under the mindset of "this is taboo and people just shouldn't do it, let alone enjoy doing it" but if its proven to help some people I don't wanna shame them? It is kinda my job to not let curiosity get the better of me and read things that I know might trigger me, I just never understood if there was a Good Reason for that content to exist or if it was created by/for the pleasure of actual abusers. hopefully i worded this appropriately, I just didn't want to come off as antagonistic and possibly get yelled at for being misguided ! <3
Don't worry! So long as I'm not actively being sent hate, I'm totally fine with anyone interacting with me (of course, so long as they are fine with me interacting with them!)
The sad truth is: you can't be 100% sure why someone is making dark content. The person writing your blorbo getting murdered could be wanting to murder themselves, they could be dealing with trauma related to a murder attempt or someone close to them getting murdered, or they could simply be a fan of true crime. Even if you were to ask them, theres a good chance they might not give you a straight awnser.
In my case, the main fucked up thing I like is abusive/toxic relationships. Catra/Scorpia, Junko/Mikan... you name it, I probably ship it. I might ship things with other problematic elements, but the abuse is what draws me to the ship, if you catch my drift. I don't go into details about it on the internet, but the reason I like toxic ships so much is because almost all of my IRL relationships have been toxic in some form or another. Those ships remind me of people I want to have in my life, but can't for my own health. They bring me comfort when I mourn those relationships like a lost limb.
Of course, this is the internet, so theres a chance that sob story might be made up so I get less anon hate.
Another thing I frequently wonder about. If I were as antis say I am: a person actively looking to abuse and groom children on the internet. (Even typing that is a big yuck! Do not like even thinking about that.) Would I openly ship pairings that would cause people to be mistrustful of me? Actual creeps would likely not be open about liking problematic stuff, because it would likely make things harder.
Not liking certian types of pairings is completely reasonable! One of the main things I'm grossed out by are teacher/student relationships. (Ex-teacher/student relationships where the student has graduated or dropped out is completely fine!) As a result, I block all ships I know to have that dynamic, and if user "Iadorewhenstudentstopteachers" follows me, I will likely block them for my own peace of mind! Proshipping doesn't mean I enjoy every ship individually, it just means (for me) that I look past the ship and to the shipper.

Hey I say your post about a monarchist faction in the Horde & it really struck me as an interesting idea.
What other types of factions do you imagine were in the Horde.
Honestly, I haven't a coherent idea about the early days of the horde, but just pulling some possible plot threads from a hat (a lot of it brainstormed with @jidblogger) I would think...
The 'rebel monarchist' faction consisting of Scorpia's moms and their followers rebelling against Scorpia's grandfather
Turncoats from Scorpia's grandfather who aren't particularly loyal to Scorpia's mothers, but like the idea of being on the winning side.
The bandit faction, consisting of the kind of people we met in the Crimson Waste and Seaworthy who're happy to follow anyone who promises plunder (Octavia would fit well in here)
The 'fuck the monarchy' faction who really likes the idea of a non-princess power-holder (I personally don't buy into the idea of Etheria pre-horde being ruled exclusively by princesses, but the Horde propaganda sure seem to suggest someone would be susceptible to that idea). May or may not consist to a higher degree of lizard people and other 'non-human looking Etherian's' than the general population (again, taking inspiration from the propaganda).
The (small) 'aliens are cool' faction consisting by a handful of kindred spirits to Entrapta. Makers and magicians who really want to learn more about the world outside Etheria and/or robots.
Related: Maybe even one or two confused religious people who actually wanted to know about that whole Prime thing, or who confused Hordak with the first ones (who I headcanon have at least some religious significance on Etheria) due to him coming from Somewhere Else.
The 'at least the train leaves on time' faction who don't care who runs the place as long as there is a ration bar in it for them (a possible explanation for all the orphans is that years of war in the Scorpion kingdom had led to a large homeless population, and Hordak was simply the first one hitting on the novel idea of giving them food and shelter (due to religious reasons - everyone is welcome under Prime, after all)
The "fuck those other guys" faction(s) (closely related to the bandits). Ties in to my idea of Etheria mostly consisting of independent city-states. Then people from Elberon could join up when it looked like the Horde would attack Thaymore, who they had a trade conflict with (only to be dismayed when the Horde went on to attack Elberon).
Shadow Weaver
and of course, after a remarkably short time a place like the Horde which runs on pecking order and office intrigues will have amassed plenty of factions that are not defined by ideology, but simply are different gangs within the organisation. We saw that play out during the show with different (overlapping) factions forming around Catra, Entrapta, Lonnie and (in a manner of speaking) Scorpia, with Double Trouble running around like a kid in a candy store and making things worse.

FIRST POST!
First post and I'm here for the violence. This post will be short and about my gripes with She-ra.
So... Basically back in like 2019-2020 I was hanging out with my cousins who kept clowning on me for not having seen the show. I decided to binge the whole thing and that took maybe 2 days of consistent watching and much attempted phone throwing to finish it. There were so many shitty characters, bad jokes, and stupid plot points that I wanted to just give up. Of course because I had already suffered through it once I went home and made my mother watch it with me again.
ROLL CALL!
Catra is an irredeemable ass who I guess tried to do the Zuko redemption ark thing and fell flat on her face. Still by far one of my favorite characters though. Adora has one of the worst haircuts I have seen in a while and her being a dumbass who still falls in love with Catra despite Catra actually being the cause of one of her friend's parents deaths is insane. Glimmer. Never liked her and I never will. Bow deserved better than GLimmer he really did. Entrapta is big relatable. Scorpia deserved better friends. Hordak is just daddy issues. Shadow Weaver needed her weave snatched. And the rest of them are not important enough for me to remember! In short fuck em. Fuck most of these low iq assholes.
The relationships roll call!
Catradora is a toxic disaster that was not well written in the slightest.
Glimbow or whatever you wanna call it just shouldn’t have happened. They didn’t have nearly enough chemistry and Glimmer spent the large majority of the series being an immature ass. Bow should’ve just stayed single.
Spin lady and Net toss lady I don’t give two shits about, they barely got enough screen time for me to even remember they existed with the exception of season five(?).
Entrapdak idk Hordak got them severe anger issues, I don’t see them lasting long.
Mermista and Seahawk I prefer them separate just because Seahawk was just too pushy.
And all the other weird little relationships that were probably better that were hinted at or teased get an honorable mention as it is what it is.
That’s just the people related things that bothered me but I’ll probably never make another post about this godforsaken show.

13 & 25 for the ask game
Hi Madison :D
13. worst blorboficiation
Ahhhhh!!!!
With Adventure Time - it's Finn. Again a lot of people see him as a victim of everything, especially not having a girlfriend, and it's disheartening. I also think, he has an interesting relationship to trauma, and a lot of people want to fit him in the same box as Steven Universe, who has a VERY DIFFERENT relationship to the events of his show. But Finn has actively chosen to embrace his chaotic adventure life, and yes that's messed him up in some ways, but does that really make him different to anyone else in Ooo? I love this world's darkness and how it colours its characters in ways that subvert what we'd expect. I don't see a need to fit it in a normal dramatic storytelling box.
With Spop - Referencing my last post, it's gotta be Hordak and Catra, tied together. Because yes Catra is a sad little meow meow in a lot of fanworks who mean nasty Glimmer is being mean and nasty to, but also, even though it's less common, it feels WAY WORSE when Hordak fans do it. Because, what you'll get is stories where everyone is like "sweet precious hordak" and then they'll turn around and say "DIE CATRA!!!!". It's very clear the authors of such stories are responding to Catra fans that hate Hordak, and have decided to do the exact same thing and make every character hate Catra and be friends with Hordak. I'm thinking of a specific author here. It's really fucked up because Hordak was one of Catra's abusers, and they'll have Adora and Entrapta - two of the most forgiving characters in the series - decide Catra is bad forever and should die. Or, fucking hell, SCORPIA becomes friends with the man who killed her family. Except, wait, the author has decided that he didn't kill Scorpia's family, it's all the fault of Shadow Weaver/King Scorpio/something else because "Hordak would NEVER do something so evil!!1!!!! It'd make him irredeemable!!!!!" Jesus christ, I hate it when people don't understand the richness of the characters they're dealing with!!!
25 - common fandom complaint that you're sick of hearing
Adventure Time - above. Finn doesn't need a GF. The end.
She-ra - "The princesses were so mean to Entrapta!!!" - Yes they were mean, yes in many ways there is ableism, but also Entrapta was written to be manic, constantly running into danger without regard for herself and others, and there was no communication between the characters. You know what though? This doesn't mean that we're supposed to leave the episode thinking Mermista is ableist and mean and the princesses are BAD. They have decided to be her friend and they now understand where Entrapta is coming from, and she now understands why everyone was so mad at her.
What frustrates me the most is taht people will see an episode that has some writing flaws and go "these characters are irredeemable monsters" instead of, yknow, confronting the writing problems of the story??? Or, even worse, some people will think the Princesses were RIGHT to yank the girl around because she was being naughty. Why did the shera team think it was OK to have Entrapta be thrown around on a leash twice, and then try to end the story as if it was all a big misunderstanding??? That's a WRITING ISSUE. The she-ra characters aren't real, they don't exist outside of the context of being fictional. The counter-argument here is, "the writing makes the characters", but this is a conversation that needs both of these things to be addressed. People just continue as if it was an OK episode but the characters were mean.
You can either choose to write them better next time or you can give up and claim "Wahhh wahh mermista bad!!!" because one of the episodes she was in was trash.
I think there is a lot of value in Launch in that I related hard to Entrapta's perspective as really wanting to connect to the princesses, but falling short, messing up a lot, and how she ran away upset that she'd never bridge the gap. And how Mermista ran after her, because even after everything Mermista doesn't want her to get hurt or die!!! She cares about her safety and when the princesses see the depth of Entrapta's emotions, when they see she ISN'T going to betray them again, they embrace her as one of their own.
However I recognise that she isn't written nearly as... un-self aware in other episodes. It was a writing choice to have them get mad at her over her neurodivergent characteristics and, i suppose, mental health problems, instead of the whole "killing them with robots" thing. They thought it'd be funny, i guess?

HELLO EVERYONE
it is Thursday night which means it's my weekend which means IT'S SHE-RA TIME
On a related note a bunch of the stuff for my cosplay (like, clothes) gets here tomorrow and then I can put it all together and look in front of the mirror and make weird noises at myself and take terrible selfies, so stay tuned for that yeah? Yeah!
OKAY
I'M STARTING SEASON FIVE oh god
s5 ep1 Horde Prime
My semi-frequent reminder that these are a re-watch, spoilers ahoy, I make a lot of dumb jokes
I'm going to tRY to scale back on how much of the episodes I like, describe. Those last two eps of s4 I ended up just telling the whole thing, to the point of copy/pasting a shit-ton of dialogue from the damn fan transcripts.
BUT THERE WAS SO MUCH LORE AND STORY AND SHIT and I want to remember everything uggghhhhh
okay I just noticed the rating, and I can't screenshot it bc it disappears when I pause, but the show is rated for age 7 and up and says "fantasy violence, fear"
Fear??? I mean that's...not wrong. But it feels like a weird way of wording it?
Tumblr media
This was pretty, but then the damn Horde Prime ships showed up.
Tumblr media
you broke the sword, girly
(for good reason! but still. also the music actually starts the little rah-rah transformation tune and then cuts off)
Tumblr media
I hate it when creepy dudes watch me via bot soldiers
I remember reading that there are parts of the intro that change multiple times across this season, and I know Daci and I just skipped the intro every time when we marathoned this season back in 2020, so I'm watching them all this time, and
Tumblr media
O_O
Tumblr media
And she's not She-Ra! Just Adora!
Tumblr media
the shards of Narsil....wait wrong fantasy story
Ohhhh they're all hiding under some kind of invisibility/protection shield constantly maintained by sorcerers. That makes sense.
ALSO I remember noticing this the first time, but you can tell they got a higher budget this season.
Tumblr media
ugggh let it go
Everyone else says the same thing lol (along with "literally we can't because we don't have She-Ra anymore")
Adora's obviously still engaging in her self-sacrificial bullshit and Perfuma's like "no u gotta take ppl with u" but then
Tumblr media
NOT. HELPING.
Tumblr media
I mean Glimmer's room on the ship is nice (if sterile and too brightly-lit) but oof
Tumblr media
oh, are you also lonely? do you also long for someone at least a little familiar? Hm????
Tumblr media
;_;
Tumblr media
Horde Prime just like "yo my bro hated your guts when I showed up lol did u know that"
Tumblr media
(referring to the Heart of Etheria) yeah sweetie that's not gonna save your ass for long
He's so fucking creepy!!
Also I know they were inspired by megachurches and conservative Christian stuff when making Horde Prime's ship, but the music here even sounds kind of like an organ!
(...which is funny when you remember that megachurches usually have, like, rock bands)
Tumblr media
Stop doing your self-sacrificial bullshit....without us!!
Tumblr media
Does anyone else always wonder what they use for bathrooms?? The ones in the Fright Zone didn't have obvious restrooms either. Anyway.
Tumblr media
So I know people were shipping Glitra for obvious reasons before this season but this whole storyline was just fucking great on that front lol
But also look at how fucking SMUG she is!
bahaha the "how's it going, Princess?" line is said almost as unnecessarily sexy as the "hey, Adora" thing
Tumblr media
HAH. Glimmer is RIGHT.
Catra: nah man I'mma kick my ass to the top like I did last time Glimmer: u will get crushed like a BUG you DIPSHIT Clones: COME TO DINNER
Tumblr media
oh sure, NOW you're looking at her for sympathy pfft
Tumblr media
Clone: PRAISE THE LORD Everyone else: oh please shut the fuck up
("April aren't yOU Christian" yes but like, not that kind.)
Tumblr media
Who else read A Wrinkle in Time? Remember that meal they had on Camazotz where everything tasted like sand to Meg because she was the only one who was completely resistant to the hypnotism bullshit IT did? Anyway that's what I'm reminded of.
Tumblr media
the little she-ra doll :(
Tumblr media
Even Catra's not thrilled to see this. (That or she saw Scorpia fighting and feels guilty)
Tumblr media
When says "Adora," Catra scratches the table
Tumblr media
GLIMMER GOD DAMMIT (but also look at poor Catra's face)
Tumblr media
OH RIGHT because if he knows this he has no reason to keep Catra around.
Tumblr media
But she can't stop looking at the screen where Adora just was ahahah
Tumblr media
YOU COULDN'T DO IT ALONE BEFORE
lol Bow says it. "You're not alone. You've never been." But he's nicer about it than me.
Catra: oooh, princesses and their *~feelings~* Horde Prime: lol you're not any better
Tumblr media
I am actively resisting the urge to make a BBC Sherlock reference. IYKYK.
"Adora means something to you." 👀
His little speech about "you Etherians are all alike, such strong connections to each other...it's what makes you weak," is such a great way of contrasting him to the actual Good Guys. Empathy and compassion, caring for others--those aren't weaknesses!
But if your goal is ruthlessly destroying everything in the universe for your own power, then yeah, they would be.
And of course, Catra does think her connections to others is what makes her weak, at this point in the story.
Tumblr media
augh
"Now that I know about She-Ra and the weapon, what purpose do I have for you? Your little ploy of parsing out information like a bartering chip was never going to last long out here... I see all. I know all. But fear not. I have great plans for you. Every part of the machine is of value. Even you...little sister."
AAUGH
(and that's why the rating for this show warns for "fear" lol)
Tumblr media
And then Adora has one of her weird dreams about She-Ra and shattering the sword but while awake, and clearly it pains her--and then she passes out, end of episode.
Anyway I managed to make it all fit in one post but only barely, I had to go back and delete a few, lol
TBH I should probably just assume these are all gonna be two-parters, there's so much plot.

“I’m loyal, that’s my whole thing.” - Scorpia, Season 4 Episode 6, Princess Scorpia
“Everything they taught us in the Horde about loyalty is meaningless” - Lonnie, Season 4 Episode 5, Protocol
Rewatching Season 4, I just finished Princess Scorpia. This is an episode that has always stuck with me, especially the A plot of Scorpia realizing how badly Catra has treated her and everyone else and deciding to leave. One thing I’ve been thinking about since I finished the series, though, is what this episode is telling us on a larger level. Looking beyond the character arcs and more at this show’s larger themes and message. Because this show is very much a show that says things, made by people who believe them. That earnestness and depth is one reason I keep coming back to it.
Tumblr media
In the pull-quote above, and throughout the episode and before it, Scorpia defines herself in terms of loyalty. It is her identity - as she says, that’s what Scorpions do, they’re loyal. Her actions for three and a half seasons bear this out. When she first shows up, she tries to position herself as Catra’s new best friend, the one who won’t leave her and will stick by her no matter what. And that’s what she does, until this episode. She sticks by Catra through Catra’s increasingly villainous plots and erratic behavior. But she doesn’t just stick around. Until the portal, she barely contradicts Catra, and even afterwards, does so only furtively and immediately backs away as soon as Catra pushes back. For more than a year of show time, Scorpia has not just stood by Catra, or supported her, she’s actively assisted her in her most villainous and destructive acts. Scorpia is fighting by Catra’s side, eagerly carrying out her orders, and doing her utmost to see that Catra succeeds. But her loyalty goes beyond this practical help. Because for all that Catra loudly declares that she doesn’t need a new best friend, she consistently seeks out connection throughout the show, even when she’s at her most isolated in season 4. She needs moral support, and connection, and to know that she isn’t alone. Scorpia provides that, and keeps Catra going. Though Scropia isn’t initiating Catra’s various misdeeds, she’s assisting and supporting Catra throughout. On a personal, psychological level, the only word that seems adequate for this is ‘ennabling’ - Scorpia, sweet as she is, is Catra’s enabler. We see in the next few episodes what happens when Catra doesn’t have Scorpia’s support - she breaks down, and realizes that her actions really do have consequences, and that the affection she took for granted for so many years is something she can’t live without. But as long as Scorpia’s still around, Catra can’t make that realization.
Now I’m not going to say that Scorpia is morally culpable for Catra’s own actions. She’s not. Catra is solely responsible for her various betrayals, manipulations, violent outbursts and assorted murder attempts against...most of the rest of the cast (though being raised by Shadow Weaver sure as shit is a mitigating factor). But while Catra is obviously being a bad friend to Scorpia throughout, Scorpia isn’t actually being as supportive or helpful to Catra as she thinks, because Catra doesn’t actually need unconditional support, she needs people to be honest with her and express to her how she’s hurting them. She needs people who will stand up for themselves just as she needs to take responsibility for her own actions. This is part of why she and Adora have such a healthy dynamic in season 5 - Adora doesn’t take her crap, and Catra takes responsibility for her crap.
However, Scorpia -is- responsible for her own actions. And as I said above, she’s been with Catra every step of the way as Catra has attacked just about everyone and made war on Etheria. On a larger, political level, Scorpia is a willing participant in upholding the Horde’s oppressive system, and executing a war of aggression and colonization against innocent people. Speaking of colonization, perversely, she’s loyal to the very organization that dispossessed her and literally stole her birthright, then discarded it like a useless trinket when it was no longer useful to them. No one ever suggests ‘why don’t we let Scorpia connect with ~her runestone~’ until Glimmer does (and Glimmer’s motivations and arguments aren’t exactly forthright). Scorpia’s loyalty makes her an accomplice in her own oppression (like a bunch of the themes in this show there’s some interesting post-colonial stuff that the show doesn’t fully explore, probably because Noelle and the crew felt self-conscious about telling a post colonial story, or just didn’t know where to go with it). Interestingly, Scorpia’s loyalty to the Horde here parallels her loyalty to Catra, which has made her completely disregard her own wellbeing, which is the most obvious take away from the episode.
But I would argue that everything above shows that for Scorpia loyalty has been a way of avoiding developing her own moral compass. Scorpia repeatedly shoves aside questions of right or wrong in favor of being loyal to her friends and to the Horde. Loyalty has made Scorpia not only willing to accept her own mistreatment, but to willingly mistreat others, and to keep herself from asking any hard questions about what she’s doing or why. This is despite the fact that Scorpia is, by inclination, an incredibly gentle, kind and compassionate person. She’s willing to silence the best parts of her nature out of loyalty to Catra and the Horde. In the end, she also commits acts of violence and perpetuates the oppression of Etheria. And this is so insightful, because we see this sort of thing in our world all the time. So many oppressive institutions depend upon the loyalty of their members to keep them ‘just following orders’; so many abusive systems depend upon loyalty to stifle dissent and silence potential whistleblowers before they even speak. We see this in some of the most oppressive institutions and the worst scandals in our own society, and looking back through human history we see it in some of our nation’s and our species' most infamous crimes.
And when we look at the Horde as a system that Hordak has built in imitation of his elder brother’s empire, we see just how central loyalty is an ethos. Hordak himself is motivated entirely by loyalty to Prime - being a former clone, he spends the entire series not fully capable of accepting himself as an autonomous being (even when he acts like one and enjoys it, there’s some fucked up religious shit there that I won’t get into). He seems to have instilled this in his followers. The Horde Trio, Catra and Scorpia all hold loyalty as one of their highest values. Catra clings to it as her biggest accusation against Adora - that she was disloyal, as expressed in Catra’s perception that Adora broke her promise and abandoned her. Loyalty keeps the Horde Trio together and fighting for the Horde, and Scorpia with Catra. I think we can read between the lines and say the Horde runs on loyalty (as well as fear) and this is a very insightful portrayal of oppressive military and paramilitary institutions like armies of conquest and occupation and other instruments of state violence.
There’s another, related way of looking at how a sole reliance on loyalty as a moral framework has stunted Scorpia’s moral growth, and I think that brings together both the ways that it makes Scorpia willing to accept her mistreatment and participate in the mistreatment of others. Namely, loyalty in the Horde style isn’t just sticking with someone or something, but subsuming your own will into theirs. Following orders. Supporting your friend in what they do no matter what. Whatever you call it, it’s about turning off your own self - your self preservation, your self respect, your conscience, whatever other things you value - and just going along with what the person or institution you are loyal to wants you to do. And this is where Horde loyalty goes full circle, back to its origin - Horde Prime, the narcissistic self-made god who wishes to control or destroy everything that is not himself. Loyalty as Hordak conceived of it and as the Horde believes in it is a reflection of Prime's absolute control over all his domain.
In a way, self-determination is one of this show’s highest values (together with love). It’s at the heart of Adora’s 5-season, 3 year struggle to become her own woman and her own hero as she shrugs off one imposed destiny and then another and finally embraces what she wants. In a more negative form, it’s at the heart of Catra’s arc, as she finally accepts responsibility for her own actions and their consequences and starts working to make a world that she actually wants to live in, as well as admit to herself that what she really wants is love. And I could go on. This self-determination is existentially, obviously threatened by Prime chipping people, but it is also stunted by horde-style loyalty that demands unquestioning support and obedience.
Tumblr media
Both the Horde Trio and Scorpia reject the Horde’s ideal of loyalty and walk away, but I think it’s interesting how they do it. Neither rejects loyalty entirely (not on the way Adora does) - the Trio, realistically, remain loyal to each other and simply walk away and walk out of the war (this might save their lives), joining the other disillusioned cynics in the Crimson Wastes. They reject loyalty to the horde and embrace a more supportive and respectful form of loyalty to each other. Scorpia leaves, but she actually comes to her crisis and makes her decision out of loyalty, and because it’s clear that her loyalty isn’t returned. The immediate situation - loyalty to Emily and Entrapta’s memory on one hand and Catra’s orders on the others - creates the conflict between loyalties that forces Scorpia to actually make her own choice rather than deferring to Catra. But she also reflects how Catra betrayed her loyalty to Entrapta, and thus how all of her friends’ loyalty to Catra is not returned. This is another point about horde-style loyalty - it’s one way - Hordak or Catra will demand your loyalty, but they feel no obligation to return it, which reflects Prime’s view of every other being in the universe as disposable. It’s only when she’s with the Princesses that Scorpia starts to find a new moral center, though sticking up for and protecting her friends remains important to her. In neither case, though, are these kinds of loyalty coming at the cost of either the Trio or Scorpia’s autonomy or ability to make moral choices of their own. In the very next episode, she says she wants to 'be A good friend' which is how the Princesses typically describe sticking together, which is a much more active and holistic concept than 'loyalty'. Scorpia confesses that she doesn't even know how, but she wants to learn and thinks the princesses can teach her.
Tumblr media
There's another interesting counterexample to Horde Loyalty. Adora repeatedly breaks with the people around her to do what is right. First she leaves the Horde, then walks away from Catra by stages when it is clear that Catra is going to continue to harm other people and Etheria. Then she walks away from Glimmer, defies Light Hope and breaks loyalty with her supposed destiny and purposes as well as loyalty to the homelans she has never known. By season 5, Adora is loyal only to herself and the people she cares about, but she isn't constraining her will to anyone else's. For all that she seems like a rule follower Adora has a rebellious streak a mile wide, and she will do what is right, no matter what. This is what allows her to save the universe 3 times.
So the show’s argument is that loyalty is not a good moral framework to base all of our actions around. I don’t think it goes so far as saying that loyalty has no place in our ethics (being a good friend, which is such a huge part of the show, certainly includes loyalty, especially sticking with people when the going gets tough), but the show stresses time and again that being loyal to something or someone shouldn’t make you disregard yourself and what you think is right. Because it’s only by living out our own values and taking responsibility for our own actions that we can come into our own as moral beings. Moreover, if we insist on maintaining loyalty to institutions that oppress us and others, we can’t dismantle the systems of oppression that are holding us and other people down. (Yes, this is a pretty radical message, but I suspect that Noelle is some kind of anarchist? Anyway, it’s a thing.)
Okay, so that’s what I, a 35 year old, get from this kids show. I think it’s also worth pointing out that this lesson applies to younger viewers too, in their most immediate lives. Younger viewers will have had friends who didn’t treat them well, or might not have treated other people well, and who might have pressured them into participating in the mistreatment of others (this is kind of how bullying works a lot of the time). I think it’s important that younger viewers see how being a good friend never means disrespecting yourself or other people and it means a lot to me that She-Ra shows this in such a nuanced and realistic way.
