So I started a second run of Baldur's Gate 3 this week. To no one's surprise whatsoever, I decided to throw my Niamh Cousland into the mix mostly with the hope that it would help nudge my muse into letting me write more. I'm also playing with mods on for this run, which explains why Niamh and her crew have access to armor and weapons not normally seen this early in the game.
As expected, she is a Storm Sorcerer with a Sage background whose expertise lies in both history and the arcane. I've often mentioned that if Niamh hadn't spent much of her life imprisoned as a mage in Kinloch Hold per her canon Dragon Age worldstate, she'd likely thrive as a scholar of some sort. Honestly, you can't tell me she wouldn't just love immersing herself in all that knowledge.
Like, I can see her getting a little smile on her face when someone mentions some obscure thing in conversation that she immediately has the context for or just idly noticing something about the other person (a pin on their outfit for instance) and being internally like, "Oh, I know exactly whom you work for." And from there, she can just work them over until she gets the answers she needs with little to no violence involved even in some of the most tense situations, much to the continual bemusement of some of the members of her party.
Them: HOW?!
Niamh: [blinks] I asked?
She's quite charismatic for being someone so soft-spoken. 🤣
In keeping with her Necromancer specialization in Inquisition, she also has necromantic abilities, such as speaking with the dead. Rather useful for getting clues that would've otherwise left others at a dead end (pun intended) even if it did startle her companions the first few times she did it. She's very respectful about the whole thing though. She gives them a burial afterward with the proper funeral rites.
Of course, while being remarkably intelligent, that's not to say that she doesn't get herself into trouble, especially when her curiosity gets the better of her. For instance, she managed to get herself into some hidden laboratory that had a tome bound in human skin sealed inside a booby-trapped room...
Yeah, she probably makes any lover of hers go grey so quickly with antics like that.
Speaking of which, she's romancing Shadowheart. 😌 Considering the parallels between her and Dragon Age's Leliana, it was no surprise that I was going to pick her. 😂
But, yes, Niamh's having a grand ol' time in Faerun while also looking like she and her companions never got out of their Hot Topic phase.

✨weekly(ish) fic roundup✨
another round of fics I found especially good reads, as @little--abyss and I were talking about secondary curation recently! please check these out and leave a comment and kudos for the wonderful authors.
Assassin’s Creed
The White Aster of Masyaf - alaïr ibn-la’ahad/desmond miles, nsfw complete
And, instead of dying after using the device back in the Grand Temple, Desmond now had first-row seat in the tragic play that was Altaïr’s life in the Levantine Brotherhood.
Oh. And he gets to play the part of the doomed younger brother of Malik Al-Sayf, Kadar Al-Sayf.
BNHA
Oracle - midoriya izuku/shinsou hitoshi wip
Midoriya Izuku always wanted to have a quirk, to be a hero, to make a change.
Until he realizes he did do all that once, a lifetime ago, and paid for it with his life.
(In which Izuku's quirk allows him to remember his past life and it becomes his driving force to become a hero and mend the mistakes of the people from his past.)
Death Note
no man is worth dying for - gen wip with self-insert amane misa
Would there be consequences? Yes. Was it selfish? Perhaps. Did she care? No, because she refuses to lay there motionlessly and let herself die for a man whose God-complex got out of control.
Amane Misa or not, voices in her head or not, she was doing this reincarnation thing her way.
Dragon Age
FIRE IN HER MOUTH - female inquisitor/cassandra pentaghast wip
Former Ostwick Mage Olivia comes from a life of disturbing secrets and devastating loss. Once the daughter of an up-and-coming Orlesian house, her abilities led to a life of ostracized irrelevance to both her nation and her family. Years later, tensions in Thedas between Mages and Andrastian Orders have come to a head. The perfect setting, it seems, for a corrupted Tevinter Magister to stake his claim of chaos. By virtue of rotten luck Olivia finds herself thrust in his path, imbuing her with magic beyond her imagination. Now, she must learn to balance her own hunger for justice with those of the world's most mistreated, as leader of the reborn Inquisition.
Ithelan - male lavellan/omc, oc-insert wip
A struggling college student finds himself dropped in a dungeon in the thick of all things Inquisition with no memory of how he got there.  Now he has pointed ears and too many tattoos and maybe has the chance to help.  He has no idea what he's doing but he loves Thedas, and maybe Thedas will love him too.
Lyrium Addled - anders/fenris soulbond wip
After a desperate healing attempt goes haywire, Anders and Fenris try to get to the bottom of what caused the chaotic reaction. Between the phantom pains from non-existent wounds, and the sudden concern for each other's safety, they find themselves with an abundance of questions and nobody to answer them.
Not Another Dragon Age FanFic (The Lone Wolf Cries) - male lavellan/solas wip
Kieran finds himself suddenly transported to Thedas, and vows to keep a close eye on the Dread Wolf to stop him from betraying them once again.
As he finds out, a 'close eye' unfortunately means actually being close - and it doesn't help that the game's timeline is changing, either.
Over the Sea to the Clouds Above - female cousland-as-inquisitor/leliana wip, an absolute delight to read so far
Because she loved her sister dearly, Niamh set aside her own happiness, watching from afar as Leliana fell for another. However, with Corypheus threatening to cast ruin upon the world, is it possible for her to reveal the truth of her own heart before it’s too late?
Sang a Lady Radiant - solas/ofc, male trevelyan/ofc, oc-insert wip
Ollie doesn't know why she ended up in Thedas, but she wants it to be a better world when she leaves, one way or another. She just has to figure out how to work around Solas and the Inquisition itself.
The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Ellana Lavellan, Mage. - solas/ofc, oc-insert wip
Sweat, blood, and tears. Literally years of preparation, and here she was, at the foot of the mountain path that led up to Haven, while an explosion shook the world and tore a hole into the Beyond.
"Fenedhis."
MCU
Adjustments - bucky barnes/tony stark wip
After the battle at the Triskelion, the Winter Soldier is taken into Avenger's custody and brought to New York.  Slowly the extent to which HYDRA had broken the soldier is revealed. Bucky Barnes' recovery will be long and arduous the outcome of which is uncertain.
With his parent's murderer living under his roof, Tony Stark faces an entirely different problem, one he intents to solve his way.
By fixing the broken soldier.
Naruto
bees don't buzz during an eclipse - gen wip
The thing is, the summoning jutsu isn’t actually that hard.
And little academy student Sakura, young and clanless and desperate to prove the world that she’s bigger than her forehead, is also friends with Ino, clan heir with connections to the Nara. She watches Shikaku summon a deer once, and an idea turns in her brain.
It’s not her fault nobody told her the technique wasn’t for pre-genin.
for the caged bird sings of freedom - gen wip
Hyuuga Hinata dies four years after the Fourth Shinobi War, to protect her Hokage.
She wakes up ten years in the past, the day before Graduation, the day before the spar that would seal her fate as the family disappointment and Hanabi's as the next Clan Head.
She makes changes.
One Piece
so much like stars - law/luffy/zoro complete
Stargazing and snow, festivals and dreams, and the quiet change in the dynamic between Law, Luffy, and Zoro during a few cold nights on the way to Zou.
The Sandman
a lucky break(out) - dream/hob gadling, complete
Hob acquires a familiar ruby at an antiquities sale. Said ruby summons something else into his home as well.

Prompt Me, I Dare You
Hello, darlings - it is I, the Niamh behind this messy blog that once had a theme and now just amuses me and hopefully others.
What do you need to know? Well, I write (in theory), I hate my job, and I am forever on the search for that one piece of media that will hold my attention long enough to write another epic long-fic like I've done in the past. I am very much up for AUs and explorations of character through non-canon scenarios.
That said, I am always open for prompts, so I thought I'd pin a collection of lists and a link to my active OCs post and hope for the best. We live in hope, right?
The Prompt Lists
Kissing Prompts
Oblivious Idiots In Love
Friends With Benefits (SFW) Starters

Although I have been toying with the idea of  Anora and Fergus  having a younger daughter, Princess Lenore, who’s the heir apparent to the Teyrn.
And of having Cecily Cousland survive the war, not as a warden, but as Rendon Howe’s prisoner. She emerges heavily disfigured and initially frail from her mistreatment, making her somewhat of a social pariah when she first attempts to rejoin society. People like her better as a theoretical object of pity than as a living person.
Eventually, however (and after great conflict first), she marries Nathaniel Howe, her childhood crush, who is currently ruling Amaranthine in the name of Niamh Amell’s Wardens. She refuses any title upon her marriage (since even Nathaniel technically rules only on behalf of his Order) and instead forms her own order of Knights largely recruited from Blight veterans.
However, it’s tacitly understood by the populace that the Princess Lenore will claim Amaranthine as her aunt’s heir whenever the time comes for her to become Teyrna, thus returning rulership to Fereldan from the hands of the Wardens. (Although the Wardens will be allowed to keep a significant presence and holdings in the city.) That’s actually part of Niamh and Nathaniel’s plan to avoid another Sophia Dryden type situation.
The issue being that around the time of the mage rebellion, Princess Lenore starts exhibiting magic. Having heard reports of both the results of Connor being hidden from the Circle and the absolute slaughter of Kinloch Hold (not to mention the Annulment of several Circles during the war), Fergus and Anora panic, uncertain what to do. They genuinely love their daughter and are afraid for her.
Anora tries to send for Niamh, but at the time, no one can find her. Cecily arranges for Lenore to spend time under the care of a Warden mage in Amaranthine, under the guise of learning from her Aunt, but it’s part of why Anora invites the rebel mages to Redcliffe.
It also makes her considerably more infuriated by the result of that decision, because “joining hands with a Tevinter Magister” absolutely does not provide the example she needs to prove that her daughter can live safely outside a Circle.

Note
On a scale of 1-10, ten being representative of her being very much in need of it, how much does Nimah want to nap for a whole day or at the very least sleep in longer than normal? It just occurred to me that if Niamh is getting up pretty early to exercise and get ready for meetings and such, she must be rising with the first rays of sun.
Well, the answer would just depend on how well her day is going if I'm being completely honest. 😂
Niamh is a pretty obvious workaholic, but she's always had a tendency to rise with the dawn. As restrictive as the Circle can be, I somehow doubt sleeping in would be encouraged, so her early bird ways might actually be a byproduct of that.
When she became a nomadic apostate living overseas post-Blight, that never really changed. Rising with the sun meant she had more daylight with which to travel by and consequently more distance to put between herself and anyone who might have been pursuing her.
Now that she's more or less accepted her role as Inquisitor (and all the responsibilities associated with it), getting up that early does feel more difficult that it used to be. She has meetings to attend with either her War Council or visiting dignitaries, brainstorm ideas about how to best outmaneuver their enemies, check on the overall well-being of those around her, and then document any changes to the Anchor.
So, on a fairly uneventful day, I'd say she's at a four. If she has to deal with any annoying or troublesome dignitaries, it goes up to a six or seven depending on how vexing they are.
Overall, Niamh's generally fine, but believe me when I say she's going to hit ten at mach speed in the next chapter... 😅

The Wardens
I have two ‘World States’ for the Wardens among my muses, and the characters in one of them all tie together.
To start with, Kiara Amell is my Default Warden-Commander. She had Alistair perform the ritual. I’ll make a full list of all of her choices later, but her interactions are seperate from the second group.
The second group is based off a fanfic I never finished and it’s ‘The Mage, the Pickpocket, and the Whore’. Aeden Cousland and one of his “personal guards” Beatrice join the Grey Wardens, picking up Niamh Surana on their journey to Ostagar. Daveth survives the Joining in this AU, and those four, along Alistair, all survive the battle and traverse Fereldan to stop the Blight.
Aeden, being a noble, is the one officially recognized as ‘The Hero of Fereldan’, while Beatrice, Daveth, and Niamh are kind of... Forgotten about because their backgrounds aren’t as good for stories.
The AU actually had all of the Origins surviving, and in it Kiara was a circle mage that can be recruited alongside Wynne if Jowan is spared. [If people are ever interested, I might also add Brosca, Aeducan, and Tabris, but not at the moment.]
They can be interacted with as individuals or as a group-canon, where interactions with one of the group is canon among them all. They’re generally all Wardens, though not as famous as the Hero of Fereldan.

OC 3 Things Meme
I’ve been tagged by several people, but I got swamped the past few weeks and have forgotten the mentions. My most recent tag was @gremlinquisitor and I figure it’s about time for me to do it. Thank you for the tag, friend!
Three things I first think of when I think of my OCs:
Lucia Amell: frost, steel, campfires
Elissa Cousland: rose gold, feather pillows, sunlight
Niamh Lavellan: flames, emeralds, trees
And since I believe a lot of my usual tags have already done this, I’m just going to say if anyone sees this and wants to do it, you have been tagged by me officially. I’m serious .@ me when you do it so I can learn about your OCs!

@tideveil asked: “this place isn’t safe for either of us, we need to leave.” for niamh
Tumblr media
her first reaction is to argue, to push that they could still save them if they could only just go back. a glance back down the tunnel and towards the fading glow of the kitchen reminded her that that wasn’t a good idea. the couslands were excellent fighters, but they weren’t invincible. they couldn’t fight off the hundreds of men that howe had brought along with him, no matter how determined that they were. she gritted her teeth against the sharp words, shifting her shoulders into a more determined set. “you’re right,” she finally muttered. “we need to keep moving. we’ve got to get to fergus.” maker’s breath, she was not looking forward to breaking the news to him.

@alterac hello welcome to my tedtalk
my favorite son is malcolm cousland. hes never had to do anything dangerous in his whole darn life. he didn’t even climb trees as a kid. he does practice swordfighting, but he’s terrible in battle at first because he doesn’t know how to handle an opponent who is actually trying to kill him. he collected insects as a hobby until all his dead bugs got lost in the attack on highever. morrigan scares him shitless, but after she leaves, he never stops thinking about the fact that he’s got a little son out there somewhere. he eventually meets kieran at skyhold and cries a lot.
cordelia aeducan named her dog trian after her brother as a weird combination of memorial and sick joke. she’s intensely jealous of alistair’s position to take the throne, when she lost her own right to orzammar’s, but she only ever brings it up as a joke. her first week on the surface, she discovered sunburns and didn’t take off her helmet during the day for a very long time afterwards. she still feels some resentment towards the sun. her favorite thing in the entire world is slicing a darkspawn to pieces with her sword.
flora brosca spends most of her time during the blight trying to heal from her time in the carta, relieved to be doing something noble and good for once. she has severe moral difficulties killing wolves that attack the party because they’re pretty much dogs. she listens to leliana recite the chant over and over again, trying to feel less afraid because she’s so close to death, but never allowed to be reassured that she was going to go back to the stone when she died, but maybe the maker will take her in.
eoin mahariel has had a tough time getting past his bf getting eaten by a creepy mirror, but he’s trying. he and leliana hit it off right away bc of their love of storytelling, swapping folklore and history but also gently correcting each other about details. he’s not particularly concerned by individual shemlin, and he’s definitely okay w very, very pretty, angry human witches.
niamh tabris is a gangly, freckley bundle of rage. she won’t take her wedding dress off for months, until she gets an infection from the dirty fabric being stuck to a wound, and zevran coaxes her into something cleaner he found on a dead guy. she will kill anyone given so much as half a reason. she spends every coin she can on pretty shiny things for morrigan, but is sickened by the idea of asking alistair to take part in the ritual and takes the final hit to the archdemon herself.
jolene surana has been in the tower too long to remember anything before that. she prefers practical application of magic to study, and ends up dabbling in blood magic when she feels its necessary. she’s average sized by human standards, but self conscious about being a little wider than elves usually are. she’s happiest sitting by the fire, laughing, sandwiched safely between leliana and alistair. she WILL fight arl eamon with her bare hands.
leon amell is a quiet guy who has mixed feelings about the circle and then isn’t really sure what to when he’s out of it. he initially can’t make food or fight very well or make friends on his own or figure out how buying things works. he falls in love painfully easily, mostly with people who will never reciprocate. one time he hit himself in the achilles tendon with his own staff during a battle.
