Someone You Can Build A Nest In:
I have never once annotated a book before, but I was struck with the inspiration while reading this one. I planned to only annotate when something caught my attention, and well... it got out of control pretty fast.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was a beautiful Sapphic ACE horrormantasy told from the POV of the monster Shesheshen. Parts of the story are cozy, but it also contains graphic body horror/gore throughout and massive family abuse with broken characters. If you are a fan of tentacle, shape-shifting inhuman monsters, check it out!
Edit: I forgot to include mentions of oviposition and vore. Which I love but I know is not everyone's cup of tea

Someone You Can Build a Nest In review
Tumblr media
5/5 stars Recommended if you like: fantasy, light horror, monster main characters, LGBTQ+ characters
Big thanks to Netgalley, DAW, and the author for an ARC in exchange for an honest review!
TW: gore, animal cruelty, abuse
I definitely thought this was a novella going into this and didn't realize it wasn't until I got past all the acknowledgements, ARC stuff, and table of contents and the book was still on 1%. Most of the horror I read is in novella format, so I was a little worried I was going to end up with more than I'd bargained for, but luckily that wasn't the case!
This book definitely has gore in it, at times quite a bit, but I wouldn't really classify this as a gorey novel and, in that same vein, while Shesheshen is a monster and devours people, I wouldn't classify this book as 'horror' necessarily. I suppose it is somewhat in the same vein as The Salt Grows Heavy, though Shesheshen and the mermaid are very different. I actually thought some of the scenes of Shesheshen eating were funny at times, she has an interesting outlook to things that can be humorous.
Shesheshen herself is the only one of her kind that she knows. Her mother was killed when she was young and she devoured her siblings before they could devour her and has lived in monster solitude ever since. It's clear that her early life has a great impact on her since she wants to find someone to build a nest in who will be a better parent than her father was (and whom she views as just a setting, albeit a nice nest), how she wants to be able to be there for her offspring, and how she questions some things about her own existence since she had no one to teach her otherwise. I found Shesheshen to be interesting, particularly in the way that she can absorb items around her and utilize them to build her body's structure.
Despite being a 'monster,' Shesheshen clearly has empathy and feelings. Her best friend is a blue bear named Blueberry and the two are obviously close and Shesheshen definitely loves her. Likewise, she's able to recognize the hypocrisy of humans calling her a monster while killing what- and whoever they feel and being mean to one another. Shesheshen is also drawn to Homily's kindness and it quickly becomes clear that she has a strong protective streak when it comes to the people and things she cares about.
Homily is depicted as kindhearted and even expresses similar sentiments about hunting animals and monsters that Shesheshen does. These two are two of the things that most strongly draw Shesheshen to her. But Homily has also been through some shit and has a hard time around people as well as the tendency to let people hurt her, either in a "go along to get along" kind of way or because she thinks she deserves it. Despite this, Homily also has a strong protective streak and protects Shesheshen and others on multiple occasions.
While not a main character, I have to give a shoutout to Laurent, whom I find hilarious. May he be happily terrorized for the rest of his days.
I enjoyed reading about Shesheshen's attempts to stay close to Homily, and confess that she's the 'monster' who Homily thinks cursed her family (but definitely didn't), and how major hijinks ensue as a result of this decision. Shesheshen definitely has gotten herself into a situation here and it was funny to read her desperately attempting to outmaneuver the humans trying to hunt her down. She shows some remarkable cunning, and it's clear she has a good mind for strategy. But I did find her attempts to get out of the situation without devouring the whole hunting party to be quite hilarious.
While this is ostensibly a humorous story about a queer monster falling in love with a human, this book also tackles themes like abuse and the cycle of abuse. Shesheshen has suffered at the hands of humans who have come to kill her, which is one kind of abuse, but Homily has suffered through having a truly demonic set of family members who seem to delight in harming her, both physically and emotionally. A large part of this story is about healing from that and not falling into the same cycles, wittingly or unwittingly.
Overall I enjoyed this book and found it to be fairly light-hearted, despite its contents. There is some gore, but it's not too bad, and Shesheshen's 'monster' shenanigans are done very matter-of-factly and with a great deal of attention paid toward whether Homily would think it too weird.

Fall 2023 Anime Review
The 24 episodes series this season are popping off. Honestly one of the better seasons for anime that we've had in a few years.
Tumblr media
Frieren: Beyond Journey's End (1/2) - 16/28 Episodes This show almost feels like a fever dream. There's a fuzziness to the animation style that also gives it a ghibli vibe. Definitely one of the more memorable and important fantasy series out there. It has something about it that gives it more of a deeper meaning than other series and definitely feels like each episode is it's own piece of a puzzle. 10/10 - Masterpiece
Tumblr media
The Apothecary Diaries (1/2) - 12/24 Episodes I wasn't sure what to expect from this series but I thoroughly enjoy it so far. I ended up going ahead and reading the manga because I wanted more content. Just a fun medical mystery type show with some goofy scenes and bits of almost romance? Looking forward to more episodes in the future. 8.5/10 - Very Good +
Tumblr media
Shangri La Frontier (1/2) - 12/25 Episodes I genuinely enjoy this series. It does have a bit of an SAO vibe initially but it moves past that real quick. I think it's one of the more enjoyable series for people who actually enjoy and appreciate video games. Overall, the game itself just looks like a lot of fun and you can tell the mc is enjoying it too. 8/10 - Very Good
Tumblr media
Shy - 12 Episodes I don't know why people aren't into this series. I think it would definitely have done better had it come out during the peak of hero shows but it still hits. I think it's a really well done story and the animations are also satisfying. Reminds me a little of Justice League or Young Justice. Honestly a fun watch. 8/10 - Very Good
Tumblr media
SpyxFamily - Season 2 - 12 Episodes This show never disappoints. Each episodes is just as entertaining as the first season and I don't feel like a single episode has been wasted so far. I'm still very much looking forward to future content. 8.5/10 - Very Good+ Dr. Stone - Season 3 - 11 Episodes For some reason I always seem to put off watching this series but as soon as I get into it, it's so worth it. Definitely still holding up to the pilot season and I'm just as stoked for future seasons. Solid consistency. 8/10 - Very Good The Eminence In Shadow - Season 2 - 12 Episodes This had such a banger first season. Definitely just a fun show for me that I try not to look into too much when watching. Has straight forward fun protagonist and the story hasn't flopped so far. 7.5/10 - Good+ Ron Kamonohashi's Forbidden Deductions - 13 Episodes The first few episodes come off as a cheesy Sherlock spoof but it definitely takes off on the later cases. It becomes less overall about the cases but the combo of the two and the different situations they end up in. By the end of the season I felt like the cases they worked were fun and interesting and I liked the character building. 7/10 - Good My Daughter Left the Nest and Returned an S-rank Adventurer I gave this 3 episodes. Honestly I think ending it at episode 3 was fine.. The story feels weak but it's a nice short story if you watch the first 3 episodes and don't care the whole demon lord plot. 5/10 - Average The Rising of Shield Hero - Season 3 - 12 Episodes I got through about 4 episodes and really enjoyed it and then it just went downhill. It turned into some kind of monster raising anime with a side of shield hero. I initially dropped it but decided to come back and finish it because i'm still attached to the overaching story for some reason. I found the last 3 episodes were decent and did add to the overall story but I still had such a rough time in the first 3/4. 4.5/10 - Less than Average Goblin Slayer - Season 2 - 12 Episodes I was so disappointed by this show. I honestly can't remember how the first season ended but I don't feel like it needed this season. Felt much more like the standard harem isekai with very little interesting aspects to the story. Not to mention the whole elf incest story line they threw in there. Definitely won't be coming back for a 3rd season. Had a really hard time getting through this one. 3.5/10 - Bad/Very Bad

Greenland fucked me up bro
Movie: Greenland [2020]
Spoilers under the cut plus swearing cw
OHHHH MY FUCKING GOD
Character notes: "tell Santa I'm still upset at him for the coal." whoever wrote Ali's father in this movie deserves a raise Jesus Christ. I love the way how everyone is generally characterized and how You can tell everyone's morals/true colors show during a life ending/world ending event. And even just before The asteroid is going to hit, you can still see John trying to save the pilot
Movie notes: holy shit they did not hold back. They truly showed us every guy wrenching detail and didn't spare us the experience of society before the world ends. There is some *very* distressing scenes though.
Other: I like the whole "Life flashes before your eyes." Thing the movie has going on. First with showing us the family photos before John and Ali's marriage got rough, then as the movie goes on, actually flashing back to earlier times when Nathan was a kid, They especially do this in the plane when they're arriving to Greenland, and at the end of the movie.
Another thing is when they're actually on the plane and are arriving to Greenland. Compared to the state that everything else is in with everything on fire and chaos, Greenland looks relatively untouched. Cloudy skies, but they don't have a reddish hue to them from fires or smoke, and everything generally looks peaceful. Yada yada yada, insert something about Greenland being untouched representing the sanctuary they've been searching for the entire movie, yada yada. (Well at least until the plane crashes.)
okay cool if your reading this your at the end, congrats. If your a die-hard fan of apocalypse movies I think you would like this, Even though it's more focused on the emotional family aspect. So maybe if you like dramas, I would maybe recommend this?? But it has some very distressing scenes.
I have one general problem with this movie though. In the end, we find out that it's been 9 months since The asteroid impacted. And it stated earlier in the movie that Nathan is diabetic, and the nurse at the Fema camp only gave them a weeks worth of insulin and stuff. That means one of two things: 1. The bunkers do have insulin, and in a perfect scenario they could've just boarded the planes and went to the shelter. Or two, Nathan with somehow magically cured and let's be honest that's probably not the case.
I know there's some probably logical reason that Nathan got flagged even though they had The insulin at the shelters, like "oh we need health people to rebuild the world." Or "we need to save on supplies because we don't know anything about the situation" But it's not explained in the movie. It's just like "oh it's nine months later."

Horror/Romance: "Someone You Can Build a Nest In" by John Wiswell
Tumblr media
Cross-cultural relationships rely on clear communication and not making assumptions. Shesheshen, a blob monster, learns this when she realizes her new human girlfriend, Homily, doesn't consider laying your eggs in your partner so they may be eaten alive by your young...to be the logical goal of dating.
Somehow, as a reader, I'm with Shesheshen on this. Infest me, Mommy.
This is definitely a pick for queer readers with family trauma. Despite this book being about a ravenous blob-monster on the run, so much of the real drama and interest is about Homily's ruthless family, and how they have left scars on her past.
It's also a rather asexual romance, where the asexuality is not a point of tension, which I really appreciate.
Somehow, I found this book almost cozy. The horror definitely comes through in the end, but I was so much more invested in Homily and Shesheshen's romance and latching onto their every scrap of domestic bliss. I loved the end, and felt quite satisfied. There doesn't need to be more. It's just...nice. Very nice.

To be honest, I didn’t expect much from My Daughter Left the Nest and Returned an S-Rank Adventurer. I was interested in the show because of Hayamin voicing the MC. But to my surprise, I enjoyed the show more than I expected. It was a pretty cute story.
It’s a shame that the animation couldn’t keep up with its storytelling because the plot was quite interesting as the show progressed. I really liked Ange and Belgrieve. Their relationship was wholesome and sweet. It’s nice that we got to see their adventures separately too.
The ending ep felt quite abrupt though. Wish we had more eps to flesh out the supporting characters and the plot threads that were introduced.
Overall, it was a decent show that had potential!

Into the Eagle’s Nest
World War II and video games have gone together like peanut butter and chocolate during the medium’s existence. Interpretations of the historic war range from serious strategy games & detailed simulators to the high-flying fare of Wolfenstein 3D or the Call of Duty series. Interceptor Micros, a publishing studio riding the wave of British microcomputers, had their take with Into The Eagle’s Nest, released in 1987, on a host of computing platforms of the time. Its setup and pedigree had potential to be something quite thrilling, but the finished product leaves much to be desired.

the more i think about it the more angry i am getting over how much potential high guardian spice had for the rest of the story that we will never get to see because of the bigotry that crushed it.
like bro UGHHHH we could have had it all. i don’t even wanna talk about it bc the thing i wanna talk about is like THE spoiler of the entire thing. and i definitely recommend the show, as long as ur ready to be just as angry as i am that it will never be continued LMAO

Frustratingly Delightful! (4/5)
Word-play-ish parser my beloathed… (/jk) Through exploration and mini-puzzles are part of the game, its central mechanic relies on the player trying to find the word for a special command to navigate through the coded world. While the commands [help] and [hint] are not configured, the descriptions/responses of actions or discussions with the NPCs (and incidentally the name of the game) hint at what that word could be. I needed to restart the game a couple of times, because I kept being stuck in one room that required that command to exit it (and since I hadn't found it then, there was nothing else I could do). The game does advise you to restart and explore a different part of the world if your get stuck as well - so you can get another hint that would get you closer to the end. [I thankfully got some help from super-parser players, after going through a list of potential word and being super frustrated...] Even with the frustration of being forced to restart and getting stuck again and again, and trying way too many words, the game is still delightfully funny, especially in the responses from the game!

Viddying the Nasties | The Nesting (Weston, 1981)
Tumblr media
This review contains mild spoilers.
After Flesh Feast with Veronica Lake, this is the second movie I've watched this week that's featured the final screen performance of a Hollywood legend. Gloria Grahame, who appears here as a spectral figure who provides the key to the film's mystery, passed away from cancer the year this film was released. But I don't think this carries the same dismal air as the other movie. For one thing, and apologies if I'm being morbid, I don't think Grahame, despite her health issues, looks all that frail here. And the movie surrounding her is quite a bit less crude and impoverished than the one Lake found herself in. Grahame's screentime is limited but well used, the movie relying on her presence to ease us into the supernatural until it puts her front and centre to reveal her backstory. As far as final performances go, it's pretty respectable.
This is directed by Armand Weston, from whom I'd previously greatly enjoyed the porno-noir Expose Me, Lovely, and as far as mainstream efforts by porn directors go, Weston acquits himself pretty well. (Given that Weston's porn work from my experience has been pretty genre-oriented, this isn't too great a surprise.) There's some attractively shadowy cinematography, a couple of nice bloody shocks (which earned this a place on the Video Nasties list), a great looking house and an effective sense of atmosphere. I do think the movie has its flaws. Some of the visual ideas, in particular a conversation during the end reveal, are awkwardly realized. Some of the outdoor scenes are shot rather flatly, and one chase in particular lacks the tension or frantic pacing you'd hope for such a scene. And I do think the cast, outside of Grahame and John Carradine, who given the chance hams things up from his wheelchair or bed, could be a lot better.
Robin Groves as the heroine does not bring the necessary trepidation or interiority for her role and instead often comes off as annoyed or annoying, depending on the circumstances. But I found the presence of David Tabor as a sinister local to be especially off putting. I understand his character is supposed to be unpleasant, but I think of someone like Joe Spinnell, who can be unpleasant in ways conducive to our understanding of the character, and I think Tabor falls more in the "guy I want to get off the screen" category. During that chase scene, all I could think of was that his character just took a dump and didn't wash his hands, which while not a great experience for the heroine should he catch her, is not exactly the life or death stakes you'd want the viewer to feel. But anytime the movie moves inside that house, you get that nice creepy atmosphere kicking in, and sometimes that's all you need.
I'm always interested in how porn directors adapt to more mainstream efforts, and I do think Weston's porn background is evident in a few ways. The brothel flashbacks / dream sequences have a nice decadence and sexual charge that wouldn't feel out of place in a porno. (Honestly, you could change a few plot details here and the premise would probably would probably translate pretty well to porn.) But there's also the eventual reveal, where the brothel and the prostitutes working for it as shown to be the victims, not the perpetrators of evil. It can be tempting to read a metafictional angle into this, the brothel standing in for Weston's usual genre, and I'm not sure a director who hadn't worked in that genre would have brought this particular subversive angle to the material.
