My DMC oc and my take on Nero's mother/The lady in red. Her name is Julia De Bellona- an accomplished devil hunter and the former Supreme General of the Order of the Sword. Oh boy, this character, this character. Originally created her sometime when I was around 13 or 14 after playing the OG trilogy of games for the first time. She's changed a lot over the years and I honestly don't recall ever having worked this hard to develop a character before in my life LOL I haven't gotten everything written down yet, but I'm really proud of what I have managed to do.
Her wip TH profile can be found here. (Note- BIG WIP)
More Info under the cut. TW: for character death I guess?
Tumblr media
NAME: Julia De Bellona
GENDER: Female (She/Her)
AGE: Early Twenties @ TOD | Immortal
SPECIES: Human (Formerly. See picture above.), Artificial Demon (Currently)
AFFILIATION: The Order of the Sword (Formerly) |
OCCUPATION: Holy Knight (Formerly) | Ruler of the Underworld (Currently)
RANK: Supreme General (Formerly) | Queen (Currently)
Prior to the rise of Sanctus, Julia's family, The Bellona, ruled over Fortuna as Feudal Lords- a position entrusted to them by Sparda himself prior to his disappearance. Throughout the generations, their primary goal was to protect humanity from demonic threats- which earned the love of their people and eventually led to the founding of The Order of the Sword; an organization of knights equipped and trained to defeat their evil foes. Julia was born from this long, accomplished line of devil hunters; but her abilities far exceeded those of her ancestors and allowed her to become one of the greatest devil hunters of her age- despite the fact that for most of her life, she was only a mere human.
Compassionate, capable, and determined, Julia rose quickly through the ranks of the Order and was the youngest Supreme General the Order of the Sword had ever seen- but she handled the position with a wisdom that surpassed her years. Under her careful guard, Fortuna was at peace for many years. But shortly after her promotion, she would meet a mysterious stranger who would change her life forever.
Vergil, one of the sons of Sparda, traveled to Fortuna seeking information on the Order and its former ruler in his quest for power. They begin in opposition, but the cold man would eventually win Julia’s heart. Though her compassion and plea to live a life of peace by her side appealed to her lover’s long buried humanity, Vergil chose to cast it and her aside to continue on his journey. Though heartbroken by the loss- she soon discovered that he had left a part of himself with her forever in the form of a child- A son she named Nero.
The following is a rough outline of the rest of her story.
A few months after Nero’s birth, Julia learns of the emergence of the Temen-ni-gru, one of the many gateways to the underworld sealed by Sparda after the war between humans and devils ended. Remembering Vergil’s quest for power, she leaves Fourtuna to stop him herself, but by the time she arrives in the city the events of DMC 3 have already unfolded. Wanting answers, Julia learns from several frightened locals that a white-haired man running a mysterious shop was responsible for ending the threat. Curious and slightly hopeful, she makes her way to the newly named “Devil May Cry” and meets Dante, Vergil’s twin brother, for the first time.
Seeing the identical twin of her former lover is deeply off putting at first, but Dante doesn’t notice. He initially thinks she’s some kind of reporter when she asks for the story of what went on in the tower, and remains uncooperative until Julia successfully manages to bribe him with Pizza. He tells her everything but what she really wants to hear; but from their conversation Julia is able to piece together that the man who was responsible for the catastrophe died within the demon world.
After leaving the shop Julia decides to investigate the ruins of the Temen-ni-gru. While walking amongst the debris, numb with grief, she is surprised to discover the Yamato amongst the wreckage. After pulling it free, she remains there for several hours debating with herself on the wisdom of her next decision, but she eventually gives into temptation and uses the Yamato to travel to the demon world to search for Vergil herself.
Two long, brutal weeks full of fights and close calls with demons pass. Julia searched long and hard, but eventually, after she was unable to find any trace of him,  she was finally forced to admit Vergil was really gone. She retreats back into the human world using the Yamato and returns home.
Julia intermittently returns to the demon world to continue searching for Vergil. Almost a year later, she finds him (Or rather, finds Nelo Angelo) held captive and unresponsive. After a brief, but explosive battle with Mundas, Julia escapes with Vergil back to the human world.
This encounter is witnessed by Machiavelli, the creator of Nelo Angelo, who is immediately intrigued that a human would risk her life for a demon.
Uncertain how to awaken him, she seeks out Agnus and asks for his aid in helping Vergil.
A/N: studying Vergil in this timeframe is what gives Angus the inspiration to build the false angels.
Agnus betrays Julia by turning in all his discoveries (her possession of the Yamato, her apparent relationship with a demon) over to Sanctus. Who takes it upon himself to execute the “traitor”. In a cruel twist of fate, he stabs her with Vergil’s own sword. The blade is shattered by a sudden, mysterious surge of power. My personal hc is that just as the sword recognized Nero, the sword recognized Julia, and it shattering was due to it being forced to do something that went against such an important connection.
A/N: Explaining both how the Order manages to get their hands on the sword and why it's broken.
As Julia lays dying, Nelo Angelo/Vergil finally awakens. Recognizing Julia on some level, he does not like what he sees, and slaughters Sanctus’ terrified guards. Forcing the Vicar and Angus to flee for their lives.
With their enemies vanquished, Nelo Angelo/Vergil touches Julia’s face. But in that moment, Julia's thoughts are consumed by worry for Nero. And with her bit a strength, pleads with the Dark Knight to save their son before Sanctus finds him.
He obliged her last wish, taking an infant Nero from Julia’s home to the orphanage where Nero would grow up in.
A/N: Wrapped the crying boy up in his black cape before his departure. Staff of the orphanage would continue to call him Nero as a result.
Sanctus falsely frames Julia as a traitor to the people she had spent her life protecting- and Sanctus orders that all traces of her and her family be erased / never spoken of again. Explaining why she isn’t mentioned in game.
Julia’s body disappears afterwards/is never found by Sanctus. Debating, but my current thought is Nelo Angelo/Vergil took her to Machiavelli, whose spent the last 20+ years reviving her and turning her into the perfect demon. Knowing that she would be a Queen worth following.
A/N: Explaining that Machiavelli isn't dead, he's actually just been working on his Magnum opus this entire time.
After the events of DMC 5, Julia finally awakens and takes over the demon world in the absence of Urizen. She's lost most of her memory from her time as a human and doesn't realize how long it's been- but she recalls she has a son and that's in the human world, in a city called Fortuna, and is determined to find him-

It’s just a dance. (born from curiosity, from the thrill, from a pact.)
It’s just a dance. (that continued out of need.)
It’s just a dance. (,a need for intimacy, a need for warmth, a need to lead or to be lead.)
It’s just a dance. (,a need for an escape, a place to hide from the world that looks down on you.)
It’s just a dance. (fueled by hate, by frustration towards this unjust world that does care about your anger and your suffering.)
It’s just a dance. (, but not towards your partner. Never towards your partner.)
It’s just a dance. (where one can be vulnerable, be open, be safe.)
It’s just a dance. (that will have to end once the music stops, whether you’ll like it or not.)
It’s just a dance. (that will end in pain, unspoken words and broken promises.)
It’s just a dance. (, and the consolation that you can at least lie to yourself that it was nothing more.)
It’s just a dance.

Qianna: Character Rambling
Been thinking about this lady more and more for a while since I’ve been utterly obsessed with Devil May Cry (that teenage fangirlism hit back hard when I poked at DMC5 lmao), which is where she’s found a home in when it comes to day-dreaming. xD
As of now Qianna (sometimes also referred to as Qiqi [Kiki]) is a witch and devil hunter that had her soul forcefully infused with demon souls when she was a teen. This allows her to freely use magic without needing some sort of medium, rituals, or deals/contracts with demons. However, she has to continue to consume demon souls in order to continue using her magic because utilizing her abilities burns through the souls. Kinda basing my logic on the idea in Visions of V that an unhosted demon soul would die and disappear (thus why Griffon wanted to establish a contract with V). In Qiqi’s case, since the demons in question didn’t agree to use her as a host, their souls are kind of in a limbo while she holds onto them; they got a longer shelf-life than normal, but they do decay over time, especially when magic is being used.
Oh, also~ some of the magical abilities she is able to use depends on the specific type of demon soul she’s burning through, and they have special physical manifestations connected to that too. So like…if she’s using the soul of a Green Empusa, she’d be able to do things like healing and sustained hovering (maybe have green transparent wings or something), or a Riot soul would create claw gauntlets over her own arms and hands. It’d look pretty similar to Nero’s wings/arm things when he’s not in full DT mode. :3c I’m sure that means nothing.
Qianna isn’t…thrilled with this ability. Her mother forced it on her when she was young, thinking it’d be a good way for Qianna to have a fighting chance against the demons and other enemies that tend to harass their family line. Qiqi and her mother come from a long line of psychics and hunters that have been a thorn in many-a-paranormal-entity’s side. However the soul infusion shit just ends up making Qianna an even bigger target (all that demonic energy just attracts more to her).
I’m not yet sure how she and Vergil meet when they’re teenagers. One idea I had was Vergil sought her mother out for information or a way to hide his energy from demons that hunt him or soooomethiiiing? This part is fuzzy ‘cause I still am trying to get an idea of what the heck Vergil was doing from when his family was attacked to visiting Fortuna and DMC3 events. If someone wants to tell me any factoids I haven’t found out yet about Vergil’s childhood/teen years, feel free to ramble about it to me, or give me a heads up that it’s all just up to fan speculation at this point.
But anyway! Qianna isn’t a ball of sunshine, but she is a wise-ass (would she fit into the DMC universe if she wasn’t? lmao), so they get along about as well as you’d expect at first. Vergil spends a decent amount of time around her (he comes and goes like a stray cat) and, in his own dumbass stoic way, warms up to her presence. Their bond fully kicks off though when Vergil happens to drop by when Qianna’s mother is performing the spell to merge Qiqi’s soul with several demons’. Unfortunately, he shows up too late to force a stop to the ritual (once it starts, it’s too dangerous to the target of the spell to stop it), but once it’s done, he’s quick to step in and take Qianna away from her mother while she recovers from the traumatic (and incredibly painful) event. At this point in his life, Vergil still believes that Eva abandoned him to die, so seeing a mother basically torture her own child to near death lit a bit of a fire under his ass.
Once she fully recovers, she tentatively asks Vergil if she can stick with him, at least until she has a more competent grasp on her new abilities to look out for herself (‘cause oof…she is Rough at first lmao). They’re not exactly Supah Besties at this point, so she’s not quite sure how he’ll respond to her request; deep down she’s mostly just afraid of being on her own. Vergil ends up agreeing though, and they end up sticking together even after her skills increase (causevergildoesn’tlikebeingaloneeither).
Naturally, they become much closer as they travel together. Vergil learns to appreciate the bit of levity Qianna brings to his daily life; she never manages to get him to full-out laugh or anything, but she can bully a smile out of him from time to time. Qiqi manages to sneak her way into being the one person Vergil intrinsically trusts to watch his back (the fact that she’s plenty competent in a fight along with being so handy with spells [and seal-breaking in particular] helped a lot in his growing tolerance of her). But haha that doesn’t last.
Now, the reasons why Vergil was in Fortuna and WHEN he’s there seem pretty fuzzy. It’d make so much sense of Arkham’s mansion (and therefore the library that Vergil peruses when they first meet) to be in Sparda Cult Land, but…alas, that doesn’t seem to be the case as far as canon is concerned. So I kinda do an ass pull on why Qianna and Vergil meet up in Fortuna. I’d say they meet Arkham in all his icky glory, Qianna doesn’t trust Arkham at all and wants nothing to do with the man, period. However Vergil is more open to using Arkham for his own gains. So maybe Qiqi suggests they at least cover their asses and do some of their own research into the Temen-ni-gru to see if Arkham is actually on to something or completely full of shit. She goes to ahead on to Fortuna on her own since I imagine it’s like…The Place for information about Sparda and Vergil meets up with her there. (Yeah! I’m ignoring random Fortuna girl swooning over our favorite weeb lmao. Any girl can and probably has done that, she ain’t special bahaha. Qianna probably sees it go down and makes fun of Vergil for being such a lady killer IDK.)
Anyway, she probably finds some sort of information about Temen-ni-gru, and they end up sticking around to look into the Order because hey they’re weird and worth oogling. Annnnd obviously this is where they end up conceiving Nero. I imagine Qianna and Vergil have already had sex several times prior to Fortuna (I mean…they’re a pair of good looking teenagers…hormones a-raging and all xD), so it ain’t nothing special, just study break things lmao. They leave Fortuna together and return to Arkham’s mansion, and this is about where shit falls apart. I wouldn’t put it by Arkham to gaslight Vergil into pushing Qianna away (“she’s a weak human and she makes you weak blahblahblah”). Qianna still isn’t buying Arkham’s whole story and I’m sure the clown knows it, so better to get her the fuck out before she can ruin his plans by talking sense into Vergil.
So yeah, the last time Vergil and Qianna see each other until decades later they have a nasty fight and Qiqi gets kicked to the curb with a pretty much shattered heart. We love the angst bahah.
She ends up returning to Fortuna after she finds out she’s pregnant, finding the town safer for her to have the baby since the Order exists and keeps demons at bay pretty well at this point in time. Her powers still attract demons, and she has no one else to turn to for help at this point in her life, so Fortuna is the best option for her to be in a vulnerable state. She opts to have Nero even after the bad break off from Vergil because dammit if she still doesn’t have Feelings for the asshole. Qianna originally planned to keep and raise Nero, but after he was born, she fully realized just how ill-prepared she was to not only take care of a baby, but keep them both safe from demons and other unsavory types. Reluctantly, she decides to hand him over to an orphanage in Fortuna. She does drop by the town once in a blue moon to discreetly check on Nero as he grows, but keeps her distance.

Okay, I'll make a post ( I’d rather divide it into volumes, cause it would be long post ). Also there will be many ( and I mean MANY ) references to other movies and books.
VOL. 1 Ladies and Gentlemen, meet the magnificent Elsa ( Elsa Rohanne ) Sparda, Vergil's wife and concurrently my vision of Nero's mom. I decided to make her the same half-demon as Dante and Vergil, but in her case it turned out the opposite: her mother was a demoness and her father was a human.
Background story: Her mother, Rohanne, was one of Sparda's old friends among the demons ( if not one of the few ). She was an aquatic demon to be more specific ( her strength, power and abilities were strongly connected with the element of water ). After the uprising of Sparda, she, like him, settled on earth and built her own paradise ( no matter how ironic it may sound ). Her husband, Phillip, also shared her love of water and often liked to travel by water and was also a businessman who owned oceanariums ( for let's be honest, demons are proud and self-loving creatures by nature, if they have condescended to such a thing as marriage with a human, if they connect their lives with one, they obviously don't take simple ones ). He was inspired by Corlys Velaryon from asoiaf. And then a daughter was born, a complete copy of her mother, in demonic nature and beauty. She and Sparda were family-friends and, accordingly, Vergil and Dante knew Elsa since very childhood. By nature, Elsa was like the element she absorbed with her mother's milk: calm, balanced and fluid, but also loud, raw and fierce as a sea storm. She also was extremely sassy, witty and defiant ( And who do you think Nero inherited his rebellious spirit from ? Not from Verg, for sure ) and if they got along with Dante right away due to his friendly, light-hearted personality, then with Vergil, the dynamics of the relationship at first resembled Derek and Odette from The Swan Princess. Gradually, they warmed to each other more and more on the common interests of literature ( especially poems ) , history, philosophy, music and art ( including art of war and training ), learning new things about each other and telling each other about what they loved most which she unfortunately could not share with Dante since he was indifferent to all of it. Tables turned and soon they were inseparable, like two shards of precious gem glued together. It was noticeable to adults as well. Rohanne and Sparda seeing their relationship already started ship them and picturing their future, with two remaining demon bloodlines united as one cause demon blood must stick together. But then, you know what happened: Sparda and Rohanne fought and probably died, one demon horde came to the Sparda mansion and second to the Rohanne mansion and if Sparda’s fell, the Rohanne mansion stood until the very end and eventually withstood cause it was beforehand casted a lot of protection spells in case any unwanted guests would make a visit in her house. Before battle Rohanne left Phill and Elsa in there, exchanged the last kiss and embrace with her precious ones — her family and left. She was dying in utter joy and peace cause she protected them, she succeeded and that’s meant that she will remain her legacy in her daughter, her line won’t die out but prosper further and further generations and she was happy to know that today she dies with a hope and calm in her black devil heart, as black as the very depth of the ocean. Elsa since that very day started to be even more concentrated, stern, studious and merciless to herself in her training with weapons and her abilities. Her father taught her how to find her way out by the stars, navigating her in many things. Soon she became the most dreadful opponent to her enemies who caused her mother’s death and to all demons who will ever do harm her or most importantly — her family and loved ones. She eventually found her mother’s most sacred and treasured thing besides her own daughter — Rohanne’s sword that can transform into trident which would multiply her daughters might even more than she already possess. It was Rohanne’s last gift to her child besides her three-dolphined pendant that she gifted Elsa on her 6 birthday. Her grief was long and dark until day when she found out that Dante and Vergil are alive. Especially Vergil. With a new information she packed her belongings and left Redgrave on her new mission: to find her best childhood friend ( friend ?).

Hey does anyone remember that one post I made about making an animatic about Vergil and Francesca (Nero’s mom) using the song “there are other ways” from the Epic musical?
No? Make sense, I don’t think many people saw it.
But! I’m actually trying to do it. This is all I’ve done for now. Obviously it won’t be a clean thing but hey, I’m doing it!
