So How Many Engines Does the NWR Actually Have?
Eighty, according to the Reverend Wilbert Awdry - but this includes British Rail and Industrial engines. It also seems excessive for an island the size of Sodor which has, according to TheUnluckyTug, an 87.7 odd mile mainline and another 30 odd miles of branchline, especially when compared with several other railways of similar size. I am going to warn everyone here, this post is long.
The neighbouring Furness Railway built roughly 247 engines during its lifetime, of which a good fifty-five were 'Sharpies' - however that railway had 190 miles of railway and served some of the largest steelworks and dockyards in all of England. In contrast, the Northern Counties Committee Railway in Northern Island had a maximum route mileage of around 282 miles and only 73 engines. This same NCC ran nearly half of all trains in Northern Island at the time, sharing a duopoly with the GNRI. After amalgamating together into the Northern Ireland Railways and shrinking the full network of Northern Irish railway down to 225 miles, they today run 47 locomotives.
The railway network that serves the entirety of Northern Island is bigger than Sodor in length and requires less engines. It also calls at 54 stations, in comparison to Sodor's 27 stations that the NWR serves. So, let's do some maths and logic puzzles to try and figure out how many engines the NWR actually needs to serve the Island of Sodor.
Firstly, let's look at how many the books name: eleven NWR steam locomotives, six diesel engines, one track maintenance vehicle, as well as three industrial engines and an unknown number of electric engines. This means that the Peel Godred line could have any number of engines, however we can make a reasonable estimate at two multiple units for the four stops, and two or three goods engines to look after the aluminium traffic and other goods work. That makes five engines needed for the branchline.
The Ffarquhar branchline similarly does not require that many engines. Its primary industry is the Anopha Quarry, with a number of farms making up the rest of the freight traffic the line would have. In the books, the line is run by Thomas, Percy, Toby, Daisy and Mavis - the private industrial engine who manages the quarry. This means that there is one dedicated railcar, one autotank-fitted tank engine, a tram engine, a dedicated quarry diesel and Percy to run the line. The only addition possibly required would be an engine to run dedicated stone trains from Ffarquhar to the junction or the harbour, a task that seems to already be covered by Toby, Percy and Mavis. That adds another five engines to our list of standard-gauge engines on Sodor.
Another branchline that does not need any extra engines would be the Little Western, which was only refurbished by Sir Charles Hatt to access the ballast from the old MSR mines. With Duck and Oliver running passengers, Duck managing most of the limited freight traffic that isn't ballast and Donald and Douglas covering most ballast trains, there is no need for any extra engines, and adds another four engines to our list.
After that, Edward's branchline is where we may see some additions. The branchline may be quite short, having only three stations on its route, but it also has Brendam Harbour, which is a major port for the island, as well as the China Clay Pits, which are served by Bill and Ben - the other two industrial engines mentioned in the books. They are known to shunt Brendam Harbour on occasion, while Edward and BoCo run the branchline itself, with Donald and Douglas helping. This line would need more engines as freight traffic through Brendam Docks increased, as well as a dedicated shunting engine for the harbour. That adds up to seven engines to our list to run this section of the line - being Bill, Ben, Edward, BoCo and three new helpers.
Potential candidates from the TVS for filling these roles could be: Salty, Neville, Molly or perhaps Whiff - all of whom are either shunting engines or medium-sized engines who would be able to compliment Edward and BoCo well.
After Edward's branchline, we have to talk about the Kirk Ronan and Norramby branches. The Kirk Ronan branchline has three stations, and was once part of the Sodor and Mainland Railway. We know passenger traffic is poor, and the freight traffic was solely dedicated to mineral traffic from the Skarloey Railway heading to the port. It's highly likely that this line is either kept operational for a token service, or has one engine running it. Either way, we can add one engine to the list, of whom I would suggest Arthur.
The Norramby branchline is currently served by the Other Railway, according to Awdry - this would mean multiple units running passenger trains from Barrow and potentially a freight service, though that would have likely been discontinued in the 1960's during the Beeching cuts. Currently, 26 trains operate out of Barrow up the Cumbrian Coast Line per day, while the Furness line sees roughly 24 trains per day, according to the Northern Rail Timetable. Most likely, one of these two lines would have their services extend to Norramby, meaning up to 24 trains per day for the line. However, it is highly unlikely that each train to arrive on this service is a new engine, with it being more likely to be four or five engines. This adds five engines to our list, for a current total of twenty-seven.
To this figure, we can add the Works Diesel, Bloomer, and the austerity engine referenced in 'Wilbert the Forest Engine', making thirty.
This leaves the mainline as needing 50 whole engines to reach Awdry's figure of 80 - and of this potential number, we know Henry, Gordon, James, Bear, Pip and Emma. To understand how many engines are needed, we need to understand what jobs these engines would do - of which, there is passenger trains, the express, freight trains and shunting.
If the mainline has eleven stations, 87.7 miles of track and they wanted to have a train arrive every hour to meet their Northern partners... well, they'd need more engines. It takes one hour for a train between Lancaster and Barrow - a distance of 28.6 miles, so we can safely assume that tripling the distance would triple the time - for a trip time of around three hours. Now, this time would most likely be shortened by the chance for the engines to achieve higher speeds between stations, as the number of stations on both lines is roughly equal - 10 on the Furness line to 11 on the NWR mainline - but even still, it would require the railway running six separate stopping trains per day. Considering that only four of the six engines above could even run commuter trains, I would say that there is need for more engines.
There are currently two express trains that run on the Island of Sodor: The Limited and the WildNorWester, however it is not certain that the Limited is still running, as it only appeared for 'Enterprising Engines'. In any case, Pip and Emma are enough to handle fast trains on Sodor.
Freight is an interesting variable - we know that Sodor produces aluminium near Peel Godred, and that the alumina needs to be transported up there, and the finished product moved to the mainland, as well as general goods trains, farm produce trains, and freight trains bound for the harbours or from the quarry or China Clay pits. Based on these key requirements, it is safe to say Sodor needs a few more engines.
So, for the mainline we have Pip, Emma, Gordon, Henry, James, Bear and at least eight other engines of various sizes. Two of these engines would be built to run passenger trains alongside Henry, James, Gordon and Bear, while the other six would handle goods traffic, in particular bulk traffic or local goods. Fourteen engines, with potential help from Donald, Douglas and BoCo seems more reasonable as a number of engines on the mainline of a primarily agricultural island.
Suggestions for these engines include Murdoch, Derek, Emily and Rebecca - which is a shorter list than it should be due to the lack of large, mainline engines in the Thomas series who could feasibly run in the UK.
Finally, two shunting engines - one for Tidmouth and one for Barrow-in-Furness - can be added to the list, as since Duck gained his branchline, we have not been introduced to the new station pilot at Tidmouth and since the rise of the multiple-unit, Barrow station would require an engine to act as station pilot there too. Options for here include Diesel, Charlie, Dennis, Rosie and Paxton.
All of these numbers added together equals: 46. Twenty-three branchline engines, three industrial engines, two maintenance engines, one austerity engine, one preserved engine, fourteen mainline engines and two station pilots. Considering at the beginning I said that Northern Ireland Railways runs 47 engines currently and has a network of over double the size of Sodor but doesn't run freight, I would say that this is a pretty respectable estimate.
In direct contrast to this estimate, my ERS has 34 engines who cover the entire NWR and the neighbouring Furness Line. My reasoning: Donald and Douglas are magic, and scarily efficient. Having the two of them around means Edward and BoCo need no help on their branchline, and also Sodor would not need a commuter train every hour - it's a rural, agricultural island with three major population centres at Peel Godred, Vicarstown and Tidmouth. And also cause I have enough characters to balance already, Awdry had the right idea keeping the cast relatively small.

Press Release: ICI's Think College Launches Accreditation Agency for Inclusive Higher Education
For immediate release: April 5, 2023
Boston, Ma. — Think College, a center within the Institute for Community Inclusion (ICI) at the University of Massachusetts Boston, announced today the launch of the Inclusive Higher Education Accreditation Council (IHEAC), a new accrediting agency for inclusive postsecondary programs for students with intellectual disability (ID).
In 2020, Think College set out to establish a process for implementing national program accreditation standards to ensure the quality and accountability of college programs for students with ID. The Think College National Coordinating Center (NCC) received funding from the US Department of Education Office of Postsecondary Education for this work.
The NCC Accreditation Workgroup has created a guidance manual as well as self-study and site visit processes. The Workgroup is currently field-testing the full accreditation process. Dr. Kelly Kelley at the UP Program at Western Carolina University volunteered to complete the first accreditation self-study report and seek accreditation from the IHEAC.
Accreditation Workgroup members Carol Britton Laws (University of Georgia), Bill Loyd (University of Iowa), and Cynthia May (College of Charleston) served as peer reviewers for an accreditation site visit for the University Participant (UP) program at Western Carolina University. They met with current students, alumni, faculty, staff, employers, university partners, and families to discuss the UP program. All reviewers have extensive experience in the area of inclusive higher education.
NCC Accreditation Workgroup Chair Dr. Martha Mock stated, “We are excited that the IHEAC will now provide the opportunity for inclusive higher education programs to obtain accreditation and grateful to the UP Program for their willingness to be the inaugural program seeking accreditation.”
The creation of the new agency builds on the work of previous accreditation workgroups, which started in 2011. In 2020, a Report to Congress from the NCC described the work to date and shared finalized program accreditation standards for the first time. Debra Hart, Co-Principal lnvestigator indicated that “the resulting standards and accreditation process will go a long way to ensuring that higher education options for students with ID are of the highest quality.”
###
The Institute for Community Inclusion (ICI) promotes the inclusion of people with disabilities in their communities through training, consultation, clinical and employment services, and research. ICI is a University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities based at the University of Massachusetts Boston and Boston Children’s Hospital.

"20 years after democracy, Nigeria producing poverty, misery — Peter Obi cries out
Tumblr media
WORRIED about the fuel shortages, scarcity of new naira notes, among other problems bedeviling the country, the Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, LP, Peter Obi, has said 20 years after Nigeria’s democracy was gotten, the country has produced poverty, out of school children, misery, among others for the Nigerian people. Obi stated this when he played host to Nigeria National Council 2023 meeting of the Full Gospel Business Men’s Fellowship International, held at the National Christian Center, NCC, on Friday, in Abuja. Describing the 2023 general elections as existential, Obi said stories in Nigeria have never been beyond pain and suffering of the poor masses, stating that Nigeria should not get it wrong in the forthcoming elections. He said Nigeria qualified for a failed state, explaining that with the spate of insecurity in the country, the current administration has lost control over its territory. He said: “I believe that this year’s election for Nigeria is an existential election. We have gotten to a point where we can no longer afford to do anything wrong otherwise all of us would be refugees. “We have gotten to a point where some of us don’t know what people go through. I was in Jigawa, Sokoto, Kebbi, everywhere I go you see Nigerians at ATMs to take their own hard earned money that is not even worth anything but they can’t get it. I see Nigerians queuing up for fuel, when we are an oil producing country. “You now live in a country that has qualified for a failed state. The two most important ingredients of a failed state is when you don’t have control over your territory. We are no longer in control of Nigeria today. None of you can travel through Kaduna road without people checking if you’ve arrived successfully, you can’t go by air without your family phoning your to confirm if you’ve arrived, you can’t go by train. “The second is when you are no longer in control of your economy. The bread we used to buy for 400, is now over 1000. Nobody knows the cost of petrol. Rice today costs about 40-50,000. So, your country has failed. “We have over 133 million people living in multidimensional poverty. A country of 220 million has over 60 percent of the population living in poverty. We have more people living in poverty than India and China. These two countries have 2.8billion people. Our unemployment is 35 percent for a country of this size, youth unemployment is even worse at 55 per cent. Everything is headed south and in the past 20 years of our democracy, all we have produced is insecurity, poverty, out of school children, misery, pain on our people. This cumulative effect of leadership failure over the years. “Nigeria can be secured. The enemy is no longer formidable. They are not. Anyone who says criminals are more formidable than Nigerians, that’s a lie. What is lacking is leadership, what is lacking is being able to organise our security architecture. I have interviewed all the security agencies and I have found out they can do the job if they can be equipped, manned and supported. “We have removed poverty. We have a factor endowment of every region that can make this country to be very productive but we chose to go by the sharing formula instead of the production formula. So this country needs to be moved from production to consumption. It must happen. We have borrowed money without anybody asking what the money was borrowed for. “My dear people, get involved. This is a case where lunatics have taken over the asylum and we must rescue it from them. If not, it will consume everyone. It is good we are praying, it is good that we are going everything for the election but I think it is time for us to be righteous in dealing with people stealing public money.” He, therefore, pleaded with Nigerians across religious and ethnic boards to get involved by voting a candidate with character, completers and mental capacity to take the country to Uhuru. He urged all political party members in APC, PDP, among others to look away party affiliation, and vote for the best candidate. On his part, the National President of the Full Gospel Businessmen Fellowship International, Arc. Ifeanyi Odedo, while commending Peter Obi for gracing the occasion, urged the congregants to be wise during the 2023 election. Read the full article

Christening
“Good morning. I’d like to start by thanking all of you for coming today, many of you I know have travelled quite a long way. Many of you, I know, are here to silently, or not so silently, show your opposition.” “Many of you have made clear your concerns for the Bataan being built. Starfleet is, first and foremost, a philanthropic organization. For hundreds of years, we have carried humanity into the stars and taken with us food, medicine, disaster relief, mercy, and compassion. We have set our sights on the horizon so that we may explore it. Our goal was to turn uncharted space into scientific endeavors.” “The Bataan is not a medical frigate. It is not a consular vessel. It will never be sent to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life or new civilizations. As Picard once spoke of a Reman vessel, she is a predator. Her job is to hunt down threats to peace, and subdue them.” “Many of you have made clear to me your many worries, and so I must make clear to you...I share your concerns. Your fears are mine. The thoughts you brought to me over the last few years have kept me awake at night. Make no mistake, every horrible scenario you have vocalized, I have imagined worse before you have breakfast.” “History is filled with conquerors who flew a flag of righteousness. Our home world is littered with the graves of crusades. Genocide and eugenics were disguised as peacekeeping and police actions. Every generation has their murderers who claimed superiority.” “Ships like this were their weapons. They were...barbaric. Singular in purpose and intent. No words could disguise their motives, no matter how grand a speech they gave.” “But a ship is like any tool. The intent of its wielder matters. The Indonesian karambit can just as easily dig roots from a garden as it can cut a man’s jugular vein. A machete can kill and clear brush. The axe can fell a tree, or it can fell an empire. History is filled with lawmen and outlaws who carried the same weapons. History is filled with lawmen who used these tools with with ill intent. Robin Hood was a traitor to the crown who used the bow and arrow to free a kingdom from that crown.” “Intent matters.” Captain Rodgers paused for a moment. He turned to look out the window of the spacedock, towards his new command. Akira-class refit, NCC-75302. Tailor made to specification, built unlike any other ship in the fleet, tight and confined, hardened against damage. Her outer hull was sleek, but he knew inside she was meant to pack as many weapons and troops as possible, to be at the forefront of the fight and to hold the vanguard against whatever the universe could unleash. Built to stand toe to toe with Dominion fleets and push them back. He turned his attention back to his audience. “In my career, I have made many oaths. To protect and defend. To explore. To shield Earth from the Dominion, to take the fight to the Borg. Today, I make another oath. It is my solemn promise to you, and to the universe as a whole, that our intent will matter. That while we may wield the axe, we as a crew will endeavor every day to remember every murder committed in the name of justice, every crusade fought by charlatans, so that we may prevent it, not enable it.” “The history of Starfleet is filled with fights we could not win because we did not have the tools we needed. Today, that rhetoric changes, but we will not let that change who we are. This ship may be built to fight a war, but we are not warriors. We are peacekeepers, and we’re going to keep it at all costs.”

The market was flooded with negative news, including aggressive interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve, inflation in the United Kingdom, the situation in Russia and Ukraine, and rising global resource prices. The local economy was also sluggish, which dragged down the market sentiment.
The Hang Seng Index opened 74 points lower, and then the decline expanded. It fell as much as 384 points in the morning, and plunged 393 points in the afternoon, reaching a low of 16,438 points, hitting a new low in more than 11 years. However, A-shares suddenly stumbled and rose in the afternoon, driving the Hong Kong stock market to rebound sharply by 208 points. However, the market went down repeatedly. In the end, the Hang Seng Index fell 131 points to 16,701 points throughout the day, with a high-low volatility of 602 points throughout the day. The HS technology index hit a record low of 3,159 points and closed at 3,269 points, down 8 points. Market turnover rose to HK$112.8 billion , the most since Sept. 16.
Although it fell yesterday, the Hang Seng Index showed a doji in the trend chart. In addition, the RSI bottom diverged and it was severely oversold. It is expected to rebound today. The 17,000 mark is the first resistance, and the bigger resistance is the falling gap on Monday (17,449 to 17,717 ). After the rebound, the Hang Seng Index will still test 16,123 points, hoping for support near this level, otherwise the weaker situation may even meet 15,634 points.
There was a brief rebound in Hong Kong stocks yesterday, mainly due to the rebound of A-shares in the afternoon, which has a positive impact on the market. The upcoming "20 th NCC" is a big catalyst in the short term, and may have the opportunity to benefit individual industries. Investors focus on the minutes of the Federal Reserve's September meeting on interest rates, as well as the upcoming inflation data and the mainland's third-quarter GDP figures to be released next week, all of which will affect the direction of the market.
The U.S. just announced September producer price index (PPI) remained strong, indicating that inflation is difficult to fall. U.S. stocks struggled on Wednesday, with the Dow rising more than 200 points, and the three major indexes eventually softening again and again. The Dow lost 28 points to close at 29,210; the SSI closed down 11 points at 3,577, its sixth straight losing streak and a new 52-week low; the Nasdaq fell 9 points to 10,417.

Life sometimes manifested itself in strange ways. Even for Din. And he didn't expect to wake up with a tray of freshly prepared food at his disposal. You had even written him a note describing every single food on the plate. "French pastries are the basis of a successful breakfast" you wrote and if he had no idea what the "French" part meant, he heard his stomach growling at the simple sweet, slightly perfumed smell of the pastries.
The day could only start well and Grogu was already enjoying swallowing little choux buns topped with sugar balls. Din chuckled at him gently before grabbing one and twirling it between his gloved fingers.
" Let me have some of it. "he said before sliding the food under his helmet into his mouth.
And he let a long, satisfied sigh escape. When was the last time he had eaten something so good? There was something special about earthly food, was it because it had been a long time since Din had been able to enjoy the flavours of a good meal? He could never get tired of it and he ate another one. He had to ask you what it was but he had just placed it as one of his favourites.
And then he noticed something else on the little note you had left him. A little note that made him frown. What did you mean when you said, "P.s. Sorry, I had to. » ? A little shot of adrenaline reminded him that maybe he had let his guard down a little too quickly and a little too long. It was only then that he heard voices other than yours rising from the outside of the ship.
He didn’t think twice, the ramp of the ship opened and he turned towards Grogu before leaving.
"Stay there and don't eat everything. "He said to Grogu, who had no intention of listening to him.
Within a few steps Din found himself outside and suddenly found it hard to understand what was going on.
A small group of young people around you were studying the plans you and Din had drawn. Some of them were impatient, others were so focused that they didn't hesitate to scold those who weren't being serious.
Something was eluding him and he thought that his little stay on earth had made his brain weak. Since when did he let himself be so easily surprised? And to tell the truth, at that very moment you were surprising him too.
You didn't notice Mando right away. He wasn't doing much to be noticed either, he was confused enough to ask for the attention of five unknown people. But you didn't have a choice.
The night had not been very restful. The conversation you had the night before with Mando had gone round and round in your head and between the sprawling galactic monsters landing on Earth and the army coming in tanks, your mind had other things to do than rest. And those disturbing dreams hadn't helped your anxiety, so you decided you needed to pick up the pace. But speeding up without a work crew was a tricky thing to do.
Life had a really strange way of showing itself sometimes and until now, you probably never thought to ask for help to repair this ship. Help other than what Mando was already giving you. You had been far too aware of the danger it could represent, for you, for Mando, for Grogu... but what was better? Revealing his presence to students in whom you trusted partially? Or to be discovered by the police?
It wasn't a good idea, you knew that. And you hadn't taken the time to discuss it with Mando either. It was more of a decision taken on a whim and you would surely regret it later, but today, thanks to the students you had carefully selected, the repairs were going to be a good step forward. And the sooner the ship would be able to fly, the sooner Mando and Grogu would be safe, away from Earth.
In other words, you were reassuring yourself as best you could.
You didn't know if those dreams had been the trigger or if the lack of sleep had caused some neurons to break down, but in the early morning you woke up with an awful realization: it was much bigger than you. And no matter how full-grown you were, no matter how thoughtful and composed you were, this morning it was all too much. And sharing this secret with almost grown-up people was probably the only way to relieve the pressure you had put on yourself.
So there you were, explaining as best you could to five of your students the tasks they were going to be assigned to repair the ship. But that wasn't the most complicated part. You had to deal with your students' reaction to the ship and nothing in your studies to become a teacher prepared you for that.
"Well, can we focus for five minutes? "You asked them as one student had been trying for a solid two minutes to calm down his friend who still couldn't believe his eyes.
"Ma'am, can you believe it?! "He exclaimed, "A real one! »
"Get over it, it's not as cool as Star Trek's USS Entreprise NCC-1701-E. "His friend who never seemed very impressed with the Razor Crest commented.
"I wish you knew my courses as accurately as that." you smiled slightly. "Good, you'll start by gathering all the material listed in here," and you gave them each a piece of paper. " you get to work and... be respectful. " You glance at them briefly before finishing. " Croissants and chouquettes as much as you like in the car."
And you knew that their motivation had just been boosted to the max. You got up and only then you spotted Mando near the ship. And his whole body was more tense than a tree trunk. And the trickiest part of your hasty decision had just begun: persuading Mando that your potentially bad idea wasn't such a bad idea.
Your students didn't seem to have noticed him yet, they were far too busy eating pastries and it seemed that a croissant was more important than a spaceship piloted by the Galactic Daft Punk cousin. Ah those students!
It was just that a little anxiety was making your stomach heavier. From what you could see Mando didn't seem the most delighted to have a bunch of young people he didn't know around his Razor Crest but hopefully he would understand.
"It wasn't planned." He said, his voice muffled by the helmet.
"I know. And as much as I would have loved to have the Crest all to myself, sometimes you have to be realistic." You said, and you were looking forward to his reaction.
"You're not realistic. You're worried. That' s not the same thing. "
And for the first time, you observed Mando withdraw into himself. He wasn't very talkative already, but it seemed to you that you had managed to win his sympathy.  You had seen him trust you gradually and you feared you had taken ten steps backwards, whereas you had only taken two in the same direction.
And then you felt a pinch of irritation tickle your nerves. His words had not been well received and it would have been hard for Mando to miss the annoyance expressed by the hardened features of your face. Your posture had changed too. Your arms, which were usually open, had just crossed over your chest, your usually relaxed and loose shoulders were now tensed and stiff, and even your chest, which was usually light and sometimes delicate, now looked much stronger. You showed a disconcerting self-confidence and Din made the pleasant discovery that you were not the type to let yourself be stepped on.
But this was not the time to dwell on your new confidence.
"Indeed, I am worried for you and I think that the situation has been sufficiently addressed for you to understand that I will never be able to get you out of this rotten planet to the bone without any help. "And the features of your face softened again. "Look, yes, that wasn't planned, and I'm not asking you to trust them, but for your, "you paused before correcting" if you want to leave Earth in one piece, we must work faster."
Mando sighed heavily. You saw him lower his head slightly, as if he was thinking about the pros and cons. He was nervous. You could see that and you suspected a rather complicated past in relation to other people, perhaps one or two betrayals, and he was thinking over and over again until he nodded silently.
"You know this world better than I do. I trust you, but I won't go easy on them. "He granted and he saw you relax completely, the hint of annoyance had completely disappeared and he recognized you in your kindness.
"Don't worry, they are students, there is nothing more resilient. "You gave him a little smile before gently placing your hand on his forearm in a friendly gesture. "They won't bother you, I'll make sure of that."
Mando nodded again and before you could go back to repair the ship, he couldn't help but stop you for a moment, holding your arm.
"What's the name of the, huh, ‘French’ pastries you brought me?" he asked.
" They're called 'chouquettes', why that?"
"Do you have some more of them? Grogu... Grogu seems to like it." He justified himself.
But you couldn’t be fooled. Grogu was certainly not the only one who liked them.

Link to Chapter 2 (with Ch. 1 link)
Monday morning rolled around faster than Sam would've liked.  She felt her stomach churn at the prospect of not having Linda there to talk to.
She headed to the office early with a quick stop at the bakery along the way.  Armed with fresh donut holes (plain glazed, cookie dough stuffed, cinammon sugar sprinkled, and maple glazed) and a toasted white hot chocolate, she halted in her tracks when she reached the door to the office suite.
"What the...  When the hell did he have this done?"
Her grey eyes began to burn as she studied the frosted glass of the door.
VMS Architecture, LLC. Vincent M. Stevens, NCARB Samantha Monroe, Administrative Assistant
She stared at her name, beautifully scripted in gold lettering on the glass.
Linda hadn't even had that honor.
Her hand trembled as she unlocked the door and stepped into the office.  My office.
As she flipped on the light and started toward her desk she paused again, startled to find her name beautifully engraved onto a walnut name plate settled on the corner of the desk, next to a matching business card holder complete with a stack of cards with her name, extension and email.
A ceramic flower pot sat next to the computer monitor at the opposite corner of the desk with an artfully planted variety of small cactus plants.  She let out a watery laugh at the wording on the pot: Free Hugs.  She knew the cacti were from Linda, an inside joke between the two of them based on something Linda had told her earlier in the week.  Vincent will come off as prickly for a while, but he will eventually warm up to you, Dear.  Give him time, give him space, occasionally make sure he eats and drinks if he has a very busy day.  One day he will surprise you.
A gift bag and a card were placed on the center of the desk.  Sam shook her head as she set her cup and the donut holes down, busying herself with putting her purse away and hanging her jacket on the coat rack next to the door.
She had just finished starting the coffee and setting the box of breakfast goodies on the refreshment table when she heard the door open.  She turned around and offered a warm smile when Vincent shut the door behind him.  "Good morning, Mr. Stevens," she greeted him.  "Thank you for..." she gestured to the desk set.
"Don't mention it," he frowned at the desk.  "Ready to start your first official week?"
"Yes, sir," she nodded.  "The coffee should be ready in five minutes, and I picked up an assortment of donut holes," she made her way to the window and the cords for the wooden blinds.  "I wasn't sure what you would like so I picked four different kinds."
"I know Linda told you I have a sweet tooth," his tone was wry as he made his way to his office.  "I'm sure whatever you got is fine."
Sam made her way back to the desk.  As she waited for the computer to start she picked up the card propped up against the small gift.
Sam-- Our Vincent struck gold when he hired you to take over the office.  You will do just fine as his new assistant.  Don't let his prickly demeanor get to you, it's become his default setting ever since that happened.  And don't forget, you can decorate your office however it suits you, you can bring stuff in to keep in the bathroom, you can listen to your music, and you can dress however you feel most comfortable as long as you still look professional.  And if Vincent ever treats you wrong, don't be afraid to call me.  I might be moving out of state, but I can always make a trip back to knock some sense into that thick skull of his.  You can also call me anytime you want, keep me up-to-date on the gossip.  I'll miss everyone there, and even though I'd only known you a short time, I've come to view you as another daughter.  You take good care of our Vincent, spoil him with breakfast sweets and good coffee.  Make sure he eats, make sure he goes home to get some rest when the project consumes him (and it will, I've come in many a morning to find him sound asleep at the drawing board or on that damn couch.  He's a real bastard when he doesn't get enough rest, but don't let that scare you off).  Keep in touch.-- Love, Linda. P.S.- Don't forget, I left you a set of "How To Care For Your Architect" instructions tucked away in the second drawer to your left.  It includes a list of everything I know he likes, hotels and airlines he prefers, restaurants he uses for business dinners.  His favorite color is steel grey, he's a sucker for Hershey Hugs, and if he misplaces his pen, you'll find it on your desk.
Sam dashed away the tear that had slipped down her cheek as she set the card aside.  She had grown to love Linda as a second mom and already missed her.  She smiled as she reached for the gift bag and nearly cried when she pulled out a black resin cat paper weight.
She set it next to the phone on the left side of the desk before turning to the computer to log in.
Sam settled into a routine.  Up at five, out the door by six-thirty, stop by the bakery for breakfast and for that yummy hot chocolate, arrive at the office by seven-thirty, have coffee ready by seven-forty-five, lunch anywhere between eleven and one-thirty (depending on Vincent's schedule), out the door whenever Vincent finished up for the day, home within half an hour, in her pajamas and eating a quick supper, in bed by ten-thirty.  Wash, rinse, repeat.  By her third day Vincent tried telling her she could leave at four-thirty if she wished, there was no need to stay passed office hours.  She declined.  "I was hired as your administrative assistant, Mr. Stevens.  I leave when you leave."
She found an old-fashioned candy bowl at a flea market one weekend and brought it in to place on her desk with Hershey Hugs.  She had also found a few other things she wanted to bring in, but hesitated on personalizing the office.  She worried Vincent would not appreciate finding a framed blueprint of the USS Enterprise NCC-1701 or a replica of the Death Star plans data chip.
She feared they would clash with that hideous knock-off Jackson Pollock painting that hung on the wall behind her desk, above the shelves.  She hated that painting.  Why it hung in an architect's office she had no idea.  It was the only thing out of place in the office suite.  Vincent's office proudly displayed his degrees, certificates and licenses, a few framed blueprints and a framed crudely-drawn blueprint of the Castle Grayskull.  "I grew up on Masters of the Universe, had all the action figures and the castle.  I was home sick for a week with chicken pox, miserable as hell, bored out of my mind and missing my friends.  Dad came home early from work one afternoon with a bag full of crayons, coloring books and a sketchpad, gave Mom some cash and told her to go shopping, go eat, get out of the house and enjoy herself for a while.  I sat down on the floor after Dad cleared off the coffee table and we colored for a while.  Then I started drawing.  I'd always been fascinated by the design of Castle Grayskull and wanted to build one of my own.  I was seven years old when I drew that.  That's when I knew I wanted to design and build things."
She had been shocked that he had so willingly shared that childhood memory with her.  And his smile.  She'd seen ghosts of smiles before, but a full-blown smile displaying dimples had left her weak in the knees.  He looked ten years younger with that smile, and she couldn't help but smile back.
But ever since that rare moment of camaraderie he'd thrown up a wall once again, bringing their working relationship back to strictly professional, and borderline cold.  She knew he could be an easy-going man to work for, she'd witnessed the banter between him and Linda multiple times during her trial week.  She just wished he wasn't so cold toward her.
Vincent had a meeting across town and would likely be gone all afternoon.  As he set his briefcase and suit jacket on one of her guest chairs and tossed his steel grey tie around his neck, he leveled his patented stern look on her.  The Look (TM) was supposed to be intimidating, and it used to scare the hell out of her the first few times she'd seen it (usually directed at someone else, but she'd been caught in the crosshairs a couple of times).  Unfortunately she (for some weird reason she couldn't explain) had begun to find that frowny glare to be sexy as hell.  "Ms. Monroe, if I'm not back by four-thirty, lock up shop for the day and go home," he turned toward the bathroom.  "You don't need to be pulling ten hour days because of me."
She smiled despite the blush staining her cheeks from The Look (TM).  "As I've said before, Mr. Stevens, I'm your administrative assistant, and it is my job to be here for you should you need me."
"I don't recall contracting you to work ten hours a day, Monroe," he turned away from the mirror as he finished his impeccable Windsor knot.
"Technically I'm only working nine," she pointed out as she leaned back in her chair.
"You eat at your desk half the time, Monroe," he walked out of the bathroom.  "I've seen you working through lunch."
"Only when I have a deadline to meet for your meetings," she shrugged.  "I need to finish putting together the portfolios for Thursday's meeting."
"Today's Tuesday, you have all day tomorrow."
"I'll be setting up the conference room and inventorying supplies so I know what you need."
He snorted.  "Remind me again why I hired such a stubborn assistant?"  He grabbed his jacket and shrugged into it.
She scooped a small handful of Hugs from the candy bowl and held them out when Vincent approached her desk.  "At first I thought you were very impressed with my resume, then I suspected for my looks... but now I honestly believe Linda probably threatened you into hiring me."
"Your resume certainly clinched it, Monroe.  And Linda did hound me."  His face darkened a little as he carefully took the offered chocolate from her hand.  "You're going to spoil my lunch, Monroe."
"No, I'm not," she denied, watching him slip the Hugs into the pocket of his jacket.  "I know you would have snuck a handful on your way out, to go along with the handful that's likely already stashed in your briefcase."
His head snapped up.
"I had to refill the bowl, Mr. Stevens," she leaned back in her chair.  "I'll definitely need to work longer hours to afford the chocolates and the breakfast sweets."
"Use the company card, I'll figure it into the expenses," he narrowed his eyes at her.  "Refreshments for clientele."
She nodded.  She didn't mind buying the chocolate or the morning sweets, but she knew better than to argue with him on it.  Arguing had always gotten her into serious trouble when she was a teenager.  Do not go there, Sam.
"All right, I will," she agreed softly.
"If you still have receipts, bring 'em in, I'll make sure to cut you a check to reimburse you."
"That's not necessary, Mr. Stevens," she shook her head.
He shot her a glare.  "Yes, it is.  I can't keep allowing you to pay out of pocket for pastries and candy that my clients and associates are eating."
I can't keep allowing you...  Sam stiffened at his words.  She quickly tore her eyes from his.  "I...  I didn't think it was that big of a deal, I'm...  I will find those receipts and bring them in," she flinched when Vincent moved toward the door.
That flinch was not lost on the architect.  He turned to look at her.  "Monroe, are you all right?"
Sam drew in a breath before nodding.  "I'm fine," she kept her eyes glued to the cat paper weight in front of her.
"Monroe, look at me."
The sudden and uncharacteristic softness in her boss' tone drew her eyes to him.  The look on his face told her he didn't believe her.  He took a step toward her and it was all she could do to not flinch away.
His frown morphed into one of worry.  "Monroe, don't worry about it," he took a step back.  "I just don't want you spending your money on things benefiting the company's clientele and associates."  He turned toward the door.  "Why don't you take your lunch, lock up the office and get some fresh air somewhere.  You don't have to stay in here when I'm out, let the calls go to voicemail.  They can wait."
She nodded.  "Okay."
"I mean it, Monroe.  Leave the office for an hour."
With that, he was gone.
Sam's eyes slid shut and she drew in a slow, shaky breath.  She exhaled heavily, shaking off the fear that had gripped her for a moment.  He won't hurt me.  He's not a predator.  He's not Terrance.
But those words echoed in her head, words her stepfather had used quite often when she had disobeyed him.  Words he had whispered so smoothly, so silkily, as he forced her to her knees or forced her over his desk.
"Don't go there, Sam," she ground out.  "He won't hurt you anymore."
She shifted in her seat, angling her chair to face her computer more comfortably, saving the proposal she was drafting for Vincent before closing out open programs and putting the device to sleep.  She reached for her phone and dialed her cousin's desk extension.  "Hey, I'm getting ready to head to lunch, wanna join me?"

NCC fic based of frank Sinatra song Somethin' Foolish, please? I think about them every time I hear it
Here we are! I’m so sorry this has taken so long! The course I was on took up basically all of my time and left me exhausted, but I have some good news there - I’m no longer on that course because I have a job now! I’m working as a junior copywriter so I’m actually being paid to write stuff! It also means I no longer have homework, so my evenings and more of my weekends will be free to get working on the list of prompts I have waiting, and I’ll be able to get back to my fics!
I really do hope you enjoy this. @missbabcocks1 @holomoriarty
This was bordering getting ridiculous now.
She’d been staring at the door of the Sheffield mansion forfar longer than any reasonable human being had stared at anything in the whole existenceof the species, and yet all she could think to do was just keep on staring! Itwasn’t even like she had to ring the doorbell today – she could see the doorwas on the latch! She was just frozen there, stuck in her own hesitation andthe knowledge that once she went inside, there was no getting out until workwas done.
And that would feel like an impossibly long amount of time, given the circumstances.
She checked her watch for what felt like the twelfth time inunder the space of a minute and sighed to herself. It was almost nine. Twelvehours ago, she and the butler had been at the Broadway Guild Awards, living itup a little after she’d taken home her hard-earned and richly deserved prize. They’dhad drinks with producers from all over town, muttered comments and laughedquietly as one actor grabbed the award for Most Inebriated Jackass and wasescorted out of the building, and…well, they’d had fun.
So much fun, she’d had to admit to herself by this stage, that they just hadn’t wanted it to end. And that was how they’d then foundthemselves back at the mansion. The Bourbon had come out for a drink or two,and Ella Fitzgerald had come on the stereo…
It’d been…nice…all the way up until Niles led her into andout of a dip.
That moment had been when he’d then said…the thing.
The thing thatC.C. had wanted to hear from a man for quite possibly her entire adult life, and yet she’d never heard. And then all of a sudden, it was coming from Niles.
How had she been supposed to deal with that? C.C. sure ashell hadn’t known. The only thing it’d made clear was that the universe reallydid have some intriguing ways of turning around and biting her in the ass. Allshe could do after was laugh even though the moment couldn’t have been less funnyif said universe had also dropped a dead puppy in the middle of the room.
She’d stopped laughing when she’d realised that the butler hadn’tsaid a word after. And the longer he hadn’t said anything, the more awkwardit’d felt.
That was when she’d said she had to go, and she’d bolted forthe nearest available exit.
And now…well, now, she was wondering if maybe she shouldn’tjust call Maxwell from her car and tell him that she wouldn’t be coming intoday. Or ever again, in actual fact.
Something about that felt better than having to deal withwhatever was waiting for her on the other side of that door. She’d been up allnight trying to figure out what could’ve possibly possessed the butler to justblurt that out from nowhere! Zero hours of sleep, at least five cups of coffee, and a groove in her floors from where she’d been pacing later, she’d come upwith nothing!
Was it some kind of joke, that she’d missed the punchline to? Sheremembered those kinds of jokes from school, where somehow simply asking herout was both an insult and a prank that boys had liked to play.
It’d taken her ages after to realise that not every man wasgonna play that joke. But in this case, she was back to square one andcompletely unsure.
Maybe it was one of his more elaborate pranks, and thepunchline just hadn’t come yet? That sounded more like Niles than somesimple-if-cruel schoolyard taunts.
But she couldn’t be sure about that, either. Why couldn’tshe be sure? Usually, with them, it was completely straightforward – oneinsulted the other, the other one fired one back, rinse and repeat untilclocking out time. Why was this time so different? What was making it so hardto reach some kind of conclusion?
The frustration of it all was too much. God damn it, she wasgoing to have to demand a real answer from the butler, wasn’t she? The one thingthey never did was share how they were feeling with the other and she was justgoing to have to waltz in there and tell him that this was confusing her!
Well, maybe she could phrase it so that he knew it waspissing her off, more than anything else…
Either way, she had to steel herself, straighten out herback to look like the calm, collected, powerful producer she presented to theworld, and pushed open the front door to the mansion.
…………………………………………..
He’d washed and polished the kitchen countertops until theywere so clean, Niles could see his own miserable countenance reflected back inthem.
He could see the clock hanging on the wall in them, too. Twelvehours. Just twelve hours ago, he’d been having the time of his life with MissBabcock. They’d had drinks, they’d laughed (alone together and with people hebarely remembered the names of now), they’d danced…
And then he’d led her in and out of a dip, and his mouth hadtaken over before his brain could remind it of their combined place in realityand the nature of things.
He could still see her laughing in the aftermath. And then, once she’d clearly seen that he was serious, stepping out of his arms andsnatching up her purse, before she hurried out in a flurry of form-huggingdress and pieces of torn-up cheque that fluttered back to the floor like snow.
He remembered, and he felt the talons of humiliation digdeep into his chest. Out of all the things that could’ve possibly come out ofhis mouth, why did it have to be that?! Why couldn’t it have been a zinger, like “From this distance, you can truly appreciate the red that comes out inyour eyes”?
Or, even better still, why couldn’t it have just been plain, good old-fashioned silence?
“I know I stand inline until you think you have the time to spend an evening with me-”
Cringing at the beginnings of the all-too familiar song,Niles smacked at the cd player he’d been listening to while he worked until theblasted thing shut off. Wonderful. Now even Sinatra was mocking him. And whyshouldn’t he? The man was the complete opposite of him, a mere butler – thepersonification of everything cool and smooth and charming. He could have anywoman he wanted (and often did).
And the one woman Niles (until recently, secretly) knew thathe wanted? She’d run out of the mansion like there was a bloody fire after he’dsaid the stupidest thing he possibly could have.
He’d ruined everything, by letting her know. Why would sheeven give him the time of day, now that she really knew what he thought of her?Felt for her? The only reason she’d paid attention before was because sheenjoyed the challenge of an adversary, particularly one as lowly as a servantwho seemed to be getting too big for his boots by standing up to his “betters”.
Now that she knew the truth, all of that was gone.
The song really had been the right fit, and perhaps it wastrying to prove it by playing over and over again in his head, no matter howmuch he tried to block it out or think of something else.
Well, he’d heard one way of getting it out was to sing it,and it wasn’t as though there was anybody home to disturb him (Mr. Sheffield hadhad to go to the theatre, the children were at school, Miss Fine was outshopping and…well, as far as he knew Miss Babcock hadn’t come in yet). He couldprobably get it out of him that way and then get on with the rest of his day(whilst hopefully avoiding the one person in the house that he absolutely knew wouldn’twant to see him).
So, taking in a deep breath, he began from where the songhad left off.
“And if we go someplace to dance, I know that there’s achance you won’t be leaving with me…”
…………………………………
She could hear him singing to himself as she approached thekitchen door.
“And afterwards, we drop into a quiet little place and havea drink or two…”
Of course, it would be something easy to croon along to ashe went about his work. If he was doing his work, that was, and not just satthere smirking away like the Cheshire Cat because he’d managed to pull one overon her and she hadn’t been able to do a single thing about it.
The fact that he’d managed to get this close to driving herinsane over one little prank nearly threw her off, but ignoring the impromptumusical performance and bursting through the door put her back on the righttrack – it made her feel powerful, and she knew that from there, she could getstraight to the point.
She was going to get straight to the point. There was nobacking out now.
Not when he’d noticed she was there and had stopped singing.
She marched across the kitchen and stopped just the otherside of the counter, a few feet from her target, “You and I need to have aword.”
“We do?” he sounded…weirdly low. Like not every dream he’dever had had just come true, or like Christmas had come early that year. What was upwith that? Shouldn’t he have been celebrating getting his little victory? “I honestlythought you’d made your point clearly enough when you ran out of here lastnight.”
He then turned away again.
C.C. couldn’t help it, but she nearly openly gawked at himfor saying what he’d said. And for immediately cutting her off! She couldn’tbelieve that he had the gall to turn back to suddenly doing all the chores thatseemed to materialise into importance the minute she had something important tosay!
She took another step towards him, letting her heels clickloudly against the floor, “My point? What about yours?”
Niles only just turned his head to reply, “I don’t know whatyou could be talking about, Miss Bab-”
“Oh, stop it, Niles! You know exactly what you said andthat’s what I want to know about!” she snapped, pointing at him in anaccusatory manner.
That, and the words, seemed to grab the butler’s attention.
He turned fully that time, his voice raised, “What couldthere possibly be left to say that you still have to know about?!”
“Like, why you said it, perhaps?!” C.C. cried out, gesturingin a sweeping motion at the tiles in front of her. “I’ve been up and down myapartment floors all night, trying to work out why the hell you came out withthat when we both know that’s not how this all works! Was it some kind of jokethat I’m not getting here?”
“No!” Niles replied, his voice just as loud.
The producer tried again, “A prank that you haven’t pulledoff the grand finale to?!”
The butler looked…almost offended, even by the words, “No!”
“Then why the hell did you say it?!” C.C. demanded, almostat the point of shouting at the top of her lungs.
“Because it’s the truth!”
Nothing had physically happened to make her stagger, butC.C. suddenly felt herself stumble a little. She might’ve been ready to shoutmere seconds ago, but Niles’ answer took the air out of her lungs and seemed totake all the sound out of the atmosphere around them, too.
It took all the willpower she had to shake herself out ofit, before her voice came back just as strong and twelve times as disbelieving.
“I’m sorry, it’s what now?!”
“It’s the truth!” Niles shouted back. Then he hesitated, before finishing what he wanted to say. “I…I meant every word of what I said.”
So, that explained the Sinatra. It wasn’t just some randomsong choice, or even a smug happiness felt at his own victory – he’d actuallybeen thinking of her and meaning it the whole time!
The realisation of what that meant hit a few seconds afterthat.
He’d…been thinking of her the whole time…!
The producer had to get the thought out of her head, beforethe rush of blood and adrenaline cut off the blood supply to her legs and shecollapsed on the floor.
Niles…meant it?! But…but weren’t they supposed to be enemies? Wasn’t thatthe whole point of this little…thing…they had going on?!
“You did?” she didn’t like that her voice came out soundingso distressed. She had to force it to make it angrier. “Then what the hell hasbeen going on here for the past decade and a half that I’ve known you?! All thejokes, and the insults, and the pranks?!”
It was Niles’ turn to take a defiant step towards her, “Wouldyou have noticed me if I hadn’t done any of those things?!”
That got under C.C.’s skin enough to make her shoot backwith an insult, “Who wouldn’t notice your bloated butler carcass shuffling itsway around the house?!”
“That’s not a real answer and you know it! Anybody couldrealise that a servant was in the room, going about their work and maybe meeklylooking up to ask if someone required tea, but would you have paid attention?” thebutler countered angrily. He stormed a few more steps towards her. “Seen me asmore than that voice asking if you wanted something to drink; engaged with andspoken to me; called me by my name, even?!”
His questions could only be met with silence. C.C. had nothing;not ready and waiting on her tongue, like usual, or even in her mind! There wasnothing she could do or say to change the fact that she had no argument.
He was right.
As much as part of her would’ve loved to deny it, and shoutfrom the rooftops about how he was wrong, she knew that it would’ve been one ofthe worst lies she’d ever told.
All her life, she’d been told that she wasn’t supposed tomix with servants. That she didn’t mix with servants. Apart from her childhoodnanny, her association with Niles was the most she’d probably ever spoken toone!
She’d never questioned it. And she’d never thought to breakit in any way, until she’d come to work at the mansion. There, she hadn’t beenable to avoid speaking to Niles, and eventually it’d just become…well, like everythingelse that she did in a day.
He was part of her routine, through good and bad. Aconstant, that she couldn’t imagine not being there to hit with a rally of zingers, the moment she walked in the door.
It didn’t matter that he was a servant, at this stage.
Not that Niles knew what she was thinking.
“Well, I suppose I have my answer,” he said with a slight huff, before dropping his eyes away from hers. It looked like the light had gone outof them. “I’m…sorry that I said what I said, even if I can’t take it back. And,as much as I’m sure you won’t believe me on this front, I won’t let itinterfere with my work or yours.”
With all that over with, he turned his back on her and wentover to the stove.
And even though a voice in the back of C.C.’s head (which soundedfar too much like her mother) tried to get her to leave – to just walk out, getto work, and then never ever mention any of this ever again, she just…couldn’t.
She didn’t know what it was (or, maybe she did, and she justwasn’t ready to admit it to herself yet), but she didn’t want to go. She hadn’texactly gone in with any preconceptions of how the talk she’d wanted to have shouldturn out, but it hadn’t been like this!
She’d…wanted better than all of this. They’d had a good timethe night before – they often had good times when it was just the two of them. They’d always crack jokes across conversations so vibrant they practicallyturned electric, staying until long after the last drops of the whiskey or the wine had been drunk, or else they’d end up dancing until everybody else in theroom disappeared.
Smiles broke out between them before they even knew it, andthey both knew – deep down – that maybe they weren’t enemies after all. Theyhad their own routine, their own rhythm…their own language…
It worked and made sense to them, even if nobody else reallyunderstood it.
Her mother certainly wouldn’t understand. But, then again, her mother didn’t understand why she wanted to work in the first place, either. She’d spent her whole life trying to impress that woman, and yet nothing hadcome of it! All she’d seemed to do was end up making herself feel miserable. She’dtried dating rich, powerful men who owned their own skyscrapers and made theFortune 500 every year. But that hadn’t gotten her anywhere, with her mother orthose men. And as much as she tried to make herself feel things for Maxwell, nothingshe could fantasise about felt half as good, fun or right as the thingsshe’d done with Niles.
Maybe it was time to stop all that pretending, and go forwhat felt good, fun and right instead? It wasn’t like she needed money, orpower, or connections. She had all of those already, and she could shake offthat snobbish attitude that her mother had tried to force on her. It wasn’tlike that life had made either of them truly happy (no matter how much B.B.pretended she was), so what did C.C. have to lose?
Perhaps she’d be better off, mixing it up a little?
She pursed her lips briefly. There was really only one wayto find out, wasn’t there? And it involved getting the butler’s attentionagain.
He must’ve thought she’d left, and he was just too caught upin his own misery to hear the swinging door, but he’d started singing once more.
Only this time, he couldn’t sound more put down if he tried.
“And then I go andspoil it all by saying something stupid like-”
C.C. took a step forward, “Niles, wait.”
She thought she saw him jump a little at the sound of hervoice, and perhaps for the first time in her life, she felt bad about having puthim in this position. But she hoped that what she was about to say next wouldchange all of that and set them both on a much better path.
A path that could lead them both to happiness.
She took in a deep breath as she started, “I don’t think I’dbe ready to just…jump in where you are. It’d be a little too soon.”
If it was possible for people to actually physicallydeflate, the producer thought she saw the butler do it right there. It wassubtle, but it was there – like he was disappointed but expecting her to saymore.
He was right, too. She supposed it really did go to showjust how well they knew each other…
She came closer as she spoke, eventually getting closeenough to take both of his hands.
“But…maybe…I wouldn’t say no to another night out. Maybe followedby a couple more? And then we could just…see how it goes from there?”
Niles didn’t look like he could speak at first, and in thatsecond, C.C. felt her stomach drop. Maybe he’d changed his mind? He’d probablybeen thinking about last night all night, too. What if he’d decided tryingsomething out wasn’t the best for either of them, after all?
She was about to let go of his hands, walk out and then planon a life that would involve never speaking ever again, when his spookedexpression finally left enough room for his mouth to open and words to comeout.
“You…you really want to do that?”
There was another moment of silence. And then, a decision was made, once and for all.
C.C. didn’t know where the nerve (or even the thought) to doit had come from (maybe it was the knowledge – relief? – that he wasn’tsuddenly turning around and saying no) but the kiss she found herself givinghim right on the lips felt like a better, clearer answer than anything shecould’ve said right then. Something in her – the business part of her – said itwas like sealing the deal.
It was more than just sealing the deal, really. It was warm, and tender, and as she felt her hands sliding out of his, travelling upwardsand joining around the back of his neck, Niles’ own hands went to her waist andlower back. C.C. felt a pleasant shiver, and she relaxed further into hisembrace.
It was…like they belonged there…
And nothing in her mind could possibly tell her why she’davoided doing this for so long. There weren’t any jokes or pranks here; justtwo people who’d finally decided that maybe pretending to be enemies waspointless and idiotic.
All because one of them had accidentally let out that he’dnever thought she was an enemy in the first place.
Thank God all that drinking had clearly gotten to him!
They had to break away for air eventually, but they stayedin each other’s hold as the rest of the world started to come back into focus.C.C. couldn’t help letting the corners of her mouth twitch upwards into asmirk, either, at the look on the butler’s face.
Now, it looked more like Christmas had come early, or everydream he’d ever had had come true.
“Miss Babcock, I…I really don’t know what to say…!”
Well, there was only one thing the producer thought shecould say to that!
Letting the rest of her mouth follow its corners into agrin, she leaned in just close enough to be partially resting her foreheadagainst his before she answered.
“Say something stupid.”

What data breaches need to be reported?
Thai society has more hopes for eradicating corruption. This is because Thai knowledge, data breach meaning , and attitudes towards corrupt behavior have changed greatly. From having surrendered that it was something that everyone could do and it was the duty of the government or the NCC to prevent and catch cheaters Today, most people besides rejecting and averse to corruption. Also, try to take part in solving problems Do not absorb and haphazard to be a matter of the government anymore The strength in the struggle to overcome the corruption of the public sector has made great progress in the past.
Many works and sacrifices will be discussed below. Is a story that Thai people, business people, government official’s Modern-headed youth the awakened press and scholars have joined forces to fight the corruption that surrounds them.
Thais understand and are ready to fight
Diamond ring case and luxury watch Is a clear example that Whenever false information is released. (Although not intended), Allround checks by the public can take place quickly and efficiently. There is still a lot of corrupt information of politicians and government officials that have been told by the public via online media such as the 'watchdog' page, the page 'must unfold' 'Isara news agency' 'Thai Publica news agency' 'as well as the main media. For example, newspapers, TV, and radio, fraud prevention uk, are more interested in producing programs that address corruption issues.
What is more pleasant to know that Today people are not waiting for what the government will do to prevent or catch fraud. But many people are ready to join in and do it themselves. Just ask the state to open up to support the public disclosure policy in accordance with international standards. Along with protecting him to have the right to have a voice have the freedom of expression this allows him to unite and fight to expose fraud without fear of intimidation like in the past.
This fact can be confirmed by the National Reform Committee's public hearings across the country. Anti-Corruption Including the survey results of the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce and International Transparency Organization
The private sector that cares and takes responsibility
The big and important projects that need to be addressed are: 'Thailand's Private Sector Collective Action Coalition Against Corruption Project' or CAC that wants to tackle corruption with the cooperation of the business sector And joint projects of the capital market business in the establishment There are 11 'Thai Governance Funds' that can raise nearly 4 billion baht in total funds to invest in companies operating socially responsible businesses. And when the fund is profitable, 40% of the funds are shared to support public-led social and anti-corruption programs.
Today there are many well-known companies and young businessmen. Be intentional and take part in making society better. In a method that is self-confident and has resources As a result, personal data breach, we have seen the private sector campaign to become more conscious and socially responsible rather than endlessly pursuing profits, so many good titles have appeared in recent years, such as smart movies, cheating games for teenagers, titles. Corrupt - to stop or let go Sujarit Thai Course A good pocketbook such as the equation of corruption, a dog wagging its tail through the Thai corruption crisis. Organizing an event to do good, hope for a good society, easy 2 minutes, and many other things caused by the need to participate in solving the corruption problem of the country.
Civil servants and taking care of themselves
Together with a new concept that 'Corruption in the bureaucracy will be greatly reduced. If the government officials in the agency do not agree 'and when an offense is detected, the punishment will be arranged, ready to find a solution to prevent immediately. Without having to wait for an external agency such as NACC, NACC, data breach uk, or OAG to inspect first
Important departments like the Anti-Corruption Operation Center of the Ministry (ERA) working closely with government officials Began to be promoted and create understanding with fellow civil servants. This agency is, therefore, more important than the dozens of agencies or committees established by the government of the February or OPEC, and works in duplicate without any tangible results.
The success of the campaign for the announcement of a 'no-not-accepting gifts on the New Year's Eve' policy from young government officials and businessmen in 2017 is also a masterpiece of the National Organization for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives.
Scholars work together to find knowledge to fight to cheat.
Overcoming corruption requires real knowledge and understanding. Rather than beliefs or using feelings to judge what is seen and heard. Over the past year, we have seen a great deal of support and useful research from institutions such as the National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT), the Research Fund (TRF), the NESDB, TDR. IPCC and some foundations, Of course, this knowledge will help us to solve problems at the root cause worthwhile. More to the point
An academic institute of good governance and anti-corruption was established in Rangsit, Nida, Chulalongkorn, and Thammasat universities. There is also a gathering of young scholars such as Siam Lab, Recognize, Cheat, Hand Change, Fusion, 1.2 billion data breach, and many other networks that work together.
Conclusion
These good things are a spark of hope that ensures that 'The trend of the country's corruption situation is improving' Thai people can overcome corruption. But how soon will it be achieved It depends on the support and participation of all Thais. And this is a new dimension in creating a better future for Thailand.

Title: Jesus is your present help
If ever you think the Lord is too late in meeting your need, listen to what Pastor Prince shared on Sunday.
He said the bible tells us by the time Jesus arrived at Lazarus’ tomb, he had been dead for four days. Martha, the sister of Lazarus, said to Jesus: “Lord if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” And when Jesus told her: “Your brother will rise again,” she responded with “I know that he will rise again on the resurrection on the last day. (John 11:20-24).
Pastor Prince said Martha pushed Jesus to the past when she said the Lord “should have been here earlier”; and to the future when she said “I know he will rise again on the resurrection on the last day.”
What she didn’t realise was the present presence of Jesus was her answer. Why? Because Jesus replied: “I am the resurrection and the life (John 11:25). God is always “I am.” He is not “I was” or “I will be.” Note that in the gospels, no one ever died or stayed dead in the presence of Jesus!
The bible says in Psalm 46:1 that “the Lord is a very present help in time of need.”
Perhaps there are areas in your life that’s experiencing deadness because you are not conscious that Jesus is your very present help in time of need. Be encouraged not to push Jesus to the past by saying He has been late to help you, nor think that your breakthrough can only come in the future when you set yourself right. As the righteousness of God in Christ, nothing separates you from His love and willingness to be your very present help, which means right here, right now!
And all of Rock Kidz say, Amen 🙏!
Jesus is my present help,
Dn Pete

Title: Why we are rich
Last Sunday’s sermon by Pastor Mark was so rich in every sense of the word.
I certainly came away enriched - especially after his revelation behind the word “rich” in Chinese.
Pastor Mark explained that “rich” in Mandarin is made up of three characters: home, one man and field (see visual below).
He said that true riches are found in the house of God, just as it’s told in Luke 15:11-32 of the prodigal son.
The son had left his father’s house for worldly pleasures - only to find himself bankrupt and hungry.
Said Pastor Mark: “Man left God but God never left man. It’s all about the Father loving and pursuing us. Come home to the Father’s love.”
As I meditated on the prodigal son scripture passage, one verse jumped out at me and I wrote my musings:
Luke 15:20:
“But when he was a long way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.”
“But when he was a long way off.”
Sometimes it’s not a physical distancing that is the issue. I may feel I’m far away from God after I’ve failed. Or fallen short. Or if I’ve an unanswered prayer. Or turned down a church invite. Or when I’m hit with persistent sickness.
But even when I feel “I’m a long way off”, I’m not to go by feelings. I’m to seek grace. And it’s by grace that I can live by faith in God’s word which says “my Father is always looking out for me; He sees me; has compassion on me. He will run to me, embrace, and kiss me.”
So it doesn’t matter how I feel. Nor is it really even about my faith, which may waver hour by hour, day by day.
It’s all about the LORD’s unwavering faith in His finished work at the Cross and all that He has accomplished for me.
It is His perfect love that shall cast out my every fear and empower me to come boldly to His throne of grace to receive help and obtain mercy in time of need.
Child of God, enjoy your Father’s love today. Seek His grace. See Him always on the lookout for you - even when you have failed.
The LORD always desires for you to put on “the best robe” which says you are the righteousness of God in Christ; says you are His beloved (ring) and adorns your walk with shalom peace (sandals).
You have been planted in His house that is NCC where the very best food (fatted calf) and joyous times (with music and dancing) have been prepared for you to be blessed!
Let the eyes of your heart be enlightened to know the grace of God and how He loves you richly!
We’re rich in Christ,
Dn Pete

Title: New beginnings
This year, expect the Lord to do a new and unprecedented thing that will be good for your life. So said Pastor Prince at the start of his first sermon of this year, to which we were reminded at RK Team Night on Thursday.
Senior Pastor had also made mention of the Holy Communion, of how when Cleopas and his partner broke bread, their previously-restrained eyes opened and they saw Jesus - the vision for every provision.
However, someone asked me this question yesterday: “What’s so new about taking Holy Communion? I tried before but it didn’t seem to work. What should I do?”
Thankfully, Pastor Prince addresses these very questions in his book “The Healing Power of the Holy Communion.”
Said Senior Pastor: “So you have stopped praying. Stopped hoping. Stopped believing. If any of that seems familiar to you, I have a word for you. May I invite you to give the Lord another chance?”
He added that this was what God said when he was teaching the Israelites to keep the first Passover.
Exodus 12:2 (NKJV)
“This month shall be your beginning of months; it shall be the first month of the year to you.”
Pastor Prince said this speaks of a new beginning: “Today I want to encourage you to take a step of faith. Let this day be your beginning of days. When you put your trust in the Lamb who was slain for you, you are stepping into a new beginning. Forget the former things. Forget the failures and disappointments of the past.”
Pastor said that as we come to the Lord’s Table, we are to trust that we will experience what the Israelites did after partaking of the roasted lamb. Not only did they come out with none feeble and sick, they came out with silver and gold!
I shared Pastor’s teaching on the power of the Holy Communion with that brother.
Plus this testimony of a RK server who attended Team Night on Thursday. She had suffered depression last year but as we were partaking of the Holy Communion together online, she felt “a tangible warmth engulf her”.
That same night, Pastor Lian shared a revelation from Exodus, of how Moses at Rephidim, when the enemies attacked, chose to go up the mountain and lift his hands, while Joshua fought below. And whenever Moses kept his arms lifted, the Israelites gained the upper hand in battle.
She said Moses’ lifted hands is a picture of Jesus at the Cross crying out “It is Finished!” So whenever we lift up the bread and declare the finished work of Christ over any situation or condition, we emerge victorious!
And so my bro was encouraged. He said he is going to give God another chance and believe that the LORD will do a new and unprecedented thing for him this year. He then agreed to pray the exact words that Pastor Prince wrote in his book, which I encourage you to take as your prayer when you partake today too:
“Lord Jesus, thank You that You are a God of new beginnings, new life, and a new future. I declare that my trust is in You, the Lamb who was slain for me. I declare that I’m stepping into a brand-new beginning as I partake of the Holy Communion today. I choose not to focus on past disappointments. I believe the new has come and my breakthrough is at hand, in Jesus name, Amen 🙏 !
To new beginnings with Him,
Dn Pete "

Indian Political News Eliminating the threat of Hoax stories
The True Picture: Eliminating the threat of Hoax stories
“Smriti Irani distributing 10,000 cows in Amethi, funded by a Gujrat-based company under the CSR programme.A Dalit youth was killed in Gujrat for riding a horse. An NCC cadet, who posed questions to Rahul Gandhi and exposed his ignorance of the NCC, was a member of ABVP and thus a political operative.”
The above-written news stories were at one point in time making rounds in the mainstream media as leading stories. The general public, whoever read these stories did believe these stories for once. It is a proven fact that a general reader does not have time to verify the news stories and tends to form opinions and decisions based on the stories that they read in any form of media. The opinions and views thus formed effects the Indian democracy in one way or the other. Whether it’s the indian economy news stories or indian political news stories, the fabricated news does alter the minds of the influencers all over India.
Let’s say, if, readers take out time and start verifying the news and stories that they read in the mainstream media still it will be challenging for them to find out the sources of the fabricated news if any. Due to the sheer vastness of the internet and social media users, it has become quite tough to track the origin of the fake news. The examples of fake or hoax news are endless and possess a significant threat to Indian democracy. Because of the urgency to share the latest piece of information first to the readers, journalist quite often present stories without applying a proper fact check india and cook up stories from their point of view. This has become a dominant reason behind the altered views, decisions, and opinions negatively.
To tackle the pressing issue of fake, fabricated or hoax news in the present media world, indian political news has risen to the occasion and strived towards bringing the truth and nothing but the truth. The news and stories as mentioned earlier were among the first four news stories that were initially busted by the True Picture. The Fact Check method and media analysis India technique used extensively by the data science team of the website has made it possible to bring the news and stories in a better light than ever. The true picture team uses the modern natural language processing techniques to check the authenticity and writes factually true stories by using both the qualitative and quantitative data trends.
They do not focus on any single form of news or stories; they dig deep for indian economy news stories, stories, entertainment news stories, sports news stories and other genres that are leading the mainstream media. The True Picture team study the subject in-depth and bring out valuable details and data from authentic sources by applying the fact check india and Media analysis India techniques most efficiently and effectively possible. The data journalism india gets benefitted from this website a lot. The True picture acts as an extension to data journalism india. The facts, figures, and accuracy in data are required in this type of journalism and the True Picture as a whole, works earnestly to bring the same precision and authenticity to the news and stories they handle. This slowly and gradually solving a severe issue of hoax or fake news in today's journalism world.
