Strategy Session

Fandom: Debris (TV)

Notes: Fill for “34. Playing with their hair to calm them down.” From this list. Started this around 6/19/23 before it languished. Had to rework paragraph order and details in this draft till I felt happy with it.

Frown lines had appeared in between Bryan’s brows, and it was this, more than anything, that told Finola he was upset.

“What is it?” she asked, keeping her voice low in the dark quiet of her kitchen.

He didn’t answer right away, instead continuing to stare down at the papers littering the table before him.

“I just…didn’t think I’d be back here. Planning strategy. It reminds me of my days before the CIA…”

“When you were in…MARSOC?” She pronounced the acronym hesitantly, not sure if she might be pushing him farther than he wanted to go by saying the word.

He scrubbed a hand over his face, and she took his silence as an affirmative.

Bryan had shown up at her doorstep several hours ago with a locked silver briefcase in hand, claiming he needed her help. She had let him in, half-believing his excuse and half-suspecting that he mostly desired her company. Since she hadn’t felt like being alone either, she had let him in and brewed him a pot of coffee and a pot of tea for herself.

After an initial review of the documents he had brought in the briefcase, she had left him to it, determining that the work would first be about moving people and equipment to a Debris site, then how to get any findings from the field to a lab that was inaccessible, mostly due to geographical features.

She had patted him on the shoulder in sympathy with one hand while the other had held her steaming cup of tea. “You’ll figure something out,” she had said.

Now, he slumped forward in his seat, and she rose from the table to stand behind him and take a look at his notes over his shoulder.

He had marked out directions and notational instructions on maps and listed personnel and equipment needed for getting to the Debris site, but the problem appeared to be how to get any samples or other findings from there to the closest lab that was several miles away. Conditions prevented a mobile lab setup near the Debris itself, something Bryan had repeatedly complained about as the night had wore on.

Something else he had done was mess up his hair. After hours spent alternating between running a hand through it and resting his head on the table in frustration or weariness, strands were sticking up every which way. After some internal debate with herself, Finola began to very gingerly smooth the strands back into place.

“What mountain roads there are out there have become impassable without blasting through rock,” Bryan said now, “and we can’t fly over them every time we find something.” He added in a mumble, “Not that either of those things would be approved by the budgeting office in the first place.”

All the while he had been speaking, her fingers had continued to absently card themselves through his hair, and silence fell over them while she finished scanning his notes.

“So? Any breakthroughs?” he asked hopefully, and she smiled but shook her head.

“Sorry, nothing yet.” She glanced down and saw that his mug was empty. “Do you want some more coffee? I can make another pot,” she offered.

He tilted his head back to look up at her, forcing her fingers to bury themselves more deeply into his scalp.

She froze in place at the contact, feeling her face grow warm at having been so obviously caught combing Bryan’s hair. Her lips parted to say something but he spoke before she could.

“Coffee…” he repeated. He bolted from his chair and picked up his phone from the table. “Finola, did I ever tell you you’re a genius?”

“No,” she said with a laugh, grateful she could extricate her hand from his hair and return it to the side of her tea cup without a word about it.

“Well, you are. Thank you.” He squeezed her upper arm in a gesture of gratitude before he stepped into the next room to make his phone call.

“Hey, Brandt,” she heard him say. “Patch in Tom for me. I want to run something by you both.”

He was soon reseated at her kitchen table, reading aloud every so often from the maps and lists he had made up and responding to whatever Tom or Brandt said.

By the time he finished his call thirty minutes later, Finola thought she had figured out his solution.

“Robotics and telecom?” she asked.

Bryan nodded, his worry lines now gone. “Yeah,” he said. “Like making coffee.” He looked pointedly at the coffeemaker on Finola’s counter. “The machine does the work for us. We send in the bots, view results on their scopes and cameras…Brandt says we should be in business, and Tom’s working on getting the equipment and techs that we need.”

“Well, congratulations.” She clinked her tea cup against his refilled coffee mug and took a sip of the fresh herbal tea she had brewed while he had been on the phone. “I had complete confidence in you.”

“Couldn’t have done it without you,” he demurred, bringing his mug to his lips.

According to NBC here in the US, the missing titanic sub has been found. As debris. Off the bow of the Titanic wreckage.

And it looks like the sub suffered what we all suspected, and what was undoubtedly the more merciful of the two options: a catastrophic implosion from the pressure.

Also, more info has come to light about the fishing trawler with the hundreds of migrants that sank cataclysmically off the coast of Greece, indicating that the greek coast guard knew about the vessel AND how much trouble the vessel was in, and were towing it at a speed that made it capsize, at which point they unhooked the tow line and watched the trawler sink without helping the passengers to safety. Despite a bunch of other ships trying to help as well throughout the whole ordeal.

So a lot of people are dead, all because of regulations (and the lack thereof) regarding sea-faring vessels and rescue protocols. People shouldnt be allowed to make a business charging a ton of money for a ride on an uncertified, unsafe, un-seaworthy ship going deep into the ocean with no distress beacon or tether to the mothership. People also shouldnt be allowed to enact laws that criminalize the ferrying of refugees, which then force the refugees to hitch rides on fishing trawlers, and which also prevent people from helping those fishing trawlers full of refugees due to fear of legal consequences.

Hopefully BOTH of these events spark changes on an international scale in terms of what is legally allowed to be sailed, who is legally allowed to be the passengers, and what the rescue protocols are in the event of disaster for any seafaring vessel, illegal or not. It shouldnt be just the global 1% who get 24/7 search parties and remote-operated submersibles helping rescue them.

#the question of 'what do we owe to each other' can be answered simply with 'the dignity of retrieving our remains when we die' #another answer is 'the dignity of thinking about each other fellow humans with similar motivations and feelings' #also 'stopping someones potentially self-destructive behaviors just because theyre rich and want to feel special' #also i feel like humans have been sailing the seas long enough that it should be guaranteed that people will survive sea voyages #im very mad about specifically mediterranean maritime disasters because we have ancient writing saying they made it safe #sailing from Egypt to Greece was so old hat and safe that people legit took the ancient equivalent of cruises back and forth #cleopatra habitually sailed from alexandria to rome with a ton of ships and was fine #Nero tried to have his mother drowned at sea by orchestrating a dramatic shipwreck while she was our sailing AND SHE SURVIVED #and then swam to shore got back to rome and whooped his ass #fuckin pliny the elder tried to evacuate people from pompeii and the surrounding coast villages when vesuvius erupted #and he actually WAS able to rescue people #but he himself had an asthma attack from the fumes which led to a heart attack and he died on the beach #there is legit no excuse for that trawler of migrant refugees to have wrecked #negligence all around #anyway #oceangate

Unforeseen Consequences

Fandom: Debris (TV)

Notes: Fill for "5. Looking at one another in times of doubt for reassurance." From this list. Set after 1.13 and more of a "post-1.09 and 1.10" fic. This one was interesting. I tried different takes on this and then got some inspiration all of a sudden. (Circa 6/28/23)

Bryan felt the familiar disorienting sensation as he entered a reality again. He wasn't back in a car, or underwater as he last remembered being. He was on dry land, in a.... He glanced around, seeing rock walls around him. He appeared to be in a cave.

And he wasn't alone.

Bryan couldn’t help himself. He reached out and touched Finola on the shoulder. She stood motionless beside him. He felt the softness of her black cotton sweater, the firm muscle and smooth skin of her body beneath it. After so many instances of looking at the same woman through the thinning barrier between realities, he needed to feel her to know she was real and actually with him.

She tensed at his touch, signaling him that something was wrong. The fear and anxiety he felt within him were mirrored in her large brown eyes, along with something else.

Unfamiliarity.

She didn’t know him.

“You’re not—“ he caught himself from saying “my Finola” just in time. “—the Finola from my reality.” Reluctantly, he withdrew his hand from her shoulder.

“I don’t think we’re in my reality either,” she said, also looking around at the cave they were in. “I jumped into the water. Like we agreed?” She gave him a glance to confirm he knew what she was talking about, and he nodded. "But we're here in a... cave?"

"If we're both here," Bryan said slowly, "does that mean the jump worked? Did we reset things?"

Finola could only shake her head from side-to-side, as much at a loss as he was, but she performed the movement slowly, allowing her to continue to hold his gaze.

"You've done well," a new voice announced. "But our work isn't done."

Both Orbital agents whirled around to face their visitor, an older man with a grim expression on his lined face. The stranger offered them a mirthless smile, his black suit only enhancing the unease he inspired.

"How did we get here?" Bryan asked.

Finola followed his question with "And what do you want with us?"

The man held up a lantern to better light their surroundings. "Have you heard of 'suspensia?'" he asked. When they both nodded, he added, "Well, it works. As for what I want..." He paused, and turned as a ball of light floated towards him and stopped at his shoulder. "We need your help....to save the world."

Finola uttered a quiet gasp, her mouth forming a perfect "o" at seeing the strange light, while Bryan took a step forward to instinctively put himself between his ally and the other party.

Another shadow joined theirs on the cave floor as another figure approached. A Native American man wearing a flannel shirt and jeans, his dark hair tied in a braid, gave Bryan and Finola an understanding smile.

"Good evening," he greeted. "You two probably have many questions."

Bryan glanced back at Finola, whose fingers had latched onto the sleeve of his jacket. Once again, he saw his own emotion in her eyes. This time, it was disbelief.

Like they had in the house with Shelby and Kathleen, the two agents communicated silently.

Bryan raised his eyebrows in a question. What do you want to do? to which Finola responded with a nod, the surprise in her eyes melting into a hardened resolve.

Let’s hear them out.

They would listen to these men and go from there.

Bryan nodded back, agreeing that there was no harm in that. He turned back to the two strangers and the floating ball of white light.

“So,” he began, “when you say ‘save the world,’ what exactly are we talking here? Because I think we just jumped from the frying pan into the fire.”

The dark-haired man chuckled. “That may be so,” he agreed. “But you’ll need to do it again.”

Gift Giving ,, Thomas loves giving gifts to you, small trinkets he’ll find off his victims or around town. He’ll even try to make you some out of scrap metal and debris. He enjoys seeing your face light up whenever he gifted you something. It was a gratifying exchange.

Physical Affection ,, Although Thomas isn’t much of a physical guy, he does enjoy when you hug him or give him small kisses. The actions are always so sweet, it’s hard to not like them. He also enjoys giving affection, enjoying hugging you the most. He feels calm when he holds you, protective even.

Quality Time ,, Alongside acts of service, Michael enjoys spending time with you. He likes knowing where you are, being aware of your current status in case anything might change. He doesn’t say this but your presence calms him in ways he’s never been calmed. Its odd for him at first, but he learns to accept it and take it as it is.

Physical Affection ,, Brahms is a major physical person, always demanding attention in the form of hugs, kisses, or sometimes sex. There is never a moment where Brahms isn’t touching you, even if the touch is small such as a hand gently holding the bottom of your shirt sleeve as he watches you cook.

Words of Affirmation ,, Brahms enjoys receiving words of affirmation. He enjoys being told he’s done something good. However, because he enjoys hearing those words so much, he assumes you would too, leading to him constantly affirming you with anything you do. Even if the action is pointless, Brahms will give you his approval. Even when you’re doing nothing, Brahms will give you his approval. Affirmations will spill from his lips more than they spill from yours.

Quality Time ,, Another love language of Brahms is quality time. He’s always scared that one day you’ll leave so he tries to stay near you as much as possible. He wants to hang out with, love you, for as long he can in case the worst comes to fruition.

Words of Affirmation ,, Hannibal likes telling you when you’ve done a good job, when you’ve excelled in something you thought against. He doesn’t like the fact you work so hard, wanting to provide from himself. However, due to your circumstances, you’re forced to work till it feels like your back will break. Gift Giving ,, Another one of Harry’s love languages is gift giving. He likes gifting you jewelry, especially necklaces because he likes the way it looks against the skin of your neck. He also enjoys the way your face would light up at the new piece, you’re always so happy to wear the jewelry his buys you. He thinks it’s cute the ways your eyes will shine at the jewelry, it brings him joy and causes his heart to swell.

Gift Giving ,, Lester enjoys making little ornaments for you out of the remains of the animals. He’ll make necklaces and charms to hang on your belt. Whenever you wear his gifts, a mixture of pride and love will swell within him at the sight of you appreciating the gifts he crafted for you.

Quality Time ,, Outside of hunting, Lester is a sucker for quiet snuggles. He enjoys laying down with his head in your chest, you’re arms wrapped firmly around him. He likes to know that you’re laying right below him, happy to hold him as he rests his eyes after a long day of hunting. He deeply enjoys it when you rub his back, something that practically gets him purring like a cat.

Physical Affection ,, Lester is a major physical guy, enjoying anything as long as it means he gets to hold you, kiss you, or anything that allows him just to touch you. The mere contact of his skin against yours is enough to calm him. Whenever you move away, he deeply craves your touch until you allow him to touch you again.

See the thing about Bryan and Finola is that Finola is THE only thing Bryan has, she's his one thing. He doesn't have anything else so honestly that's what makes him so insane. Finola has other things, her work and her father and her sister but Byran has NOTHING so yeah he goes a little crazy and that's honestly such an interesting character dynamic; a person who cares about everyone and a person who only has one thing they care about left.

Top 5 jonathan characters ✨

Since you’re my Tucker bestie and you’ve seen most of his roles, I’m going to go into 5 more obscure characters just for you :3

1. Matthew (100 Girls)

This is the only romcom he’s done but it’s actually in my top 3 of the genre. The jokes are a little dated at this point but it’s like a nostalgia flick for me. It’s from the American Pie era of comedy movies but at least this one had some intelligent writing. His character was actually very respectful towards women, and that was so refreshing to watch for the type of movie it was. I also loved the scenes of him in drag because he makes a very pretty girl (and a convincing one too). A lot of times, when male actors pretend to be women they tend to play up the “bimbo” stereotype, but his character actually acted like a regular girl. It’s just a nice mood booster and I watch it like once a month.

2. Heck Prigusivac (Love Comes to the Executioner)

Jonathan has such good comedic timing, and some of the lines are so memorable to me. I love the ridiculous story, and the absurdist humor especially when he’s in scenes with Jeremy Renner, who plays his brother on death row. They just don’t make movies like this anymore (and good luck finding it anywhere).

Heck’s mother: What did Chick ever do to deserve this?

Heck: It’s called “multiple homicide”.

It’s on par with Hannibal jokes for me.

3. Boon (Justified)

I love him for the hair alone. Where can I find me a stalker cowboy with a bowl cut?

4. Shane Loakin (Meskada)

Plot? Who cares. The ending? One of the worst I’ve ever seen. Does he look insanely hot and I love his character? Yes and yes.

5. Bryan Beneventi (Debris)

Texan, only child, wears a necklace with a wolf insignia — GIVE ME MORE! At least we got one season, and some good whump (seizures 🤤). Some of the episodes were so awesome like the parallel universe ones, and I seriously got chills at times. So much potential but NBC just has to cancel anything good so it sucks we’ll never know how the debris damaged his body and what the injections are for (& the sex pollen fics are hot af).

We've lived to witness another historical event. And the ironic thing is that in a 110 years time or whatever, some dumbass is going to build a ripoff submersible to tour the debris of the Titanic and the Titan.
