Unforeseen Consequences

Notes: Fill for "5. Looking at one another in times of doubt for reassurance." From this list. Set after 1.13 and more of a "post-1.09 and 1.10" fic. This one was interesting. I tried different takes on this and then got some inspiration all of a sudden. (Circa 6/28/23)

Bryan felt the familiar disorienting sensation as he entered a reality again. He wasn't back in a car, or underwater as he last remembered being. He was on dry land, in a.... He glanced around, seeing rock walls around him. He appeared to be in a cave.

And he wasn't alone.

Bryan couldn’t help himself. He reached out and touched Finola on the shoulder. She stood motionless beside him. He felt the softness of her black cotton sweater, the firm muscle and smooth skin of her body beneath it. After so many instances of looking at the same woman through the thinning barrier between realities, he needed to feel her to know she was real and actually with him.

She tensed at his touch, signaling him that something was wrong. The fear and anxiety he felt within him were mirrored in her large brown eyes, along with something else.

Unfamiliarity.

She didn’t know him.

“You’re not—“ he caught himself from saying “my Finola” just in time. “—the Finola from my reality.” Reluctantly, he withdrew his hand from her shoulder.

“I don’t think we’re in my reality either,” she said, also looking around at the cave they were in. “I jumped into the water. Like we agreed?” She gave him a glance to confirm he knew what she was talking about, and he nodded. "But we're here in a... cave?"

"If we're both here," Bryan said slowly, "does that mean the jump worked? Did we reset things?"

Finola could only shake her head from side-to-side, as much at a loss as he was, but she performed the movement slowly, allowing her to continue to hold his gaze.

"You've done well," a new voice announced. "But our work isn't done."

Both Orbital agents whirled around to face their visitor, an older man with a grim expression on his lined face. The stranger offered them a mirthless smile, his black suit only enhancing the unease he inspired.

"How did we get here?" Bryan asked.

Finola followed his question with "And what do you want with us?"

The man held up a lantern to better light their surroundings. "Have you heard of 'suspensia?'" he asked. When they both nodded, he added, "Well, it works. As for what I want..." He paused, and turned as a ball of light floated towards him and stopped at his shoulder. "We need your help....to save the world."

Finola uttered a quiet gasp, her mouth forming a perfect "o" at seeing the strange light, while Bryan took a step forward to instinctively put himself between his ally and the other party.

Another shadow joined theirs on the cave floor as another figure approached. A Native American man wearing a flannel shirt and jeans, his dark hair tied in a braid, gave Bryan and Finola an understanding smile.

"Good evening," he greeted. "You two probably have many questions."

Bryan glanced back at Finola, whose fingers had latched onto the sleeve of his jacket. Once again, he saw his own emotion in her eyes. This time, it was disbelief.

Like they had in the house with Shelby and Kathleen, the two agents communicated silently.

Bryan raised his eyebrows in a question. What do you want to do? to which Finola responded with a nod, the surprise in her eyes melting into a hardened resolve.

Let’s hear them out.

They would listen to these men and go from there.

Bryan nodded back, agreeing that there was no harm in that. He turned back to the two strangers and the floating ball of white light.

“So,” he began, “when you say ‘save the world,’ what exactly are we talking here? Because I think we just jumped from the frying pan into the fire.”

The dark-haired man chuckled. “That may be so,” he agreed. “But you’ll need to do it again.”

See the thing about Bryan and Finola is that Finola is THE only thing Bryan has, she's his one thing. He doesn't have anything else so honestly that's what makes him so insane. Finola has other things, her work and her father and her sister but Byran has NOTHING so yeah he goes a little crazy and that's honestly such an interesting character dynamic; a person who cares about everyone and a person who only has one thing they care about left.

The little chapel’s ring selection included gold rings and silver ones, delicate circles and thick bands in varying, glittering shades.

“Which ones do you like?” Finola asked Bryan, who stood next to her, watching her gaze roam over the rings nestled in their velvet tray.

“Something with a thicker band,” he admitted, missing the familiar weight of his necklace against his chest. He had taken it off for the ceremony, and Finola seemed to sense his distress.

“It’ll be over soon,” she assured him.

“It’s not that. Not really. I’ll get you a real ring,” he promised. “Something with a diamond. Something you deserve.”

“I appreciate the sentiment, but time is of the essence.” She plucked two rings from the tray—thick, plain silver bands that were perfectly identical.

“Let’s get married,” she finished.

According to NBC here in the US, the missing titanic sub has been found. As debris. Off the bow of the Titanic wreckage.

And it looks like the sub suffered what we all suspected, and what was undoubtedly the more merciful of the two options: a catastrophic implosion from the pressure.

Also, more info has come to light about the fishing trawler with the hundreds of migrants that sank cataclysmically off the coast of Greece, indicating that the greek coast guard knew about the vessel AND how much trouble the vessel was in, and were towing it at a speed that made it capsize, at which point they unhooked the tow line and watched the trawler sink without helping the passengers to safety. Despite a bunch of other ships trying to help as well throughout the whole ordeal.

So a lot of people are dead, all because of regulations (and the lack thereof) regarding sea-faring vessels and rescue protocols. People shouldnt be allowed to make a business charging a ton of money for a ride on an uncertified, unsafe, un-seaworthy ship going deep into the ocean with no distress beacon or tether to the mothership. People also shouldnt be allowed to enact laws that criminalize the ferrying of refugees, which then force the refugees to hitch rides on fishing trawlers, and which also prevent people from helping those fishing trawlers full of refugees due to fear of legal consequences.

Hopefully BOTH of these events spark changes on an international scale in terms of what is legally allowed to be sailed, who is legally allowed to be the passengers, and what the rescue protocols are in the event of disaster for any seafaring vessel, illegal or not. It shouldnt be just the global 1% who get 24/7 search parties and remote-operated submersibles helping rescue them.

Gift Giving ,, Thomas loves giving gifts to you, small trinkets he’ll find off his victims or around town. He’ll even try to make you some out of scrap metal and debris. He enjoys seeing your face light up whenever he gifted you something. It was a gratifying exchange.

Physical Affection ,, Although Thomas isn’t much of a physical guy, he does enjoy when you hug him or give him small kisses. The actions are always so sweet, it’s hard to not like them. He also enjoys giving affection, enjoying hugging you the most. He feels calm when he holds you, protective even.

Quality Time ,, Alongside acts of service, Michael enjoys spending time with you. He likes knowing where you are, being aware of your current status in case anything might change. He doesn’t say this but your presence calms him in ways he’s never been calmed. Its odd for him at first, but he learns to accept it and take it as it is.

There is never a moment where Brahms isn’t touching you, even if the touch is small such as a hand gently holding the bottom of your shirt sleeve as he watches you cook.

Words of Affirmation ,, Brahms enjoys receiving words of affirmation. He enjoys being told he’s done something good. However, because he enjoys hearing those words so much, he assumes you would too, leading to him constantly affirming you with anything you do. Even if the action is pointless, Brahms will give you his approval. Even when you’re doing nothing, Brahms will give you his approval. Affirmations will spill from his lips more than they spill from yours.

Quality Time ,, Another love language of Brahms is quality time. He’s always scared that one day you’ll leave so he tries to stay near you as much as possible. He wants to hang out with, love you, for as long he can in case the worst comes to fruition.

Words of Affirmation ,, Hannibal likes telling you when you’ve done a good job, when you’ve excelled in something you thought against. He also enjoys singing you praises when you’re alone, small things to bring a smile to your face. He likes physical contact but prefers to verbally express his affection to you. After all, words are his strong suit.

He likes seeing you happy and you never fail to show your smile when he caresses your skin.

Acts of Service ,, Harry loves to give you massages after you come back from a long day at work. He likes receiving them, however, he enjoys rubbing the stress out of you back more. He doesn’t like the fact you work so hard, wanting to provide from himself. However, due to your circumstances, you’re forced to work till it feels like your back will break. Harry, wanting to provide for you, will massage your back till it feels brand new, no matter how tired his arms get.

Gift Giving ,, Another one of Harry’s love languages is gift giving. He likes gifting you jewelry, especially necklaces because he likes the way it looks against the skin of your neck. He also enjoys the way your face would light up at the new piece, you’re always so happy to wear the jewelry his buys you. He thinks it’s cute the ways your eyes will shine at the jewelry, it brings him joy and causes his heart to swell.

Quality Time ,, Outside of hunting, Lester is a sucker for quiet snuggles. He enjoys laying down with his head in your chest, you’re arms wrapped firmly around him. He likes to know that you’re laying right below him, happy to hold him as he rests his eyes after a long day of hunting. He deeply enjoys it when you rub his back, something that practically gets him purring like a cat.

Physical Affection ,, Lester is a major physical guy, enjoying anything as long as it means he gets to hold you, kiss you, or anything that allows him just to touch you. The mere contact of his skin against yours is enough to calm him. Whenever you move away, he deeply craves your touch until you allow him to touch you again.

Dominion lawsuit against Fox News.

         After our brief foray into lovely Northern Ireland, let's return to the meltdown at the center of Trump's world, a.k.a. the Dominion Voting Systems v. Fox News lawsuit in Delaware. Going into a major trial is like entering a blast furnace—weak points melt, debris incinerates, and all that is left is the unalloyed truth. It can be a painful process—and usually is. Unfortunately for Fox, in the lawsuit brought by Dominion, the truth is stacked on the Dominion side of the ledger, meaning that Fox News's case is going up in flames.

         Fox News and its attorneys have lost all credibility with the judge. On the eve of trial, Dominion continues to produce information from third parties that is in the possession of Fox News and should have been produced in discovery by Fox—but was not. See The Hill, Judge sanctions Fox News for withholding evidence in Dominion lawsuit.

         That is a very bad development for Fox on the eve of trial. The judge has appointed a special master to determine if Fox or its attorneys made deliberate misrepresentations to the court. And the Court has issued sanctions against Fox, requiring it to pay for additional depositions and discovery demanded by Dominion.

         Here's the point: Like Trump, Fox News assumed that it could get away with bending the truth because no one would hold it accountable. It now finds itself in a trial where truth matters, and representations to the judge cannot be treated like fact-free commentary from Tucker Carlson.

         It is a healthy process for the leadership of Fox to see that their disregard for truth and journalistic standards can affect the bottom line. Shareholders have now filed a lawsuit in Delaware against the Fox Board of Directors for breaching their fiduciary duty in failing to prevent the dissemination of false information. NBC News, Rupert Murdoch and Fox Corp. board members sued by investor over 'stolen election claims'.

         Whatever else happens, there is an internal reckoning occurring at Fox that will remove editorial control from the hands of Rupert and Lachlan Murdoch and put it in the hands of oversight committees, editors, and compliance officers. The Dominion Voting Systems lawsuit should have a positive effect on journalism in America, no matter the outcome.
