Buffalo Nichols & Nathan Graham Live Show Review: 2/4, Judson & Moore, Chicago
BY JORDAN MAINZER
Saturday night at Judson & Moore Distillery, Buffalo Nichols delivered a simply enrapturing set. If his 25-minute, 8-song self-titled solo debut was raw and to the point, the live adaptations of its songs had room to breathe and wander. Incorporating spoken recordings and tons of pedals, Nichols further expanded upon his own world of experimental blues music, soaking his notes in reverb and distortion, emulating with his guitars other string instruments, like sitar. His tunes drifted into the divergent worlds of ambient folk and doomy dirges. When he told me in late 2021 that he had been listening to metal, I was surprised given the type of music he played, but after Saturday, it made a lot of sense. Like the best metal guitarists, Nichols pushed the limits of his instrument to the point where you found yourself having to close your eyes to make sense of what was coming into your ears. How can an instrument that fits my schema of a guitar make that kind of sound?!?
Nichols’ versatility makes him an essential artist. On Saturday, for every sweet acoustic track like “Life Goes On” and “These Things”, there was a solemn song like “Lost & Lonesome”; backed by a handclap backing track, Nichols sang words truer than ever, “You’re going to suffer anyway, but it’s better with a friend.” In introducing “Another Man”, Nichols warned the crowd not to approach him after the show, something he told me was happening too much. “I don’t like to play this song because people come up to me after the show and tell me it’s powerful,” Nichols said. “I know it’s hard, but keep it to yourself.” It’s a song that references various Black victims of police murder over the last number of years, and Nichols made it clear not just for that song, but for any of his songs, that they’re not for the emotional journey of the listener. He ended his set suddenly and earlier than expected, perhaps because of an overly talky crowd, emphasizing that he doesn’t see himself as an entertainer, but a songwriter making songs meaningful to him, based on his own emotional experiences. Isn’t that, if anything, a core tenet of the blues?
Opening for Nichols was local singer-songwriter Nathan Graham, a gravel-throated singer and virtuosic guitarist, whether nimbly strumming his acoustic guitar or scratchily riffing on his electric. From “Fake Friends” and “Somebody Else” to his inspired covers of CSNY’s “Ohio” and “I Shall Be Released” (played in celebration of what would have been Nina Simone’s 90th birthday month), Graham showed that he, too, was multi-faceted, a surefire product of years as a touring guitarist, and an excellent songwriter to boot.

Five Minutes
Nathan Prescott x reader
Summary: you're just trying to study in peace, but you're boyfriend has other ideas...
a/n: the ending is a little shit, but I'm shit at writing smut so here we are.
--------------------------------------------------
"Nathan, not now." You're sat in the middle of your dorm's bed, notes and annotations spread out around you, as you try to study for your upcoming practise exam. It was going pretty well, you managed to get a couple hours of study time in peace, until Nathan had his last class for the day and made a beeline to your room.
"You really gonna give Shakespeare more attention than me?" He has his arms loosely wrapped around your torso from behind, occasionally presses kisses to your cheek and neck to try and tempt you to become putty in his hands.
"When he's worth more than half my grade, yeah." You say back, reading through a page of your annotations.
"Yeah, well, I'm worth more than this whole fucking town so..." Nathan cuts himself off to presses his lips to your neck again.
"Nate." You say sternly, as he tries to spice it up more. To be honest, the words on the page infront of you have been blurred by the desire sitting in your soul. It's very rare that you can gain control over Nathan Prescott.
"Come on!" He throws his head back in annoyance. "You've been at it for over two hours, just have a five minute break!" Nathan pleads as he rests his head agaisnt your shoulder. You try not to relish in how much control you have over this boy, knowing how needy he can get and how you're completely in control of his pleasure.
Trying to be discreet, Nathan's starts slowly inching his hands upwards and under your loose shirt.
"Jesus, you're fucking cold!" Your body shivers at the temperature change.
"I could think of a few ways on how you could change that." Nathan says back, before squeezing your tits over your bra.
"A few ways, or positions?" You quirk a brow, as you look over your shoulder at the blonde.
"Tomato, tomatoe." Nathan shrugs, before practically lunging forward to capture your lips with his own. His kiss is rough and desperate, enough to take your breath away.
You lean away from him, after his tongue swipes across your lips. "Five minutes." You remind him and he has to contain how giddy he is that you've finally given in.
"Five minutes." He assures you again, not wasting a second to reconnect your lips again.
Five minutes, turned into ten. Ten, turned into twenty. And before you know it, you're covered in blossoming purple marks, his shirt thrown over your head and both your bodies clinging onto one another as you drift into a deep slumber.
