the beginning (of a beautiful thing)

Natemare x Reader rating: SFW (another thing i did for @cerberus-shadows‘s contest! i had this as a WIP for a while so this contest gave me a reason to wrap it up! can anyone guess the cute movie scene this is inspired from? :3c) ===============

You were a ‘dark’ ego to a well known Youtuber but for the most part there wasn’t any animosity between the two of you and you and them got along like a house on fire. Much better than the more famous Youtubers and their dark egos anyways. But at the moment you were at some fancy ‘meet-n-greet’ thing party thing being held in some ritzy mansion. You’d met some of the other dark egos and they were so boring.

You floated next to your Youtuber while they spoke to a purple haired woman that casually held a carved knife in her hands while she talked. Faces blurred and you zoned out but you came back into focus just in time to see a guy you’d never seen before, and ego you assumed because of the purple tear tracks going down his cheeks, using some kind of black mist or smoke powers to tie someone’s shoelaces together. You wandered away from your Youtuber and closer to this interesting new guy.

He was hiding a smirk and you giggled at his antics. He jumped and glanced up to see you grinning at him, having clearly seen what he’d done. You stepped closer to him and he instinctively backed up, face flushed a little bit despite his best efforts to suppress it. But you weren’t deterred by his retreat, if anything it emboldened you. So the more he backed up the more you followed until you were chasing him at an even pace.

He was so cute when he was running away so you chased him back to who you assumed was his own Youtuber, since they looked identical save for a few things here and there. You floated to and fro trying to get a better look at this new ego but he kept ducking around his Youtuber to avoid you. Said Youtuber, named Nate you learned later, seemed very amused by the whole situation and spoke up and said genially,

“Mare, this is (Y/n), they’re the dark ego of my good friend here. Like you are for me.”

You grinned toothily at the nervous ego and said softly to your own Youtuber,

“Aww he’s a shy one isn’t he~?”

Your Youtuber smiled fondly, so used to your energetic and almost manic personality and replied that he’d probably be less shy around you if you’d say hello and maybe introduce yourself instead of just chasing him down like you’d been. You had the decency to look momentarily chided but soon your bubbly attitude was back and you zipped closer and waggled your fingers in a flirty wave and said hello.

“Hi Mare! I’m (Y/n!) S’nice to meet you!”

But Mare didn’t say anything in reply, instead looking off to the side to avoid making eye contact with either you or your Youtuber. You pursed your lips at how he ignored you both, especially you!, and waved your hand in front of his face to pull his attention to you regardless of whether he wanted to give it.

“Hey, I said hello!”

Nate lightly elbowed his ego and said lowly, but still loud enough for both you and your Youtuber to hear him,

“Dude, aren’t you gonna say hi?”

Natemare crossed his arms and scrunched his nose up, his purple tear tracks not hiding the light blush dusting his face as he refused to even look in the direction of the three people around him, preferring to instead stare out at the other groups of people and egos. But Nate just smirked and tugged on his ego’s black shirt and said with a mock scandalized tone,

“Mare, you’re not scared are you?”

The FNAF loving dark ego whipped around so fast you almost burst out laughing, his outraged look could peel paint but Nate just shrugged the look off. Mare grumbled out that he most definitely was NOT scared, especially not of you but when he accidentally caught your eye he quickly looked away. Not scared, suuure.

“Well get in there and say hi back.”

Before Mare could try to dig his heels in Nate tugged him in front of him so the two dark egos were barely two feet apart. With more or less nowhere else to go, unless he smoke traveled away, the ego decided to hell with it. So with a put upon sigh he slumped his shoulders and finally looked you in the eye, his blush deepening subconsciously as he saw your wide smile.

“*SIGH*.....Hey.”

He wasn’t prepared for your manic laughter and almost jumped out of his skin when she advanced on him. He panicked and circled around Nate, having no time to smack him like he wanted but he swore he’d get him back later for this. But at the moment he was too focused on avoiding your advancing, and still laughing, form. He ran off from the group, hoping some distance would dissuade you from bugging him! But nope, it just encouraged you to chase faster.

Just as he felt a hand grab his arm he freaked out and used his smoke travelling ability to try and hide in a nearby room. But apparently he could bring people with him if they were holding onto him because once he got into a nearby room he yelped when you fell on top of him, sending you both crumpled in a heap on the ground of this new room.

Mare groaned and shoved you off, but you bounced back fast and soon disappeared behind one of the dozen sheet covered objects in the room. Mare blinked as he looked around, you both appeared to be in some kind of storage room or something because everything was under sheets. Plus it was super dark.

The ego closed his eyes with a single light above him flickered on and when he opened them up again the objects covered in sheets were now arranged in a circle around him. He flinched when all the sheets were simultaneously ripped off, revealing the objects were all full body mirrors. And in each mirror was….you. Your smug grinning face surrounded him and he groaned and turned to leave when he felt fingers lightly yank on a lock of his hair from behind him.

He whirled around, angry flush back to his cheeks and yelled,

“Hey! Cut that shit out!!”

But the only thing behind him was the mirrors, with their images of you laughing. He heard your actual laugh to his left before he felt your hand tug on his ear from the same side. He growled and looked over, hissing when you weren’t there, he missed you again. He looked left and right, behind him then back towards the front but nothing.

Then a giggle came from his right, followed by a kiss to his right cheek. Mare jolted and loudly clapped his hand over his rapidly reddening cheek before angrily barking,

“What’s your deal?!”

You snickered to his left, but he was ready for you and faster than before he found you and locked his darkening eyes with your own shocked ones. A triumphant smile curled his lips and you felt yourself blush this time instead of him, wow he really was cute. But before you could comment on it he yelled with a wild laugh,

“HA! GOTCHA!”

You ‘eep’d’ and rushed out of the circle of mirrors, your squealing laughter echoing off the walls around you both. But Mare was hot on your floating heels, his form half smoke as he flew after you. Without thinking you sped back over to where your Youtuber and Nate were still talking. You flew circles around the duo with Mare right behind you, not giving up the chase. You went around and around then cut through the pair, always managing to stay just out of the male’s reach. You sharply turned left when Mare lunged for you, making him crash into some poor hapless bystander. While he was distracted you made a run for it, but your Youtuber grabbed the back of your shirt, briefly holding you in place which made your laughter crescendo before you tugged yourself free and bolted off, Mare right behind you again.

Nate shook his head but a fond smile played at his lips. He’d been trying to pull Natemare out of his shell since he’d manifested not too long ago. But the ego had some issues when he came into being, like anxiety and other negative feelings. He could be playful and cheeky with Nate but he had trouble with expressing that side around other. Well, you seemed to have cured him of that, temporarily at least.

The two youtubers watched you and Mare scamper off, your laughter loud and contagious. Said ego chased you out into the garden surrounding the back of the manor, and you both bobbed and weaved around shrubbery and trees, before he finally caught you and tackled you to the ground. But any animosity he’d had was gone, replaced with mirth as you both laughed breathlessly on the grass.

He glanced at you and flushed from how cute you looked when you were out of breath from laughing. Your cheeks were pink and your eyes were closed and he felt the smile that had taken over his expression. He hadn’t had this much fun in….ever. He looked away from you and up at the night sky, and couldn’t help but think this was the start of quite the friendship. And maybe more… <3

“What does that mean!?” He interrupted as his once alive bestie soon was nothing more than ash, cloths and rope. Panicking eve more as the mist began to hone in on him he tried to worm away but to no avail.

” You asked more over shocked by his ability to pull off such an action than having watched him literally just murder two people who had been harassing you for months due to some unseen reason. Watching as Mare turned his expression changed from one of malice and hate to warmth and love as his eyes shifted back to their normal color.
