Further TL;DR rant on Eli Vanto
"Caucasian features."
It's been bugging the absolute f*ck out of me.
Yes, I am back on my Eli Vanto bullshit.
Break it down.
White America is a Color
First, I think that only in America is the word Caucasian used to mean white people. The American understanding of Caucasian as meaning white, European-descended people was upheld by the Supreme Court in 1923. The case of United States v. Bhagat Singh Thind ruled that under the Naturalization Act of 1906 that only "free white persons" - also called Caucasians - and "aliens of African nativity and persons of African descent" to become naturalized citizens. Bhagat Singh Thind's argument rested on the descent of Europeans and Indians from a common Proto-Indo-European origin. The court disagreed.
Excerpt below, full text here.
What we now hold is that the words "free white persons" are words of common speech, to be interpreted in accordance with the understanding of the common man, synonymous with the word "Caucasian" only as that word is popularly understood. As so understood and used, whatever may be the speculations of the ethnologist, it does not include the body of people to whom the appellee belongs. It is a matter of familiar observation and knowledge that the physical group characteristics of the Hindus render them readily distinguishable from the various groups of persons in this country commonly recognized as white. The children of English, French, German, Italian, Scandinavian, and other European parentage quickly merge into the mass of our population and lose the distinctive hallmarks of their European origin. On the other hand, it cannot be doubted that the children born in this country of Hindu parents would retain indefinitely the clear evidence of their ancestry. It is very far from our thought to suggest the slightest question of racial superiority or inferiority. What we suggest is merely racial difference, and it is of such character and extent that the great body of our people instinctively recognize it and reject the thought of assimilation.
It is not without significance in this connection that Congress, by the Act of February 5, 1917, 39 Stat. 874, c. 29, § 3, has now excluded from admission into this country all natives of Asia within designated limits of latitude and longitude, including the whole of India. This not only constitutes conclusive evidence of the congressional attitude of opposition to Asiatic immigration generally, but is persuasive of a similar attitude toward Asiatic naturalization as well, since it is not likely that Congress would be willing to accept as citizens a class of persons whom it rejects as immigrants.
So, in America, the term Caucasian means 'white people' and not people of the Caucasus, or a group of people who have 'Caucasian features.' This is still accepted and common usage, despite the science of race being on a par with the sciences of alchemy, astrology, phrenology, a flat earth and the sun orbiting it.
Who with the What, Now?
A German philosopher named Christoph Meiners started the whole shitshow. He divided the races into the 'Caucasian' or 'beautiful' race and the 'Mongoloid' or 'ugly' race. Johann Friedrich Blumenbach carried it further in 1795, dividing humanity into five races by skin color.
First, this image is all over the search results, no findable attribution, but I'm using it because it's accurate in terms of skin colors:
Tumblr media
Other 'Caucasian features' included narrow noses with small nostrils and a sharp nasal sill, small mouths with thin lips, prominent supraorbital (above the eye socket) ridges, orthognathism and high cheekbones. Of course, in the late 1700s when all this was being quantified into 'racial features' not many Caucasoids fit into the categories. Not a lot of people do today. I'd love to have everyone in America take a 23-and-Me test, then make them sit down, shut the fuck up and think.
Star Wars and Mis-coloring
I am old enough to remember when Lando Calrissian was the only black man in the galaxy.
Eli Vanto.
Tan.
Really.
The definition of 'tan' is a yellowish brown color, or the processing of leather, but we're going with the classic "brown or darkened shade of skin developed after exposure to the sun." In short a tan is acquired and not an innate skin color. It doesn't help that one of the most referenced fandom resources repeatedly characterizes brown people as 'tan.'
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even Breha Organa is miscolored as 'golden tan.' These guys did not acquire a goddamn tan hanging out on Scarif. Luke Skywalker was mighty white even after living his whole life on a desert planet, and Obi Wan had not a trace of tan despite living there as long as Luke. These are brown people. Black characters such as Adi Gallia and Mace Windu are characterized as "dark."
For shit's sake. Is everyone at Wookiepedia afraid of the word 'brown?'
Light brown. Medium brown. Dark brown.
I realize that the GFFA doesn't have Earth's definitions of ethnicity, nationality, or race but miscoloring is miscoloring. Tacking on 'Caucasian features' is adding a racist trope to insult. Structural racism in the US is deeply ingrained and often the default setting when it comes to media. It is important to give people their representation when it is right fucking there.
Eli Vanto is brown. His canon appearance is in the comics, and while he might have been originally storyboarded as a white redhead, he did not stay that way. His voice actor in the audiobooks gave him a Texas twang, but maybe in other versions of the audiobook, he speaks with a different accent.
Turkish Eli? Sure.
Brazilian Eli? Absolutely.
Oaxacan Eli? Why not.
Desi Eli? Heck yes.
Mizrahi Eli? Bring it.
He's brown. Not white. Not tan with Caucasian features. He is as brown as Thrawn is blue.

NPR: The Whiteness Myth : Throughline
Tumblr media
In 1923, an Indian American man named Bhagat Singh Thind argued before the U.S. Supreme Court that he was a white man and was therefore eligible to become a naturalized citizen. He based his claim on the fact that he was a member of India's highest caste and identified as an Aryan and therefore white.
His claims were supported by the so-called Indo-European language theory, a controversial idea that says nearly half the world's population speak a language that originated in one place. Theories about who lived in that place inspired a racist ideology that contended that the original speakers of the language were a white supreme race that colonized Europe and Asia thousands of years ago.
This was used by many to define whiteness and eventually led to one of the most horrific events in history. On this episode of Throughline, we unpack the myths around this powerful idea and explore the politics and promise of the mother tongue.

★ EXCLUSIVE: ‘Salman Khan deserves good scripts; Have discussed 2 – 3 ideas with him,’ reveals Rajkumar Santoshi!
Jan 20, 2023
Rajkumar Santoshi and Salman Khan have a special bond. While the duo have worked together in the 1994 cult comedy, Andaaz Apna Apna, Salman has done a guest appearance for his ‘Raj Ji’ in two films – the Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif starrer Ajab Prem Ki Gazab Kahani and the Shahid Kapoor and Ileana D’Cruz fronted Phata Poster Nikhla Hero. In 2016, Rajkumar Santoshi was in talks with Salman for 2 films, an original rooted entertainer tentatively titled Daanveer and also the official adaptation of An Ode To My Father, which eventually was made by Ali Abbas Zafar as Bharat. In an exclusive candid chat with Pinkvilla, Rajkumar Santoshi opened up about his bond with Salman Khan Salman Khan will stand by the side of every person in need
“Salman Khan is a very good human being and people have a misplaced understanding of who he is. For me, he is a great friend, who never says no for anything. If some person in need reaches out to Salman, he will stand by their side. ‘Bhagwan Ke Ghar Der Hai, Par Andher Nahi. Salman Ka Bhi Aisa Hi Hai’, once you meet Salman, he will win you over,” says Rajkumar Santoshi, adding further that over and above being a good human being, Salman is a great actor too. “Personally, I feel, Salman is not getting good scripts off late. Bajrangi Bhaijaan was one of the good script he got and did a wonderful job there. He deserves good scripts.
”The director goes ahead to add that Salman can blend himself into any genre. “He can do Andaaz Apna Apna and even Lahore: 1947. But he often get’s stuck in his image. I don’t want Salman to be Salman, I want him to be the character. Like in Andaaz Apna Apna, we find Prem in it and not Salman. That’s my attempt. Even when I made film with Sunny Deol, he was the character and not himself,” Rajkumar Santoshi explains. The filmmaker, known for classics like Ghayal, Khakhee, Ghatak, Damini, Legend of Bhagat Singh and Andaaz Apna Apna to name some, however admits that being a superstar comes with own set of challenges.
Salman Khan should not be Salman Khan in all films
“He is a superstar, but he should not be Salman Khan in all films. Look at Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Sultan and Tere Naam. He often scores big when he plays a character. Yes, maintaining an image is important but he has the Tiger Franchise for that. Now, I wish he does some subjects which challenge the actor in him,” he admits. Being close to Salman, is Rajkumar Santoshi planning to make a feature film with him anytime soon? He answers, “I have discussed 2-3 ideas with Salman and will take them forward at the right time. My family is a Salman Khan loyalist and every day, they remind me to meet Salman and make a film with him. Salman often meets me with so much love. I am ready to make a film with him and just waiting to get a go ahead. I look forward to make a very good film with Saman Khan.
”Salman aside, Rajkumar Santoshi is also in talks for a film with Aamir Khan. “Aamir is a very good friend of mine and I really respect him as an actor and a person. He sticks to the roots and really likes me. There’s a story, there’s a subject which I have developed for Aamir. I was going to meet him around the time of Laal Singh Chaddha release, but he has announced a break right now. I will narrate him the story when we meet and try to end his break. I will try and get him back on the film set soon,” he says.

INDIES TOP 100 BOLLYWOOD HISTORICALS !
INDIES TOP 100 BOLLYWOOD HISTORICALS !
"History is blessing as an inspiration, & disaster as an excuse". Since we at Indies devote part of our time here online, to being film historians & not real life historians, & since there has anyway been a scarcity of historical film material produced thru time, to entertainingly hook our audiences in to our enthralling past/culture, not just in the new millennia but even in the golden b&w age of cinema, we would like to take the cinematic liberty of defining history, not per the strict parameters imposed on real history /antiquity researchers, but a milder set of rules, namely: 1. The films should be largely based on broadly accepted & popular real set of events or incidents & people, from society - if not with exact places & dates or names altogether. 2. The stories passing on thru time, mostly via linked textual references, must have a broad acceptance in culture as inspiring reality, even w/o empirical tangible evidences to establish their authenticity, & despite contrary, or dismissive, lesser popular claims in circulation. 3. The amount of magic, not just metaphoric but real magical qualities, attributed to humans narrated via these stories, must be restricted to a bare minimum & atleast not form a crux of the film (as such stories already find a hallowed place in Indies Mythological Films section). PS. Few of the below listed films, were released in dual languages, incl Hindi, back in the day, even if only non-Hindi versions available for viewership today. PS. There are a very small few old b&w (assumed not confirmed) historical films from 1930s & 1940s era coming across as impressive at just poster or casting look, but with no prints available for public view, nor any journalistic literature of the time to gain more insight, very hard to include them at Indies so. PS. Jfyi. The 2 most prominent Bollywood Historical masters to emerge post this exclusive Indie historical collation, lending this all-time research much density, are- Paidi Jairaj followed by Bharat Bhushan! Each with a handful historical films placed atop or very high up the all-time list !
