Some sad news to share - Shoujo mangaka Hisaya Nakajo, best known for her long-running series Hana-Kimi (For You In Full Blossom) has passed away at the age of 50 due to a heart condition. Hana-Kimi ran from 1996 to 2004 in Japanese shoujo magazine Hana to Yume, and was officially released in English in the US by Viz Media. The series revolved around a girl named Mizuki, who becomes so infatuated with high-jump competitor Izumi that she disguises herself as a boy to attend his all-boy high school to meet him. The series was popular enough to get multiple live-action dramas, including in Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan. While Hana-Kimi was her only big hit, it was popular not just in Japan, but overseas as well. RIP to a beloved shoujo manga creator.

Shoujo I Read in 2023
Hello! I just wanted to share the shoujo titles I read this year, as it was a goal of mine to read more and cross some titles off my PTR. In fact, most of the manga I ended up reading this year was shoujo, so I'd say I achieved my goal and then some.
Tumblr media
Titles:
Angel Sanctuary (Kaori Yuki)
Snow White with the Red Hair (Sorata Akizuki)
Cat Street (Yoko Kamio) *
Hana-Kimi (Hisaya Nakajo)
Basara (Yumi Tamura)
Kugutsu (Akira Takahashi) * - second part doesn't seem to be translated unfortunately
Eight Clouds Rising (Natsumi Itsuki) *
Seiho Boys High School (Kaneyoshi Izumi)
CLOVER (CLAMP)
Also read some others not in the photo
Magic Knight Rayearth + MKR 2 (CLAMP)
Gohou Drug + Drug & Drop (CLAMP)
Fruits Basket (Natsuki Takaya) - saw the anime reboot but hadn't read it
Chihayafuru (Yuki Suetsugu) - read from where the anime ends previously but I read from Ch. 1 this year
7 Seeds (Yumi Tamura) * - read the first 7 volumes and plan to continue next year
*only available to read via fan translation (shoutout to the teams for making these series available!)
I ended up reading a lot of cool series this year that I've had my eye on for a while. As you can see, I read many titles by CLAMP this year, and I have another post on one of their series coming up too. Also, really sorry to hear about the passing of the author of Hana-Kimi, that series was a nice bright spot for me earlier this year so this really saddened me.
I may make another post about shoujo/josei series I plan on reading in 2024 to come back at the end of next year and see if I read them. But I also wanted to thank the people who read and supported my posts since I made this account in the spring. I kinda did it on a whim but I've had fun making posts and it's actually been nice to have my thoughts put together somewhere I can come back to and look over. Hope everyone has a nice end of the year!

One of the first mangas I read that just became The Manga for me was Hanazakari no Kimitachi e by Nakajo Hisaya (Published as Hana Kimi in english). It's a 90s shojou manga with all that entails, long long legs, blooming flowers behind every character, an over the top plot. I loved it. I must have checked out all 22 volumes from the library a dozen times at least.
It follows Ashiya Mizuki, a girl who enrolls in an all boys school in order to get closer to her hero, high jumper Sano Izumi. She disguises herself as a boy and moves from America to Japan because his high jumping is the most beautiful thing she's ever seen. It was funny, it was focused on interpersonal relationships and how the characters grew as people and accepted themselves and I loved the art. I couldnt get enough of it. One of many things I was obsessed with as a youth that hit different now that I know I'm transmasc. Like, hmmm I wonder why I obsessively read and reread a story where a girl disguises herself as a boy and lives as a man for several years (distant sound of eggshells cracking)
Hana Kimi meant a lot to me and I'm gaining a deeper appreciation of why as I reread it. If you like 90s shojous it comes heartily reccomended.
Hana Kimi was one of the first things I read with gay characters who weren't a punchline. One of the main characters has a crisis of sexuality and ends it by deciding it was fine if he liked boys and girls! It felt fucking revolutionary for me as a queer kid in the 2000s. Mizuki didn't act like being a boy was impossible or a burden, or that being a girl was awful and being a boy was her only escape, she enjoyed being both genders! It meant so much to me to have a story where gender and sexuality were somewhat, if not fully, fluid.

your art is gorgeous! were you inspired by any specific artists or styles when building up your own? it’s unique but has something familiar to it i can’t quite name
HI NONNIE THANK YOUUU 😭 you are giving me an opportunity to talk about my art influences i Hope you are Ready for text:
my inspirations for my art style are soooo varied i feel, but i would say the two biggest sources of influence are classical paintings and shoujo manga...
i think the shape of faces and features in 'classical' paintings (a lot of pieces from the renaissance and baroque eras) really is so beautiful to me. i just! i really love round faces and pronounced noses and soft jaws. and chins. lol i think they are so beautiful. and theres a beauty to peoples bodies, their skin folds and curls and fat and softness that is just so auggh guaug hughua ughh <taking poison damage
and i am a longtime lover of shoujo manga! there is so much beauty, detail and femininity that have been woven into my art from shoujo influences. my first love was without a doubt sailor moon [pov: you are a lifelong moonie], but i also looved yoshitaka amano, arina tanemura, katsura hoshino, hisaya nakajo, and CLAMP :flower:
overall i also think my art really leans into mythology, religious imagery, fantasy and medieval themes! or i'd like to think? i hope!? they're definitely the places my mind goes when daydreaming about art :^)
