AMAZON PRIME'S ZORRO PROS & CONS.

After days of watching and re-watching the episodes of the new Zorro adaptation, I decided to share what - obviously only in my opinion - are its main pros & cons.

(For fairness, since I will mention spoiler elements, I thought I'd insert my reflections below the cut).

PROS:

MORE POV. It is impossible to start mentioning the pros of this series without mentioning the very obvious - and extremely right - decision to "broaden" the points of view. Perhaps for the first time, in fact, the story is not narrated almost completely by Diego alone, but also by the various other characters who are part of it (be they the Chinese, the natives, etc.).

REALITY. As already said by @aragarna, this new Zorro gets rid of the "we are all friends/we sit at the same table" contours to show - finally! - the tense and highly classist climate of a sadly very particular historical period. We see the hatred and distrust towards the natives, with the enormous difference - compared to other products that focus on this particular "feud" between colonizers and colonized - of knowing "both bells" (I don't know if there is a similar expression, in English, I apologize) and therefore being able to realize how different things are, depending on who tells the stories. This makes the series refreshingly "real" (yes, even if it includes elements like the Spirits of Native American culture).

NOT CLEARLY GOOD/BAD CHARACTERS. Monasterio is no longer the Commander, absolutely "black", devoid of scruples and good sides. Indeed, as the season continues, he increasingly demonstrates that he is an individual who well understands the absolute injustice of what he does - while nevertheless not shying away from doing it because he is faithful to his position. He is in conflict between what his principles and his role impose on him, effectively making him a magnificent "grey" character. Diego and Nah-Lin themselves are wonderful examples of "well-rounded" characters, because even in their most wrong actions, they maintain a sincerely credible and even - at certain points - justifiable motivation.

TECHNICAL VISUAL ASPECT. The scenes are masterfully shot, the soundtrack is not intrusive but rather an excellent way to underline the various thoughts/feelings of the characters, etc..

ZORRO'S LEGACY. The idea of a "generational change" of Zorro, in a choice that potentially makes it possible to see more sides of the same character - trivially because more people interpret him. A fact demonstrated in this same first season, where we had three Zorros, all three with their "characteristic side".

THE DECISION OF DEPRIVE DIEGO OF HIS MOST RECOGNIZABLE TRAIT. Depriving him - and so soon! - of his father (and consequently of the only person who knows him perfectly), the series allows Diego to always act as himself (within the limits desired by the situation of the moment), without having to resort to that supposed inability to defend himself/laziness/cowardice which is renowned as one of the particular signs of his character.

DIEGO IS NOT INVINCIBLE. It might seem stupid, but in many adaptations, Diego is seen as practically infallible. His plans always come to fruition, he never gets hurt, he makes almost no mistakes... This "new" Diego doesn't; here Diego is young (according to my calculations he is just 21/22 years old), he becomes Zorro not because of his choice but because - literally! - the spirits give him (via Night Crow) the costume and send him home with a lapidary: "You are the new Zorro, whether you want it or not", he still acts like a daredevil boy (complete with Bernardo-Mother Hen)... And this translates into some - very justifiable - errors and just as many choices that are not exactly well thought out.

CONS:

TOO MANY IRONS IN THE FIRE. To be clear: the various plot threads are all (well, almost: Samael and Guadalupe and their "inheritance hunt" have not managed to involve me at all, for the moment) interesting and well structured; but they are objectively many, for a single season. We have the Bear Clan, the Russian-American Company that wishes to "take over Los Angeles", Guadalupe's aforementioned inheritance hunt, Nah Lin's desire for revenge, the search for the truth about his father's murder on Diego's part... And of these very few - if not almost none - had an effective conclusion. The feeling I got was that the producers wanted to "play their cards" all at once, in the hope that this would secure them a renewal for a second season. Something along the lines of: "Hey, we need the renewal! Look at all the unresolved things we left!".

LOLITA. I'm sorry to say this, but I just can't understand what the producers had in mind when they created her character. Or rather, to be more precise, when they created her relationship with Diego. She is initially shown to us as angry at Diego for going to Spain (I think?), in an attitude that could even be understood - if only that same attitude didn't remain as if petrified throughout the rest of the season. Why, exactly, does Lolita remain so resentful towards Diego all the time? Because, despite knowing that he loves her (he himself tells her this, when she helps him with his wound, and even in the very first episode), she constantly pretends not to know what feelings bind him to her, and indeed continually acts in such a way as to hurt him on purpose? Mha! It remains meaningless to me.

Here it is. I have indicated, I repeat, what for me are the main pros and cons of the season (you will probably have found others, or even none).

pleeeeease just let me rant

so obviously a lot of the hype for hamilton the musical has calmed down. it’s been almost ten years. the original cast has long since moved on, and you won’t find as many posts about it on tumblr, and a LOT less active fan fiction. i understand that it’s been a while. but-

hamilton the musical is a piece of artwork. it took Lin-Manuel Miranda seven years to write. its emotions are relatable, and powerful. ive yet to meet someone who hasn’t cried on watching it’s quiet uptown for the first time. the level of intense talent you need to even begin to attempt to write something like that is just beyond incredible.

“Just get over Hamilton it’s dead”

so the fandom’s less active. so what? it will continue to be beautiful. continue to be hilarious. continue to punch you in the gut. let hamilton the musical live. don’t be ashamed to stay in a fandom that’s been around for a while.

the original cast, and any cast after, has so much talent. Renée Elise Goldsberry rapping and singing in Satisfied has my heart. her delivery of It’s Quiet Uptown makes anyone sob. Daveed Diggs in Guns and Ships? anyone? fastest song on broadway EVER? and don’t even get me STARTED on Pippa Soo, Jasmine Cephas Jones, Okieriete Onoadowan, Leslie Odom Jr, Chris Jackson, Anthony Ramos. And as for Lin-Manuel Miranda, what can i say?

listen to hamilton. love hamilton. sing and rap hamilton. be a nerd about hamilton. let people judge you. it’s their loss. anyone who wants to go a life without understanding these emotions, this power, that Lin-Manuel Miranda squeezed into 2 and a half hours, well, that’s their problem.

Has Captain Neutrino run into any other versions of themselves? what was it like? How do you feel about it all??

In "canon" I don't think they have, no. Which they find kind of strange, like, what happened to each universes' version of themself?? It felt... wrong to them, that they could appear in any universe as if dropped into someone's body. Were they possessing the consciousness of their alternate selves? Erasing their alternates from existence??

The closest they've come to actually running into themselves is during that scene with the glowing eyes in their cryo chamber. But they didn't have the warp crystal yet, and they didn't see or hear the signs of wormhole travel so its not like it was a sudden paradoxical event. They don't know what they saw or if that was actually them; It was like experiencing a memory through the eyes of someone else.

.....BUT IN FANON my captain has in fact met @sketchy-scribs-n-doods and @deyodrawn 's captainsonas. All three of our captains share a Mark (MY idea was that he has the accumulative memories of our original Marks all in one, but i dont remember if we went with that or if he ended up being a stray Mark we adopted who's OG captain was dead 🤔)

Bi-Han

• Wonders what in the hell you’re doing.

• Finds himself wanting to see if you’d put more of his uniform on. Depending on if you put it right or wrong, he’d show you the proper way.

• Not that it mattered because he was sure he’d take it all off after anyway.

• Stares in silence as he takes in your appearance, arms crossed over his chest and an unreadable expression on his face. It’s even more difficult to tell what he’s thinking bc he’s wearing his mask. He had walked in on you cleaning your bedroom. You had found some of his spare things, wearing his arm bands and gloves just to see how they’d fit. He studies you and the way you admired the fine details.

• Feels something stirring in his chest as you twisted and turned your arms, the gloves having to be readjusted since they kept sliding down a bit.

• Eventually walks up to you, his sudden looming presence over you causing you to jump in surprise. You barely have time to say anything before he gently but firmly grabs your jaw in his large hand.

“What is this? What are you doing?” His voice is gruff, so deep that you feel is vibrate throughout your sternum. You can’t help but stare in his dark eyes, getting lost in their depths as you try to think of a response.

“I was just… trying them on.” You finally reply, your voice low and meek.

He takes a deep breath, letting his eyes trail down your arms and then back to your face that was still being held by his hand.

“They suit you.” He runs his thumb over your lips, bringing it down to pull on your bottom one and drag over your chin. You can see something swirling in his eyes, something making a heat bloom in your stomach. He adjusts his grip on your jaw, grabbing you a bit tighter.

“Remove your clothes… but leave these on.”

Kuai Liang

• Keeps a neutral expression, but inside he’s entertained.

• Stands back and observes how you fidget with his mask to make sure it’s secured right.

• When he sees you pick up his kunai that’s when he gets a bit more alert but trusts that you have enough sense to not hurt yourself.

• Has an amused smirk on his face as he watches you click his mask into place and begin to gently twirl his kunai in a circle, arching your body away to not get nicked.

• He’s ready to step in if he sees you start to get out of hand but otherwise he’s enjoying you pretending to be him. He wonders briefly how you would look in his entire uniform and the thought has his smile grow just a bit more.

• Thinks about how his signature color of yellow would look a little too good against your skin and clears his throat before walking up to you.

“Shall we get you a mask of your own?” He mirths, a twinkle in his eyes. He grabs the kunai from you, adjusting it in your hands to have you hold it properly.

“Nah I quite like stealing and wearing yours.” Your voice is a bit muffled from his mask, eyes crinkling in the corners as you don’t even try and hide your smile.

His eyebrows raise, a quiet ‘oh’ on his lips before grinning. He tilts your head up with a knuckle under your chin, leaning down to whisper something in your ear.

“Maybe I will use it to silence you tonight.”

Tomas

• Contrary to popular belief I think he would be a bit more serious when it comes to you putting his uniform on. His uniform is a symbol of his honor and dedication to the Lin Kuei so he wears it with pride and doesn’t necessarily want you to wear it ‘just for fun’. Especially since he feels he has more to prove to his brothers.

• Taps his fingers against his crossed arms as he watches you adjust the top on yourself, running his tongue over his teeth when he sees you putting it on wrong. Goes up to you to help you put it on right, tugging it down and securing the straps. He’s not exactly gentle as he fixes it.

• You can see that he’s tense but all it takes is one soft look and he’s letting his shoulders relax and letting out a breath.

• You smile up at him and he takes a moment to look at you, taking in your features before dropping his gaze back to his uniform top.

• He’s more tender as he adjusts it, his fingers brushing against your skin. And when he goes behind you to check everything, he leans in close to your ear.

• His hands come around the front to pat you down, making your cheeks heat up a bit.

“You look good moje láska. Almost like a true Lin Kuei.” His voice is low and hot in your ear, a shiver running up your spine. He backs up and you turn around, taking in how he stands with his arms crossed, chin pointed up and out, light grey eyes shining brilliantly.

“I should put on the rest of the uniform then, huh?” You laugh, swallowing to sooth your suddenly parched throat. His aura changed, filling the air with a thick tension. He shakes his head, putting a hand up.

“Don’t bother, I’m going to take it all off anyway.”

He turns his hand palm up, silently demanding for yours and of course you comply. He tugs you to him, placing his hand on the small of your back as he takes his gaze up and down your body.

“I will teach you the true strength of a Lin Kuei.”

Liu Kang

• More laid back when it comes to this.

• Loves that you allow him to have these simple little moments with you, being a god doesn’t always give him the grace of having memories like these.

• He’s got a full grin on his face as he walks in on you wearing his headband and slipping your arms through the sleeves of his top.

• He can’t help but quietly chuckle as he watches you struggle to try and button it up, a thoughtful hand on his chin in amusement.

• He stays silent as he continues to observe you, biting back his laughter as you manage to get one button but then it immediately pops open.

• This time he makes his presence known, walking up to you to kiss your cheek and help with the buttons.

“You know this is meant to stay open, yes?”

You laugh and nod, feeling a small heat on your cheeks now aware that he was watching you fumble with his shirt this entire time.

“Seems like a design flaw if there are buttons for something that wasn’t meant to be buttoned.

His fingers start to do them but you place a hand on top of his to stop his movements.

“Leave it open. I should wear it properly right?”

His smirk takes over his lips, his hands dropping back to their sides and he steps back a bit. He watches you turn around, a teasing glance over your shoulder as you slowly drop his shirt off your shoulders. His glowing eyes taking in every inch of exposed skin.

Once his top is hanging in the crooks of your elbows, wastes no time in pressing himself against your back and putting his lips on your cheek.

“Perhaps I should show you how to properly take it off next.”

Raiden

• Thinks you look cute no matter what but in anything of his?

• Feels his love grow for you tenfold

• He walks into your room after a long hard day on the farm, shirtless and sweaty and fanning himself with a menu had had taken from Madam Bo’s. He couldn’t find his hat in the early morning so unfortunately he had to work without it in the blistering sun.

• He was ready to ask if you had seen it but stops when he sees it sitting right on your head, twisting and turning your neck to check yourself out in the mirror. He’s confused at first, wondering why you hadn’t given it to him in the first place.

• Until you say that you wanted to surprise him and fix it up.

• Blinks at you in shock because he didn’t think it needed fixing/that you noticed it wearing down.

“You… fixed it for me? Really?”

You nod and he can feel the tips of his start to redden, your kind gesture warming his heart and making him a bit flustered.

“I noticed it coming apart in some places and wanted to patch it up for you.”

His eyes soften and he looks at his hat on top of your head, admiring the fine work you did on it. You go to take it off but he stops you, removing your hands from the brim.

“It looks good on you darling, leave it on.” His voice is soft and steady but he can feel the blood on his ears rushing to color the rest of his face.

You smile at him and kiss his cheek, breathing in the scent of him working outside all day. It makes heat stir in your belly, having you nose your way up his throat and to his ear.

“Maybe it can be the only thing I leave on later tonight.”

Your suggestion has him flustered, stuttering out a response as he tries to form a coherent thought.
