People must be aware that every time a character states something in a show, what will happen is the opposite of that.
Some examples:
Will on S3EP1 when he said "I'm not... gonna fall in love" and we learned that he fell in love with Mike on S4.
El in the letter Mike read in the beginning of S4EP1 "We're gonna have the best spring break ever" and what happened? They had the worst spring break ever for very obvious reasons I don't even have to state. The reasons are endless...
El when she said to Mike on S4EP2 "You'll meet my friends later, but today, I want today to be about me and you" and what happened? Mike actually met "her friends" who are actually her bullies later that day and the day got ruined because of them.
Eddie when he said to Dustin on S4EP8 "Never change Dustin Henderson" and what happened in EP9? Eddie died and I'm 100% sure Dustin will be very different next season because of that.
When Will on S4EP8 said to Mike on the van "She'll need you Mike, and she always will" regarding El and I'm sure she won't, haha. At least not romantically for so many reasons and we'll see that next season.
Things that are stated and said in such a direct way in a show will bring the opposite sooner or later.

The genius of Byler in s1 (the significance of Mike and Will spending all season separated)
Y'all, I started a ST rewatch from season 1, and I just wanted to make a post about how genius the setup of Byler and Mike and El's relationship is from the very beginning of the show. Actually, I believe that Byler has only been able to progress as a slowburn love story and eventual plot twist because of how strategically it was initially set up.
Mike and Will are introduced as having a "different" sort of relationship with each other, as opposed to the standard friendships they share with Dustin and Lucas. Right off the bat, we see that Will values being honest and vulnerable with Mike more than he values things that would otherwise benefit him. Around Lucas and Dustin, he acts as though he is fine with winning the DND game as long as Mike doesn't see the roll, but as soon as they leave, he admits to Mike that he lost and that the demagorgon got him.
We can also see that Mike has a different sort of relationship with Will than he has with the other boys. What is important to note, though, is that in s1 we only see the special care and affection Mike has towards Will in the context of Will not being physically present, as he has been taken by the demagorgon. Mike acts a good deal more concerned about Will and more eager to find Will than Lucas and Dustin do. He is the character of focus or the "protagonist" in s1, so we see him talking about Will to his family, and we see how upset he gets when he sees Will's "corpse" at the lake. El, Lucas, and Dustin all stay at the quarry, and Mike has an emotional meltdown and bikes home crying and hugs his mom. In this way, the show is suggesting from s1 that Will is special to Mike in a way that is different from how Mike views/treats Lucas and Dustin. But the thing is, we assume that Mike's perspective is only highlighted BECAUSE he's the protagonist/character of focus and not because his relationship with Will is unique and something we should be paying attention to.
I fully believe that if Mike and Will had been together in s1 the way they are in s2 and if we'd seen the way Mike acts around Will in s2 from the very beginning, then Byler would have been a lot more obvious, and I think we would've been able to recognize from the very beginning that Mike and Will are gay and that their relationship is building up to a romance. But because we only see Mike's care and affection for Will in light of Will's absence in s1, we can't connect those dots and recognize the love they have for each other. Also, we are introduced to El right after Will gets taken, and Mike spends all season with El, developing a relationship with her: a relationship that for all intents and purposes holds the appearance of a romance, even leading to a kiss. It's no wonder why the audience ships M*leven in the beginning instead of Byler, because all we have to go off of is Mike and El's close relationship and the high amount of screentime they spend together vs Mike and Will's one shared scene. We don't see Mike's sweetness and protectiveness over Will until season 2, but by that time, we have already had the expectation set for us that Mike and El are in love, so we never stop to consider that maybe the show is actually building up Byler. S2 is a direct reversal of Mike's relationships with El and Will in s1, with him looking for and missing El the way did with Will in s1, and sharing a lot of screentime/sweet moments with Will the way he did with El in s1. But because s1 already set the precedent that M*leven is romantic and Byler is platonic, we have no reason to assume that the roles are actually opposite from what we were initially shown.
The only reason Byler works the way it does is because 1. we are tricked into thinking that we are only shown how much Mike cares about Will because he is the protagonist and not because his relationship with Will is special, and 2. s1 builds up Mike and El's relationship while never properly showing us Mike and Will's relationship, only introducing the true prospect of Byler once we have already grown attached to Mike and El's relationship and the idea of Mike and El being in love. In s3, Mike and El date and make out all the while Mike and Will's relationship is rocky, so we have reason to believe that Mike is in love with/cares about El primarily and struggles in his friendship with Will because he is too focused on El. Even leading into s4, we assume that Mike and Will's friendship is still rocky bc Mike has been neglecting Will in favor of El and not because he's coming to terms with his feelings for Will and dealing with internalized homophobia. Yet, once Byler becomes canon and people go back and watch the show in light of it being canon, they will see that Will has always been special to Mike and that their relationship has always been highlighted as being noteworthy and different. We simply weren't able to recognize it from s1 because we never saw Mike and Will together: only how much Mike cared about Will while he was gone. And by the time their relationship turned blatantly romantic and special in s2, we still couldn't recognize it because of the expectation of M*leven. The writing for Byler is just so genius and well thought out even from the start.

just imagine, end of season 5, its the end of episode 8 and the party have defeated vecna, byler confessed, theyre happy.
we see the party heading off to college, new beginnings and all that. mikes helping will pack up his stuff into a pickup truck, he says something like "well, looks like we're all done, everything's strapped up!", will walks over to him from where he was saying his goodbyes to joyce, jonathan, hopper and el (shes going to a local college with max in this idk) and just with every bit of softness in the world says "thanks for helping me pack, mike, are you sure you don't mind bringing all this to chicago for me?" and mike's eyebrows just shoot up because he literally went to hell for this man, and in the most sassy tone you can imagine "uh, yeah, we're gonna need some type of furniture for our new place and the government hush fund didn't stretch that far" will lets out a little chuckle, "damn, its the least they could do after the last 7 years" "i know right", mike squawked out, "anyways we better start heading if we want to make it there before dinner, see you soon mrs. byers!" muffled tears of happiness can be heard from her, and her voice wobbles slightly when she shouts back "call me when you get there and send pictures of the apartment! i love you boys", even a sniffle can be heard from hopper when he shouts out some reminders for driving the long distance. as the boys get into the truck, will shouts "we'll be back for thanksgiving, you'll hardly know we're gone" and as mike pulls away from the newly renovated byers-hopper house, there's this perfect shot of a normal loving family wishing their son(s) off to college and in this moment everything is forgotten, no more upside down or vecna or demodogs, no more possessions or otherworldly connections, just two boys holding hands over the console of the car as they set off to a new city, knowing that no matter what happens they'll always have eachother.
me and michael, solid as they come
me and michael, its not a question now

The Upside Down is a tesseract.
(time theory)
The writers tweeted a picture of the book Wrinkle in Time, which its title refers to a tesseract. You may ask, what's a tesseract? The basis is that a tesseract is a fifth dimension (the fourth dimension is time). Even in the book, to explain it, they use the same metaphor that they used in Stranger Things about the flea.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here they're only using this concept to travel through dimensions. In ST, creating gates with so much power that tore space and time. And in the book, in a very similar way, to make a shortcut go to point A to point B.
We know that El has the power to create these gates, so Vecna is interested in her. And she also was the one who sent Henry to another dimension for the first time. But if you pay attention, this dimension didn't look like the Upside Down, so it makes me believe that these aren't the same place.
One is blue with spores and looks like Hawkins on November sixth, 1983, the day Willl disappeared (remember that the Duffers said this was important, and they will explain it in s5). And the other has warm colors and looks like a desert with many rocks.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My theory is that Will created the Upside Down while trying to hide from the Demogorgon. As in Wrinkle in Time, not everyone has the power of tesser. And Will manipulated time and space to create this fifth dimension.
We have seen how the Upside Down can affect the real world via the lights. They use light particles to communicate with others. A similar way that Interstellar uses the strings in the fifth dimension (also a tesseract). But in Stranger Things, they have only used it to communicate in the same period of time (the present), but what if there's a way to also communicate to other periods of time (the past)?
In Interstellar, the tesseract is an enormous structure used to communicate through gravity. Still, it's Copper's love for his daughter that allows him to see her in the past and communicate with her in this exact period. Because the premise of the movie is love transcends time and space.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
ST also uses the trope of the power of love. So where I'm going with this? Our heroes will find a way to communicate with their past selves to try to prevent things, but I don't think they will be able to change the past even if they try.
My reason to believe that they will also play with time is that our villain literally has a clock motif and is obsessed with time. Also, there have been some references about time travel. And going back to season 1, the night Will disappeared, the lights in Mike's house were flickering. And the light in Will's bike also started to flicker, so he was able to notice the Demogorgon. Maybe it also was a warning. Still, if we continue with this theory, Vecna was living in the other dimension, not in the Upside Down, so he wasn't the one manipulating the lights because Will hadn't created it "yet." So who was behind the flickering? Our heroes in the future.
This isn't a new theory; I know this is the basis of flickergate. It's cute the idea that they were kissing in the Upside Down, but I think they were trying to prevent Will from leaving. Like in Interstellar, Cooper uses Morse code to send the message "STAY" But in both cases, they couldn't stop it.
Remember the iconic scene with Joyce and the Christmas lights, when she painted an alphabet, and someone warned her to RUN. Some people had questioned how Will was able to see the letters when the Upside Down was stuck on the day he disappeared. So, what if it wasn't the Will who was stuck in the UD and was someone from the future that was trying to save her (maybe Will but his future self).
There may be more examples of lights flickering, but these are the two that I remember right now.
Also, we know that Will could call his house via the phone. And in season 2, when they discovered that the way to defeat the Mindflayer was by closing the gate, the phone started to ring, so Will knew he was in the Byers' house. Maybe Vecna also will figure out how to use the Upside Down and try to intercept their plan, calling the house at that time.
Bonus: Arrival was in the s4 movie list inspiration. A movie that also plays with the concept that time is non-linear. The key to communicating with the aliens is understanding how they perceive time. You can read more about it in this analysis of the movie.
In conclusion: The Upside Down is a fifth dimension (a tesseract) where you can communicate with others dimensions, not only in the present.

i love the debate of whether Mike should have long or short hair in s5! but i'll be a die hard defender of the long hair because
1.) it looks good okay, it suits him and the possibility of ponytails or Will brushing a hairstrand behind his ear are killing me in concept alone. but that's just personal preference, for me it's mainly 2.) it'd follow the Wheeler theme So Well, guysssss
bc i do like the concept of him cutting it in response to Eddies death. but listen, listen: the Wheeler's consistent themes with hair styling on the show okay.
Nancy's hair journey is a complete reflection of her personal growth as attested by the costume department. as she grows to be more independent and rejects the suburban cul-de-sac life her hair gets progressively shorter in every season while Also getting curlier. reject tradition and all, the haircut she had in s1 is Nothing like the one she has now
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and Mike on the other hand goes in the opposite direction on the show. he starts s1 with your typical 80s-boy almost bowlcut but not 100% committed hairstyle and clothes his mom bought him. that's how his mom dressed and styled him - even commented on in universe with his little outfits from the GAP. and it's just like how Nancy also dressed to fit in the family. and then Mike's hair gets floofier and messier over the seasons, by s3 he still has the same haircut but it's overgrown and doesn't fall neatly or flat anymore. and then by season 4 where he finally starts to commit and rejects expectations for the first time and joins hellfire he has Long hair and it's length also makes it the waviest and curliest it's ever been
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
guys their hair journeys literally parallel each other in terms of character growth as of now. they both have less and less of the hairstyle they had in s1 as they reject their family's and the town's values. short neat haircut for boy and long wavy locks for girl were their starting points. classic nuclear family, gender roles, Reagan years. and now they're donning the shoulder length wavy hair for Mike and the short and crazy curly hair for Nancy. the Wheeler fashion seem to have a direct correlation between non-conformity and their hair defying the ideal conservative expectations of the time. and i love all possibilities i've seen suggested for Mike's hair, but following this pattern Mike should either have a similar hair length to s4 or longer/curlier to show him fully rejecting the expectations placed on him
because this hair showing development phenomena is Such a big thing even Karen fits that family styling 😭
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
from wavy brunette, to suddenly bleach blonde and then BAM curls out of nowhere. and all over her independence/cheating/plot relevancy story line
growing your hair to a style that's not alligned with what's seen as "tidy" or "ideal" is literally a Wheeler family moment and it's HILARIOUS
(maybe if Ted finally grew his mane out he would stop catching bad dad allegations)

So in ST1 when Jonathan gives Will the forever famous mixtape he says it contains the following artists:
Tumblr media
In ST1 we listen to two of those artists; Bowie(arguably) and joy division
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So I want to predict that in ST5 (which is going to heavily call back to ST1) we will be hearing from the remaining 2 bands: television and the smiths
Now I absolutely hate morrissey so you’d have to actually pay me to sit down and predict which smiths song it will be but I think in the case of Television it might be pretty clear which song it could be—which is also coincidentally their most popular
So if you’ve ever listened to television you’d know that their lyrics are notoriously vague and poetic and hard to interpret, but for our specific purpose I think it’s pretty on the nose on what (and who) it would be about.
Tumblr media
It’s about Will’s past and his experience with the hive mind.
“The embrace of life” could refer to him overcoming the HM with the power of love, however the “kiss of death” would then be an interesting and rather romantic way of describing the events that took place beforehand. That is of course, unless there was something about the power afforded to him by the HM that Will found alluring/could still be subconsciously drawn to….
I think in ST5 Will will be seriously tempted by evil. Not controlled, abducted, or possessed, but tempted.
With the Mind Flayer back in ST5 we will see Will struggle with the dark allure of power and his relationship with Vecna will be kind of like that of a trickster at a crossroads. Vecna will try to make Will fall in order to gain whatever power he’s seen in Will, and Will will have to resist the calling of being part of something greater once more.
In essence the song Marquee Moon is about wanting to change, about being unsure of that change and ending up back where you started. I think it is a more experienced and mature version of Should I Stay or Should I Go from S1 which would make it a very fitting addition to the final season. In the song there is also a reference of a mentor figure— which could really be anyone but I think we’re all thinking of the same person…
Tumblr media
Queer Henry let’s gooooooooooo
I wanted to point this out because I think that the relationship between Will and Vecna/Henry will definitely be much more than just a trickster at a crossroads that I previously described and instead more like that of a corruptive mentor— think Anakin and Palpatine. Vecna/Henry will have to make very good points in order to sway Will and Will might even fall for it at the beginning. And here comes the queer Henry theory because Will is going to have see in Henry the closest thing to understanding about his own experience and that is why the pull to the dark will be so strong. So those strong points Vecna/Henry makes will have to be related to their sexuality (wills biggest struggle in the show).
But unlike that bitch Anakin, Will is going to ultimately resist the call because he draws his strength from love instead of hate, etc.
Furthermore, I’ve seen people online trying to interpret the actual meaning of “marquee moon” with the general consensus being that it’s supposed to represent the embodiment of time passing. Often it is interpreted as a marquee like the ones that shift between letters and words and on which you’d have to physically wait in order to get all the information across, but I can think of another “marquee” you’d have to wait on. A sign of metal and glass which is circular— like the moon—; a clock.
Tumblr media
Time is said to be a central element of ST5 and I think that just like the time between Star Wars episodes 2 and 3 during which Anakin’s corruption was slowly building up, Will’s “corruption” will also take place over a period of time, likely starting before the time skip and slowly grating him throughout the years.
Tumblr media
Tl;dr Vecna is going to be a mentor figure for Will and sway him to the dark side, this will likely take place between the two time periods of ST5 and most importantly New York art punk band Television’s hit 1977 song Marquee Moon will be featured at some point.
I also just think that the guitar intro in MM would be a sick transition song to indicate the time skip in the show

Will getting vecna'd, Mike getting vecna'd
I'll give you one better
Will getting vecna'd on Mike's vecna's vision.
VECNA-CEPTION???
Okay but fr - this concept is actually pretty amazing to imagine. Like, I can so easily picture Mike caught in a mental storm as he watches in horror the same thing that Lucas described happening to Max - now happening to Will. Right in front of him. And he cries out, but Will can’t hear him, and then somewhere down the line, he wakes up. Mike, shell-shocked and anxious to no end after that, goes to check to see if it was real or not, going to find Will. And thus… a heart to heart?
Or maybe Will is gone and Mike panics and it’s vision after vision of confusion. Honestly, I think that it would be quite smart for Vecna to use visions to confuse Mike with his feelings, as confusion… seems to be… very effective on Mike. Oh, god. Don’t think about the van scene, don’t think about the van scene, don’t-
But yeah. Along with my opinion that I think that there is no more need for Vecna’ings, I think that this would be plausible as Will isn’t actually being Vecna’d. But who knows. Thanks for the thought! Very intriguing, indeed.

Me when I'm in the car with my family and they bring up Stranger Things, specifically season 4, specifically the Cali plot and I have to act like I'm not completely unhinged and don't run a Byler blog and haven't written like 140 essays on why Mike Wheeler is gay bc my family is part of the "Steve is my favorite character and Will's probably gonna die" crowd so I just have to nod my head in agitated silence when they say "It seems like Mike, Will, and Jonathan were doing nothing all season and I don't understand the point of their scenes" instead of bringing up Jancy parallels and explaining that the Cali plot was a glorified gay romcom building up Mike and Will's relationship because the entire show is a slowburn queer love story

just imagine its the end of season 5 episode 3, byler have had another veiled heart to heart about friendship and whatnot. we see mike walk into his room, a song starts up in the background, he kneels beside his bed and pulls out a dusty box. tentatively he takes it, sitting on his bed and after a few beats he opens it up and takes out its contents: a stack of paper. slowly the camera pans to the letters, all starting with "dear will," and ending with "love mike" but the contents are made up of scribbled words, sentences rewritten time and time over. as he shuffles through them, he starts crying faintly and through choked sobs, he whispers, "im sorry will, im so sorry"
you'll have to stop the world just to stop the feeling
it fades to black and the credits roll
