April 2016 - GNR with Sebastian Bach - My Michelle - One of the Best Performances of the Song I've Seen Since the Original Lineup.
Slash, Duff, Axl, and Sebastian are so into this. Axl loves how Sebastian, as old as he is, still gets up there and head bangs - hard! Slash too. Anyway, the looks on all the guy's faces are priceless. And Sebastian is so stoked to be there. I've been posting too much but saw this and had to share. I'm sure most have already seen it, but if not, here you go. To have seen them in 2016 would have been amazing. The energy and excitement GNR and the fans had at that time was unmatched. Great job, Sebastian. ; ) This is his first time on stage with Axl, Duff, and Slash since 1991. So, 25 years. If I didn't do the math right ... lol. (And you can also see that Richard is ecstatic to be playing with Slash.)

Okay, here's a fun game. Reblog and put in the tags the one song you are literally obsessed with. You could probably listen to just this one song the rest of your life and never, ever get tired of it. What is it?

you know, for all of his faults - and there are many - it is objectively very funny that when asked by a friend to write a song about her, axl rose wrote "my michelle" that begins as such:
your daddy works in porno, now that mommy's not around
she used to love her heroin, but now she's underground
and just proceeds with that tone. like it doesnt really get nicer? i guess the end is hopeful but its backhanded hope.
and that comes after lyrics that detail his friend abusing drugs to stay up and party for days at a time, while also using her friends and other connections so she doesnt have to pay to party or for the cocaine she abuses, and "drivin' [her] friends crazy with [her] life's insanity."
also the final verse starts with:
now youre clean and so discreet i wont say a word
but most of all this song is true, case you havent heard
which, axl, babe, youve spent the past 2 minutes and 45 seconds saying many many words, and also your own lyric contradicts the one that precedes it.
honestly, iconic choices all around.
especially because the friend, michelle young, ended up loving the song??
like talk about tasks failed successfully.

Guns N’ Roses - Appetite For Destruction Debut albums are very tricky to pull off sometimes. In a lot of cases, especially when a band has a lot of hype behind them, the album can either make or break them. That’s where the term sophomore slump comes from, too; in that case, a band’s debut is so good, but when the sophomore album is up to bat, it doesn’t swing as hard as its predecessor. A lot of the best albums of all time are debut records, but debut albums can be interesting, too. I don’t tend to like a lot of debut albums, only in the sense that a lot of debut records don’t show a band or artist at their full potential. They’re most often rough arounds the edges, and just not as interesting as later releases, but every once in awhile, you get lightning in a bottle with an album. Sometimes an album comes together in the perfect ways, and you could not replicate it, no matter what you do. You hear some of those every now and again, where the circumstances of its creation are just so perfect. One of those albums is 1987′s Appetite For Destruction by the band Guns N’ Roses, and before I even talk about this record in more detail, this is one of my all time favorite albums. It’s one of the best albums ever made, and most people would agree with that. You’d be hard pressed to find someone, especially a rock and metal fan, that doesn’t agree with you. Like my Power Trip review from a few weeks ago, this is going to be one of those conversational reviews that isn’t much of a “review,” per se, as it is just me gushing about this album and talking about how great it is. I wanted to review this album, because the record just turned thirty-five, but I just haven’t had a chance within the last week that it officially celebrated its anniversary. I just tend to look at Appetite For Destruction as one of the best debut albums of all time, but just one of the best rock albums of all time, period. This is what I think of when I think of a rock album. Appetite For Destruction is also super interesting within the context of the time period that it came out. You have to think that this record came out in the late 80s, and rock and metal were in a very weird time. Grunge was very much about to be in style, especially compared to the flamboyant hair-metal style that was dominating the charts at the time. Appetite For Destruction didn’t fit that mold, however; the album was catchy, slick, and sleazy (mainly for its lyricism, but its sound had some bluesy sleaze in it), but the music was heavier (some people consider GNR a metal band, but I think of them as more hard-rock), not your sugar-coated pop-metal / hair-metal. There was some authentic about it. They were also armed with one of the best guitarists at the time in the form of Slash, as well as one of the best vocalists at the time in the form of Axl Rose. Those two together made some great, great music, and this album is no exception. Songs like “Paradise City,” “Welcome To The Jungle,” “Sweet Child O’ Mine,” and many other timeless tunes exist across this record, and they’re absolutely fantastic. Chances are you’ve heard at least one of these songs in a movie, TV show, or just on the radio, and that’s another reason why I just love this album so much. It’s stood the test of time all of these years later. Unlike a lot of other rock albums from this time, Appetite has only gotten better. One of my favorite parts of this album is Axl Rose. This band wouldn’t be what it was without Rose, and his vocal performance is one of the best I’ve ever heard, especially for a rock vocalist at the time. He gives Motley Crue’s Vince Neil a run for his money, that’s for sure (and at the same time, Motley Crue were not doing so well). Slash is also a great guitarist, and a lot of the riffs and solos on this record are wonderful, but they don’t ever come in between the catchiness of the songs. That’s the thing I mentioned earlier. This also is still really “heavy,” despite being so catchy and memorable. It’s crazy for an album to have that type of sound. Metalheads could get into GNR for being so heavy and sleazy. but they didn’t feel like they lost any metal cred, while their girlfriends could get into this band for the catchiness and the attractiveness of Axl Rose. It’s one of those albums that existed in multiple spaces at once, versus just being a niche hit for a certain demographic. There’s just something for everyone on this record, and while the album’s a little lengthy (it’s around an hour even), it’s still one of my all time favorites. I’d possibly even put this record in my top ten, it’s that good, folks. If you haven’t heard this album yet, I’d go ahead and do that now. Well, finish the review first, but then listen to it. Most people have heard it, especially if you’re a rock and metal fan, but some people haven’t heard it yet. Appetite For Destruction is one of those essential albums, not just for the 1980s, but for all time. This is an album I’d say that is required listening if you want to get into rock and/or metal music, because this record is still remembered and revered all of these years later, but it’s for the best reasons possible. There are a lot of things to love about this record, even aside from the context and the history of this record, although I do find that to be interesting. I just really love this record, and it’s one of the most influential and important albums in all of music history.
