Dungeon Meshi Episode 7 was super interesting from an adaptation standpoint - this'll be a little different from what I usually write about (though I do still talk about the animation in the full video).
Tumblr media
Studio Trigger have never done a straight-up manga adaptation before - and led by Yoshihiro Miyajima, a big fan of the manga who pushed hard for the adaptation to get made, and who has never directed a full series before, it was unclear if they'd be able to find the right balance between a simple panel-for-panel recreation and making something that's completely different.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And in the first few episodes, you could really feel the tension between the influence of a cautious young creative with great respect for the source material, and a studio with a unique established visual style. It kinda seemed like they were ping-ponging willy-nillily between the two sides of that spectrum.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But this episode showed that Miyajima (and series writer Kimiko Ueno) can take 3 chapters, slice them up and rearrange them into a cohesive-feeling episode while taking into account the differences between screen and page, and using them to their advantage.
Starting with the way the water looks. This line from the manga describes a faint magical glow to the water in this lake and you can see that the cavern fades into darkness above, but Kui's illustration style doesn't really define lighting and shadows very much compared to the cel-drawing style of animation. So the animators took the opportunity to use the water as the light source, and make a whole episode that's lit almost entirely from below. It really gives an otherworldly feeling to this area.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Particularly when the Kelpie shows up, that under-lighting works wonders to define its anatomy within the relatively simple line art.
Tumblr media
What do you do when you can't show the immense fuck-off scale of a monster with a beautiful full-page spread like this?
Well you use what you do have: the ability to move the camera instead. This is such a great way to communicate the scale of this thing, AND such a great way to show some of Senshi's anime-original butt-cheeks!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is one of my favorite shots from this episode - this whole sequence is super hectic, cutting quickly from character to character, but they use tricks like this to keep you from getting confused. This is framed much like it is in the manga, but with the moving image, they're able to use the trajectory of the fish head in the background to lead your eye directly from Chilchuck, right to the point where Senshi pops up in the foreground and transition seamlessly from one character to another!
Tumblr media
Now, it's not all good - I am a bit disappointed that they removed Marcille's own Senshi-style soap-making montage, which was the perfect visual representation of the culmination of the character development and understanding built between Senshi and Marcille.
Tumblr media
It's a shame to see it go.
I get more into that, what else was cut, and much more in this video where I broke down the entire episode!
Check it out if you feel like it. If you don't, jump in a ditch, cover yourself in leaves and jump out at people as they walk by.
Thanks for reading!

On Stone Magic
Hm. Yeah, this was a needed distraction from the atrocity called Waverider. 💀
Notes:
Really needed an excuse why I draw the stonekeepers using elements in my art, ended up getting carried away!
[1] The outfits they're wearing is around post book-4 or 5. My rewrite I jumbled things around, so technically in this timeline he should be wearing his armor in the og series. It's intentional he looked uncomfortable in it. It's a revamped design of his fit in book 6.
[2] Magical fire can only be dispersed by magic. It'll burn forever otherwise. Guess what Emily used on Ippo.
[3] We never really see Emily be silly or undignified, and to me, that's what she was lacking on why she didn't leave much of an impression nor appeal to me. this is an attempt to make it seem like she's still just a kid learning and stumbling and getting into embarrassing situations.
Still haven't finalized the design on Max, but I have some idea. If you noticed, he has the same collar as Trellis, meaning Trellis borrowed some Cielan attire before discovering a healer's robe, which is more elf-like attire.
[4] Trellis's magic may seem silly or trivial than say, what Emily developed to give her advantage in combat. It may also give you the impression he just did it to have an easier time for chores. But if you dig a bit deeper, that's extremely useful magic, especially for a society like Alledia.
[5] the Elf King didn't show up on the other scale because we don't know his level of skill. Other than that, he's insanely powerful.
[6] Every other stonekeeper can manifest both if they're skilled enough, but Trellis was the first to perfect a defensive style and do it consistently.
[7] Just a nice lil joke. Also, Max is wielding an ice pickax that can split into two or combine. Very dangerous.
You can tell I've been rereading wha and dungeon meshi for this.

Do you have any advice/tutorials on how to make healthily round characters? You do them so well!
Hi I really want to answer this with like my doodles and stuff but I’m out (might reblog the stuff later) but so want to say just use a LOT of references. I got used to not using references most of the time because Ive build a somewhat small mental library in my head but certainly its not absolute or perfect, but If I want to focus on a certain piece I really look for references! OR use the mirror.
My main advice
Build a mental library full or references; Even if the reference you compiled are not the same body type/shape, you soon learn to incorporate them in actually drawing round characters.
You can try building this mental library not just by searching online but ACTUALLY STUDYING ONESELF, by that I mean your body. Try taking videos of yourself and pause on frames that could potentially make a good dynamic reference!
Build a habit of drawing different character bodies. I cant say I’m an expert nor really follow this rule since I lack understanding, really but one of my discovered inspirations before I drew characters like these is the Dungeon Meshi Artist. They draw different shaped characters so well, take inspiration from them!
Tumblr media
Pay attention to distribution of fat and muscle. (again I’m not an expert!!!) Pay attention to HEIGHT and WEIGHT of the character. What I usually do is that sometimes I estimate how much torso is going to on or legs so it looks proportionate
I learned that chibi is similar to what Im doing. I guess I learned chibi with round shapes aka bunch of circles and ovals, but irl those are more of chunky sausages(?)
BE CONFIDENT on your SKETCHES. I usually start small in sketching like big canvas/paper small lil “chibi” characters. Practice a pose u like then choose what you want to focus and render on
I feel like I’m saying this more for myself hut fundamentals! fundamentals, fundamentals fun d a ment a l s ! In anatomy, lighting & generally in art is key component to everything really!
Welp might reblog this with some visuals hopefully when I get home! I do think I still need more practice despite all the drawings I made, I feel like it still lacks dynamism that would be appealing at first glance.
if it contributes to anything, I think my coloring also makes the piece “look” soft.

Dungeon Meshi Episode 8 shows us the heart of the series
If you're a new watcher, I feel like Episode 8 is the perfect episode to show off the series' charm as well as hook viewers. For people trying to get their friends into it, it's also the perfect episode to throw them into, to convince them. The art and animation is top notch, with characters being their goofiest selves. The fireside storytelling really lends to the shows cozy atmosphere. The worldbuilding rears it's head as well, with the instance about the guano and slime and the adventurers controlling the population putting into perspective the thought behind the series in a almost meta textual props from Ryoko Kui to herself. And we get to see the beating heart of the series that is Falin. Which is what I really want to talk about.
Falin is quite literally the beating heart of the show. The telltale heart that's been ripped out and is missing, but still beating somewhere within the walls of the dungeon. She is the reason for the journey itself and also how we see the redeemable, caring and loving side of our heroes. Laois as a big brother, Chilchuck as a friend, and Marcille as a... "friend". But despite all of that, she's gone for most of the story. It's not until episode 8 where we learn about her personality other than her being self sacrificing. But that's why it works. She haunts the narrative in so many different ways. In a masterful stroke of storytelling, Ryoko Kui was somehow able to meld gothic romance with a high fantasy adventure. Falin literally haunts the main characters through the architecture, the dungeon itself a constant reminder of their failure and the love the party and Falin have for each other. We see her as small, frail, and weak, but ultimately someone incredibly admirable for sticking to her sense of self, something the narrative rewards her for. This episode also calls back to this empty hole in the party. Falin knows healing magic. Falin knew about the slime, she might've known about the Undine. Falin was at harmony with many of the things they find themselves coming up against. There's also a sharp contrast between what I can only describe as Marcille's "failgirl" tendencies and her reputation as a prodigy with Falins reputation as a slacker and the constant invoking of her name in a manner akin to a savior, someone who would know what to do. This episode completes the picture, in a very early rough draft sense of the phrase, of Falin and the motivation behind the journey. They have to rescue her, yes, but she isn't a damsel in distress. Because they've already failed her. She's dead. All they can hope for is to be able to somehow revive her and maybe redeem themselves in the end. And she was a vital member of their party in so many ways that her missing presence is felt almost through the entire journey. Finally, that little part about Falin being lonely until Marcille showed up puts a bow on top of everything. Her loneliness in the past contrasts with how alone she must be in death, another specter of a thought that hangs over them.
P.S. I gotta gush about the worldbuilding cause I really didn't appreciate it the first time around that I read it cause watching that guano and slime scene animated made me flashback to my first D&D campaign where I'd given one of my players some magic beans. The dungeon started in a cave filled with bats before going on with proper cobblestone and torches and other dungeon fixtures. The bean player asked if there was any bat guano on the ground and scooped it up. When the climactic fight of the dungeon was near its end, the players having found a really great strategy to wear down the boss to his last few hit points, the bean player made a really high DC roll to throw both the guano and beans into the boss's mouth, killing him using the instant growth effect of the magic beans. At the time I was so impressed by what my player had done because I hadn't even considered what the guano could be used for until the fight happened. It was such a taken for granted feature that there's just normal dungeon stuff in a dungeon. You don't really ask about the mundane, even though they're there. It's kind of like a painted on door, if you wanted to interact with it, it opens up a whole room of new possibilities. And Ryoko Kui turned that whole premise of accepted fixtures into an amazingly vibrant world. Dungeon Meshi manages to explore the relationship of the world with itself while keeping a really cozy and kind heart and I feel like that can't be admired enough.

Winter 2024 Anime watchlist
1. MASHLE: MAGIC AND MUSCLES Season 2
I really liked season 1, very fun, hilarious, the perfect anime to have a good time. Watched the new episodes and I'm still on board!!
2. Dungeon Meshi
For some reason, I think there's something missing for me to be completely invested in it, but I like it! The art style is really good and colorful, the characters are fun and I love all the cooking stuff, so i'll keep watching.
3. Solo Leveling
It's too early for me to really know if I like it or not. I haven't read the webtoon so I'm going in totally blind. For the moment, there's nothing new or groundbreaking, but I'm intrigued!
4. BUCCHIGIRI?!
I was actually excited about this one, I like new animes, especially original creations, and it was directed by Hiroko Utsumi, so I had to add it to my list! I watched the first episode and it's not really what I expected after watching the trailer, but it seems fun enough to continue, I'm curious.
5. Cherry Magic!
I watched the drama and it was so so cute, I couldn't skip the anime, honestly. The first episode is good, nice paced and the animation is cute!
6. Mr. Villain's Day Off
Cute anime, a very enjoyable slice of life where we follow a villain on his days off. Nothing much happens, the mc is just obsessed with pandas and sometimes interacts with other characters, but it's nice when you just want to watch something and chill.
Animes that are still airing and that I have yet to start:
Frieren
The Apothecary Diaries

sunny sunny sunnnfish ask game timeeee any thoughts on miyazawa (miyano-hanzawa) :) also curving out of left field but any thoughts on chilshi dungeon meshi ?
HI MALT. IM SO SORRY THIS IS SO LATE. GENUINELY DIDN'T SEE THIS IN MY INBOX.? but anyways. hehehehh. so like. miyazawa. upon my very first reading of sasamiya i had the tiniest feeling that hanzawa could've had a crush on miyano. i can't remember specifically why. hes just kinda... weird about miyano sometimes. so like. it does compel me and kinda makes sense...? but like the thing about hanzawa is that i think he holds his feelings inside him for very very long times. even if he did have feelings for miyano like. that would stay bottled up in a corner of his heart for five years minimum. he also seems like the. if you love them let them go type. if we're in a world where miyano still likes sasaki then he would just. let that happen. as for miyano... hmmm. its almost like. i can't see him ever really developing feelings unless someone confesses to him first..? i have a hard time shipping miyano with anyone else because sasaki is just sooooo perfect for him. like the way it developed couldn't have happened with anyone else. so like. it all does compel me but in a like. hanzawa character study way. and miyano's just kinda there. and like miyano certainly does respect hanzawa a lot !! but maannn i just really can't see miyano falling in love with anyone else. (probably could with prompting by someone much better at writing than i am though... im never opposed to anything)
and then curveball chilshi dungeon meshi.... honestly have never really seen the appeal...? but i think its cause like. dungeon meshi is one of those things that so perfect to me, especially in its existing relationships, that like. i don't want to change any of it. i do think the combined dad power is really funny though. and they've got a fun mutual respect for each other. so its like i do kinda see why people would ship them but at the same time it feels a little bit like pair the spares. and the fact that they don't have any like prominent ship-worthy relationships like farcille and sometimes labru. so its like oohh chilchuck and senshi don't have a super homoerotic friendship with someone... why not just pair them up instead. but it really is mainly i just love dungeon meshi so much as it is that adding like. random romantic relationships to the existing relationship dynamics is so unnecessary to me. BUT all that to say i'm not against it at all and i do like seeing art and stuff of them :3

Sooo I was tagged by @nanomooselet (sempai noticed me ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) no but really woooow a person with so much such cool trigun meta knows I exist? I’m literally starstruck)
But I’m stupid and I don’t know who to tag in return :( I’m not even sure I know how to see who I’m mutuals with? I’m a technological granny that’s all anyone needs to know about me lol
But the questions are actually different:
Last song: Not Found by Buck-Tick. That’s a great song, I kinda forgot existed and actually expected to listen to Mudai (which means “No name”, so, it’s not that weird to confuse the two).
Favorite color: green. Deep moss green is the best, but any hue is great.
Currently watching: ugggh. Thanks to my husband I watch ongoings now ( >___>) they are suddenly really good. Everybody knows Dungeon Meshi, I think. It’s already a cult classic as a manga and Trigger continues to make history. I’ve juuust finished Frieren and Apothecary Diaries, Bucchigiri and Warumono San no kyuujitsu, Yubisaki to renren and Majyo to Yajyu. Have started Yoru no kagame wa oyogenai (PLEASE WATCH IT. JUST FOR THE CINEMATOGRAPHY ALONE! PS - god I love the way anime of this new decade uses “camera movement” and colors. Tengoku daimakyo and Chainsawman are probably the best examples here, but this slice of life/music dramedy already looks amazing) and Shyuumatsu no train wa doko e iku (this is boringly simple in the art department in general but the promise and the visualization of the surreal parts is really good, I’m hooked!). Gmg. I do watch movies as well, like, Poor things and Aliza Frankenstein are extremely good. Dune is very beautiful. Mami Wata is a black and white gem of a movie. But I think I should shut up already.
Sweet/savory/spicy: savory I guess? However I’m not a native English speaker and had to google for some time as I’ve previously considered savory not a taste, but… a feel? Dunno.
Relationship status: married. As for friendship, it’s mostly online as most my beautiful ladies live far away ~_~
Current obsession: Trigun. And. Like. Really. It is an OBSESSION. I love all the characters, I literally fall asleep and wake up with them on my mind. I’ve made myself a felted Vash toy. I’ve watched Stampede twice (don’t look at the number of things I watch. Without my husband I can’t finish shit. But this! I’ve screencapped every second of it it seems. I’ve read manga in English and Japanese (and sometimes badly translated to Russian for the lulz - there’s so much swearing it’s basically a different story). I’ve committed two art pieces for the first time in my life. I’ve put art on my walls and my laptop. And I even returned to reading fan fiction after almost a decade of staying away from ao3 (no shade here, I just never loved anything as much as to need any additional materials. Except for Hannibal. But that show was too perfect and didn’t need anything but deep analytics on the symbolism). Hmh. I want to plug “Becoming Eden” by Lenipes here. It’s so good it has become a fourth trigun “canon” for me.
Last thing I googled: how does savory taste lol
Hehe. That’s so long. I guess I just wanted to vent a bit?
Who can I tag? @6wings-manyeyes @esotericbird
Sorry to bother you. No pressure and all that~ just a little tag game to get to know mutuals better.

Note
my love for chilchuck is singlehandedly spoiling me all of dungeon meshi. i have the tag filtered but everytime i see a post pop up im like "ooh maybe this is another chilchuck to look at :3". a solution is to read but i dont have time for it right now (and i refuse to watch the anime because the manga was on my list before the anime was announced).
im in spoiler hell but its worth it. to look at chilchuck. surely
i feel you anon...
i don't WANT spoilers but also. also. my boys. my sweet perfect boys. i want to see art and meta and fic and AH... MAJOR SPOILER... this is my own fault 😔
the anime is very good, but if you wanna get to the manga first that's understandable. i hope you can find time for it someday!!

My name comes from “The Legendary Starfy”, which was a nintendo ds game I played as a kid!! The main character is a little star prince who’s very clumsy and cute, which I relate to [not the prince part… unless someone wants to make me their prince..? jk… unless..?] so I picked that name for myself after I transitioned!!
I really love art and writing, nintendo video games, all board games, listening to music like 24/7, and nature journaling!!
I am a chronic insomniac so I am excruciatingly eepy aaaall the time, but I love a good snuggle in a cozy bed!!
I am currently exploring the furry community, trying to figure out if I’m into that!! I have absolutely no issue with furries, y’all are cool as fuck!! I am just still unsure if I like it/how I like it!! I am currently in the process of making my first fursona, so if anyone has any tips I’d love to hear!!
Special Interest: art [specifically character designing] + writing [specifically dialogue]
Current Hyperfixations: Animal Crossing New Horizons, Skyrim [especially Miraak and Hermaeus Mora, Sheogorath, Cicero, etc.], Puss in Boots The Last Wish, Pokemon Scarlet [especially Arven], Dungeon Meshi, Our Flag Means Death, Sundrop/Moondrop from FNAF, Fallout games [especially Charon from FO3, Arcade Gannon from FNV, Hancock from FO4, MacCready from FO4, Nick Valentine from FO4, Kellogg from FO4, etc.], Spider-Verse [especially The Spot/Johnathan Ohnn + Miguel O’Hara], The Arcana [especially Muriel, Valdemar, Julien, Asra, Vulgora, + Valerius], Madhouse Mike from Cryptid Crush, Eddie Brock/Venom, Ultron from Marvel, Nathan Summers from X-Men/Deadpool, Otto Octavius/Doc Ock from Spiderman, etc.

Tumblr media
ABOUT MY BLOG:
This is an 18+ ONLY blog, so minors DNI!!
This blog is intentionally anonymous, so I will not be posting any irl pictures of myself or other personal information other than my name!! Please do not ask for any irl pics or info, or else you will be blocked!!
I wish to use this blog to explore my sexuality through primarily writing [with both fully original content as well as fanfic type of content], but I might eventually include some artwork!! I will be writing things that turn me on and that I fantasize about, but I am also interested in collaborating with people if they send me their prompt ideas!! I will only write things I am mutually into, so if I deny your request please don’t take it personally!!
I have been writing for years, both casually and professionally, but I am currently trying to mix up my style and improve my skills overall so please be patient with me if things aren’t going the way I intend at first!!
Tumblr media
ABOUT MY SEXUALITY:
I am attracted to ALL genders/non-genders, both sexually and romantically!! I am polyamorous, but I am not interested in engaging in serious relationships through this blog!! I already have partners irl, so I am simply here to flirt and be slutty on the internet!! I welcome engagement with my content, but I have the right to set boundaries and block people if I feel uncomfortable with anything!!
TURN ONS: bondage, size difference, age gaps, being dominated, praise, rough play, [in very specific and safely set up situations] CNC, creampies [but NOT true impregnation], edging, overstimulation, use of toys, soft pain [bruises, light slapping/spanking, hair pulling, etc. cuz I am a big baby lol], crying kink, biting/marking, cuckholding, voyeurism/exhibitionism, sounding [obv not receiving cuz I have a boycunt, but watching it is just lovely!!], possessiveness, corruption kink, roleplaying [especially with mild power play scenarios like professor/student, boss/employee, but it has to be 18+ no matter the scenario], free use kink, tentacles/monsterfucking, choking, rimming, anal and vaginal, oral [both giving and receiving, but damn giving is so divine], fingering, body worship, nipple stimmulation, bullying/degradation [but when it’s mixed with praise, ie “you’re my perfect little dumb slut… good for nothing other than my pleasure…”], growling/animalistic/predator/prey, being pinned down, nicknames for me [ie good boy, sweetheart, cumdump, pretty boy, etc.], nicknames for partners [ie daddy/mommy but not in a step fantasy way, mistress/sir, etc.], gangbangs/threesomes/foursomes, partner swapping, double penetration, fear play [but in a safe/consensual manner with no real harm attached], etc.
UNSURE KINKS: full BDSM, hard pain [intense slapping/spanking, cuts, etc.], spit [I like the idea of it, but I sometimes get icked out by it before I can even enjoy it lol], dominating others [I am definitely not a dom naturally, but I feel like I might enjoy exploring it a little bit eventually], light pet play [not interested in full acts of pet play, but I love being someone’s cute little bunnyboy/puppyboy], nipple clamps [I have really sensitive nipples, so it sometimes is just too painful, but I am in search of ones that aren’t so painful so I can actually enjoy it lol], blindfolding [makes me feel a bit claustrophobic still, but I can see myself getting more into it], etc.
HARD NOS: foot fetish [sorry!! I just have a foot phobia!!], extreme aggression/violence, tickling, any unhygienic fetishes [this includes piss, sorry!!], food related fetishes, giant/ess related fetishes, inflation kink, CBT [obv not the therapy lol], pegging someone else [I love to be pegged and watch others do it tho!! I just don’t like to do that myself!!], using gags [these unfortunately make me feel unsafe, so I don’t like them], swallowing cum [devastated by my inability to do this, it’s just too yucky of a taste and texture for me lol], fisting, wax play [too messy and again yucky texture], age play, step fantasy, slave/master dynamic, etc.
Tumblr media
CONCLUSION:
Please just try your best to be kind, patient, and respectful!! I will of course always do the same, cuz mutual respect is so important especially in these types of intimate spaces!!
Feel free to send me messages/asks with requests!! I am very friendly, but I am also very shy so I might need a little bit of practice doing this online before I get fully comfy with collaborating!! Anyways, thank you for reading!! I look forward to seeing where this blog takes me!!

Kris year in review (in which i talk about everything i remember that i watched and played and read) bc I like to talk about things . this is so incredibly long do not feel like you have to look at this okay guys. okay. I already wrote this up so im just gonna post it
Games I played:
AI: The Somnium Files - a fantastic game I highly recommend if you like weird characters and stories and are a fan of visual novels/adventure games <3 super fun
13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim - AMAZING cast of characters and fun gameplay I didn’t want to stop playing, great plot I will be thinking about forever…
Bugsnax - very funny and cute and I loved catching every bugsnax and the fun characters I want to play the 2nd one when it comes out
Psyconauts - a cult classic for a reason. Loved it’s style but the final level is so bad I would not wish it upon my worst enemy. Looking forward to finishing 2 one day
Xenoblade Chronicles 3 - I haven’t gotten to finish this one yet (I got 80 hours in okay??) but I’m incredibly excited to get back to it. GOTY BABY!!! GAME OF ALL TIME!!
Nier Automata - ALSO THE GAME OF ALL TIME this is a must play it broke me it healed me it made me see the beauty of art and story telling that games are capable of it’s really just fantastic. for the love of god do not stop after ending A. Love this game so much.
Ongoing Manga I am currently reading
Chainsaw Man - starting off with the best one. CSM is so incredibly important to me and one of the best stories I have ever read. if you have talked to me at ALL you know how I cannot shut up about Denji and i AM NOT SORRY!!!
I Want to Hold Aono-kun so Badly I Could Die - fantastic supernatural/horror themed romance and one of my favorite romances I read this year
Black Clover - made me realize how truly trash bnha is at writing women lmao. Good battle shonen but nothing overwhelming special about it. It understands the basics and does them all well
D Gray Man - didn’t catch up on this one yet but it’s got great characters and some of the worst action paneling I’ve ever seen.
Dungeon Meshi - y’all were right it’s funny and can be very touching at time
A Condition Called Love - I can fix him romance but make it not feel toxic the manga. Super cute I love them.
Toilet Bound Hanako-kun - I feel like I started this last year but I know that can’t be true… supernatural + romance + cute art. It’s made me cry.
Jujutsu Kaisen - loved this baby and then I caught up to the current arc and it was the worst shit of all time. Megumi my depressed king.
Frieren Beyond Journeys End - fantastic please read it I love these bitches so much
Spy x Family - it’s SxF it’s good we all know this
Manga I finished reading
Cardcaptor Sakura - I think this is my first CLAMP manga I finished. LOVED sakura and shaoran they are so small. so many good aspects to this series and then all of the age gap bullshit is there so IDK hard to recommend but I enjoyed reading all of the parts that weren't about horrible relationships
Horimiya - CUTE I love romance where you get to follow them as a couple <3 there were a few bad spots in it (miyamura's piercings being compared to self harm in that one chapter.......???????) but over all a good read
Astra: Lost in Space - fun scifi adventure with good characters. pretty short and easy read. its fun
You Got Me, Senpai - SO CUTE one of the best relationships I've read in a manga. adorable.
Drowning Love - verrry good and complex, a mature story with darker elements (check out trigger warnings for it) and a very engaging coming of age story about two kinda horrible kids with too much attention pointed their way living in a small town. anime adaptation WHEN
Wake Up, Sleeping Beauty - super cute romance, supernatural elements. loved it
Orange - think this would be a perfect read if the time travel element wasn't explained like That and also Suwa >>> Kakeru and what they did to his character in that bonus story was just mean
Goodbye, Eri - everyone should read this. beautiful, stays with you. fantastic exploration on what arts purpose is
A Kiss, For Real - it was cute. the summary makes it sound more romance focused than it actually is, there is a lot of focus on the MCs journey of growth and what she wants to do with her life. Romance was cute but not exceptionally so
Takopi's Original Sin - overhyped as hell. depressing outlook on life. thought some of it was fine but it is overall too cruel to say i enjoyed it, especially with a cast this young
The Girl From The Other Side - I actually 100% cannot remember if I read this last year or not. anyways. BEAUTIFUL art, great characters, compelling mysteries
Junji Ito's Dissolving Classroom - not his best work by far, but it is one of his earliest so I don't care too much.
Spotless Love: This Love Cannot Be Any More Beautiful. - I haven't been adding the ones that aren't popular unless I really enjoyed them, but idk this one is just so wild I felt the need to throw it on here. girl who loves to clean x child assassin is certainly a relationship dynamic. they're funny
Anime I watched <3 THIS SECTION WILL BE LONG SORRY
Akiba Maid War - this is not very good but it is entertaining so...
Ano Hana - rewatched this one finally! still one of the best dramas of all time. did you know childe and jintan have the same english VA bc I know. I know this now.
BNA - the plot point about how the furries were victims in the literal real world holocaust made me kind of hate this I won't lie. also the best friend fox girl Nazuna is one of the most unbearable characters ever. when you lead a cult pretending to be an important religious figure to a culture you are not part of because you like attention i guess?? it is not a good look in a show that already deals so heavily in antisemetic themes & imagery for it's villains.... sorry to whoever recommended this to me :( great animation
Dance Dance Danseur - did not like the MC but I did like the FMC and Rival character, good animation. I read the authors shoujo title Drowning Love this year and it should've gotten the adaptation TBH but this was fine, last few episodes carried
Death Parade - rewatched this one this year and it is still amazing. OP is still one of the best out there.
Do It Yourself!! - not incredibly remarkable yuri bait with a fantastic art style. its fine if you like cute girls doing cute things while being gay genre
Erased - for a mystery story the culprit is laughably obvious. the rest of it is pretty good though. oh lol other than the weird jokes about the protags taste in girls but it never followed through on anything so compared to other series im too tired to care
Keep Your Hand's Off Eizouken - starts off strong but I couldn't keep caring by the end tbh. it does not help I started it and then stopped for like 7 months and then finally finished the show so that's probably rly affecting my feelings
Today's Menu for the Emiya Family - certified apron boy moment
Fire Force - do NOT fucking watch this show is is so actually bad. However. Arthur is so funny I have to finish the series
Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works - rin best girl. maybe fate isn't so bad after all.
Fruits Basket (2019) all seasons - LOVE ME SOME SHOUJO!!!! it slays everyone needs to watch this NOW
Jujutsu Kaisen 0 - fantastic movie i need to watch it again
Kaguya-sama Love is War - only watched the first season but it's fun, not the best without breaks. the people saying this is the best animanga romance need to read more shoujo though
Mob Psycho 100 s3 - I cried. It's beautiful. I don't need to say anything else
NGE - this was a rewatch a long time coming. Truly didn't understand shit watching this as a teenager lol. it's better than I could've imagined and a lot of the criticisms i used to have were actually stupid and a byproduct of not understanding what it was doing
Sarazanmai - 10/10 gay kappa connections cycles trauma love mafia boxes cops otters I WANT TO CONNECT, but.........
spy x family s1 - its good its sxf
Zombieland Saga + Revenge - first idol anime I watched. the main girl was way too relatable for comfort. good time.
Movies I watched (I am bad at talking about movies sorry)
Turning Red - super good loved the everything I can’t believe it came out this year. I’ve watched it 3 times.
Scream (the entire movie series) - it’s scream baby idk what else to say. First one is fantastic the rest are okay I guess but man… that first one is just sooo good it’s hard to live up to it
The Sea Beast - fun movie! Almost forgot I watched it
Monster High: The Movie - perfection 10/10 high art it should’ve been called Monster High: The Film
Skinamarink - loooove me a horror movie that says fuck doing what other movies do I am doing my own thing. Did not actually love the thing it did but it’s definitely not a bad movie
Wendell & Wild - STOP MOTION SWEEP !!!! Great movie I will return to on future Halloweens. Think the plot got a bit too big for the movies runtime or whatever but I really don’t care bc it was good so whatever
Disney’s ZOMBIES trilogy - bad.
Disney’s Descendants trilogy - bisexual. Less bad than zombies
The VelociPastor - a masterpiece baby!!
Glass Onion - absolutely fantastic, words can’t describe how fun this movie is
Pinocchio - stunning stop motion and a beautiful story that brought me to tears. icon.

Bimonthly Media Roundup
-Alien (Movie) - Alien was re-released in theaters so my friends and I went to see it. Still a great movie, Ripley is a badass, the cat survives, the Xenomorph is an incredible design, the building of suspense and set design is great, it's a classic for a reason. My one critique from my ADHD brain is that it would be nice of a few of the longer drawn out set establishing scenes were condensed a bit, not because I'm against suspense but because they went on a bit to long that the suspense turned to boredom for me occasionally. That's a small critique though, the creativity of the alien designs and behavior definitely drowns it out in the long run.
-The Mummy (Movie) - Another re-release in the theater, this was a fun one to re-visit. I mean that in a very literal way, The Mummy is the kind of campy adventure mixed with comedy and slight horror elements that I wish they made more of anymore. Egypt as a setting is severely underused in my opinion and the setting was gorgeous. Speaking of gorgeous so was everybody in this film. I can see why it was such a bi-awakening movie. The romance was cute and well established for the kind of movie it is and there's always something interesting pushing the plot along. It is kinda strange how truly bad the guys trying to prevent people from waking the mummy are at their jobs but that's more of a funny flaw than a serious one so whatever.
- Fallout (TV) - Having fun so far, good characters, fun writing, and the use of flashbacks in storytelling is intriguing.
- In Stars and Time (Video Game) - Watched the full playthrough and I'm definitely interested in seeing more, this is a super charming game with a great concept and some absolutely killer dialogue and scenes (I love you time loop stories). Every character is lovable, Siffrin and Loops designs are fantastic, and the game is full of really interesting lore and mysteries that you can sort of piece together on your own once you understand the rules of this universe. In terms of media I like it does score the perfect five of having good comedy, likable characters, good art, genuine emotion, and fucked up but well explored concepts.
- Dungeon Meshi (Anime) - Fucked Up Monster Lady Hot.
- Six (Musical) - Went to see Six live with my sister and it was a lot of fun, more so than I expected to be honest. The dancing was neat, the outfits sparkly, the whole cast had amazing voices, and while the songs definitely lean into the corniness they are all catchy and fun which I appreciate.
- Pokemon Infinite Fusion (Video Game) - Beat the first Elite Four and absolutely love my team. Currently in Johto having fun building a second one. Highly recommend this game, it's a lot of fun with a lot of extra little quests and fun dialogue on top of the amazing fusion sprites.
- One Piece (Anime) - Finally got to Yamato and yes I do love him. Great design, and he's nice and stupid, great character traits.
- Genshin Impact (Video Game) - Yup.
Listening To: Nonsense Speaker by 000, Tounges & Teeth and Metaphor by The Crane Wives, Six the Musical OST, Ghost by Justin Bieber, Meant to Be Yours by Ryan McCartan, How Did You Love by Shinedown, Stray Italian Greyhound by Vienna Tang, Creep cover by Daniela Andrade, Let's Get This Over With by They Might Be Giants, Dial Drunk by Noah Kahan, and Humans by GEN.KLOUD.

Nine Mutuals I'd Like to Know Better
Tagged by @un-local
3 Ships
OCXCanon - Like everything I do is this. Idk this is what fuels me. Tbh let me gush about 3 of those here.
Wol/Estinien - My Warrior of Light Ahya is a monk first. She learns the healing arts of the stars later. I want to rewrite first steps of faith where she like grabs on one of the dragon killers and launches herself onto the dragon's back. This actually doesn't work and Ahya injures herself p badly. Like NEEDS time to rest and recover before like... doing her monk shit again. Estinien actually finishes the job of killing the dragon here and is like 'ur reckless wtf was that you're not a dragoon' (would make a good dragoon later. yes he will train her in that way later). But during recovery she studies astromancy to help her own healing. Anyway these 2 are like
Remilia(my sorcerer)/Ennui(dnd npc)/Mordecai(dnd npc) - (yes at this point its ocxocxoc but I love them). 3 nerds together. Remilia learned the divination magic she so craved from Mordecai. She learned a lot of basic survival and like magical creatures from Ennui. And like theres a level of vulnerability Remilia feels she can have with them instead of like current party bc of how she was kjinda dragged in. I've (in character) have been writing letters to them for the whole mission (just over a month in game time)(we aren't even done)(have just 'been gathering allies to stop the cult')(still have to like.... actually do that whole siege sequence)(I BELIEVE IT WILL COME BACK I AM MANIFESTING THIS). Even tho this campaign has been on hiatus for like years I do not care I still think about them. I am a fandom of 1 so I'll keep ship sailing myself if I gotta.
Castlevania OT3 (Alucard/Sypha/Trevor) - I REMEMBERED A CANON CHARACTERS ONE HOLY SHIT. Idk their dynamic was real good in the show that i still gotta finish maybe someday.
Also remembered like D/Rogier, Rogier/Tarnished (there is not enough english fics for my favorite mageboi),
First ship
Dude I have no clue. Prolly like Ed/Winry or like... Hien/Kurama from Yu Yu Hakusho. I've been smooshing characters together like dolls for years.
Last Song
youtube
So this is Remilia (Vampire Bloodline Sorcerer) asking Bael'eari (High Elven Light Domain Cleric) to come back to Dawnhurst (city where she lives) Notably he worships the sun goddess Zephella. ("Its called DAWNhurst Bael!")
This has been in my mind rent free for past few days and I just am in mad dokis for this elf.
Currently Reading
The last thing I read was Dungeon Meshi. Which is a perfect fusion of my interests in food and fantasy.
Last Film
I...cannot remember tbh.
So last game I played is En-Garde! because its basically a lighthearted videogame version of my rogue in Curse of Strahd. Yes I bought it because her and the main character have basically the same model (my girl only just doesn't wear a hat at this point in time to which the DM showed me the haberdashery's shop inventory)
Currently Craving
Meat. I desire meat cooked over fire preferably on a stick. I want to taste the char. I want to taste the smoke.
I'm too tired to tag people rn if thou wishest to participate please feel free to do so. I doth not have the mind to think of people's names at this time.

Caity's 2023 Most Enjoyed List
This isn't a real reclist, but a list for me to squirrel away all the things I enjoyed this year before it's over. It's a little all over the place but this was a mess of a year so I suppose my most enjoyed list can be a mess as well. See you later 2023, don't let the door hit you on the way out.
Media:
1 - "Lena" by qntm. This is a very short story in the format of a Wikipedia article that gives me so many delightful shivery feelings about consciousness and trans-humanism and who owns the rights to machine learning/AI datasets. Very topical this year.
2 - Dungeon Meshi finished its publication and the final chapter made me cry real tears. I've been following the series for 8+ years and it is everything good with comics - art, world building, the engagement and subversion of fantasy tropes, relationships, story, recipes, the casual cannibalism, the ending. All perfect. Ryoko Kui is a genius. I am very excited for the anime airing next week.
"I think the entire point of this journey we went on was about learning how to accept death."
"Meals are the special privilege of the living. In order to stay alive, we need to keep eating."
3 - I read a lot of questionable cnovels this year but I really enjoyed two. The first was The Villainous Shizun Is As Beautiful As A Flower which is a shorter BL Shizun fucker cultivation romance. The arc after the MC finds his father goes on for a little too long (and the timeskip is awkward) but the MC is engaging enough that I didn't mind. This was a very fun quick read that I want to talk more about.
The second was For Love of the Game which is an e-sports danmei where an former actor falls in love with the captain of his fake League of Legends team (lmao). Look. Okay. I was on a kick and actually read FOUR e-sports BL novels this year and this was the one I enjoyed the most. I loved that the MC and ML had an established relationship before ever meeting face to face. Some of the reviews are salty about the ML's sneaky plotting side but both I and the MC were into it! The MC was even into the terrible secondhand embarrassing singing confession scene. But beyond the main couple, I LOVED the side paring of their "old" player and the captain on the rival team. I even got into the stupid video game strategy stuff. I had a great time.
I also re-read Who Dares Slander My Senior Brother and Where is Our Agreement to be Each Other’s Arch-Rivals? now that the translations are finished and enjoyed both of them again free from the tortures of machine translated cultivation terms. I still think both suffer from 3rd act issues. But damn did I like both ships.
(As a note - this is a list of likes but my highest high to highest disappointment cnovel was Cannon Fodder Fake Master Was Stunned After Being Reborn which I'm not even going to link because I'm still mad about it. The idol arc and the triple baby swap reveal made me so crazy invested I was literally telling my sisters the entire plot scene by scene as I read. But the last couple arcs ruined the romance/plot. I HATED the ML by the end. What haaaaappened.)
4 - I remained pretty into the SCP Foundation this year, but instead of the wiki itself, I spent a lot of time listening to the SCP Archives podcast and The Exploring Series podcast episodes. I really enjoyed the radio play aspect of the SPCA but I also enjoy how the Exploring series is just listening to some dude give you lore dumps. Its the ideal painting, journaling, chore, driving, etc. podcast for me. Check out Exploring the SCP Foundation: The ABCs of Death (Compilation) for TWELVE HOURS of great SCPs. Crazy stuff.
5 - Fire Emblem Engage and Fire Emblem Heroes. Not a ton to say on these but I enjoyed them! Ike/Soren continues to cook in FEH and I finished up merging/ascending my Eirika collection because she is the prettiest princess in the entire world.
6 - Among Us. I played..... a lot of Among Us this year with both my discord friends and new friends. Moving on.
7 - Silo on Apple TV. I'm a little burnt out on apocalypse media right now but I started watching Silo when I was also reading Red Rising and it got my brain working on all of these humanity is most human in the soil! the unfeeling earth feeds us! kinda thoughts. Rebecca Ferguson is the prettiest woman in the entire world.
8 - Speaking of digging, @Kala on Tiktok who is tunneling a "suburban mine" under her house, presumably in an HOA community the eastern United States. Kala is actually in the process of being cancelled right now and people are making very boring "I told you so" videos because someone finally snitched on her to authorities for not having a permit to dig, install electrical work, weld, reinforce, "mine", etc. under her property. Obviously this is bad! This is not how people engaging in the social contract/not experiencing some sort of mental illness do things! But I work in Construction/Engineering and am still fully obsessed with her. Hobby tunneling is so fascinating and here is someone who is documenting it for the internet. Let her dig!
Non-Media Related Likes:
1 - Volunteering once a month at my local hospital. I LOVED THIS. I got to hang out with friends and gossip for a couple hours every month, cook new giant recipes for families going through a hard time, and give back. Definitely going to continue this next year.
2 - Summer floating after work in my special "secret" river spot with a big floppy sunhat, a couple ciders, and someone to chat and watch the local birds (herons, turkey vultures, albatross, blackbirds) with. I brought 3 separate dates floating this year and it was the best idea. Will be happening again.
3 - Espresso martinis. I was actually sober for most of this year because I discovered I just like a fancy drink/excuse to go out and don't actually need the alcohol (and it's cheaper). But espresso martinis from this one tiny wood paneled bar in North Portland decorated like a hunting lodge where they make them extra frosted and sweet? Obsessed.
4 - Live music. Nothing as crazy as last year's 23 shows & 2 festivals (thank god) but shouting along to 'Batman' live at the perfect Front Bottoms show in late summer. The Michigander concert that I didn't even want to go to that felt like a house show. The Beaches on Christmas. Tons of local shows at Turn Turn (rip). So fun.
5 - Parasailing. I had never parasailed before my trip to Mexico this year. Who was gonna tell me it fucks! I want to go again right now.
6 - The weird local actor/play scene in Portland. I'm talking about a Cthulhu puppet show, publicly submitted one acts, a live acted Harry Potter rewrite where people shout along to Oppenheimer quotes, a horror fest in a theater so small they make you leave between acts and everyone in the lobby is talking about clown classes, and a one-man gay musical about ghosts. Where else except local theater will you spend $10 and a few hours watching someone pretend sprinkle themselves with seasonings and shove themselves in a large pot. This is the arts, babe. I am only going to attend more of these shows in 2024.

February 2022
Tumblr media
(Source: Urasekai Picnic | Artist: shirakaba)
No. of Reviews: 2
I may not have read many light novels this month but I did get back into manga. This is because I’m currently working in a place where things can get quiet and there’s a lot of breaks so I take the chance to read some manga when no one’s around. It’s too distracting of an environment for light novels but it’s perfect for manga so I thought I’d give some quick thoughts on the manga that I read this month.
Heaven’s Design Team 2 - I read the first volume a couple of years ago and didn’t care for it but the second volume was up for free on BookWalker and I wanted to give it another go after I enjoyed the anime so much. Sadly, it really just confirmed for me that the series works better for me in anime form. It’s not like it’s a bad series but it just doesn’t grab me in manga form.
Boys Run the Riot 1 - I’ve been wanting to read this one for a while. It’s about a high school trans boy who joins up with another misfit boy to create a clothing brand. I really enjoyed the first volume and I especially liked the protagonist and the way that their development was handled. I look forward to reading more.
Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun 7 & Maoujou de Oyasumi 7 - Lumping these series together because all I can say about them is that they were hilarious as per usual. One advantage to wearing a mask is that no one can see the goofy grin on my face as I read these series.
Vanitas no Carte 3 - It’s been a while since I read volume 2 but this is another series that I wanted to give another go after watching the anime and it’s another series that I prefer in anime form. Not that Mochizuki’s art is anything less than breathtakingly gorgeous but I just found the story to be more easily digestible in the anime. Still going to continue the manga though because again the art is gorgeous and I know I’m going to want to know what happens next after the second season finishes.
Shinmai Shimai no Futari Gohan 6 - I don’t know, I used to get relaxed reading this series but it’s started to lose it’s charm on me and I think that’s largely down to how annoying Sachi is. I was hoping she would have matured a bit by now but she’s still just super annoying and drags the series down. I still enjoy the cooking element and the relationship between the sisters that is the heart of the series but I’m not sure I’ll bother reading volume 7.
Nettaigyo wa Yuki ni Kogareru 6 - really good dramatic beats in this volume and I especially liked the regression of Konatsu and the fish symbolism. Definitely excited to get to volume 7.
Otoyomegatari 1 - I’ve read this series in English before but I bought it in Japanese to reread and I’m glad I did. The art is so heartwrenchingly detailed, the setting is fascinating, the characters are charming, and I’d count this among one of the few good age gap romances.
Dungeon Meshi 1 - Another Japanese reread. The charm of this series is definitely the nerdy way that it examines the usual RPG monsters and asks ‘what would this taste like?’ and ‘how would you make a meal out of it?’ and comes up with realistic answers. It’s good fun and I appreciate Marcille’s faces.
BL Metamorphosis 1 - Another one that I’ve wanted to read for a while. This series is about a high school girl and an old woman who bond through a shared love of a BL series. It’s cute and sweet and I love both of the leads. It’s pure joy to read and I can’t wait to read volume 2.
Onee to Suki na Onee-san to 1 - a yuri series about a girl who gets driven out of her apartment by a stalker so her sister arranges for her to stay with her kouhai. This kouhai is in love with the sister and is very pure about her love. This was such a cute and fluffy read and I loved seeing the two leads grow closer. It was adorable and I’m excited to continue it.
Yakusoku to Kotoba o Kimi to - a short (around 50 pages) spin-off of Ikemen Sugi desu Shiki-senpai, which I read a few years ago and really enjoyed, focusing on Rei and Hana. A little bit pricy for the contents but I can’t complain. It was cute and that was what I needed. Worth the read if you like Yuama.
List of Reviews:
Watanare 4
Urasekai Picnic 7
My goal next month is to read Reinou Tantei (Keishi Ayasato’s latest work from last year), the new volume of Kami wa Game, and Hatamaou 16. Slowly working my way through the backlog.
