On Stone Magic

Hm. Yeah, this was a needed distraction from the atrocity called Waverider. 💀

Notes:

Really needed an excuse why I draw the stonekeepers using elements in my art, ended up getting carried away!

[1] The outfits they're wearing is around post book-4 or 5. My rewrite I jumbled things around, so technically in this timeline he should be wearing his armor in the og series. It's intentional he looked uncomfortable in it. It's a revamped design of his fit in book 6.

[2] Magical fire can only be dispersed by magic. It'll burn forever otherwise. Guess what Emily used on Ippo.

[3] We never really see Emily be silly or undignified, and to me, that's what she was lacking on why she didn't leave much of an impression nor appeal to me. this is an attempt to make it seem like she's still just a kid learning and stumbling and getting into embarrassing situations.

Still haven't finalized the design on Max, but I have some idea. If you noticed, he has the same collar as Trellis, meaning Trellis borrowed some Cielan attire before discovering a healer's robe, which is more elf-like attire.

[4] Trellis's magic may seem silly or trivial than say, what Emily developed to give her advantage in combat. It may also give you the impression he just did it to have an easier time for chores. But if you dig a bit deeper, that's extremely useful magic, especially for a society like Alledia.

[5] the Elf King didn't show up on the other scale because we don't know his level of skill. Other than that, he's insanely powerful.

[6] Every other stonekeeper can manifest both if they're skilled enough, but Trellis was the first to perfect a defensive style and do it consistently.

[7] Just a nice lil joke. Also, Max is wielding an ice pickax that can split into two or combine. Very dangerous.

You can tell I've been rereading wha and dungeon meshi for this.

Here are some wips I've been working on...kinda 1st one (should be if it loads) an outfit for Trellis that I kinda was basing off a dragon age concept I find for a dancer costume. For some reason my brain equated gulfen to a desert (I actually think it was because of a comic @motherstone posted mentioning it as a desert, plus what geographical map knowledge I have (headcanons on the way for that btw)) but I thought it would be cool to create a dancer outfit...then decided to put it on Trellis 2nd is Trellis vs Elf king I think I stopped working on it because I still can't figure stone magic too well 3rd is what I was going to do for the Amulet contest, but school got in the way and it's been kinda sitting here. It was going to kinda be a sequel to something else I drew a while back,MN but I decided to do something else instead

Virgil, his father, his mother, and Luger!

I decided to conceptualize what I think they should look, I hated the Elf King reveal so Imma retcon that. I like to headcanon Trellis takes after his mother more, but hoo hahah I wanna write an angsty fic where he doesn't know what she looks like and is instead gets badly triggered when someone expresses their distrust and anger towards Trellis because he shares the face of one of the biggest tyrants ever known. Dw he feels better once he eventually discovers more about his deceased mother

So in a way, I tried drawing the Elf King looking somewhat a stretched version of Luger but at the same time, won't look too out of left field that Trellis would look somewhat likes him when he's older. Virgil as a whole has rounder features

The trio’s combat style headcanons

Yes you will listen to me, who has like, zero concepts of how combat works

Headcanon: stonekeeping is heavily focused on strongest combative moves, as a result any other aspects of it are severely lacking

Trellis

-        Has abysmal attack power, like seriously weak. Absolutely wrecks it as defense and support tho

-        Ok headcanon that dude is like half-blind; so no depth perception

-        Therefore I propose if he would ever take the offensive, none of those would be precision attacks. It is also because of this he doesn’t use a weapon like a staff like his fellow stonekeepers and uses only his hands; weapons are there for precision; not much point if none of your attacks are the latter

-        His attack power only causes serious damage if he has a lot of build up, so as a result most of his offense are non-lethal unlike Emily and Vigo

-        Since Trellis serves more as a support and defense, he has to develop his own style of fighting to address his strengths. He prefers an indirect way of confrontation, so he frequently moves and often covers if possible

-        His fighting style is agile, adaptable, and fluid, but because it is his own creation and not any pre-established fighting styles, to other stonekeepers it is unpredictable

-        I also like to think he learns to heal eventually to fully embody the white mage motif for him lolol

 Emily

-        She prefers it half-based on what she was taught and half her own thing

-        She’s pretty good at improv, so technically what Vigo taught her serves as a foundation for her fighting style and then she develops it from there

-        So it appears familiar to other stonekeepers at first only to unexpectedly get hit by the side from something new

-        Very aggressive and lethal; she is also often in the air, giving her an advantage of height

-        But it also makes her pretty vulnerable because she can’t defend for shit

-        she is however, the fastest of all of them, so watch out

-        She compensates for this by facing the enemy head-on and finish the battle as quickly as possible by dishing out a very strong attack

-        However, because of the aggressiveness, it also causes widespread damage to her surroundings, which can be dangerous for her allies or people in the way; but very useful when facing multiple enemies

-        Like using her staff because it widens her power’s area of reach; it usually forms as a huge wave of flame-like energy

Vigo

-        He’s the only one trained exceptionally thorough; and thus his fighting style is distinct and textbook perfect

-        But it also ends up being the most rigid and strait-laced of the trio

-        Despite his astounding prowess, he doesn’t really have any sort of astounding feature in his fighting style; very balanced in defense and attack, but they are nowhere near as powerful as Trellis’s or Emily’s

-        But what he lacks in flair he makes it up with practicality; he doesn’t waste his moves and he can dish out very precise and powerful attacks

-        It is also because of this he is best on a single duel

-        Prefers keeping his feet on the ground (old and all) and lacks Emily’s speed and Trellis’s agility, but backs it up with battle experience and great skill

-        Also prefers using a staff like Emily

I was thinking about the fact that Trellis and Luger were named after a garden structure and a German pistol, but they sound like legit names. Luger moreso than Trellis. And I came up with the headcanon that elves, rural ones especially, just name their kids whatever sounds good—no regard whatsoever for if it's a name or not. "my child's name is Gamma" "maam that's an electromagnetic wave"

How about Trellis with 11 and 14?

11. Bad or petty habits

- Look, it's canon that this guy actually has a jealousy/envy streak. He's also pretty insecure.

- Has the tendency to be very hostile towards someone when they bring up a convo he doesn't like

- Can be quite petty if pushed hard enough, he WILL say scathing words with the intent to hurt (although depending on the person, he may regret it later)

- Leaves books scattered around a LOT. The mess does not makes sense to anyone but him

- Is very blunt, and does not hesitate to speak his mind, even if it's hurtful or insulting

14. Ingrained habits/forces of habit

- Stocks and hides food all around his room, so he'd have a supply, just in case

- He's quiet, even when he walks and has the tendency to sneak up on people

- He WILL have an alibi for everything he does, even the harmless ones

- Although he's pleased that the lock of his door is on his side of the room, he has the tendency to leave it open

- Hates debts, prefers if his interactions with other people are transactional

Headcanons about Riva's braids!

I've always been pretty interested in her hairstyle... So i made a couple of headcanons abt it!

Typically hairstyles can tell a lot abt a person (status, wealth, religion, etc...)

In this case, it shows how experienced an elf is!

The length of the braid and the amount+color of beads depends on the elf's milestones and accomplishments

Meaning they keep it at a length until something noteworthy happens to them, to which they'll allow to grow for an inch or so and maintain that new length until the next noteworthy thing happens

Typically, it's done via a ceremony by elders

The braids framing the face is a culture practice exclusive to the Ash family (particularly the members who are direct descendants)

The ones who got married in have their own style of braid!

Also ties the braid with a bead of their own creation to make it official ;)

It is an old important tradition that is passed from parent to child! :D

For the request, Trellis reading a book and trying to get Emily into it but she just be bored, bruh, I’m bad at this

"No one is forcing you read it, Emily." He says in exasperation.

"Really?" she scoffs, removing the book from her face. "You're the one who asked me to."

"It's just a suggestion," Trellis reasoned, in his hands also another book. It was thicker than his arm. "Nothing more. I just —" his gaze flitted away, mouth curled, "— I just thought you might like it."

Emily grimaced. He sounded a bit rather hurt. "Ehh hmm, yeah, reading is fine I suppose —" she leans back on the couch, arms on the back," — but I'm pretty sure this hobby is reserved for people over 30 with poor vision."

She cringes. "But uhh you know what? I can be open-minded."

Trellis just rolled his eyes. His attention returns to the book, leaving Emily in embarrassed silence.

She fidgets for a few minutes, a question nagging at her. So she spoke.

"Still, Trellis — why books?" she leans forward, elbows on her knees, curious. "You could pick anything else like —" she gestures vaguely, searching for examples but her pause was taking so long, that it incurred an incredulous look from Trellis. "Like — building stuff or sports or games and whatnot."

She shook her head. But Trellis didn't respond immediately, yet rather seems a bit lost in thought. He closes the book and gingerly places it on the table. Emily was about to assume he didn't understand the question when the silence goes on for too long, when he finally speaks.

"When I first came to my uncle and brother..." he falters, his gaze downwards and away from her, uneasy. She can see him swallow, and then sighing.

"I couldn't read," it was quiet, she almost didn't catch it if she wasn't expecting it — she knows by now that Trellis forgets to speak up to audible degrees. "I couldn't write. I can speak but..." he trails off, voice wavering.

"After, after the things that happened before that..."

"I find myself unable to." he says.

"It was hard for them. And harder for me." he looked desolate.

"Interacting with the adults was just so..." his hand curls into a fist so tight she can see it tremble, "So terrifying. I can't think in their presence. I-I just felt suffocated and trapped." A haunted look overcomes his eyes.

"But people my age — it was—" a deep, shaky breath, "— it was worse, somehow. They asked so many questions, they wanted to know so many things about me and I — I can't confront my own memories at that time. It was — too much."

Emily stays silent. It feels wrong to interrupt him.

"It got my uncle worried deeply. He told me I was like a husk of a child, and that it scared them I was never going to get out of my head."

Trellis closes his eyes, and a bit of the tension leaves his shoulders.

"So my uncle decided to read to me instead."

"And... And it felt calm," he says softly. "Warm. There wasn't any questions, so it was easy. It was fun too, without all the danger. I didn't have to talk to anyone, so I didn't get scared."

He opens his eyes, and this time, they had a hint if sadness. "It became my source of solace ever since."

Trellis lays his hands flat on his lap, staring at them as if they're the most interesting things in the world. "I enjoy reading. I really, really like learning new things. I don't mind talking to people now, but I always see libraries as my home."

His fingers then fidget with one another, and with a timid voice, he says, "I-I thought, just maybe —"

"Geez, you're such an introverted bunch," she says airily, leaning back against the sofa once again.

"Guess I should have expected from a nerd like you." And, she sees Trellis frown at the unfamiliar word. "Also, you're surprisingly talkative whenever the topic of books comes up."

His cheeks flushes and his ears curve downwards. "Ah, uhm, pardon, I'll try to restrain myself in the future." he says, flustered.

Emily shook her head. "I'll get used to it."

She picks up her book, and gives him an encouraging smile. "Say, wanna tell me what this one's all about?"

Like,,, can we all agree that in our heads that all three of mcs are pretty competent and smart kids. They could hold themselves on their own, and pretty reliable all the while

BUT,,, once all three are together, all braincells are thrown out of the window

Ok maybe not all of them because Trellis still has one to keep the two out of their impulsive shenanigans, but this is the Hayes siblings we're talking abt — he's dealing with Emily (who's force of personality compels him to take initiative) and Navin (Navin) and he's friends with both of them, so whatever damage control he does ended up more or less futile

(Emily he can handle alone, but with Navin, whom he's good friends with and is very fond of, well... That's why Alyson is there ok)

Unfortunately,, unlike the adults who spend 99% of the time not paying attention to them, the rest of the squad is aware of this

Leon: ah I sure hope this quest of theirs goes well

Vigo: not to worry, is Trellis with Emily?

Vigo: then they will be fine

ELF HEADCANONS YET AGAIN,, this time abt biology which I have zero understanding of

Elf ears are incredibly important of an elf's identity. It is, technically speaking, what all Elves consider that differentiates them the most from humans. It represents their dignity and sense of honor as an elf

So if it's cut, expect a LOT of ostracization.

The typical punishment for Elves with very heavy offenses is having both of their ears cut, the more severe the offense, the worse the mutilation will be

A nick

Well you did a couple of really messed up stuff. People would probably avoid you as much as possible, very scared of ya prolly

Half cut

WHOO ok people def hate or downright terrified of you because whatever the FUCK you did was pretty damn bad... You get ready living as a hermit because no ONE will bother interacting with you...

HMM... You're either getting lynched or on the trip to the gallows to serve as an example. Yea. Congratulations!! You've reached the nadir of Elven achievement

Symbolism of honor and dignity aside, having the ears cut, even a nick (esp if it's deep enough) will severe an Important nerve connected to the ears tips. Thing is, you know how the shape of our ears allow us to get a better sense the location of a sound source?? Hm. Well, elven ears take that to a whole new level, via those ear tips. So if you cut to a nick or fully cut it off, they'll lose depth perception

The thing is,,, those ear tips are VERY SENSITIVE... Esp to cold so everyone's scared of frostbite because it will Freeze and fall off... Not a fun experience so they make sure to wrap it up properly to avoid this via Special Hat that makes them look Stupid but it's still Stupidly Efficient

So don't touch it!! Touching it makes it feel all tingly and weird, altho it will flick like a cat's... They'd enjoy it a lot of you rub the ears tho, just don't touch that part thank you very much

Elves all have naturally sharp nails. The don't really cut it, since it's pretty darn tough, but more of filing and whittling it down. It's not super fun if they do the WooHoo while having it uncut though, so it became a part of their culture that if their nails are blunt then... Huehuehehue ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Also, very long sharp nails is a sign of the elite and the privileged, since having them long is inconvenient if you're working, so the fact that they're long implies you're so well off you don't need it cut :(

Elves has a special membrane in their eyes that protects it against salt water but not at sand... Yes they are also outraged at this, wtf evolution

Elven bodies regulate body temperature better than humans, but most of them are for extreme heat, a few for extreme cold. They're are some Elves who still have their hibernating gene turned on so when needed they could also survive extreme cold

Their pupils can contract and dilate, so when they're hyped, it goes all round 😁 they can also see in the dark (altho, I think everyone already has that headcanon huh?)

Headcanon: One of the ways I can see Trellis and Riva bonding outside of political work is both gathering ingredients for Riva's concoctions(I forget if this was done before...)

Gift

Trellis already knows the many ingredients Riva uses for her alchemy because he was rised in a village who taught him how to survive in nature, and thus studied the many flora and faun; but he really likes listening to Riva, so he's genuinely invested to what she has to say.

Riva is a bit self-conscious ranting to him for hours about alchemy, but is pleasantly surprised with a change of audience that doesn't groan with boredom or looks thoroughly vexed by what she says.

Bonus:

Foreign guy with no social skills doesn't know how much a gift should cost, shocks local woman by the most expensive gift ever
