What I expect, and don't, from a Scott Pilgrim Season 2
Spoilers for all of the Scott Pilgrim works as I go through various plot points in the comics, and the ending of the first season, into hypothetical expectations if Bryan and BenDavid decide to do another.
What NOT to expect:
Memory Holes
Scott's gaps in memory are a good rug pull to the narration, it allows things we've previously seen to be recontextualized as Scott becomes aware he's not actually the hero. Thing is, Scott already knows this possibility from the end of Season 1 so we don't need it. This isn't a statement of 'no Nega-Scott' but we'll come back to that later.
Kim/Knives
Kim and Knives making out was a tool to set-up a Book 5 plot detail about Kim's relationship with Scott and Ramona. The part of that matters is we need to see Kim isn't straight, and there weren't a ton of female characters who would realistically make out with Kim and weren't busy in another plot. We've done this by having Kim try it out with Roxie, so Kim being bi is established already if they want to do the complicated 'I think I'm in love with either my best friend/ex or his current girlfriend' thing that was a bit of Kim's character. We also don't need to fish for 'reasons Knives is still around' she's in the band now, she's good.
The Glow
This is more of a 'that needed foreshadowing that isn't there' thing and we didn't foreshadow it so it probably isn't there. Ramona got her plot forward and her baggage detonation so it's not super useful anymore.
The Powers of Love, Self-Respect, and/or Understanding
So they could do these plot beats, but I don't think the swords work here. See, the swords work as a perfectly solid 'Scott leveled up' visual by making him cooler. And it plays even better in the movie because of how sword fights film vs. fistfights. Thing is, it's still saying that all 'understanding who you are' or 'respecting yourself and your needs' or 'being in love' is good for is stabbing people? It really feels hollow. Especially compared to Ramona's self-acceptance being 'turn into a God temporarily.' So if Scott gains any of those titles, it won't just be a sword.
Okay now that I've gone through a bunch of stuff I don't see coming up. I'm listing them as 'options' less because any two are mutually exclusive but all four cannot be done together.
Option One: Scott Gets a Life
So Scott didn't get to do most of his character growy things on account of him being dead for Tax Purposes. So he's still a useless mooch without a job, or anything to do other than play music. This isn't necessarily bad, but it is something they have to do something with. First is to do battle of the bands, lean all in on Sex Bob-Omb and the music going forward as the endgame to solve that Kim is also jobless. It isn't terribly grounded (but it could be very pretty visually), so I'm not super sold on it but it isn't off the table. They can also lean into 'Scott can cook' and do his cooking chef route from the books. This is more grounded and also can be visually pretty if done right. They can also do all manner of other job routes for Scott especially if the joke about job class systems because video games!
Option Two: Gideon is Still Evil™
So when Matthew was running from Gideon in G-Man Media's Headquarters he ran into a vault he couldn't blast through. That probably has even cryopods with six occupants. Because Gideon is still the worst. And 'but he's Gordon now' or 'but he has Julie now' are both not answers to the fact that Gideon is meant to be an incarnation of everything Scott could become. Notably Gideon didn't do any of his cool things™ from either book or movie in Season 1. Gideon still punishes women who betray him and Julie hates Scott. Gideon frames his revenge as making Scott suffer it is the perfect in-road to go after Ramona. Putting Julie in the Envy spot from Book 6. Which is even better because the betrayal will feel stronger since Gideon seems to like Julie sincerely.
Option Three: Scott's Ex Quest
So Scott has three significant ex girlfriends to dive in on. (I'm not counting Knives as- well, S1 actually resolved Knives pretty well?) And working through how Scott hurt them, and how they hurt him, and how it changed him would be a good avenue to do his character growth. It's honestly some of the stronger elements of the book looking right at Scott's past sincerely. This is the closest we get to retelling the books, but the twist is probably in execution, or in who else is involved. As all of Ramona's Exes being around and not-evil means we have new in-roads to character development.
Option Four: Nega-Scott/Future Scott
Scott is aware that he could be the problem, that awareness and vigilance makes the book version of Nega-Scott hard to work. The Shadow-Link attacking from nowhere just won't cut it. But we can do a similar thing with his awareness of the potential, a manifestation of his fears. Because this is a Rule of Cool series Scott's Fears becoming a monster makes as much sense as anything. So Scott just occasionally seeing/fighting an EvilRyu!Scott who shows up whenever Scott is especially anxious is entirely acceptable. This especially works if the central theme of the series is Scott trying to become more mature and responsible, having this evil manbaby hunting him represents that nicely.

Dear Mr. Scott Pilgrim,
You have 24 hours to stop looking for validation from your fake-highschool-girlfriend (who you are not actually in love with) due to your own self pity. You also have to apologize to Knives Chau for cheating on her with Ramona Flowers. If you do not do these things, you will be "circumcized."
Good luck.

My Episode 10 easter eggs and references in My Adventures with Superman post is here
(SPOILERS if you haven't seen the show yet):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We start things off with the title of the episode, "Kiss Kiss Fall in Portal" a fun nod to the lyrics of Ouran High School Host club's OP, Sakura Kiss by Chieko Kawabe. Very apt since Clark wanted to show the cherry blossoms to Lois on their date.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next Jimmy razzing Clark for his extremely scheduled date plans for Lois and razzing Lois for her gift to Clark. Each of them reference what happened in previous episodes. With the first thing Clark and Lois I talked about it here and the second thing Clark mentioned I talked about it here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After we cut back from Lois and Jimmy picking up Lois's dry cleaning, we meet the villain of the episode, Mr. Mxyztplk. In the comics, Mxy makes his first appearance in Superman #30 (1944) by Joe Shuster, Jerry Seigel, and Ira Yarbrough as you can see in the page above this text. Mxy is a 5th dimension imp who plays jokes and pranks on Superman and can only be rid of if Mxy says his name backwards. Yeah Mxy is a MAJORLY annoying thorn at Clarks side. MAwS Mxy, as you can tell has a DRASTIC overhaul in design kinda shares color and design choices with Whis from the Dragon Ball Super anime. Also in the show Mxy is a chaos god compared to the annoying imp in the comics.
Tumblr media
Classic way to describe Clark Kent. That's a given in any Superman media.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next we see Mxy mess with Clark by snapping him into his various Superman animation incarnations from the Max Fleischer cartoons, the Superfriends cartoons, and the cartoon that introduced Superman to me, Superman the Animated Series. Shout out to the MAwS team for remembering to give StAS Superman the darker trunks. People often forget that. Same with the red belt on the Fleisher Superman and the cape circling behind the neck of Superfriends Superman when usually the cape exposes the next a lot more too. Very good attention to detail.
Tumblr media
With Lois and Jimmy they meet alternate versions of themselves. We meet two different Loises and one Louis Lane. There actually is a Louis Lane in the comics who has connections to Mxyzptlk.
Tumblr media
In Superman #349 (1980) (W: Martin Pasko, P: Curt Swan, I: Frank Chiaramonte, C: Adrienne Roy, L: Ben Oda), Clark is forced into a genderbent world thanks to Mxyzptlk where he meets, as you can see on the page, gender flipped versions of his Daily Planet colleagues. Clark is eventually able to escape the world and defeat Mxy where he actually meet Louis Lane, Lois Lane's legit cousin. Bonus fun fact Osric Chau who voices Louis Lane, was the Atom/Ryan Choi on the CW DC shows
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The League of Loises have a ship that's kinda similar to one of the ships designed by Rian Hughes and Grant Morrison on the Multiverse Map. I talked more about that map and the multiverse here
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lois Prime here shares similar designs to Fleischer Studios' Lois Lane. Very good homage to the look.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next scene is EASTER EGGS GALORE and the section that took the longest for me to do. When Mxy and Clark break into the Science and Superhero Museum that Lois Prime created, we see a mace and an elaborately designed box of some sort. If you know your DC universe, these two things are a Thanagarian (alien hawk people) Nth Metal (strongest metal in the DC universe) Maces that is usually wielded by Hawkman and Hawkwoman/girl (as you can see both of them wielding their own respective maces on the comic covers here. The first one is from Justice League #15 (2019) done by Jim Cheung Tomey Moreu and the second cover is from Hawkman #1 (2018) done by Stjepan Šejić) and the box is a Mother Box from the New Gods. The Nth Metal mace makes its first debut in the Brave and the Bold #34 (1961) though it resembles more like flails and even then the Nth metal mace is a morningstar, but its alien technology maybe Thanagarians call these weapons maces where here we call it a morningstar.
Mother Boxes are basically supercomputers that the New Gods use. Created by Jack Kirby and debuted in the Forever People #1 (1971), Mother Boxes have a wide range of uses from energy and molecule manipulation, energy transferring, Boom Tube summoning to travel inter-dimensionally or inter-/intra- galactically, machine manipulation. The page from Who's Who-The Definitive Directory of the DC Universe #16 (1986) explains what a Mother Box is in full detail.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The camera then shifts and we see a Green Lantern Power Battery, a T-Sphere, and a book on display. The farthest item is an obvious one, a Power Battery that Green Lantern uses to recharge the Power Ring. This version of the Power Battery and Green Lantern make their debut in Showcase 22 (1959). The final two panels from the comic (W: Jon Broome, P: Gil Kane, I: Joe Giella, L: Gaspar Saladino) shows Hal Jordan recharging the ring with the Power Battery.
T-Spheres are floating spheres used by Mr. Terrific aka Michael Holt. These spheres can form laser grids, act as sensor arrays, bombs, record video and audio, hack into computers, display holograms, and discharge electricity to shock things or people. They make their debut in JSA #11 (2000) as seen there in the middle two panels (W: Geoff Johns, David Goyer, P: Buzz, I: Michael Bair, C: John Kalisz, L: Ken Lopez).
The book is a little harder to pinpoint, but my guess is this is the Book of Souls/the Cosmic Log/The Book of Destiny. If Lois Prime is able to find all this stuff and is able to preserve it in a museum, I wouldn't be surprised if Destiny of the Endless gave her an inert copy of the book for the museum. The book makes its debut in Weird Mystery Tales #1 (1972) (Page art by Michael Kaluta). The book records everything that is, was, and will be. If you haven't read the comics, you might have seen it be used on the CW DC shows rewriting the histories of their characters.
Ok so at the moment I am near the end of my 30 images limit so I will be making another post to hopefully finish the rest, but in the meantime, now that you are down here, feel free to check out the other easter eggs and references posts -

The Sign of the Four: The Statement of the Case
CW for the end of this as it includes discussions of child murder and detailed discussions of capital punishment.
Turbans have never been particularly common in the United Kingdom; these days, they are most likely to be worn by West African women or those who are undergoing chemotherapy.
It was the norm for a married woman to be referred to as "Mrs. [husband's name]", especially on something like a dinner invite. Historically, in the English common law system the United States also uses, a woman's legal identity was subsumed by her husband on marriage, in something called coverture. In some cases, a woman who ran her own business could be treated as legally single (a femme sole) and so sue someone - or be sued. This practice was gradually abolished, but did fully end until the 1970s.
@myemuisemo has excellently covered the reasons why Mary would have been sent back to the UK.
As you were looking at a rather long trip to and from India, even with the Suez Canal open by 1878, long leave like this would have been commonplace.
The Andaman Islands are an archipelago SW of what is now Myanmar and was then called Burma. The indigenous Andamanese lived pretty much an isolated experience until the late 19th century when the British showed up. The locals were pretty hostile to outsiders; shipwrecked crews were often attacked and killed in the 1830s and 1840s, the place getting a reputation for cannibalism.
The British eventually managed to conquer the place and combine its administration with the Nicobar Islands. Most of the native population would be wiped out via outside disease and loss of territory; they now number around 500 people. The Indian government, who took over the area on independence, now legally protect the remaining tribespeople, restricting or banning access to much of the area.
Of particular note are the Sentinelese of North Sentinel Island, who have made abundantly clear that they do not want outside contact. This is probably due to the British in the late 1800s, who kidnapped some of them and took them to Port Blair. The adults died of disease and the children were returned with gifts... possibly of the deadly sort. Various attempts by the Indian government (who legally claimed the island in 1970 via dropping a marker off) and anthropologists to contact them have generally not gone well, with the islanders' response frequently being of the arrow-firing variety. Eventually, via this and NGO pressure, most people got the hint and the Indian government outright banned visits to the island.
In 2004, after the Asian tsunami that killed over 2,000 people in the archipelago, the Indian Coast Guard sent over a helicopter to check the inhabitants were OK. They made clear they were via - guess what - firing arrows at the helicopter. Most of the people killed were locals and tourists; the indigenous tribes knew "earthquake equals possible tsunami" and had headed for higher ground.
In 2006, an Indian crab harvesting boat drifted onto the island; both of the crew were killed and buried.
In 2018, an American evangelical missionary called John Allen Chau illegally went to the island, aiming to convert the locals to Christianity. He ended up as a Darwin Award winner and the Indians gave up attempts to recover his body.
The first British penal colony in the area was established in 1789 by the Bengalese but shut down in 1796 due to a high rate of disease and death. The second was set up in 1857 and remained in operation until 1947.
People poisoning children for the insurance money was a sadly rather common occurrence in the Victorian era to the point that people cracked jokes about it if a child was enrolled in a burial society i.e. where people paid in money to cover funeral expenses and to pay out on someone's death.
The most infamous of these was Mary Ann Cotton from Durham, who is believed to have murdered 21 people, including three of her four husbands and 11 of her 13 children so she could get the payouts. She was arrested in July 1872 and charged with the murder of her stepson, Charles Edward Cotton, who had been exhumed after his attending doctor kept bodily samples and found traces of arsenic. After a delay for her to give birth to her final child in prison and a row in London over the choice the Attorney General (legally responsible for the prosecution of poisoning cases) had made for the prosecuting counsel, she was convicted in March 1973 of the murder and sentenced to death, the jury coming back after just 90 minutes. The standard Victorian practice was for any further legal action to be dropped after a capital conviction, as hanging would come pretty quickly.
Cotton was hanged at Durham County Goal that same month. Instead of her neck being broken, she slowly strangled to death as the rope had been made too short, possibly deliberately.
Then again, the hangman was William Calcraft, who had started off flogging juvenille offenders at Newgate Prison. Calcraft hanged an estimated 450 people over a 45-year career and developed quite a reputation for incompetence or sadism (historians debate this) due to his use of short drops. On several occasions, he would have to go down into the pit and pull on the condemned person's legs to speed up their death. In a triple hanging in 1867 of three Fenian who had murdered a police officer, one died instantly but the other two didn't. Calcraft went down and finished one of them off to the horror of officiating priest Father Gadd, who refused to let him do the same to the third and held the man's hand for 45 minutes until it was over. There was also his very public 1856 botch that led to the pinioning of the condemned's legs to become standard practice.
Calcraft also engaged in the then-common and legal practice of selling off the rope and the condemned person's clothing to make extra money. The latter would got straight to Madame Tussaud's for the latest addition to the Chamber of Horrors. Eventually, he would be pensioned off in 1874 aged 73 after increasingly negative press comment.
The Martyrdom of Man was a secular "universal" history of the Western World, published in 1872.

No Thank You- Miguel x F!Reader
I think it's super cool watching people create their own spidersonas and stories, but I definitely know that there are some of us who just literally could not hold that responsibility. So I asked myself how would Miguel deal with a spider who just straight up ignored the call.
This is a bit self-indulgent. Reader is a chef, but I could really see this scenario with those who are like in the medical field or other industries that are demanding with really strange hours.
CW: sfw, cussing
Who DOESN'T want to be Spiderman? You. You don't.
Miguel was confused.
There were signs of an additional spider-person that should be teaming up with Spiderman from Earth 1616, but it didn't seem like that was happening yet.
He knows you got bitten. He knows you've freaked out over your new powers, but after weeks, you still are going to work, drinking, and carrying on as if you didn't get your genes rearranged.
Peter J. Parker wasn't struggling with any bad guys, but Miguel had a feeling something was going to happen if you didn't start fulfilling your role. Lyla affirmed that all the other Spideys could handle the days' worth of missions, so he allowed himself to leave his office, go to his apartment to change into civilian clothes, and head off to your universe.
...
You just finished going over the day's plan and expectations with your cooks when the bar manager said that there was someone who wanted to talk to you.
For once, you were actually comfortable about how prep was going, so you could spare a few minutes for this whoever.
Jesus Chris-
It had certainly been awhile since you've been to church, but you knew there was a God looking out for you if you got blessed with Mr. Tall, Dark, and Handsome asking for you. You straightened out your chef coat and reached out your hand.
For some reason, he didn't look too delighted to see you and seemed a bit nervous. "Chef Y/N, nice to meet you."
He nodded and introduced himself. "I'm sorry to interrupt, but could we talk outside for a moment." You were expecting some sort of media feature or an interested investor for your restaurant.
You were not expecting to be bombarded with a fantastical story about multiverses and how this gorgeous man, Miguel, was expecting you to just accept being Spiderman.
"Absolutely not."
Miguel exhaled annoyed and confused. "Jodia, what are so you apprehensive about?"
You huffed and threw your hands in the air. "I'm a 27 year old chef with the body of 45 year old. My knees hurt. I'm constantly fending off a drinking problem, and this restaurant is my life." You took a deep breath and sighed. "What's wrong with this world's Spiderman? He's doing a fine job it seems." You heard the stories in the news and even spotted him once or twice. Spiderman was always saving the day and getting things done. There really wasn't a reason for there to be two.
Miguel paused and shrugged a little. "He has a family...?"
You were not impressed by that answer.
"Okay I have a career." You rolled your eyes.
Miguel pinched the bridge of his nose. "Aye mira, I don't really...know, okay? But you got bitten and have powers, so there must be two in this world."
You glared at the man then turned away. "Okay yeah, so we're good here? Si? I have a service to prepare for. So great meeting you, but totally not down. Chau!"
Miguel watched you walked down the alley and knew that there wasn't much left to do for now. He had to think of another to convince you.
~~~
Beep! Beep! Beep!
You were starting to get annoyed. "Hey! If you don't turn that fucking watch off, I'm going to chuck at a wall!" You shoved a plate into the man's hands. "Take this out to table 42!"
Miguel stood there confused and slightly intimidated in a white long-sleeves button up, black slacks, and a black apron wrapped around his waist. His plan to infiltrate your workplace and bother you there was not necessarily working well. He glanced at his watch and saw there was a villain nearby, but then soon received a notification that PJ Parker was on his way. He sighed in relief.
"O'Hara! The food is getting fucking cold! Take it out!" you hollered.
"Yes, Chef!"
...
After a month and a half, Miguel's resolve was crumbling. He struggled to keep a balance between his actual job and this one at the restaurant. And he was only a food runner! There was always something to do, or fix, or replace, or someone who needed covering that he could literally get so caught up in service that he wouldn't even bother to check his watch (that was definitely on vibrate now). He didn't want to admit it to himself, but he could understand where you were coming from with your career and such.
There was no way you were going to dip out of service to go fight a villain without the kitchen going to shit.
He didn't want to meet your gaze.
"Uh-uh, repeat yourself." you looked smugly as you sipped your drink.
Miguel groaned internally before making eye contact. "I have no idea how you can be Spiderman."
You two sat in a dingy after-service dive bar after a not-as-busy Tuesday night. You told him to finally give you a break though you didn't mind the extra service hands or the eye candy that was always early to work. Miguel said it was dedication to being undercover, but you told him he had a knack for the industry.
You signaled for another round (on his tab of course) and chuckled. "Look, I don't know why I got bitten or how the hell I'm supposed to help people."
The man sighed and thought for a moment. "There's a great responsibility with it...at least promise me that when the right time comes, I can count on you to help."
You pondered for a moment before raising your glass. "Fine, cheers!"
Miguel chuckled before clinking his beer. "Ya know, I just might have at least something you can do, mija."
~~~
Miles was starving as he headed for the cafeteria in Nueva York. For some reason, Gwen told him to be quick, but of course, he got caught up in a couple things. He continued to walk down the hall when a few Spiders ran passed him and almost knocked him down.
"What the-," He turned the corner and was met with the cafeteria full of the Spider Society.
"Miles! I got you a plate!" he found the table where Gwen, Pavi, and the crew sat.
He squeezed in and looked around. "What's going on?"
Gwen shoved a spoon in his mouth. "Shut up and try this!"
Miles' eyes shot wide and he moaned in delicious delight. "Mmm, when did the cafeteria get this bomb ass food?"
"Miguel brought a new Spider along. Apparently, she's a chef!" Pavi answered before digging into his own plate.
"I had to fight off people to get you a plate." Gwen smiled.
Miles nodded as he shoveled more food in his mouth. "Is lunch always going to be this good?"
A new laugh got the crew's attention. "'Fraid not kiddo. I'll be here twice a month if it'll keep that sexy principe out of my restaurant." You teased.
"Hey! You said I did a good job!" Miguel turned and was shockingly in a better mood.
Miles scratched his cheek. "Aye, you gonna let her call you that?"
~~~
Miguel looked off to the side with a little pout "She can call me whatever she wants if she keeps bringing me empanadas."
This was so much fun! I got the idea because I was telling my aunt how Miles reminds me so much of my little brother. But if he was Spiderman, my sister and I would be his "guy in the chair." Though the problem is my little sister would be nonchalant while reading fanfiction while I'd be scrabbling around because I'm running dinner service--all on a three way call.
I wanted this to be a little spicier but the focus wasn't really on some smutty time, but more so a unique spiderperson. What did you think?
Thanks so much for reading!
Next DT (Duckverse) Fics
The short fics
News to Glory (Re-written)
Synopsis: A journalist visits Duckberg and meets an eccentric duck who will meet her and start a "friendship".
(The reason why it says re-written, because it went away from how it was going to develop after a while without continuing it and I noticed some incoherence in some aspects, that. I'm sorry, I noticed that almost nobody gave support, hopefully this one will help).
The date to your heart or friendship
Synopsis: Dickie plucks up the courage to take the step to ask Launchpad out with more personal intentions, however, obstacles will be… unexpected.
The Three Caballeros and One Dama
Synopsis: The story goes back to the twins' first years of adulthood, where the sailor will meet his future best friends and the pilot will get to know new conflicts.
(Warning: contains emotional problems, suggestive scenes, mild sexual scenes, alcohol and internal conflicts).
The new employee
Synopsis: Scrooge has doubts about Dickie's presence and plans to seek answers in a new expedition to a rather familiar place, The Klondike in the Yukon.
Women's evening
Synopsis: Daisy plans a girls' night out with Dickie, Mrs. Beakley, Della and Gloria. More as an excuse for Della to make more friends.
I have other more elaborated fic, but I don't want to reveal it yet because it touches on some more risqué topics and I'm not sure if I should publish the synopsis yet, but when I'm more prepared I might be, taking into account that there are people who are not ready yet.
