Thousands of protesters marched through central London (Saturday) afternoon as they demanded Carla Foster to be freed from jail, after her sentencing earlier this week reignited calls for abortion to be decriminalised.

Ms Foster was given a 28-month extended sentence on Monday after she admitted illegally procuring her own abortion during the pandemic when she was between 32 and 34 weeks pregnant.

Protesters marched from the Royal Courts of Justice to Whitehall today chanting “Free Carla Foster” and waving signs saying “abortion is healthcare”.

They called for an end to Victorian legislation that renders abortion a criminal act in England, Scotland and Wales, with women granted exemptions in certain circumstances up until 24 weeks of pregnancy.

There are seven exemptions that can be granted to allow a woman to have an abortion, but none stating that a woman simply does not want a baby. For 98 per cent of women who had an abortion last year, it was recorded as being “performed because of a risk to the woman’s mental health”, classified as “F99 (mental disorder, not otherwise specified)”.

Under current legislation, abortions can only take place after 24 weeks in specific circumstances including when the mother’s life is at risk or if the child will be severely disabled.

Labour MP Stella Creasy delivered a speech to protesters who gathered in Whitehall this afternoon, claiming that current abortion legislation is no longer “fit for purpose”.

“This week proves what some of us have been trying to tell, often at length, patiently, to middle-aged men on Twitter,” she said.

“We do not have a legal right to choose in England and Wales, and that has very real consequences.”

She later told i that the significant turnout to the march “shows women aren’t prepared to accept to the possibility of prosecution hanging over their right to choose”.

“Lawmakers who think they can ignore these concerns fail to understand how important protecting a womans right to choose is to so many,” she said. “Parliament has to act as with more prosecutions on the way this issue isn’t going away.”

Lucy Wing, a 21-year-old from Walthamstow in London who attended the march, said she was “outraged” at Ms Foster’s case.

“I am here because I do not believe that the law that Carla Foster was sentenced under was at all just,” she said.

“A legal understanding of what a person is does not encompass a foetus and it does not encompass a child that was born not breathing. That child does not have any human rights because it is not seen as a person.”

Ms Foster was jailed earlier this week after being found to have ended her pregnancy in May 2020 with “pills by post” that allowed women under 10 weeks pregnant to receive abortion medication during the first Covid lockdown, when access to health services ground to a halt.

The “pills by post” scheme, which was intended to be a temporary measure ushered in during the pandemic, has now been introduced permanently.

Ms Foster, a mother-of-three, pleaded guilty to administering drugs to procure abortion significantly beyond the 10-week time limit, contrary to the 1861 Offences Against the Person Act. The offence carried a maximum life sentence.

The judge, Mr Justice Pepperall, had received a letter from medical bodies including the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and the Royal College of Midwives urging him to pass a non-custodial sentence.

However, he said this was “inappropriate” and sentenced the woman on the basis of the law as it stands.

The case has reignited calls to decriminalise abortion in the UK, with charities launching a fresh campaign to reform “outdated” laws that allow woman to face life imprisonment for ending their own pregnancies. 

Ed Dorman, 64, an obstetrician and gynaecologist who also attended the march, said that Ms Foster’s case had “galvanised” the abortion movement and drawn attention to the punity of current laws. 

“As you can tell from today, it has galvanised a lot of very strong feeling about the inappropriateness of the way the law, if it’s applied, can result in somebody being sent to prison for ending their own pregnancy,” he said. 

“I would like to see, as in Northern Ireland, the whole remit of abortion care being taken out of the criminal law and, whilst still regulated, be like any other part of healthcare.”

Abortion was decriminalised in Northern Ireland in October 2019 after Westminster passed laws while the government at Stormont had collapsed.

However, abortion is still technically illegal in the rest of the UK as legislation brought into force in 1861 has not yet been repealed.

No 10 said earlier this week that the Government has no plans to alter abortion laws despite outrage over Ms Foster’s sentencing. 

The Prime Minister’s official spokesman said on Tuesday: “Through the Abortion Act, all women have access to safe abortions on the NHS up to 24 weeks and we have made changes so that now includes taking abortion pills at home.

“We think this approach provides the right balance and … there are no plans to change this.”

The spokesman added: “We recognise that this is a highly emotive issue and obviously we recognise that the strength of feeling on all sides.”

Crimes That Shook Britain (North East)

John Darwin In March 2002, John Darwin, 51, paddled out to sea in his canoe near his Hartlepool home. He never returned Coastguard rescue teams and police searched for him, but all they found was Darwin's paddle.

Several weeks later, the wreckage of his canoe washed up on a beach. With no body found by April 2003, John Darwin was declared dead. His widow Anne and their two sons grieved. Until December 2007 - when Darwin walked into a police station, claiming to have amnesia.

John Darwin was reunited with his sons and Anne, who'd moved to Panama, was delighted. Only, a pjoto emerged of Anne and John in Panama, together in 2006. The couple had actually faked John's death to claim his £250,000 life insurance.

Both Darwins were jailed for over six years - him for obtaining cash by deception, her for deception and money laundering.

Michael Atherton New Year's Day 2012 - taxi driver Michael Atherton, 42, shot dead his partner Susan McGoldrick, 47, her sister Alison Turnbull, 44, and niece Tanya Turnbull, 24, at his home in Peterlee. He then turned the gun on himself.

His stepdaughter survived after fleeing via a window. It emerged Atherton had a history of domestic violence. He blamed Alison for his arrest in 2008, after a row. When he discovered Susan had gone out with her sister that night, he said there'd be trouble if he saw Alison at his home. He said he'd stay in a hotel.

Yet the women arrived home before he'd left. A row erupted and Atherton got his gun from the car.

Mary Bell On 25 May 1968, the day before her 11th birthday, Mary Bell strangled Martin Brown, 4. His body was found in a derelict house in Newcastle.

Two months later, Mary enlisted a 13-year-old friend to help strangle Brian Howe, 3. His mutilated body was found on waste ground. When detectives questioned local children, Mary and her friend acted strangely, their stories changing. Officers soon realised Mary was a killer.

The friend was acquitted and gave evidence against Mary. The court heard Mary committed the crimes 'for the pleasure and excitement of killing'. Mary Bell was convicted of manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility. She was sentenced to life in detention, released aged 23, and given a new identity.

Raoul Moat Two days after being released from prison on 3 July 2010, Raoul Moat, 37, from Newcastle, went on the rampage with a sawn-off shotgun.

First he shot his ex Samantha Stobbart and her new partner Chris Brown. While on the run in Rothbury, Moat shot police officer David Rathboand in the face. Brown was killed, Stobbart injured and PC Rathboand blinded.

Police deployed armed officers in one of Britain's biggest manhunts. In a letter left with a friend, Moat declared war on officers, saying that he wouldn't stop 'until I am dead'. On 9 July, police tracked Moat to the river Coquet, leading to a stand-off. Police negotiated, but Moat shot himself the next morning.

Sadly, David Rathboand later took his own life.

Billy Dunlop - Double Jeopardy Pizza delivery girl Julie Hogg, 22, disappeared in November 1989. Eighty days later, her mother Ann found her decomposing, partially mutilated body behind a bath panel in Ann's Billingham home.

Julie's ex Billy Dunlop was charged with murder, yet juries at two trials failed to reach a verdict. He was cleared. The double jeopardy law (which meant Dunlop could not be tried again) meant he thought he'd got away with murder for 17 years.

Ann fought for double jeopardy laws to be scrapped and, in 2003. MPs backed changes allowing serious cases with compelling new evidence to be reopened. Dunlop pleaded guilty to murder in 2006, was jailed for life.

Gary Vinter = Freed to Kill Again Gary Vinter killed colleague Carl Edon, 22, in a railway workers' cabin in 1995. Vinter stabbed him 37 times, puncturing every organ. He was jailed for life, but released in 2006, after serving 10 years.

In July 2006, he married Anne White. But Vinter was recalled to prison after a New Year pub brawl. Released again in early 2008, he separated from Anne after attacking her at their home in Eston, Middlesbrough. That February, Vinter bundled his estranged wife into a car.

After holding her hostage at his mother's house, he stabbed Anne to death. He was jailed for life. In 2011, Vinter attacked Roy Whiting - killer of schoolgirl Sarah Payne - in jail.

In 2016, he received a third life sentence for trying to murder fellow 'life' Lee Newell behind bars.

The Tap End is a 1988 episode of Thames Television's Rumpole of the Bailey, written by John Mortimer, which tackles the issue of community and judicial attitudes to domestic violence against women.

Horace Rumpole (Leo McKern) is called in to defend a member of the Timson family of petty criminals, his regular clients, on a charge of attempted murder. Tony Timson (Phil Davis) has allegedly tried to drown his wife during their bath together, over ‘slurs on his virility’. He also explains that, at his wife’s behest, he always sits at the uncomfortable ‘tap end’ of the bath.

The matter is brought before Mr Justice Featherstone (Peter Bowles) who is anxious to avoid a trial and wrap up proceedings quickly so as not to interfere with an invitation to the Royal Garden Party. In a pre-trial meeting with counsel, the judge is keen to have the charges downgraded and the matter resolved by lunchtime. Assisting Rumpole is the feminist barrister, Liz Probert (in earlier series played by Samantha Bond but now by Leo McKern’s daughter, Abigail), and she can already see which way the wind is blowing.

The charges are duly downgraded from attempted murder to common assault, to Rumpole’s satisfaction and Liz Probert’s outrage. Timson is freed on a good behaviour bond, with Justice Featherstone summing up that being forced to sit at the uncomfortable tap end of the bath is at least a partial justification for the defendant’s actions.

Liz Probert is incandescent with rage, and mobilises her women’s action group against the judge, who is lambasted in the press, not at all popular with Marigold, Lady Featherstone, and besieged by protestors.

Mrs Rumpole (She who must be obeyed) is outraged to the point that she decides to study law to defend women’s rights, and in a subsequent hearing, Featherstone tries to have the court records 'corrected' to change the nuance of his comments, but actually makes things worse by accidentally reinforcing the fact that, in his judgement, sitting at the tap end is a justifiable defence against a charge of attempted murder in a domestic situation. He is hauled before the Lord Chancellor for a disciplinary hearing, and his career hangs in the balance.

When Timson is framed for an armed robbery, it becomes apparent that the initial allegations against him were false and motivated by a love triangle involving his wife and Peanuts Molloy, from a rival and infinitely more violent crime firm. Justice Featherstone publicly redeems himself by getting to the truth.

The generally dismissive attitude by some of the male protagonists over incidences of domestic violence is an interesting theme tackled by John Mortimer, who also manages to sustain the episode's comedic aspects with Featherstone's clumsy and increasingly desperate attempts at trying to demonstrate what a strong supporter and defender of women he really is, and how he had been the victim of a terrible misunderstanding.

Rumpole himself had some unhappy form on these kinds of cases. In a very early and much darker episode, John Mortimer had Rumpole angrily confronted by his daughter-in-law over his delight at being engaged for a rape trial in which the defendant was an MP, and for his brutal and relentless cross-examination of the increasingly distressed, confused and vulnerable victim.

So who caved first, Truss or the lettuce?

The only political thing I will ever say on this blog is this:

For a short time in the early 1980′s, Liz Truss went to a Primary School in Paisley, Scotland and one Halloween she went dressed as Margaret Thatcher. Now this would have been during the time of the miners strikes and the Falklands war. What I’m getting at here is that she’s lucky to be alive after showing up to a school in Paisley as the devil incarnate, Thatcher was not well liked all over the UK as a whole but she was absolutely despised in Scotland. She shut down the shipbuilding industry here making our country practically a ghost town and we were her guinea pigs for the poll tax when it was first introduced. She hated us just as much as we grew to hate her. Also Scotland hasn’t voted Tory since 1955 and the rest of the world, including England (sorry but it’s true), wonder why Scotland wants independence? 

You may say, but you had a referendum in 2014, you voted no. Most of the people who voted no did so under false pretences, they were lied to like Boris lied about the hundreds of millions that would go into the NHS on his blunder bus during Brexit. Others, like the elderly, thanks to a lot of scaremongering, feared for their pensions. We were told that if we voted yes we would be forced out of the European Union and the only way to remain was to vote no. In 2016 62% of Scots voted remain in the Brexit referendum, we wanted to stay but because we are “part of the UK” our votes counted for nothing and we were forced out of the EU. You may also say, but the independence referendum was a once in a lifetime thing, you had your chance and you said no, well it was but wouldn’t you say all bets are off when we are not given what we were promised? When we vote for one thing and get another? Plus our then Scottish First Minister was the one who signed a document stating that he would never call for another referendum should we vote no, hence once in a lifetime, so he resigned. Our current First Minister, who is calling for a second referendum, signed no such thing. She was elected to power by the Scottish people under this promise: “The SNP Government was elected in an explicit manifesto pledge that the Scottish Parliament should have the right to consider an independence referendum if Scotland is faced with the threat of being dragged out of the EU against its will.” Now the Westminster government are telling her no, that now is not the time. They’ve been telling her this since Theresa May was Prime Minister. Now the current shambles of a Prime Minister says the only way to deal with our First Minister is to ignore her. Ignore a leader that was elected into the position she has today by the people of her country, unlike Liz Truss who was chosen as the lesser of two evils by Tory party members!

So to those now grown up kids who were in Thick Lizzie’s class, I say this: Well done on your strong will powers, it might have taken forty years but you may just have freed your country with that one act of self reserve! We’re about to have a third Prime Minister in one year, she’s gone and fucking resigned! Is it any wonder that Scotland wants out?

I will also say this, Scotland is not anti English, this is not an attack on England and it never was. Scotland is anti Westminster, a government that we never voted for telling us what we can and cannot do. Sneering and laughing at us and treating us like something on the bottom of their shoe. Anyone who watches what goes on in the Commons can see how our SNP MPs are treated with contempt every time they stand up and open their mouths, the Tories don’t even bother to hide it, we’re nobodies...but they sure do love draining us dry of the plentiful resources we provide, but that is another story. Because of my stance on this subject I’ve been constantly shouted at, unionists cannot have a calm conversation with you, all they can do is shout and be aggressive, I’ve had the words nationalist scum spat in my face many times, and my best friend has literally been physically spat on when she was in England during the indy ref and someone heard her Scottish accent, that was her crime, her accent. She was passing that person in the street talking on her phone and he just gobbed on her out of nowhere! I leave you with the wise words of the amazing Scottish actor, Peter Mullan, who sums up the feelings of the majority. Sorry for this rant, but I’m sure a lot of people don’t know much of this, they just see us as English hating scrounging jocks which we are not! We gave you the television, the telephone, penicillin and many other wonderful things. A man in Skelmorlie on the west coast of Scotland invented the Vanish line with soap! We’re not stupid, we’re not English hating yobs, we’re just tired and we want fairness! Something we will never get under Westminster rule!

Yes, I remember you letting other fans believe what they believe, siccing your faithful dogs on them, as well as spreading nasty rumors about them here. Yes, I've been a longtime Gillovny fan (a very long time), probably almost from the moment I became a fan of David and the X-Files. ( and I was 11 at the time, the only thing I didn't know was that the name of it all was Gillovny) then it was all fueled from 2013 onwards by misinformation from people like you. But in the end, it was as if a veil had fallen from me and I had an epiphany. I realized that there are a bunch of inconsistencies in all of this, and that most of the information is complete nonsense, and to say nothing of the fact that Gillian's kids are growing up and they don't look a bit like David. It was enough to apply critical thinking and realize that I'm really just a fan of David and I'm willing to accept him for who he is and respect his choices. All that matters to me is that he's happy and I don't care who's around him. All I see is that Monique is a positive influence on him and that he's happy with her. How happy he was at the premiere and how he practically wouldn't let her hand out of his hand if she was around. She must have been nervous, but she did great thanks to his support. It's really cute 🥰 they really looked harmonious, unless you count Gillovny’s fans and haters , people positively welcomed them as a couple. Regarding my life (she's giving you a hard time. For some reason I'm not interested in what your life is like, if you've believed in this conspiracy nonsense for 30 years in a row in order to hide the relationship between two actors) I can tell you that you have no idea (and god forbid you ever experience this personally) what it's like to live in a country with a Nazi regime. When per 10 people there are 8-9 people who hate and wish death to the whole world and especially to people in the neighboring country, (including even small children) just because everyone allegedly wants to conquer the "great nation of Russians". My whole life today is divided into before and after. Of course, I freed up a lot of time because I stopped communicating with my family and friends, because in their opinion, if I do not support the Nazi regime, I am a traitor to my country. Do I regret it? No. Do I understand that they will have an epiphany when the criminal regime ends? Yes, I understand. Will I forgive them? I do not know. It's my conscious choice, and I'm not the only one. All this free time I and others like me "traitors" spend fighting and resisting, risking imprisonment for it. If you want to feel sorry for me, feel sorry for me, but there's really nothing to feel sorry for. Just be glad that your life is not like ours in the country and not like the people now in Ukraine.

What I see is that you are absolutely filled with resentment and hatred towards your country and family and have decided to take it out on me, maybe because I'm an easier target. You are letting said resentment fill your heart and blind your senses. I really don't care what you believe or feel towards D, MP or any celebs a fig. I wish you would give others the same choice but your are one bitter person clouded by the feelings I mentioned before. If you were critical and rational you would let people feel and think as they wish.

Unit Teambuilding - Shauna

We got wind of this quite a while ago now, but turns out Shauna is real.  And she got Chesnaught, as is just and proper.  Now let’s see if they did Chesnaught right.

General Overview They did.  They did a good job.

Chesnaught is a support, which is nice.  Moreover, Chesnaught is an atk/crit buffer that can cap at 1/5.  MP Burst means she recovers 1MP of her moves on first sync.  This is huge, but comes with the drawback of her needing to take first sync.  Which...support.  She should.  It also means freed up energy, SS Kris style.  Shauna’s starting off strong.  Mini Potion All is fine, Vine Whip is a nice 1-bar spam, and Spiky Shield is a neat Piers-esque shield that damages foes, and with her passives, buffs all allies’ defensive stats by 1, and charges gauges by 3.  It’s also an attack, with unspecified damage numbers but hey.  We’ll see.

What’s limiting about Shauna is that she’s fairly slow, and doesn’t cap offenses until after first sync, which can be a problem.  Being Psychic-weak is a pretty painful weakness as well, given Gauntlet’s love of Psychic types for more difficult matches.  But hey, Shauna’s solid, and a very, very welcome addition to the general pool.

EX and Move Level? Supports are the most consistently good ideas for EX.  They’re almost always your frontline tank, so the stats are essential, and the double sync buff is magnificent in every game mode.  I can’t say Shauna is a bad pick for this, given her strong defensive profile and outright need for first sync.  As for move level, Shauna...is unusual for a general pool.  She can get away with 1/5.  Unbending is a nice tool against something like Cobalion or Azelf, preventing the defense debuff.  2/5 gets Attack Trap on Vine Whip, which can inflict the coveted Trap condition on an opponent, which is downright essential for Cresselia Phase 1 and Uxie’s later phases, though her Psychic weakness hinders overall effectiveness.  And 3/5, she gets built-in Vigilance.  And Endurance.  Which is like...the holy grail of passive effects on a support.  I’m a fan.

Team 1: Shauna, Dawn, Masked Royal In the interest of avoiding “Shauna is Hop but with some different tools” and having a billion teambuilding considerations, let’s start with some things she can do fairly specific.  Dawn, despite being support, has some good damage and a solid sync nuke with Pecking Order.  Shauna can cap her attack and crit, while Masked Royal can cap team speed and debuff the needed attack and defense.  What’s unique to Shauna is theme skill matching to Dawn for a ton of extra HP.

Team 2: Shauna, Mallow, Nanu/Kukui Mallow is another big recipient of Shauna’s buffs while having theme skills.  Nanu and Kukui debuff the needed defense.

Team 3: Shauna, Grimsley, Barry Experimental, will test.  But Anti-Cresselia.  Grimsley needs Shauna’s offensive buffs, and Shauna has one particular skill that seriously alters the game: Trap on Vine Whip.  Trap completely shreds Cresselia’s phase 1, getting you through the buffing quickly and efficiently.  Barry has Full Heal to remove the paralysis that spreads.  Remove it from Grimsley and Barry, but not Shauna, in order to block the later Toxic effect.  They’ll still be fast enough to handle it, and once you’re out of Bar 1, special moves can deal real damage.  I imagine this is super reliant on Shauna being able to MPR her Spiky Shield.  Because Psychic-weak.

Team 4: Shauna, N, Volkner/SST Red if you must Full disclosure: I was looking for a 4-bar spam unit to pair her with and bring up that Shauna needing to take first sync means DPS units are her best friends, and came up with N, best known for sync nuke exploding stages and having a 5/5 grid with perfect self-sufficiency anyway.  It was this or NY!Lisia.  I feel like most 4-bar spam units are...pretty self-sufficient.  Also mostly special.  I blame Hyper Beam.

Team 5: Shauna, C!Iris, C!Elesa/Masked Royal So let’s take a look at the other side of the coin: if Shauna’s role is to top off, and her intended partner doesn’t need full support, then she doesn’t need to take first sync.  C!Iris is a great example, being able to give herself +2 attack and +1 crit, perfectly complementing Shauna without the need for extra MP.  C!Elesa remains the ideal C!Iris partner with the spectrum debuffs, though Masked Royal gets speed buffs for better DPS between sync.  I will note though, C!Iris and C!Elesa have -1 sync cooldown on their trainer moves.  And Shauna has built-in Vigilance.  She could run Head Start 1 and get early first sync with this comp.

Do note that the general structure of this works for any unit with at least some ability to self-buff attack or crit.  Gordie, Courtney, Lodge Silver, and Nessa to name a few who now only need 1MP, or units like Lodge Serena, BP Sophocles, or Bruno who can buff them separately but still need the help.

If going the Head Start route, partners with -2 cooldown are solid picks, though not always playing optimally.  For instance, Dojo Gloria gets -2 cooldown, but doesn’t need Shauna’s buffs.  Same with Lysandre.  What she can do, though, is make a decent partner to Anni Raihan, who can fill in as Propulsion Sandstorm support while she buffs the third ally handling most of the damage.  Her trainer move also tops off Raihan’s crit, and he buffs up enough special attack to do okay as supplemental DPS.

Final Thoughts I’m sorry, I know I usually have more, but Shauna’s pretty much...Hop.  Sonia.  Aaron.  You know, those ones.  While Spiky Shield is interesting, I’d really need to see what it does in damage before considering it of any utility.  2-turn moves slow down access to sync, they’re usually ill-advised.  Shauna at least blocks damage, but type-reliant damage is far less valuable than, say, Piers’ -2 defense debuff.  And to be honest, Shauna is far worse off than Sonia, who got so many tools it’s ridiculous, and isn’t quite as versatile as Aaron either.  But I will argue she’s better off than Hop.  Her main draw over them is the combination of Vigilance and Endurance on grid, and the lack of any MPR concerns.  But her weakness is that she doesn’t have quite the utility of Aaron or Sonia, and is hard required to take first sync, meaning in CS she operates best with DPS allies instead of sync-based damage.  And her trap condition on Vine Whip is nice, but it’s far too inconsistent, and is primarily useful for Psychic-type stages, which she’s weak to.  It’s a situation where Shauna feels designed to have good tools, and then counterbalanced a little too hard.  We’ll see how she shakes out though.

Britain's Bold Moves in Global Climate Change Solutions

Statement by Minister Andrew Mitchell at the UN Financing for Development High-level Dialogue.

Excellencies, Our Prime Minister, at the G20, announced that Britain will provide 2 billion dollars for the Green Climate Fund - the biggest single commitment the UK has made to help the world tackle climate change. And Britain continues to want bigger, better Multilateral Development Banks. The UK supports, in due course, a conditional capital increase for the IBRD. We have provided more than 4.5 million pounds of guarantees to enable the Multilateral Development Banks to lend more money. We are also extremely focused on sweating these Banks’ balance sheets. We have already seen an additional 200 billion dollars produced, and we want to see much more. In addition, Britain is very focused on the issues of debt. At the Summit in Paris, Britain announced Climate Resilient Debt Clauses, which we are now using, which means that countries faced with a pandemic or natural disaster have their liquidity freed up to help their citizens, rather than having to pay off capital and interest. We also want to see the G20 Common Framework used much better to help countries that need debt rescheduling. We have seen what happened recently in Zambia and Ghana and we know that that is not good enough. Our Prime Minister has also made clear that we will stand by our commitment to provide 11.6 billion pounds of international climate finance before the end of 2025/26 and play our part in the 100 billion promise that has been made. And we have recently announced that we will spend 500 million pounds on forestry programs because we know the important role they play in tackling climate change. In November, we will have a summit in London on the issues of malnutrition, food insecurity, and starvation, which I think will also make a very significant contribution. The final point I want to make is about the critical importance of all these different state funding mechanisms being able to link umbilically with the private sector, and in particular with the 60 trillion dollars we know is there of pension fund money. Many of the people who manage pension funds would want to see, subject to the necessary safeguards, this money being used as part of the common fight across the planet on tackling climate change. So, we think harnessing the role of the private sector is absolutely crucial. We hope to help explain in a government white paper from Britain later this year the future of international development. Just as BII – the British government’s development finance institution – is playing such an important role already, investing to support the delivery of the SDGs. As we look ahead to the Annual Meetings and COP28, let’s seize this moment to increase ambition, galvanize action, and find new ways to deliver a bigger, better, fairer international financial system. A woman in the Tudor History group I'm a member of recently recommended to me what sounded like a very readable book about Catherine Parr, the wife who survived Henry VIII, written by an academic called Dr Elizabeth Norton. I name-checked her only yesterday when posting about the Elfrida book, not realising they were the same author. Turns out she's written several books about queens (link here). I will keep an eye out for her work in charity shop finds and, as she is also a broadcaster, also on TV documentaries. Nice one!

Will have a more in-depth look at the link later and add info re. each book to the 'queens an' tings' blog in more detail.

And talking of Tudor women, I've finally been getting to grips with a few Tudor men (not as exciting as that might sound!). Essentially, working out who's who in the Seymour and Dudley families.

Seymour - the queen Jane Seymour had three brothers:

Edward, 1st Earl of Somerset, a biography about whom I mentioned in a recent post, who became Lord Protector of England during the minority of his nephew Edward VI, who was eventually executed after being accused of treason by John Dudley, Duke of Northumberland.

Thomas, 1st Baron Seymour of Sudeley, who was also executed for treason (and suspected of engaging in sexual relations with Elizabeth I when she was 14 and while she has married to Henry VIII's surviving wife, Catherine Parr).

Sir Henry Seymour - he was actually the second surviving son but I've placed him after Thomas on the list as he led a generally quiet life (although he was an MP at one point) living to a good age in relative obscurity.

The Seymour family lived at a large manor house called Wulfhall or Wolfhall, which was the inspiration for Hilary Mantel's prize-winning masterpiece, 'Wolf Hall'.

Dudley - the father-in-law, husband and brother-in-law of Lady Jane Grey.

John Dudley, 1st Duke of Northumberland. Married his son off to Lady Jane in the hopes of ruling by proxy via the young couple. Executed for high treason when Mary I took the throne. Had several children - so far I've only read about the following two.

Lord Guildford Dudley, husband of the young Jane - I need to read up more about him, I think he was only a year older than her and perhaps also a pawn in his father's plans?? He was too executed for high treason.

Robert Dudley, 1st Earl of Leicester - he was older than Guildford and a favourite courtier of Elizabeth I, also sentenced to death for treason, but freed. I will read more about him later. I think he hoped to marry Elizabeth, but married someone else who later died in suspicious circumstances (was he accused of pushing her down a flight of stairs??) I think at one point Elizabeth suggested he marry Mary, Queen of Scots and they all live together - that way Elizabeth could maintain her unmarried status and therefore ensure her sole power, while keeping tighter reins on Mary by controlling her choice of partner, plus stay in close proximity to her favourite man - however, the plan came to nothing. He married many years later to a lady called Lettice Knollys, much to Elizabeth's displeasure. She is one of the subjects of my 'queens an' tings' project I will address in more detail later. [Her son, Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex, became another favourite of Elizabeth's later in life, but he was involved in a plot to try to oust her from the throne, for which he was executed by beheading in 1601].

The painting on the front of the book is 'The Cholmondeley Ladies', painted by an unknown artist circa 1600–10. Perhaps a strange choice as a cover seeing as Elizabeth died in 1603 and the throne was brought under the rule of the House of Stuart?

Ex MP Behind IAS Officer's Murder To Be Freed As Bihar Tweaks Prison Rules

Among those who will be released is former MP Anand Mohan Singh who was convicted in the 1994 murder of then Gopalganj District Magistrate G Krishnaiah.

New Delhi/Patna: The Bihar government today notified the release of 27 prisoners, days after amending the Bihar Prison Manual that triggered a massive opposition backlash. Among those who will be released is former MP Anand Mohan Singh who was convicted in the 1994 murder of bureaucrat G Krishnaiah.

G Krishnaiah, then Gopalganj District Magistrate, was killed by a mob allegedly provoked by Anand Mohan Singh. The gangster-turned-politician was sentenced to death in 2007 by a lower court in Bihar. The Patna High Court, however, commuted it to life imprisonment; that order was upheld by the Supreme Court in 2012.

Earlier this month, the Bihar government had removed the clause which had forbidden the remission of jail term for those convicted of murdering a public servant on duty.

In its notification, the state’s law department said that the new rules were for prisoners who have served the actual sentence of 14 years or a sentence of 20 years with remission.

“In light of the Bihar state sentence remission council meeting on April 20, the decision was taken for the release of prisoners having served actual sentence of 14 years or sentence of 20 years with remission,” the notification said.

The change in rules and Anand Mohan Singh’s release has stirred up huge controversy, with Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) terming the change in rules as “anti-Dalit”.

“The move by the Nitish government to prepare the release of Anand Mohan after changing rules in the case of the brutal murder of extremely honest IAS officer G Krishnaiah, who belonged to a poor Dalit family from Andhra Pradesh’s Mehboobnagar (now in Telangana), is being discussed for negative and anti-Dalit reasons in the whole country,” Ms Mayawati tweeted on Sunday.

She asked the Nitish Kumar government to reconsider the decision, saying that Anand Mohan Singh’s release would anger the Dalit community.

BJP’s IT Cell head Amit Malviya also hit out at Nitish Kumar. “Can someone who is leaning on a criminal syndicate, to hold on to power, be the face of India, even as opposition leader?” Mr Malviya tweeted on Monday.

The ruling Janata Dal (United) hit back at the BJP, with a “B-team in UP” jibe also at Mayawati. In a tweet, JDU leader Rajiv Ranjan Singh said that the change in rules was aimed at getting the common man and special prisoners on a uniform platform.

The change in the Bihar prison manual benefits Anand Mohan Singh, a Rajput leader with considerable influence on his caste voters.

For the last two years, several politicians from the Rajput community have been demanding Singh’s early release. Even Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has on multiple occasions hinted that he “stands by his former colleague”.
