Hi there, I know this is going to vary for everyone but I’m wondering if you had any tips for self studying a language/how to start a language journal? Or just effective notes in general? Starting in August I will be a German major in university, but I’ve honestly never actively studied before. In high school I was naturally a good student. I’m trying my best to start studying but everything feels extremely overwhelming and I haven’t been able to start before my anxiety psychs me out.

1. have separate notebooks for grammar points and vocabulary1.1 grammar notebook: for grammar notebook, i write down some brief explanations for each grammar point, english equivalents, and some examples that are easy to memorise and recall.1.2 vocabulary notebook: for vocabulary notebook, i just list down the words along with their definitions. but in case the word is hard to memorise or i’m not sure of how to use it in a sentence, i’ll find some examples on the internet and write them down. i also write down its synonyms to make it more convenient to find similar groups of words in the same place. (i personally recommend that you focus more on vocabulary part at first. like, if you don’t know the grammar, you can still understand a brief meaning of the sentence by knowing the vocabulary. but after you learn quite a bit of vocabulary, you can focus more on grammar points.)

*here’s a tip: when writing a synonym/an example/pronunciation of each word, instead of using a normal black pen, i often use other colour to make it more distinguishable and stands out from the words and definitions.*

2. immerse yourself in the language: now this is what i include in most of my language post, but trust me, immersion is the key. apparently, english is not my native language. 2 years ago, i used to be just ‘kind of good’ at english and far from reaching the state of being fluent. and although we study english at school, i’m positive that 80% of the knowledge i currently have comes from my self-study session and immersion method within this couple of years.

songs: you can try listening to german songs when you’re relaxing, going to a lecture, or even when you’re studying german.

books: just to challenge yourself a bit, you can order a children book from amazon to try and read, maybe look up some german passages to read and see how much you can understand, or even read webtoon in german.

youtube videos: youtube is literally a life-saver. there are so many youtubers out there who often post videos about german. and if you want to familiarise yourself with the language more or to challenge yourself, try finding some german youtubers to watch!

phone language: change your phone language into german! if you’re using ios, also change siri into german! now you’ll get to see and read german every single time you pick up your phone. and if you want to practise your speaking skill but feel weird talking to yourself, just talk to siri in german. 

3. language journal: my language journal is pretty messy though, like, everything is literally all over the place lol. in my opinion, there’s nothing much about keeping a language journal. my only tip is to write down whatever you want. you don’t have to care if it’s grammatically correct or not. and i reckon this might help you with some topic ideas.

4. how to start?: for german or any languages that have a proficiency test, i’d totally suggest that you stick with its course. for example, if i know my chinese knowledge is around hsk2-3, i’ll research on minimum knowledge to reach the level and start to self-study from that on. by doing this, you won’t be wasting so much time on studying from the very basic which you might have mastered already. and you can try taking some placement tests on these websites [1] [2]

have you checked to see if your school is an isep partner? You’d be surprised. I plan on majoring in German at my school in august but I can go study abroad in countries all over. Italy, Brazil, China, you name it. ISEP usually has programs for everyone.

omg that's so cool!!!! :) nah I don't think my uni is, and even if it was my degree doesn't offer exchanges overseas anyway I don't think :/ but I guess we do placements later on and we can go overseas then so that's something!!!
