EA FC 24 : Les budgets des clubs de Ligue 1 et Ligue 2 dévoilés !

Cette année, en Ligue 1, les écarts sont saisissants. En cumulant tous les budgets de Ligue 1, on atteint la somme impressionnante de 680,84 millions d'euros, soit une moyenne de plus de 37 millions d'euros par club. Ce qui est encore plus surprenant, c'est que le budget du Havre est inférieur à celui de quatre clubs de Ligue 2. L'Olympique Lyonnais, malgré les restrictions imposées par la DNCG, parvient à se hisser à la deuxième place avec un budget conséquent. Quant à l'Olympique de Marseille et au Stade Rennais, ils disposent respectivement de 49,26 millions d'euros et 32,2 millions d'euros. L'AS Saint-Étienne se démarque avec le budget le plus élevé de la Ligue 2, s'élevant à 10,42 millions d'euros. C'est d'ailleurs plus que celui du Havre en Ligue 1 ! D'autres clubs, tels que Bordeaux, Angers et l'ESTAC , surpassent également le budget du club normand. NBA 2K24’s soundtrack celebrates 50th anniversary of hip-hop

The motivation for the soundtrack this time around is focused on integrating genre-defining songs from the past and present, as well as highlighting rising works from the next generation of artists, in recognition of the 50th anniversary of hip-hop and the 25th anniversary of the NBA 2K franchise. While the official track list for the NBA 2K24 soundtrack has yet to be revealed in full at the time of writing, 2K did unveil a handful of artists and songs that players can expect to be featured in the game this year. Monaco: Complete Edition for the Nintendo Switch is OUT NOW! Head to the eShop and download it!

A little background on why this may be the perfect platform for the game:

I originally conceived of Monaco as a console game way back in October of 2009. It was written in XNA, and at first it was a very small project that I intended to release on the Xbox 360's indie game store, where self-publishing was allowed. Here's what it looked like back then:

Surprising everyone, Monaco won the Grand Prize in the 2010 Independent Games Festival when it was just 15 weeks into development. I decided that the indie game store on XBLA was too small-fry for an IGF-winning game, but you needed to have a publisher to bring the game to the main XBLA storefront. So I brought it to Microsoft for a publishing deal where it was promptly rejected, saying that the visuals were offputting. So I went back into a work-hole for 6 months to improve the visuals and this is where I ended up:

I brought it back to Microsoft again and was rejected again. Not one to be defeated, I engaged my friends over at Empty Clip Studios to port the game to their in-house engine so I could bring the game to the PS3 instead. Sony, to their credit, was interested. I had the contract sitting on my desk, ready to sign, on the day of the infamous hack of PSN. PSN went down for a week, and it was my impression at the time that their audience never really recovered. So I decided to go look for a third party publisher to help me get the game onto the Xbox after all. This is when Majesco approached us while demoing the game at PAX. They would publish the game on the Xbox 360 while I would retain publishing rights on PC/Mac/Linux.

But the game development gods had more surprises in store for us. Two days before our launch day I started getting reports from reviewers that online games on the Xbox were disconnecting almost immediately. With the help of Microsoft engineers, we discovered that packet size limitations were different on their development network than on their live production network. I was forced to delay our XBox launch until the issue was fixed.

On April 24th, 2013, the game came out on Steam. We got incredible reviews from all the major publications. We had great sales numbers. But the game didn't come out on the Xbox until April 27th. The Xbox missed the launch hype. And like with many online games, if your community numbers falter, the community dies entirely. The PC version sold around 1.7 million copies. The console version... far less.

Despite all the effort undertaken to get the game onto a console, despite the couch being the perfect place to play the game, Monaco on XBLA had flopped.

While I dreamed of bringing it to a handheld system in subsequent years, in particular the PS Vita, my experience with Xbox made me gunshy about spending the time and money. But the community of players around the Steam version continued to grow, with some players into the thousands of hours in the game.

And so, when the Switch was announced, it seemed like the perfect second chance for a console platform. Nintendo is known for their couch multiplayer games, the portability of the system is a dream, and our audience is hungry for another trip to Monaco. Sickhead Games, the guys responsible for the PS4 port of Tooth and Tail, helped us port it. And now it's out.

Monaco: Complete Edition (Nintendo Switch)

Developed/Published by: Pocketwatch Games Released: 21/10/2020 Completed: 26/07/2020 Completion: Finished it… well the first two campaigns. I mean that’s when you see the credits so I felt like it was time to move on! Did it all in single-life runs too. Trophies / Achievements: n/a

Right, so, I’ve made it clear that I think Switch is a nice platform for indie titles--it just feels really… right? But man, if there’s something I wish that Nintendo had foreseen is their decision to split the hardware format with the Lite, because there are a lot of games on the system that when you really get down to it are intended for couch play but you can’t because you’ve got a Lite. Like Party Treats, which is just totally worthless without it.

I suppose the difference here is Monaco is actually quite worthwhile either way, it’s just that it’d have been nice if maybe Nintendo had made it extremely easy for developers to do local multi-system play w/ demo downloads for the people who don’t own it. Incentivised it, even. I mean right now I don’t even know which games you can do it with! There’s no clear online list! It means if you buy something with local multiplayer it might be single system and there’s really no way to know [“this really has nothing to do with Monaco by now…”--Ed.] Yeah, you’re right.

Anyway, I’ve wanted to play this basically forever (since 2010, when it won the grand prize at the IGF! I’m so old!!!) and as *right* as the Switch feels I definitely do kind of wish I’d been able to play this on a system where I could more easily engage in local play, because I think it’s obvious that this game is probably ten times as fun in multiplayer. In single player, it’s a fairly thoughtful (sometimes manic) stealth action title that sort-of lacks quality-of-life improvements you’d expect from a modern stealth game (though you actually get some of them in multiplayer when you’re playing more than one character at a time, which is probably the point). The standout aspect is the field-of-view system that always feels a little punishing. It’s also really weirdly hard to grasp at first... but when you get it, it’s kind of beautiful.

In fact, to be honest, the entire game is a bit hard to grasp in single player until you work out (spoilers) that once you’ve unlocked “The Gentleman” you should just play him the entire time and then it gets very fun with only a few levels likely to make you snap your Switch in frustration (and I definitely wouldn’t try and 100% the levels, in a single life anyway.)

But yeah… this is definitely more of a strong recommend specifically for people with a full-fat Switch and/or pals.

Will I ever play it again? So I feel like it’s been very intentional that I haven’t played the last couple of campaigns to give me a reason to go back to it, especially if I ever get the Switch2 (the Twitch?) or whatever rather than just the Lite one because I don’t have any urge to side-grade.

Final Thought: “What about online, though?” You ask. Well that’s (unfortunately) pretty dead, and playing with randoms is arse anyway. It’s not Monaco’s fault! It’s society!!!

     he can never sleep on airplanes. not without the help of his mother’s sleeping pills, at least. for a two-hour flight, he thought it might be too much to bring them, but now he regrets it. on his left, his younger brother snores up a storm, his first-class seat transformed into a comfortable bed, which he covers with all his long, growing limbs. on his right, his sister mutters curse words to herself while angrily pressing the buttons on her nintendo switch. it’s only him, stuck in the middle, plagued by his own thoughts as the plane takes off into the sky, the sun having yet to rise. 

     they were forced into the earliest flight out of zurich, at his father’s orders. there’d been barely any time for greetings, after months of not seeing one another, before their chaperone promptly escorted them into the park family’s private jet, his sour face and trembling hands waiting for the worst. of course, there is nothing more humiliating than his parents still believing sinclair needs to be babysat, but a more rational part of him knows they are right. god knows how many times he ended up buying a completely different ticket, flying off to asia when he was supposed to head to south america. he just wishes he didn’t have to see them. 

     “fuckdammnitsonofabitch,” ren jumps up, discarding her console on the ground, bridging the space between their seats to join him on the larger couch, his flat-screen tv showing trailers of movies he won’t watch.

     “what were you playing?” he asks, because he feels like she wants him to. her lips curl. 

     “animal crossing.” 

     he scoffs in amusement, earning himself a kick far stronger than he remembers her being able to give. which is another thing bothering him, beyond being called upon by his father like a dog, dropping every thing in his life to play at being the perfect nuclear family. when he first saw them at the airport, he barely recognized his siblings. they’ve grown taller, older. tristan’s five o’clock shadow might actually be a reality, rather than his desperate attempts to seem older than seventeen. as for his little sister, she looks more and more like the girls he goes to st. agathe’s with, her baby cheeks disappearing under the thick make-up. he’s missing it all, because they’d rather grow apart, than grow with leonard. 

     “i hate dining with royals,” she blurts out, head falling against the couch. “they’re so boring, god. if you pick up the wrong fork, you’re fucked up. if you speak out of turn, you’re fucked. i even had to dye my hair back because apparently being asian and blonde is an offense to the fucking prince of monaco.”

     “you’re swearing a lot,” sinclair notes, frowning at the words that fly so easily out of her mouth. hypocrite, he thinks. 

     “i’m trying to get it out before we land. you know mom’s going to parade us around the whole day, like we’re the royal family blessing them with our presence.” unfortunately, he knows that all too well. leonard park and his family are royalty in their own way. he’s the richest man in the world. his wife is a genius, and his three children are examples for all well-behaved, elite children around the world. or at least, that’s what the press is paid to report on. god forbids anyone hears words of his father’s cruelty, or his wife’s depression, or the fact that his children see rules and regulations as mere suggestions to ignore, or worst, mock. sometimes, sinclair is certain leonard would rather have one of them die, instead of bringing him shame. 

     “she also told me to tell you not to sleep with princess alexandra, this time,” ren calmly says, as sinclair’s eyes widen at the horribly disgusting thought of his mother discussing his sex life with his younger sister. 

     “what---”

      “she said you’d only listen if it came from this face.” at that, her hands form a ‘v’ around her cheeks, innocently looking up at him, as she often did when they were children and he’d be in charge of making sure she didn’t commit any damage to their guests’ house. he closes his eyes, turning away from her. 

     “i’m done talking to you.” 

     “wait,” she chuckles, tapping at his shoulder. he turns half-way, one eyebrow raised. “did she like it? did henrietta like the scarf?” he’d almost forgotten about it. not the scarf, that would be impossible. he’s spent far too many nights with that exact scarf haunting his fantasies, and all the things he’d promised to henri next time. rather, he’d forgotten his little sister was a tool in something he hopes she never gets involved in. she deserves a lot better than the theodores and sinclairs of the world. 

     “she did,” he replies, simply. he can tell she’s waiting for more, her eyes focused on him like a hawk, trying to pry him open. that’s always been her talent. to unnerve until explosion. “she wore it recently. it looked really pretty. thank you.” 

     she smiles, and he recognizes her a little bit more. it’s the chipped front tooth, that her parents have tried to get her to fix since she was ten. but like her older brothers, ren has never shied away from scars. “you’re welcome.” 

     at that, she turns away from him, focusing her eyes on the tv as an episode of riverdale begins to play. he groans, reaching for earpods, tuning out the world for the rest of the flight.

     by the time the day ends at the prince’s palace of monaco, sinclair is all but emotionally spent. endless hours of parading around monte carlo, pretending his mother hadn’t hired a paparazzi to catch them on their ‘totally normal and entirely functional family outing’ which consisted of whispered scoldings and diamond-white grins, and of course, the unpleasant climax as his father’s sudden presence ruined his first experience inside a formula one car. as far as family reunions go, this has been the quietest. and yet, he was unable to relax for even a single second. 

     “sinclair, fix your tie,” his mother orders, as the five of them walk in unison towards the royal ballroom, hosting their annual charity gala. he can already predict how the night will go. the prince will shake leonard for money, and his father will take as many pictures of the two as possible. look at him, donating millions to save endangered animals. who cares that his company is under investigation for human rights’ violations? sinclair holds back a sigh, fixing the black tie around his neck. restrictive. much like a leash. 

     they stop before the closed doors, the sound of violins and animated chatter behind it waiting patiently for their fashionably late arrival. late enough to catch everyone’s eyes, but not too late to offend a monarch. his father turns his imposing figure towards his children, a smile on his lips, but death in his eyes. 

     “what are the rules?” he asks, a military instructor’s voice replacing his media-built carefree persona. sinclair nearly spouts off a series of insults that always reside on the tip of his tongue in his father’s presence, but one look from emily seo is enough to keep him in place. pick your battles. 

     the three children recite his list of rules, voices becoming one, lips moving in perfect synch. perfect little soldiers, keeping the facade alive, hiding all their ugly behind leonard park’s promise of pain and suffering. always smile. don’t fight. don’t try to be smart. try to speak only when spoken to. sit straight. no playing games. no running around. but mostly, don’t embarrass your family. 

     he eyes them from head-to-toe, their outfits chosen by a hollywood star’s stylist, fit for a red carpet. not a single hair out of place, only real diamonds on their wrists, none of sinclair’s tattoos and earrings, or tristan’s highlighter pink hair to disturb the elite’s sight. perfect. so perfect, sinclair might just throw up before the night’s over. seemingly satisfied, leonard takes his wife’s hand, pushing open the ballroom doors, a world of light and glamour opening up to them. 

    “if we’re still here in three hours, i want you to push me off the balcony,” tristan whispers, as a smile begins to grow on his mouth, the crowd moving as one to greet the new arrival. sinclair imitates him, his facial muscles already protesting.

     “not if i jump first,” he says, before diving head first.

The (disappointing) Gaming Slovenian Paradise - Not!!

Today, me and my girlfriend @aquamoon33 went on a Slovenian Gaming Convention (SGC), called Epicenter 20 LAN in the city in between our capital and the 2nd biggest city - in Celje.

We went there quite early, at about 9.00 a. m. from Postojna and then came at around 10.30 a. m. to Celje. We parked quite fast and after my girlfriend @aquamoon33 tried out my new Ring Fit Adventure game (she’s really good at it!), we went straight to the big room K4, where the event had taken place.

This is the path to Celje.

When we got our bracelet for our convention status (we were only “visitors)”, we had the chance to get around the room and see what was hapenning. And ... welll ... there was really nothing there. Some stants for the upcoming 2020 PES game, a somw chairs to play DRIFT on PS4, a big gaming room, where most of the people were playing Fortnite and Minecraft and some table football, air hockey and snooker tables. That was all. All we had. So we decided that first, we should play some air hockey, where I won both games of airhockey, and then some snooker.

And she played the snooker game for the first time in her life. She played really well with my help. After that, we went to play some Switch games. She showed me, how Astral Chain looks like, and I we played some Monaco: What is yours is mine and a few rounds of Skullgirls. Turn out, that the people had quite a light bladder, because they came and went constantly to the toilets where we were. No, we are not toilet material! Also, we are not toilet humour. There was just a table there were we could put our Switches on it. And those boys where looking like they had seen an alien/elephant in the room!

The most annoying thing about playing out-and-about was the fact, that we were just -judging by our status - visitors and not players. We’ve payed 6x times less than players have, but we could still play “analogue”, not “digital games. And that confused me. Nobody was looking at our arms to say that we were not aloud to play whatsoever. Maybe the organisers were fed-up, becuase there was a Saturday and Sunday event and we went to thr latter one. There was not so many people around, nor where there any stands to play stuff. In comparasion with japanese anime events, everybody knows each other, there are a lot of stants you can visit, video games they are - here, there was only a handful of people, not many stands and ONLY PC GAMES!! And this is why we were only about 2 hours there. Then, we went at about 1 p.m. back home.

Heute gingen ich und meine Freundinn AquaMoon33 auf der Slowenischen Gaming Convention, auf gennant als Epicenter 20 LAN in der Stadt zwischen unserer Hauptstadt und der 2t größten Stadt Maribor - nach Celje.

Wir gingen dorthin sehr früh, um ca. 9 Uhr von Postojna und kamen um ca. 10.30 nach Celje. Wir parkten ganz schon schnell und nachdem meine Freundinn das Spiel Ring Fit Adventure ausprobierte (und sie war sehr gut darin!), gingen wir sofort zum Raum K4, wo sich die Spielkonvention auffant.

Das ist der Weg nach Celje.

Als wir unsere Armbänder bekamen (wir ware nur „Besucher), hatten wir die Chance ein bisschen herum zu gehen und zu sehen was so passiert. Und ... na ja... da gab es echt nicht viel zu sehen. Ein paar Ständer von der noch zukommenen PES 2020 Spiel, ein par Rennstühle mit GRIP Spiel auf der PS4, eine großen Spieleraum, wo die meisten Leute waren und Spiele wie Fortnite oder Minecraft spielten und ein Raum mit Tischfussball, Lufthockey und Billiard-Tische. Meine Freundinn spielt zum ersten Mal Billiard!

Und sie spielte zum ersten Mal in ihrem Leben Billiard mit mir. Und sie spiete sehr gut mit meiner hilfe. Nachdem spielten wir ein paar Switch Spiele. Sie zeigte mir das Spiel Astral Chain, wie es aussieht und wir spielten auf meiner Switch ein bisschen Monaco: Whats yours is mine und Skullgirls. Man schliesst fest, das die Leute um uns herum eine sehr dichte Blase hatten, den sie gingen hin und her auf die Toilette. Nein, wir zwei sind kein Toiletten-Material! Wir sind auch nicht Toiletten-Humour. Da gab es nun einen kleineren Tisch, wo wir unsere Switches platzieren konnten. Und diese Burschen sahen uns an, als sahen sie einen Alien oder Elefanten im Raum!

Das einzige nicht gute gefühl war der Fakt, dass wir nicht wussten, was wir machen bzw. was wir benutzen konnten, da wir nur „Besucher“ und keine „Spieler“ waren. Wir zahlten nähmlich das sechsfache weniger als die Spieler bezahlten, aber wir konnten nur „analoge“ und eine „digitalen“ Spiele spielen. Und das hat mich sehr verwirrt. Keine sah sich um, was wir spielen könntrn und wollten. Vielleicht waren die Organisatoren zu müde, da sie schon eine Tage vorher diesen Event haben hatten. Zum vergleich, auf Anime-japan Konvention kennen sich alle schon vor vorher, da gibt es viele Stande zu durhvuhern, es gibt auch Videospiele - hier gab es nur ein paar Burschen, nicht viele Stande und nur PC SPIELE!! Und das war der Grund wieso wir nur zwei Stunden dort waren. Um ca. 13 Uhr gingen wir nämlich zurück nach Hause.

Seriously, do we really need “League of Legends meet Pokemon”? I was expecting Sinnoh remakes/Let’s Go Johto or Detective Pikachu 2. But no, we get a s%$^^y mobile phone app with “Microtransactions”. Seriously, it’s becoming as bad as Yo-Kai Watch now (They released eleven games, including mobile games, in seven years; it bit them in the ass when Yo-Kai Watch 4 flopped hard; even the “Updated Re-release” flopped as well). I don’t mind Spin-off games such as Mystery Dungeon, Pokemon Ranger, Detective Pikachu and Pokemon Conquest (At least they kept the core basis of the games and did something different; Conquest was “What if 16th Century Japanese warlords had Pokemon?” while Ranger was about the enviroment; Detective Pikachu was a mystery while Mystery Dungeon is about Pokemon in a community) The “Free-to-Start” almost certainly means “Pay-to-Win”, plus they announced this a day after Nintendo, who owns 1/3 of The Pokemon Company, announces they will stop doing mobile phone games (Due to European regulations on gambling; that was why Pokemon games after Diamond and Pearl didn’t have a Game Corner and a reason why the Virtual Console releases of the Generation 1 and 2 games were rated “12″. It’s because in Europe, games aimed at kids must not have any form of gambling; even fictional. As well as that, but Europe has a huge problem with underage gambling. I remembered reading about a family who lost £400 after their kids spent the money trying to get Leo Messi in a FIFA game. Underage gambling was the reason why a mobile Mario game was banned in Belgium and The Netherlands.) Even the Japanese fanbase are fuming about it. New Pokemon Snap, I can understand as people have been waiting twenty years for a sequel to the original, but nobody asked for this. The remake of “Mystery Dungeon” I can understand, as the original games are long out-of-print and the Switch isn’t “Backwards Compactiable”. If the announcement had been for Sinnoh Remakes with a 2021 release date everyone would be okay with it (Game Freak announced that “There is a new game and a new generation coming soon” shortly after announcing Let’s Go Pikachu and Eevee in 2018, but we didn’t get any more information until 2019; for the rest of 2018 and early 2019 the fanbase knew that there was a new game). Pokemon Go didn’t have an impact on Pokemon Sun and Moon though, and Pokemon Sun and Moon released several months after Pokemon Go. As much as I don’t really like “Pokemon Masters”, at least it gave the Gy Leaders, Trial Captains, Elite Four and Champions personality and having them interact with each other; plus Pasio is basically the “Monaco of the Pokemon World” in my headcanon. I don’t think this game will be successful (Out of the Pokemon mobile offerings, only Pokemon Go  have been successful, while Pokemon Masters is successful but isn’t as huge as Go.)

Monaco coming to the Nintendo Switch Monday October 21

I've been asked the question countless times... "Is Monaco coming to the Switch?" "When is Monaco gonna be on the Switch?" "Please wink at me if Monaco is coming to the Switch." . . . .

Well...

Monaco is coming to the Switch. I'm calling it Monaco: Complete Edition because it comes with all the post-launch content added to the PC version after launch: A Survival campaign, detailing the origin stories of each of the thieves, a brutal Epilogue campaign that ties up the loose ends of the epic heist story, and a zombie mode, allowing you to play through the entire game again with the guards replaced by a variety of brain-eating zombies.

We've got Sickhead Games to thank for the port (the guys responsible for the PS4 port of Tooth and Tail). They did an amazing job.

The Switch version supports couch co-op, local networked play (multiple devices playing on a local network over wifi), and of course online play. Play with controller in any configuration, including one player on each joy con.

The Mega Man Factory, Part 11: The GG Shinobi (1991)

My original intention with the Mega Man Factory series was to cover some of the major titles that took inspiration from Capcom’s Blue Bomber and see how they really measured up. I was going to go all the way up to the modern day, but after I finished the last of the Famicom/NES games I had planned to write up, I thought maybe that was good enough. And hey, maybe it was, but I’ve decided to pick it back up again. From here on out, the articles in this series aren’t going to be quite as exhaustive as the previous ones were, but I believe I can still make my point without slamming you all with text. Anyway, since the 8-bit games worth mentioning have been covered, we’re moving on to other systems now. It’s probably not a big surprise to anyone that Mega Man’s influence was strongest in the 8-bit era, but many games that came after still took cues from the series. One of the more interesting cases can be found in the handheld installments of one of SEGA’s early big franchises.

When SEGA decided to launch their own handheld machine, the Game Gear, they naturally wanted to leverage their popular brands to help the machine get going. Ports of the first Wonder Boy and Super Monaco GP were among the first recognizable titles on the system, but being ports, they had little to offer SEGA fans apart from their newfound portability. One of the first SEGA brands to arrive with an original offering was the ever-trusty Shinobi, a series that had already done a lot of playing around with its own mechanics. Just as Revenge of Shinobi had ushered in a distinctive style of play on the Genesis, The GG Shinobi would also shake things up for the franchise on Game Gear. There were two games in this sub-series, but the sequel doesn’t venture far from the first, so I’ll mostly be focusing on the original title.

Riffing off of the popular Super Sentai series of superhero TV shows in Japan, The GG Shinobi gives us not one ninja but five, each adorned in their own unique colors. There’s just one problem: four of the five are apparently pretty lousy ninjas, as they’ve gotten themselves kidnapped and brainwashed. Leader Red has to set out and rescue them one by one before going after the real threat behind the chaos that has struck... Ninja Valley. I’m not making that up, it’s in the manual, I swear. The first sign that something interesting is up here is that you’re presented with a level select screen when you start the game. You can choose the order in which you rescue your teammates. Score one point for the Mega Man comparison. Once you choose a stage, however, it’s basically business as usual for anyone who has played the Genesis Shinobi games. Jump, duck, and slice your way through the levels, cracking open crates that might have a goodie or a bomb inside. Red feels a lot like Joe Musashi, except he can’t double-jump, wall-kick, or fire shurikens. He also only has access to one ninja magic attack, an earthquake that damages everything on-screen. He also has a really tiny life bar. Depending on the stage you choose and how thoroughly you explore, you might discover that certain items permanently expand that life bar.

It’s when you clear a stage that the biggest change becomes clear. After you knock some sense into them, your rescued teammate will join your team. You’ll be able to switch to them at any time after that by accessing the pause menu. Each one has their own weapon and ninja magic ability to call their own, but more importantly, each one also has a unique way to navigate the levels. For example, Pink tosses bombs and can climb on ceilings, while Yellow fires energy projectiles and can walk across the top of water. Certain characters make particular stages easier to get through, and the only way you can find all of the life bar extensions is through judicious use of your whole team. Once you’ve assembled everyone, you’ll head off to an ultra-difficult final stage that tests your skills with each of the team members.

Take the core gameplay mechanics of Revenge of Shinobi, drop them into a Mega Man structure, and mix in a healthy dose of Metroid-style non-linearity, and you’ll end up with something close to The GG Shinobi. It’s a fun game, and it has some great music by Yuzo Koshiro to boot. It’s clear where the game draws from, but it is interesting that it seemed to predict Mega Man X’s system of permanently powering up the main character by using earned abilities to reach inaccessible parts of each level. Sure, it’s something of a natural move anyway, but credit where it’s due: The GG Shinobi mixed the idea into the basic framework first. It’s quite enjoyable whether you’re a fan of Shinobi, Mega Man, or both. The first game is easily accessible via the Nintendo 3DS eShop, but due to the poor sales performance of Game Gear Virtual Console titles, SEGA never got around to putting the second game up. Shame, as it’s a little better all-around.
