AXA fund to invest $49 million in Brazil reforestation projects

An alternative investment vehicle controlled by French insurer AXA (AXAF.PA) said on Tuesday it will inject $49 million into reforestation projects in Brazil led by local startup Mombak.

AXA IM Alts, which has over 185 billion euros ($208 billion) under management, will take a minority stake in the startup to help scale up operations and technology.

Mombak, which is also backed by Bain Capital, will lead projects to reforest over 10,000 hectares of degraded pastureland, generating up to 6 million carbon credits.

"We are building the largest carbon removal projects in the world," Mombak co-founder Peter Fernandez said in an interview. "The single largest opportunity that humanity has to do reforestation is in Brazil."

McLaren Investe em Sustentabilidade Comprando Créditos de Carbono Brasileiros

A McLaren Racing anunciou nesta quinta-feira (30) um plano ambicioso para atingir emissões líquidas zero até 2040, integrando-se na luta global contra as mudanças climáticas. Como parte deste compromisso, a empresa fez acordos significativos para a compra de créditos de carbono de projetos de reflorestamento na Amazônia e de iniciativas de remoção de CO2 no Reino Unido e nos Estados Unidos. A McLaren, conhecida por sua presença nas competições de Fórmula 1 e Fórmula Indy, enfrenta desafios únicos devido às emissões geradas não apenas pelo automobilismo, mas também por atividades como viagens aéreas. Com um calendário de Fórmula 1 previsto para incluir 24 corridas em 22 países diferentes no próximo ano, a necessidade de medidas sustentáveis é ainda mais premente. Um dos principais acordos anunciados envolve a startup brasileira Mombak, especializada em reflorestar terras degradadas na Amazônia. Além disso, a McLaren firmou parceria com a UNDO, uma empresa escocesa focada em tecnologias para a remoção de CO2 da atmosfera através do processo de aumento do desgaste das rochas. Estas iniciativas refletem um compromisso significativo da McLaren com a redução de sua pegada de carbono. Além dessas parcerias, a McLaren está colaborando com a Great Barrier Reef Foundation, uma organização sem fins lucrativos australiana que trabalha pela restauração dos recifes de coral. Microsoft dips toes into Brazil's voluntary carbon market

Tech giant Microsoft announced it has purchased 1.5 million carbon credits from a Brazilian startup, funding a project to reforest degraded parts of the Amazon rainforest.

The company did not disclose how much it paid in the transaction, but it is the company’s biggest foray so far into carbon credits anywhere in the world, forming part of its goal to become carbon neutral by 2030.

The Brazilian startup in question, Mombak, has pledged to plant more than 100 species of native trees in degraded portions of the Amazon in the northern state of Pará, covering a total area equivalent to five times the size of Manhattan.

The state of Pará is the biggest deforestation hotspot in Brazil’s so-called “Legal Amazon,” and has been since 2006. Governor Helder Barbalho is in Dubai for the UN Climate Change Conference (COP28) and is seeking to change his state’s image from deforestation villain to climate pioneer, announcing a public program for individually tracing cattle heads.
