The Moldy Peaches – Brooklyn Steel – August 10, 2023
Tumblr media
The Moldy Peaches rose out of the downtown antifolk scene around the turn of the millennium, becoming a cult band thanks to their live performances and several recorded releases (including some on CDR). They broke into the mainstream when the chart-topping Juno soundtrack came out in 2007. And a year later, the Moldy Peaches were broken up. But you can’t keep a good band down, and after playing three dates in Europe this past spring, the reunited Moldy Peaches put on their first headlining U.S. show in two decades last night at a very welcoming Brooklyn Steel.

Before taking the stage, they put on the Moldy Peaches Talent Show with performances by band members doing two-song sets: Guitarist Toby Goodshank went first, followed by Bass Race (featuring bassist Steven Mertens), then Only Son (guitarist Jack Dishel) and the pop duo Candy Boys (with drummer Brent Cole).
After the talent show, Kimya Dawson’s aunt Patrice Jetter, a disability-rights activist, addressed the audience. Then the Moldy Peaches took the stage in costumes. They played straight through with no encore, Dawson joking that they’d played all 21 of their songs. But for the finale, she and Adam Green performed as a duo, like they first did when they began in the late ’90s.

Got to see a showing of Meet Me in The Bathroom at my local theater. A companion piece to the 2017 book of the same name by Lizzy Goodman. One of my all time favorite books which detailed the explosion of the post-punk revival/garage rock scene in New York during the early 2000s. That’s a period of time in music that deeply impacted me as a kid who was starting to make music as part of my identity later on. Interpol was probably my second favorite band growing up after Nirvana after all. Being able to read about how it all began and how it unfurled into one of the most influential movements in rock n roll, was an incredibly immersive experience following the paths of some of my favorite bands ever such as Interpol, The Strokes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Tv on the Radio… and many more artists that influenced my love for music. When I heard a music doc was also in the works I was so excited to see the footage of these bands in their early stages of stardom. It was a beautiful ride, at times a bit dark showing the contrasts between the pre 911 world a lot of us used to know… and the post 911 World and how it impacted the music scene at the height of its appeal. It was a raw, unfiltered lens into a period of time in music that I adore. 11/10 can’t wait to see it again!

Lots of pretty looking shows this year and considering I got a $4 raise today they all seem a little more plausible.
Trying to figure out and pick and choose tho.....and then I saw Moldy Peaches in Brooklyn.
Goddamn. GODDAMN.

KIMYA DAWSON – MONO 13th JUNE 2023
Kimya Dawson founded The Moldy Peaches with Adam Green in the early 90’s. I had been a fan of their unique music and initially missed the announcement that she was coming to the UK and would be playing a tiny gig in Mono. Inevitably, I missed out on tickets and then missed the announcement that a matinee gig on the same day would take place, and again inevitably missed out.
Mono is just round from my work so I decided to wander round to Mono on the day and stand outside to see if I could get a ticket from someone or maybe sweet talk the promoter. It was a roasting hot day and I sat outside the venue at 4pm but after the crowd were in, it was clear there were no spare tickets. In a final attempt, I asked the ticket desk if there were any returns, could I pay, any chance? She shouted over the promoter, and he said that someone had come in with 2 tickets but their friend hadn’t so I could just come in. I could not believe my luck!
I had made it in just in time and stood near the back near the bar as I was so thirsty after a couple of hours sunbathing outside Mono. Even from the bar the stage isn’t far away. Mono is a very intimate venue and we had been asked, if possible, to wear a mask as Kimya had medical conditions that would not welcome covid.
Kimya’s set up is a simple one, just a microphone, an acoustic guitar, and a chair. She ran through 20 songs, many of which the audience joined in with and it felt like a very special gig. The goodwill towards Kimya was obvious and there was such a happy and joyous atmosphere.
I was so glad to have persisted and had been able to witness the joy that one singer can bring to a room of adoring fans. Mono is such a wonderful venue and never seems to disappoint.
