HU TAO
Tumblr media
Hu Tao was one to order takeout often, however in all her years of ordering from this one specific chain, she had never met a delivery girl as pretty as you before.
Lounging around in her PJs while chatting idly with a phone lodged between her cheek, she made her way over to the door and was barely even paying attention when your voice short-circuited her brain.
“Delivery for Hu Tao!”
She nearly dropped her phone at your voice, body frozen stiff as she shakily ended her call to put her focus on you. ‘Holyyyy crap is this the new delivery girl??? I’ve never seen her before…!’ She was practically gawking at the sight, drool building up in her throat as she struggled to find her voice.
“Wow, I heard our food was pretty good but I didn’t expect you to salivate that much upon arrival,” you teased. “Do you…need a tissue?”
OH RIGHT SHE’S STILL STARING—
“No! It’s okay!” That was a lie, Hu Tao was in fact not okay. “I just— I’m just hungry!”
“(Chuckle) I can see…”
Hu Tao was internally cursing herself for wearing such unflattering PJs. Why in the everliving heavens did she decide to wear this of all things? Especially her ghost slippers! The ones that had the derpy looking faces on them! Agghhh what must you think of her now?!
‘She must think I look ridiculous!’ Hu Tao grimaced.
‘Cute slippers. I want them.’ You smiled and kept on staring.
‘She’s staring at them! Oh noooooo!’ Hu Tao screamed.
“As cute as you are staring at me, can you take these inside, please? They’re really hot and kind of burning my hands.” Hu Tao snapped out of her panic and realized that you were still holding the food she had ordered. Cursing herself even more as you must’ve stood there waiting for her to take them for god knows how long.
“Right, let me just get these off your hands…” Hu Tao shivered when her hand brushed against yours, noting how soft and warm they were as if you weren’t just scalding your hands moments ago. “This is everything, right?”
“Mhm! Everything you ordered is here.” You wiped away some sweat with the back of your hand and Hu Tao swears she saw god for a moment. “Now for the bill…”
“Oh, yeah! Let me just go grab my wallet.” Hu Tao stiffly walked back inside with the grace of a nutcracker and exhaled sharply once her back was turned to you. Has– Has the house always been so warm? Hu Tao pulled at the collar of her PJs and fanned herself as she went to go find her bag. Or was she cold? It feels like her heart is pounding right out of her chest! Good gods she must be possessed!
After paying you the bill –as well as a very generous tip may I add— Hu Tao shut the door with a quiet thud and practically raced to her upstairs bedroom. Launching face first into her pillow and screaming as loud as she could muffle without disturbing the neighbors.
‘AAAAAAAAAAAAA-’ She kicked her legs up and down and had long forgotten about the food she had left in the kitchen. Her mind instead flooded with thoughts of you, your pretty smile, your face, your whole…everything!
“She must be a fiend…” Hu Tao murmured, sinking her face into her pillow as heat began to pour from her cheeks. “What a devilish restaurant, using such a temptress to get me to order again next time…I’ve been bewitched…”

YAE MIKO
Tumblr media
Miko in a modern setting would totally be a Starbucks kind of girl. Ordering it every chance she gets and even having her name spelled correctly as she was a frequent customer.
However, as frequent as she may be, there are times where she is simply too lazy to drive there herself. So, she settles for delivery whenever she couldn’t be bothered to.
Though, after this one occasion, it seems like Miko will now be ordering delivery every time she gets…
Halfway through with getting her nails painted, Miko’s ears perked up at the sound of the doorbell as she remembered that she had ordered drinks twenty minutes ago. Blowing profusely on her barely even dry nails, she struggled to even open her door as she didn’t want to ruin her tedious hard work. ‘I really should’ve thought this through…’ Miko seethed, fumbling with her elbows of all things to twist the knob open. ‘At least the only person seeing this would be the awkward little delivery boy—’
Girl.
Miko’s eyes widened when she saw a newer, cuter, more prettier face than the one she was already used to. Instead of some awkward teenage boy that could barely look her in the eye, a more attractive, pretty-faced woman stood in their place instead. “Starbucks delivery for Miss Miko?” you smiled sunnily.
Of course the one day Miko wasn’t looking her best, a hot girl decided to show up. Great.
“Yes, that is I,” Miko instinctively took up a flirtatious pose, even though it lost its effect as she was wearing pink fluffy sweatpants. “And who is the pretty lady if I may ask?”
“Oh, I’m just the delivery girl,” You chuckled bashfully. “Here’s your order by the way, Sorry for the wait, it appears that lots of people wanted to order from home.”
“D’awww, I’m not your first customer?” Miko jabbed playfully.
“No, I’ve actually been working as a delivery girl for a week now. So of course you wouldn’t be my first.” Miko frowned at your blunt response. “Here are your drinks. Better take them fast or else they’d melt.”
“Hmm. Fine. But can you be a dear and put them on the counter for me? My nails aren’t done drying you see,” she presented them to you proudly and gestured for you to follow her inside. “Wouldn’t want them to smear after all.”
“Of course!” You slipped off your shoes and stepped inside to set the tray on her countertop. “There you go. As for the bill…”
“Oh! The bill…” a devious smirk made its way onto Yae Miko’s lips as she had an excellent idea to make you blush. “I’m sorry dear, but I seemed to have misplaced my bag. Perhaps…I could pay you in other ways…?”
That sultry tone in her voice implied something seductive. However, you didn’t comprehend it as such as you only assumed she wanted a different payment method.
“Yeah we take Apple Pay.” You beamed innocently. “Would you like to–”
“No! That’s not what I meant…”
“...We take CashApp too.”
“No no no–!”
Miko groaned inwardly. Her attempts thwarted by your obliviousness as she turned to not spare you another thought. “I’ll…I’ll go find my bag…”
Sighing defeatedly, she paid you and sent you on your way. Plopping down at her kitchen counter and staring at her Starbucks drinks chilling in the tray in front of her. Damn, has her game been that bad lately? Miko wanted to bury herself in her hands in pity. In front of a pretty girl too…
She set her head against the cool countertop and thought about how she could woo you over to make you hers. Her drinks long forgotten about as they melted under the fiery blaze of her longing for you.
‘Looks like I’ll be ordering from home more often…’
Tumblr media
RAIDEN EI
Tumblr media
Since Ei can’t cook at all, takeout and delivery is basically all she eats. She’s a frequent customer of pretty much every fast food chain you could think of, yet the one chain she orders from the most is a certain bakery she loves for their sweets.
Most often than not, the delivery drivers for that certain bakery have all delivered to Ei’s place a numerous amount of times. However, since you were a new hire, this was the first time you’d be delivering to the well-known customer, and boy was it rough.
To put it short, you got lost.
Ei was getting impatient as she had ordered her boba and sweets over half an hour ago. What was the delivery driver doing? She was getting hungrier by the minute and her craving for sweets got much stronger with each passing minute. The moment the doorbell rang, Ei ran like lightning. Nearly tripping over a couch cushion as she stumbled to reach the doorknob in time.
‘Finally! I can see the person responsible for delaying me of my desserts–’ Ei flinched when she was greeted with a young woman breathing heavily while holding up a box of her delicious freshly-baked desserts. The smell wafted up to her nose and instantly calmed her down as she took in the appearance of the disheveled woman. Who, despite being completely out of breath, had a very pretty voice Ei noted.
“Your…Your order…miss…” you wheezed weakly. Clutching your stomach and presenting the box of goodies like it was the head of a monster you had just slayed. “Sorry for the delay. I got a little lost around the…the neighborhood.”
Your arms shook and Ei took it as a sign to grab the box before you could drop it. Watching as you picked yourself up painfully and analyzing your features as she had realized that she had never seen you before from the bakery.
‘So they hired a new girl to deliver to my house…’ Ei let her eyes wander across your face and took note of how oddly cute you were despite being all hot and sweaty. ‘Very pretty. Though punctuality is not her forte…’
“You were awfully late still.” Ei spoke bluntly.
“I know. I’m sorry. Please don’t tell my boss!” You winced.
“I won’t.” Ei murmured, grabbing the hilt of your chin and tilting it upwards to make you face her. “I quite like having you deliver to me, so I want you to keep your job.”
Unintentionally, the loser Raiden Ei had made you blush. Who would’ve thought?
“I-I…erm…” Ei watched as you fumbled over your words, heat radiating from your cheeks as she still hadn’t let go of your chin.
‘Not good with words either.’ Ei noted, ‘And her face is all warm. She really must be out of breath…’
“I will go grab my wallet,” she murmured quietly, letting go of your chin to go back inside the house. “I will be ordering from the bakery a plentiful amount of times. Expect to memorize my route by then, understood?”
“Yes ma’am…”
“Good.”
And as Ei sent you off with the bill and your tip, she sat back in her kitchen and pulled out a pastry from the box. Chewing on a mouthful and letting her thoughts drift to you once more. Thoughts wandering as a blush suddenly spread across her face.
‘Is it just me…or are these desserts even sweeter than before…’

JEAN GUNNHILDR
Tumblr media
“Aren’t the flowers pretty, Jean?”
The dandelion knight took a sharp breath of air at your words and tried hard not to think about how angelic your voice sounded. Swallowing the urge to say “you’re prettier” to your face, and instead opting to agree with you in a short, yet awkward cough.
“Yes, very much so. The citizens have done well decorating this year.”
It was the time of the Windblume festival, when you invited Jean out to go exploring for the night. Call it a date if you want, but you and Jean weren’t together by any means as you two were simply coworkers that seemed to chat all too comfortably. Simply coworkers that always hugged a bit too long whenever you were together, and simply coworkers that blushed whenever you two would accidentally touch each other.
Yep, simply coworkers. Just coworkers. Nothing more, nothing less.
But that wouldn’t stop Jean from staring at you whilst you chatted with a nearby shopkeep. Admiring how the natural gale of Mondstadt’s winds seemed to make your hair fly by so idly, or how the setting sun of Teyvat’s sky would cause your skin to blemish with a warm, hazy glow. All the little details that would make you stand out like a portrait straight out of a museum.
‘Ethereal..’ Jean thought wordlessly, as you stood oblivious to your own beauty, ‘Perhaps…today really is the day.’
Unbeknownst to you, Jean had debated on whether or not she should confess her feelings to you during the time of the Windblume festival. After all, it was a festival most well known for couples, and Jean thought it’d be extra meaningful for you if she were to confess her love on that very day.
Well, today is that very day.
“Gorgeous these flowers are, hm Jean?” You looked back at her with the face of a doe.
“Huh? Oh yes!” The knight smiled at your content and watched as you made a purchase for two flower crowns with the shopkeep. One that was yellow like Jean’s hair, and one that was white.
“Hehe, here Jean, this one’s for you.”
The dandelion knight stood stiffer than a board when you placed the small wreath of flowers on top of her. Face absolutely blooming with red when she realized that the two flower crowns you had bought were symbols for someone confessing their love.
“Y/N, these crowns! Th-They—“
Jean could not help but cover her face in embarrassment. Was this your confession to her? Did you like her back?
“They’re pretty right?” You seemed oblivious to their symbolism and plopped your own flower crown on top of your head. “I have a keen eye for these kinds of things.”
“O-Oh, right. Yes, they are very pretty…” Jean couldn’t help but deflate at her misunderstanding. “I see, thank you for purchasing them, Y/N.”
You innocently smiled back at her, practically beaming with obliviousness at what you had done and tormenting the poor Favonius knight, as It was now up to her to pull the first string.
Up to her, and now she was a bit more doubtful.
What if you knew what the flower crowns symbolized and this was your way of rejecting her? Did you catch on to the acting grandmaster's horrible attempts to cover up her crush? Oh Barbatos, maybe this whole Windblume confession wasn’t a good idea after all—
“OH MY BARBATOS!”
You and Jean turned to see none other than Jean’s little sister Barbara holding her face in her hands and squealing like a super fan. Running up to you oh so joyously and clasping her older sister’s hands with delight.
“You really did it!” She seemed to exclaim, her soft and gentle voice failing to conceal her excitement. “I’m overjoyed for you, Jean.”
“Barbara?!” Jean looked surprised.
“Hello Barbara!” You chirped.
“Hello Y/N! I’m so glad you accepted my sister’s confession!”
CONFESSION?!
Jean looked at Barbara, then looked at you, and then looked at the flower crowns sitting on top of your heads. Oh… The Favonius knight’s jaw fell agape. Oh no…
“B-Barbara! It’s not what it—”
“Ohh, I’m so glad things turned out well! Poor Jean was practically writhing in fear for this day as she was planning to confess to you for ages! (Sigh) Thank Barbatos for this blessed day! Now we can celebrate this newfound love together!”
“Barbara…” Jean felt a lump of saliva build up in her throat as she watched your face burn up with shame. Or, what she assumed was shame.
“Hm?” Her innocent little sister looked up at her in obliviousness.
“I…I haven’t confessed to her yet…”
“…Huh?” the nun’s face fell crestfallen. Jean’s words echoing in her mind like a hollow symphony that reminded her of what she had done. “You haven’t…b-but—“
But the flowers! Your smile, your laughter. The symbolism! How could—
“Ohhh I am so sorry!” Barbara’s face flushed with panic as she rushed to run off in a blind stupor. “Sister Rosaria put the balloons away! I repeat! Put the balloons awayyyy!”
Running off to go shove Rosaria away and cover a bunch of floating heart balloons, Jean could only wince in pure, mental pain as she felt her insides crush to a splinter. Hesitantly waiting to see what your face must’ve looked like after all the chaotic-ness that unfolded right beneath your very eyes.
‘Well that went as smooth as nails on a chalkboard’ Jean braced herself for impact when she turned to see your reaction to all of this. ‘What would Y/N think of me now…?’
“You…You were planning to confess to me?” You covered up your mouth to conceal your blush. “Really..?”
“I…I was,” the dandelion knight chewed the inside of her lip in panic. “However, I did not expect my little sister to do it for me…”
Jean turned her head away bashfully, “Please excuse me…”
“No no! I think it’s cute!” You chuckled, reaching for the acting grandmaster’s hand. “It’s very sweet, actually, and besides..”
You leaned over to whisper delicately into Jean’s ear. Her breath hitching at your hushed words.
“I was planning to confess to you first.”
Tumblr media
KAMISATO AYAKA
Tumblr media
“Mister Ayato, didn’t you hear? Ayaka’s bringing a woman home!”
Ayato nearly spat out his boba at Thoma’s words, and stared slack-jawed at the wall while the housekeeper danced in glee.
“A woman! An actual woman! Oh how Lady Ayaka has grown!” Thoma smiled joyously and grabbed a broomstick propped against the wall. “I must get the estate in tip top shape! I heard that this was the woman that Ayaka wanted to court.”
“…I beg your pardon?” Ayato’s brow twitched at his oblivious housekeeper, and watched as he started sweeping with the grace of a ballet dancer, completely nonchalant to Ayato’s thunderous tone. “Oh? You didn’t hear, sir?” Thoma grinned and grabbed a nearby dustpan to sweep, “Ayaka has been over the moon for this girl. I’ve never seen her so smitten in all my years of working here.”
“Smitten?” It seems like Ayato was having trouble processing this whole ordeal. “A woman? Ayaka? My little sister Ayaka?!”
The older Kamisato practically crushed the boba cup in his hand out of annoyance, splashing the milk tea and pearls everywhere and spilling it all over his shirt.
“M-Mister Ayato!”
“Make this woman stay for dinner. I’d like to have a chat with her…”
“I…of course, sir…but let’s get you into a new shirt…”
Dinner came without any major complications. At the news of her big brother personally inviting you to stay for dinner, Ayaka was ecstatic. Nervous, but ecstatic to be with you longer as —like Thoma said— she was simply over the moon for you. And knowing that her big brother wanted you to stay for longer? Hah! Ayaka could cry tears of joy!
‘He must’ve taken a liking to you…’ were the younger Kamisato’s thoughts as she watched him eye you from the back of a shoji screen. ‘Y/N really is the perfect woman for me…’
Well, she was right about one thing, and it wasn’t Ayato taking a liking to you…
Her big brother couldn’t help but be bitter at the way you were fitting in so smoothly with the rest of the Kamisato family and staff. Smiling oh so joyously and making his Ayaka laugh with how charming and witty you were with your words. Ayato had to admit, he couldn’t find a single thing wrong with you, which in turn made him even more bitter.
“The food is amazing, Thoma! You really cooked all of this yourself?” You beamed like the sun itself and gratefully ate bite after bite of the dish Thoma had prepared for this evening. Ayato seething since your compliment showed your humble side, and noting that this was just yet another pro to your ongoing list of pros vs cons. Something Ayato thought was impossible when it came to Ayaka’s suitors.
“All from scratch! And Lady Ayaka helped prepare the food too, she helped marinate the fish.”
You turned to Ayaka who was seated right next to you and smiled. Truly proud of how good of a cook the princess could be. “You marinated the fish? It’s incredible, Ayaka. I’ve never tasted anything quite like it…”
“Ah…th-thank you Y/N!” Ayaka smiled endearingly and tried to cover up her blush by eating another piece of rice. Chewing quickly to avoid the spread of tomato face. ‘Ahh she complimented me!’
Ayato however, was not as ecstatic. Sitting there with the most poker-faced face you had ever seen on a man, and effectively making you sit on the edge of your seat in suspense. The hard stare of the man alone was enough to get you nervous enough to break into a cold sweat, and you couldn’t help but chug down a glass of water in an attempt to calm yourself.
‘Wh-Why is he staring at me like that?!’ You swallowed a lump of saliva, feeling like you were being judged. ‘Did I do something wrong?’
‘Do something wrong. Come onnn..!’ Ayato frowned.
‘What a lovely dinner this has been.’ Thoma smiled.
‘I’m so gayyy…’ Ayaka blushed.
With all four of you amidst your own specially unique thoughts, Ayato decided that now was the perfect time to start phase one of the interview. As you seemed to be caught off guard and Ayaka was too distracted trying to fan herself from how hot you were.
“So, Miss Y/N…” Ayato hummed, quickly snagging your attention away from the food. “How did you meet my dear sister Ayaka?”
His younger sister suddenly choked on a piece of tofu and started hacking into a napkin in an attempt to stifle herself from Ayato’s words. Innocent they may seem, but the answer to that question was far from so. “M-Meet?” The tips of Ayaka’s ears turned red as she thought back to your very first meeting. “Oh…it was quite embarrassing…”
“Embarrassing…?” Ayato’s faux smile twitched as he glared at you from behind his masked eyelids. ‘You heathen. I knew you did something to my poor Ayaka. No one is that perfect.’
“Do you wish for me to share, Ayaka?” Your gentle words made the princess flush, “If you are not comfortable, that is completely alright. It shall stay a secret between us two.” You pressed a finger to your lips and smiled, causing the young Kamisato to flare up even more.
‘Archons, can this girl not be so charming?’ Ayato seethed. Thoma all the while, enjoying every second of this like a proud mother. ‘It’s almost impossible to hate her…’
“Y-You can share, Y/N. I don’t mind as long as it’s just Thoma and my brother.” Ayaka shyly peered down at her bowl of rice and failed to conceal the small smile growing upon her face. Shy as she was, she seemed to really enjoy how enthusiastic you were in sharing about your relationship, making her all the more excited to court you when the time comes.
“If you say so,” you chuckled, lying your head on Ayaka’s shoulder and smiling affectionately at her as if you were already dating. “Ayaka and I met with a very…interesting inconvenience. You see, I was walking my dog along the streets of Inazuma, when Goldfish spotted Ayaka and decided to jump on her out of excitement.”
“Hold on, goldfish?” Thoma clarified.
“Hm? Oh! My dog’s name is Goldfish.” You confirmed. “I’ve always wanted a goldfish but my father got me a dog.”
‘…Well that’s odd. Usually it’s the other way around.’ Ayato couldn’t help but get a bit more curious about you now. In a more…good way, to be specific.
“Anywho, after Goldfish ran up to Ayaka and accidentally tackled her to the ground, that was when I first caught a glimpse of her and rushed to apologize profusely,” you turned to Ayaka apologetically and cringed. “I’m so sorry once again, Ayaka. Goldfish too.”
“Y/N, I’ve told you it’s alright,” Ayato watched as Ayaka giggled at your guilt-sunken eyes. “It just caught me by surprise, really.”
‘Even so, that doesn’t change the fact that you let your dog trample over my sister…’ Ayato grumbled. ‘She deserved a new dress.’
“You’re so sweet Ayaka…” you giggled, “Anyways, I made it up to her by ordering her a custom made, tailored dress that was made of the finest Sumerian silk and designed by the best seamstress in all of Fontaine. I made sure it was of the finest quality after the misfortune that I caused for Ayaka that day.”
After concluding that story, Ayato felt his jaw drop. Had you read his mind? A new dress? Sumeru silk? The best seamstress in all of Fontaine?!
Ayaka fussed over how much mora you must’ve spent to apologize to her, yet all Ayato could think of was ‘damn, she spoils her well. I like her.’ Instantly winning his approval, and immediately putting you on the highest pedestal for the tower of Ayaka’s suitors.
“That must’ve been very expensive and generous of you, Miss Y/N,” and for once this whole dinner, Ayato let his mask slip and a genuine smile show through. “No wonder my sister wishes to court you. You seem like a lady of refined taste, haha…”
You, Thoma, and especially Ayaka all froze at Ayato’s nonchalant words. Her big brother chuckling to himself all too innocently as he hadn’t realized he had ruined the surprise.
“Uhm, Mister Ayato….” Thoma whispered, his ears burning red from second-hand embarrassment. “Miss Y/N and Lady Ayaka aren’t together yet…”
“Hm? Well of course they aren’t—“ and then his words caught up with him. “They aren’t…o-oh…”
‘Did I hear him correctly?’ Your face started heating up at the thought. ‘Ayaka wishes to court me…?’
“Ayato…” Ayaka fumed, steam pouring from her ears as she saw your face grow redder and redder. “Ayato…”
Ayato had never seen Ayaka so embarrassed in all his life. Shaking like a leaf as she had never expected for her confession to turn out this way at all.
“Oh Ayaka…I’m so—“
“Hahsjdjdndnf—“
Then she passed out in embarrassment.
And that’s how Ayaka —or Ayato in this case— accidentally confessed to you and started a newfound relationship. After you made sure she was okay, of course.

NAGANOHARA YOIMIYA
Tumblr media
“Big Sister Yoimiya…what’re you doing…?”
Yoimiya nearly leapt out of her skin at the sound of Klee’s voice, as she was hiding in a bush trying hard not to look overly suspicious. Too bad she failed however, as even a child as young as Klee could easily  spot Yoimiya from a distance. Though, she is a Favonius knight…
“I— I was— I wasn’t—!” Babbling on for an excuse, Klee took it upon herself to follow Yoimiya’s gaze and spotted you chatting idly not too far away. Tilting her head at the sight, as the situation out of context made it seem like Yoimiya was stalking you. Which, let’s be honest, she was doing unintentionally.
“Big Sister Yoimiya, were you stalking Miss Y/N?” The child asked innocently, cutting her rambling short.
“Huh? No! No no of course not!” Yoimiya sputtered out all too quickly. “I was just…well, trying to think of a way to court her. That’s all.”
Should she really be revealing all of this? Yoimiya bit her lip as a blush spread forth upon her face. I mean, Klee is only a child, there’s no way she could understand such an emotional topic.
“…Court her? What’s that?” Klee asked nonchalantly.
“Ah…well,” The fireworks director scratched her head in thought. “It’s like…when someone really likes a person and wishes to be with them forever.”
“Huh? Oh! Like best friends! You want to be best friends with Y/N, right?”
No, far from that actually.
“Erm…not exactly,” Yoimiya giggled all too bashfully. “I just…Y’know…really like her is all. In a more romantic sense.”
“Like her…?” Suddenly Klee’s eyes lit up. “Oh! Ohhh! You like Y/N! You like Y/N!” She suddenly started jumping up and down in excitement and started gathering the attention of many passerbyers around, much to the embarrassment of Yoimiya.
“Yoimiya likes Y/N! Yoimiya likes Y/N!”
“K-Klee!” Yoimiya panicked and quickly clasped her hands over her mouth. “Not too loud now, I don’t want anyone to know!”
Nervously looking over to where you were standing, you shot her an awkward smile as you were too far away to really hear what Klee had said. Giving the fireworks director a lopsided grin whilst you continued to chat with your friend.
“Hehehe, she’s adorable isn't she?” Yoimiya grinned before hurrying off with the little sparknight between her arms. “Now if you’d please excuse me…”
And that was the last time you saw Yoimiya before she suddenly asked you out a few days later. Trying to make you forget the awkward encounter as soon as possible as she wanted to make a good impression on you if she wanted to court you properly. She wasn’t on a very good start to begin with, but you admired her determination to talk to you anyway.
“An afternoon stroll, hm?” You were curious as to what the fireworks director had in plan. “Sure, I don’t have any plans today anyway.”
‘Yes!’
“Great! I have lots to plan for us today so let’s get going!”
Truth be told, you’ve always found Yoimiya to be pretty cute in both looks and personality. However, as a high-ranking noblewoman who came from an esteemed high-order family, you had multiple suitors waiting in line for your hand. And for you to accept Yoimiya’s, she’d have to put in a bit more effort.
This ‘date’ was pretty much a test of sorts for you to see whether or not Yoimiya was a perfect candidate to be your wife, and poor Yoimiya had no idea!
“I was thinking we could go feed some koi fish in the river. Then, we can go grab some dango and boba from the food stalls over there.”
“That sounds lovely, Yoimiya,” you smiled. Though the date itself seemed a bit simple for your tastes… “Looking forward to it.”
As simple as the idea was, Yoimiya’s smile was enough to get you to smile too. Gently pulling the wrist of your arm towards the river and settling beneath the shade of an overcast bridge.
“I bought us enough packets to last an hour. You don’t have to use them up all at once, but I thought it’d be a great way to converse while mindlessly doing something.”
Pouring a shitton of fish food packets into your hands, you could only gawk at surprise as you counted twenty…no thirty— packets of fish food that Yoimiya had somehow stored in her pockets.
Pockets? Did her outfit even have any?!
“Goodness, Yoimiya!” You laughed as the packets of fish food spilled out from your hands. “How much Mora did you spend on this?”
“Let’s just say I went a bit overboard…” the pyro woman chuckled. “Here, I’ll open up a packet for you.”
Helping to tear open a few packets for you to share, you and Yoimiya sat at the edge of the river bank and began throwing little balls of compressed fish food into the water. Watching as the different sizes and colors of koi fish darted back and forth in order to fight each other for a speck of food.
“Oh! There’s my favorite one!” Yoimiya pointed to a fish with a long, flowy tail. “I named it after you.”
“Me?”
“Mhm! Because it’s the prettiest one here!”
You felt an arrow pierce your heart at her words as she continued to innocently toss more food into the water. ‘Hm…perhaps she would be a good candidate for a suitor…’ you thought. She does know how to flatter…
“Do you come here to feed them often? It seems like they all are familiar with you.”
“Hah, I suppose,” Yoimiya smiled. “I come down sometimes when I have the time, and I guess they just got used to seeing me.”
Yoimiya pointed to a fish with a big scar. “That one’s Tanjiro. He’s the friendliest of them all and likes to get his head tapped.”
To demonstrate, Yoimiya tapped the surface of the water and watched as said fish swam up and nudged its forehead with her finger.
“Awww,” you cooed. “Did you give all of them names?”
“Some of the more distinct ones. Like this one!” She pointed to a fish that had a splotch of white in the shape of a lightning bolt.
“That one’s Zenitsu. He’s very fast and agile.”
She then pointed to a fish that looked like it was fighting with Tanjiro, swimming left and right with enough strength to splash the surface.
“That one is Inosuke. He’s the most aggressive fish.”
And finally, she pointed to the smallest fish that seemed to follow Tanjiro around like a child. Blowing out little air bubbles out of its mouth as it watched Tanjiro fight with Inosuke.
“That one is Nezuko. I have a strong suspicion her and Tanjiro are close as they always follow each other in circles.”
‘That’s so cute.’ You thought as you stared at Yoimiya with admiring, doe-like eyes. Both for the fish and Yoimiya as you had never expected for her to be this adorable.
“Such interesting names…” you hummed, impressed with how creative she was, though not enough to win over your favor. ‘She seems like a good enough suitor…however, I need to see something that’ll really push her up on that pedestal—‘
The sudden shriek of something soaring into the air cut your thoughts short as both you and Yoimiya looked at each other in surprise.
“What is—“
Another shriek, followed by an explosion caused the two of you to look up into the sky. Bright, sparkly fireworks illuminating the daytime sky as Yoimiya flinched at the array.
“F-Fireworks?!” She exclaimed, amidst a growing panic as fireworks were not supposed to go off today for any sort of reason. “But that’s impossible! We don’t have any shows today—“
And what Yoimiya saw after that made her whole world shake.
A massive series of colorful explosions shot into the air all at once. Shrieking in what felt like mocking laughter to Yoimiya as the words, “YOIMIYA LIKES Y/N!!!” In bright, bold, sparkly letters shot up into the sky. Stunning the citizens of Inazuma, as you and Yoimiya watched in complete and utter awe.
Or horror for Yoimiya’s point of view.
‘...Oh…OH MY ARCHONS–!’
Yoimiya’s eyes widened as she kept glancing at you, at the sky, and back at you in a frenzy while trying desperately to think of a solution to this disastrous outcome.
Who in Inazuma would do this to her?!
“W-Wait! Before you freak out Y/N—”
And then a bigger, more louder explosion set fire to the sky. This time dominating the silly words with a boisterous, sound barrier-breaking, even flashier explosion that formed the all-too-familiar shape of Klee’s Dodoco.
“Ah…” Yoimiya’s voice cracked as she watched the sheer size of the massive Dodoco overtake the sky. Intimidating everyone in Inazuma with its aura, and making it very well known that it was the Spark Knight of Favonius that caused such a stupor.
‘I’m so screwed…’ Yoimiya groaned inwardly. Hiding her face in shame as she couldn’t dare peak through her fingers to see what kind of face you were making. But if only she knew, that the face you were making wasn’t of disgust or annoyance, but of joy and lovesick admiration.
Oh archons...
You wanted to marry this woman.

JEAN GUNNHILDR
Tumblr media
“Are you okay? Do your feet hurt?”
With Jean’s arms wrapped protectively around yours, the two of you swayed to the romantic, slow-dance waltz together as couples just like you danced in the background of your vision. Sure, your feet ached, your dress was scratching up your thighs, and the people around you were starting to give you a headache but you’ve never felt more alive. Jean’s firm yet warm touch upon your body never ceased to make your heart flutter, and with the close proximity between you too, your heart was practically close to flying off.
“In all honesty, I’m in agony with these heels,” you chuckled, resting your head beneath your lover’s neck. “But, I do like being able to dance with you at eye level. So, I can bear the pain a little while longer.”
Jean casted a worried look with her eyes and stopped dancing to hold your shoulders. “That’s not good. You might get blisters if you overextend your comfort. Would you like to go home now? I can carry you if you’d like.” She kneeled down on the floor in a princely manner and reached to remove your shoes. “May I? I brought spare flats in case you got tired.”
Of course she did. Jean was never one to be unprepared.
“Hah, you always seem prepared for everything, Jean.” You grinned, moving to go sit down at your designated table. “I’m the luckiest girl in the world to have you.”
The tips of the Gunnhildr’s ears glowed bright pink as she moved to kneel down in front of you. Carefully removing your heels like they were Cinderella’s glass slippers and placing a kiss just above your knee. “Any pain? Do you feel sore anywhere?”
“Are you gonna give me a massage if I do?” You joked.
“If you want, I can.” Her face looked dead serious.
“Ah…Jean, I’m joking.” You pressed the back of your hand to your mouth to stifle your laughter. You couldn’t help it, Jean was so cute when she was serious! “I’m fine, but those flats you brought do sound quite nice. Maybe at the next wedding I’ll plan to wear something more convenient next time.”
Jean smiled and slipped on the pair of flats she brought along delicately on your feet. Almost reenacting a whole Cinderella scene with you as she was so gentle and cautious with sliding the piece of footwear on. “Perhaps. But if you ever forget again, I’ll always have an extra pair just in case.”
She looked up at you with those adoring, blue eyes before her attention was taken away from the various cheers and squeals of women. All surrounding the bride of the wedding like some sort of weird formal rave. The bride was positioned at the top of the stage with her back turned to the crowd of cheering women, all eager with their hands in the air as they waited for her to throw the objects in her hands.
A bouquet.
“Oh! They’re doing the bouquet toss!” You fawned. “Jean, do you think I…?”
She smiled warmly at your indication and nodded. “Of course, you still qualify for a bachelorette after all.” Though that word left a bitter taste in her mouth. “Go on. I’ll be waiting right here for you.”
You beamed at this response and quickly kissed her cheek before running off, much faster now that you were no longer wearing heels. Jean couldn’t help but smile brightly at how excited you were to partake in such a funny little wedding tradition. I mean, catching a bouquet to indicate who’s next in marriage? It was a silly idea, yet Jean couldn’t help but let her mind take off with the concept in mind.
You married to her.
Jean would be lying if she said she never thought of the idea of marriage. The two of you had been together through thick and thin, dealing with any and every obstacle together as if you shared a single body. She always thought she was destined to lead the nation of Mondstadt alone, but when you came along, she finally realized just how important –and fun– it would be to have someone who loved her in her life. Someone who wanted to share the rest of their life with her.
And she wanted to spend the rest of hers with them too.
An erupt of screams snapped her out of her thoughts. The swarm of bachelorettes clearing to make way for the lucky woman in the middle. ‘I can’t see her.’ Jean thought worriedly. ‘Was she trampled by the others? Y/N–!’
Standing up from her seat, Jean froze when she heard your shout.
“Jean!” You shouted from the crowd, your voice far from distress as it sounded more like happiness.
“Y/N?” The crowd parted like the Red Sea to show you standing in the middle. The lights from the wedding cascading a heavenly glow in your smile when you turned around. Bouquet of roses in hand.
“I caught it!” You shouted, a broad smile on your face as your fellow bachelorettes cheered for your win. “I caught it, Jean!”
Indeed you did, but Jean didn’t have it in her to respond. Simply staring at you with the deepest blush ever, as all she could think about was you in a wedding dress, getting married to her and smiling through a thin veil that masked your everlasting beauty. Jean couldn’t talk. She couldn’t fathom. And yet when she sees you jumping around excitedly with the bouquet in hand, a burst of serotonin tells her ‘yes, you can marry this girl. She caught the bouquet to marry you.’ And Jean realizes that she can marry the girl of her dreams, and she will.
‘Even in a dress that isn’t white, you look more like a bride to me than any woman in this room…’

EULA LAWRENCE
Tumblr media
Eula never really liked weddings. From all the weddings she was forced to partake in as a child, they were always the same, stuffy, boring weddings that bored her to death and made her loathe such events whenever she were invited to one. Weddings to her were just an excuse for the Lawrence clan to gather up as one big group, and act like assholes once more until Eula couldn’t stand it. It’s come to the point where every time a wedding is even mentioned, Eula would flinch and think back to all the bratty adults she had to listen to while stuck at a table with barely edible food.
Though, this time the wedding she was invited to wasn’t as sufferable as she thought. For one, her clan wouldn’t be related to the event at all, and two, you were there; her loving and doting girlfriend that begged her to go as your date. And how could she not? After all, she did look quite attractive in formal wear.
But you…you. You were another story. When you came out for Eula to pick you up she was beyond smitten. Barely able to get her words across as you laced your arms with hers and made your way to the carriage so that you could be taken to the wedding venue. Even then, Eula could not get a word out!
But she could now.
“The bride is honestly so beautiful. I think her dress was imported from Fontaine.” You pushed around one of the fancy looking dishes that you were served and turned to Eula for her opinion. “Do you think I could order a dress as good as that? Ah, but the shipping…I’d need to save more mora…”
“You do not need a dress to enhance your beauty.” Eula crossed her arms, almost appearing mad as she furrowed her brows. “Just being with me has always been a treasure.”
A beat of silence passes by and Eula quickly unfolds her arms. “H-However, if you want a dress from Fontaine I will gladly order it for you if you wish.” The higher pitch in her voice gave away her frenzied panic, and you couldn’t help but giggle in response.
“You’re always so sweet to me, Eula. So charming even when you’re being silly.”
“I am not being silly.”
She all but huffed that response like a steam engine about to explode, causing you to burst out into a fit of giggles and prod a tiny smirk onto the bluenette’s face. “Oh Eula, this is why I love you so.”
‘And I love you too.’
A bunch of screaming women cut your moment short as you both turned to see the ravenous swarm of desperate singles reaching to try and catch the bride’s bouquet, as she was standing far off to the side ready to launch the flowers in the air. Who would’ve thought that so many women were desperate to get married in Mondstadt? Apparently here was your answer.
‘Such a foolish tradition.’ Eula thought, frowning at the sight. ‘Letting a mere bouquet of flowers decide when you get married? How odd.’
“Ah, the bouquet toss!” You exclaimed joyfully, “I’ll be back my love, I want to join in on the festivities too!”
You ran off to join the crowd of desperate women and Eula couldn’t help but be surprised by your actions. Were you really going to engage in such an activity? Eula couldn’t help but be curious.
You stood yourself in the far back and put your hands up adorably as you weren’t as ravenous as the other singles in the crowd. The other women fighting for their spot to shine, while you bounced on your heels for some extra height in order to strengthen your chances. Ouch, that was cute. Eula glanced at the wall to hide the overbearing smile stretching over her face. Too much for the knight to take.
“It’s mine!” Several women called out. The bouquet bouncing along aggressive hands before making its way to the back and landing right into your hands. Holy Barbatos you did not expect that.
“Woah—!” You stumbled with the bouquet for a second before holding it firmly in your arms. “I…I caught it! Eula, look! It landed!”
She turned to the sounds of your cheering and audibly gasped when she saw you running over with the bouquet in hand. Leaving a trail of sad, single women to disperse as you came home as the lucky champion of the evening. “It just crowd-surfed and landed in my hands! Isn’t that interesting? It’s almost like it’s fate!”
Fate.
Eula stared at how excited you were to win such a tradition and watched as you plucked a flower from the bunch and held it out to her. “For my lady,” you joked in an over dramatic voice, bowing like a dame and presenting the rose as a gesture of romance.
“All that for a flower,” Eula scoffed, though she took the flower from your hands and twirled it, a small smile reaching her lips. “Thank you, I will treasure it.”
“Of course, it’s extra special since it’s from a bouquet I caught. Maybe it’s destined for us to get married next, hm?”
Although a playful little jab at the bluenette, Eula couldn’t help but wonder if the destiny was real. The way the bouquet bounced off the other hands and just landed in your arms was a bit odd in her eyes. Maybe it was just the fate of destiny that brought the bouquet to you. Who knows, perhaps Barbatos had blessed the winds to carry the bouquet towards you, gifting you with the reward of changing fate tonight.
Eula’s cheeks flushed. But what would mean you and Eula would be getting married next! Marriage! As in wife and wife, officially together in legal documents and last names!
She turned to you and saw you playing idly with the roses plucked straight from the bouquet. Twirling the thorn-stripped stem in your hand before pinning the ornament behind your ear. ‘Beautiful.’ Eula thought. And for a second she forgot all her worries and wondered if a dress could enhance your beauty even more. A wedding dress.
‘Perhaps weddings aren’t too bad. As long as it’s a wedding between you and I.’

MONA MEGISTUS
Tumblr media
Let’s be honest, Mona really only agreed to attend the wedding simply because she got to eat free fancy food. That, and it was also an excuse to have a free fancy dinner date with you, something she unfortunately bashes herself over as she’s not able to treat you to the fanciest places all the time.
As snootish as Mona can be, she really beats herself up over not being the perfect girlfriend for you all the time. Sitting here with you at an expensive wedding with couples in their fancy clothes made her realize just how pathetic she really was when in comparison to the bride and groom. The fact that they could afford all of this, all the food, the decorations, the people, and look so content with themselves just made Mona feel as if she could never live up to those standards. I mean, how could you even love her when she couldn’t even afford basic roses? She couldn’t even treat you right, let alone love you properly.
Why do you even stay with her?
“Is something on your mind, my love?” You murmured out of concern.
“Hm? Oh, I was just marveling at the taste of this salad. The dressing is nothing like I’ve ever tasted.” You chuckled over her enthusiasm for salad. Mona always seemed to be some sort of salad connoisseur whenever you’d go out to eat, and her love for such a simple palette made her all the more cuter. “Is it really that good? I thought I made a pretty good salad at home.”
Mona rolled her eyes playfully and stabbed a piece of tomato. “Your salad is…on par. That is a compliment considering this was made by a professional chef.”
You feigned a look of hurt before giggling and going back to your meal. The loud sounds of songs and people dancing drowning out as all Mona could listen to was the sound of you enjoying yourself. You seemed so content, so at ease, and all Mona could think about was how to afford all of this if she wished to spend her future with you.
And she really, really did.
“You keep staring at me with those wide, unblinking eyes.” You scrunched up your shoulders at the sight. “It’s creepy.”
“What? Am I not allowed to stare at my own girlfriend?” Mona scoffed dramatically. “I really thought loving you meant I could admire you for as much as I pleased. Can I not?”
“It’s just weird, you’ve never been so laser-focused on my face before.” You bashfully laughed. “Are you really okay? You seem so out of it this evening.”
“Of course I’m okay. I just like watching you.”
“That’s so creepy taken out of context.”
“I’m not creepy!”
Mona swatted at your arm and you couldn’t help but stifle your laughter as she tried so hard to defend her honor. Her cheeks mirroring that of a hamster’s as they puffed up like tiny balloons out of frustration. “Honestly, what did I even see in you back then? The stars are truly strange for pairing me up with you as my soulmate.”
“Sure, blame the stars for falling head over heels for me. Klee told me about how you’d pray to the stars every night that I was single.”
“I– buh– KLEE–!”
“Hah…Don’t be too hard on the girl, Mona. If it weren’t for her, I wouldn’t have had the courage to confess to you.” You took note of the pink starting to glow on the astrologist’s ears. For someone so “high and mighty” as she so often claimed, she really couldn’t hide her own embarrassment well. “Come on, let’s lighten up a bit, Mona. We’re at a wedding, let’s go enjoy ourselves.”
“...I suppose you’re right, darling.” Mona huffed. “Now, I believe I owe you a slow dance for–”
Suddenly a bouquet slammed itself into your head and landed right on top of your lap. The both of you shrieking like little girls as you had no idea what just happened until you fully registered what you were hit with.
“AAAAAAA wait wait–! Mona, stop screaming! It’s just the bride’s bouquet! Mona I’m okay don’t scream–!”
You lifted the bouquet of pink up to your face to show Mona and smiled charmingly with a facefull of flowers. “It’s just the bouquet Mona! Somehow I managed to catch it!” Mona was still shell-shocked to fully register that you were okay. “I caught it! I caught the bouquet with my face and I didn’t even try!”
Ignoring the depressed wails of the unlucky women who weren’t as lucky as you, you got out of your chair and went over to hug Mona, who was now finally starting to wake up from her daze.
“Mona, do you know what this means?!”
“Huh? What–?”
“We can get married next!”
MARRIED?!
You squeezed Mona so hard she swears she saw the stars on the ceiling. Yet despite the bone-crushing hug you gave her all she could think about was that you caught the bouquet, and in Mondstadt traditions that meant that you were next in line to get married next. You while you were dating her.
‘Married? Y/N wants to get married next? With me? Why?!’ If Mona’s eyes could spin they would. Too overloaded with information to comprehend the thought.
“How wonderful this is, it seems like we were blessed with fate huh?” You joked. Though, when it came to fate, Mona never joked around. “I can’t wait to potentially spend the rest of my life with you…”
The astrologist tensed up at your words before softening in your hold. You quickly kiss her forehead before running off to show your lucky surprise to your friends, leaving your girlfriend standing by your table in both shock and dumbstruck love for you. ‘She really wants to spend the rest of her life with me…’ Mona pondered, heart beating against her ribcage as she grasped the edge of the table for stability. “Hah, I was worried for nothing…”
She looked over at you flaunting your accidental bouquet catch to various guests and smiled as you seemed so happy with the implications of having such a lucky catch. The astrologist sitting back at your table and watching you quietly from afar just as she did back when she pined for you all those years ago.
‘I suppose I don’t need an expensive wedding to make you happy. Just us being there makes it worth a whole fortune.’

“Come on Malik!! Say mommy…mommy…”
Lisa cooed effortlessly at the young child sitting in front of her as he stared quizzically at his mother for making such weird noises with her mouth. Opting to just smile and gently smack at her face with his palms and making the poor librarian groan as he started kneading her cheeks like dough. Not having a clue in the slightest about what his mother wanted him to do.
“Pfft, he slapped you,” you pointed as a matter-of-factly, mug of coffee in hand as you took a quick sip and went to go join your wife on the rug. “Has he said anything yet?”
“Hah…no…” Lisa grumbled as her son just flopped on his back without a care in the world and started sucking on one of his teething toys, “He seems more interested in sucking rather than speaking. As you can see…”
She gestured to Malik practically demolishing the duck-shaped toy with his canines, giggling all the while the duck was in pain. “I give that rubber ducky two days max with him…” Lisa chuckled, rubbing her child’s stomach with affection. “Any longer and we’d have to plan a ducky’s funeral…”
You giggled at your wife’s words and tried to ignore the image of your ever growing pile of demolished toys that needed to be thrown out. Thanks to your son’s super ability to shred anything with just his gums alone, you had to go back to the store this weekend for more.
Pushing the thought aside for now, you let yourself indulge in the quiet afternoon with your wife and baby, cooing affectionately towards Malik and playing small games with him and whatever toys he had left that haven’t been chewed. It was nice, having a domestic time like this with your family and having absolutely no interruptions or anything to possibly disrupt this time of bliss.
It was really, really nice…
Until your wife jinxed it.
“Malik, Malik, mommy, come on dear I know you can say it! Say mommy!”
“Really Lisa?”
You gave her an unamused look and your lover only sideways-grinned at you in response. “I thought you said the bet was off.”
“Well, now it’s back on again,” she flashed you a coy smile as she tickled under her son’s chin, making him giggle. “Mommy, come on Malik…! You can say it dear!”
“Oh heck no…” you quirked up a smirk of your own and tapped Malik’s cheek to redirect his attention towards you, “Malik! Malik sweetie, say mama…mama…”
Your son turned towards you and smiled when you smiled. Seeming to enjoy the attention he received from both mothers and squealing when the two of you tapped and tickled at his face.
“Look at that smile!”
“Almost absolutely no teeth and yet he still looks just as handsome!”
Malik seemed to love all the attention and compliments you fired off the bat and gripped at both your fingers with his chubby hands. Smiling and laughing just like a baby should, but not saying a word despite the latter being what you two wanted the most
“Ah…pooh, nothing?” Lisa pouted, “All that fuss and not even a fragment of a word…”
“Oh, don’t be like that Lisa,” you cooed, kissing the side of her forehead lovingly, “It’s okay to lose sometimes…”
“Puh— Lose?!” She stared at you in disbelief and threw one of Malik’s slobbered on baby toys at you, “He didn’t say either, which means we both lost, cutie.”
She laughed as you tried to squirm away from the slobbery baby toy and winced, trying to wipe away any substance of drool off your shirt and smearing it back on your wife.
“Hey!”
“Marriage has made you evil,” you snickered, “Well, eviler. Considering all you did to me back when we were dating— HEY—!”
“You minx!” She laughed as she threw a stuffed giraffe at your face, your son going absolutely ballistic as you continued to throw toys and stuffed animals at each other like school children.
“Witch!”
“Minx!”
The two of you burst out into fits of laughter as each of you tried to pin the other to the ground and throw toys at one another to get back at them. Malik having the time of his life watching his moms duke it out, and clapping along to their squeals of laughter while waiting for a victor to emerge.
Unfortunately for little Malik, there was no victor in the end as the doorbell rang, signaling that someone was at the door.
“Hah! I won— MMPF?!”
“Hush now cutie, someone’s at the door,” Lisa smirked as she pressed a finger against your lips to shut you up. “Now be a good girl and get off so that I can see.”
She patted at your thighs and you knew at that moment that you really didn’t win against your wife. I mean, sure you were on top of her now but were you really?
“I…ugh, yes ma’am…” you turned away from her in an attempt to hide your hot face and got off of her as soon as you could. Your wife smiling at your obedience and lightly tapping your cheek with her palm as a reward. “Good girl. Watch Malik for me while I see who’s at the door, hm? Maybe clean up his toys while you’re at it.”
She blew you a kiss and you swear you could blow out steam from your ears.
“Evil woman…” you scoffed, scooping up Malik into your arms and staring deep into his eyes. “You won’t be as evil as mommy will you? Archons I hope not…”
Malik just gave you a cheeky grin and blew a slobbery raspberry at you. Your face scrunching up as you held him away from your face to keep clean. “Never mind…it seems that you’re Lisa’s boy alright.” You made a fake gagging noise with your throat and Malik giggled in accomplishment.
“Auntie Y/N! Auntie Y/N!” The high pitched squeals of little Klee filled the room as a small weight collided into you from behind. Sure enough, the little elf girl was situated behind you and was now hugging the back of your legs as we speak.
“WOAH—! Klee?!” You nearly jumped before realizing that you were still holding Malik. Forcing your body to ground itself as you caught your footing and looked behind you. “Klee? Is that you?”
“Yes yes yes it’s me!” Her cheery voice exclaimed, “Do you have Malik? Can I see him? Oh please oh please can I?”
“Forgive us for coming in on such short notice…”
Your head turned to see none other than acting grandmaster Jean waltzing into your living room as your wife Lisa followed close behind. A sheepish smile playing on the dandelion knight’s lips as she rubbed the back of her neck in hesitation. “You see, Klee just wanted to see Malik again so she could introduce him to Dodoco. She kept begging and begging…the only solution really was to go today…”
Jean laughed sheepishly. “I hope you don’t mind?”
You smiled and shook your head. “Of course not! Malik has been in a very playful mood actually, so this would be perfect for him!”
“Auntie Y/N! You have him in his arms! Can I hold him? Please please pleaseeee?”
Now noticing the small baby in your arms, Klee raised her arms up to indicate that she wanted to hold him. Puppy-dog eyes showing that she was practically begging for you to say yes.
And I mean, how could you not?
“Let’s sit down first,” you smiled softly, sitting down on the carpet while Klee followed pursuit, “Now hold your hands out like this…” you began fixing the position of her arms with one hand before gently setting little Malik onto her lap.
You’ve never heard Klee gasp so hard.
“Master Jean! Master Jean! I’m holding him! I’m holding Malik!”
“Please be careful Klee…” Jean had the look of a worried mother, “Are you sure this is alright with you?”
“Of course it is,” Lisa chuckled, setting a hand upon her best friend’s shoulder, “You act like my child is made of glass, Jean. I’m offended.”
Your wife playfully jabbed her and then motioned for you and Jean to sit on the couch. Most likely to talk and catch up all the while making sure Klee didn’t accidentally drop Malik on the floor.
“Make sure to support his head,” you called out to Klee, her only response being a thumbs up before calling “I will!” And grabbing a few toys to play with him.
‘Ah…what a sweet older sister figure…’
“So, how has life with the baby been,” Jean started as a conversation starter, “Has he said his first word yet?”
“Sadly, no…” Lisa sighed, her hand going over to hold yours. “Ever since we adopted him from Sumeru he hasn’t even said anything close to a vowel. I’m beginning to get worried…”
“I’m sure it’s nothing to get nervous about,” Jean smiled reassuringly, “He’ll speak when he’s ready. After all, he is still a baby.”
You heard the laughter and giggles of little Malik on the carpet as Klee waved a Dodoco in front of his face. Luckily not an explosive one, as this one was all plush and no powder.
“Sigh, I suppose you are right…” Lisa hummed whilst stroking your hand. “We’ve just been so antsy lately in wondering what his first word is going to be. In fact…Y/N and I even set up a bet to see if he would say ‘mama’ or ‘mommy’ first. And so far? Nothing yet…”
“Yeah, but he’s totally going to say ‘mama’ first. It’s way easier than what you picked,” you grinned cheekily, your wife’s lips quirking slightly before dropping, “Puh! In your dreams!”
Jean smiled at your old couple-y banter and chuckled when the two of you started lightly hitting each other. Batting at each other like cats in a bath before Lisa started pinching the bridge of your nose in retaliation.
“Ow!”
“Oh please, you should’ve seen that coming, given that I know all your weak spots.”
“Despicable.”
You blew a raspberry at her —now Lisa knows where Malik learned to do that— and winced when she glared at you for clearly pushing your boundaries with her.
“…Sorry.” You mumbled, your wife instantly brightening up and kissing your cheek. “It’s alright.”
“Ahem.”
You both turned to see Jean smiling nervously on the couch. “As much as I love witnessing your back and forth banter, I do feel as if I’m being a third wheel, yes?” Jean laughed. “You two sure never lost the spark though, the same old teasing shenanigans from many years ago never died…”
“Hmpf, at any age, Lisa will always be evil,” you stated without missing a beat.
“Well, at any age, Y/N will always fall prey to my advances,” Lisa countered right after.
“Ugh. See?” You gestured to your wife, who only giggled like the evil woman that she was.
“Hehe, of course I see, after all, I’ve been friends with Lisa ever since—”
“Auntie Y/N! Auntie Lisa!”
Poor Jean never got to have a word in before your conversation got cut short by Klee. You shooting her a look of pity before turning to see Klee waddling over with baby Malik in her arms.
“Ah! Careful Klee! You shouldn’t walk with Malik on your own!” Jean shot out of her seat before you or Lisa could reach her, and helped support the baby’s weight even though he wasn’t in any real danger of falling
“But but but Master Jean!” Klee stammered out quickly, “Malik said his first word!”
“HE SAID WHAT?” Both you and Lisa shouted at the same time, leaping off the couch and instantly getting up close and personal with Malik.
“Oh my goodness! Malik, you said your first word?” Lisa cooed excitedly, playfully pinching the little one’s cheeks, “Ohh mommy’s so proud!”
“Not as proud as me!” You fired back laughing, making Malik laugh twice as much as you smiled brighter than any summer sky, “You said mama didn’t you? Awww good boy, I knew you loved me more!”
“Please, there’s no way he said mama as his first word! Malik baby what did you say? Say it again for mommy! Come on Malik! Come on!”
All four of you sat down on the carpet with Malik still sitting in Klee’s lap. Jean being equally excited as you two as she clapped excitedly for the reveal. “Oh this is so exciting! I’m so excited for you two!”
“Go ahead Malik! Say what you said to me earlier!” Klee cheered, holding up the young infant with her arms.
“Mmh—!” The three of you gasped when Malik opened his mouth wide. “Aaahh…”
“Oh archons he’s really going to say it!”
“What’s it gonna be Malik? Mama or mommy?”
“Aaahhhh…BOMBS!”
You, Jean and Lisa all blinked in unison. Huh…?
“Bombs!” Your son cheered out again, laughing when Klee nuzzled into him from behind. “Bombs! Bombs! Bombs!”
Though muffled through his lack of teeth, the word itself was still made evidently clear. Your son’s first word was bombs, a weapon of mass destruction.
“Ohh Barbatos…” Jean mumbled apologetically, watching as Klee giggled with delight and hugged her baby cousin closer than ever.
“I’m so proud of you Malik! I was just explaining to him that Dodoco was similar to the Jumpty Dumpties that I had…and said that they were bombs! Then, his eyes got SUPER wide, and then his mouth opened and he yelled “BOMBS!” Super loud! It was so cute!”
Klee’s explanation —although adorable— was a bit frightening to say the least as it had finally comprehended in your brain that Klee had taught your child how to say “bombs.” Not mama, mommy, or anything relatively innocent, nope. Just…bombs.
“…Well,” Lisa was the first one to snap out of her stupor, “What an interesting first word that is…” she giggled.
“I suppose we both lost the bet then, huh?” You smirked at her, watching as she slowly matched it to mirror yours, “Unfortunately.”
“Oh Klee…” Jean groaned like the tired mother that she was. “I’m so sorry you two, I didn’t think Klee would teach Malik such a…peculiar first word. Apologies…”
“Oh no! It’s totally alright Jean!” Your wife grinned, “Now my wife and I could stop bickering about this topic, and bicker about another!”
“Really?!”
Lisa just shrugged and smiled at you before getting down to play with Malik. “Yes, really. But let’s push that aside for now and celebrate our son’s first word!”
Tickling the tip of his nose, Lisa beamed and gently scooped him up out of Klee’s arms. “Let’s all go out for dinner tonight! On me! Jean, Klee, would you two like to join us?”
“Well, I suppose it’s fi—”
“Yes yes yes thank you Lisa! Thank you!”
Klee squealed while clutching Dodoco and spun in circles around your living room. Clearly excited about these newfound plans.
“Dinner, huh?” You grinned, “And you’re paying?”
“Just this once because I love you,” she teased, “And because we have guests tonight.”
“Hmpf, how thoughtful,” you snickered, reaching to grab your bag as Jean and Klee were already halfway out the door. “Say…what do you say we bet on something else now that this one is off the table.”
“What do you suggest?” Lisa purred smoothly as she fixed Malik’s growing tufts of hair.
“Hm, whoever he walks to first gets to be pampered by the loser?”
“Oho..! You are so on.” Lisa smirked, kissing you on the forehead before leaving to follow you out the door.
“And I intend on winning it.”

JEAN GUNNHILDR
Tumblr media
“Phew, that should be the last of it…”
Adding the last paper to the pile, Jean stretched meticulously and popped every last cramp she felt in her body. The day having turned to tomorrow as both you and Jean stayed overtime to finish some big important reports for next Monday’s meeting. For Jean, this was just another average weekday night, but for you, it was a bit more to chew than you could swallow.
“Ready to clock out my love?” Jean sighed as she rolled her wrists around in relief, pausing when she heard no response, “Dearest?”
Turning around in her rolling chair, her eyes softened when she saw you passed out at your desk. Hunched over a pile of unfinished paperwork as a small trail of drool threatened to leak itself onto the documents. Normally, Jean would be fearful for those files’ lives but she just couldn’t get over how cute you looked in that moment.
I guess this is what happens when your boss is also your wife.
“Oh…my love…” Jean smiled sheepishly and carefully made her way over to you. Brushing a small lock of your hair away from your face as she gingerly wiped the trail of drool. “So messy…”
Watching as your shoulders rose and fell with each breath of your lungs, Jean finally managed to snap herself out of her lovestruck trance and finally shake you awake.
“Dearest, you can’t sleep like this, it’s bad for your back…” she chuckled when your nose scrunched up with annoyance. “Alright then, I suppose this leaves me with no other choice…”
Your eyes snapped open when you felt your whole world shake into motion, startling you awake as you instantly latched onto the closest thing around you.
Jean.
“Jean what’re you—!”
The soft side of Jean had come out surprisingly. After a long and tiring day of work, you hadn’t expected your wife to bring out the golden retriever in her. (Which you didn’t even know she had!)
“I’d rather have my wife sleep in a bed tonight, Mrs. Gunnhildr,” she grinned playfully as she held you bridal style in her arms. “Is that alright with you?”
“I…I suppose…” in all honesty you were too dumbfounded to reply with anything else. Just in awe at how absolutely JOYFUL you were to have married such an incredible woman.
“Thank goodness…” your wife sighed, readjusting her hold on you to make sure you were secure. “It is time for us to retire my love. Tomorrow— er, this morning I will make sure you are well rested by the time you feel ready to wake up. I will prepare a plentiful meal for us to enjoy, and we could—“
“You don’t have to do that Jean…” you yawned, slowly drowsing off to her soft footsteps exiting the building.
“But dearest, you’d always love when I’d cook breakfast for the two of us, no?”
You giggled tiredly at her concerned puppy-like face, reassuring her with a small stroke to the cheek as she leaned in to your touch. “You know how I love your meals, Jean, but I meant that…”
You buried your face closer to her ear and murmured as softly as you could;
“All I need is you in the morning…”
Your final words before succumbing to sleep kept echoing in Jean’s mind as she walked through the parking lot, placing your tired body in the passenger seat and kissing your brow when she strapped you in.
She didn’t start the car for a while. Just staring at your peaceful face with a smile that could rival the sun.
She’s so glad that she married you.
And she was even gladder when you leaned your head against her shoulder, the soft hum of the engine’s roar filling the silence usually occupied by you.

YELAN
Tumblr media
“Thank you for your oh so generous donation…”
Yelan cackled at the now broke man sitting in front of her as he wallowed in despair over his loss. Running her hands deftly through your hair as you laid slant against her figure in a daze. It was quite late after all, almost morning and your wife definitely noticed how sleepy you were lying slack in her arms.
“Oh, stop crying like a little child. You’re disrupting my wife’s rest, you imprudent little thing…” she tsked at the man for causing you to stir and snapped her fingers for him to be taken away. His cries slowly drowning out from your ears as all you could hear were the soft “shhhs” of Yelan caressing your face. “Tired, my love?” She whispered, smirking when she saw your eyes flutter barely.
“I can stay up..” you yawned, trying to shift out of her grasp but to no avail.
“Mhm…” Yelan chuckled, “That liar’s face can’t fool me…”
She wrapped her arms tighter around you and lifted you up with ease, causing you to flinch as you were forced to koala-cling to her figure.
“Yelan—!”
“Oh wait just a moment!”
She gently set you down despite your flustered face and slid off her jacket to cover you. The smell of rich wine and money emitting from the soft fabric as she bundled it over you like a cocoon.
“There, wouldn’t want my love to catch a cold now, yes?” Yelan chuckled. “Alright, let’s go home.”
Hoisting you up once more despite your pleas —Koala carry style so you could hide your face behind her— Yelan headed out of the casino and towards your expensive-looking car in the back. The once clear night sky now cloudy as it had begun to rain the moment you two stepped out.
“Hmpf, seems like we’re in for a little drizzle,” Yelan smiled, nudging the side of your face with her nose, “Hey, you don’t mind getting a bit wet now do you?”
The tone of her voice made your ears steam up like a cartoon. “Don’t say it like that..!” You groaned. Your bully of a wife laughing to herself before running towards the car playfully.
“Cold cold cold!” You’d murmur in her arms as the cold rainwater sprayed bullets on your skin.
“Hmm, aren’t you glad I swaddled you up my love?”
“Yelan—!”
You were too tired to scold her any further. Deciding that this fight wasn’t worth winning and just deciding to cover your head with her jacket. “Ugh…you’re impossible…”
Yelan grinned at this and used the edge of her heel to open the back door of your car, laying you down with her on top of you as she adjusted her jacket into a makeshift blanket.
“Impossibly in love with you my dear,” she kissed the top of your head, “Sleep peacefully, the back is all reserved for you until we get back home.”
As your eyes slowly drifted to a steady haze, you comprehended the sounds of Yelan getting into the driver’s seat and stroking your hair from the front. Humming a melodious tune that slowly lulled you into a deep slumber as the rain pattered down against the roof of your car.

BEIDOU
Tumblr media
“C’mon Beidou! Just one round of shots!”
The chanting at the table grew louder as Beidou’s co-workers started getting more and more rowdy. Trying to encourage their boss into a drinking competition after she had tried her best not to. Ever since she was wedded to you, she has tried her best to stop her drinking habits for your sake, and so far? She was doing pretty good.
Oh, but one round of shots couldn’t hurt, right? It’s not like she was chugging down bottles of booze.
“Hmm, well, one round of shots couldn’t possibly hurt…” Beidou mumbled playfully, her co-workers all cheering at her sudden shift in mood as they got the glasses stacked and the soju shook.
“Hell yeah Beidou!” One of her friends cheered, “This oughta be child’s play for you!”
Chuckling at their excitement, Beidou picked the glass up with her fingers and was about to touch the glass with her lips when she saw you dozed off in the corner of her eye.
There, slouched off in the corner of the booth was you. Her perfect, beautiful wife sleeping soundly despite the loud cheers and shouts of her rowdy co-workers. Truth be told, Beidou noticed how tired you looked tonight, and it seemed like you had quite the rough day at work. But when Beidou brought up the after work party for her business, you instantly brightened and plastered on a smile, eagerly wishing to go and attempting to have fun despite how absolutely dead you looked.
It was the sight of your tired body that made Beidou separate the glass from her lips.
“Ah…actually, I don’t feel like drinking tonight. Could I get some water please?”
Laughing off her co-workers boos and whines of disappointment, Beidou eventually made her way over to where you were knocked out, and gently kissed your shoulder.
“Hi princess,” she smiled somberly when you stirred, “Wild night huh? Let’s go home.”
Rubbing your eyes tiredly, you yawned and kissed your wife back gently, “Already? Did you have fun?” You murmured softly, reaching for your purse in order to grab your keys.
“(Chuckle) yes, I did. But I’m driving tonight, princess, you could barely keep your head up.”
You swatted her hands away from your bag and frowned, “You can’t drive after consuming alcohol. It’s dangerous.”
Beidou smiled at that accusation and softly gripped your wrists. “True. But a sleepy person could be just as dangerous,” she laughs, “Besides, I hadn’t had a single drop of alcohol since we got here. Wife’s promise.”
Your eyes widened. “You didn’t drink?” You muttered quietly.
Beidou only smiled, “Why drink when I have you to satisfy me.”
Ignoring the blush that now coated your cheeks —or at least not poking fun at it—  Beidou crouched down in front of you and grinned over her shoulder. “So, are we going or not, sweet thing? The restaurant closes in an hour.”
“I…” you genuinely looked shocked at Beidou’s gentlewomanly act, “Y-Yes…Let’s go home.”
As if you weighed nothing at all, Beidou swiftly hoisted you up with her leg muscles and adjusted you so that you were comfortable. The warmth emitting from her body acting like a comforting pillow as you snuggled and buried yourself deeper into your wife.
“No need to worry about a thing, sweetness…” Beidou spoke gingerly, waving goodbye to her co-workers as she stepped out into the briskly night, “You can rest easy when I’m around. And that goes for scenarios like this too.”
Kissing the top of your hands interlocked at her neck, Beidou stopped at your car and smiled at the reflection she saw in the car window. You sound asleep on her shoulder with a small smile etched upon your face.
Truly, you were worth more than any bottle of booze.

VOL 01 of Tragedies of Teyvat
⎯⎯mod angel 🎐
Tumblr media
“River river in the ground, who is the fairest all around?”
As if waiting for a response, Miko swished her tail expectedly and peered in close to the babbling brook below. Her sharp, violet eyes staring deep into her own reflection before softening at the sight of the sheer beauty in front of her.
“Oh, who am I kidding,” Miko grinned deviously and leaned in closer to further examine her face, “The fairest all around could only be me; after all, no mere mortal could ever compare to the perfection that I currently hold...”
Sighing at how utterly perfect she looked in the hazy filter of the river, Miko fluffed up her hair and continued to admire herself on the river’s bank. Acting like a proud cockatoo in the mirror as she kept swaying side to side in order to get a full view of her perfect angles.
“Puh, if only there were someone out there with even half as much beauty as I...”
Totally infatuated with herself, the guuji smirked and traced a finger across the outline of the reflection’s face. The sharp coldness of the river’s waters being yet another reminder that the Miko the guuji saw was just another fake reflection. Not another person of pure beauty such as herself.
“Oh, pooh,” Miko frowned at how her reflection rippled away at her touch, “What a shame...”
Waiting anxiously for the ripples to cede, Miko’s ears perked up once her reflection reappeared again. Happiness showing clear in her eyes as her spine immediately straightened with delight. “There I am,” the guuji cooed, making lovey-dovey heart eyes at her own face, “The Goddess herself, Yae Miko...”
Kicking her feet up in a rhythm to match a lovestruck teen, Miko stared down at the river’s bank for what seemed like ages. Admiring how sleek and mystifying her eyes looked, how her hair blew like pink cirrus clouds during the sunset, how literally everything on her face was just simply too exquisite not to stare at.
Too exquisite, that she ended up staring at her reflection all day.
“Ah...I suppose it’s been a while, I wonder what time it--” Miko begrudgingly looked away from her reflection and gasped when she saw stars coat the once cloudy sky. A stark contrast to the hazy mornings of today, or should I say...yesterday.
“Midnight so soon?” Miko frowned at the high moon shining down at her figure, “I better head back...”
Glancing down at her watery reflection, Miko frowned and watched as the second Miko frowned also. A sight that tugged at her heartstrings despite knowing it was just a water’s reflection. “Oh, please don’t frown...” Miko’s lips quirked up into that of a mischievous smile. “I promise to be back tomorrow.”
As the reflection mimicked her fox-like smile, Miko quickly glanced around before leaning back over to plant a sweet kiss over the water’s edge. Hoping to kiss her own reflection goodnight before having to leave so soon.
Warm lips grazing the contrast of cold water, Miko suddenly lost her balance and ended up flopping overboard. Her face sinking in head first as she quickly swallowed up water in an attempt to scream out for help.
“BLBCJEJIFEKJNFN--”
It did not work.
Thrashing around like she was drowning --because let’s face it, Miko can’t swim-- Miko did the only thing she could do at that time, and that was;
Scream.
Very loud.
“AEUGHUHSHGDH--”
It wasn’t a very pleasant scream, because let’s face it, fox screams are terrifying. But it worked in calling someone to her distress, as the guuji felt a strong pair of arms pull her out of the water to keep her from drowning.
...In two feet water.
“Ow! Ow! Oh archons, you have very sharp nails-- Ow!”
Still thrashing around like a kitten being picked up for the first time, Miko batted hysterically at her rescuer and refused to open her eyes. Lids screwed tighter than a pickle jar as she didn’t want any dirty river water getting into them. Save for the fact that she was already well above the surface by now.
“Who is this? Unhand me if you are some filthy robber! My skin cannot be tainted by the dirt that you have--”
Finally opening her eyes --the haziness of river water and midnight’s blanket making everything foggy-- Miko choked in a gasp once her vision allowed her to take in the majestic creature right in front of her. Rivaling the moon itself as this creature, no-- this person, was the most beautiful thing Yae Miko had ever laid her eyes upon. Even more so than herself.
Was she dead? Was this the archon of the afterlife? Miko blinked drearily and sat there staring at this beautiful person. Did she actually drown while falling into the river? She seemed stunned at the thought. Yes, that must be it! No regular human in Teyvat could ever be more beautiful than her. It was simply not possible!
“Are you okay? Oh, archons, you’re soaked head to toe! You must be freezing!” Miko could barely comprehend the warm towel being placed around her figure as she continued to stare at the person in awe. The haziness of nighttime slowly fading away, as she made out the features of a young woman in place of the beautiful creature she saw before.
“Is that better?”
“Hm?”
Finally snapped out of her trance, Miko readjusted her vision to focus entirely on the woman’s face. A big mistake really because holy cannoli this woman was even prettier with no drowsiness to filter out her beauty.
Translucent water droplets running down her lashes, the woman stared at Miko with a face that put even the purest of nuns to shame. Skin smoother than the touch of silk, eyes wider than the irises of a doe, she was the embodiment of everything beautiful in this world put to one, and even Miko herself knew that.
“...Did I scare you?” No, just the opposite, “I’m sorry, I really should’ve been more gentle with my approach, you must be in some sort of shock right now...”
The woman’s angelic face frowned at how Miko wasn’t responding to any of her questions. Worried for the guuji’s health as she wasn’t sure if she hit her head on a rock or something when she fell.
“Sh-Should I take you to a doctor--”
“Are you an archon?” Miko suddenly blurted out, quickly covering her mouth when she realized what she said.
“...Archon?” The woman’s lips suddenly quirked into that of a humorous smile, “Sorry, I’m just a regular person that just happened to see you drowning. I don’t even have a vision, see?” She gestured to her sides and back to show no evidence of anything god-like. Further confusing the poor kitsune as it was extremely hard to believe that this ethereal being was a mere human.
“S-Surely you must be joking...” Miko’s face twisted into that of a hesitant smile, “You’re...You’re way too stunning to be a human. Be honest, did I drown? Is this Celestia?”
The woman’s brow rose with concern. “No, I saved you. And besides, you wouldn’t have been able to drown anyways if I hadn’t come,” she pointed to the spot where Miko had fallen into, and stuck her arm down to touch the floor of the riverbank, “It’s shallow. At most, two feet deep, you could’ve sat up.”
“...Oh.” Miko’s ears lowered with that of embarrassment and she refused to meet the gaze of her human savior. “It-- It was a lot deeper when I fell in. Mud must’ve sunken in to replace the bottomless pit I fell through.” Too haughty to admit how embarrassing it was to nearly drown in two feet deep water, Miko stuck up her nose and tried to play it off as the truth. When in reality, the woman knew better than to believe her.
“...Alright,” she chuckled at the guuji’s arrogant response and helped her stand away from the riverbank in case she had another fall, “You may keep the towels by the way. They’re clean if you’re worried about the ‘filthy robber dirt’ I apparently have.” The woman giggled at Miko’s sheepish face and watched as she stumbled to push out an apology after being saved.
“I...I am sorry about that,” the guuji mumbled apologetically, “Had I known such a...stunning creature such as yourself were handling me I would not have been so rude.”
The apology --although seemingly reluctant due to the her huge ego-- was enough to make the woman double back in surprise. This was the second time Miko had mentioned her being stunning, and she was wondering if her question of being an archon had any correlation to that.
“You really think I’m stunning?” she asked with surprise.
“Stunning? I’m envious just thinking about describing you!” Miko suddenly lashed. “The fact that you’re just a mere mortal and you-- you look like that!” she gestured to her face abruptly, “Is enough to get me furious!”
Brows knitted together with that of frustration, Miko watched as the woman in front of her sheepishly bit her lip and mumbled, “I’m...sorry...?” As if she had done something wrong.
Sensing her confusion, the kitsune only sighed in response and shook her head. “No...it’s not your fault. I’ve always triumphed in my looks since I thought that I was the most beautiful person in all of Teyvat. But now, I find myself bested by a human who was simply born with good genetics,” Miko sighed and wrapped the towel tighter around her figure, “The fact that you are a pure human just makes you even more beautiful than I.”
Ears cowering to mock that of a whimpering puppy, the woman felt a pang of guilt flutter in her chest, as she tilted Yae Miko’s chin up to face her. The guuji’s eyes widening for a second at the gentle touch, and watering slightly from the beautiful sight in front of her. Too overwhelmed by the soft feel of her hands.
‘Such soft hands...’ Miko pondered, aching to feel even more, ‘Not a callus in sight...’
Gingerly brushing over the woman’s smooth fingers, she smiled and stroked Miko’s cheek endearingly. “I don’t think I’m more beautiful than you,” she murmured gently, “If I had a say in this, I’d say you were very stunning yourself, ma’am.”
Miko’s jaw fell unhinged.
Her? This absolute Goddess thought that she was prettier than her?
The woman chuckled at Miko’s absolutely shocked expression, looking like she had just been struck by lightning a thousand times. “I really do mean it too.”
“But-- wha-- how?!” Miko suddenly grabbed at the other woman’s face, her cheeks heating up with surprise when the guuji pulled her closer to get a better look, “Have you even looked at yourself? By the Archons, how could you be so humble when you have a face like that?!”
The woman blushed at all this extreme complimenting, waving it off as a “I don’t really have time to look at myself too much.” Causing the egotistic kitsune fret with jealousy.
Jealousy? Is that even the right word for this? Miko’s stomach twisted, but her chest felt like it was getting knotted into ropes. Is it truly jealousy that is the case here?
Miko bit her lip, in complete disbelief at how someone with so much beauty wasn’t flaunting it like she knew it. This girl must be blind. She must be insane!
“I’m Y/N, by the way,” a warm voice came.
“Pardon?”
“My name, it’s Y/N,” the woman in front of her smiled and it felt like all the warmth in Miko’s body replenished, “In case you fall into more rivers, come by the L/N estate. We have tons of towels.”
“Oh my...!” the thought of introductions hadn’t struck Miko until now, “Thank you. Please excuse me for not introducing myself sooner. I am Yae Miko, head priestess of the Narukami Shrine.”
“Head priestess? My apologies!” Y/N suddenly bowed as a sign of respectful greeting, “I had no idea, I’m so sorry!”
Now that’s a sight Miko never thought she’d see. Usually it’d be ordinary people bowing at her feet, but to have such a pretty woman do so was something that made Miko flush with surprise. “There...There isn’t much need for that, dearest,” Miko cleared her throat, trying not to think about how she should be the one bowing to Y/N.
“Even so, I should’ve recognized you from the clothing sooner,” Y/N sighed, “I’m sorry I couldn’t find more towels to dry you off with.”
“There is no need,” Miko wrapped the towel even tighter around her, “This one should suffice.”
There was that smile again. The warm one that made Miko feel as if she were sleeping on the sun. Burning alive to a crisp as the blaze burrowing inside her could rival that of a torch itself. Soon to burn brighter and brighter until all you could see, was the sun’s flames burning for Y/N.
‘The purest form of beauty...’ Miko remembered, the mantra echoing inside her head, ‘Is one that comes from the heart...’
And Miko really was looking at the purest form of beauty. A woman as beloved as the sun.
“It’s getting quite late, Guuji Yae. Would you like for me to walk you home?” another kind hand was offered to the kitsune, and the priestess felt as if she were walking alongside the path to Celestia. “I’d be delighted.”
Entwining her hand with hers, the contrast of dry skin to wet, Miko realized that her own beauty would be incomparable to that of the woman beside her. After all, she was only a priestess in comparison to a Goddess, so it only made sense for her beauty to be rivaled by that of someone who lit up her life.
Lightly gripping the soft hand that was Y/N’s, Miko smiled and casually leaned her head upon the shoulder that was hers, watching as her savior and sun of the sky blushed before looking away sheepishly.
‘Simply stellar...’ the priestess wondered, smiling to herself before looking at the Narukami shrine up ahead.
‘I wonder if I should worship a new Goddess...’

CASE FILE. MUSE-009
CLASS. MERMAID
SEVERITY. 3/10
DESCRIPTION. The fishermen of Watatsumi island have been complaining of a mysterious sea creature slashing their nets whenever they go out to fish. Every time they reel the nets up, they always come up empty with nothing but a gaping hole, the faint shimmering of pearlescent pink scales, and no fish. Villagers have taken it upon themselves to call for a monster hunter to remove this unknown creature.

“Ugh, sushi? No thanks.” You waved your hand dismissively at your coworker and eyed the mission board instead. “You go on ahead. I think I’m gonna take another job for some extra cash.”
“You sure?” Your coworker Thoma only stared at you in disbelief. It had been ages since you last took a break for dinner, and he was half tempted to change his dinner plans to something you did like in order to get you to take a break for once in your life. He can’t help it! He’s worried about your workaholic attitude!
“We could…go to that other restaurant you like so much. Don’t their rice bowls sound tempti–”
“This one!”
Thoma watched as you tore a job listing off the board and smiled with newfound glee. “Heh, ironic you brought up sushi beforehand, Thoma, cuz this job is an aquatic creature.”
“Ah…a merperson?” Thoma broke into a cold sweat at your excitement. “You really want to go to the coast at this time of night?” He worried over you like a mother who couldn’t let go. “No silly, the island I’m going to is at least a day’s trip away, I need to prepare some equipment tonight before I go.”
“Oh phew. So you can go to dinner tonight?” Poor Thoma sounded like an excited puppy.
“What? Dinner?” You literally laughed out loud at his statement. “Oh Thoma, you jokester!”
Thoma was in fact, not joking.
“Y/N don’t give me that tone, you haven’t had a decent meal in over six months!” He held up six fingers to further accentuate his statement. “Everytime I come over to your place you’re always munching on those smiley face fries, or snacks you bought at the corner store. It’s not healthy!”
You stared at Thoma’s outburst and frowned.
“I like those smiley face fries.”
“No!”
Thoma grabbed your hand with the paper and balled it up in his fists. “Listen, if you let me treat you to dinner this once, I promise I’ll come over and help set up your equipment for this job.”
“Gaaaaaaasp. Really?” Wow, Thoma really is the ultimate best friend. “Deal! Also I’m ordering the most expensive thing there.”
“As long as you eat properly…” Thoma sighed. “Now let’s go get this job approved for you.”

The journey to Watatsumi island was a short yet very tedious one. It required you to rent a motorboat off the pier and sail yourself to the secluded fishing village of Watatsumi island on your own. The waves did not seem to want to work in your favor as your tiny little motorboat was tossed back and forth for the past few hours and caused you to become sick upon reaching Watatsumi’s docks. Your poor, iron-stomached bravado being torn to mere shreds as you got off your dingy little boat with legs wobblier than a newborn lamb. Locals of the village looking at you in pity with how green your face looked upon arrival.
“Thank goodness! You must be the monster hun–”
“Yeah yeah just give me a second…”
You screwed your eyes shut whilst you got your equipment off the boat. Willing the seasick headache to go away as you had a job to do and the quicker you did it, the quicker you could get off this island.
“Erm, do you need some help, miss?” One of the men at the dock asked timidly.
“Sigh. Half this stuff can explode and half this stuff can poison you. I’d rather not risk a dead man on my name after this.” You seemed so tired already after your time at sea and you didn’t even get to see what kind of monster you were dealing with. “Just let me handle this, I’m a professional.”
“O-Of course Miss monster hunter.”
Upon getting the last briefcase off your barely functional rowboat, you exhaled a sigh of relief and looked around at the shoddy fishing village before you. The whole place not looking too good as it looked like it went through fifty rounds of thunderstorms before you got there.
‘I thought they were only suffering from a major food crisis…’ you pondered, taking in how the dock itself had holes in it. ‘Not good. The whole place is practically falling apart.’
“I thought the Watatsumi fishing village was a prosperous one…?” you voiced out loud, eyes widening when one of the ceiling tiles of a nearby shop fell off. Holy cannoli, this place was held up by toothpicks!
“It used to be,” the timid man from before sighed. “But then we ran out of fish to sell on the mainland. Our main source of income now is whatever we can sell from our homes.” Your nose scrunched up at this reveal and you couldn’t help but feel guilty for lashing out at him earlier. “The situation has gotten this out of hand?” You watched as people began loading up wagons with household furniture to sell.
“Unfortunately.”
‘All this just because of one pesky sea monster…’ you scoffed and grabbed your stuff to head for the motel. ‘How annoying.’
“Timid boy,” you called for him to come and gestured to your bags beside you. “Take my stuff to the inn. I’ll be doing some investigating before taking any course of action.”
“B-But I’m not a bellhop!”
You threw a small sack of coins behind you and watched from your peripheral vision as he stumbled to catch it. “You are now. That should pay you plenty.”
“Ah–! Miss monster hunter!”
“Don’t worry! I’ll be back soon!” you waved your hand dismissively and made your way deeper into town. The poor man left to handle your equipment, even though you said not to earlier.
‘B-But she said they could explode and poison me…!’

“Over here is the cove where we do most of our fishing.”
After wandering around and speaking to a few fishermen, they led you to a wide cove on the edge of Watatsumi and showed you the damages caused to their nets by the unknown anomaly. “As you can see, these nets that were casted out not too far from here were violently slashed to threads after just being underwater for a minute. I mean, what could cause such destruction?!”
“May I see the nets for myself, Mr. Fisherman?”
“Do as you please, you’re the expert after all.”
He handed you one of the tattered nets and watched as you inspected it closely, catching bits of shimmering pink scales caught in the threads of the thick rope. ‘Hm…these scales…’ you plucked one off its knot and held it up closer to the sun. ‘Pearlescent, light in color, nearly translucent, rounder…’
You chuckled and handed the scale over to the fisherman. “You’re lucky this creature isn’t too serious. It’s not a siren or sea serpent of any sort, just a young merperson.”
“A merperson? You could tell?” The fisherman seemed in awe at your professionalism. “Of course, I can even tell that the merperson we’re talking about here is a young one. Judging by the scales, they’re much firmer and smoother compared to older merfolk who have brittle and rougher scales.”
“Wow, you’re incredible!” The fisherman boisterously laughed. “I woulda assumed it was some sort of rainbow fish judging from the glittery pink.”
You shrugged and gestured to the pile of discarded nets behind, trying not to let your ego get the better of you. “Can I check the other nets too? I need to ensure that it’s the work of either one merperson or a whole pod.”
“Pod?!”
You ignored his surprise and walked over to pick up one of the discarded nets, holding them up to examine the scales and sure enough, they were light pink and shimmery just like the one you plucked. ‘Only one merperson?’ you were amused at the idea of a single merperson doing so much damage to one town. ‘Now this is interesting.’
“S-So?” The fisherman looked anxious at your ongoing silence. “Is it bad?”
“What? Oh no, of course not!” you burst out laughing and tossed the ruined net aside. “I can determine that this is the work of only one merperson. For whatever reason, they moved into the cove and have started slashing your nets for food or whatever reason I’ll come up with later.”
The fisherman exhaled a sigh of relief and patted your shoulder in assurance. “Phew, so you can get rid of it?” he asked with a toothy grin.
“Tch, of course I can!” You flicked his hand off your shoulder and grinned an egoistic smile. “I’ve beheaded literal sea serpents before, this’ll all just be a walk in the park.”
“Hahaha! I knew our village chief would only hire the best of the best!” the fisherman –who was already getting a tad bit annoying to you– slapped your back with a big muscly arm and nearly sent you flying. “Oh whoops! Sorry, I forget my arms can send people flying sometimes. Whoopsies!”
You groaned and waved off his apology to keep searching around the cove for clues. Unknowingly attracting the attention of two curious blue eyes peeking at you from underneath the pier.
‘Scary pretty lady…’ its pupils following you in both admiration and fear.
Tumblr media
After getting a quick walk –not really quick, it took two hours– around the cove and analyzing your area for a bit, you decided that now would be the best time to strike as the sun was high in the air, and the sky was as clear as the water. Wow, the people of Watatsumi really knew how to take care of their waters!
“Agh, I can’t wait to get out of here,” you tossed your equipment in yet another dinghy row boat and went over to untie the ropes latched onto the pier. “Then Thoma can treat me to some more expensive food and I can eat like the queen that I am.”
You began daydreaming about all the restaurants you would drag him to once this job was over, and thought about possibly taking up that vacation week you haven’t used yet to take some quality me time and unwind. Maybe Thoma was right, you did tend to overwork yourself even though you complained often about having to do so much work. You didn’t even understand it yourself yet somehow it always happens.
‘Ugh. I hate when Thoma is right.’ You chewed your bottom lip in frustration when the knot holding your boat in place wouldn’t come undone. ‘But I also wish he were here to help me get this STUPID KNOT UNTIED–’
SPLASH!
Your body froze when you heard a loud splash coming from the water and a wet ‘plop’ coming from the very edge of the dock. The dock you were currently stationed at was one that wasn’t frequently used by the village, so there was practically no one in sight as it was just you, your boat, and whatever just came out of the water just now.
“Wh-What the fu–” your eyes widened when they raised to see a young mermaid woman adoring pastel pink hair to match her equally pastel pink tail. Light blue tips that matched the color of the sky and a soft expression on her face that could mimic that of a doll.
‘IT’S THE MERMAID! THE MERPERSON THAT SLASHED THOSE NETS. THAT PINK TAIL MATCHES–’
You instinctively reached for your dagger on your thigh strap only to wince when something black and spiky launched into your left ankle. Your face drained of any color as your limbs felt weak and limp, paralyzed like something was shutting off all your nerves and forcing your body into hypersleep.
“Wha…What the–” you quickly collapsed at the sight of a black sea urchin stuck in the skin of your ankle, piercing through the cloth with ease and seeping its toxin deep within its veins. “Did you just throw a sea urchin at me?!”
Luckily you could still breathe, otherwise you wouldn’t be able to talk.
“Human women are so pretty…” the mermaid ignored your question before doing the scariest shit possible and slithering towards you with her arms helping her crawl. A scream trapped within your throat as you wanted to keep your pride and dignity intact as a high-ranking monster hunter.
‘I’ve dealt with eldritch horrors, haunted manors, possessive demons and cult-like behaviors. YET A CRAWLING MERMAID FREAKS ME OUT THE MOST–’
You tried willing your arms to pluck the sea urchin off your ankle and kill the woman before she reached you, yet the toxins flowing from the urchin in your leg refused to let your muscles cooperate. Honestly, it felt like you were one of those helpless horror movie protagonists! “Ah shit. I will NOT meet my demise to a low-leveled, pastel princess, glittery pink mermai–”
And then she was on top of you, grabbing your face with her webbed hands and laying all her tail weight onto the lower half of your already limp legs. “Human women also make a lot of noise. Strange.”
You could only stare at her eyes in shock, fear, and confusion as you were half expecting her to tear off your face with her teeth at this point. Which, upon closer inspection, seemed relatively dull despite being of an omnivorous species.
“Ah…of course we do. It’s only normal for humans to scream when in danger…” you were spouting nonsense at this point, wow; you really were scared half to death. Never in your life were you put in such a vulnerable position before, and by a mermaid no less! “Now can you please get off me? I don’t want to die from this…”
“Die? Danger?” The mermaid woman blinked slowly at your words. Almost like a tortoise as she seemed to take a while to comprehend what you were saying. “I don’t understand. I am not dangerous.”
You scoffed and looked down to the sea urchin still stuck in your ankle. “That urchin you threw to paralyze me says otherwise…”
The mermaid turned her head to stare at the creature lodged in your foot before turning back to stare at you some more. “It was a necessary sacrifice. How else am I supposed to get close to you?”
“Close to me?!”
She suddenly nuzzled into your neck, breathing in that dry scent that only humans seemed to carry. “Yes. I’ve been watching you traverse the cove all afternoon. You are one of the prettiest human women I’ve ever seen so I followed you.” She looked up at you again and reached up to pet your hair. “I wanted to touch your hair. It looked nice and soft.”
“Well, you’re doing it now…” you spoke with a shaky sigh as the mermaid fell into comfortable silence on top of you. ‘Hm, she doesn’t seem to be too dangerous, plus she’s capable of decent human speech. Best case scenario is that I can negotiate with her into a relocation. That way I don’t have to go through the effort of killing something again.’
“H-Hey…mermaid woman,” she hummed in acknowledgment but continued petting your hair. “Do you think you can remove the sea urchin in my leg? I want to talk to you.”
Her blue eyes moved down suspiciously, seemingly picking apart your words like a vulture to a carcass. “But you may hurt me. I’m not a threat, but scary lady can be.”
‘Oh so I’m the scary lady.’
“I promise I won’t hurt you,” you sighed, shutting your eyes in the process and lying flat on the ground with your neck bared, a common sign of submission in the monster world. “You can even check me for weapons and remove them if you wish.” ‘No big deal. Once she removes the urchin I’m free to move and defend myself even without a weapon.’
“Really?” the pastel mermaid looked at you with curiosity before unsheathing your dagger from its pocket and holding it up to the sky to examine. “So, I can take this?”
“...Sure.” You winced at how lightly she was handling it. Honestly, a mermaid with a dagger was even more dangerous and you regret ever showing her where you concealed it. “Hm, okay!” she smiled and threw the dagger over the pier while you screamed in agony.
Mental agony.
“Why did you throw it?!” you shouted, tears brimming at the sound of it plopping into the water.
“You said I could remove it.”
“Remove it, not throw it away!”
You were honestly crying at this point. Of all the monsters that could have destroyed your sanity or make you cry, it was a mermaid of all things.
“...Don’t cry.” The mermaid reached a webbed finger up to your lashes and wiped the brimming tears away. “Human women crying sounds awful.”
“Sniff, gee thanks…” your ego was practically nonexistent at this point as you found yourself being comforted by the same mermaid that scared the shit out of you. “That dagger was expensive, you know. It’ll be hard to get another one just like it.”
“...If it makes you feel any better,” the mermaid crawled back to remove the urchin in a quick, painless tug, all sense of relief and feeling flowing back to your veins as your body went back into overdrive. “I’m sorry…”
“Oh my gods…” you felt like you could see the stars once the toxins deployed in your veins had vanished. “I can feel again!”
“I’m sorry…” the mermaid got off you and raised her arms to cover her head. “Please don’t turn me into a fish filet!”
“What? Ew no!” you made a disgusted face at the accusation and recoiled out of cringe. “Why would I want to eat something that is anatomically half human?”
“Eh? But mermaid tails are a delicacy in the monster market,” the mermaid held onto her tail like it was the most precious thing in the world to her. “I heard that monster hunters capture mermaids to sell them to butchers. I don’t want my tail cut off!”
“...Gross.” You stuck your tongue out at the description. “Look, I promise you, I don’t even like seafood. Plus, the thought of mermaid seafood makes me want to gag.” Though you were already gagging.
“...Really?” she looked at you with pretty doe eyes and you had the strange yet tolerable urge to hug her. “I mean it. I just want to ask you a few questions, that’s all.”
“That’s…it?” she looked skeptical and was hesitant to relax her body around you.
“That’s it.” You confirmed, assuming a natural, relaxed stance and letting the creature know that you weren’t a threat. Well not anymore, at least. “Feel free to slither— er, crawl away if you feel uncomfortable.” Hah, that was a lie. Of course you were still going to chase her down, you were a monster hunter and this was your job.
“Oh, alright.” The mermaid leaned back on her tail and stared at you to continue. “I will answer your questions.”
“Good. Can I ask for your name first though? I’d like to put a name to your face as I’m already getting tired of referring to you as “the mermaid.””
“Kokomi.” She answered softly, fiddling with the tips of her hair as she began getting nervous all of a sudden. “Sangonomiya Kokomi.”
“Ko-ko-mi,” you tested out her name on your tongue and smiled when she flinched at your voice. “I like it. It’s cute and it suits you.”
“Ah…thank you…” Her cheeks turned a somber shade of pink as she fiddled with the webbing between her fingers. Eager to get this ‘interview’ over with as she wanted to ask you some questions in return.
“First of all Kokomi, I’m sure you’re aware by now that I am a monster hunter, yes?” Kokomi nodded and ushered for you to continue. “Well, I was hired by this village to get to the bottom of a strange creature who has been slashing the nets of fishermen and letting the fish escape. When I investigated the destroyed nets however, I found these.” You held up a handful of pearlescent pink fish scales from your pocket and smirked, noting how Kokomi froze in place once she saw them. “They are pretty much identical to the scales on your tail, yes? So tell me Kokomi, was the creature who kept slashing the fishing nets your doing–”
“I’m sorry! It is all a misunderstanding!”
Wow, that was quick.
“Hah! So you did do it?” you confirmed. Kokomi’s face all red from the interrogation as she was embarrassed from breaking so easily. “Yes, but I promise it wasn’t for any selfish reasons!”
“How so? Defend your argument!” You were about to go all Ace Attorney on her ass.
“I didn’t eat them! I swear! I just cut the nets so that they can be free! They deserve to be free!”
“What?!’
“Fish are friends! Not food!”
Kokomi’s face had puffed up in pride and anger as she continued to rant about how people shouldn’t eat fish. When she saw her poor fishy friends getting scooped up by giant nets nearby, she just couldn’t help herself! You couldn’t believe it, you pretty much found a vegan mermaid activist!
“You cut them so that the fish can be free…?” you worded slowly, letting her passionate speech sink into your mind. “That’s…it?”
“Yes! I don’t want any more sea creatures suffering!” she huffed, crossing her arms and looking like an angry pomeranian more than anything else. Wow, you can’t believe you let yourself get scared half to death by a monster who didn’t even eat meat. What a stab to your pride.
“But Kokomi, the people of this village need to eat and sell the fish they catch. It isn’t fair to them if you keep depleting their resources.” You gestured behind you to the fishing village not too far away and frowned. “That place isn’t going to last more than six months at this rate. The people will be forced to abandon it.”
“But…” Kokomi frowned and tucked her tail underneath her arms. “My friends…”
Shoot. Are her eyes watering?
“Sorry Kokomi, but it’s unfair to those who need to eat certain things to survive. I’m sure you understand, most merpeople are omnivores.”
The tiny ‘sniff’ coming from Kokomi’s nose made your heart pang with guilt. God, why does this one peculiar monster have to be the reason you cry? It was really making you annoyed. “I know…” Kokomi mumbled, “I just hate seeing them in pain. I can’t help myself!”
And that’s your ticket to a solution.
“What if you didn’t have to see them in pain?” You offered, a smile playing upon your lips as your plan was now set into motion. “Wouldn’t it be nice to live somewhere where you didn’t have to see the fish getting hunted?”
“I’ve thought about it but I don’t want to leave my friends to suffer without me!” Kokomi whined, “Besides, there’s a mean pod of dolphins on the exit of the cove so I can’t even leave! They’re all bullies.”
Ah. Yeah, dolphins are bitches.
“So you’ve tried leaving the cove before?” You questioned.
“Sometimes, but I’m always chased off by that angry pod. A mermaid on her own is no match for a feisty group of mammals like them.” She began picking at her scales and seemed to frown at the memory like a distant flashback. “I actually never lived in the cove in the first place. The dolphins chased me here and kept me here for a while if I recall.”
Hm, so this place isn’t even her home. Everything's just falling into place for you!
“How would you like to go home then?” you smiled, “I was sent here to get rid of the fishing problem and I think I know of a way to help both parties.”
“You can take me home?!” For a moment, Kokomi’s eyes lit up like glow sticks. “I…Wait– you can’t…”
Your brows raised at her sudden shift in tone. “Oh? Why not?”
She pushed her two fingers together and giggled nervously. “Aha…I may have been banned from my group after trying to get everyone off their fish diet… That’s why I left in the first place…”
Oh my God…
You nearly threw yourself off the pier. Ashamed of the fact that THIS was the monster you almost shit yourself over. “You got yourself kicked out for being an over aggressive vegan?” you clarified. “If that’s what I am then yes, yes I was.” She sat there all too innocently as you screwed your eyes shut at such a ridiculously overly-stupid (and cute but you didn’t want to admit it) story. Half tempted to just get up and leave at this point because you were in disbelief at how absurd everything was.
“...Okay, listen up Kokomi. I will help you get out of this cove, only if you agree to stop slashing fishermen nets everytime you see one. Deal?”
“You’ll help me leave?!” she exclaimed excitedly.
“Only if you promise not to disturb the fishermen ever again!” You quickly added. “And remember, you can’t force your beliefs onto other people. So if you join another mermaid group to live with, you cannot, absolutely CANNOT force them to give up their omnivorous diet.”
“...Okay!” Did she really agree that quickly?! “As long as the fish in this cove are safe and protected.”
“Uh…sure…” you bit your lip at yet another blatant lie you just told her. I mean, what she doesn’t know won’t hurt her. “I promise nothing bad will happen to the fish in this cove.”
“Ahhh, thank you scary pretty lady!” Kokomi grinned.
“It’s Y/N.” You corrected, patting her pastel hair before getting up. “Well, tonight is when I plan to finish up this mission, so if you want to go pack up anything before leaving I suggest doing it now.” Kokomi paused for a second before nodding in understanding. “Okay. I’ll be ready by tonight!” she exclaimed. “This is so exciting! I finally get to leave the cove!”
“Yes yes, very exciting. Now, I’ll be here when the sun sets in a few hours, once it’s dark enough I’ll be able to sneak you around through town in order to get to my boat. Sound good?” Kokomi nodded enthusiastically. “Very good! Thank you scar– Y/N. Thank you Y/N.”
“Of course.” You responded, turning your heel before hearing a splash behind you.
Tumblr media
“Careful timid boy, this is precious cargo. If you drop it, I may reduce your tip to only fifty.”
“Dollars?”
“Cents.”
He started handling the giant cooler you two were carrying with much, much more carefulness now. Treating the heavy cooler like it was a giant chest of gold before reaching the docks with your tethered motorboat still attached. “Easy now,” you ordered, carefully placing the cooler onto the boat before wiping off the sweat from your brow. “Phew, you and I make a good team, timid boy. You sure you don’t want to be a monster hunter?”
He shook his head so hard it almost dislocated his neck.
“Hah! That’s alright, you’d make a better bellhop anyways, timid boy.” You got the last of your equipment (that you didn’t even need to use, mind you) onto the boat and started untying the rope holding your boat in place.
“Are you sure the problem has been resolved?” the timid man asked you, “It’s just…you did it all in one day. You didn’t even check into the inn I put all your luggage in!”
“Puh! I’m just that much of a professional,” you assured. “I’ve been doing this business for years, I assure you that the fishing problem is solved and that your village will prosper once more. Hunter’s word.”
For once since your time on Watatsumi island, you saw the timid man smile. “Th-Thank you miss monster hunter!” he exclaimed, “Your generosity shall be paid tenfold! If you ever come to visit anytime soon, I promise to treat you to dinner!”
“Pfft, you’re too kind, timid boy,” you smiled, “However, I must be going now as I’d rather not be out to sea for too long…”
“Are you sure you can traverse the sea at this hour?” he gulped. “It’s all pitch black out there…”
“As long as I have my eyes, I’m good,” you chuckled, relying heavily on your tremendous eyesight as every trained monster hunter had the honed ability to see in pitch darkness. “Farewell Mr. Timid Boy, it was nice chatting with you.” You tossed him another sack of coin before finally untying your boat and getting on before drifting off. The man who helped relay information to you waving for as long as you could see.
“Can I come out now?” Came Kokomi’s muffled voice as you chuckled and popped the lid open from the cooler. “Yes, my helper is gone now. It’s just the two of us at sea.”
“Ah…” she propped her whole body up from the cooler full of water and looked around at the empty space around you. Nothing but night sky and water filling the void as the only things in sight were the boat, your equipment, and you.
“The sea is so quiet from the surface…” Kokomi murmured, seeming in awe at how smooth everything looked.
“Trust me, it wasn’t like this in the morning.” You groaned. “I think I almost puked up my breakfast…”
Your eyes lit up at the reminder and eagerly dug into your satchel to fetch a small container of Tupperware. ‘Food! I forgot I haven’t eaten since this morning. I’m practically starving!’
Kokomi looked perplexed at the little piece of plastic only to grow more intrigued when a very tasty smell emerged once you opened it. She was curious, she had never seen such a strange contraption before and was tempted to ask you what it was before laying her eyes on a strange —yet very delectable looking— food in the shape of a smiley face.
“Scary la— Y/N, what’s that?” She asked curiously. Her nose twitching at the smell as the Tupperware had succeeded in keeping your food hot all day.
“Ah, my lunch. I was supposed to eat it while on my job to find you, but I forgot once you came so abruptly.”
“It smells good…” Kokomi mumbles, her tummy making an awkward rumbling noise and causing her to frown. “Ah…sorry.”
‘Cute.’ You took note at how she balled up her tail to cover her bare stomach as if that would muffle the noise at all. “There’s no need to be embarrassed, it’s just your body telling you that you’re hungry. It’s only natural.”
You picked up one of the smiley face fries in your container and handed it over to the starving mermaid. “Here. It’s made up of mostly starch so it can be quite filling.”
“What is it?” Kokomi immediately shoved it into her mouth and nearly screamed at the burning sensation on her tongue.
“H-HOT—!”
You held your hands out for her to spit into and couldn’t help but laugh at her exasperated face. “You’re supposed to blow on it before eating. I thought they would have cooled down by now but I guess not…”
“Ugh…I’m just not used to hot food.” Kokomi murmurs. Which is understandable considering that the ocean can be pretty cold and you doubt that the merfolk need to cook in order to survive. “It hurts my tongue…”
“Here, let me blow on one for you.” You picked up another smiley face fry and blew on it gently to soothe the whispering steam. “Try it now.” You lifted the morsel up to her lips and watched as Kokomi hesitantly bit into it with the caution of a newborn kitten. Barely even chewing, her eyes lit up at this strange new flavor –although it’s literally just salt and potato– and began reaching over to hastily grab another one from your lap.
“Like it?” You chuckled.
“It’s so good!” she exclaimed, grabbing another before blowing on it like a candle. “What is it?!”
“Fries.”
“Fries!”
She shoved it in her mouth and dove for another before quickly swatting her hand away. “Slow down! You’ll choke if you eat too fast!” She pouted at your quick reflexes and resumed chewing at a much slower pace. “Whth aw thfese mfade of?” she asked through a mouthful of potato.
“It’s made of a type of root vegetable we have on land. It’s called a potato.” You smiled, using your thumb to wipe away some of it off her face. “It’s so good!” she beams after swallowing her bite whole. “Is all human food this good?”
“Most of them, yeah.” You found yourself enjoying your time with Kokomi as the two of you exchanged face fries and chatted about what kind of foods you most enjoyed eating. Your heart swelling at the fact that you finally, finally found someone who enjoyed the same tastes that you had. In your face Thoma! Smiley face fries are delicious!
“Oh! I almost forgot!” Kokomi shouts abruptly as she suddenly digs through her bag to fish out something long and pointy. “I have a gift for you, Y/N.”
“You don’t have to do that–” you tried assuring before nearly getting your nose speared by something long and pointy. Goddammit, this was the second time today that Kokomi almost made you scream.“Of course I do! I feel terrible about throwing your dagger off the pier so I wanted to make it up to you!”
“I adore you for your generosity, Kokomi but please don’t hold something pointy so close to my face.” You sputtered as the tip of the object was dangerously close to landing you in the infirmary.
“Oh! Sorry.”
She carefully turned it over and handed it to you so that you could grasp it safely by the handle. Heart still racing from the encounter as you tried to compose yourself to appreciate her gift. “So? What do you think?”
As you looked down at the long, bone-like blade in your hands, you ran your fingers through the rough and textured spine of the handle. The ‘blade’ part of the weapon having tiny little jagged roots that jutted out downwards so that if you were to stab something, the jagged edges would hook onto the flesh and make it extra painful to pull out.
“It’s a stingray dagger! Us merfolk usually use the skeletons of animal parts as weapons since they make useful daggers and swords. Of course, I polished this dagger from an already dead stingray, I’m not a barbarian!” Kokomi explains. “I felt bad since you lost your original dagger, and although this might not be comparable to it in terms of quality, I wanted to get you a temporary replacement.”
She bows her head respectively as a small blush seeps onto her face. “I hope you don’t mind…”
“Woahhh…” you breathed out in awe, tracing the cool patterns on the weapon. “It’s beautiful, Kokomi. Thanks! I’ve never seen or felt anything like this on any weapon I’ve held before.”
“Ahhh, that makes me glad!” The pinkette grins. “Perhaps I'll sharpen an identical one so that we can match.”
“That’s…” Oh gods, that’s so cute. “You– You can do that, yes. I won’t object to it.”
Kokomi giggles at your reaction and the two of you enjoy your ride in comfortable silence.
Tumblr media
“Thomaaaa!” You called out as your boat drew closer to the mainland. “Thomaaaaaaaa.”
“Y/N…who’re you calling to?” Kokomi asked worriedly.
“My best friend, Thoma! He’s going to be helping me move you to your new location. Across the mainland and somewhere where you won’t be able to witness fishermen hunting your friends.” As your boat cruises closer you could make out the faint outline of a tall man waving at you from the dock. That unmistakable ponytail of his being the key giveaway to knowing it’s your friend from afar.
“Over here!” He called out through the fog, shining a bright flashlight so you could dock correctly beside the pier.
“A human man?!” Kokomi exclaims, eyes wide before diving back down into her cooler and tucking herself in to make herself as small as possible. “Ah, Kokomi what’s wron—“
“Y/N! Eyes ahead!” Thoma called out sternly, causing you to remember your original mission and focus on steering the boat correctly. “Sorry! I got distracted a bit…”
Pulling up to the side of where Thoma was currently standing, you killed the motor and got up to leave before feeling a cold hand catch yours.
“…Kokomi?”
“You aren’t leaving me with him, right?” She asked timidly, unsure of being left alone with a human stranger without you. “Ah, of course not. Thoma is just helping me carry you, that’s all.”
“…Okay.” Kokomi mutters, hesitantly letting you go so that you could toss the rope to Thoma and have him tie your boat to the dock.
“I got your message,” Thoma chuckled. “You really cleared a mission in under a day? That’s a new record for you.”
“Oh please, I’ve dealt with easier missions than this.” You grinned. “It just so happens that Kokomi is easier to negotiate with than fight.”
“So that’s her name…” Thoma looked over to the balled up Kokomi and she shot him an angry face in return. Not liking the strange new human as he was not only a stranger, but a stranger that was taking up your attention!
“Hah, she looks like she’d shred me to pieces…” Thoma laughed nervously. “If looks could kill, I’d be in her stomach by now.”
“Nah she won’t do that. Kokomi doesn’t eat meat. Or, fish meat, I guess.” You assured, failing to notice the grim look overtaking Kokomi’s usually innocent features.
‘No, but I would shred him for you, Y/N.’ Kokomi seethed. ‘Feed him to my fishies and sell his bones to use as mermaid clubs—‘
“Anyway, did you get what I asked for, Thoma?” You asked, cutting the conversation short.
“Er…not exactly…” Thoma winced, gesturing to a wheelbarrow behind him.
“THOMA—!” You nearly bashed your head against the floor out of frustration. “I told you to bring me a pickup truck so we can drive Kokomi much easier!”
“I couldn’t find my keys…” Thoma mumbled. “So I found this wheelbarrow in my shed and figured I could use that.”
You wanted to cry.
“What’s a wheelbarrow?” Kokomi asked out of the blue. Oh right, she was still left in the dark about all this.
“Er…Sorry Kokomi but since Thoma left his brains at home he forgot to bring something very important to transport you in. So now we have to carry you in this.” You pointed to the brown wheelbarrow behind Thoma and held your breath for the inevitable disdain on Kokomi’s face.
Only…there was no disdain.
“I get to ride in that?!” Kokomi squeals.
“You’re excited?!” Both you and Thoma exclaim.
Kokomi practically splashed around in glee. “I’ve never written in a human land vehicle before! It looks so fun! It even has wheels!” She lifted her arms up like a toddler asking to be picked up. “I want to go in!”
You and Thoma looked at each other, before a smug smile made its way onto Thoma’s face. “Glad to know she’s not crabby about it unlike someone I know.”
He chuckled when you rolled your eyes. “Whatever Thoma the Tank Engine, as long as Kokomi is comfortable.” You walked over to Kokomi’s raised arms and put them down to carry her a different way. Her face growing confused as she thought you were picking her up from under the arms.
“Sit up, I’m carrying you in a much easier way.” You explained, waiting for Kokomi to get in an arched sitting position before sliding your arms under the midsection of her tail and the back of her body.
“Ah—!” Kokomi did not expect you to princess style carry her out of the boat and walk over to the wheelbarrow like a knight in shining armor. Her hands reaching desperately to cling onto your neck as she fathomed the thought of you carrying her around like this all the time. ‘Wow, Y/N is actually really strong…!’
“There you go…” you grumbled softly as you gently set Kokomi on the wheelbarrow. The mermaid easily feeling comfortable inside despite her tail hanging off the side due to its massive size. “Are you comfortable?”
“Very.” Kokomi confirmed. “Push me. Please.”
It sounded more like a demand rather than a request, but you indulged in her anyway.
“Of course, Thoma; you could just drop my equipment at my house, thanks.”
“Wait, I thought I was coming with you?” Thoma queried.
“You were if you had brought the pickup truck I asked for so you could drive it. However, since you didn’t, I will be personally escorting Kokomi on my own.” You gripped the handles of the wheelbarrow and began jogging to give Kokomi the ride of her life. Her voice squealing at the feeling of air on her face whilst you waved goodbye to Thoma.
“You know where my house keys are! See you in a few hours!”
“You better repay me someday, Y/N!”
You only laughed at his obedience and indulged yourself in Kokomi’s angelic laughter and squeals. Raising her arms high up in the air as if she were riding a roller coaster.
“Land air feels great!” She exclaims, shutting her eyes and letting the wind blow at her face. “It’s so much more fragrant and crisp!”
You weren’t entirely sure what she meant by ‘crisp’ but you were enjoying her happiness nonetheless.
As the two of you cut through some scenic paths and nature’s residence in civilization, you and Kokomi played a game which involved her pointing at something random, and you telling her what it was.
“What’s that?”
“A tree.”
“What’s that?”
“A rabbit.”
“What’s that?”
“Another tree.”
As tiring as it was to entertain the curious mermaid, you could tell she was getting tired as her eyes started drooling adorably and her speech started getting slurred. Your heart hammering at the sight as even you had to admit that the tedious creature was a bit adorable.
“Is that another tree..?”
“Nope. That’s a bush.” You chuckled, peering through the horizon and spotting the other side of the sea in front of you. An empty beach that no one ever used so that the two of you could say your goodbyes in private.
“Here we are,” you spoke gently, pushing the wheelbarrow carefully down the hill and traversing from gravel to sand. The smell of salty seawater coming all too familiar to you once more as the previous smells from the forest were a memory no more.
“It’s so pretty…” Kokomi gasped, her eyes stirring back awake when you set the wheelbarrow to a stop to gaze at the ocean in front of you. A sunrise now peeking up from the horizons as you had spent all night traveling on foot with Kokomi. “This is where I will live?”
“If you choose to. You can practically live anywhere you can swim to.” You chuckled.
“That sounds a lot better than the cove already…” Kokomi sighed, looking back at you with glossy, blue eyes. “I think I’m ready to go now, Y/N.”
You smiled.
“Alright then.”
As you moved to pick up Kokomi once more, she gripped onto your neck again before planting a small kiss against your cheek. An action that caused you to nearly lose balance and drop her before you could even reach the water.
Luckily, your hunter instincts stopped you from doing so.
“Ah— Kokomi?!” You were blushing. Why were you blushing?!
“Thank you for this, Y/N. Even though this is your way of getting rid of me, I’m still grateful.”
“But I’m not getting rid of you Kokomi.” You waded into the water until you were waist deep and set Kokomi down to swim. “If anything, I really enjoyed your company. So much so to say that I even like you as a person.”
Kokomi, now submerged in cold water, had tears in her eyes that could easily be mistaken as seawater. “You like me?” She grins.
“You’re tolerable. Yeah.”
She smiles when you look away out of embarrassment and pets your hair in comfort, your face only burning up even more. “I like you too, Y/N. I hope we see each other again soon.”
She grins one last time and you’ve committed that smile into the very corners of your memory.
“I promise to always be nearby.”
With a cute little wave, she slides from your grasp and takes off with the strength of a feisty orca. Jetting off with a speed you could only hope to see again in your dreams.
But maybe this parting wouldn’t be too bad. As you watched Kokomi swim deeper and deeper into the sea, you felt the faint, bittersweet tang of remembrance as you recalled all the fun times you had with the little mermaid. A somber smile on your lips as you reached into your pocket and pulled out the little stingray dagger she gifted to you on the boat.
“Even though you’re out in the big blue sea by now…” you felt each sharp bristle against your finger and grinned at the thought of her making a matching set. “I think you’re still right beside me.”
And who knows.
Maybe you’ll see her again…

“Shinobu, I love you, but—“ you anxiously looked behind you as the flashing of police cars grew closer, “Why the hell are we here?!”
It was already late enough into the night when Shinobu called you over for a little midnight rendezvous. Recently she hadn’t been around much as the Arataki gang she ran had been taking up too much of her time, so much so, that when she called you over at almost one in the morning to go on a date, you said yes in a heartbeat. Never mind the fact that you were still half asleep and on your way to get a midnight snack.
However, you hadn’t expected that running from the cops would be your date with the punk-esque woman. And you certainly hadn’t expected for Shinobu to drag you to your date spot in the middle of an abandoned building.
“Well, if I tell you why then it wouldn’t be a surprise,” Shinobu chuckled, quickly making a low duck and dragging you with her as you both narrowly avoided a low falling pipe, “Watch your head babe, that’s the place where I kiss the most.”
Heart still pumping from almost banging your head against a pipe, you tried to calm yourself down but failed due to the overwhelming noises of police sirens and running feet. “Shinobu…! Are you sure this is safe?” You winced as you both passed by some police tape, “Are we breaking and entering?!”
Your girlfriend only pulled down her mask and grinned at you in response.
This did not help your blood pressure one bit.
“SHINOBU—!”
“Shhhh they’ll hear you!”
She carefully shoved you off into a small crevice in the building and stood in front of you, covering your mouth with her hand and making sure not a peep was uttered from your lips.
“Not a word until they pass,” Shinobu whispered, waiting a few moments for the sirens to cease before taking her hand off you slowly. “There…”
Shoulders now slouching in relaxation, you sighed and bonked your girlfriend on the head, making her wince and recoil back into the opposite wall. “Ow—!”
“Not a word you said,” you scoffed, grabbing your girlfriend’s cheeks and pulling her closer, “Now do you care to explain to me why we had to hide from the cops?! It’s almost 2am Shinobu! And my heart feels like it’s about to burst!”
She winced at your stressful tone and saw the frenzied panic in your eyes. This was not how she wanted this date to go, and she felt extremely bad for doing so as she wanted this date to be a surprise.
“…I’m sorry Y/N,” Shinobu pulled you closer for a hug and rested her head into the crook of your shoulder, “This date was supposed to be a relaxing and decompressing evening, I hadn’t meant for you to get so spooked…”
You sarcastically rolled your eyes and hugged back. “Yeah, because running from the cops is totally how I’d like to spend my evening. Mhm.”
Your girlfriend chuckled at your sarcasm and pulled you back, brushing a stray misshapen lock from your hair and planting a small kiss on your forehead for reassurance, “I promise that that wasn’t my intention, I’d never make my girl run a mile as a date,” her eyes suddenly darted to your legs and a smirk formed its way upon her face, “Although, I was impressed with how fast you could keep up. My girl’s got pretty tall stamina to be able to match my pace. And pretty legs too.”
She teasingly smacked the side of your calves and you made a move to almost kick her. The cheeky smile paired with an even cheekier laugh as she quickly moved out of the way and dragged you with her.
“You can kick me later, right now we need to get to the rooftop before it starts!”
“It? Rooftop?” You let out a squeal when Shinobu suddenly hurried you over to a small metal staircase leading up to the top. “Just trust me babe, when have I ever steered you wrong?”
“The time we broke into a graveyard and ripped my shorts hopping over the fence, the time we got locked in a shopping mall and had to hide in the fountain, the time we fell into—”
“Okay okay enough! But I’ve always bailed you out on all those occasions, right?” Shinobu shot you a coy smile as you swiftly climbed over the last set of stairs, “You know I’ll always get us out. I even studied law!”
“Which makes all these situations even more ironic,” you giggled, finally reaching the rooftop door and using your legs to swiftly kick the door down with strength alone. “Now, why are we up here?”
Meanwhile, Shinobu practically ignored your question as she only stared at the fallen door in awe. Mentally screaming to herself like the schoolgirl spirit she never lost and repeating over and over in her head ‘I’m so glad I’m dating such a woman…I’m so glad I’m dating such a woman…’
“Well…?” You put your hands on your hips as you cut her off from her little daydream. “Is this the part where fireworks shoot out or something?” You joked.
“Hm? Oh, right!” Shinobu quickly grabbed your waist and dragged you towards the center of the rooftop. “Wait here, you are going to love this!”
You smiled at how absolutely goofy your girlfriend looked while excitedly running around the roof in search of what she was looking for. Her punk looking aesthetic not matching the giddiness in her voice as she ran around the roof in a lovestruck manner. ‘What a dork…’ you sighed as imaginary hearts floated all around you, ‘Thinking she’s so cool but being so cute…’
“Found it!” Shinobu called out as she walked towards you holding two chords. “Prepare to be amazed!”
Building up anticipation, Shinobu proceeded to jam the plug into the socket and made…
Absolutely nothing.
Seconds later of reaction time, Shinobu grinned weakly and flashed you a nervous smile. “Just uh, just give me a second.”
She unplugged it and plugged it in again.
Nothing.
“Shino—”
“I got it!”
Third time’s a try, right?
Nope.
“Shinobu, baby, I think—”
“Y/N I got it—”
A few grunts of displeasure followed by the constant clicking and unclicking of the cords only made Shinobu madder. Sweat now beading down her face as she tried her best to make the stupid thing work.
“Just give me oneee second Y/N I think I got it this time—”
“Shinobu, is this the one you were looking for?”
Your girlfriend looked up to see you holding up another cord almost identical to the one she held in her hand. “Uh…yes?” she bashfully took the cord from your hands and kissed your wrist in acknowledgment. “Thank you Y/N.”
“That’s what girlfriends are for,” you chuckled, saving this memory of clueless Shinobu in your archives. This was one of the few times Shinobu would show this dorky side of her, and you intended to keep it in your mind forever.
Oh how you loved her so.
“Alright, here’s the actual big finish! Prepare to be amazed, Y/N!” Clutching the two cords in anticipation, you watched as she snapped the two of them together as sparks flew out from the outlet itself. A flicker of light causing you to look up at the sky, as lights strung up around the rooftop lit up in bulbs of one by one.
“Sh-Shinobu..!” You gasped with surprise, taken aback with how absolutely beautiful the gritty rooftop looked, “This is—!”
“I’m not finished yet,” Shinobu grabbed your hands and slowly turned you around to face a silhouetted billboard on the building across from yours. “A few lights aren’t possibly enough to satisfy my girl, so…”
As more and more lights slowly illuminated its way towards the other building, you watched as the billboard in front of you suddenly flashed with colors of life. Dozens and dozens of strung up lights surrounding a beautiful mural of art that had been spray painted in a style only you could recognize so well.
“Shinobu…” you felt your eyes water as you stared at the mural in front of you. “The art…it’s…”
“It’s you.” Shinobu smiled as she kissed the tops of your hands in affection. “Do you like it? I spent all of last night perfecting it for you.”
“Like it? Of course I do…!” You gave her an ‘are you serious?’ look and hugged her, “Gods Shinobu, it’s the most beautiful thing anyone’s ever done for me! The details, the colors…” you spared a glance at the artwork beside you and felt your heart throb at all the attention to detail she’s put in your face. You had no idea she was this observant…
“It’s beautiful…thank you.”
You kissed her cheek out of affection and continued to fangirl over the beautiful mural. Shinobu carefully slipping out of your grasp and tapping your cheek. “Hey, that’s not all…!” She teased coyly, only further making your jaw drop as you thought that this date was already skyrocketing to success. “There’s more for you.”
“I— excuse me?!” You watched as Shinobu went over to a covered table and pulled out a gift basket of sweets, a sweet pink bow tied to the handle as your girlfriend sheepishly gave it to you. “I…I know you’ve always wanted to try this bakery but couldn’t due to how far it was…so I drove there myself today and tried my best to get what you liked.” She rubbed the back of her neck nervously, “Is this good…?”
“Sh-Shinobu!” You could barely contain your love for this woman in words, “Good? GOOD?!” You grabbed her by the collar of her jacket and pulled her down towards you to glare. “I swear, you’re going to be the end of me one day Kuki Shinobu…”
“Hah…is that a bad thing?” Her eyes darted down to your lips as you slowly leaned forward with intent.
“No…” you breathed out airily.
Lips just barely brushing one another, you were about to kiss your girlfriend when an obnoxious, almighty loud shout interrupted you two and startled Shinobu to the heavens.
‘Oh…’
‘Oh no…’
“Well if it isn’t my favorite girlboss gangster!” Came a voice that sent shivers down your girlfriend’s spine. “I see the date is going well!”
You both broke off your close embrace and turned to see not only Itto, but the whole Arataki gang present as well. A small yet obnoxiously loud cluster that would definitely send noise complaints all throughout the city.
“B-BOSS?!” Shinobu gasped out of her stunned silence.
“In the flesh!” He grinned wickedly, “Hi Y/N, how’s the date goin’? Shinobu treatin’ you right?”
You awkwardly waved at your girlfriend’s gang leader and giggled. “Hi Itto, yes, the date has been going fine…” you wished you still got to kiss Shinobu though… “And yes, Shinobu has been nothing but kind to me, she’s just the absolute best girlfriend a girl could ask for…”
You sent her a soft smile and Shinobu swears that she could hear lyres coming from angels.
“Really? Whew, that’s a relief,” Itto made a sweat wipe motion with his hands, “Cuz Shinobu earlier was absolutely freaking the hell out over this date. Seriously, you should’ve seen her.”
“Huh?”
“BOSS—!”
“Oh yeah, she was sweatin’ bullets, absolute missiles actually if I do say so myself. Gods, she was such a mess, that she started pacing a hole into our living room floor. Seriously, you’ve got this girl absolutely whipped for you Y/N, congrats! I’ve never seen Shinobu lose her shit like this in all my time having her in the gang.”
Aaand that was it. Shinobu’s pride absolutely destroyed in one single paragraph. Crushed. Absolutely demolished. Blown away to smithereens.
It didn’t help that you were amused by this revelation as well.
“Awww really Shinobu?” You teased, watching as the tips of your girlfriend’s ears went bright red. “That’s so cute of you! I knew that suave cool side of you was just a facade!”
“U-Uhmm, why are you here again boss?” You watched as your girlfriend furiously tried to change the subject. “I did inform you that our date will be taking place here. Alone. With just the two of us…”
Emphasizing on the alone part of the sentence, Shinobu could only watch in disbelief as her boss barked out a laugh and held his abdomen in amusement. “Hahaha, of course! I could never forget such an important detail,” he wiped a tear from his eye, “I came here to quickly apologize to Y/N for stealing you away all this time and busying you with all the gang’s duties. The goons and I feel really, really bad about it, so we decided to make it up to our dearest Shinobu and Y/N.”
“That’s okay boss there really is no need—”
“Quiet Shinobu! The concert’s starting.”
“C-Concert?!”
You gripped Shinobu’s arm in reassurance and flashed her a calming smile. “Don’t worry, if things start going south we could always ditch them before they even notice!”
Your girlfriend could only scoff in amusement. “I’ve been a bad influence on you,” she rasps as she ruffles your hair. “At least you take responsibility for it,” you grinned.
“AHEMHEMHEM testing testing!” The loud throat clear of Itto’s voice started you out of your stupor and forced the two of you to look forward at the Arataki gang. Now positioned with microphones and instruments they pulled from god knows where, and looking absolutely ridiculous as they mimicked the starting moves of some 80s rock band on a poster.
“Oh my gods…” Shinobu soured, an unnerving feeling of despair crawling up her back as she anticipated for the worst. “I’m so sorry…” she whispered.
“This performance is dedicated to our bestest, most beautiful-est member Kuki Shinobu, and her girlfriend! They’ve been together for almost two years and we’ve decided to honor that love by compiling an album of their relationship from start to finish.”
‘Oh no…’
“This song is called ‘The day I fell so hard for you I literally tripped into wet cement because I wasn’t looking where I was going’ as told from the perspective of Shinobu!”
‘OH NO…’
With a ridiculously loud strum of an electric guitar, Shinobu could only wince in absolute dismay as her fellow gang members started pouring their hearts out into song about the start of your relationship. A sweet yet absolutely embarrassing gift for Shinobu’s part as you had no idea any of these things actually happened.
“You fell into wet cement?” You laughed over the loud music.
“You were really pretty, okay?!” Shinobu winced out of embarrassment, just praying for the song to end so that Itto and the gang could leave you two in peace.
Unfortunately that was…not an option.
The song seemed to last for ages —at least for Shinobu’s sake— and it took forever for the ending to conclude with a finish. Which, in standard Arataki gang fashion, ended with an explosive finish as one of the goons literally kicked over a chair to demonstrate the “rock and roll” aspect of the performance.
“WOOOOO!” Itto cheered, landing on his knees with a sliding finish. “Did ya like it? Y/N, what’re your thoughts? Wasn’t it super cool how I belted that high note in the chorus?”
You gave him the benefit of the doubt and lightly clapped at the gang’s performance out of pity. “It was amazing, Itto. I’m so glad Shinobu has so many wonderful friends.”
She flashed you a sheepish smile and made a quick move to start shoving Itto towards the direction of the exit. “Yes, wonderful friends, thanks so much for the performance boss, but Y/N and I would like some alone time and—”
“Ohohoho no can do little lady! There’s still eighteen more tracks to this album and I really want to sing ‘That time I accidentally ruined your favorite bag and almost robbed a store to get you a new one!’ It’s my absolute favorite from the album!”
“What?!” Shinobu’s eyes widened at your surprise as she went to cover Itto’s mouth. You weren’t supposed to know that!
“Boss please, I just want some alone time with Y/N—”
Aaand that was ruined because the wails of police sirens suddenly came back and it was there that you remembered that you all were trespassing.
“Sh-Shinobu!” You panicked, your girlfriend quickly grabbing your arm in reassurance. “Calm down babe, everything will be fine, we just need to stay calm—”
“EVERYONE SCATTER!”
Itto suddenly smashed one of the lightbulbs and caused pitch dark blackness to swallow you whole. Effectively cloaking you all from the cops’ gaze but also severely impairing your guys’ vision.
“Shinobu!”
“This way! Just hold on tight, Y/N!”
Suddenly grabbing onto your waist, Shinobu quickly and quietly led you two out and away from the building with the speed and silence of a ninja. Itto and his goons all running the opposite way and successfully causing a diversion away from you guys as the cops trailed them instead.
“What about the gang?!” You called out as you and Shinobu ducked under some police tape.
“Eh, I’ll bail them out eventually. It’s not like this is the first time this has happened.”
She shot you a nonchalant look and it felt like you were falling in love all over again. The thrill of dating such a high-risking bad girl never ceasing to bore you as everyday with her was an adventure.
“Up here.”
And what an adventure with her it was.
Following the direction of where she was pointing to, the two of you carefully made your way up a metal ladder and found yourselves standing over twenty feet high on a billboard that overlooked the city’s street lamps. Smaller than compared to the building you were on earlier, but nonetheless, still very pretty in terms of scenery.
“It’s…not the view of the city, but I still wanted us to enjoy our date,” Shinobu murmured bashfully as she sat down on the platform. “I’m sorry we had to do so much running.”
“Hmpf, don’t be,” you sat down beside her and jokingly nudged her shoulder, “You could take me anywhere and I’d still enjoy every moment of it.”
“Even the city dump?” Shinobu joked.
“I…suppose,” though you scrunched up your nose at the thought. Your girlfriend laughing at the face you made before pulling you closer with her arm.
“Pfft, don’t worry, I’m way more gentlewomanly than that,” Your girlfriend smiled, “After all, every date we’ve been on has been perfect in my eyes if I do say so myself. Well— except for this one…” Shinobu gritted her teeth.
“You’re right, this date hasn’t exactly been perfect per se…” you smiled cheekily as you leaned in closer to her embrace. “It’d be much better if we had those baked goods you had earlier to eat. I’m still upset we left them there when we ran, what a waste…”
Shinobu smiled at the small huff you let out and reached into her pocket. “You mean, these sweets?” She teased as she pulled out two pastries.
“Wha— Shinobu!” You accepted the pastry given to you with surprise. “How on earth did you get these?”
“I may have snagged them while we were on the run,” Shinobu chuckled bashfully, “Seemed like a waste to just leave em’ there so I made quick work just to grab them.”
“Gods Shinobu…” you took a quick bite of your pastry and sighed in content with how good it was, “You really are the best girlfriend a girl could ever have. You’re amazing.”
“Hah…thanks babe…” Shinobu blushed at your compliment and stared down at your lips while you chewed. “Do you think I could get a kiss now? I mean, we were just interrupted…”
“Hmmm? I think I’d rather kiss this pastry,” you teased as you leaned in to take another bite.
“Oh please,” Shinobu saw right through your fake facade and tilted your chin up to face her instead of the pastry, “We both know how much you’d rather kiss me.”
“Cocky aren’t you?” You giggled, before quickly pecking her on the lips and savoring the soft feeling of her skin on yours. “Is that better?”
“A bit too fast, but I suppose,” Shinobu grumbled, causing you to giggle at her frowning expression.
“Fine, would this be better?”
You grabbed the sides of her face and pressed her lips more tighter against yours, the close proximity of your bodies and velvet touch of your lips causing both of your eyes to flutter closed with delight
“Yes, it is…” Shinobu whispered airily, loving the way how your lips seemed to fit with hers.
“I’m glad,” you smiled, going back to your pastry and staring out into the night below. “Because after this is over, you and I will be having a talk about my favorite bag being destroyed and me not knowing.”
“Oh.”

SHENHE
Tumblr media
Shenhe isn’t used to having such flavorful fruit in the mountains, but after having her first taste of watermelon, her reaction to it is nothing short of adorable. Her eyes got so wide and her chewing got so much faster. Tasting this newfound flavor since all she was used to were herbs and strange vegetation growing up.
“How strange. The liquid coming out of the flesh is very flavorful and refreshing. What is this fruit called again?” She can’t stop eating. It’s so good and it shows. Shenhe just shoves slice after slice into her mouth and her little chewing noises are so cute it’s just ‘munch munch munch’ with the most deadpan yet somewhat intrigued expression you’ve ever seen her make.
She won’t even talk much now that she’s stuffing her mouth with watermelon, and your conversations over the summer mostly consist of you talking and Shenhe’s quiet munching. (She sounds like a gerbil)
“Enjoying yourself there?” You’d tease as Shenhe stares intriguingly at the flesh of the fruit. Prodding it with a fork as she examines the juices gushing out with the curiosity matched of a toddler. “It kind of bleeds out like real human flesh. Fascinating. Do the people of Liyue really eat this?”
Ignoring her strange comment on comparing watermelon to human flesh, you just smiled and raised a triangle of melon to her lips. “Mhm, it’s really good. I’m sure you’d like it, Shenhe. Way better than the bitter herbs you’d always eat,” you stuck your tongue out playfully at the notion and chuckled when Shenhe shook her head.
“It isn’t all that bad. Besides, this fruit comes from the ground just like herbs. So surely the taste must be–”
And then you nudged the slice gently into her mouth, causing your girlfriend’s eyes to widen because holy cannoli the taste was just astounding. “Hm, like it?” you grinned, watching as Shenhe’s eyes practically lit up the more she chewed.
She didn’t answer your question. But by judging how much watermelon she stuffed into her cheeks, you could only assume that she loved it.

GANYU
Tumblr media
Whenever you cut up some watermelon for you and Ganyu, she’d always end up with a mess on her face. She just can’t help it! Whenever she is given a slice she just smushes her face into it and chews away like a little hamster.
Once all its innards are cleaned out, she pops her head back up and oh archons her face is an absolute mess. Which causes you to chuckle and dab at her face with a wet napkin going “it’s okay darling, you look adorable” and she’d just blush out of embarrassment because you’re always doing this to her and she can’t help but get shy. (She’s also a bit self conscious about how she eats in front of others but you always assure her that you love her regardless <33)
Sometimes you’d kiss the sweet juice off her lips and that’d cause her to go really red. Hiding her face under a slice of watermelon because it’s also red and she prays you think her blush is just the juice. (You do not)
“Ah, you’re always so messy…” you’d smile, dabbing at your wife’s lips with a napkin everytime she took a bite. The juice of the fruit would always messily run down her chin due to how much she enjoyed it, and it would always fluster her to no end whenever you’d dote on her lovingly.
“I-I’m sorry! I wasn’t trying to be messy…” Ganyu would mumble, gasping when you squeezed her cheeks with the napkin. “Mm, don’t be. I enjoy watching you happy whilst eating. You’re always conscious about how and how much you eat but as long as you're happy and healthy, I don’t mind one bit.”
Dabbing a little at her other cheeks, you flinched when you saw Ganyu tear up a little. Suddenly backtracking on everything you said and waving your hands around in a panic.
“Ah, what’s wrong? I’m sorry if I said something weird, please don’t cry! I love you!”
“Ah, no no I’m not sad! I’m just…” Ganyu wiped away her teary eyes, “I’m just really glad I married you. You’re always so sweet to me even when I feel unflattering.”
“Well, I don’t think you’re unflattering,” you smiled and kissed the remaining watermelon juice off her lips, “In fact I find you stunning right in this very moment.”
And she believed every word.
Tumblr media
EULA LAWRENCE
Tumblr media
Eula 100% has no tolerance for how messy the fruit is. She hates how it gets all over her hands and mouth and practically needs you to feed it to her. Dicing up the slices into more breakable parts so that Eula can be the sophisticated lady that she is and eat with a fork and bowl.
“Want me to feed you too?” you’d tease, watching her cheeks tint with the slightest bit of pink. “As utterly foolish as that sounds, I would not mind it, hmpf.”
And she crosses her arms pretending to be annoyed but in reality her heart just THROBS when you feed her. Savoring the taste of the sweet fruit and enjoying the loving look in your eyes as you stare at her.
“What. Why are you staring at me like that?”
“Can I feed you?”
“Absolutely not. We are in a public domain and–” you stuck your lip out in feigned sadness, “And…yes. You may feed me.” Eula sighed at the embarrassing agreement and shyly inched her chair closer to yours. Cursing herself for being so utterly weak against your adorable shenanigans.
“Stop acting like you hate it. You know you love being pampered like this.”
“Only from my fiancé shall I accept,” she huffed dramatically, the teensiest bit of pink making its way onto her face as you pushed a slice of watermelon to her lips. “D’aww, is the noble Eula Lawrence getting embarrassed over being spoiled? Oh how cute~!”
Aaaand that was the last straw.
“Tch, how dare you belittle me! I shall enact my vengeance as your future wife and embarrass you tenfold! Come here right now--”
And through the sounds of your muted laughter and protests of denial, Eula couldn’t help but smile as the two of you tried to shove watermelon pieces into each other’s mouths in an effort to embarrass one another. An adorable feat that even the ice queen herself couldn’t help but chuckle at.

YAE MIKO
Tumblr media
Somehow, someway, Miko can turn something as simple as eating watermelon into a teasing game for the both of you. She’d cut up the fruit into little, bite-sized cubes and hold the shape in between her canines, tapping your shoulder and ‘innocently’ asking you if she could feed you.
The offer was just so, so tempting, but the moment your lips brushed up against the cold fruit, Miko “drops” the piece and pecks your lips instead, snickering when she sees your face fall as if you would’ve rather kissed the watermelon.
“Now wasn’t that much sweeter?” She’d grin coyly. “I think I’d rather have smooched the watermelon,” you’d tease, causing Miko to smack you with her tail.
“Miko! What a waste of watermelon...” you’d pout, staring at the discarded piece of fruit after the guuji had tried to kiss you with it as a lure.
“Oh please, I’m sure my lips were much more sweeter than that. Don’t tell me you’d actually prefer kissing the watermelon...” her voice was teasing, but the look on your face caused it to falter. “What? Are you serious?” her face looked absolutely crestfallen.
“Mm...sorry darling, but I don’t think your lips could ever top such a sweet and delicious fruit...” you silently smirked to yourself, watching as Miko’s ears flared back in pettiness. “Ohhhh, just you wait you cheeky girl, when I get my hands on you--”
“If you get your hands on me,” you fired back, grinning and jabbing at the kitsune’s face with a slice, “But until then, as long as we’re out here enjoying the sun, I think I’ll just make out with the watermelon instead.”
You chuckled to yourself seeing pure Electro energy crackle around Miko in a jealous rage. You had never thought that there would be a day where Miko of all people, would be jealous over a fruit stealing your attention.
“Fine then, be that way,” she scoffed, pretending to pay no mind as the two of you continued to enjoy your little dessert. “But I’ll show you soon enough, just how sweet a kitsune’s lips could be...”

M.U.S.E. Event Case 004. Hu Tao x Female Reader
◇ Report submitted by: Moderator Angel on ▇▇▇▇.
gory descriptions of murder, English lessons, horrible spelling
Tumblr media
CASE FILE. MUSE-004
CLASS. POLTERGEIST
SEVERITY. 6 / 10
DESCRIPTION.  While investigating the unnatural death of a woman found bludgeoned in her home, an investigator had wandered up to the attic in order to investigate further into the house. Shortly after, his body came cascading down the stairs with a wooden object lodged deep within his throat, dying shortly after at the bottom of the stairs just as the woman had. Officials realized that the cause of the woman’s death wasn’t a murder, but rather an attack from a supernatural entity. They proceeded to call the appropriate authorities soon afterward.
Tumblr media
A woman in her forties was found dead at the bottom of the stairs with her frontal lobe crushed to a fine and bloody paste. A few feet away was the blood-soaked object of a lamp that seemed to be the cause of this woman’s death, glass shattered everywhere as the base of the lamp was bashed so hard against the woman’s head, there were still fragments of it lodged deep within her skull.
Authorities report that the cause of her death was a mystery. The woman lived alone and the only plausible explanation for her death was a run in with an intruder. But after a thorough examination throughout the house, authorities have confirmed that there were no traces of a break in from all entrance and exit points of the house.
So what caused her death really? An accident? But that wouldn’t explain the lamp wound. A psychotic episode? But her medical reports stated that she was in a perfectly content state. The answer to her death was a simple one, really; and all it took was for one unsuspecting investigator that just so happened to stumble upon the attic.
Downstairs heard a scream, and then another body came tumbling down the stairs just as the woman had. This time with a chair leg sticking out of his neck, his words trying to gurgle out of his throat but failing due to all the blood he was losing out of all the wrong places.
The head investigator swallowed a lump, amidst the panic of his team he looked up at the stairs and felt a chill run down his spine. There was a smile, only there for a second and yet a smile nonetheless. Mocking him as it disappeared quicker than a flash, seemingly beckoning for him and his crew to come closer to find out.
But he already knew the cause of this woman’s death, as that smile was the only clue he needed to conclude this investigation.
This house was haunted by a poltergeist.
Tumblr media
Eyes glazing over the board, you itched at the surface of your wrist while contemplating whether or not you wanted to take on a job request before heading home for the night. You were a bit short on cash lately due to having to buy some new night equipment, but it was worth it as it made killing that banshee all the more easier last time you were stuck in a crisis.
Yawning, your eyes landed on a peculiar case of a murderous poltergeist found a few towns over. Apparently, according to the news article plastered in sloppy ink, there was a murder of two people in a house after having an encounter with a poltergeist in the attic. A woman in her forties who was the owner of the house, and an investigator who accidentally came in contact with the spirit after deciding to explore the attic. Both victims’ lives ended with being pushed down the stairs, along with an object lodged in the top part of their bodies.
“Interesting…” you mouthed, tearing the wrinkled article off its pin. “I’ve never seen a poltergeist this aggressive before...”
In all your years of hunting monsters, all the poltergeists you’ve encountered were nothing short of annoying. Sure they’ve hurled objects at you, locked you in rooms, and even tried to throw you around a few times, but they’ve never actually tried to kill you before.
In short, poltergeists as a whole were just annoying little ghosts who needed a little exorcism. So why was this one so brutal in its attacks? Your curiosity was just too insatiable not to take on the task, and you decided that this job would be the perfect way to end your night.
…Said no one ever.
“Zhongli, can I take this one?” you turned back to the front desk and saw the old man shifting through some paperwork. His eyes narrowed in focus while his pen scribbled out incoherent words. “Hm?” he didn’t even look up from his pen and made a gesture with his hand. “Let me see?”
Your footsteps silent against the wooden floors, you handed him the news article and watched as he readjusted his spectacles to read through the blotchy print. “A 6/10? For a poltergeist?” even Zhongli seemed concerned. “That can’t be right, poltergeists are rated either a 4 or lower depending on the space they inhabit.”
His concerned eyes reached yours like an overprotective father to his daughter. “This could be quite dangerous, Y/N. I’ve never seen a poltergeist hold such a high rating before.”
“Which is exactly why I want to take it,” you grinned a bit too confidently. “I’m curious as to why such a low-ranking monster is ranked so high for this specific anomaly. I mean, nothing is out of the ordinary about this creature except for the fact that it killed people.”
“Which is precisely why I’m a bit worried,” Zhongli let his eyes wander through the article one more time. “Perhaps the entity at hand isn’t really a poltergeist. There is a good chance this entity was categorized falsely.”
“Well, we’ll never know unless I confirm it,” you smirked whilst fastening your backpack. “C’mon, I’ve handled way more dangerous monsters before. This’ll be a breeze.”
“Sigh, you speak of this like it’s squashing a fly,” the old man shook his head and reached for his stamp. “But, I know you are a talented monster hunter, so; I will approve this just for you.
With a loud stamp against the paper with his seal of approval, you grinned and quickly grabbed your things. Ready to head a few towns over to exorcize what could be the cause of your death.
Oh how exciting this job was!
Tumblr media
The town of Wangsheng was a dreary one to say the least. Clouds overtaking the sky in a blanket full of grey, homes boarded up and locked to keep all the intruders out. And, speaking of intruders, you were treated one as well considering your newest arrival amongst a town full of tightly-knit residents.
Every step you took, every glance you made, it was followed by the scowls and glares of the residents nearby who seemed to keep their eyes tightly pinned on you. Almost as if you were a walking freakshow yourself, made to be watched and gawked at by people who thought you were the anomaly.
“Excuse me, do you know where the Li-Mei residence is?”
At the sound of the unfortunate victim’s name, the man you asked flinched and shoved you away. You easily finding your footing and keeping your stance despite being shoved so abruptly.
“Get lost. If you’re here to ghost hunt then that’s just plain disrespectful.”
The man sneered at you while you could only watch in confusion. The locals around you only bad mouthing your encounter in secret as you stood there puzzled and in disarray. ‘Ghost hunting…’ you pondered for a bit and came to a conclusion. ‘In the few days that it took for me to get here, word must’ve spread about the murderous haunting here on that house.’
You looked around at the shady bystanders and chewed your lip at the sight.
‘Ghost hunters… No wonder these people are all skeptical. They’ve probably been bothered by enough rambunctious teens and fake exorcists.’ You quickly caught up with the man and tugged on his sleeve. “Excuse me.”
“Girl are you deaf–?” the man froze when you shoved your MUSE ID into his face, your own being stern and tightly composed while you spoke. “Sir, I am a certified monster hunter from MUSE. I have come to exorcize the anomaly haunting the Li-Mei residence. Now please, kindly tell me where the Li-Mei residence is located so that I may complete my job.”
The man only blankly stared at the ID in silence, eyes dilating from each and every word printed on there, before shifting to your ID photo. Sure enough, you were the real thing.
“Hmpf…I suppose you’re no phony,” he folded his arms and pointed to a tall hill on the left side of town. “Up there, there’s a lone house with a broken mailbox sitting at the front. That right there is where the Li-Mei residence is located.”
He suddenly leaned down to your height and scowled. “You better not be a fake. We oughta leave that house to rest if you are.”
“I promise I am not,” you swore, shifting your bag onto one shoulder and making your way towards the hill. “By the time I’m done here, that spirit will be gone.”
Waving dismissively to the townspeople behind you, you began your ascension to the tall hill in front of you. The climb proving to be quite a difficult one, as the path to the top was worn down by overgrown roots and fallen rock. How the woman in her forties managed to go up and down these all the time, you had no idea.
‘I’d hate to come home from work every night only to walk up these,’ you grimaced, your foot nearly sliding off a piece of unstable rock and threatening you to fall back down where you came from. ‘That woman must be a mountain goat or something! Great gods…’
Finally reaching the top, you propped your arm against the broken mailbox for support and caught your breath for a second before looking at the house. It was a run down, barely functioning two story house, and if the news article hadn’t proclaimed that the owner had been killed, you would’ve assumed it was abandoned.
At the front of the house was a porch holding up the front door. Completely bombarded in yellow police tape and boarded up with planks in order to keep intruders like teens out. Other than that, the front of the house was remarkably empty other than an old, rusted rocking chair pushed to the far corner of the porch.
“Eerie…” you muttered to yourself, walking closer to the house itself and failing to notice a set of eyes watching you from the attic window.
Stepping up to the old, paint-peeling steps of the front entrance to the door, you ducked under the low-swinging webs of police tape and tested the door knob out for yourself. Chewing your lip in displeasure as the knob wouldn’t turn at all. ‘Locked.’ came your thoughts as you reached into your bag for your crowbar. ‘Oh well. Nothing I can’t handle.’
Raising the crowbar at a steady distance, you carefully swung at the doorknob and grinned when the metal smacked against it with a satisfying thwack!
‘Again. At least one more time.’
Raising it again, you swung the crowbar at the knob with enough precision to completely cut it clean from the door, a hole left in its wake as you peered in through it out of curiosity.
‘Hah! That was easy,’ you let your eyes wander through the hole of what used to be the doorknob. ‘Now…where is it…?’
From what you could see from your position, the house inside was dark and barely illuminated. Antique furniture filling up what seemed to be the living room, and the faint splatter of blood at the bottom of the stairs from what seemed to be left from the body.
‘Seems like they left in a rush,’ you noted, before kicking down the door and entering swiftly. ‘Pity. They couldn’t even bother to clean up the blood for me.’
You clicked your flashlight on and shined the white orb around the darkly shadows of the haunted home. Half expecting a toaster to just lunge at your head, as you had just so abruptly broken into the home of the poltergeist. “Huh. Usually at this time I’d be dodging a picture frame by now,” you awkwardly wandered around the first floor of the house and explored the various rooms to get a feel for what you were dealing with. “Hm. The house is big, but not as big as a manor,” you let your light drift across old picture frames left behind from the owner of the house. ‘Looks like she didn’t have much family.’
Suddenly you heard a loud noise coming from upstairs. Your eyes darting to the top of the stairs located near the living room, and shining your light up as far as it could go.
“…I guess it’s up there.”
You shrugged and decided that it was about time to head up. After all, it seemed that the poltergeist liked to thrive up there as you had yet to encounter it throughout your exploration of the first floor. Which meant that up was the only other way to go.
Oh, but that meant you had to–
You grimaced as you let your light fall to the ground, illuminating the dried up blood sitting at the foot of the stairs. Why couldn’t they at least mop it down?
Blowing out a breath of air, you swallowed up any feelings you had and quickly stepped over the splatter patch of gore, making a mental note to yourself to clean your boots thoroughly once you got home. “Hah…it gets colder as you go up,” you spoke to yourself, shivering as you tried to ground yourself by talking to the silence.
“How creepy.”
But you were used to it. All spiritual monsters held some sort of cold chill the closer you got to them, and this one was no different. However, you couldn’t help but feel as if your chest was being knotted into thin layers of unquestionable anxiety, the lingering thought of this strangely murderous poltergeist sitting not too hidden beneath your mind.
‘A poltergeist who murders,’ you reached the top step of the second floor and took note of the now chilly temperatures, ‘I should be ready.’
Reassuring yourself by touching the sage pouch fastened to your waist, you took out your specially crafted book for exorcizing vengeful spirits. Something you borrowed from the library of MUSE as you would need something a lot more powerful than sage to deal with a 6/10 poltergeist.
‘Okay…’ you took a deep breath and held the book tightly in your arms. ‘I’m ready.’
Slipping on the professional hunter facade, you wandered about the second floor of the house to feel any ghostly chill or sign that the spirit was here. Clutching the book tightly in your grasp, and taking note of how some areas of the floor felt distinctly colder than others.
All the areas in question being the rooms closest to the attic stairs.
“The attic,” you murmured to yourself, gazing at the closed hatch above you. “One of the favorite places for a spirit to lurk around in.”
You felt a small twinge of anxiety stun the core of your stomach, but you forced it to go unnoticed as you needed your mental state as clear as day. You couldn’t let your fears overtake you so soon, so you forced your body to abide with your mind, and discard any and all nerves you felt at this very moment.
‘Just any other job.’ You thought to yourself, boldly going up the steps and pulling the hatch down before you could think otherwise. ‘Any other job, with any other monster.’
Nerves rattling inside your body, your fight or flight response was on the verge of kicking in as you readied yourself to get attacked. Despite being a slight nervous wreck when ascending these very stairs, you were still a trained huntress that could kill anything if you wanted.
“What an anticlimactic feeling…” you chuckled out breathlessly, surprised when you didn’t find yourself attacked the moment you opened the hatch. “I was expecting a brutal death from you…”
You actually made it inside the attic and shivered when you felt the freezing chill of a spirit within the room. A smirk playing on your lips as you had found your target. “Hah, hiding won’t do you justice. Any rookie hunter could sense the chill of a ghost no matter how faint.”
Your nerves settled to a sea of calm as you waited for a response from the room. Standing dead center in the middle as you took in your surroundings of the dark and dusty attic. A room not frequently visited by the looks of things, as all the furniture was cracked and old, the floor encased in a fine layer of thick and cakey dust.
‘Well this room has seen better days–’ your eyes widened as you narrowly dodged an oncoming vase headed for your skull, your instincts saving you yet again.
“Woah–!”
It shattered into one corner of the room, breaking into millions of tiny pieces and alerting your senses to a higher degree. “Haha! Now I really know you're in here!” instead of being afraid, you laughed nonchalantly and seemed to be enjoying the way you exposed it. The ‘it’ in question seemingly getting more and more angry as the room dropped a few degrees colder.
A picture frame rattled before being flung off the wall. Flying towards your head, but narrowly missing as your insane reflexes kicked in and dodged it. A chair suddenly slid across the room and towards you at a rapid pace, your legs instinctively moving out of the way, and even twirling as you seemed to be having fun with this.
“Ah! You’re really good at this,” you chuckled, ducking under a flying alarm clock and watching as the room suddenly started getting louder and louder the more these objects came to life. “Hey–! There’s a toaster!”
You could just feel the atmosphere getting heavier with anger as the spirit in the room seemed livid with how you were dodging its attacks with ease. All at once, as if movement didn’t exist, the objects in the room stopped their movements and a mirror was pulled out from underneath a white cloth. Skittering to a stop right in front of you as the ghost started scratching out some letters in jagged, ear-piercing lines.
“GET OWT!!!” read the thin scratches as silence filled the once loud and chaotic attic. All the objects falling to the ground at once whilst you read the words and contemplated on what to say.
“...Hmm,” you tilted your head at the words before a smile overtook your features, “Hehe, you spelled out wrong. It has a U.”
…Silence.
Pure silence.
And then another scratch started forming under the word OWT. Smaller, more quieter scratches soon following after and forming the word “UWT?” Question mark and all.
“Pfft. No no no,” you giggled and breathed out a hot breath of air against the mirror. Your breath steaming up the glass, while you used your pointer finger to write out the correct spelling of ‘out.’
“See? The U is where the W is. There’s no W in out.”
You felt a cold chill right next to you, and assumed the spirit had taken a presence beside you.
“OUT.” the ghost wrote underneath the UWT. Impressing you with how calm it was being, despite trying to kill you moments prior. Could the aggressive poltergeist you were after be a child?
“Great job!” you exclaimed joyously, breathing steam against the mirror again and writing “GET OUT” in proper spelling to show the spirit how it looked like in proper English. “Try writing it like this.”
“GET OUT.” The words perfectly mimicked yours –although a bit more sloppy– and you’ve never felt prouder.
“Ah, you did it!” you cheered, “You’re amazing!”
Your eyes widened when you caught glimpse of a young woman in the reflection of the mirror. Her face seemingly surprised before disappearing in an instant once you noticed her.
Okay…so your target was definitely not a child…
“You’re a woman?!” you exclaimed rather loudly, the cold spot beside you suddenly getting warmer.
“...Yes.” was the ghost’s answer as it scratched the word rather sloppily.
“Oh, I see…” you stared at the cracked mirror in wonder and amusement. “I didn’t expect a ghost as old as you to be so bad at writing.”
You ducked as a teacup lunged at the back of your skull. Shattering against the cracked mirror and falling into pieces at your feet. Uh oh, it seems as if you pissed her off.
“Wah! I didn’t mean it as an insult!” you waved your hands shakily and turned to face the emptiness beside you. Despite not seeing anything at all, you could still feel the animosity right beside you and stared as if you were making dead eye contact. “I mean…I just found it, y’know. Kinda cute.” The cold chill in the air grew warmer. “Such a vengeful spirit like yourself calming down like this. I’ve never seen anything like it.”
The lonely attic sat idly for a while. Your words lingering like a wisp of smoke as there was no response from the vengeful spirit.
“If you want…” you began, eyes trailing over to the cracked mirror in front of you, “I could teach you how to write proper English.”
More silence followed. Though you could sense a tinge of uneasiness in the air as the entity beside you grew faint, almost invisible as you could barely detect her at all. “Miss?” you whispered out quietly, eyes widening when you felt something cold wrap around your hand and pull your body like an invisible string, dragging your hand over to where the ghost was writing, and splaying your fingers over a word.
“Yes.” You whispered, a shiver running down your spine as you realized that the ghost woman was touching you. Holding your hand with hers, and helping guide your body to the response she wanted to tell you.
“Alright then,” you gasped with a baited breath, fingers twitching under the frosty feeling,  “I’ll teach you.”
Tumblr media
To say your intentions were pure was a lie. I mean, it wasn’t a complete lie, you did want to help her study, but you weren’t exactly a good person to her to begin with. The whole spiel of wanting to help her improve was all a ploy to get her to be compliant. A peaceful and willing ghost was always an easier ghost to exorcize, and what better way than to make this spirit compilable than to befriend her through lessons? Admittedly, this was deception at its finest. But it’s not like you haven’t done this before! You were a monster hunter, and this was your job.
You held your breath as you gazed up at the Li-Mei residence above you. This time with a children’s alphabet book under your arm, and a few school supplies to match on your belt. You looked more like a school teacher than a monster hunter if anything, but you swallowed up any leftover pride you had and made your way up to the front porch. From your peripheral vision, you caught the curtains of the attic window shift, and looked up to see a young woman dart away as quickly as you looked. A small smile stretching over your face, as you contemplated on whether or not to wave.
‘Makes me wonder if she watched me walk in from the very first day.’
Your hand went to reach for the doorknob only to remember that you had broken it beforehand. “Oh, ha! Silly me,” you grinned and simply kicked the door open with your boot, shining your flashlight in through the dark and musty house, as you had half expected for the spirit to be waiting for you. “I hope she didn’t mind me breaking down her door…”
Not like she’d even need to use the door…
“Yoohoo! Madam Ghost!” You cheered through the hollow walls, “I’ve come to help you study!”
Silence.
“…You can’t hide from this, I’ve already purchased this Sesame Street book from the shop and there’s no going back.” Realizing that the ghost must be hiding upstairs, you let out a pathetic groan and quickly made your way up in order to confront her. “Madam Ghost!”
You grabbed the cord to the attic and yanked it open only to scream when a dinner plate hurled at your face. “Son of a—!” luckily your reflexes saved you as you ducked just in time to avoid the porcelain piece shattering in your eye. “Miss Ghost!”
Annoyed with this sudden attitude, you gripped your exorcist book hidden just beneath your alphabet one and prepared yourself to deal with a violent spirit. “What was that for?!” You felt the hairs of your neck stand on end as a ghostly shiver passed from just behind you. The dusty layering on the floor shaking as jagged letters formed words from the poltergeist’s invisible touch.
“Sory.” Read the ghost’s wobbly handwriting. “It was just a pranc.”
“It’s not a very funny one,” you scoffed, sitting down right in front of the handwriting and fixing her spelling. “I could’ve lost an eye.”
The ghost’s chilling prescience lingered closer to your warm, living body. Practically standing over you as you could feel the cold breath of death brushing over your forehead. “This is how you properly spell it,” you spoke calmly, despite your flight or fight response kicking in. “Sorry. It was just a prank.”
You felt the cold prescience draw closer and had assumed that the ghost was now sitting right in front of you, writing a sloppy trail of letters that loosely resembled yours, and even trying to write it small just like you.
“Hm. Not bad,” you noted, plopping the Sesame Street book down and gesturing to a dusty patch on the ground. “Can you write your name? I’d like to put a name to my student please.”
Wow, you really did feel like a school teacher.
Some silence followed after your request, and you contemplated on whether or not you should take it back as you were unsure if the ghost was comfortable or not. Before you could open your mouth to say anything however, a sudden shift in the dust caused your eyes to settle.
“Ah! Hu…Tao.” You read aloud at the sloppy array of words. “Hu Tao. Your name is Hu Tao?”
A quick scribble of “yes” was written right beside it.
“Hu Tao! Ah, what a pretty name,” you complimented, the room growing warmer for a brief second before resuming its chilly state. “That’s of Chinese origin, yes?”
Your hand was pulled along by that same ghostly string and sprawled against the previous “yes.” So cute! The ghost was holding your hand!
“Ah…” your eyes trailed over to where the ghost held you and noted the buzzing chill in your nerves at the sensation. It was cold, unfamiliar, and far from comfortable, but you endured it because you thought the action itself was cute for such a violent entity. “I see you like holding my hand.” You chuckled, smiling even more when your hand regained its warmth, indicating that Hu Tao had let go.
“Aww, so soon?” You giggled playfully and opened one of your alphabet books. “Well that’s okay, we’re going to be studying now anyways.”
You pointed to a pencil and flipped to the very first page of the book, starting with the letter A and its lowercase counterpart to make things easy. “Miss…Hu Tao. Can you move that pencil and follow the dotted lines here? We’re going to be working on your handwriting because uh…well,” you shifted your eyes over to the wobbly letters of English that could barely be comprehended as English. “It’s not the best.”
A rush of cold air blew towards the back of your neck and you only shivered in response. Picking up the pencil with your hand and extending it out towards the air beside you.
“Here. Try writing with this.”
You didn’t really expect anything to happen but lo and behold, the spirit grabbed the utensil from your hand. ‘So gentle…’ you remarked, watching as the pencil shakily lifted itself from your fingers and pointed downwards towards the book. “Yeah, you got it,” you mimicked the pen with your finger and traced a slanted line upwards to start writing an uppercase A. “A small line going up, and then a similar one going down.”
You dragged your finger downwards, and if Hu Tao was visible right now, you’d see just how hard she was concentrating just for you. The pencil in her grip shaking as she formed a trembling line from start to finish, all the while glancing at you every so often.
“Pretty good for your first try,” you hummed, now taking your finger and dragging a middle line to connect the two slants. “Now draw a smaller line connecting these two, to form an uppercase A.”
Hu Tao did so. Yet she did so all too sloppily as she wasn’t looking at the paper, but rather at you. You couldn’t see it, obviously; but Hu Tao was indeed looking at you. The glare of violence and brutality no longer present, as it was only replaced with wonder and curiosity.
You were cloaked in leather, yes; and despite not knowing much English, Hu Tao was smart enough to realize that you were a monster hunter. Probably paid to come here and exorcize her is what she assumed, yet despite trying to drive you out and even kill you multiple times, you retained that same innocent smile and laugh. It was unnerving, which is ironic for a spirit of her level, but Hu Tao couldn’t help but feel relieved that you were so nice to her. Even if it were a trick, some foul play to kill her in the end, Hu Tao couldn’t help but feel as if she had finally met someone she could potentially talk to in all her years of isolation.
“Miss Hu Tao?” your brow crinkled as the pencil was now dragging lazily off the dotted line, off the paper, and scratching onto the hardwood floor. “Miss Hu Tao?!”
You watched as the pencil jerked and caused the streak of lead to make an ugly turn upwards. “Oh, sorry…” you sucked air through your teeth at the ruined uppercase A before smiling. “Well, that’s why erasers exist, right? To fix all our unwanted mistakes.”
Hu Tao couldn’t agree more and eagerly flipped the pencil over to erase the embarrassingly long streak from when she zoned out.
Tumblr media
“And that’s how you write a lowercase Q…”
Your voice barely above a whisper, your eyes narrowed in on the near perfect lowercase Q that Hu Tao had drawn after hours of practice with the letters before. You had to admit, for a ghost with horrible motor skills, Hu Tao was a very fast learner. So much so that you basically speed ran the alphabet and managed to get to the letter Q by late in the evening.
“Wow…that’s near perfect…” you yawned, Hu Tao practically buzzing with excitement at your praise and resisting the urge to hug you right then and there.
‘Near perfect! She’s so impressed! I impressed her!’
Nearly about to do cartwheels on the attic floor, Hu Tao glanced at your face to see whether you were smiling, and paused when she saw your eyes fluttering closed like a butterfly’s wings resting in the wind. ‘Sleepy?’ Hu Tao questioned, watching as you struggled to stay awake due to your instinct as a hunter. You were used to staying up on restless nights due to your job mostly taking place at night, yet for some reason you were extra sleepy today as you let your body relax around Hu Tao for the majority of the mission. ‘Ah. I forgot. Living humans need to sleep often to stay healthy.’
Hu Tao watched with curiosity as you consciously tried to fight the sleepiness in order to continue teaching her. Yet the coldness of the attic just felt so…alluring. And all the dust scattered around you two did not aid much in helping you stay awake.
“Next…page…” you sighed, losing the battle to sleep as the weak human inside the hunter submitted to the depths of slumber. “Going onto R…”
Hu Tao panicked as you began to slump over and rushed around the attic to find something soft for you to fall in. Finding a dusty throw pillow and shaking all the dust off before sliding it between your soft head and hardwood floor.
Plop. Went your head as sleep deprivation had taken over and made you fall deep asleep despite the dangerous circumstance. It was so unlike you to be this sleepy while on the job, but since you were so relaxed around Hu Tao your body couldn’t help itself.
‘That was close…!’ Hu Tao remarked as she watched your unconscious body rise and fall with every passing breath. ‘Almost smashed her skull in…’
Hu Tao passed over to your sleeping body as quietly as she could. Watching as you dozed off soundly and almost unprofessionally as well, a hunter sleeping on the job was nothing to be proud of. And quite frankly, Hu Tao was sure you’d get fired if your higher ups ever caught wind of this.
Yet the spirit couldn’t help but find your sleeping figure cute. And stupid. But mostly cute as you were cozy enough to slumber in the presence of a vengeful spirit. A vengeful spirit that just so happened to be her, and a vengeful spirit that just so happened to find you endearing.
‘The living are way too trusting,’ Hu Tao thought, leaning over to where you were sleeping and watching as your lips parted slightly to exhale every time your chest fell. ‘Especially this one.’
Shifting to lie on her stomach, Hu Tao propped her head up on her hands and watched as your hair cascaded over your face like a curtain. Blocking your simple beauty from her sight, and causing her to shift in frustration as she wanted to stare at you more.
…Was that creepy? Well, for a ghost’s standards, maybe not…
Hu Tao couldn’t help herself as she shifted her ghostly body to brush the stray locks away. Your brows scrunching up in your sleep as her cold presence made you shiver. ‘Cold…’ Hu Tao noted, turning her hand to look at it with crestfallen eyes. ‘I’m cold…’
Was it selfish of her to want to keep touching you? Hu Tao let her frosty fingers trail over your leather-covered arm, watching as your body trembled under her touch. Cold. She was cold to you. But your body was just so warm. So warm and full of life, pumped with a body full of warm blood and flesh. How Hu Tao missed the feeling so…
‘This one is so naive…’ Hu Tao gazed up at your heavy eyelids and ended up lying right beside you. Gazing adoringly at you as if you two were lovers in a painting. ‘And yet so beautiful she is…’
If there was anything that Hu Tao learned in her years of purgatory isolation, it was that eternal loneliness was a punishment worse than death. And to have such a friendly soul come wandering up just to see her…she swears she’s never felt more alive.
It was almost like you were an angel sent down to save her.
“Y…/N…” Hu Tao spoke gently, her first words uttered since meeting you. “Y…/N.”
You had told her your name a few alphabet lessons beforehand, and told her that if she managed to write your name neatly, you’d give her a wish. Hu Tao had never been so determined before to earn said desired wish. “Y…/N!” She sounded out in her own whispery voice, pulling the alphabet book from beside you and deciding to study on her own.
She was determined to get that wish.
She knew what she wanted from you.
Tumblr media
Days had blended into weeks and before you knew it, you were coming to visit Hu Tao on a daily basis. What started as simple English lessons to ease her spirit had slowly turned into something more, and while you didn’t want to admit it, you were slowly growing attached.
Taboo. Growing attached to a monster while being a monster hunter was taboo. Your job was to kill her, not befriend her. But it seemed like your body was betraying your morals as you couldn’t help but find the invisible spirit endearing. Was it possible to love something you couldn’t see? You hoped it wasn’t the case, as you found the company of the invisible girl comforting.
Hey, you had gotten better at scaling the hill! You watched as you set your foot on the last step without having to wheeze like you were an old lawn mower. Finding comfort in the way your boots sank into the gravel, as before they were only a hindrance to your hike uphill. “Hu Tao, I'm here!” you called up at the broken attic window, waiting for the curtains to shift to indicate her presence. “Hu Tao!”
Odd. Usually she’d be waiting by the window for you.
“...Hm.” You made your way comfortably up the front steps and traversed through the house with ease. No longer feeling any anxiety or panic as you had done this routinely multiple times. “Maybe she’s just busy with her homework…”
Shrugging it off as something of no concern, you grabbed the cord to the attic door and yanked it down, ready to step into an empty attic room like you always did. Instead however, you walked in on something –or rather, someone– you did not expect to see.
A young woman was sitting on the floor of the dusty attic, scribbling with a pencil you left her and surrounded by several sheets of notebook paper torn from the journal you bought. She didn’t seem to notice you at all, all too absorbed in her kid-like scribbling and it’s there that you realize the whole attic is covered in papers! Circling the woman like some sort of beginner’s ritual as the papers were scattered on the walls, furniture, even ceiling!
“...Hu Tao?!” your eyes widened when you felt a ghostly presence coming from the woman. ‘Wait. That’s Hu Tao?!’
You watched as the woman before you stopped scribbling and turned to see who was calling her name. Eyes lighting up once she saw you and eagerly standing up to greet you. “Y/N!” she cheered, your brain doing a double take as this was also your first time hearing Hu Tao’s voice.
“Ah, so it is you,” you chuckled, still in shock from seeing Hu Tao’s physical form and hearing her voice. “This is…the first time I’ve actually seen you,” you muttered, noting how livly her eyes looked despite being long deceased. “You look cute.”
She perked up at your compliment before laughing to herself and nodding. “Hah! Yeah, I’ve been told that a couple times back when I was alive.” She seemed to emit a feeling of bashfulness from the way she was speaking. Who knew a dead person could have so much personality? “I haven’t been able to show myself in a while because I never really felt the need to. It takes up quite a bit of my energy however, so I’d need to use it wisely.”
“That’s…interesting,” you clicked your tongue at this reveal and tilted your head in confusion. “But why show yourself now?”
“Oh! Well, you see…” Hu Tao picked up one of the scattered papers on the ground and handed it to you, your hands reaching over to brush against the floating object and turning it over to see your name.
‘Y/N.’
Your name written all over the sheet. Scattered as loosely as the papers around you as each individual letter grew more and more neater with each passing stroke. Y/N. Y/N. Y/N. All rambunctiously ordered in a swerving line that tried its best to straighten itself the further it drew on.
Y/N. Y/N. Y/N.
When you looked down at the papers at your feet, it was there that you noticed that all the papers around the attic had your name written on it. Your name only in a sea of scribbles and ink as somewhere along the way, Hu Tao must’ve broken a pencil or two. “Hu Tao…?” you seemed incredibly confused (and rightfully so) as your eyes slowly started to dart over to the ceiling. “What is this?”
Should you be creeped out? Your gut is yelling “YES?!” but your brain is going “I’m curious though, let’s wait.” And so, you listened to your brain because let’s be honest, even I’m curious too.
“Remember when you told me that if I had perfected writing your name, you’d grant me a wish?” Hu Tao spoke with a giggle.
Oh.
So this is what this is about.
“Ah, yes but–” Hu Tao rushed off before you could say anything more.
“I’ve perfected it! I can write your name Y/N!”
Never in your life had you seen a ghost so excited before. Zooming around with giddy as if she were told that she had just won the lottery.
“You’ve really been practicing all this time?” you murmured in awe, watching as one by one, the papers sticking to the ceiling fell like a paper shower.
“Yep! Ever since I could write the alphabet, I was dead set on learning your name!” she floated around the attic with the grace of a dragonfly. Zipping and zooming through the air in a way that made you think she was actually a fae. “Found one!”
You looked up and nearly choked on air as Hu Tao floated down to stand right in front of you. Her locks of brown hair floating idly like gravity never existed, all the while her eyes seemed to glow with a strange jack-o-lantern-like light that made you feel warm rather than creeped out.
“Watch this!” came her haunting voice as she scribbled some letters onto the paper she picked out and showed it to you with the enthusiasm of a child. “Look! Look! It’s your name! I wrote your name!”
And she did. Your pupils widening at the sight as Hu Tao had successfully written your name in correct spelling, perfect size, and perfect calligraphy. A feat to most certainly be proud of as you had only begun teaching Hu Tao proper English for about two weeks.
“It’s beautiful…” you muttered, tracing the straight lines with your finger and watching as Hu Tao lit up at your praise. “And you practiced writing on all of these papers?” You lifted your foot which now had a Y/N paper sticking underneath it.
“Yep! That’s what I did last night since you left,” Hu Tao hummed. “Now can I have my wish?”
“Hm, you are quite demanding. Though that’s not surprising considering how your first words to me were ‘Get out.’” She pouted at your words. “Butttt, you did write fifty something pages of my name for practice. And you did get it perfectly written.”
“Actually I wrote seventy two pages of your name.” Hu Tao clarified.
“Hm, yes, your practice definitely paid off too,” you chuckled. “What would you like to wish for?”
Hu Tao was hesitant in saying what she wanted before reaching her ghostly pale arms out and enveloping your hands with her own. That frosty feeling you’ve grown to love slowly numbing your senses and causing your skin to prickle with goosebumps as she raised your hands to her face.
“Y/N. I want to be with you.”
Your mind had short-circuited. Did you hear her correctly?
“...I want you to take me away from here.”
Her eyes looked so sad and sombered. Mellow with a dread of loneliness you’ve never seen on a person until now. “I want you to help me leave this place. I want to be with you and live with you forever…please.”
She looked so serious. Desperate even as she pleaded for you with her cold, dead eyes to help her be free of this eternal purgatory. ‘I want to be with you.’ Her words echoed, and you felt the one emotion you’ve forced to disappear now re-emerge at the simple begging of a trapped ghost. An emotion that all monster hunters must hide for fear of the guilt that comes after finishing off a job.
Empathy.
“...Okay.” Your voice sounded hoarse, defeated by the choice you had made up in your mind. “Really?!” Hu Tao blinked in surprise. “Yeah.” You mumbled, trying to smile like your life depended on it. “There’s a ritual I can do to relocate spirits if they’re forever trapped in one place. I could transfer you to my house and you can live there with me from now on.”
If you thought Hu Tao was happy then, oh boy, she was ecstatic now.
“Living with you…in your house…” Hu Tao muttered to herself, the room growing warmer as the papers around you started floating due to her excitement. “I’d love that more than anything else! Really I would!”
And then she threw her arms around you. Embracing you in a cold hug and yet she still felt more alive than anything you’ve ever felt before. The scattered papers with your name on them flying around like a whirlwind as Hu Tao was simply too excited not to show it. “Thank you thank you thank you thank you Y/N!” she laughed, a noise akin to a windchime since it was the prettiest thing you’ve heard in a while.
“...No, thank you.” You murmured quietly, hesitantly embracing the trapped geist as you wondered if you’d soon regret your decision.
You really hoped you wouldn’t.
Tumblr media
When you walked up the broken steps leading up to Hu Tao’s house, you felt your mood dampen despite the sunny skies hanging up above. How mocking. The sun just loved to tease you when you were at your lowest point. ‘Please let this go smoothly…’ you told yourself as you looked up at the familiar broken mailbox and police tape-covered porch you’ve come to grow used to. ‘Please don’t let anything go South…’
The walk up the porch steps felt like entering hell. The walk from the first floor to the second felt like walking through flames. The walk from the second floor to the hatch of the attic felt like you were about to greet Satan. A churning feeling in your stomach replacing the once comfortable feeling you’ve felt from all your times visiting Hu Tao. No longer did you feel the same. You knew what you had to do at this moment, and you hoped everything would go to plan.
Reaching up to grab at the cord of the hatch, you gasped when it suddenly flung open and almost lost your balance. However, something cold and comforting caught you before you could fall, and hoisted you up the steps before closing the hatch on your way in.
“WAH–!”
“Y/N!” came Hu Tao’s excited voice, “Almost had a nasty fall there. Wouldn’t want anything happening to my favorite flesh person!”
She set you down with the grace of a gentle wind and moved to be in your line of sight. Wow. Did she get prettier or is the lighting from the sun making her glow?
“Hu Tao…” you smiled at her giddiness and dropped your satchel to the ground. “Thanks for catching me. I probably would’ve fallen on my ass if you hadn’t.”
“No problem! After all, how could my favorite flesh person do the ritual correctly if her buns are bruised!”
Ah. Right. The ritual.
“So that’s what’s got you so excited.” You chuckled. “I thought you’d be happier to see me.”
“I am happy to see you! I’m just even happier because I get to be with you now!”
Oh. That plucked a heart string.
“Hah, understandable…” you avoided her gaze and picked up the satchel you dropped to go to the middle. “I brought all the things needed for the ritual. All you have to do is stand here in the middle and relax.”
“Aye aye captain!” Hu Tao saluted as she hovered over to stand where you set your foot. “I can’t wait to be free with you…”
“Me too.”
Taking out a huge canister of salt, you started pouring it into a large circle surrounding Hu Tao whilst she whistled nonchalantly. Eagerly waiting for you to finish the ritual so she could be free from this wretched attic once more. “Is your attic clean, Y/N?”
“Not really, but you won’t be staying there at all. I can’t imagine moving into another attic after spending your whole life here.” You completed the circle and tossed the canister away behind you, dusting off the excess particles stuck to your skin so your hands wouldn’t feel grainy.
“You mean I get to roam around in your house?!“ Hu Tao exclaimed excitedly.
“Mhm!” You smiled and started pulling out a few candles you bought from the town store and setting them around within an even distance around Hu Tao. “My house will be your house.”
Hu Tao’s cheeks glowed at those words as she watched you light each and every candle with a matchstick pulled from the hole of your sleeve. With each candle ignited, Hu Tao felt as if her own soul was being cast aflame due to her overbearing adoration to be with you. Her savior. Her angel.
She wanted to be with you forever.
“Just try to relax and stay calm,” you voiced as you took your spot at the front of the circle.
“I promise this won’t hurt. That is the last thing I want.”
“You could never hurt me, Y/N.” Hu Tao assured.
But you just might.
“Whatever happens, Hu Tao,” you spoke as you flipped through the pages of your ritual book, “Promise me you won’t be scared?”
“I promise.”
You smiled somberly at her words before looking up to stare at her eyes one more time. Trailing over the flower-like pupils you had grown to adore and forever sinking them into your memory. “Your eyes are beautiful, by the way,” you whispered. “I hope they haunt my dreams every time I sleep…”
Turning to the tattered pages of your book, you lifted it up to read and began chanting in old latin. A small wind picking up in the otherwise silent attic and blowing at the candles surrounding Hu Tao.
‘Just relax…’ you told Hu Tao, but it was mostly towards yourself. ‘Please relax…’
From the corner of your eye you caught Hu Tao smiling. The wind picking up more violently as she stared at you in astonishment. “It’s working!” Hu Tao squealed, lifting her arms up as if she were a kite about to be carried away. “It’s working, it's working!” You felt your body tremble as you kept chanting the words. “I feel so light…”
You smiled sadly at her joy, tears pricking at the corners of your eyes when she laughed. ‘I’m glad…’
“Thank you Y/N! Thank you, thank you, thank you!” you watched as Hu Tao’s ghostly figure started tearing up out of happiness, her body fading away into particles that mimicked lightning bugs flying into the night sky. “I love you so much.”
And as quick as she came into your life, she was gone.
The wind had stopped blowing, the candles had all melted, and you were left alone in a cold and dusty attic, quivering with the book in your hand as you stared at the now empty circle right in front of you. “...Rest in peace, Hu Tao.” You whispered, clasping your hands together in prayer before bowing. “I loved being with you too…”
Kneeling down to reach into your satchel once more, you took out a small pot and filled it to the brim with salt. Placing three incense sticks into it and lighting them all up with a match. As smoke filled the now lifeless attic room, you prayed one more time before biting your lip in order to stop yourself from crying.
“I’m sorry I lied to you.”
Standing up and wiping your watery eyes away, you quickly put on your hunter facade again and left the dusty attic. The sunlight finally breaching in through the window and giving warmth to the room after so many years.
You hated the warmth.
