Namor Week 2023

Day 4 - Alternate Universe

Miyamoto Namor was created by Greg Pak and Steven Segovia. He appeared in X-Treme X-Men (2013) 10 and 11.

In his universe, he left Atlantis to fight for Imperial Japan and Xavier brought the British over to the side of the Axis, who won WWII. After the war, Xavier killed the leaders of his allies to rule supreme. Atlantis then flooded the world, killing most of the surface dwellers. While Namor was confronting Atlantis, Xavier destroyed them in a sneak attack.

Miyamoto Namor had been searching for this evil version of Xavier for a decade, when X-Men team of variants appeared and discovered Xavier, prompting a long over due clash between the two mutants of Earth 13410.

Hey out of curiosity, I know most of the main cast in CTB is pulled from either Legend of Zelda game canons (Princess Zelda, Lana, Ganondorf in name, etc) or Linked Universe, but out of your original characters (especially Kat, Marigold, and the various Knights of Hyrule), did u give any of them symbolic or referential names?

Oh boy do I got the fun post for you:

Lincoln is straight up my Linksona. Just think of him as another version of the character Link

Marigold is supposed to be the typical red-headed love interest for a Link-like character; even her name is meant to fit right in with characters like Malon, Marin, and Midna.

Warriors's last name was originally going to be Warton, but I changed it to Walton when I learned that it meant "noble."

Meemaw is a reference to the Bertolt Brecht character Mother Courage (from his play Mother Courage and Her Children; I had just finished reading it for a seminar class when CTB first came to me). The characters even share a first name: Anna

Similarly, Kat is based off of Mother Courage's daughter, Kattrin; a famously silent-due-to-truama character

Kat's siblings also share names and fates with Mother Courage's sons: Eli is Eilif, and Cheddar is Swiss Cheese (yes, that's his real name)

Orlanda was named for Virginia Woolf's famous character Orlando; originally, I was going to have Orlanda be nonbinary, but changed my mind when I realized it wouldn't be a good idea to make your sacrificial character your nonbinary representation.

Shigeo's name was originally just going to be Shig, as a reference to Shigeru Miyamoto, but I changed it when I started to rewatch Mob Psycho 100. Shigeo is meant to be a homage to a common original character type I kept reading in Warriors-centric fics: the young Sheikah guy for Warriors to have a romance with. However, Shigeo was never envisioned with a romantic relationship in mind. He was always meant to be this cool, older guy type. However, I did almost have Warriors have a crush on him, then deleted that concept for space.

Gaudin was named after a French criminal for no reason. Genuinely, I just liked the name.

Anders was originally going to be named Betolt in honor of Brecht, but that felt heavy handed.

Jakucho is just meant to be the old woman version of the general Impa character to match the badass young woman version that is actually in Hyrule Warriors. Her name means "silent, lonely listening." I liked how it related to her role as Warriors's mentor/therapist.

Impa's real name, Chiyo, means "thousand generations, thousand worlds." I like how it related to the idea that she's always wanted to assume the same role as her ancestors.

I originally picked their surname Miyashita because the site I was on said it translated to something like "temple below the earth," which would reference the Kakariko Well. Checking now, it actually means "(one who lives) below the shrine," which makes way more sense in retrospect.

Ayane has no special name meaning, but her character... you do realize she's just Mask, right?

General Whitestone's name came from me asking myself what would a highly suspicious white guy in charge be called?

The name Nephus translates to "a God's son who will also become a God." Do I mean that literally? Who knows. At the very least, I wanted a snappy, but impressive-sounding name.

Vasileios means "royal or kingly". His middle name, Orionides, implies that he's the son of a great hunter.

Icarius's name is meant to be reminiscent to that of Icaurs, the famous mythological figure.

Philo means "lover or friend." A very cute name for a not-so-cute boy.

You probably have realized that the House of Nephus characters are heavily Greek/Roman coded. Originally, they were going to be Russian coded, but then the line about Faovaria being unable to attack some other kingdom due to their harsh winters would have fallen into question.

Faovaria's symbol being an octopus is a reference to how the octopuses symbolized immortality in ancient Greece.

Both of those were super off-topic. Sorry lol

I'll end with a fun fact you shouldn't look too deep into: the empire name Faovaria is derived from Farore. This was due to a concept I changed my mind about. Genuinely, it's not relevant anymore. Do not incorporate it into your theories, or something.

Some thoughts about One Piece on Ice

Thanks to some help by one kind fan I managed to watch One Piece on Ice. 😍 Thank you so much! ❤️

Admittedly I probably wouldn't have watched the show if Shoma wouldn't be the star of the show. I was so interested to see his character portrayal because it's so out of Shoma's own character.

But before I talk about Shoma here are some other thoughts...

First of all I am quite clueless about the anime or manga of One Piece which probably would have helped to understand the story better because I don't own any Japanese language skills, so I won't say anything about the story. I just wish I could appreciate the whole story better. (I have basic knowledge of the characters and I watched a couple anime episodes when I was like 12 years old so 😅)

I think anyone who has seen pictures of the show, knows how amazing the costumes are and how close they are to their animation counterpart (I mean at least I know the characters with my less than good one piece knowledge)

It's quite a different than usual ice show. It really tells a complete story, no "extra" skating to just show off, every skating is implemented into the story. It really feels more like a theatre on ice than an actual ice show. It's not easy to produce a theatre that needs to tell a story from 3 viewing angles. Usually theatres are directed to watch from the front. Here it's watched from 3 sides, which on a stream made it sometimes difficult to see the conversation that was going on but in the arena it's needed. (Tbf no stream or video can ever give justice to a theatre production no matter if on ice or in theatre just because the circumstances are wildly different. I won't elaborate on that but let you tell this by a musical nerd who watched countless musicals live and on screen)

The choreography ideas are great. Especially cool are the choreographies for the fight scenes, each fight scene has a different set up. The spcial effects on top of it are so cool. Congrats to Kenji Miyamoto for this show and also congrats to the lighting and special effects designers. These things really add a lot.

The ACTING!!! OMG the acting is so good for an ice show. These are skaters not actors (besides Miyu) and all of them do an amazing job. There is a lot text going on especially for Marin, who is actually the main star of the show, no one has as much to do besides her and she is emoting so well to an audience. She really should be thinking about going to theatre. Rika Hongo is one of my favorite characters in this whole show. This suits her so well. How she can implements the skating skills into the character and how she is never off charater. And SHOMA OMG OMG OMG 🔥 🔥 🔥 🔥 How can this be Shoma? He can act. Like really. He's full of energy, full of different expressions, he is a come to life animated character, acting over the top like it's suited to the character and on top he does skills on ice I haven't seen him do anywhere before. Admittedly I was sceptical about Shoma acting and on top such a "quirky" character, but they couldn't found a better person for it.

I applaud the full cast for their acting. And they stayed in character until the very end until the curtain call.

It's a great show from the ideas, to the choreography, to the costumes, to the acting! ❤️

What an amazing show! 😍

Do I have any negative points about the show? 🤔 Well only one thing...the availability for ppl outside Japan is a disaster. I know countless ppl who would have paid to see the show on stream but weren't able to because of the geoblocking and trouble finding a working vpn or credit card. It probably has to do with copyright but then at least give the fans an explanation...The other small critique is simply on me personally😅...without knowing Japanese or One Piece it was not the full experience it would surely give...but you know what maybe that actually gives me a reason to really learn Japanese and to watch the anime/manga 😉

If anyone wants to and is able to watch. Do it, you won't be disappointed!

I finished Jojo: Diamond is Unbreakable! (Spoilers under the cut)

First of all: WOW! What a show! :D I knew when I first saw it it was gonna be great, but it feels amazing to finally watch and finish it! :D The Morioh Warriors all stole my heart (With the exception of like- the short dude with the lock stand Kobayashi- he was kinda annoying)

JOTARO!!! God my heart's in love with this man with each new part; I really liked him in Part 3, but Part 4??? Glorious. I love a handsome stoic Marine Biologist who helps out the kiddos.

Speaking of: Can we talk about Josuke? My god I hadn't expected to love him as much as I do; he's by far my second favorite Jojo! (Fave is still Giorno- we'll get to that in a minute). He's just so funny and heroic; I really enjoyed his character immensely!

Also: Okuyasu? It's a Kakyoin situation all over! First I was like: ??? Then I was like: AHHHH! Cause he's just so amazing GOD! I love the "Kinda dumb but insanely heroic" type of characters!

Koichi is a doll! Voiced by the VA of Tanjiro and a sweetheart through and through? MY HEART!!! He and Yukako's relationship took me by surprise a little, but I do think they're cute :D

Can I yell about Rohan? By far my favorite character outside the main squad. Manga artist, dresses fabulously, kinda snooty but also hilarious and bold? (Kinda acts like Squidward) He's got a spot on my "All Time Favorite Characters" List!

Kira was such a great villain! He made my skin crawl and his whole vibe is kinda ugly (I'm sorry- that hair he sported by the end? Not my cup of tea. Also he's got a punchable face.) But he was so despicable that it worked wonderfully for the villain role! His ending was so satisfying- and that final battle had me on the edge of my seat!

MIKITAKA!!! I loved him! I was surprised to find out about the whole alien thing, but I love him to death! He's charming to watch and the way he helped out the crew was so sweet! I was kinda hoping we'd see more of him, but I'm glad we got what we got!

Lightning Round Thoughts:

Best stand User: Miyamoto (Mr. Paper guy); Worst Stand User: Fungami (Kudos in the fight against Miyamoto but ehhh....not my favorite character). Joseph: 10/10 loved to see him again! The ending was satisfying but also really sad (My heart aches for Hayato and his mom); The entire part was amazing from start to finish- I'd definitely rewatch it! :D

Onto part 5 baby! I'm four episodes in and already I'm in love!

Shortly after Marinal joined the plot of the episode I started thinking her voice sounded familiar.Seems her actor was Yume Miyamoto and after cross-comparison to her other notable roles versus things I’ve actually watched the only truly definite answer I can give is I remember her as Hitomi Hino from Seton Academy.

The only other option I have is Rumia from Akashic Records.Very different from Yoko in episode one since I have four different characters that have helped me seal the quality of audio delivery by Saori Hayami.Those specifically being:

A Strange, New World:  mysterymanjoseph and lustimpacted

To escape his new responsibilities, at least for a little while, of running his family’s corporation since his return from service in the Marine Corps, Joseph takes to hiking in the deep woods, as he is doing now.  Besides the rucksack with survival gear and food on his back, he is carrying two precious gifts, swords made for him by a master sword smith from Japan.  Joseph had saved the man’s grandson during a firefight in the Afghanistan mountains, and the old man had a vision apparently after being told the news, immediately starting to craft the blades from a lump of ore that had been passed down through the family line for a couple hundred years or so.  Supposedly, one of the ancestors had seen the ‘heart of a dying star’ fall to the ground, and picked it up, a keepsake that kept being passed down until present day.  Now, that ore is in the form of two blades, the longer named Twilight, the shorter Dawn, since that was the time of day each one was quenched, and ‘breathed life’ for the first time.  The swords are now in silk bags, held to the rucksack with tight straps as Joseph hikes alone.  The letter that came with the blades explained, that they were ‘alive’ and needed to breath fresh air from time to time.  Well, during his younger days, Joseph took martial arts, Kendo being one of them, so, swords are not exactly foreign to him.  He did study upon one particular type of style of swordsmanship from Japan, Nito Ryu style, develop by the legendary Miyamoto Musashi, reputed to be the greatest swordsman in Japanese history.  Out here, alone, Joseph will put Twilight and Dawn through their paces, in the morning.  Now, he is going to find a place to shelter from the storm that he sees coming from the distant horizon.  Finding a rock outcropping, he backs into it, puts on a rain poncho, cover himself and his blades completely.  He thinks, “Looks like I’m going to have to hunker down here for a little while.”

A what if I find hysterical as a concept (it’s probably not meant to be funny, but it acts as dark comedy for me) is one where the nuclear bombs dropped on Japan were freaking Gamma bombs. So everyone in Hiroshima and Nagasaki became Hulks, and Japan steamrolled the world with an army of Hulks.

I just find it darkly funny that in that what if the US bombing a civilian population backfired so dramatically. I have never read the what if mind you, the execution might be trash, and the description of the plot on the wiki does not excite me. Thank you @oxymitch for linking it to me. But the concept itself still amuses me.

On the more “everything freaking goes wrong,” shoutout to Earth-13410 for everything perpetually getting comically worse.

First, Charles Xavier is a British fascist in wwii and allies with the axis and the soviets. Namor is also the protector of imperial Japan so the Invaders are down a member. Their alliance conquers the world, Cap is killed, then Xavier turns on the rest of his allies and defeats them. Then freaking Atlantis comes out of nowhere with a steel chair and floods the entire freaking planet to conqueror it. Next Xavier and his surviving followers and their slaves use their giant submarine to bomb Atlantis and wipe out all Atlanteans outside of Namor. Namor hunts the sub but it looks like an island from the sky so he can’t find it while flying. Eventually a bunch of reality-jumping x-men show up and helped Namor kill Xavier, but Namor is just depressed because Japan and Atlantis are destroyed. Then the reality-jumpers bailed so I guess the reality is still empty of people outside of white supremacist fascists, an Imperial Japanese superhero, and the formers’ slaves? The wiki at least does not say what happens there after Namor decapitates Xavier.

And like I am not expert on marine biology, but flooding the whole planet will get rid of pretty much all shallows, so plants that anchor to the ocean floor will be unable to reach sunlight, it will diluting the composition of the seawater, many fish and other aquatic life are adapted for specific conditions so everything but stuff like guppies might die, it’s a bad plan Atlantis. Although there are other Atlantean settlements, so maybe Atlantis had prepared for the following unprecedented mass extinction, or had plans to remove the access water, but they got bombed and the smaller kingdoms could not survive in the new super ocean.

Look it’s ridiculous how much goes wrong in Earth-13410. I’m surprised Galactus didn’t randomly show up to eat the planet, like in that old Exiles arc on the world where Skrulls have mutants fight in gladiatorial combat.

@thefingerfuckingfemalefury Personally if I had to write a what if with fascists winning WWII*, that AU would take place decades later after the Axis had completely collapsed because of their stupidity, infighting, and fear of getting punished by the higher-ups so they pass the buck/don’t report issues.

*Which I would have to be forced to do because I hate the concept. Alternate history projects hinging on the Axis winning wwii are so cliche, bleak and often just excuses to jerk it to Nazis. What’s next, alternate history where Rome never fell? One where the soviets won the Cold War? Another where the confederacy won the American civil war? Wow, so original, I am sooooo impressed by the creativity. Those have certainly never been done to death, wow.
