MINE : digital stories connect

MINE was no digital wasteland of emotional emptiness with only the occasional wobble headed nod to real world relational dealings. It didn’t just act out stuff in beautifully imagined Minecraftscapes. This ‘kind of theatre’ experience showed the true power of the game as a digital emotional vehicle for storytelling.

In this magical world it was OK to fall and possible to ascend. In Minecraft Grand Canyon you can walk on the very edge, gleefully.

For me it hit a spot or two about motherness.

Maiku/Momko was tussling between drawing her son out of his immersive Minecraft world and yet recognised the value of letting him be there (only the gamers will survive armageddon??), even joining him sometimes in his adventure world journey. Mothers have an instinct to protect and maybe, as long as not on an open server just yet, this fluffy blocky world of the imagination is the cotton wool that will protect from the harshness of life. But boys (and girls) have to grow up.

I am mother of 3 daughters, and soaking myself in MINE and its message took me back to how the sweetest childhood innocence was smashed for Ruby (daughter number 1). Not in the game world but i.r.l. One of our cats murdered a baby rabbit. How could it be that this cute thing that she loved could be so cruel? We had to have a bunny funeral and she wrote some heartfelt serious words. After that the world gradually opened up to her and jarringly shifted from teachers that were only nice, colouring in and beautiful patterns, dressing up, playing and living day after day in a world of games and songs and made up stuff and exploration to the creeping knowledge that the world out there is much more mean. People hurt each other, disasters happen, politicians point and grunt and shout and don’t always do what’s best for you. People struggle and mummy is sometimes sad.

If there was a choice between a place where you were master (or mistress) of your destiny and had the power to decide the next move, where you could play and create freely (even if you didn’t actually possess all the coolest blocks), where if you got bored you could blow shit up (without being kicked out of school) and where, if things didn't go how you wanted them to go, you could die and re-spawn again and again and again and real life, which quite often sucks, which would you choose?

The mamma in MINE is pitching hard for real life and yet feeling her ambivalence. Grow up and come out of Minespace - for what? The last 12 years? The end of innocence, alcopops, parties, real life disappointments, girlfriends, boyfriends, heartaches. All the things that even the most mighty mamma can’t really protect against.

So for now telling stories together is nice. Gentle parables about the world work to ease the entry and forewarn us about the hard stuff but..... spawning for real inevitably occurs. This time when you fall its not into an endless Minecraft pool of made up underwater creatures where no pain enters in. This time when you scrape your knee it’s full of grit and gravel and it hurts like hell. Dress the wound and go again - for more real world, same world, new adventure. Risk. Fail. Learn. Grow. If you’re lucky mamma is there beside you with the Elastoplast and the praise, to hold your hand and guide you through. Maybe it is worth the shift from the virtual to the real? If you don’t have the option to re-spawn you have to stick with the tricky bits or indeed the good bits - real world challenge / cliff edge jeopardy / high score - and then you can really connect. Tenderness and warmth prevail. You can stand together, meet, wrangle, negotiate, reflect, mourn, celebrate and feel.

Das Übergangshaus, mein Haus im Rohbau auf dem Minespace Server von Admin Samslo, es wäre nichts o geblieben. Hätte auch ein Dach gebaut, es ausgebaut ich brauchte nur mal eine Bleibe. Die Freebuildwelt wurde ja kaputt gemacht und gelöscht, Samslo sagte zwar er werde die alte Freeebild Welt aufspielen, aber kam ja nicht wieder und gab sonst keine Erklärung von sich. Dieses besagte Übergangshaus wurde von einem Griefer zerstört und ich starb wieder und wieder bei erneuter Wiederbelebung. TeRrorich hieß er, stand im Chat, aber kein Fund und kein Hinweis auf dessen Existenz.
