This newly opened hotel in China is embedded in the rock of a former quarry. I want to go there. I want to stay there as a guest to experience the depth of connection with the stone. A quarry already represents a human-made condition. I would like to know the history of this place. What type of stone was mined here? What is the mineral content of the place? There is an odd sense that the rock aka natural resource has been removed from this site and human presence is then added thereby achieving some kind of balance. As if the lack of stone required something in its place and human architectural and culture life were required as a kind of - balm - to the human-made wound in the earth.

Two primary architectural gestures are evident here: a concavity and a convexity.

I wonder if one can row around the quarry lake - or perhaps swim.

There is an underground grotto-like swimming pool under dim and dank lighting - which I find almost shocking, that is, its degree of uninivtingness.

I would love to stay here in winter when the lake freezes. I imagine it freezes. I don’t know if it snows everywhere in China - which - after all - is a rather large country. It is rather staggering - my interest in the mineral world - and the depth of my lack of geographical knowledge.

But this is the way it goes. This surfeit of data that comes to us almost ensures ignorance. A depth of knowledge is not supported. Rigorous discipline is required. Perhaps it always was.

But vis-a-vis knowledge, I have this sense that a condition of mastery is inherent in former modes of human existence that precluded interventions of media and technology. Time is/was different. Where does/did the mind go? What information is/was salient? Information continues/continued to come in, to be absorbed. The information is/was simply/not-simply different.

Such digressions are only part of the reason I did not feel I could become an academic. A quarry’s worth of questions that are excavated and exported elsewhere - away from in situ salience.
