Why would Karamel fans “move on” from Karamel?

I am puzzled by this concept that Karamel shouldn’t be rooting for Karamel anymore. It just boggles my mind in so many ways for so many reasons, I felt like jotting down some of them;

1.) Shipping does not work that way. Look I could elaborate, but I think most people who have ever encountered shipping understand this aspect.

2.) Kara has NOT expressed comparable romantic emotions towards anybody since Mon-El.

Look, I know there are fans who wish she would express that kind of romantic interest in other people, but looking at the show, it’s just a fact that it hasn’t happened. And since there is only one more season left, I don’t think bringing in somebody new would work, nor do I personally believe in any other relationships that have just been rather tepid.

This is not a case of: Kara has found happiness with somebody new, you should be happy for her, because that flat out hasn’t happened. She just hasn’t gone to the same level of relationship and romantic interest with anybody else (wake me up when Kara kisses a person, has sex with them, moves in with them).

Not all Karamel fans feel that way, but I consider myself one of the fans who is open to the concept in theory, because I do love Kara. But it just hasn’t happened. There just is not relationship that makes me consider “okay, you should really respect that Kara happens to romantically love this person now more than she did Mon-El”.

(as for Mon-El, yes he found somebody but to me season 3 made it clear that he was not happy with her and he ended things with her, they could have used Winn’s visit to tell us that Mon-El changed his mind on that or found somebody new altogether, but again, this is not what happened. As it stand the last what we knew of Mon-El was still that he was deeply unhappy to go back to the future and only did it out of duty)

3.) Kara wants romantic love. I get the concept of Kara not needing a romantic relationship to live and the sister relationship between Kara and Alex being the most important one. The thing about Kara is... she has always wanted love. In Supergirl’s pilot episode, we see her proactively looking for love by going on a blind date.

In one of her timelinewise earliest moments where she could feasibly have urges she voices her desire to express herself romantically:

Kara found love with Mon-El and lost it. And then she didn’t have any meaningful romantic progress for two years. She didn’t whine about it. She didn’t neglect her duties to search love. She was just basically still the same kick ass hero who helps others and supports her friends.

So maybe one could argue, okay, maybe the drama with Mon-El turned Kara into a person who has no interest in romantic love anymore. Except ... to me (other than how that being a really sad story) again that didn’t happen. When William unexpectantly asks her out, she has a big smile and she does want to go on a date with him. And when I look at the scene where she expresses her frustration on how she can’t progress things with William

I don’t look at that scene and think that this is a woman who needs to learn she doesn’t need romantic relationships. I look at this scene and see a woman who wants love and it’s really unfair that she sholdn’t get to have one, that circumstances shouldn’t allow it for her.

Especially: if Alex is allowed to have romantic relationships on the side without it threatening the Sisters Uber Alles status, why can’t Kara? Why would Kara’s romantic relationship be a threat to a sister ending when Alex’ relationship isn’t?

To me it’s just really clear from Kara’s history on the show and the opinions she has expressed that Kara wants romantic love and to me it feels sad and unjust that she shouldn’t get to have one, especially with how long it has been since she had a relationship, especially when fellow heroes Nia and Brainy can have one and her sister can also have one.

The arc of Kara’s romantic relationships has never been that she’s too thirsty and needs to learn to keep in her pants, not has it been that she doesn’t want it. It has overwhelmingly been that she wants it but things got in the way, things like duty, getting murdered by your high school teacher or alien invasions and time traveling inducing wormholes.

Even if the message were that maybe Kara doesn’t like relationships enough, I still feel like the logical way to sensibly close up this arc would still be for Kara to get to experience a relationship without things getting in the way, so she can properly decide that maybe that isn’t what she wants. (I for one would argue: Kara has already kind of experienced that with James and it most certainly did not cure her from wanting a romantic relationship since she started a relationship with Mon-El soon after)

4.) Kara and Mon-El’s season 3 ending sucked and provided no closure. I know there are people who did not like the relationship and hence probably didn’t pay much attention to Mon-El’s exit episode. But as a Karamel fan, of course the details matter to me. And the details sucked. And they didn’t just suck because “damn, I didn’t get my preferred couple together romantically”, but also because the details were intensely frustrating, From Kara’s point of view it is frustrating that she never got to hear the whole story (and all the bits I mentioned in my previous points in regards to Kara and her romantic arc in general). And from Mon-El’s point of view because Mon-El was very clearly unhappy when he left.

In the end, there are generally two reasons why people “move on”, either because they have gotten closure (something that wasn’t the case with Kara and Mon-El) or because something better came along (whether within the show or in a different show or fandom, and for many people that just isn’t the case, either because good ships are rare or because people still care about Kara and nothing better has come along for Kara)

If the writers didn’t want to continue Karamel as a romantic storyline, there is ways they could have gone about it. Very easily. Instead they left the characters on these deeply unsatisfying note. There is a lot of options they could have gone for which I would still have disliked as a fan of the Kara&Mon-El romantic relationship, but I would have grudgingly accepted.

They could have put Kara into a new relationship very quickly and have her drop lines that downplay her relationship with Mon-El and have Mon-El be happy for her. (basically what they did with James)

They could have had him return the necklace to symbolically put an end to Karamel’s romantic relationship, for Kara to give it to Alex or her next love interest. Or Mon-El could have given it to Alura, who was right there, since it was her necklace originally. Instead, after a season that put intentional emphasis on the necklace, Mon-El leaves still having it.

They could have had Mon-El and Imra reunite melodramatically in the finale and have him declare his feelings for Kara were just an illusion, Imra is who is supposed to be with. It could even have worked as a nice parallel to Kara saying she nearly lost herself when she tried to pursue violence against Reign. Except that just isn’t what happened, this isn’t what they wrote for Mon-El. What they did write is Mon-El smiling at the thought of spending more time with Kara (even giving Brainy a line that draws emphasis to the fact that Mon-El is smiling) and being saddened when Brainy tells him he can’t, he has to go back.

So, let’s say, maybe end of season 3 was too quick for the writers to come up with something good. Well in that case they had another opportunity to put a final lid on the relationship when Winn came back for a guest episode. They could have had Winn return the necklace and tell Kara that Mon-El died. Kara would have been a bit sad and as a viewer I would have gotten the message, okay, he is not coming back, any appearance is at most going to be an AU.

They could have used Winn to tell us Mon-El returned back to Imra and they have seven children now. Again as a viewer I would have gotten the message, okay, so the writers tell me Mon-El and Imra are supposed to be together in every universe, Mon-El can’t be a good character if he leaves seven kids behind.

Instead they did nothing. They left Karamel in complete undefined limbo (with nothing coming in to replace it or otherwise directly contradict it) with the last note they ended on being Mon-El going back to the future because Brainy tells him that he HAS to, not because this is what Mon-El would have chosen, because Mon-El needs to be a big damn hero, not because that is what makes Mon-El happy.

5.) This is the last season, if there is a time to hope for a happy ending, people do understand that it is now, right? Especially since the show has shown in the 100th episode that they are willing to bring Mon-El back for special occasions. So there is a precedent. They brought him back once for a very special episode, so why would it be unreasonable for me to hope that they would do it again, even if it were only for an Easter Egg?

Especially since I really enjoyed his guest appearance and how they wrote him. Even if they didn’t want to return to romantic Karamel, I would still want him to return and see them again, kicking butt together, giving each other advice. That would still make me happy and I would be rooting for that regardless of what Kara’s romantic choices are, because I like their characters and I think they have great chemistry together and I want to see them do scenes together.

So no, I am not getting my hopes up for anything beyond an episode 100 style guest appearnce. But I don’t feel guilty for hoping this or for saying if they were wiling to give more, I’d be very happy. Because Kara is still there, still wants love and nobody has taken Mon-El’s place. Because their relationship was left on a tragic note. And because the last time they brought him back, it felt like it was on good terms, I really enjoyed it and it was respectful towards Karamel’s history, even if it wasn’t overtly in your face romantic (but open enough so fans could see something if they wanted to [because of the angry face Kara makes when Myxy talks badly of Mon-El, because of the face she makes when he gets killed, because of the face she makes when he walks past and her eyes follow him].

If all that happaned was Mon-El having a short cameo rather than a proper getting together arc, yeah, I would be kind of sad. But I just recently wrote a lengthy post about the many things Karamel did get already (because Karamel did get the kisses and the lseeping together and the living together and the declaring their love to each other and the true love’s kiss), and even though O do strongly think that there is still a story there, I could live with it being just a cameo. To me it would still be a nice note to leave the characters on considering their history as we have seen it so far.

Of course people who just never saw the chemistry or the potential are free to hope for something else, but since I’m a shipper, I did see the chemistry and the potential, so yeah, why would I stop now?

Finn scrambled for cover as a heaving breath filled his chest. His throat burned from the heavy inhalation of debris clouds thick with dust and torn-up concrete. The walls barricading him shook with impact from each incoming blaster shot and he closed his eyes to calm his breaths and recenter his thoughts for a quick glance around the corner. Time spent thinking about any other action than shooting was rarely provided as a soldier of the First Order, so despite the chaos found midst battle, Finn took whatever moments he could to think through a plan rather than jump head first as he had been trained and conditioned to do for the genocidal regime. He quickly learned strategy was his forte and made sure to exercise his abilities where he could. Before joining the Resistance—in Finn’s mind, his life was split between a time before the Resistance and a time after joining—Finn rarely thought about any possible chance to consider his next step in battle as more than “point-and-shoot.” The repetitive process lasted him until that fateful day on Jakku where “point-and-shoot” turned into murdering innocent civilians, a task Finn could not stomach no matter all his training with the First Order.

Blinking dust from his lashes, Finn hoisted his blaster and turned the corner to inspect the situation at hand. Poe Dameron was down the hall with perfect shooting posture, shoulders hunched just enough as he pointed his weapon left and shot his way down the corridor. Finn quickly followed as backup, his brain a year trained into following his friend’s lead on various recruitment missions gone awry. While Finn was the diplomatic leader for most missions—his story as a defected Stormtrooper built him as a prime Resistance figurehead when convincing a planet to offer fighters and pilots for the Resistance’s cause—Poe trailblazed their defensive line when a negotiation turned south. It often helped if Finn didn’t outright begin shooting; one too many times in the early weeks of their expedition, Finn accidentally made the situation worse being an ex-Stormtrooper using his gun.

In recent times, Finn the defected ‘trooper was as known as Poe Dameron, best pilot for the Resistance. Shoot outs became rare so the one he and Poe currently engaged in came with quite the surprise. Especially when Stormtroopers suddenly appeared and decided a good ambush against the top Resistance recruiters would make Supreme Leader Kylo Ren’s day.

If the opportunity for a battle against Kylo Ren appeared once more, Finn would definitely mention these petulant little wayside battles and how annoying fighting his way back to a ship Poe would spend half the time flying with complaints on his tongue always turned out.

Finn shook his head to wipe a slowly growing smile off his lips as he stood shoulder to shoulder with the aforementioned complainer. No one could catch Finn saying he was truly particularly annoyed; not when the thrill of the chase brought life to his body in a way anything else rarely could, and most certainly not with Poe for a partner. Finn could get them to their ship with minimal to zero injuries and Poe could get them off the ground and in hyperspace before their enemies recovered from blaster gun stuns. The synergy between Finn and Poe convinced General Leia to let them continue their mission as a duo, or at least with little interference, so Finn could take on a few skirmishes, Kylo Ren directed or not.

“You with me, buddy?”

Finn blinked and looked over at Poe, who had a smirk on his lips that stood out against the dust smeared over his face. Finn smiled back and nodded. “Yeah. You ready to go?”

“Always, my friend.” Poe nodded his head eastward. “We have our exit here but you can probably guess we’ll have guns pointed at our heads the moment we get outside.”

Finn sighed. “We’re only a few hundred yards out from the ship though, so if we can just dodge as many as possible, we’ll make it fine.”

“I’ll cover you.”

Something in Poe’s voice struck the wrong chord in Finn. He lowered his gun just enough to signal giving Poe his full attention and frowned. “What aren’t you telling me?”

Poe scrunched his nose in distaste. “I’m not hiding anything from you, Finn; you trust me.”

“I do,” whispered Finn in a voice far too gentle for the conversation. He felt his heart leap at the confession but ignored it as he didn’t have the time to question the reaction. He belatedly noted how often he’d been ignoring that reaction for a few months now. “That’s not what I asked though.”

“I promise I’m not not telling you anything, I just...,” the brunette gave Finn an indecipherable look and then turned back in the direction of their exit. “I have a hunch. Gut feeling, you know? As much as I think we’ll have a party waiting for us on the other side, I think we also won’t. Or rather, our guests will be fashionably late and by fashionably late, I mean they’ll board our ship.”

“Aren’t we the guests to their party?”

Poe laughed and the mood between them lightened up in an instance. “You’re right but semantics are annoying.”

“This is why I’m the diplomat between us.”

“Pretty sure Leia wanted me to do all the talking when we first started this.”

Finn rolled his eyes. “You do know there’s a difference between talking to negotiate trade deals and talking to negotiate a ‘good time’.”

“They are one in the same depending on who I’m talking to, buddy.” Poe winked and Finn scoffed despite feeling blood rushing to his cheeks. Thanking the Force for his dark skin to hide his impromptu reaction to something as common as a Dameron wink, Finn turned back to their escape route with an uninterested cough.

“I’m going to head out first and you follow my lead exactly in case our guests do arrive ‘fashionably late’. Shoot ‘troopers and try to avoid the natives as we’ve been doing. I don’t want them to complain about Resistance Fighters pulling weapons on them.”

“Sounds like a plan, Finn.” Poe’s eyes softened from their humorous twinkle, and he smiled warmly with his next words. “You lead and I’ll always follow.”

It was a simple reply Finn had heard many times and yet it still made his chest constrict hearing the utter dedication and loyalty Poe had for him. It boggled his mind how easily everyone in the Resistance trusted him despite how dodgy he admittedly acted when came to the Resistance as a whole, his mind solely focused on Rey and her safety in combination with his moral right to exist in the Resistance despite it. As General Leia told him later and as he slowly learned in his camaraderie with Poe, dedication to keeping loved ones safe is an honest trait. Finn was unable to keep Slip alive, so he tried his best to keep Rey—and now Poe—safe and well.

Knowing people trusted him with their lives still overwhelmed Finn, especially coming from Poe, a man far more capable at keeping himself afloat than Finn. First time they met, Finn almost got Poe killed by missing that one last TIE fighter that shot them to Jakku. Poe flew for the New Republic and the Resistance far longer than Finn had been part of his life, yet Poe always turned to Finn for safety and protection, for a trust and bond only strengthened by time and experience. Finn didn’t know the labels appropriate for what they shared and assumed there probably existed no word to explain their unique friendship that extended beyond the simple definition found in cordial attachment. Now as Poe’s trust-filled words echoed in his brain, Finn wondered if the other man would follow him into more than a battle.

The curious thought dissipated when a blaster sounded from back where they came. He shared a split second of eye contact with Poe before they both ran toward their exit and barged through the doors. Heavy wind and rainfall battered Finn through his thin clothing and he gritted his teeth together before sloshing through the mud toward their ship. Through the loud pattering rain and howling wind, Finn heard Poe’s blaster going off and he turned back to spot his friend shooting down a being in white armor. Turning back toward the ship, Finn caught sight of three Stormtroopers and shot each one in the chest with a stun blast.

The next few seconds happened with a quickness fast enough to dizzy Finn. All he heard was a shout, giving him enough time to skid into a turn and miss the blast aimed for his neck. One of the locals must’ve pulled the trigger given the good aim, he thought before being tackled to the ground and rolling in mud with a heavy body.

“Stay down!” Poe yelled into his ear before sitting up and cocking his blaster for a multitude of angry shots. Belatedly, Finn wondered if Poe was shooting the natives in retribution, but his eyes were locked on Poe straddling him by the waist in the dirt. The worst time to begin realizing Poe’s attractiveness—no, not realizing it, more so accepting his handsomeness as something Finn found attractive enough to consider pursuing—could not be any other moment than here, but he let Poe pin him down until he deemed it safe to get up and let his thoughts wander to the way the rain dripped down the slope of Poe’s nose and how the top two buttons of his shirt had popped open and—

“They wanted you so I had to keep you low,” interrupted Poe from Finn’s trailing thoughts. “Sorry I got you all dirty and muddy. I think I have some extra clothes in the cargo bag near the passenger seat. You’re welcome to dress in that, yeah?”

“Yeah. Sure. Okay.” Finn blinked a couple times and took the offered hand Poe held out after climbing off him. He noted how their fingers unconsciously slotted together as Poe tugged him toward the ship, and his heart once again decided to react in a way he was beginning to wonder had been a reaction all this time that he simply never gave much thought until today.

The two returned to their ship with only a few more shots at wayward Stormtroopers, Poe dragging Finn along as the rain battered his skin and washed some of the dirt from his body. Once inside, Poe’s prediction came into reality and they fought hand-to-hand against a trio, Finn barely noticing Poe until they managed to kick the intruders off the ship and back onto the muddied ground. He gave his friend a glance and noticed how he gripped his left arm but thought little of it when Poe shot him a blinding smile and motioned for him to ready himself for flight.

Finn grabbed a bag Poe passed along and fished out a long sleeved shirt and dark cargo pants, chucking his soggy, muddy clothes to the side as he dressed in Poe’s extra clothing. He turned back to Poe, who sat himself in the pilot’s seat flipping switches and pressing buttons with an unmatched quickness. This ship was one of the better ones they used to make their way through the galaxy as undetected as possible but nothing compared to an X-wing for Poe anyway. Without BB-8, starting the ship took a bit more time but Poe had them in the air and on their way back to the Resistance base on Naboo fast enough. The familiar sight of suns sparkling as stars soon filled the viewscreen so Finn allowed himself to relax and give Poe a friendly pat on the shoulder. When Poe flinched and tried to brush it off with a flimsy excuse, relaxation left Finn’s plans for the ride.

“Did you get shot?” he asked sternly, recalling how Poe gripped his arm just a few minutes earlier.

“It’s just a graze.”

“Graze or not doesn’t change the definition of getting shot, Poe.” Finn sighed and walked further into the ship. “Come here; let me patch you up.”

“I should stay in the cockpit being pilot and all.”

“You can get back to your seat once you let me tend to your injury, Dameron.” Finn didn’t often address Poe by his family name given how it felt like disconnecting himself from the personal relation found in calling him by his given name, and though Poe was not the only living Dameron as long as Kes had yet to kick the bucket, the reminder of his family often brought Poe back to reality and remembering he had to think about his own survival midst the chaos.

“Should have encouraged you to stay working in medical,” he mumbled but turned on auto-pilot and worked his way to Finn’s side with a sigh.

“Yeah, but you’d miss having me during the long flights,” Finn retorted and smiled lightly when Poe grinned widely. He took the man’s arm in hand and frowned at the large patch of bright red staining the cream colored fabric. “Just a graze?”

“You know the small ones always look worse than they really are.”

Finn narrowed his eyes but stood and reached up for the medical kit, cursing once he discovered the locals who had infested their ship had stolen it. “Looks like you’ll have to do with a tourniquet until we get to base.” He brushed his fingers against the wound and apologized when Poe hissed. His fingers came away painted with red. “This is more than a graze, Poe. You shouldn’t be bleeding this much if it was.”

“Okay, maybe it was more than a graze, but I feel mostly fine. It’s not a big deal.”

One thing that angered Finn most of all was his friends downplaying their injuries. He took a lightsaber to the back after fighting Kylo Ren—the scar still sizzled on bad days—and spent not nearly enough time in physical therapy for the damage done to his body. Finn knew there would be consequences for the rest of his life because he didn’t take the time necessary to fully heal. He knew that the First Order would have terminated him despite his ranking if his injury wasn’t dealt with properly. He never wanted his friends to be hindered by improper or incomplete healing processes and that could only be ensured if they admitted the level of injury in the first place. Poe was usually good about reporting his injuries since getting hurt badly enough meant he couldn’t fly, so hiding the extent of this wound really only meant one thing: he was embarrassed about why he got hit.

Finn tried to think about when Poe would have gotten shot but he knew the other man hadn’t gotten hit when they were escaping from the rendezvous point where they got attacked. He narrowed his eyes carefully. “Did you get hit while you were pinning me down?”

“I wasn’t pinning you down, I was protecting you.” Poe corrected as if the difference really mattered. Finn stood up and grabbed his discarded shirt, looking for a clean enough piece to use as a bandage. “Like I said,” the pilot continued, “they wanted to kill you in particular.”

“That doesn’t mean make yourself a target for them to shoot.” The sound of ripping fabric took to the air in the silence after Finn’s words. He walked back to Poe and roughly took his arm. “Don’t take silly shots for me, Poe. I can defend myself.”

“Never thought you couldn’t, Finn,” and Finn looked up into familiar eyes that hooked him since day one, momentarily distracted from the task at hand. “Let me help keep you safe like you do to me.”

A moment passed. Finn didn’t know what to make of it but he broke it when turning his eyes back to wrapping Poe’s wound. “You can’t keep me safe if you’re out on the field taking shots like this. All I’m asking is for you not to do that.”

“Sure.”

Poe’s nonchalant tone angered Finn and he tightened his wrapping just a bit more and cherished Poe’s wince before feeling guilty about it and redoing his bandaging job. “I’m just concerned, Poe. You always jump into danger like you don’t know any better and one of these days you’re gonna get yourself killed.”

“We’re fighting in a war, Finn. I can’t not jump into the fight when I know every shot I make can be one more shot closer to the end.” Poe’s eyes followed Finn’s fingers as he carefully wrapped the bandage and the pads of his fingers continued to stain red with Poe’s blood. “Besides, you jumped in front of a stupid shot that almost cost you your leg.”

A loud groan pulled itself from Finn’s throat as he finished tying the fabric. “By the Force, Poe, that was three and a half months ago! I’ve paid the price for that move, why can’t you let it go?”

“Why have you let it go already? I know you didn’t have to see it like I did but,” Poe trailed off and then pulled his injured arm in against his chest. “It’s not the same. I didn’t look like I was gonna die when I got hit today so there’s no need for all this fuss.”

Finn’s breath caught in his throat and he pulled up off the bench. “If you want to talk about almost dying, how about we go back to our first mission when you practically bled out in my arms!”

“I did not! I told you the smaller ones always look worse than they are.”

“Yeah, but when the smaller wounds happen to nick a major artery, it’s kind of lot worse than it looks.” Finn snatched his wet shirt off the bench and wiped the blood off his hands onto it. “Can’t believe you’re really going to sit here arguing with me about who had the worst wounds.”

“I mean you’re gonna win no matter what given the scar on your back.”

A tense silence spread between them. Finn felt his jaw lock. “It’s been over a year, Poe. I survived.”

“And what if you didn’t? What if Ren killed you? Then what?”

“Then nothing because he didn’t and I’ve had a year to contend with that so why can’t you!”

“I nearly lost you after that battle before I even got to know you!”

“You wouldn’t have lost anything anyway ‘cause you didn’t know me! I was nothing to you back then!”

Poe’s face fell like he had been struck in the chest with a lightsaber. “Nothing?”

“No, not nothing,” Finn felt his heart constrict; he hated arguing with Poe. “I said it wrong. It’s just...you didn’t know me, why would you miss me? I thought I had gotten you killed just so I could escape.”

“Funny since I thought I had gotten you killed.” Poe crossed his arms and winced from the effort.

Finn stiffened his posture, somewhat surprised it had taken them this long to discuss the impact their first meeting had on each other. It wasn’t as if they never talked about it before but neither party mentioned their quick attachment that lead to a reunited hug on D’Qar meant for a long term couple separated for weeks when in reality, they only knew each other for a handful of minutes.

“Well, neither of us was killed in the crash and I didn’t get sliced in half by Kylo Ren, and we both survived the First Order’s attack on Crait, so let’s not almost die on recruitment missions.”

Poe scoffed. “You say this like I plan to get shot on every mission.”

“At this rate it wouldn’t surprise me!”

“I’ve only been injured a handful of times; this isn’t even the worst! I don’t know why you’re so riled up about this, Finn.”

“Maybe since you tried to hide it from me when you know how much I kriffin’ hate when you do.” Finn glared at Poe as he stood. “Maybe since I don’t ever like when you’re injured and this is one time I’m making it known how much I hate it.”

“Over something not life-threatening.” Poe laughed sardonically.

“Force, I’m not going to argue with you over this.” Finn motioned toward the cockpit. “Go off and be a pilot; you’re welcome by the way.”

“Thank you.”

And maybe this wound was really the last straw on the bantha’s back, but Finn turned on his heel with an angry growl and pointed a threatening finger at his friend.��“I don’t know what is with you right now and I’m sorry if I said something that ticked you off, but I’d rather not get back to base in a tiff with you, so can it if you would be so kind.”

Poe raised his eyebrows and motioned to himself. “Me? I’m not the one losing my cool over an easily healable blaster wound. I am perfectly fine.”

“Says the guy who brings up a long since healed wound from over a year ago.”

“Yeah because you’re acting like I could have died from that skirmish today!”

“Anytime you’re out in the open you could die! Even when you’re in a ship, you could die!” Finn felt his throat tighten with unhinged emotion at the thought of Poe dying and he fought through it. “You have a target on your back at all times, Poe, of course I’m worried!”

“So do you and someone actually hit that target and almost took you out so sorry if I’m a little annoyed at you acting like somehow me taking a hit on the arm to make sure you don’t meet that same fate again is crossing some sort of line.”

Finn’s hands curled into fists. “It’s crossing a line. We don’t trade kill shots for each other, Poe.”

“Well, good thing that wasn’t a kill shot aimed at me today.” Poe rolled his eyes and the lackadaisical action made Finn angrier. “You know, unlike the one for your throat that you had to dodge.”

Force be with him, they were really going to argue this out on the flight back to Naboo. “Why do you even care?”

“You can’t seriously be asking me this.”

“I am. I’m seriously asking you this.” Finn stepped forward, ignoring the stinging burn in his eyes and the heavy weight on his chest because Poe’s answer could truly make or break him. “Why do you care?”

Poe’s eyes darted to the side and he pulled his lips into a thin straight line. His hair fell in damp curls over his eyes and Finn wanted to brush them away if just to get Poe’s eyes back on him. “You’re my friend and it’s my duty to make sure you’re still alive.”

“Oh, it’s duty.” Finn felt something in his chest shatter at the news. “You’re here out of duty. I know Leia initially told you to accompany me but I thought after a year you would be here because you wanted it.”

“No, not duty to the Resistance,” spat Poe as he turned back to face Finn. His eyes darkened with emotion that had Finn gulping from the intensity. “Duty to myself. I can’t live with you being dead and it being my fault. Haven’t been able to live with that concept since Jakku.”

“You didn’t even know me then, Poe, why did it even matter if I survived?”

Poe frowned. “Why did it matter to you that I survived? Why’d you take my jacket while stranded on a desert planet?”

Finn blinked a couple times and coughed. “I...I don’t know. I was thankful, I guess. Had to honor your efforts somehow.” He felt his cheeks heat up as Poe’s gaze kept its intensity. “But we’re past that so stop bringing it up.” Poe opened his mouth and Finn cut him off. “No, don’t. We’re friends now and that’s what matters when it comes to saving our skin today and the next day.”

“Right. So, from one friend to another, you’ll stop flipping out over easily manageable injuries?” Finn’s glare returned and Poe threw his hands up in the air, seemingly forgetting about his own injury. “Why!”

“Poe,” warned Finn as the other man’s voice began to escalate in volume.

“Answer me that, Finn! Why does the Forcedamned state of my arm matter so much to you?”

“Poe, it’s not—,”

“It’s not what? It’s not important? It’s not a big deal?”

“It’s not about your arm and it’s never been about your arm! This is about your recklessness that’s gonna get you killed one day!” Finn cried out in response. “It’s about you putting yourself in excess danger for no reason! Putting others in danger too because we care about you and don’t want you dead!”

Poe snapped. “I don’t care about whoever is part of your ambiguous we, I know the Resistance needs me, but why do you care so much?”

Frustration and anger coupled with long-ignored yearning and sudden understanding soaked through Finn and the words flew ut his mouth before the thought to stop himself fully formed. “It’s ‘cause I love you!”

Nothing but silence answered Finn back for at least three minutes. The loud ship engines filled the space between breaths as the two cooled down from their impromptu shouting match. Poe spoke up after sitting down with bewilderment written all over his face. “You...you love me?”

Finn wanted to take back the words but he knew he spoke the truth. It all added up after today; drew a picture he had been looking at upside down for so long. He couldn’t deny it even if Poe didn’t feel the same way. “Yeah, I do. I love you and that’s why I care about even a scratch on your arm. I can’t lose you, Poe, like you can’t live with me being dead. I won’t let that happen if I can help it.”

“You won’t ever lose me.”

“That’s a bold promise to make.” Finn sat down and let loose a heavy sigh. “Don’t make promises you can’t keep.”

“Then I’ll make the promise to love you, too. That’s one I’ve already kept for a while.” Poe sent Finn a grin and then turned back to the cockpit. “I, uh, should head back to the pit though. Auto-pilot makes me nervous.”

“Yeah. Okay.” Finn rubbed at the back of his neck. “Sorry for yelling at you.”

“No, I’m sorry. I was a bit out of line.” Poe jumped to his feet and stretched his working arm. “I didn’t mean to, uh, make you confess.”

“You didn’t make me. I wanted to, I guess.” he chuckled lightly and looked up at Poe. “If it helps you understand why I care then it’s something you should know.”

Poe smiled and Finn couldn’t help but smile back. The older man bent down to press warm lips to Finn’s dry forehead. “We’ll talk more at the base, yeah? After we report to Leia.”

“And after you go to medical and get proper care for that injury.”

Poe laughed brightly, his smile sparkling with the stars outside their ship. Finn wondered why it took so long for him to tell Poe how he felt, even if he only figured out what label to use just a few minutes ago. “Of course.”

I've been peeking in on twitter more often than usual over the last few days, partly because I spent the weekend working a con with Zerbe and didn't have time to spend scrolling tumblr, and partly in looking at the numerous Hot Bad Takes about Steve Yockey getting what appears to be a once in a lifetime sort of opportunity for a writer and leaving Supernatural before the series is finished, and partly because since the show is ending this year and there's so many campaigns to show our love to the cast and crew... but I haven't seen anyone start a campaign to show our love to the one group of people who've already been laboring away on s15 for more than a month already: THE BELOVED WRITERS WHO ARE CRAFTING OUR RUN TO THE FINISH LINE!

(presented with a focus on the writers who have a social media presence on twitter, who will actually see this...)

They've been hard at work since May preparing to bring us one final season of Team Free Will in their last stand against the Cosmic Drama that has been building up to this for the last 14 years. I'd really love to begin a concerted campaign to share our love for what they do, and not just in a generalized squee sort of way, but in the same way we offer thoughtful comments on fic. I feel bad because I spend all my time writing about the glory of the narrative structure of this show, the brilliance of Dabb's showrunning direction, the depth of Meredith Glynn's character study (especially of Dean, but honestly of all the characters, including Cas... remember 14.17? Cas has amply demonstrated just how much he understands the value of his human family, and is on the road to understanding what he might also mean to them).

The care with wich Bobo has crafted some of the most painful leaps in emotional growth for the characters (hello, 14.18... you can watch a a microcosm of Dean's entire emotional journey over the course of the show encapsulated in that single episode). Master of the Fanfiction Gap-- and in partnership with Meredith-- the providers of possibly the most efficient and broad emotional layering through glimpses of the past in the current narrative... I know I'm not explaining this well, but, I SEE WHAT THEY DID THERE, with everything from the mixtape-- and not even the shippy implications of it, but using that singular moment to show us the breadth and depth of all the characters' relationships by reminding us of all the things we never actually see on screen, yet which still happen in the characters' "real lives." And holy HECK 14.18 was a master class in that, with the layered flashbacks to explore each character’s relationship with Mary.

One of my most-referred back to episodes of s14 has been 14.08, Byzantium, which honestly the meta implications of the title alone spurred some of the most interesting discussions I've had on the cosmology of the show's universe, and laid some solid groundwork for what I presume will be the direction the show takes in s15. SOULS DETERMINE THEIR OWN FATE! Our choices DO matter! And we have Meredith Glynn to thank for that.

This is the sort of excellent writing that makes these characters so real to us, that keeps us invested in the characters and the show. They DO feel like real people, with full lives in three dimensions, and our televisions are the portal to their universe that we're only gifted a tiny portion of in 42 minute chunks. And yet... we do feel like we understand so much of their lives that we DON'T see on screen, precisely because of this incredibly layered and subtle character study.

Which brings me to the newest writer on staff, Jeremy Adams. He gave us the glory that is Scoobynatural, under some incredibly tight constraints (given the limitations of how they were allowed to present the Scoobyverse within the Supernatural universe's rules), and I'm incredibly excited to see his more standard take on Sam, Dean, and Cas in a full-on episode of Supernatural. And honestly, we need more along the lines of The Killer Stuffed Dinosaur In Love. I think, if anything, Jeremy has a solid hold on who these characters are-- both the surface layer and the far deeper emotional layers-- as well as a fresh take on the show’s inherent sense of humor.

(and I mean COME ON in Dabb era, the era of the author of 8.08, we know there’s an element of brilliant Cartoon Logic to the narrative)

And we can't forget Davy Perez, who effectively provided us a guidebook on How To Watch This Show: Meta Edition with 14.04 Mint Condition, and then used this guide to break us all completely with 14.11 Damaged Goods. But also setting up a mirror confrontation for how Mary parents her boys in how she deals with Dean here, which will become painfully, horrifically twisted around in how she presents the exact same choice to Jack in 14.17/14.18. I'm wibbling just thinking about it, and honestly that's what good writing DOES. It grabs you by the feelers and does not let go.

And ALL of this has happened under Dabb's orchestration. All these other writers are effectively telling us HIS story. I don't think they're all getting the credit they deserve. Yes, I write rhapsodic about their episodes on tumblr, but they never see it. I think, heading into this final season, we all owe these people the praise and thanks they deserve to hear, and not just the usual Twitter Terrible Hot Take machine they're typically exposed to.

To that end, I've done a bit of research and made a contact who has promised to hand deliver our gratitude directly to these writers who need to hear it most. The cast is steeped in our gratitude at every con, and there's been multiple campaigns in fandom to thank the tireless crew who works on set every day to bring this show to us. But as a writer, I understand how thankless their job can feel. And I have an idea of what would absolutely mean the most to them: Direct messages of "I see what you did there."

I got a message to that effect on my fic Cakepocalypse! a few weeks ago, and I'm gonna share it here (without attribution, since I haven't asked the commenter for permission to share it), but it is the PERFECT example of the sort of thing I want to give the SPN writers:

I can't even BEGIN to express how much this simple comment meant to me. I felt PERFECTLY SEEN. And I want to share that feeling with the writers who craft this show for us to enjoy, because all of them deserve to know that we care about the characters and their story and their eventual fate as much as they do.

So here's my proposal:

It doesn't have to be complex. You don't need to write them novels, but I think sharing the sort of specific love and appreciation for them that I've attempted to express above will go MILES toward energizing the writers as they move into the final season. Let's share with them how much this entire journey has meant to us. Let's let them know that WE SEE WHAT YOU'RE DOING THERE!

INTRODUCTION.

To start things off, I just want to say, I’ve been writing Shiro for a while. I made this blog less than a month from when the show first premiered, and before then, wrote him on Skype (ᴛʜʀᴏᴡʙᴀᴄᴋ) with some friends. I’ve spent a lot of time in this character’s head space. I was here for every development as the seasons pushed forward, and took pride in integrating every detail into the way I wrote him. Even when I had doubts in how the show portrayed him, they were justified —— for instance, Shiro not feeling like himself in seasons 3 through 5, to find out the clone theories were true. I’ve always felt the show did an insane amount of justice to this character. I’ve always felt the creators put their love and devotion and careful consideration into every step they took with him, therefore, I stayed as true to the canon as I could. He’s a character I connected with, a character I related to, and a character I wish I could be more like. Over the past two years, I’d been praised on how canon my Shiro felt. How the dialogue felt natural for him to say, how his actions and decisions genuinely felt like something the character in the show would choose. I like to believe I am familiar with the character.

I understand he wasn’t really meant to make a return. When they killed him off in season two, he was meant to stay out of the series. Even then, they found a way for his return to feel natural. I brought further development with his relationships between other characters, showed us bits and pieces of his past that we had never seen before, and even explored how his future would differ from his previous endeavors all while following the same path. Season six and seven were an emotional joyride for Shiro fans, and to this day hold some of my favorite content the series had to offer. When I attended NYCC and JDS told the audience his favorite Voltron moment was when Shiro activated the ATLAS because of everything it meant for him —— Shiro’s perseverance, his adaptability, his strength, his leadership being taken to the next level —— I couldn’t agree more. I believed they would continue to serve this character justice, and I couldn’t wait to see what else was in store.

That being said, these qualities I love in him felt a bit cheated with Season eight.

SEASON EIGHT.

The last season had plenty of moments I loved ; but instead of feeling like something the creators poured their hearts into, this season felt like a hollowed out husk of what their original vision may have been. I understand the creators never really had full control over their content, and Dreamworks had pulled their punches, and I believe the show’s finale gravely suffered for this. None of this hurt is directed toward the cast, the producers, the animators, or anyone else who worked so hard to bring the content to us. Without them, I would’ve never been able to even be this deeply invested in Shiro.

I never wanted to be a canon divergent blog. I never desired to stray away from how the character was meant to be perceived. Aside from some crossover and OC shenanigans, all of his behavior and canon stayed intact. I wanted to preserve everything I loved in him in the first place. But after being unsatisfied with the ending of Season eight, I’ve decided against following his conclusion solely for how out of character this felt for him. This doesn’t mean I don’t believe anyone’s opinion is invalid. If this was a perfect finale for you, I would never want to take it away or argue your happiness. But as I plan to continue writing Shiro, I need to differentiate what I intend to keep for his canon.

Shiro has traditionally been viewed as the STRONGEST character on the team. When digging deeper into his psyche ( and honestly, some really obvious moments on screen ) there are plenty of moments we see WEAKNESS. All of these moments felt justified in one way or another . He wasn’t a damsel in distress, but all the same, was never an invincible knight. With physical and mental restraints, I still saw the character shine. Season 8 seemed to throw that concept away in various moments. We never see Shiro’s physical ability ( aside from a filler episode’s arm wrestle ) , and are sometimes even betrayed. I don’t mind seeing Shiro get knocked down, but a major part of his character is getting back up again.

Whatever way you view Shiro and Keith’s bond, their relationship is a major point of the series. The entirety of season two up until the end of season six allowed us to see their bond as something beyond confined limits, something that quite literally transcended life and death. There are countless moments where these characters confide in one another, rescue one another, and fight for one another. To see all of this lead up to not a SINGLE conversation in season eight was a bit boggling. Even as brothers, as a ship, as close friends, however you see these two, Keith and Shiro’s relationship was the strongest between the Paladins. To see them so far apart when every season before they were beside one another felt like an utter betrayal, especially after the reveal of Shiro’s sexuality — as if Shiro couldn’t have any kind of close attachment with another male character in the show , especially after the ❛ I LOVE YOU ❜ being such a pivotal moment in the series, and honestly, in animation history. It is rare to see two male characters be able to confess any kind of love ( familial or romantic ) explicitly.

Shiro didn’t fight this season. Shiro barely spoke to Keith, or in that case, any of the other Paladins. He felt like he was degraded to how the fandom’s meme vision declared him the ‘ father ‘ of the group, and therefore, lost a ton of character in the process. I was ridiculously stoked to see him at the helm of the ATLAS, as I thought this would be the peak for a character I’ve devoted so much time to. Although I saw him take the helm in a few scenes, it was his characterization that was sacrificed. There is a big difference between a character’s arc being concluded and it being erased.

THE EPILOGUE.

I won’t be keeping Shiro’s written off ending —— this includes the relationship, and his departure from the Garrison crew. I don’t plan to retire Shiro or incorporate that relationship into his canon the way I did with Adam. I would rather not get too deep into this. If you liked the ending, that is entirely fine. Just don’t expect to see that content on this blog.

CANON DIVERGENCE.

Shiro and Keith’s bond strengthens after what happens at the cloning facility. He does directly bring up memories as they begin to flood back from Kuron’s time with the Paladins, including Keith’s confession. He would throw himself immediately into the line of fire to save Keith given the opportunity.

After the events with Haggar, Shiro stays at the helm of the ATLAS for as long as he can as their ADMIRAL , traversing the universe and patching warring nations. He fulfills his dream of exploring the universe all while devoting his time to helping others, while keeping enough time for his own mental health to repair gradually.

Depending on what ship I am writing, Shiro maintains his relationship aboard the ATLAS. With almost every pairing I write, his significant other is either already part of the ATLAS, Team Voltron, or finds a spot within the ship’s crew. Although he doesn’t make any drastic sacrifices to his own desires and dreams for the sake of a relationship, he learns from past mistakes and takes time to devote himself to be at their side.

The ATLAS maintains a close relationship with the Blade of Marmora, and assist their cause to provide resources and rebuild what had been lost to the Galra Empire. After ten thousand years of submission, there is a lot of work to be done.

Pretty much everything I am considering veering off the show’s canon takes place after the end of Season 8, and some points during. This all depends on how much whoever I am writing with kept from Season 8 as well, so if you have any questions, I will clarify.

Oh goodness gracious I love them so much. I would call them my purest ship but that’s not entirely true.

However, it’s entirely possible that I’m very biased because Steve McGarrett has to be one of my favorite fictional characters ever and he and Danny make SUCH A GOOD TEAM.

My main issue with this OTP is the sheer amount of queerbaiting in this show (which I talked about previously x x x x). I literally stopped watching for about 2-3 months in the middle of season 6 because I got so frustrated with where the dynamic between Steve and Danny was headed. Season 7 was a goddamn lifesaver though and pulled me out of the slump.

I have a lot of feelings about them and I have this personal headcanon that there’s this war between the writers and the producers. Essentially, one ships McDanno hard and the other is like “no how dare this is a family network” they say as they show horrifying murder scenes and therefore, whenever Steve/Danny get super gay, TA-DA look who’s back oh it’s those girlfriends that we forgot existed!

I think the biggest thing that I love about them is the trust that’s so inherent in their relationship. They argue like feral cats but the second that something fucked up happens, they have each other’s back. I think the end of season 7 really exemplifies that because as Steve was preparing to do this mind-boggling, incredibly dangerous, possibly fatal thing, Danny’s right next to him, bitching at him yeah, but also providing support and letting Steve know that he cares enough to be there for him.

Something that I think sheds some light on to their dynamic as well is how different and yet so similar they are in their approaches to love. Danny has a lot of intimacy issues (stemming from Rachel and subsequent girlfriends) and Steve has a hard time communicating his feelings with words. Steve’s love language is probably (imo) words of affirmation. He’s consistently telling Danny things like “you’re a great father” “we’re lucky to have you” “follow your dreams”. He was the first one to say I love you and he’s always the one who says it first in any situation. He gives out compliments and when he says he’ll do something, Steve will do it even if it kills him.

On the other hand, I think Danny’s love language is quality time. He voluntarily spends time doing things that he may complain about loudly, but he still does them. He may not hand out compliments like Steve does but he seeks out those he cares about and wants to spend time with them. He happily rides in a car with Steve constantly (despite his complaints) and he takes every opportunity to go out with the team, share experiences with them, even chaperone Grace’s dance! Danny will snark and insult and snipe at you all day about your life choices but when it comes down to it, he’ll bring a pack of beer over to your house and roll his eyes at your life choices while he drinks one with you.

Therein lies the disconnect between them. Steve hears Danny’s insults and takes them to heart (anyone remember the “hurt my feelings” scene in 7x25?). Danny absolutely does not get that at all (his response to Steve’s hurt is I never want to hurt your feelings). There’s this inherent miscommunication as they navigate their relationship where Danny snipes and Steve is hurt and Danny is confused and Steve doesn’t realize how much Danny cares because he doesn’t hear it.

TL;DR: Steve and Danny care about each other so much and someone just needs to smack whoever is preventing them from being together upside the head. I wasn’t kidding about that party, CBS.

Imagine the shipping division of the above MNC in each of these countries trying to secure the best rate for shipping their products from A to B which may translate into thousands of containers over a short period of time..

Or imagine you are one of the lucky service providers invited to bid or tender for this business.. Visualise the dynamics involved in coordinating the movement of these containers across the 20 operating companies into 200 countries for these thousands of containers..
