The idea of Mike “gently rejecting” Will in S5 is such a silly concept to me. It truly would make zero sense from a narrative perspective or from a character arc perspective. That’s why many Mlvn diehards don’t even really believe it will happen. They believe the show will move on without ever really addressing the Mike-shaped elephant in the room. They believe Will’s happy ending will simply consist of his friends and family accepting him and giving him a hug, and that’s it. And maybe he’ll get an unnamed bf in the finale. (That is, unless the show makes Will a secret villain and kills him off. Then at least he’d be interesting).
Some even take Will’s words at facevalue, believing that El truly commissioned the painting or at least that the intense romantic feelings Will described really belong to her. Now that Mike has confessed his love, they believe that S5 will finally consist of happy Mlvn couple moments, so there won’t be any time for Mike and Will to be together even as friends to talk about any lingering feelings. And why would there be time, since it’s the apocalypse after all, and Will is just a plot device and isn’t really relevant to anything? The Duffers must be exaggerating his importance to S5. The Core 4 is Mike, El, Lucas, and Dustin. Will’s romantic desires are meaningless.
They have to believe all this, cause if they don’t, and they still want to believe in Mlvn endgame, they have to conclude that Will’s emotional desires will be central to the plot of S5, Will’s feelings are the glue that put Mlvn back together, the painting will come up again because El didn’t actually commission it, Mike and Will will be close enough in S5 to have meaningful heart-to-hearts, AND Mike is 100% straight and will…. gently reject Will and promise to always be good pals; he just sadly doesn’t swing that way?
Silliness, objectively.
Anyway, Byler endgame.

BYLER CONFESSION RANT!!
this isn't a theory, I just really want this to happen..
ok, so imagine they have already confessed, I'm not talking about the initial confession in this. they say I like you more than a friend blah blah blah.
but they don't say I love you. yet.
i don't want this to happen at the end of any big battle, let me set the scene.
they are either in Mike's basement or Wills new bedroom (i have a big feeling the byers will move back to hawkins) and they are just existing together. maybe lying side by side reading a comic together, or maybe Wills painting and Mike's reading but actually watching him. it's quiet and Will notices the staring and neither of them are saying anything until Will pipes up and says. "I love you too" just quietly, with a smile. and Mike just smiles back with a slightly confused expression because Will said too at the end of it. "I didn't say it" and Will will just smile more, turn back to what he was doing and say, "you didn't have to"
why is this perfect??? because of like so many reasons!!!
not only would this be a parallel to when Mike said to Will "you didn't have to" when referring to Mike being an asshole. it's a very soft scene and there's clear flirting and it's just- we got so many beautiful byler scenes in s4 omg-
also, it would be a contrast to Mike saying it about El. he said it In a moment of distress and when everyone was around, and I personally think he was meaning that he loves her, not that he's in love with her. and then when he says it to her face, he's only saying it because he's being pushed to by people around him, and he's stressed and she might die. and he thinks it's what she wants to hear, which is partially true, and partially not.
it would also show Will being stronger and braver and accepting what he's getting, knowing that he deserves it. Mike hasn't Said it but he knows that Mike does, and instead of trying to act like he must not and he's making things up, he allows it, and accepts it as the truth and as something he deserves. he deserves to be in love and to be loved, him saying it first is to some degree, putting himself first and he's gonna start doing that more.
anyways yeah. actually my first fic has this kind of idea in it except it's at the end of a fight, which I think would be emotional but I just want it to be something that's theirs. so that's what I want to happen! 👍

dream byler kiss? (details, setting, how it would happens i wanna hear ur ideas)
hiiii i hope you're well<3
ok so dream byler kiss...
this is the scenario i imagine:
will is sitting in mike's room (he's staying there as long as the byers are in hawkins).
mike comes in. he's holding the painting and wants to talk about it. he had talked to el and she confirmed to him that she had nothing to do with the painting. will sees the painting and starts panicking.
mike asks will why he lied...why he said that el commissioned the painting from him when she didn't.
there is a pause...and mike reminds will that he can talk to him and tell him anything. but, will is terrified and tells mike this...that he's scared of losing him if he knows the truth. however, mike reassures will that he could never do anything to make mike want to leave.
this encourages will to open up and he finally confesses everything to mike.
as will talks (and goes into detail about how he's felt for the longest time), mike has a realization about his feelings.
and when will finally finishes pouring his heart out, he tries to leave, saying something like "but you love el so there's really no point of me feeling this way and i'll just leave you so it hurts less when you tell me that"
but mike grabs his arm and says "will...wait" then goes to give him a soft kiss, leaving will breathless. when they pull away, will is literally frozen to the ground. he asks mike "why...?" and mike says, "you don't know how i actually feel, will. it's always been you".
they smile and stare into each other's eyes before holding hands and going to fight whatever monster they have to fight next.
so...that's kind of how i want it to go :,) just something very sweet and low-stakes that allows them to really pour their hearts out to each other <3
tysm for the ask!!!

It's been 48 hours and this is all I'm talking about. Our beloved Funko are releasing new figures on Very Strange Cases and we see here Mike Wheeler with a painting of Will that symbolizes Will's love, symbolizes what Will and Mike have in common by their mutual feelings. Before Will gave Mike the painting there was some sort of confession from Mike, about how he missed Will and that Hawkins isn't the same without Will, these words influenced Will to take what he painted with him because of his love for Mike. They both made a veiled confession of love.
Tumblr media
Also, this painting unites them by the fact that D&D is like their sign of love, it's what they've had in common since childhood and it was this painting of D&D that Will gave to Mike as a gift, especially...Before that, he offered Mike to play as much as he wanted afterwards, to which Mike responded with a smile and agreed.
The painting is of great importance and he wouldn't have released this figure with this particular painting, they wouldn't have emphasized it again so much, because let's look at all the figures again. They mean something important.
Tumblr media
Chrissy is shown to us as her moment of death, she is Vecna's first victim. Henry becomes Vecna. Lucas and Max rekindle their relationship with the help of the figures and ask each other out. These are all important moments and we see Mike proudly holding Will's painting, which symbolizes Will's love and his and Will's connection (I think the painting plays a part, it will more than once and play a role in season 5).
But I want to think, why is Mike holding the painting with pride? It seems to me that here, he may already know that Will painted the picture, he knows about his feelings and everything is mutual. Or maybe it shows that Mike knows about Will lying about Al and he knows about what Will said about himself.

Mike coming out to Will sometime during season 5 before they’ve confessed their feelings for each other or anything hehe
For the writing prompt requests <3 also CONGRATS ON 1500 ANDI U DESERVE IT!!
hi elli!!! oh my god this prompt 🥺 this is so sweet, and it was so much fun to write. (side note i have now written like 3 coming out stories in the span of a week so. that's fun!) also tysm!!! <3 i hope you enjoy this!
you pull me in (and i’m a little more brave)
Mike Wheeler has two secrets.
He’s never really been a person who has liked keeping secrets, at least not from his friends. He’s kept secrets from his parents for his entire life, so that doesn’t really matter. But Mike has always tried to be honest with his friends. After all, the Party’s first rule isn’t “friends don’t lie” for nothing.
But Mike Wheeler has two secrets, and he’s kept them close to his chest for the past couple of years.
The first secret is this:
Mike Wheeler is gay.
Yeah, that… that had been something difficult to come to terms with. It all started back in the fall of 1985 before everything went to shit and before the world started ending and before they got trapped into an interdimensional war with One and the monsters of the Upside Down. Talk about an awful time to have a sexuality crisis.
Seriously. Mike spent… a lot of sleepless nights, absolutely terrified that his first big secret would be found out. When you’re fighting a monster who literally reaches into your brain and brings out the worst parts of you—the parts that you’re terrified to even admit to yourself—it’s really not a good idea to have this big of a secret.
At least… at least that’s what Will said when he came out as gay, early last year.
God, he’s the bravest person that Mike knows. There’s no one braver in the world than Will Byers—not even El, whom Mike believes is really fucking brave. But El, as incredible as she may be, is also a superhero. Of course, she can bravely face monsters and government scientists and anything the world throws at her. Mike thinks he’d be braver too if he was better than Superman.
Will’s just Will though, and he’s been through so much. And yet, he makes the decision to get back up every time the world tries to knock him down. He stands up against all the monsters and the bullies and every single being that’s ever hurt him, and yet, he still manages to be the kindest, most loving person Mike has ever met. He’s never lost sight of who he is, and everything he does inspires Mike to be braver.
There’s no one braver than Will Byers—no one better in the world than Will Byers.
And that’s exactly why Mike decides that Will Byers should be the first person in the world to learn his secret.
The two of them are sitting in Mike’s bedroom now. Earlier, he’d asked Will if they could talk—alone, he’d been quick to add. Naturally, Will had been a little bit confused, but he’d nodded and promised to come over to Mike’s room in the lab after dinner.
And so… here they are.
Mike’s heart pounds inside his chest, and his hands feel clammy. Of all the people in the world, Will is going to be the most accepting. Everyone in the extended Party has been accepting of Will and Robin (who’d come out a few months before Will), so honestly, Mike knows he shouldn’t worry about their reactions. But still, he’s never shared this secret with anyone before, and… and it’s terrifying.
But this is Will.
And Will makes him feel brave.
So, with Will Byers’ kind hazel eyes staring back at him, Mike takes a deep breath, and he wrings his hands nervously.
And he chooses to let his walls down.
“Will… I… I’m gay,” Mike admits, his voice impossibly soft. He doesn’t dare look up at his best friend—not yet. The memories of words so cruel and so hurtful, said years ago on a day full of pouring rain and his worst mistakes, make their way to the forefront of his mind. “I… I’ve known for a while now, and I, um… I didn’t want to admit it... But I… I don’t want to hide anymore.”
Another breath—shaky and quiet this time.
Mike dares to look up, and he meets Will’s eyes. “I, um… I said some things to you when we were younger,” Mike whispers, and though his vision is a little blurry because of the tears stinging his eyes, he can still see the recognition that flashes across Will’s face. “Some really, really hurtful things… and I’m sorry, Will. I… I know it’s no excuse, but… that’s when I was first starting to realize this about myself… And I was scared, and I took it out on you. And I’m sorry… I’m so sorry.”
One more breath. In and out.
“I wanted to tell you first,” Mike says, his voice soft, “not… not just because you’re gay too, but… but because you’re my best friend in the entire world, Will. And I just… I trust you more than anyone else, you know? And also… because you make me feel brave enough to be myself. So… yeah. That’s it, I guess.”
For a moment, Will just stares back at Mike, as if he’s searching for… for something or trying to understand Mike better. There’s curiosity but also compassion and understanding in Will’s eyes, and before Mike knows it, he’s being pulled into Will’s arms.
“Oh, Mike,” Will whispers, holding him close.
The embrace is warm and familiar and comforting, and God, fresh tears well in Mike’s eyes as he all but collapses into Will’s hug. Will’s arms wrap around him tighter in response, and Mike sniffles, burying his head in his best friend’s shoulder.
“I’m so proud of you,” Will murmurs, rubbing Mike’s back gently. “God, I am so, so proud of you, Mike. You have no idea. Thank you. Thank you for… for trusting me and for being you. You’re incredible, and I’m so proud of you.”
Somehow, just like he always does, Will knows exactly what to say. He knows exactly what Mike needs to hear, and Mike can’t help the watery laugh that escapes his lips. “I didn’t really do anything,” he admits. “Nothing that you haven’t done.”
“Hey.” Will pulls back, just enough so they can look at each other now, and he smiles at Mike, gentle and familiar. “Coming out is terrifying no matter what, and it’s not about me. It’s about you and how brave you are and how incredible it is that you’re accepting who you are. So… I mean it, Mike. I’m proud of you, and thank you for trusting me enough to tell me.”
Will pauses for a brief moment; then, he smiles again. “When I came out,” he says softly, “Robin told me this… She said that the world becomes a better, more beautiful place whenever anybody accepts who they are and shares it with the world. So… just remember that, okay?”
Mike can’t help but smile, and he reaches up, putting his hand on top of Will’s. “Okay,” he whispers back. “Thanks, Will… Seriously. Thank you for… for everything.”
The look on Will’s face turns soft again, and for a moment, the world shrinks until it’s just the two of them. Something wildly beautiful and familiar and electric lingers in the air between them, close enough for Mike to reach out and grab it, and he nearly does.
Because, you see, Mike Wheeler has two secrets—though, he’s now shared one of those secrets with someone and is starting to find the courage to share it with others.
The first secret is this:
Mike Wheeler is gay.
The second one is… a little more complicated than the first, and it’s this:
Mike Wheeler is in love with Will Byers.

mike wheeler is straight
Since there’s no period signifying the end of that sentence, I assume the whole sentence is ’Mike Wheeler is straight up going to confess his undying love for Will in season 5 of Stranger Things.’

what milevens refuse to acknowledge and will have to begrudgingly accept is that the events leading to the monologue were ultimately propelled by will’s lie about the painting, and a major lie at that. like they can brag about their love confession all they want but it’s an undeniable fact that the monologue wouldn’t have existed without the van scene happening beforehand. it was basically a domino effect of events (foreshadowed by argyle quite literally saying “mike wheeler, your dominoes are gonna fall” before the whole veiled love confession in the van).
mike was being honest? sure, but it would only be because he felt true love from will’s feelings for him (disguised as el’s) and thought that because of this, he could finally give el the kind of love she wanted from him. he didn’t just magically gain the ability to say “i love you”, he needed a key motivator in order to do that, which was ultimately based on a lie. to make this apparent, they wrote in the entire “you’re the heart” dialogue from will right before mike delivered his monologue, as a callback to the van scene and as a way of reminding the audience of will’s speech to mike. but what really makes me believe that the van scene and mike’s monologue are supposed to be associated with each other is the fact that being different and you’re the heart are basically two halves of a whole and form one song when combined.
i realized that all these discussions about whether mike intended to be genuine or was consciously lying in the monologue, don’t actually matter in the greater scheme of things because at the end of the day, mike’s words were majorly influenced by will giving mike this image of el that didn’t actually exist. mike’s last string of hope in saving his relationship with el (which is basically just him being afraid she’d not want to be a part of his life anymore if they truly broke up) happened because will lied to him about her feelings, and although will had good intentions, he had a false perception of mike and el’s relationship and how el truly saw mike. because of this, mike thought that his words were what el truly needed from him.
all of this will come back to bite the entire love triangle in the ass when mike inevitably learns the full truth behind the painting in season 5. because really, there’s no reason for them to make this entire storyline so elaborate if they don’t have something major planned for it. the painting either would've genuinely come from el so that the basis of mileven’s “love” would’ve been more authentic, or they wouldn't have made will lie about the painting and had mike gently reject him so that they could focus on letting him move on in season 5. hell, they would’ve closed the curtains in this plot already and gotten it over with sooner if they didn’t care enough about it. so why are they hellbent on dragging it out into the last season? because something will trigger the lies behind the painting to come out overflowing, and it would have a such a huge impact and actually alter the relationships in the love triangle.
maybe some people still don’t see the byler endgame vision, but you can’t deny that mileven’s relationship was doomed the moment mike was motivated by a lie to confess to el. because it automatically makes his words inauthentic and not strong enough. also, you don’t solve a couple’s relationship problems by heavily involving the second love interest and making him do so much work for them, unless you’re planning on setting up a huge payoff for him as a reward for his selflessness. everytime the writers had the other love interest attribute their acts of love to the partner of the person they have feelings for (like with jonathan telling nancy that steve took her home in order to make her feel secure in their relationship instead of telling the truth), said selfless love interest ended up with the person they wanted. because writing it this way makes the second love interest look more deserving of the love from the person in the middle of it all. because they’re the one shown to exert so much effort instead of their actual partner. this is not me trying to discredit el (because i know very well that she already did so much more than mike when it comes to the dedication put into keeping their relationship going), but more so me trying to point out the writing choices in the show and why they decided to put el in a situation where she wouldn’t be able to do all of what will has done for mike in season 4. why they decided that it would be will who managed to reassure mike and give him the exact kind of love he needed, why it was will who understood mike’s troubles and inner turmoils. it was a matter of showing who’s the more compatible partner for mike. let’s be honest, el wouldn’t have been able to understand what mike needed the way will did, because they were always struggling to actually connect with what the other person was trying to express and be on the same page. but will always connected well with mike. will knew that mike was feeling worthless and inferior, so he emphasized to mike how he was a leader/protector that inspired and guided the party. and mike loved hearing all of that, he was completely enamored and we even see him gulping and breathing hard. mike’s relationship with el was making him feel insecure and unneeded, but will was able to dispel that through one single painting and his own feelings for mike. it’s such a blatant way of showing the contrast between two love interests in a love triangle.
i guess one way milevens could disprove this giant piece of evidence and plotline is them desperately hoping that the painting has “fulfilled it’s purpose” and will never be brought up again, which, unfortunately, isn’t happening because the interview below basically confirms that mike learning the full truth behind the painting and will’s feelings for him will be carried over to the final season as a part of will’s journey, and it being resolved would complete his arc.
Tumblr media
in a way, the painting was a plot device, but not to fix mileven's relationship, it was a way of setting up mileven’s inevitable falling out and byler getting together where there’d quite literally be no way out and no other satisfying way to resolve this plotline anymore. it would only make sense if this was the intention because the truth literally heavily centers around will’s love for mike and how deep and beautiful it is, while el’s supposed feelings and words that made mike feel loved didn’t directly come from her and was expressed through a lie. byler was already set in stone through the van scene.

mike's gonna confess his love for will and it's gonna go something like this:
mike: will, i love you. it's always been you.
will: no you don't, mike. you don't want this.
and then i'm gonna shove my laptop in a blender and go stand in the middle of the highway.
the way will byers isn't going to believe for a second that mike wheeler is in love with him is going to haunt me until season 5 comes out and i'm forced to see it with my own two eyes. he's so used to being dissapointed and expecting the worst, i'm gonna lock myself in the oven bye.

A little Jancy season 5 scenario ficlet:
“Are we seriously going to talk about this right now?” Jonathan shouts, digging the axe into another vine.  “Well yea, Jonathan, if we’re going to die I'd like to know” Nancy counters, reloading her gun “I never said I didn't!” he defends, providing her coverage. “No, you just trashed all our plans” she accuses, firing off a shot  “I can't believe we're doing this” He complains, swinging the axe again “What was your plan exactly!?” she questions sarcastically, swapping the shotgun for something more practical.  “I don't know I didn't have one” Jonathan admits, throwing his hands up.  “Clearly!” “What do you want me to say exactly?”   “Duck” Nancy informs “What?” he questions, confused “DUCK!” she shouts, taking aim.  Jonathan complies in the nick of time, as Nancy sprays bullets into the monster.  “You never even asked what I wanted, you just dragged me along like always” he accuses, taking a swing at a demobat “Like Always!?” she protests “Yes like always, Jonathan let’s go hunt a monster, Jonathan let’s burn down the lab, Jonathan let’s investigate these rats even though we could get fired” He mocks, adding fuel to the fire “Yea well you went along with it” Nancy reminds him. “Yea and maybe that’s the problem”  He argues  “OH you are unbelievable” she screams  “Nance” he calls “Do you seriously think I don’t know when you’re lying?” she contends  “Nancy” he tries again  “Or when you’re pushing me away for some bullshit noble reason” She chides “Nancy!” “And what I’m just supposed to ditch you, settle for some boring guy, and end up like my parents?!” she hypothesizes  “NANCY!!” he shouts panicked Jonathan tackles her to the ground, cradling the back of her head. She feels more than sees the fire. She holds him a little tighter, reminded of how close to death they actually are this time. The fire dies down and cold snaps back almost instantaneously and he lifts his head quickly to look at her.  “Are you ok? Are you ok?” He questions anxiously She nods in response and pulls him back down, desperate to keep him in the safety of her arms.  “I don’t know what I’m doing” he confesses quietly into her neck.  “Deja vu” she snarks  “I’m serious, I can’t lose you” Jonathan clarifies, pulling up to look her in the eye again.  “You won’t” she promises, knowing she can’t really keep it. “I mean if- ” he starts  “Do you want to break up?” she cuts him off  “No. But I don’t want to hold you back” he worries  “You think I'd let you?” She quizzes, raising an eyebrow “No, but… I don’t know… I’m just… scared” he admits  “Me too” she confesses  “Yea?” “Yea.”  “I guess we could figure it out together” Jonathan offers, moving some stray hairs out of her face. “I guess we could,” she agrees, taking his left hand and linking it with hers. Jonathan seals their compromise with a kiss, cradling her head gently and pushing their scars together. Nancy loses herself in it, in him, temporarily forgetting that it’s the end of the world. All that exists is them, their love for each other, and this moment. “Seriously?!? In the middle of an apocalypse!?!” Will shouts at them disgusted  “Gross” Mike yells “That’s true love my dudes” Argyle comments “Or shared trauma” Jonathan jokes to her softly   “I love you too” Nancy responds, with a small laugh  “C’mon Wheeler, save the world first, make out later” He instructs, offering a hand to help her up “I’ll have you know I’m an excellent multitasker, Byers” she quips with a grin “I’m well aware”  he states, with a look she can’t help but smile at before raising onto her tiptoes to give him another quick kiss.

Something that could easily be slipped into a vest or behind a wallet or in the depths of an unsuspecting purse; if Eddie carried that sort of thing. ...Oh, but the journal is tantalizing. Within arm's reach. A little thing; red cover, silver spiral, lined paper. No way of identifying who it belongs to. Unless..." OR A 5+1 Where Eddie Reads 5 of Steve's Journal Entries and Steve Reads One Eddie Writes To Him OR I had a crazy little thought one night and wanted to try my hand at a 5+1. feel like we should focus on what they’re saying here: will’s journey is going to continue. they’re going to give answers as to why the upside down is stuck on the day will disappeared in season 5 and that it is a KEY PLOT POINT. so basically what i gathered from this is will byers main character arc coming in regards to his connection to the upside down and his love for mike.

they don’t want to leave any loose ends. they want all the characters to feel complete. they acknowledge the characters have been changing and who have we said has changed a lot since s1 and 2? michael wheeler. we also do not understand why he has changed, but with the duffers saying they want the arcs for everyone to feel complete that means we’re going to get an answer as to why he’s been acting the way he has. they also say “who’s going to end up with who” ok and let’s see which relationships are being questioned right now especially after volume 2: mike and el (people are seeing mike’s confession was off and that their relationship is falling apart), we have the nancy/jonathan/ steve love triangle, and we know will is in love with mike and that mike has been acting a certain way towards him that hasn’t been explained and they don’t want to leave any relationships ambiguous. they want an ending. anyways we’re getting answers in s5 and the duffers also said s5 is part 2 to s4 so maybe our theories for vol 2 were actually for s5? all i know is will byers is going back to being the main character and my hope for byler has gone up.

Season 5, and Vecna frequently send messages through the gang like the one he sent through Nancy. One day, a message is sent where the intent is clear - give up William Byers, and everyone else is safe. Obviously, everyone immediately rejects the idea, but Will says he’s willing to die for this cause. Mike immediately shuts the idea down with a line like “we’re not losing you again. We’ll think of something else”. The next day, Will is missing and Mike knows exactly where he’s gone. We’re all thinking “what the fuck this is episode four how are they already killing Will”. Mike rushes to the nearest gate (near his house) and runs after Will. When he catches up with him, they fight over Will’s decision to give himself up. Will says he’s been a burden since the day he went missing and he needs to finally do something helpful. Mike says he’s never been a burden and he’d rather be at Vecna’s whim forever than let Will kill himself. When emotions reach their highest, feelings overflow and one of the boys accidentally confess to their love for the other, which stops them both right in their tracks. Mike kisses Will. After, they just stand there, in the Upside Down version of the Wheeler’s garage, hugging, vowing not to lose each other ever again. Might write this at some point.
