so i was thinking about mike's bassment beats spotify playlist and how the first song in said playlist is smalltown boy by bronski beat - a song about the need for gay men in the 80s to flee from homophobic small towns to the freedom of the city and i thought about looking up the meanings of the other songs included in the playlist to see what other hints there are to mike's character
i was also thinking about how significant it is that smalltown boy is the opening track to the playlist and i wondered about what the final track to mike's playlist is as that would seem equally significant to me
so the last track on the playlist is be afraid by franz ferdinand and the lyrics go as such:
Don't be afraid if you hear voices
Feel the sweet air spoken upon you
Dream again
Sometimes the sound of a thousand whispering
it's pretty short in terms of lyrics and has less of a clear meaning compared to smalltown boy so i thought i'd google the meaning of the song just to see if there were any explanations from the band or a sort of general opinion on the song meaning which i didn't end up finding, however i did come across another song by franz ferdinand almost immediately called micheal and i thought well that's a coincidence (but not really) so i looked up what the meaning to that song was and lo and behold
so it's about a gay man who wants to be with another man called micheal
the music video is set in a basement
and the song contains hidden secret messages such as how the show queer codes mike
but also it's interesting how in the song the hidden messages can only be heard when played backwards
kind of like upside down...
bonus thought! the lyrics to smalltown boy:
Mother will never understand why you had to leave
But the answers you seek will never be found at home
The love that you need will never be found at home
and the hidden message in the song michael:
She’s worried about you. Call your mother.

What do you think Mike's favorite song or what songs do you want to hear in st5 (Idk how asks works so sorry if this is weird)?
Ooooh this is such a good question and thank you for being my first ask!! I have legit never thought about this before (which is shocking cuz I love music so much) and I don’t listen to much 80s music on my own so I’m not very familiar, but I’ll give it a shot.
I am in the process of listening through the Mike’s Basement Beats playlist but haven’t finished yet so this may change, and this is also purely my opinion based on my music taste, so I’m sure it’s probably not too accurate.
Anyways, to actually answer the question: I think Mike’s favorite song would either be Smalltown Boy (basic, I know) or Mad World which are both from his playlist and I think just really fit his character. As for songs I want to hear in s5: Boys Don’t Cry, Heroes, or either song I said before (just cuz I like them 😂)
I also want to say if we’re including modern songs in this: Family Line and Devil Town and Dollhouse are all songs I really relate to Mike.
Again, I may end up changing my mind on this, and if I do I’ll let you know 😉

If you somehow haven’t listened to Mike’s Bassment Beats (or even if you have) PLEASE pay special attention to one song in particular:
You may think of Smalltown Boy first and while YES that is an incredible Mike Wheeler-core Byler-coded song… it did not hit me like “Running In the Night” by FM-84 and I don’t think any other song ever will
It’s literally impossible to listen to this song with Mike in mind and NOT believe Byler is real.
My other fav Byler anthems from this playlist:
When Love Breaks Down by Prefab Sprout
Love Is a Stranger by Eurythmics
Something About You by Level 42
Cars by Gary Numan
Honorable mention from Will’s Castle Byers Classics:
Creature Comfort by Arcade Fire
In conclusion, Mike’s Bassment Beats is the only Byler confirmation I need and I will be listening to it for the rest of my life!

mikes basement beats!
Every Day Is Halloween!!!
please just listen. its so perfect for s4 mike.
lyric ex:
"I have given up hiding and started to fight
I have started to fight"
(mike becoming himself in high school w the help of eddie)
"Well any time, any place, anywhere that I go
All the people seem to stop and stare
They say 'why are you dressed like it's Halloween?
You look so absurd, you look so obscene'"
(hellfire shirts, longer hair)
"Oh, why can't I live a life for me?
Why should I take the abuse that's served?
Why can't they see they're just like me
I'm not the one that's so absurd
Why hide it why fight it?
Hurt feelings best to stop feeling hurt
Denials, reprisals
It's the same it's the same in the whole wide world"
(internalized homophobia, "mikes trying to be as normal as possible," hurt feelings from will)
the list goes on

Steve innocently asks, "Can I woo him?" during the dnd game currently going on in the Wheeler's basement.
Eddie blinks once, twice, before all the wires in his brain reconnect, and he gives Steve an amused grin. "You want to 'woo' my character?" He hopes no one can hear how fast his heart is beating as he watches Steve push their two custom-made figurines closer together. If anyone else had touched Eddie's figurine, he would have smacked their hand away.
"I want to take him to the tavern and buy him a drink."
"To get him drunk and make him spill the whereabouts of the map?" Dustin asks. Eddie leans back in his chair and watches the two of them bicker, his hand pulls a piece of hair in front of his face to hide the flustered smile pulling at his lips.
Steve scrunches up his face and shakes his head. "No, I'm wooing him, Dustin. Are you not listening?" Steve looks up at Eddie, his eyes full of determination. "Let me woo him." He says this with a nod at Eddie's figurine.
"Stop saying woo." Mike groans into his hands.
Eddie pretends to think about it for a moment. He holds up one finger and ducks behind his dm screen to 'consult' the books. "Hmm." He hums and peaks over the screen at Steve, who anxiously chews on his bottom lip while fidgeting with a d8. "You may woo me - uh - I mean, Sir Edward."
"Can I roll to stab Sir Edward? I do not want to watch this."
Eddie shushes Mike and nods at Steve, who bounces excitedly in his chair. "Go ahead, big boy. Give it your best shot." If only Steve knew that he's already got Eddie and Sir Edward completely enamoured, no further wooing necessary.

Eddie “Speak First, Think Later” Munson struck again.
A rainy spring Saturday had the Hellfire Club gathered for an impromptu meeting in the Wheeler basement. Eddie whipped out a campaign that he’d been saving, somehow just as detail-rich as the ones he’d meticulously prepared for regular Friday sessions. It had gone on for hours until Dustin, the last player standing, rolled to cast a fireball and was met with utter failure.
“Damn, and here I thought this was one of my weaker ones.” Eddie popped a sour cream and onion chip in his mouth, crunching down with a triumphant grin. “Looks like I’m unstoppable. Impenetrable. Invincible, even.”
“Yeah, whatever,” Gareth muttered, but there was no missing his own smile as he added, “tell that to Chrissy Cunningham.”
Chrissy Cunningham? Your stomach dropped at the mention of her name. You’d noticed him glancing over at her table in the cafeteria, and saw him at her locker a few times, but that didn’t mean…
Jeff snorted. “He can’t tell her anything without looking like a total moron. ‘H-Hey, Chrissy. Nice hair, um, thing.’”
“I do not sound like that, asshole.”
“Dude, you said that exact sentence in algebra yesterday. It was a direct quote.”
Your throat was scratchy from shouting during the game, but you cleared it and forced yourself to speak. “What’s going on with Chrissy?”
Grant ignored the glare that Eddie preemptively gave the rest of the guys. “Our fearless leader is smitten with the Queen of Hawkins High,” he teased. Mike, Dustin, and Lucas all underscored his statement with obnoxious kissy noises.
“Shut up!” Eddie yelled, but it only further spurred them on.
“Don’t be shy,” Dustin said through his laughter. “Everyone knows you loooooove her!”
You didn’t. Okay, maybe a part of you did, but your optimism—or perhaps naivety—dismissed the idea. Because if he loved Chrissy, that meant he didn’t love you. It meant the long hugs and arms slung over your shoulder were platonic. That the deep conversations late into the night were simply between friends.
“I don’t love her,” Eddie retorted, his pinkening cheeks giving him away. “I just think she’s cute, okay?”
“Cute?” Lucas said. He rolled his eyes. “Puppies are cute. Kittens are cute. Babies are—”
“Fine, I think she’s the most beautiful girl I’ve ever seen in my goddamn life!” Eddie snapped, but a soft smile tugged at the ends of his lips. “Are you idiots happy now?”
The most beautiful girl he’d ever seen in his life. In his life.
Happy? You were the farthest thing from happy.
Your eyes blurred with tears, blinking them back and timing a sniffle with the crinkling of the chip bag as Mike passed it to Lucas. If you could pull yourself together, you could excuse yourself before you broke down completely.
“Dude.” Jeff looked at Eddie, pulling his gaze to you despite your reluctance to even glance his way. “She’s a girl.”
“Oh, shit.” Eddie chuckled, snagging his Mountain Dew can from the snack table and taking an extended swig. “It’s not like I’m gonna have sex with my best friend, though.”
Gareth feigned a pout. “I thought I was your best friend.”
“Yeah, well, I’m not having sex with you either.”
You watched as Eddie finished his soda, crushing the can in his fist and tossing it at the drummer’s curly mop of hair.
It’s not like I’m gonna have sex with my best friend.
Not even a pause. Not a moment of consideration. Nothing close to the movie-esque scene where the boy realized that the girl of his dreams had been right in front of him the whole time.
Mustering up a half-smile, you pushed yourself off of the couch. “I’m gonna head home. I’m pretty beat.”
Beat. Broken. Destroyed. Shattered.
Eddie sat up, brushing Lays crumbs onto his jeans and leaving them shiny with oily residue. “Let me drive you,” he offered.
You shook your head. “N-No, I wanna walk.”
“It’s raining,” he protested.
“It’s fine.”
That may have been the first time you’d declined the chance to spend time alone with him. You lived for the days you’d climb into the passenger seat of his van after Hellfire, resting your head against the window as it vibrated from the bass of the radio speakers.
Eddie shrugged. “Suit yourself,” he said, turning his attention back to the guys.
He didn’t come after you. You heard his laughter echoing around the basement as you ascended the stairs, barely managing to close the door before you burst into tears.
Everything you wanted Eddie to feel for you, he felt for Chrissy. The thought of watching his eyes follow her around the cafeteria on Monday roiled a sickness within you.
You wished you’d never showed up to the Wheelers’ today. Although it wouldn’t have changed Eddie’s love for Chrissy—or his lack of love for you—at least you could continue pretending that there was hope.
Now, you had nothing but a broken heart.
