Good deed of the day, and I hope somebody would do the same for me !!
I *~*coincidentally*~* went up a side street on my way to grab food this evening. Ended up pulling over to turn around, but I sat for a minute to look at my gps. As I started to turn back, a guy parked in front of me (i didnt even realize somebody was in the car) started to pull out too and he hit a car passing by us. I was like oooo that sucks…. Started to go on about my business and then I realized the idiot who caused it was doing a 3 point turn in an attempt to flee. So I grabbed my phone really quick and took as many pics as I could as the asshole drove off. The guy who got hit started to go after him but I stopped him and exchanged the photos with him. I’m so glad I was there to help, it was like it was meant to be. Otherwise he would have gotten away with it. I’ve had ppl hit and run on me before and it happens all the time, so fuckkkk those guys. Dude didn’t even have handles on his doors. 😒 Makes me wonder how many times he’s fled wrecks. Anyway, the guy who got hit thanked me a bunch and told me people in LA wouldnt usually go out of their way to do something like that for somebody else. I said “well, I’m from the midwest….” lollll. I’m so glad I could be there to help. I hope somebody would do the same for me.

𝓑𝓻𝓲𝓰𝓱𝓽 𝓑𝓵𝓾𝓮 𝓗𝓪𝓲𝓻 𝓕𝓮𝓪𝓽𝓱𝓮𝓻𝓼 𝓪𝓷𝓭 𝓞𝓷𝓵𝓲𝓷𝓮 𝓘𝓬𝓸𝓷𝓼
When I was 13 and 14 and 15 years old, I wanted more than anything to live in California. To be a part of the saturated, purple-tinted fantasy world I knew from online. When I finally visited Los Angeles for the first time, I wanted it even more. I listened to The 1975 for the first time bathed in purple LEDs under invisible stars in my Aunt’s backyard. Fallingforyou muffled by chlorinated water was the soundtrack to a summer spent posting photos for people back home. Look where I am! Look what I’m doing!
Somewhere along the line I turned 16 and 17 and 18 and the internet-dictated aesthetics that I obsessed over changed. Los Angeles became New York. Sparkling lights, leather and red lipstick replaced sun-soaked palm trees and cutoff shorts. And now I’m 20, living in the city with a sick ass leather jacket and I’ll never go home again. I have the freedom we always dreamed of. I can go anywhere now, take the train uptown or into Brooklyn, see shows alone dressed up as the girl who once only existed in my daydreams, slip through crowds anonymously, get lost in the motion of it all. I’m not confined to the walls of my bedroom in my suburban house where my access to these fantasies was strictly through the internet.
Entering my teenage years, I wanted to be part of a vastly different reality. Online, I had the power to create this new reality. I made Youtube videos from my midwest bedroom, fairy lights dotting the background, and sent them out into the void. Some people I knew IRL thought it was cool, others didn’t. Which was fine, I didn't care that much, kind of. I kept my Tumblr a secret from everyone, but I never really blogged about myself anyways - I was more of a watcher there than anything else, getting inspired stylistically and artistically. I found artists and bloggers to look up to, icons I wanted to embody. I feel strangely nostalgic for this time. For my bright blue hair feather and for the first messages exchanged between long-lasting internet friendships.
In this ongoing project, I reflect on the processes of losing and finding ourselves in the dark hours of the night, faces lit by pixelated screens and brains wired from endless scrolling through the pages of our favorite online icons. Who were we then? Who are we now? How have our digital identities changed and how has the internet influenced us IRL?
This page will act as an archive for all things related to this project; written memories, video and photo content, objects as artifacts, etc!

My First Roll of Kodak Gold 200 in Medium Format
Late last month Kodak announced the return of Kodak Gold, a budget favorite in the world of medium speed color film, in medium format aka 120 film. A few days following that announcement, a special package arrived from Kodak with my name on it. Inside there was a pair of test rolls, and I was excited to take some out into the field for an early morning shoot. And to share the love, I gave one roll to my buddy Tariq Tarey so Gold 200 could have the proper studio treatment.
Now I’ve been shooting medium format film for 12 years at this point, the hardest part about this whole test was trying to figure out what camera to shoot! The first option would be to go with the camera that started my whole film photography journey, the Hasselblad 500C. That camera helped me re-ignite this very blog with The 52 Project, and had me running through enough film that I eventually met-up with Mike and “the gang” over at The Film Photography Podcast. Another potential option would have been a roll-film back hooked up to a 4x5” large format camera. That would keep the pace closer to my typical large format experience, and give me the versatility of choosing a different medium format aspect ratio. In the middle of trying to decide what I was going to shoot, I headed over to Midwest Photo to see if they’d be willing to develop and scan the new Gold 200 on their Fujifilm Frontier medium format film scanner. And that’s when I saw her sitting there at the used equipment counter:
The lovely thing about 120 film is the versatility of medium format cameras. There are modern, AF enabled, interchangeable lens bodies that expose 15 shots per roll all the way to giant boxes that expose nearly all the film in one go. Somewhere on the “box camera” end of that spectrum lies the Fujifilm G617. At first glance it looks like a rangefinder camera, but the Fujifilm G617 doesn’t feature a rangefinder patch. It uses a helicoid focus ring in front of its large format style 105mm f/8 lens, and has a fixed wide angle view finder to help with composition. Even more impressive than the wide field of view, the G617 captures 2.83:1 panoramic aspect ratio photograph, using 6cm x 17cm worth of real estate. The cost? Each roll of 120 film only gives you FOUR exposures! In the gamble of shooting with film, 6x17 medium format is like betting at the $10 blackjack table. High risk aside, I just had to take the G617 for a spin.
With an almost-large-format camera in hand, what better place to take it than one of my old haunts, Old Man’s Cave down in the Hocking Hills. Many of the waterfalls you’ll find in the Hocking Hills region require a downward hike through rocks carved by glaciers thousands of years ago. The valleys surrounding the sights give photographers a few extra minutes at sunrise and sunset to get the shot just right. Sunrise was scheduled for 6:30AM, and for a mid-April morning it was surprisingly chilly (I’m pretty sure it was snowing in Northern Ohio that morning!). By the time I parked the car, loaded up the camera, filmed a little b-roll, and made the trek down to the Middle Falls it was a few minutes before 7AM. The first exposure on the roll was a composition similar to one I’d made back in 2014, but this time a bit wider and IN COLOR! To get all those lovely shadow details on the rocks, my Reveni Labs Spotmeter indicated 6 seconds at f/16.
One of the first things I noticed about the “look” of Gold 200 is how well it handles the mixed, reflected light throughout the Middle Falls of Old Man’s Cave. There’s a hint of warmth is the backlit sunrise peaking in through the upper middle part of the frame, with the rest of the cold, blue-green light bouncing off of the mossy rocks and trees. There’s some added vibrance to the green and aqua of the rocks, but nowhere near as much as I’d expect to see with Ektar 100 or Portra 400. As for grain, forget about it; these negatives would need to be enlarged 20x or more to start to see grain.
With the first frame down and the sun coming up, I needed to make the call whether I would venture towards the Lower Falls or go against the grain and check out the Devil’s Bathtub and Upper Falls. Both trails have their merits, but early in the morning I find it best to head further down into the cave. Following the water down through Old Man’s Cave, I arrived at another very familiar scene, one that I’ve photographed at least a dozen times (even a few in color!). Surely a new film would offer it’s own unique rendition. Out the corner of my eye I saw the sun start to graze the tops of the staircase to the upper left of the frame, so I needed to hurry. The added light reduced my exposure by nearly two stops, but also increased contrast. With Kodak Gold 200 being a negative film (C-41 process), it didn’t bat an eye at the overexposure, leaving me with readable highlights and delicate, low grain shadows.
This shot of Middle Falls was my favorite from the morning. It wasn’t too warm or too punchy, but it did a great job rendering the subtle tonal shifts as direct sun started to overtake the cold, reflected morning light. A piece of advice I’d received over a decade ago from a photographer working in panoramic formats came in handy here,
”If you place interesting subject matter along the edges of your frame, the rest of the picture will take care of itself.” - John Powers, Photographer
At the half-way point on the roll of Kodak Gold and one major location left, it was time to take the stairs down to the Lower Falls. The sun had been up for an hour at this point and I was starting to hear the sounds of other folks on the trail. Being the last waterfall stop at Old Man’s Cave, Lower Falls tends to have a higher rate of flow as well as a bit to wade through when setting up the camera. I don’t recall ever having made it this far on the trail with color film, but I was excited to see how Gold 200 would render the contrasting cool and warm tones on the rocks underneath the falls.
This is first photograph of Lower Falls is a great example of where I’d love to have access to some “rise”. In large format (sometimes other formats), rise and fall are movements that allow the photographer to shift the lens plane and/or film plane. This has the ability to change the perspective and shift the vanishing point in the photograph; an incredibly useful tool in landscape photography, especially with wide fields of view. In my opinion, a few millimeters of rise on the 105mm lens would have really elevated this composition.
Three photographs down, one to go. With this last frame I wanted to take another stab at the Lower Falls, hoping to find more leading lines for the panoramic frame. Fortunately a hundred meters or so away there was a downed tree that was calling my name. It took some stepping over flat rocks and fording ice cold water, but I found my frame and started to lower the tripod to accentuate the lines of the tree. Somewhere between all of that tripod shifting and the two second exposure I must have bumped the film door of the Fujifilm G617. Were it not for that little light streak, this would have been my favorite shot of the day.
Overall I’m really happy with how my first roll of Kodak Gold in 120 developed. These results are making want to grab a few more rolls and keep experimenting with color. The next time I’m out with some Gold 200, I’d like to try it with more creative filters and some different light. But will the next time take place with a 6x17? Probably not; I loved the panoramic look, but I need to give the Hasselblad 500C a workout with some portraits.
Big thanks to Tim and the team at Kodak Alaris for sending over the rolls of Kodak Gold 200 for me to test, and Midwest Photo for facilitating the rental camera and processing. Gold 200 is available now, and later this year we’ve got Cinestill 400D (35mm, 120, AND 4x5!) and Fugufilm 400 (35mm slide film!) coming. So far 2022 is shaping up to be a great one for film photography!

Hi lovely! I’m new to your blog and adore your shanks imagines! I saw you have both a “Benn marriage head cannons” and “Shanks marriage head cannons”, but I was wondering if you would be willing to write head cannons for being married to both Shanks and Benn (like poly relationship head cannons)? Thanks ;)
Poly Shanks and Benn marriage head cannons
Sfw
So these two spoil you rotten, no joke, if you even look at something for too long they'll assume you want it, and it'll be in your possession by the end of the day.
They feel very lucky to have you
Benn feel lucky he doesn't have to rangle Shanks on his own, and even though you and Shanks are partners in chaos, you usually pull him away from doing something stupid.
Shanks feels lucky because he has someone to cause trouble with
Out of all of you, Shanks is the most affectionate.
They bring you along on their adventures and if you get tired they take turns giving you piggyback rides
Benn is, naturally, the most responsible one in the relationship. He's the one who handles your finances, so you never have to worry about budgeting.
Y'all have nightly cuddle piles and live all in the same room.
Shanks steals all the blankets, but it's fine because Benn is usually warm enough you don't need one.
Your bed usually looks like a nest because it has so many blankets and pillows on it, and because it's never made, no matter how much Benn tries to keep it neat.
Neither of them can cook for shit
Shanks will burn down the kitchen if he's left unattended
Benn can make edible food, but it's painfully Midwest, no flavor at all, think raisins in casserole.
Shanks and Benn will use your shower products, so buy lots
They don't care if they wander around smelling like your body wash.
Shanks will even use your razor, benn won't, but if you don't like that you have to stick it in a drawer or something.
Wear their clothes, please they love it, even though their clothes are all too big for you.
All date nights are planned by Shanks, he's the more romantic out of the two
Each date is always unique and fun
Benn has a box of keep sakes from dates, anniversaries, and just anything you have exchanged like letters, gifts, flowers, little rocks you give him, etc.
He hides it under the bed and he likes to look through it anytime he adds something to it. He has it so he doesn't forget a single moment with the two of you.
Shanks found it one day and started his own
When you found their boxes you bought them nice wood boxes so that they didn't have to use shoe boxes.
Shanks loves taking pictures of all of you and the crew. He puts them in organized photo albums.
You all have long conversation, while star gazing on the deck of the Red Force late into the night
Shanks likes dancing with you, Benn's a little too shy to dance with you in public.
But in private, he will dance with you, he's not good at it, but he doesn't care, he just wants to have fun with you
When y'all go out exploring you never have to sleep on the ground, because you get to sleep on one of them or you get to sleep on their blankets or cloaks.
Nsfw
They do take you together sometime
Sometimes individually
Benn prefers individually, because soon as one of them is off of you the other starts working on you.
He likes seeing you an overstimulated blissed out mess
Peg them please, they'll love you for it
Shanks is a bisexual switch so sometimes while he's fucking you, Benn will come up and fuck him from behind.
Benn is a pansexual top, so he'll be reluctant to let you top him.
Shanks is also a brat, so if you're a brat Benn will be in heaven and in trouble.
Shower sex between all three of you was forbidden because one time Benn accidentally elbowed Shanks in the face, making him fall and giving him a concussion.
Benn never forgave himself and refuses to participate in fear of doing it again
Shanks and you once decided to wear lingerie for Benn as a joke, but he ended up really liking it so it became a normal thing in your bedroom,
Shanks in fact prefers wearing silk underwear because of it.
You and Shanks usually need to coax Benn into opening up about and indulging in his more... Exotic fetishes.
Let's just say there's now a new bed frame in your room that allows him to tie you two up or down at the same time, and a trunk full of rope, handcuffs, gags, and all sorts of accoutrement in the closest.
Shanks however has no shame, and is very open about his fantasies.

Computer Design, Research, and Learning Center
Architecture: LMN Architects
Location: Chicago, IL, USA
LMN Architects in collaboration with Booth Hansen is pleased to celebrate the design and construction of the new Computer Design, Research, and Learning Center at the University of Illinois in Chicago. Located at a unique prominent site on campus, the structure celebrates the garden and elliptical form of the Harry W. Pearce Memorial Grove and establishes a new front door for technology in downtown Chicago.
The University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) is Chicago’s only public research university and one of the most diverse universities in the United States. The new 135,000 SFT Computer Design, Research, and Learning Center (CDRLC) at UIC will consolidate the currently fragmented Computer & Science Department in a new home and co-locate it with a large cluster of university-administered classrooms at the heart of the east campus. The building is designed to be a welcoming, inclusive, and inviting space for the diverse student body. The building will serve research needs with state-of-the-art facilities, accommodate the rapidly increasing undergraduate enrollment in computer science and become a new campus hub.
“Illinois is home to the best universities and research centers in the world and boasts a talented workforce that attracts companies from across the globe,” said Governor JB Pritzker. “This new learning center on the UIC campus, made possible through funding from our historic bipartisan Rebuild Illinois capital plan, will further cement the university’s place as a world-class institution that excels in preparing talented students for the careers of tomorrow.”
“This project is a top priority to meet the needs of students in our growing computer science program and helps to strengthen the high-tech boom in Chicago. We are grateful to Governor Pritzker for his support,” said UIC Chancellor Michael D. Amiridis.
“The new CDRLC represents the future of higher education at UIC and is intended to be a welcoming space to promote innovation, collaboration, and discovery. We placed an intentional emphasis on the public spaces, research labs and collaborative areas to enhance the experience that each student will have, and it has been a pleasure collaborating with LMN Architects and Booth Hansen,” said Peter Nelson, Dean, UIC College of Engineering. “Students at UIC will have a new building on campus where they can unleash their curiosity and enjoy a space that is focused on learning, research and teamwork.”
The CDRLC is the third recent academic building to be built on the east campus originally designed by Walter Netsch in 1965. The building will be delivered on an accelerated schedule to meet the demands of the department, doubling its capacity by 2023. It will create a hub for both engineering and computer science that includes research areas comprised of faculty offices, collaboration areas, dry lab and specialty lab; administrative and student affairs office spaces; collaborative teaching and learning spaces for undergraduate and graduate students; an undergraduate learning and community center; and a flexible events room; all stitched together by a five-story daylit atrium.
“Together with the department, University, and CBD, our team of LMN and Booth Hansen have designed the building to become a welcoming hub, a building that embraces the old and presents an iconic new presence along Taylor Street,” says LMN Partner Stephen Van Dyck, AIA. “Throughout the design process, we have been inspired by the convergences that this project represents. At the heart of it all is the convergence of UIC’s mission and the region’s growing tech prominence. For so many in the region, this new building will symbolize opportunity.”
Creating a contemporary addition to this iconic brutalist campus, the building is functional, flexible, and respectful of the context. Located at a unique, prominent site on campus, the structure celebrates the natural setting and organic form of the Memorial Grove and establishes a new front door for technology in Chicago.
Together with the existing lab building, the new CDRLC creates a dramatic public atrium for social interactions with visual and physical connections to all floors. The refined precast concrete and terra cotta façade of the building are inspired by Netsch’s late modern architecture and respond to the site conditions and the Memorial Grove.
“The creation of the Computer Design, Research, and Learning Center at UIC is the type of investment Illinois needs to give our students a competitive advantage in the digital age. I’m fortunate to have an incredible research facility like UIC in my district, and I look forward to seeing the output of this building once complete,” stated State Representative Lakesia Collins.
“The announcement of the new Computer Design, Research, and Learning Center at UIC is crucial in order for the university to keep producing the incredible talent that it does. This state-of-the-art facility will further enhance the research taking place at UIC, while also welcoming prospective students to a unique learning environment,” said State Senator Patricia Van Pelt. “I look forward to seeing this project completed in such an expedited timeframe, doubling the capacity of the Computer & Science Department in just two years,” added Van Pelt.
David Mann, Booth Hansen Principal, Comments: “The new building will be located adjacent to one of the original Netsch buildings, near other College of Engineering facilities and Memorial Grove. This unique site allows for an innovative design that is inspired by the context, materiality, and qualities of precast concrete material. The project breaks free from the rigid orthogonal character of the campus with a more organic connected form that reframes this edge of campus and the Grove.”
Building on UIC’s successes with geo-thermal energy resources, the project will include a substantial new geo-thermal farm in the Memorial Grove, and the building has been designed to achieve LEED Gold certification. Reflecting a complex organization of requirements, the building will prompt students to cross paths with one another and enhance intellectual exchange. The atrium will be porous and dynamic with connections to the campus and the community, honoring the past and looking to the future.
Booth Hansen has collaborated with many academic institutions in the Midwest over the last 40 years. Those colleges and universities include the University of Illinois Chicago, Northwestern University, University of Chicago, Columbia College, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, University of Wisconsin-Madison and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
LMN Architects is a leader in the design of higher education facilities across the United States. Other completed projects include the Bill & Melinda Gates Center for Computer Science & Engineering at the University of Washington; the Voxman Music Building at the University of Iowa in Iowa City; the Anteater Learning Pavilion at the University of California, Irvine; and the Huntsman School of Business Addition at Utah State University in Logan, Utah.

Giacomo Colosimo , better known as Big Jim Colosimo, was an Italian-American mafia crime boss who built a criminal empire in Chicago based on prostitution, gambling, and racketeering. Immigrating from Italy in 1895, he gained power through petty crime and the heading of a chain of brothels. He would lead the Chicago mafia from about 1902 until his death in 1920. When prohibition went into effect in 1920, Johnny Torrio, an enforcer Colosimo imported in 1909 from New York, pushed for the gang to enter into bootlegging, but Colosimo refused. In May 1920, Colosimo left Chicago to marry his second wife, Dale Winter (he had deserted his first wife). After Colosimo returned to Chicago a week later, Torrio called him and let him know about a shipment arriving at his cafe. When Colosimo appeared at the cafe to wait for its delivery, he was shot and killed. The initial murder suspect was his new wife but no one was ever arrested for the murder. It was widely believed that Torrio ordered Colosimo's killing so that the gang could enter the lucrative bootlegging business. Torrio reportedly brought in New York colleague, Frankie Yale, to murder Colosimo. Al Capone has also been suspected as Colosimo's assassin. After his death, Colosimo's gang was controlled first by Johnny Torrio and then Al Capone. It became the infamous Chicago Outfit.
Three weeks after his marriage to the beautiful singer Dale Winter, James Colosimo remained giddy, and nervous. Known as “Big Jim” or “Diamond Jim” for his obsession with the gems, Colosimo reigned as boss of a whorehouse empire in Chicago’s Levee vice district. Celebrities, powerful pols and opera performers crowded his Colosimo’s restaurant, with a café-cabaret and separate late-night fine dining room.
On May 11, 1920, Colosimo and Winter set a date for dinner in the city’s fashionable and exclusive Loop area, along the shore of Lake Michigan. But Colosimo phoned Winter to tell her he’d be late, due to a sudden appointment. “Angel, just got a call,” he said to her. “Gotta meet a guy at the restaurant. It’s important.”
Colosimo had his chauffer drive him in his Pierce-Arrow to the restaurant that afternoon. Inside the still-closed restaurant, he asked a porter, Joe Gabrela, if he’d seen a man looking for him. Gabrela said no. Colosimo entered his office. Soon, Gabrela noticed a man in the dining room. “Mr. Colosimo’s in the office,” he told the man before leaving the room. Then the restaurant’s accountant noticed Colosimo exit the office. About a minute later, he heard a gunshot.
Colosimo had just peered out a windowed door to the large foyer of his café toward the street, when a gunman strode behind him and fired a .38-caliber revolver into the base of his brain, killing him instantly. The suspect fled, but Gabrela provided police with a detailed description. Chicago Police, acting on tips, shrewdly theorized that Brooklyn mobster-killer Frankie Yale did it. Gabrela did identify Yale in a photo lineup. But as things often wound up in gangdom in those days, his fear got the best of him. Taken to view a live police lineup in New York that included Yale, Gabrela declined to finger him. Practically everyone knew it was Yale, but lack of evidence meant no murder charges filed against anyone.
Johnny Torrio, Colosimo’s righthand man and Yale’s former saloon partner in Brooklyn, leapt into action. He organized an extravagant funeral for his dead boss that would serve as the template for future over-the-top, flowery send-offs for murdered mobsters of the 1920s. In a tribute to Colosimo’s political influence, mourners at the funeral inside his home included the all-powerful First Ward alderman and Cook County Democratic committee member Michael “Hinky Dink” Kenna, the second First Ward alderman “Bathhouse” John Coughlin, several other aldermen, a couple members of Congress, a state legislator and a few judges. About 5,000 people, some holding banners for the Democratic Party and street laborers union, trailed a hearse carrying Colosimo’s body in a $7,500 silver and mahogany casket to Oakwood Cemetery.
When people outside Colosimo’s brownstone watched Torrio enter Kenna’s waiting car, they realized who had moved in as Big Jim’s heir apparent in the First Ward. The Chicago Outfit was born.
Torrio most surely planned Colosimo’s assassination, enlisting Yale, his friend, former business partner and experienced hitman. His motivation to off his boss, acknowledged by history, came from his understanding that Prohibition, effective that January 17, clearly offered massive profits, based on his and Colosimo’s existing model of payoffs to police and local office holders to look the other way from Colosimo’s many prostitution houses in the area. Torrio read that the federal Prohibition enforcement agents would be political appointees, not subject to U.S. civil service rules. In other words, low-paid, low-skilled hacks, ripe for bribery and inattention to liquor smuggling.
But Colosimo, still in rapture with his new bride, disagreed with Torrio, fearing the prospect of federal law enforcement without the protection he was used to. Better to keep things the way they are locally, in the Levee and Loop, he thought. He nixed Torrio’s idea to make a major racket out of bootlegging.
However, it is rarely reported that Colosimo did in fact approve Torrio’s scheme to reopen closed breweries to make and sell illegal, real beer to underground merchants and barkeeps in Chicago. Earlier, before Prohibition, Colosimo invested $25,000 in a brewery operated by one of his saloon owners, Jake “Greasy Thumb” Guzik (one author claimed Guzik garnered his nickname for serving beer with his thumb in the stein). Still, this didn’t go far enough for Torrio. Just as he convinced Colosimo to expand the brothel business to the rising suburbs and towns bordering Chicago, he rightly predicted that unbridled bootlegging of beer and hard liquor would produce far more money — millions. Colosimo was dead set against going much beyond prostitution in Chicago and the suburbs, and his popular restaurant. For Torrio, to build this new domain, his shortsighted boss had to go.
Colosimo, born in 1878 in Palermo, Sicily, moved with his parents to the Windy City at age 1. He would not have reached his height as top pimp in Chicago – the nation’s brothel capital – without Hinky Dink Kenna’s well-paid protection. Hinky Dink and Bathhouse Coughlin represented the First Ward, when wards had two city alderman each, from the 1890s to the early 1920s. Two masters of influence and graft, Hinky Dink, thin, stoic and not quite five feet tall, and the floppish, flamboyant Coughlin, helped themselves to payments, not only from the vice businesses in the Levee, but on everything awarded by the city council in their ward – licenses, permits and utilities needed for hotels, banks, shops and clubs in the Loop as well as federal and state offices, the police, courts and jails. Colosimo, as Torrio after him, served at the pleasure of Kenna as his vice gang underlings and made sure he received his cut of the proceeds. Kenna let the illicit gambling operators and brothel madams run as long as they, as precinct captains, delivered him the votes to win elections.
Colosimo’s links to Hinky Dink started in the 1890s when Jim was an engaging young bootblack inside Kenna’s rowdy Workingman’s Exchange saloon. Kenna took a liking to the kid and later arranged for a city patronage job as a street cleaner. Colosimo ingratiated himself with Italian immigrants and got them to support Kenna. The boss in return promoted Colosimo to street cleaning supervisor. Colosimo organized his Italian men into a street cleaners union.
By the early 1900s, prosperous Chicago had been a bastion of illegal but tolerated prostitution for decades. Colosimo, with Kenna’s approval, made the move to the brothel business by marrying Victoria Moresco, a madam – six years older than Big Jim — of a pair of dollar-a-go whorehouses. Kenna elevated him to precinct captain to deliver the Italians to the polls. Colosimo was second only to Ike Bloom, the First Ward’s vice money bagman, in political power, under bosses Kenna and Coughlin.
In 1909, the dangers of Chicago vice life intruded on Colosimo’s rising stardom. Black Hand extortionists, by letter and then at gunpoint, demanded Colosimo pay them $50,000. He needed a bodyguard. Victoria knew someone who might be right for it – her cousin, Johnny Torrio (born in southern Italy in 1882), who co-owned a saloon called the Harvard Inn in Coney Island, Brooklyn, with Frankie Yale. They offered to pay Johnny’s expenses and put him up in their Chicago brownstone. Torrio, weary of years of gang wars in the New York area, decided to make the move, and sold his share in the Harvard to Yale.
Unsure of the calm, squat, chubby Torrio, Colosimo told him about his problem. Torrio, a veteran Black Hand-style extortionist himself in Brooklyn, assured Big Jim he had it covered. Driving a horse-drawn carriage with two Colosimo gunmen hiding inside, he lured the three extortionists one night with the promise of a payment. The gunmen stood up, shot and killed two of them and mortally wounded the third. Colosimo hired Torrio as his bodyguard. As time went by, Colosimo noticed Torrio’s talent for finances and leadership and delegated responsibility for managing prostitution houses to him as a “male madam.”
In the 1910s, Colosimo rose to vice boss and Kenna’s collector in the First Ward, thanks both to Hinky Dink’s sway with police, judges and prosecutors, and Torrio’s business acumen. With the Loop district’s thriving businesses and fancy residences, the First Ward developed into perhaps the richest area in the whole Midwest.
For Torrio’s headquarters, Colosimo bought a four-story building at 2222 S. Wabash Avenue. Torrio opened an office, a saloon – the Four Deuces – a gambling house and fourth-floor brothel. While there, his old friend Frankie Yale sent him a letter, asking if he could give a 19-year-old roustabout bar worker of his, Alphonse Capone, a job. The teen cut up a man in a fight and needed to leave New York. Torrio made Capone his front door bouncer and then, after seeing his violent side, his bodyguard.
By his death in 1920, Colosimo had unknowingly fathered the shell of an organization that Torrio, and Capone who succeeded Torrio in 1925, would transform into the Outfit, one of the most powerful crime syndicates in American history.

新年快樂! Happy New Year!
I know we’re a little late, but we thought we’d help you celebrate the lunar new year with some queer-themed zodiac content. Find out which queer person from history shares your zodiac sign, and follow the links to learn more with our podcast. Welcome to the Year of the Rat!
Year of the Rat (1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, 2008, 2020)
Jazz-age heiress Henrietta Bingham was known for being the life of the party, including baking her friends themed birthday cakes, and one memorable occasion when she’d played the saxophone while standing on top of a piano. Her lovers included world number one tennis player Helen Jacobs, as well as members of the famously queer Bloomsbury Group: artists Dora Carrington and Stephen Tomlin.
Year of the Ox (1949, 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997, 2009)
Vaslav Nijinsky was considered both the best and most controversial ballet dancer of the early 20th century. He shocked audiences with his skin-tight costumes, and the scandalous themes of his choreography, including depicting masturbation on stage, and had relationships with both men and women.
Year of the Tiger (1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998, 2010)
Known as the godmother of rock and roll, Rosetta Tharpe’s fame brought the music of her black, working-class gospel church to the world. Her sound - especially her distinctive guitar-playing - was a pioneering influence on men like Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, and Chuck Berry. Rosetta never spoke publicly about her sexuality, but friends say she was attracted to both women and men.
Year of the Rabbit (1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999, 2011)
In 1983, Sally Ride became the first American woman to go to space, inspiring hundreds of thousands of young girls around the world. After she retired as an astronaut, Sally worked with her partner Tam O'Shaughnessy, writing science books for children.
Year of the Dragon (1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, 2012)
Andrew George Scott, alias Captain Moonlite, was at various times a preacher, a cotton farmer, a campaigner for improved prison conditions, and a bushranger. He is buried in Gundagai, Australia, alongside his partner James Nesbitt, with whom he was, in his words “united by every tie which could bind human friendship …one in hopes, one in heart and soul…”
Year of the Snake (1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001, 2013)
Mary Shelley is best known as the author of Frankenstein, which she wrote when she was just 19, pioneering the genre of science fiction. Mary described herself as “apt to get tousy-mousy for women” - in particular, her best friend Jane Williams. As well as being queer herself, Mary also supported other queer people, helping her friend Doddy, who was assigned female at birth, leave England and start a new life as a married man in France.
Year of the Horse (1942, 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002)
Harry Allen was the subject of sensationalist newspaper articles through the Pacific Midwest in the early 20th century - partly because he was transgender, and partly because of his tendency to bite cops.
Year of the Sheep (1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003, 2015)
Yoshiya Nobuko was an incredibly successful Japanese author, famous for her stories focussing on relationships between women - both friendships and romances. Nobuko lived for almost 50 years with her partner, Monma Chiyo. In 1957, Nobuko formally adopted Chiyo, because, as she explained “.. the law will not recognize you as a wife. … I aim to get the law reformed.”
Year of the Monkey (1956, 1968, 1980, 1992, 2004, 2016)
Drag king Stormé DeLarverie was considered the mother of New York’s queer community for many decades. Armed with a pistol, she worked as a bouncer at lesbian bars around New York into her 80s, as well as using her talent as a singer to raise money for people living with HIV/AIDS, and women and children suffering domestic violence. Stormé was with her partner Diana for 26 years, and after Diana’s death, carried her photo in her wallet for the rest of her life.
Year of the Rooster (1957, 1969, 1981, 1993, 2005, 2017)
In 1970, drag queen and activist Marsha P. Johnson founded STAR - the Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries - which aimed to provide food, housing, legal aid, and other necessities to homeless trans youth. Marsha was assigned male at birth, but described herself as living life as a woman, and worked tirelessly to support her trans community.
Year of the Dog (1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006, 2018)
Freddie Mercury joined the band Smile - already featuring Brian May and Roger Taylor - in 1970. Over the next three years, Smile became Queen, releasing their first album in 1973, and with Bohemian Rhapsody reaching number one on UK charts two years later. Freddie lived for the last six years of his life with his partner, Jim Hutton, before dying from AIDS-related complications. He also lived with a huge number of cats, and he would phone home to talk with them when he was on tour.
Year of the Pig (1959, 1971, 1983, 1995, 2007, 2019)
19th-century landowner Anne Lister’s diaries chronicle her many lesbian relationships, from 1806 until her death in 1840. The more explicit parts are written in code, with entries often beginning with a summary of her sexual activity from the night before. For the last six years of her life, Anne lived with her wife Ann Walker, with the two women exchanging rings and taking Communion at church together to represent their marriage.

MID Thoughts
So I’m not one of the people with the thought process for typing out a cohesive review so you’ll be catching my train of thought. Sorry.
One of the big things I have noticed in the reviews is that if you like talking to characters you are much more likely to enjoy the game. Talking to people and cutscenes (with rare exceptions) have always been my least favourite part of Nancy Drew games. So for me the major uptick in dialogue and cutscenes made the game miserable. (And yes you can skip them - but on the first play through you want to know what’s going on.) Also the captions need to be fixed before the next game - let me see the whole thing please.
I enjoy the historical aspects of the game. I took two courses relating to the history of witchcraft in uni so a lot of this actually took me back to my Witchcraze class. There was a lot to learn but I was disappointed with the museum - it feels like we could have had several more displays. I also don’t love the way they take text from things and then put it into a tiny straight forward display. I know that for some this might help and it should be included but the control for it should be elsewhere - not in the center of the page when I’m trying to turn pages.
The tour thing should have more clear. The tablet thing took a tick to figure out. As should the offering things to people. In previous games you have to talk to people to exchange objects and I got stuck for a bit.
Maybe the controls are better if you are playing with a mouse but like many adults I rely on laptops exclusively. The whole right click thing was very difficult. As a somewhat petulant side note - I have a touchscreen laptop and previous games have all been pretty touchscreen friendly for most things. This game was not touch screen friendly at all. Something minor is that why did they get rid of the magnifying glass cursor - would that really have been so hard to integrate? It is fitting and cute.
I wish a line had been dropped (maybe it was and I missed it) about how just because something is herbal and all natural that does not mean that it is good for YOU. People are all different and herbal remedies can have major side effects based on personal health. They can also screw with any modern medicines you take. Some can also interact poorly when you are using multiple. And if you don’t have the issue that something is treating that can also cause problems. I know most of us here are adults (I’m pretty sure most everyone here who wasn’t when MID was announced certainly is now), but like kids also play this game and I don’t want them getting medical advice from Nancy Drew.
(Also maybe a line about how yes we don’t burn ‘witches’ anymore but satanism is still bad and magic isn’t real.)
Alicia’s comments about Jason and him being attractive were really uncomfortable. I’m a teacher and I go through so many protect the young ‘ins things that this was really setting off all my alarm bells. I know he’s supposed to be over eighteen but so are some of my seniors - does not make it okay in my book.
The plot was fine - good intrigue and was interesting. Some of it was weird but was explained by poisoning. Some parts were very confusing to me. I have no idea how anyone got underground. How could a teenager just leave their cell phone and peace out (well actually I did have to run out of the school the other day to find a kid who forgot their phone at the end of the day). I did like the scare in the bed - that was cool.
Making the pancakes was fun - I wish you had to switch up the recipes for the special pancakes, that would be more fun in my book. The herbal stuff wasn’t really complicated after you got the first couple done.
I didn’t really think much of the puzzles. Based on the way I played through (maybe different if I go again) they were all clumped up towards the very end.
I didn’t love a lot of the personalities in the games. But, I rarely do so whatever.
I’ve posted before about how the navigation feels like kayaking in DDI - you need to be in exactly the right place to get where you want to go and it takes forever to do so. I found the town center and the museum really difficult to navigate in particular.
Maybe I’m stupid and never quite understood the laurel in the mirror thing - was that supposed to be some type of Lauren look here? Remember how Josiah Crowley put his will in a safety deposit box at a bank - what ever happened to doing that? Or one of those fireproof lock boxes? Also was there any point to the bedroom at either house? Besides the one weird dream and Teegan’s photo?
Also I didn’t like how things kept saying the same thing when you accidentally clicked on them - like I know that has been a thing historically but it’s still annoying.
Also what was with all the papers and stuff on the floor and spread everywhere constantly? I’m a mess and my organization is accomplished by making piles everywhere but even I’m not nearly that bad.
Also, much like TOT - it’s really obvious who the thief is right away.
Another thing is that like, did HER even make this game? No. If I wanted a game from another company I’d give them money. I turn to HER because they have previously had a history of turning out two decent if not fabulous games a year.
I like having more places to explore. I dislike that they take so long to load. Even the game startup takes forever compared to other games.
The lip syncing is really annoying - it seemed like they had fixed that over a decade ago. Also the text and dialogue didn’t match. I am someone who always has captions on things and having them so off is irritating.
TBH I didn’t really feel like the Hardy Boys added much to this game.
Also the whole Carson is friends with the Judge guy reminded me of how I greatly dislike my dad’s so called best friend. Just because a dad is willing to overlook some people’s faults doesn’t mean the daughter is.
Also, the continued mention of Salem being like some sort of small town where everyone knows everyone is so out of place with our knowledge that this does take place in 2019 (or around this time). Salem has a population of over 40 thousand according to the Google. My hometown is somewhere just under 30 thousand which I considered small town, until I moved to the midwest where it is apparently bigger than most cities. I’m not saying someone cannot be a known entity in a town that size (high school sports in America make plenty of teenagers decently known in towns), I’m saying that there should be enough going on in that town that someone else has caused trouble since. The only reason I remember the name of the kid who got hit walking home from school causing the town to put in a very inconvenient traffic light is because we went to the same uni in a different state and he got kicked out twice. (I crossed that stupid highway everyday with zero issues, probably even on the same day he got hit.) I was gonna say something about modern education systems working on bleeding out such backwards thinking but then I remember that we’re literally graduating nazis so like, nvm. (My personal goal as a teacher is to contribute to eliminating innocent ignorance - kids aren’t born knowing things and the adults in their lives need to work on introducing them in positive ways to avoid the distrust, fear, and hatred that stem from ignorance.)
Maybe if they fix the navigation and optimize it better for the vast majority of the population who use laptops with trackpads (I don’t have a desk where the hell am I supposed to put a mouse?) it could nice for the next game. But they also need to work on the character animation and other issues. But then like, do we even know there will be a next time? I know Little Jackalope’s positive media minions have said so. But they also said 2016. And October. And any number of other things that might have been said in good faith but ended up not being true.
I think I just feel meh about everything. This was not the best game ever, and yeah maybe SCK and STFD had some pretty bad graphics too - but it’s twenty years later, I was hoping we’d be moving forward not back. If you want a really positive review look elsewhere. I’m still committed to HER but I realised the other day that very few of my newer friends/coworkers know how obsessed I have always been with HER because I’ve had nothing to talk about. It sorta feels like I’ve lost a part of my personality.
Also the physical copy cover is real shitty. I feel like that 100% could have been fixed if more attention was payed. You can’t even see the name of the game.

BLURB —
extravagant rococo ideals and values flying in stuffy new english brownstones. new money midwestern bourgeoisie encroaching on a kingdom filled with waspy stalwarts of the old vanguard. ennui in the flavour of unending listlessness in a city that never sleeps and never changes. the banality of morality, of existence, of everything and anything. romanticism to fill the gap, romanticism to survive, romanticism to make it all mean something—and never mind the tragedy at the end of the chapter. opulence at the cost of authenticity, hedonism in search of an identity. always forgetting people, never forgetting stories.
HISTORY —
ever since the mid-19th century, the pulitzer family consolidated news in the midwestern region of the united states. they were wielders of the truth and proud journalists, dedicating a great deal of their money to the polish of their craft. unfortunately, in a capitalist system, money wins out and they were soon left beggared by their commitment to their integrity. it wasn’t until the 1950s that they experienced a resurgence through the help of a wily businessman who married into the family and used the prestige of the name to build a profitable news empire, building onto the foundations that was set and setting forth these new innovations.
these new innovations were less than popular, but it was very profitable: camilla’s grandfather pandered to populism and demagoguery, splashing front pages with sensational headlines and less-than-truthful speculation about certain personages. they worked closely with government agencies to shape the narrative in the midwest, engineering much of the red scare during the cold war. soon, the pulitzers themselves began to espouse much of the politics that was being peddled by their papers.
with their influence cemented, the pulitzer family at the ending of the 20th century wanted to expand their empire and decided to break into new england, a veritable fortress populated by well-established newspapers such as the nytimes, wapo, and wsj. although their fortune was considerable, it wasn’t enough to combat the foundation that the establishment papers have built—so they began to look for allies. they found it in multi-billionaire marcos edwin kerby.
and so they peddled off a daughter and a position at their company in exchange for substantial funding. the union, though not an overly joyous one, was one that was built on mutual respect for one another. lucy genevieve and marcos edwin were frank with one another: two children and then they’d be free to do whoever they want, an open marriage that resolved much of their issues and led to a happier-than-most upbringing for the two children they had, even if it was a bit unorthodox at the time.
camilla was born into this setting. the younger of the two, there was never really any expectation on them to pick up a career in news—which they didn’t resent as they found the politics and dynamics of it despicable, thinking that the company was a toxic presence in the political landscape. however, they kept their opinion to themself and kept their mouth shut, not wanting to cross their parents for fear of stoking their anger and becoming disinherited.
their passion, instead, was drawn to the arts. they were very artistic and would often scribble cartoons and the like—but their true love was fashion design. they fell in love with the designs of christian lacroix and dolce & gabbana, the extravagant clothes of the two fashion houses falling in line with their own personal aesthetics. it wasn’t long before they themself tried their hand at fashion design, and they found they had a knack for it.
with their father’s social manoeuvring, they launched their first show at the tender age of twenty-one while still in college. their collection was hailed as one of the best of the season and they were branded as a rising star in the world of fashion.
however, when next season came, they found that the pressure had got to them: they were blocked as what to design and, as the deadline day came nearer and nearer, the panic made them shut down even more. this led them to stealing a fellow student’s designs and showing them off as their own. of course, since they copied it wholesale, the plagiarism was blatant, but due to their family’s influence, the story was suppressed and camilla was now confirmed to be a genuine landmark moment in the world of fashion.
though they still make some of their designs, they find it easier to copy and modify to their heart’s content. at first, they excused themself saying it was only nerves; but as time passed, they had to admit that it was the lifestyle of constant partying that distracted them, taking up precious time that they could have put into working instead. camilla would often be seen at a club, luxuriating with fellow sybarites, and never minding the time. when time to sew up designs came, they’d resort to stealing and modifying others’ work, not wanting to cut down the time for their hedonism.
PERSONALITY —
electric dreams for a twenty-first century virtual teen, watching period dramas as a personality trait, watching marie antoinette (2006) and only noticing the pretty dresses, thinking you’re better than your family for being liberal and thinking you’re better than other liberals you’re not, like, an extremist or anything, actually being politically apathetic bc you couldn’t be fucked to follow politics, not knowing how much a banana costs, not knowing if you’re a millenial or a gen z and not even knowing the difference between the two, wouldn’t eat a tide pod but has that characteristic gen z despair at the experience of life itself, why bother doing anything when the world’s going to end anyways? might as well eat cake!
PARALLELS —
marion kerby (topper), marie antoinette (marie antoinette 2006), francis abernathy (the secret history), lord henry wotton (the picture of dorian grey), roman roy (succession), oscar wilde (real life: 19th century)

The Rehabilitation of Ava Bekker (10/12)
For the next two days, Robin is distant. Something has changed, something devastating and life-changing, and Ava can’t figure out what it is. Every time she asks, she’s stonewalled. It isn’t fair, but life isn’t fair, and perhaps this is her mortal punishment for what she did back in Chicago. She doesn’t much believe in the idea of hell, but this- this is hell. Pure and simple. For the briefest of moments, she was allowed true affection from the strangest of sources, only to have it ripped away from her just as Connor was.
Her comfort becomes Angie. The nightmares don’t end, but Robin doesn’t comfort her the same way, so Ava sneaks out just before dawn to curl up in the wet grass with Angie’s warm body and kiss her dirty fur like she’s a teddy bear. Angie is like her. Past her prime, mostly useless, but still around. Still here. Just being a bit of a burden on everyone.
But on the third morning, when it’s the day of the market, Robin seems bright again as she loads up her truck and tends to the animals. She smiles, and she pulls Ava close in the soft bloom of the morning light as though everything is okay again. And her lips, sweet with balm, are tenderly soft on Ava’s on for the shortest of kisses. It means something more, though, and Ava is eager to move past the iciness that has burned between them out of nowhere.
“Come with me to the market,” Robin says, and means it. “It’ll be a good chance to meet the locals.”
And Ava almost says no, too afraid of being recognized. But she’s desperate for human connection and afraid of being abandoned again, so she says yes and climbs into the passenger seat like it’s the most natural thing in the world.
Connor’s photo remains in the house, although he had become a frequent companion in Ava’s short not-quite isolation. She’s without him, but she’s with Robin, and what is there to be but happy as they drive in the blasting AC, the world open and outstretched before them. Robin almost speaks a couple of times, but she is quiet. And Ava mirrors it, for fear of what happens should she stop.
The market is busy but homely, vendors putting up their stalls and early visitors coming by to pick up their favorites. Usual customers, she realizes, because people already seem to know what they’re coming to purchase. It’s a ritual, a routine that Ava will be settling into, she decides as they begin setting up their tables. She can handle this. It’ll be like having her daily chores at the farm, and like the predictability that occasionally found its way into her old job. She knew her rounds and their timing, knew exactly how long each surgery should take. This will be part of her new life, and it will be with Robin right beside her.
Since everything is in cash, Robin leaves her in charge of the stall at the beginning so she can do her shopping at the others for things not produced on her own. Soap, honey, vegetables. Rounding out their life. It takes a while for the first customer to arrive, and she looks terribly confused to see Ava and not Robin standing here next to the brightly painted sign declaring Robin’s name and the prices of the loaves.
“Where’s Robin?” The woman asks, tilting her head to the side. She seems unsure. “Who’re you?”
Ava pastes on a false smile. “I’m the new farm hand. I’m helping while she does her shopping.”
The woman hums in disapproval. But nonetheless, she peruses the loaves until she finds one she likes, and points at it with a knobbly finger. Ava dutifully wraps it up, states the total ($5), and exchanges the bread for the money. Easy enough. Too easy for her, too easy for a woman who put herself through medical school and became a surgeon. A good one. She was good at surgery, and now she’s selling bread in a small town in the midwest, wearing muddy boots, and watching over the crowds for Robin’s familiar braid hanging down against her red tank top. Ava doesn't like this feeling of being completely alone but surrounded by people, trapped helplessly by leaves of bread with no real purpose anymore. There's the farm, but it's not the same. She didn't grow up wanting this, spending years preparing for it.
She wants to go home, and thinking about it stings in a way it hasn’t since she left. Her nose burns and her eyes start to itch. Before she knows it, she’s crying. A quiet cry, a gentle spring rain, one she works through like her cheeks aren’t wet and her chest doesn’t hurt. But pretending doesn’t make it go away.
No one approaches her at all to buy bread until Robin comes back, her once empty reusable bags full to bursting with all manner of things. They drop. Thud on the concrete. Robin’s hands are now on Ava’s face, brushing away her tears and studying her closely like a puzzle she just can’t put together.
“Do you want to talk about it?”
Ava shakes her head and shuts her eyes, melts into the caring touch Robin gives to her in a promise that things are going to turn out alright, one way or another. She’s safe here, even if it’s not necessarily where she wants to be.
With Robin back, they sell most of their inventory, and she doesn’t think about Connor for the rest of the day. She just thinks about the way the sun looks on Robin’s skin, the surety of Robin’s hands on her back, the infectiousness of Robin’s bright smile. The world becomes Robin, Robin, Robin, and Ava’s not angry about it. She clings to it. And she sees this version of herself, someone who can live like this happily and without pain, and she revels in it. She craves the Ava who sells bread at the farmer’s market and holds Robin’s hand.
It’s only back at home, half-drowning in the warmth, that her eyes return to her photo of Connor and she asks herself if he would ever live like this. She can’t imagine him milking the cows or tending the crops. In her mind, he exists only in the operating room and her bed, otherwise absent of depth. She can’t picture him grocery shopping. Doing laundry. Cleaning out her fridge. He’s not a person, he’s a photo. Two dimensional. Flat. She can easily imagine Robin doing each of those things, and something about the thought is warm and loving. A life. A home. Something real and worth nurturing.
She smooths her fingers over Connor’s faded face, younger without the beard he grew at the end of his life. He looks happy. She didn’t often see him so happy. And so she tucks his photo away and thinks about the mundanity of Robin folding blankets until it’s time to help cook dinner.

Ferrania's New P30 B&W Film
A couple of weeks ago, I got an email from the one of the biggest film photography die-hards out there, Mr. Dave Bias. Formerly a backer for The Impossible Project and most recently teaming up with Film Ferrania . There was a new B&W film on the horizon, and Dave wanted to know if I wanted "in". Having been in the photo industry for the past few years has taught me to never say no to free anything, let alone free film. And with the stroke of a few keys, a secret roll of hand-rolled film, an NDA, and notes sheet were on their way to me.
For those looking at the images in this post and thinking, "Geez, these don't look like something Mat would shoot," let me expand on just how secret this film test was. I knew about as little as I ever have going into shooting a new film. All I was let in on were that it was a black and white film and that it was 50 ASA. Ferrania wanted to see it in a variety of controlled and tricky lighting situations, including studio and night scenes. With a limited number of shots and certainty of the films properties, I decided that the first half of the roll would be dedicated to controlled light in the studio.
The deadline for the test film was swiftly approaching for the 2/1/17 announcement, and my film arrived with only one day to shoot and one to get sent overnight to Ferrania's lab. As quickly as the film arrived, I'd lined up a shoot with a new model at my buddy Tariq's studio.
""But wait, this is 35mm film, what the F$%# am I going to shoot this on?""  -- me, the day of the film test
Suddenly the wall of used 35mm cameras behind my station at Midwest Photo had never become more relevant than that day. Defaulting my decision to my more knowledgeable colleague Mr. Casey Stewart (see below), he recommended the following kit: Nikon FM2, 24mm f/2, 50mm f/1.2, 105mm f/2.5, and 180mm f/2.8. After quickly agreeing and finding a camera bag to load everything into, I was off like a flash to the studio to meet my model, Ms. Farhia Hagi. A couple of poses and lighting setups later, the roll was almost complete, now to try out the film on the downtown Columbus skyline at night.
With the allotted number of shots I was promised by Ferrania completed, I took one final portrait of Casey, and rushed to the darkroom to unload the roll in dim light, and pack it up for shipping. This was the bulk of the film test, until I got scans back from the folks at Ferrania earlier this week. On Wednesday, they unveiled the new film, P30 to the public and their Kickstarter backers for evaluation and purchase.
All in all, I haven't had this much fun shooting 35mm film in years! Was the test perfect? (They never are!) Were there things that could have gone better? (Sure!) Bottom line, if you're an avid film shooter or someone looking to change up their shooting habits, consider trying out P30 from Ferrania. I know I'll be shooting some more very, very soon!
Until next time folks, keep supporting those that support film and get shooting!

A few thoughts on the Ace Comic Con photo-ops
This morning I received an email update from the quite popular Midwest ACE Comic-Con. This year their Marvel line-up looks incredible and I’ve read all their emails, like Cinderella dreaming of the ball. Except like many of my fellow graduates, I can barely afford gas money as of now. Maybe in a year, I’ll save up enough in the rainy day jar to go next time and get a photo-op.
While scrolling through emails at 6am, my eyes jump down reading that Tom Holland has offered another date, Friday, to see his fans during ACE. At that moment I was overwhelmed with a feeling of tenderness for this actor who plays a humble Spiderman. It’s such a kind gesture by Tom to try and meet and accommodate his fans. I could see how he does this because he truly cares about receiving as many fans as possible and seeing them eye to eye. Because of this release right before the weekend, this Friday spot opened up spots for Saturday.
I can’t help but think of a father’s comment on Facebook saying how he and his son waited for ages for some tickets when they first were released and how they were bought in mere milliseconds, and he and his son never had a shot. I only hope that he and his son got the second chance. Hopefully, this tactic sabotaged all the autograph hunters paying to see Tom, just to resell the tickets or sell autographs on eBay, or whatever greedy schemes they’re up to.
After clicking the link and seeing the dropdown for photo-ops, with the name and pictures of the actors and below it listed in a boldly highlighted green, the price. The entire aesthetic makes you start questioning how the industry (not the actors) are handling photo-ops. Looking at it more carefully, I couldn’t help but feel a bit upset with the movie industry. I’m sure there was a manager out there who thought, my actor, is working and needs to be paid for spending time with his fans. Which I understand, time is money and all that, but on the other hand, it doesn’t seem like the kind of relationship an actor or actress would want to have with their fans. Fans pay so much already to see the movies and get through the door to the comic con, it doesn’t seem quite fair that an extra fee is left to simply just tell the artist who inspires you, a thank you, and spend time with them for a moment. What happened to just free human interaction? Something about the entire thing just didn’t sit right with me. After letting the idea roll about in my mind I began to think of Broadway shows. There, the fans crowd about the back door hoping to shake the hand to thank and show the performer the joy and the gratitude in their eyes.
The entire exchange is a vulnerable encounter between two human souls, first the actor to a viewer and then from the viewer to the actor. Singer Shawn Mendes said in an interview once, that these experiences have changed with times, the exchange is far more personal than it once was. We can listen to music in a private setting of going home on the train or doing homework at home in our bedrooms. When we go to the movies or a show, we all sit there vulnerably to see a storyteller’s work inspire and move our hearts to change or be inspired or shaken from our comfort zones.
The commercialization and merchandising of the movie industry can be quite tiresome and notoriously takes out the personal effect that the arts have on the human soul. It bothers me that they have found another thing to sell, the actors' time, but the juxtaposition of the price tag hanging awkwardly below their picture, felt as though these actors had a price, essentially it made me feel a bit troubled, people or their time shouldn’t be for sale in this way. Have we gone too far, buying and selling time?
Moralistically I see a thread to pull at and I couldn’t help but challenge the industry, not the actors or the public, we are just subject to it. Although, I wish there was an alternative this way of interacting with actors. My solution would be to pay the actors the amount they’re due and allow a more open system for these photo-ops, maybe a first come first serve, but not make the public pay at every turn. People simply want to say a humble thank you to the artists, who touched their lives in some meaningful way. To simply encounter the human who so vulnerably put themselves before the camera, giving themselves away for the people who would be watching. Movies are so accessible to such a large demographic, especially of the Marvel Universe, you would think that the industry would try to put fewer obstacles before the humble fans who simply have a great love for their superheroes.
Thoughts, comments, questions, concerns? Please feel free to comment. Just a fellow fan looking for justice.
