A Simple Favor (2018, Paul Feig)
22/12/2023
A Simple Favor is a 2018 film directed by Paul Feig.
The film, starring Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively, is the film adaptation of the 2017 novel A Simple Favor by Darcey Bell.
Stephanie Smothers is a widowed single mother who runs a recipe vlog.
One day Emily calls her friend and tells her that she has a serious problem at work, so she asks Stephanie to babysit Nicky while she is busy, because Sean has flown to London to assist his mother, who is hospitalized with a fractured femur. After two days in which Emily gives no news and does not answer her calls, a worried Stephanie contacts her employer, Dennis Nylon, who hastily informs her that Emily is in Miami.
A fan of Stephanie's blog reports seeing Emily at a gas station in Michigan, then alerts the police who actually find the car near a summer camp and Emily's body drowned in the nearby lake. Detective Summerville, who continues the investigation, reveals to Stephanie that the autopsy on Emily found severe liver damage, a large amount of heroin in her body, and puncture marks in her arm and between her toes. Added to this, Sean recently took out a $4 million life insurance policy on Emily.
Emily is arrested after being hit by a car driven by Stephanie's friend, who was watching the live stream.
The final text explains that Emily was sentenced to 20 years in prison; that Sean's second novel became a New York Times bestseller and that he is a successful professor at Berkeley; Stephanie's vlog reached a million followers and turned into a morning show, and she also became a part-time private detective. Emily is in prison and winning a basketball game.
Filming of the film began on August 14, 2017 in Toronto.
In the United States the film was banned for children under 17 due to the presence of "sexual content, nudity, bad language, drug use and violence".
On the aggregator Rotten Tomatoes the film received 85% positive professional reviews with an average rating of 6.9 out of 10 based on 204 reviews, while on Metacritic it obtained a score of 67 out of 100 based on 40 reviews.
In May 2022 Prime Video announced the start of production of the sequel; the direction will always be entrusted to Paul Feig, Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick will return to the cast, while the screenplay will be written by Jessica Sharzer, who will also cover the role of producer together with Feig.

Physique: Husky Build Height: 6' 1" (185cm)
Howard Leslie Schnellenberger (March 16, 1934 – March 27, 2021; aged 87) was an American football coach with long service at both the professional and college levels. He held head coaching positions with the NFL's Baltimore Colts and in college for the University of Miami, University of Oklahoma, University of Louisville, and Florida Atlantic University. He won a national championship with Miami in 1983. Schnellenberger worked extensively as an assistant coach at the college and professional levels, including as part of the staff of the undefeated 1972 Miami Dolphins.

From his white hair, bushy mustache, blazer-wearing and ever-present pipe made him look more businessman than football coach, he was one sexy man. And with that low voice of his…forget about it. Mmmmmm.

Born in Saint Meinrad, Indiana, Schnellenberger graduated from Flaget High School in Louisville, Kentucky, where he played football, basketball, and baseball and earned a scholarship to the University of Kentucky. Apparently, he was an elite tight end for the Kentucky Wildcats, being named a 1955 All-American.

He was married to his former cheerleader of a wife for over 62 years; they had three sons. I’m projecting here, but I wonder if they’re swingers. Probably not, but if they were, I wouldn’t be surprised. I personally would waste no time in tapping both of them in some serious 3-way action. Again my fruitful imagination is running away again. Schnellenberger died on March 27, 2021, in Boca Raton, Florida, eleven days following his 87th birthday.

Miami Meet Cute
Synopsis: Jack finally meets Zoey’s high school sweetheart.
Series Masterlist
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
She knew it was a mistake to check her Instagram DM requests but…here she was. It was nothing new, a few distasteful messages about how she was a nobody and didn’t deserve Jack. Some were compliments about her looks or asking where she got her clothes. And then there was one message telling her to stay away from him. That dm made her feel uneasy for some reason but she had to push down her discomfort, close the app and get back to her computer.
Jack had been in Boston for work and was coming to Miami for a few days before continuing with his various commitments. This was supposed to be a nice little reset before the realities of a long distance relationship made its way back to center stage. He was traveling to France soon and the time difference was something that neither of them were looking forward to so it would be nice to see him in Miami for the week for a bit of normalcy. And things were normal for the first few days but of course, the universe had a few tricks up her sleeve.
“You know what we should do tonight? We should go out. Do something fun.” Jack was standing in the closet in the guest room where he had to keep his clothes because Zoey wasn’t a fan of sharing her closet space. There were just too many clothes in there and it sounded like a real hassle. This was a much better—safer arrangement.
“We should! You look like you already thought of something, so what do you have in mind?” She was apprehensive because he usually wanted to stay in and spend as much time with just the two of them. And now he looked like he was about to beg her for something. “What is it…”
He sighs, standing up to place his hands on her shoulders with a sly smile. “How would you feel if we went to an NBA game tonight? You like basketball, I like basketball…”
“You just wanna see your boyfriend Jayson, you aren’t slick. Not even a little.” She rolls her eyes and pats his cheek. “I do like basketball though. We’re sitting court side?”
“Um…duh? You know your man has connections.”
“Right. I’m in. But I do have one teeny tiny, super small thing to tell you that really isn’t even a big deal if you really think about it and—“
“Spit it out babe.” He tensed up slightly at her nervous babbling.
The woman closes her eyes to collect herself, kind of dreading this moment but also knowing that he was going to find out eventually. “You know my ex that I mentioned when we were in North Carolina?”
“Your high school sweetheart, first man you ever loved, the man you lost your virginity to and the one you thought you were going to marry? Yeah I remember.” He doesn’t even try to hid the annoyance in his tone. “What about him?”
“He…playsforthemiamiheat.” She rushes out.
His piercing blue eyes turn a shade darker and he asks her to repeat herself. “Go slow this time please.”
“My ex plays for the Heat. Caleb Martin? If you know who that is.”
“I’m a basketball fan of course I know who that is. Why didn’t you tell me your ex is Caleb fucking Martin?”
“Because I knew you would make this a thing and it’s really not a thing at all Jack. We haven’t been together in like 5 years and we’ve seen each other plenty of times there’s absolutely nothing there. But if you don’t feel comfortable going then I totally get it.”
He looks at her for a minute and lets out a sigh. It was embarrassing to admit that his confidence did waver a bit at the thought of seeing her ex but he couldn’t help it. The history that they had scared him and had him on edge but he knew that this relationship with Zoey wasn’t just some little fling. And that little fact brought him right back down to Earth. “Nah, we're going to this game. I’m not worried about Caleb.”
“Good,” she gives him a peck on the lips, “let’s go get ready then.”
Zoey walked at a snail’s pace it seemed, holding Jack’s arm like it was her lifeline. Because that’s essentially what it was. The cameras were already set up courtside, some of the crew whispering things that they probably thought was under their breath even though she heard every word. She knew what they were thinking before she heard their words and it wasn’t anything she hadn’t seen in her messages recently. Not so subtle microaggressions or confused looks weren’t really new to her but in regards to her relationship, the most cherished thing in her life being on public display? That brought out some insecurities she didn’t even know she had.
A tight hold on her, rubbing smooth circles along the back of her hand brought her out of her quickening downward spiral. “You okay, baby?” His eyes were soft, kind, with a hint of genuine concern and so much love that she almost planted a kiss on him right then and there. She simply nodded and acted like the camera wasn’t panning right to them just as the players began to greet each other at halfcourt right before tip-off.
The Celtics had no problem handling the home team. Jayson walked up to Jack to dap him up as soon as the game was over and she swore she’d never seen him smile so big. They really did have a bromance that she was less than enthused about diving into. They shared little giggles and made plans to see each other next time Jack was in Boston. It was honestly kind of sweet and reminded her of her friendship with Mani. Although it was nice to see Jack in his element, in Louisville surrounded by friends and family. That’s the person she fell in love with, that’s the one she saw a future with. And that was the one who would always feel like home. But on the other hand he was this figure in the music industry who earned people’s trust and built these lasting relationships and had a seat in rooms that normal people didn’t even know existed. It was just a world that felt so unfamiliar but in the midst of it all, there he was, this never wavering pillar of peace and comfort. He really did have the of both worlds and Zoey couldn’t believe she was dating her very own Hannah Montana.
The best part about being out and about in public with a celebrity who doubled as her boyfriend was the fine dining experience and immediate dinner service. Between the tamarind braised short ribs, the crab cakes and the sticky date cake, Zoey forgot all of her troubles and the pressure that she’d been feeling about the potential of seeing her past and her present/hopefully future in the same room. She excused herself and headed off to the ladies room and almost bumped into someone on her way back to her table.
“I’m so sor—Zo?” That was a voice she’d recognize anywhere.
“Caleb, hi!” She cleared her throat, looking over at Jack who was very focused on his phone. “How are you? I know it was a tough game but I’m sure it was nice to be out there. Is your ankle feeling better?”
He gives her a warm smile, shaking his head. “I didn’t know you still kept up with my life.”
“Oh I don’t really but you know you’re my dad’s favorite son. He makes sure to keep me updated.”
The basketball player nods again, running his hand over his face. “It’s good to see you Zo. And um—for what it’s worth, I’m really happy to see you happy. Saw you two at the game and I can tell you two have something special.”
She didn’t know why she expected him to act any different. Caleb had always been on her side, rooting for her and cheering her on. The lump in her throat led her into his arms, wrapping him up in a bone crushing hug. “Thank you, that means the world to me. I can’t wait for you to find your person too. You deserve eternal happiness.” They pull away and Zoey steps back into a solid figure standing behind her. He reaches out a hand and introduces himself and Caleb does the same. Tyler Herro is mentioned a time or two and a couple laughs are shared before they head back to their respective seats in the private section. “It was good to see you Caleb.”
He gives her a nod and another smile before walking away. The couple walks hand in hand a few feet before sitting back down. Jack’s reaction and facial expressions have her on the edge of her seat. But his words have her jaw on the floor.
“I liked him. He was nice.”
“Wait…what? I’m sorry who are you and what have you done with the REAL Jackman.”
Jack rolls his eyes and reaches across the table to grab her hand. “I just—I heard everything he said and it really hit me. There’s no reason to try to compete or prove anything because he’s not the one. I am. And he obviously really cares about you and the more people out there that are looking out for you, the better I feel. So yeah he’s cool people.”
“That is extremely mature of you.”
“Mature is my middle name.” He laughs and she raise her eyebrows, really impressed with how this day has gone.
Two days later she was back at work, with Jack in France when she received a bouquet of flowers at the office. She smiled to herself thanking her lucky stars that she found a man so effortlessly kind and romantic, especially when she saw the note that was attached.
Zoey, I’ve warned you multiple times now to stay away from Jack. Clearly you’re not learning your lesson so I’m letting you know now that I’m serious. Leave him alone or I promise life is about to get a lot harder.
The note was definitely not from Jack and whoever this person was had graduated from petty messages to borderline stalking. She didn’t want to worry him and make this a big deal over a silly little note that sounded like some Pretty Little Liars parody so she threw it away along with the flowers and shoved down the uneasy feeling brewing deep within her bones.

From OSI to Taylor Swift: Radio/TV Alum Credits UCF for His Job on the Eras Tour
TJ Lievonen ’18 shares what it’s like touring with the singer and how his time at UCF prepared him for the role.
By Rachel Williams ’15 ’20MA
April 11, 2023
“Since then, I’ve fallen in love with the fact that a big team can go into any venue and set up a stage equipped with lights, audio, video and be ready to produce a show within a matter of hours,” says Lievonen. “The rush of energy before a show starts where the whole team is on the same page, ready to produce the best show possible, is an unmatched, great feeling.”
Since graduating from UCF, Lievonen has had video production jobs with the University of Miami, Palm Beach County Government and Universal Orlando Resort. Now, he’s in his most exciting era yet — touring with Taylor Swift on her sold-out tour as part of the video production crew.
Here, he shares more on this exciting opportunity and how his UCF education positioned him for success.
What does your job on this tour entail?
I am responsible for operating one of 13 cameras during the show. Our team also assists in setting up stage components like a large LED wall that’s 90×27 panels, running thousands of feet of cable and other miscellaneous tasks associated with a stadium show.
What makes the production of this tour so special?
There are multiple stages, which really makes this tour stand out and shine. It’s a very dynamic show with lots of songs and set pieces.
It’s been a dream of yours to tour with a musical artist. Why? How did it feel to land this job with Taylor Swift?
Putting on a concert requires so many different departments to come together — lighting, audio, video, pyrotechnics, carpenters, automation, catering and so much more. If one of them drops the ball, it affects the whole show. But when it all comes together, it’s magic. Taylor Swift puts on one of the best shows out there, both in terms of entertainment and in production value. I was so excited and humbled to be chosen for this job. I actually couldn’t believe it was happening after years of improving myself and my work.
How did your UCF education help prepare you for this opportunity?
At UCF I learned the basics of video production — proper framing and exposure, which are critically important. The Production Fundamentals and Aesthetics of Electronic Media course gave me an amazing foundation and skill set to build from, as well as some techniques that I still keep in my back pocket today. The best experience, though, came from outside the classroom and being involved in the university community. While working at OSI, I advised crew members on aesthetics and environmental concerns to enhance the value of our production. I also worked at UCF Athletics as a camera operator for football, basketball, baseball and softball games. It was an amazing job that gave me unparalleled experience.
What advice would you give to other radio/TV students?
If you’re early, you’re on time. If you’re on time, you’re late. If you’re late, don’t even bother showing up. In the production world, this is very important. Also, work hard — always. There are so many jobs to go around, but those who get them are the ones who put in 110%. Speak less, listen more. We have a lot to learn from mentors in the industry who came before us.
Also, jobs in the concert touring industry often are not posted online. The best way to find similar opportunities is to network with people in the industry, both in person and on platforms like LinkedIn, which is how I landed this gig.
Last but definitely not least – what is your favorite Taylor Swift song?
They are all amazing, of course, but my favorite is “Midnight Rain.”

A surge of anti-Jewish vitriol, spread by a world-famous rapper, an NBA star and other prominent people, is stoking fears that public figures are normalizing hate and ramping up the risk of violence in a country already experiencing a sharp increase in antisemitism.
Leaders of the Jewish community in the U.S. and extremism experts have been alarmed to see celebrities with massive followings spew antisemitic tropes in a way that has been taboo for decades. Some said it harkens back to a darker time in America when powerful people routinely spread conspiracy theories about Jews with impunity.
Former President Donald Trump hosted a Holocaust-denying white supremacist at Mar-a-Lago. The rapper Ye expressed love for Adolf Hitler in an interview. Basketball star Kyrie Irving appeared to promote an antisemitic film on social media. Neo-Nazi trolls are clamoring to return to Twitter as new CEO Elon Musk grants “amnesty” to suspended accounts.
“These are not fringe outliers sending emails from their parents garage or idiots no one has ever heard of. When influential mainstream cultural, political and even sports icons normalize hate speech, everyone needs to be very concerned,” said Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber, a leader in South Florida’s Jewish community.
Northwestern University history professor Peter Hayes, who specializes in Nazi Germany and the Holocaust, said normalizing antisemitism is a “real possibility” when there is a “public discussion of things that used to be beneath contempt.”
“I’m very concerned about it,” Hayes said. “It’s one of the many ways in which America has to get a grip and stop toying with concepts and ideas that are potentially murderous.”
Trump hosted Ye — the rapper formerly known as Kanye West — and Holocaust denier Nick Fuentes for dinner at his Florida home on Nov. 22.
Fuentes was a Boston University student when he attended a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, that erupted in violence in 2017. He became an internet personality who used his platform to spread white supremacist and antisemitic views. Fuentes leads a far-right extremist movement called “America First,” with supporters known as “Groypers.”
On Thursday, Fuentes joined Ye in appearing on the Infowars show hosted by conspiracy theorist Alex Jones. Ye praised Hitler during the interview, ratcheting up the rhetoric that already cost him a lucrative business deal with Adidas.
Jonathan Greenblatt, national director and CEO of the Anti-Defamation League, said it is astonishing and alarming that two of the nation’s leading purveyors of antisemitism were “breaking bread with the erstwhile head of the GOP.”
“I would characterize this as the normalization of antisemitism. It has now become part of the political process in a way we hadn’t seen before,” Greenblatt said. “And that is not unique to Republicans. It is not just a Republican problem. It is a societal problem.”
Most Americans knew it was “beyond the pale” when torch-toting white supremacists marched through the University of Virginia’s campus on the eve of the 2017 rally, said Amy Spitalnick, executive director of Integrity First for America, a group that backed a lawsuit against organizers of the Charlottesville rally.
“What’s even more dangerous than Nazis with torches chanting, ‘Jews will not replace us,’ is when we have political leaders and others espousing those same conspiracy theories in increasingly normalized ways,” she said.
Spitalnick said the virulent hatred that Ye has been spewing can make diluted expressions of antisemitism seem more normal in contrast.
“It’s crucial that we hold Kanye and Irving and these other public figures accountable for their antisemitism. But it means nothing if we’re not also recognizing and holding accountable the ways in which this antisemitism and extremism has seeped into the mainstream of one of our major political parties and become commonplace in our political discourse,” she said.
Trump’s critics and even some of his allies condemned the former president for hosting Fuentes at Mar-a-Lago. Trump claimed that he knew nothing about Fuentes before the dinner and defended his decision to host Ye at his club.
Twitter suspended Ye’s account this week after he tweeted a picture of a swastika merged with the Star of David. Musk tweeted that Ye had violated a rule against inciting violence.
Musk announced last week that his “amnesty” plan applied to accounts that haven’t “broken the law or engaged in egregious spam.” Online safety experts predict that the move will lead to a rise in harassment and hate speech.
Groups that monitor Twitter for racist and antisemitic content say toxic speech already has been on the rise in the month since Musk took over the platform and fired thousands of employees. Content moderators were among those who lost their jobs.
Watchdogs also have rebuked Musk for some of his own tweets, including posting a meme featuring Pepe the Frog, a cartoon character that was hijacked by far-right extremists.
In April, the Anti-Defamation League announced that its annual tally of antisemitic incidents reached a record high last year. The organization counted 2,717 incidents of assault, harassment and vandalism in 2021, a 34% increase over the previous year and the highest number since the ADL began tracking the events in 1979.
Generations ago, famous Americans including Henry Ford and Charles Lindbergh unapologetically expressed antisemitic sentiments in a way that would have shocked Americans in more recent decades. Now, the internet and social media make it easy for world-famous celebrities to normalize anti-Jewish hate.
For somebody of Ye’s status to praise Nazis and Hitler is “escalating from ugliness to a kind of incitement,” Greenblatt said. He noted that Jewish institutions already have to beef up security to protect against attacks such as the one in which a gunman killed 11 people at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh in 2018.
“Our community still has to brace for the consequences of those ideas going mainstream,” Greenblatt said.

Cavinder Twins Drop Video In NCAA’s Face After Miami Hurricanes Women’s Basketball Gets Hit With Ridiculous Sanctions
The U’s Cavinder twins have clapped back! Haley and Hanna Cavinder, who play women’s college basketball for my University of Miami Hurricanes, dropped a TikTok video Saturday in response to the NCAA after the organization unfairly punished the program for what it claims to be NIL infractions. The NCAA didn’t allow student-athletes to make money from their name, image and likeness (NIL) before…

reflections on the 2023 eastern conference finals, game 7
Last February or so, I went on a date with a guy who told me that he just knew the Celtics were going to go all the way this year. But I had watched most of their games to that point. So I pointedly turned to the left from my noncommittal posture — as one does, in a car, on a date — and asked, "really?"
After a few days of texting, I wrote that I didn't want to meet up again, sorry, then blocked him. Weeks and weeks later, I rehashed our entire interaction one more crucial time with friends and consequently realized what had occurred, what he was seeing, how he was seeing me, what he wanted, what may have occurred. What happened then was not so much an unfamiliar feeling but a lasting shift in my self concept. A release. Because something so clear had been said aloud to my face, it would no longer be indulgent to ignore those moments of clarity. It would no longer be indulgent if I were to begin operating differently, seeing people in this way.
Tipsy, the revelation made me curious. ("Curious" is a euphemism for "desperate.") I uncovered that he, too had blocked me so I messaged him elsewhere. "at [the school he attends].//only a little drunk." He saw the message and like a responsible adult, chose not to reply. I would write that this was not my best moment, but I don't seek to assign a moral character something so normal and unambiguous.
A series of Things happened between that last intoxicated message and these last few weeks. If the ignition of my indulgence was experiencing any delay, the universe quickly solved that hesitation in the form of a boy just slightly too old for me. It also reminded me that some boys just haven't a clue in the form of a boy too conceited. It sent me home early. Alas! The curiosity returned.
During the second round, I made a couple of intentionally alternative posts about the games because I knew he was still there, lurking. I understood then but admitted to myself later that I wanted him to respond. "Hey," I hoped I might communicate, "I know I left you hanging but I actually get it now, why don't you text me or something? I'm still that random girl who talked basketball in your car and let you in my fucking room." Still, knowing that none of this was likely to happen, my plan from the beginning was to message something snarky when the Celtics "[went] all the way."
As such, Miami's attempt to stave off the onslaught of romantic lore aching to be recorded, written, and retold became the universe's attempt to wrap this chapter up, force me to grow up and move on because there is nothing desirable this snarky text could possibly bring. Adulthood bore my curiosity, not attraction.

An Accounting of 2022
family ties
I got invited to no funerals this year. Those nearest and dearest to me were healthy. In a year packed with tragic deaths in the news, it feels important to acknowledge that the grim reaper did not come this way.
My family, in general, had a stellar year. Team Toney remains booked and busy. My mom has opted to shift her career away from touring and more events closer to home and US-bound.
Dom's dog, Duke, has become our regular houseguest, and we love it. He seems to love it, too. Has his visiting scratched the itch for us wanting our own pet or just enhanced that desire? 2023 will tell.
I worried about my grandmother's arthritis, for which her complaints (and concerning mishaps) increased over the year, but she is otherwise doing fine. And continues to defend herself against giving up her independence despite the desires of her children.
Get Sun
This year, travel was increasingly back on the table with work trips to Ft. Lauderdale, Miami, and New York. Not quite back to my old and desired schedule of about once a month, but once a quarter—with colleagues also coming to LA several times—is a move in the right direction.
We also went to Greensboro, Minneapolis, Chicago, and San Luis Obispo, but more later.
Beyond that, though, I got out of the house! I saw live music for the first time in two years, with the Smoking Grooves festival on my birthday and a Hollywood Bowl show featuring Flying Lotus, Hiatus Kaiyote, and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson. We will close out the year with The Roots at Disney Concert Hall.
Friends came to town to visit. There was lunch and brunch and birthday get-togethers. I was back to doing many things I did before the pandemic began. I even went to relatively packed movie houses (though I'm much more of a matinee person now than before).
We outside!
ENERGY
Included in being outside was being inside for basketball. If meaningful women's basketball was being played, you could make a pretty good bet in 2022 that we were there. Those trips to Greensboro and Minneapolis were for the NCAA Women's basketball tournament regionals and Final Four -- the first I have ever attended. It was an outstanding experience that I'm confident we will do when the locations and timing allow it.
We upgraded to courtside seats for the Los Angeles Sparks in 2022. Unexpectedly, that meant sitting a couple seats down from Leslie Jones. Jones is a brand new Sparks fan who was encouraged to attend by the ultimately short-tenured Liz Cambage. The comedian also became our basketball friend throughout the season. I sat next to Tacko Fall, Carmelo Anthony, Cedric Ceballos, and a WNBA player agent. We got thanked by Kenan Thompson for giving up our seats so that he and his little girls could sit next to Ms. Jones the day before he got his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
The Sparks had a dreadful season, but the upgrade was a delightful splurge that was well worth the cost.
We also made our way to Chicago for the WNBA All-Star game. It was the first time we'd gone to All-Star where the location was more of an attraction than the festivities. The game was tremendous, and WinTrust is an excellent arena but our touristy Saturday away from all that was outstanding.
Over Thanksgiving break, we made an impromptu trip up the coast to watch the Gamecocks play Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo. Despite all this travel, neither of us attended the University of South Carolina. Such is the pull of Dawn Staley and the program she's built.
It also reflects the importance of basketball—women's basketball, particularly—as a joy maker in our lives. Good things happen when we say yes to hoops.
BREAK MY SOUL
It feels weird to say it was a challenging year at work because so much of it was about progress and growth, but it was. I went through a couple months where Beyoncé's lead single from Renaissance was the mantra for the day. I felt him when Russell Westbrook came into a press conference early in the season like this.
youtube
Part of what made the back half of the year hard was that I got promoted to VP in March. Title changes don't always mean new responsibilities and expectations, but, in this case, and at this Company, it very much did. At this point in my career, figuring out what it means and how to pivot is on my shoulders. No guidebook was coming. So I was uncomfortable, frustrated, and unsure for six months.
I still have those moments now but far less frequently. Something clicked in October. I shifted my approach, allowing me to find the path. I ended the year far more confident about where to go next than those days in August and September humming about people working my nerves.
I'm very proud of the work we accomplished this year and the value it provides. It's corny to say so, but I like what I do, who I do it with, and what we do it for. I have a very sober view of corporate work and the entertainment business, but I like this shit. Even when it's hard. It could be, especially when it's been hard, and I can see the fruits and growth of doing the hard things.
About Damn Time
I quit Twitter. It's been nearly two months, and my brain is recalibrating. I'm a person who has focus. I no longer feel that twitch to scroll aimlessly. I have much more time than I thought I did. There's time for french lessons, letter writing, reading, walks, meditation, and planning.
There's also time for doing nothing. Like, for real, idle brain nothing.
Since probably 2017, I have felt the nudge to get off the bird app, but I was addicted to the dopamine rush. Musk buying the joint and following through on his trollish personality to make terrible choices was the push out the door I needed.
I'm no longer seeking a replacement for the Twitter experience. I don't need it, and it's about damn time I realized that.
Thanks, 2022! It's been real! On to the next!

So a variety of our communication was by means of like basketball analogies. ‘On this scene, you’re doing this and it’s sort of like that second when the championship...’ sort of factor. From Football Star To The Loose Cannon: The Story Of Brian Pillman
TW: Guns , Death, Mentions of Disease
In honor of what would’ve been Brian Pillman’s 62nd Birthday, this article is about his life and career.
Brian William Pillman was born on May 22,1962 in Cincinnati , Ohio to a Welsh woman, Mary. He had a brother named, Phil, and three sisters named Linda , Angie , and Susan. Pillman’s father tragically passed away from a heart attack when Brian was only three months old. As a child , Brian was admitted to the hospital multiple times due to developing throat polyps and having to have multiple surgeries. The only time he would be able to spend time at home was during Christmas. Mary sent her son to a public school so he would be able to spend some time with his friends and soon, he became the only Presbyterian in his Catholic family. Pillman was also an athletic child, participating in various sports such as hockey and basketball. However , Pillman dealt with bullying from other students due to having a raspy voice from having multiple surgeries. Mary encouraged her son to learn to stand up for himself by enrolling him in boxing lessons. Pillman soon found himself excelling at football.
Pillman graduated from Norwood High School in Norwood , Ohio, a suburb of his hometown of Cincinnati. He was a standout as a defensive lineman for Miami University in Oxford , Ohio , and soon being drafted by the NFL ‘s Cincinnati Bengals in 1984. He was a free agent during this time period. Pillman also won the Ed Block Courage Award for his team. He also played for the Buffalo Bills during preseason in 1985. Thus, being released from the team before the season started. Pillman also played football in the Canadian Football League for Calgary Stampeders in 1986. During his time in college, Pillman was roommates with Baltimore Ravens head coach, John Harbaugh. His jersey numbers were 41 and 58.
Once Pillman’s football career came to an end, he stayed in Canada and began his professional wrestling career. He was trained by legendary wrestling promoter Stu Hart and his family in the legendary Hart Dungeon. Nevertheless, Brian made his debut in the Hart Family owned wrestling promotion, Stampede Wrestling in November of 1986. His first tag team partner was Bruce Hart, Stu’s son and the brother of Bret and Owen Hart. Their tag team name was called Bad Company ( not to be confused with the other wrestling tag team called Badd Company. ) . Pillman and Hart won the tag team championship for the promotion in 1987 , their reign ending in 1987. Pillman used his then girlfriend , Trisa Hayes ( soon to be known as Beulah McGillicutty ) , as his sibling to get over with fans and as a Babyface. He left Stampede in 1988 and joined Jerry Jarrett’s Continental Wrestling Association ( CWA ) . He briefly became part of the New Japan Pro Wrestling ( NJPW ) roster in 1989.
Pillman returned to America in June of 1989 and became a member of the World Championship Wrestling roster ( WCW) and earned the nickname ‘ Flyin’ Brian ’ due to his aerial ability and skills as an athlete. He was one of the first wrestlers along with Bobby Eaton to incorporate Lucha Libre skills into his wrestling move set. He held the NWA United States Tag Team Championships along with a wrestler named The Z - Man in February and May of 1990. Pillman soon started a storyline with Barry Windham , who he started to harass while dressed as a character named the Yellow Dog after losing a ‘ Loser Leaves WCW ’ match, thus, Pillman was reinstated. He also held the WCW Light Heavyweight Championship in 1991 and 1992. Pillman soon turned Heel in 1992 . In 1993 , Pillman formed a team with ‘ Stunning ’ Steve Austin ( soon to be known as Stone Cold Steve Austin ) , being known as the Hollywood Blonds. They feuded with teams such as Ricky Steamboat and Shane Douglas , and The Four Horsemen. They separated the same year. Pillman became a Babyface during this time and feuded with his old tag partner.
In late 1994, Pillman joined the Extreme Championship Wrestling ( ECW ) and teamed with Shane Douglas as a part of the talent swap between WCW and ECW. Pillman and Douglas were managed by the ‘ Sensational ’ Sherri Martel. Pillman returned to WCW in 1995 under the name California Brian. This gimmick was scrapped within a week of his return to the company. He soon became a tweener and feuded with wrestlers such as Eddie Guerrero and Buff Bagwell. He also formed a team with Arn Anderson and feuded with Ric Flair. The Four Horsemen soon reunited with Pillman and Chris Benoit being new members alongside Anderson and Flair. Pillman soon developed his ‘ Loose Cannon Gimmick ’ the same year. He returned to ECW in 1996.
Brian Pillman was signed to Vince McMahon’s World Wrestling Federation in 1996. This signing was announced at a press conference along with Marc Mero’s signing to the company. Pillman was on the commentary desk for a period of time due to having a broken ankle. He soon moved into a role as wrestler after going after an unruly fan in June during an episode of WWF Superstars. His major feud was with his long time friend and former tag partner , Steve Austin. During the storyline , he took the side of Austin’s nemesis, Bret Hart. During their feud , the infamous ‘ Pillman’s Got A Gun ’ angle took place. This angle was when Pillman pulled a gun during an interview with Kevin Kelly and Austin visiting Pillman and his family . The WWF Camera Crew and Kelly surrounded the house to protect Pillman and his family during this incident. Austin was soon attacked by Pillman’s friends. Vince McMahon , WWF , and Pillman all had to issue an apology due to the incident.
Pillman took some time off from the company and returned in 1997 to align himself with his long time friends , Bret and Owen Hart , The British Bulldog , and Jim The Anvil Neidhart. They became known as the new Hart Foundation. Pillman was the only member of the faction to not be blood related or married into the famous family. He also feuded with Goldust , with their biggest match having the stipulations of Marlena being Pillman’s valet for a month if Goldust lost and Pillman leaving the WWF if he lost. Pillman won and had Marlena as his valet for a month.
In 1997, Pillman and his wife , Melanie , were in the midst of a hostile divorce. Melanie claimed that this was going to be a wake up call for Brian. They still lived together with Pillman living in the basement. Brian Pillman would be found dead in his hotel room by the maids on October 5 , 1997 in Bloomington, Minnesota. He was 35 years old. Pillman’s cause of death was found to be a heart attack. Thus , Steve Austin explained that this caused by a case of undetected Heart Disease. This condition also killed his father.
Pillman’s legacy lives on for the new generation of fans. WWE Superstar, Lexis King , is the son of Brian Pillman. King is currently signed to the NXT brand.
My Final Thoughts:
Brian Pillman was one of those wrestlers who I call ‘ Once In A Lifetime’ . He had the total package as a wrestler which I love. I wish I could’ve seen him live. I hope this article did him some justice.
Love You All,
- Kay
