Hm, let's go with some Secrets of Salis (MG book 2) content

Most importantly, his eyes were not on her. For now. Astra had to think fast.

A basic fire rune was pretty simple, so far as runes went. Just an X with some squiggles around it. The shape had been the first one the witch had attempted to embroider—a disastrous experiment, though it had yielded great things in the long run. At its most elementary, the rune didn’t even produce that much heat. No more than a candle flame or a handful of sparks.

Keeping her gaze on the guard, Astra began to carve the simple rune into the back of the chair with her thumbnail, right under the ropes that bound her wrists. The lack of her ribbon coat was galling. She supposed whoever her kidnappers were had enough smarts to not leave her with such a powerful weapon. Though, then again, they’d taken the rest of her clothes too, so who knew?

The carving was slow going—she had to keep her movements minute and any noise nonexistent. Once or twice the guard shifted and she was forced to go limp for a time. But then he would turn, allowing her to continue with nothing more than some increasingly frayed nerves.

After some time, Astra completed the last specification squiggle. Heat immediately began to lick against her wrist. The witch bit down a yelp as the tiny flame started its work, burning away the rope binding her arms, but also scorching her skin in the process.

She was used to burns though. What runic engineer wasn’t? As the seconds ticked by, the faintest scent of smoke began to tickle her nose, growing stronger as time went by. Thankfully, the sniffling guard didn’t seem like he’d be smelling anything anytime soon.

Astra had to pick her moment. Her eye twitched as blisters began to form where the smoldering rope touched her skin. The guard was still halfway facing her though. This had to be a surprise—that cudgel could probably open her skull with one blow.

Heat began to lick at her back now, an unfortunate side effect of the chair itself sliding into a state of combustion. The rope was mostly charred by this point; she could break it easily. If only that damn guard would just turn his head.

Look over there, will ya sir? Astra pleaded. The embers would start to crackle soon and she doubted whatever cold the man had was affecting his hearing as strongly as his sense of smell. Ya gotta sneeze. Spirits, gods, I know I ain’t the prayin’ type, but if ya make this man sneeze right now, I just might amend my wicked ways.

Right as the scent of burning hair caught the wind, the guard turned his head to attend to an itchy foot. Hah, no sneeze, religion’s a scam!

Astra strained, embers pressing into her wrists, until the charred rope snapped under her strength. This was finally enough to alert the guard, but by then it was too late.

Taking him by surprise, Astra kicked the cudgel from his hand and wrapped half of the still-charred rope around his throat like a garrote.

“Faumel tes—” The elf’s curses spluttered off as she tightened the rope just enough to threaten his air supply.

“A’right, on your feet, drop ear,” she hissed, giving the rope a yank. The man complied, indicating he spoke her language at least. “You’re a hostage now. Where’s your boss? I’m feelin’ the need for some pleasant conversation.”

“How the fuck?” the elf exclaimed in heavily accented Janazi. He pointed one of his raised hands at the chair, which was now fully in flames. “Sorcerer?”

“None a’ your business,” Astra shot back, though secretly she was pleased her trick was good enough to warrant the confusion. “I need a favor from ya, darlin’.”

The elf strained to look back at her. The moment he lowered one of his hands, she gave him a swift kick to the back of the ankle. “What favor?” he yelped.

“Start screamin’.”

Just for your entertainment, right as this scene is happening, Mashal is elsewhere worried sick about his poor, squishy friend who's probably oh-so scared and alone without her ribbon coat. Ah, parallels make my day!

i wanna gab about preshading and how ive been doing it lately. trying to type longer guides on patreon and HV but let's try a quick and dirty version here and see if that helps me get those posts together better. as far as tools used for this, i use an iwata hp-cs and hp-ch (which are .3 and .2mm nozzle airbrushes respectively) along with gaianotes paints for painting gunpla. proper ppe (nitrile gloves, a well fitting respirator and a spraybooth that moves enough air) are a must when working with lacquers. dont give yourself lung or liver cancer for plamo plskthx. pics are from a mixture of the mg sazabi's WIP and some test junk i was doing with the hguc sinanju.

step 1: primer yer part i like to use colored primers cause it really ups the saturation on the paint you use on it. pink for reds/oranges/yellows, blue for purple/blues, grey or white for whites/greys

step 2: mix your preshade color ymmv on these but personally i like using a darker shade of the main color to do the shading by adding a complimentary color to it. for example, for these parts i mixed brown in to the custom orange color i made. you can use whatever you want though. some folks like using black as a preshade and that's ok! i preshade my orange-yellow paints with pure orange, and blues with either a darker blue or blue with some purple/black mixed in. to goal is to compliment/blend a bit with the color that's going on top.

step 3: go around the edges and panel lines with your dark color, leaving room to fill in with your main paint. hope your hand is steady and your paints are mixed/thinned well! very carefully, go around the part and darken up the edges/panel lines/underside of your parts. i shade anywhere where the "light" might darken up on a real world object but i can't speak to how accurate of a sentiment that is, if that makes sense? it's just what looks 'right' to my eye to do it this way. but the part that's shaded above should serve as a good indicator. here are a few other parts pre-filling in:

i do this this way for three reasons: first and second, im lazy and cheap. i don't want to waste time and paint coating the entire part when i'm just gonna cover it up anyway. third, if i coat the entire part in the preshade color that's going to have an effect on the main color that's going on top. mainly, it's going to make it darker. i don't want that so i landed on shading stuff this way.

step 4: fill in your main color okay so i always do a shitty job taking pictures of this step (that's why there are no sazabi pictures here) but once you have the edges and stuff painted now it's time to take your main color and fill in the primer-spaces. don't go over your preshade lines, just get as close as you can to that line. it's fine if you hit the edge a little, after all this is the topmost layer of color. even if it doesn't turn out perfect, just work with the wabisabi of the whole thing. embrace the shading not being perfectly uniform. after all, things in real life have degrees of variance.

take your time, work with a psi around ~12-15, thin your paints well, and be very gentle on the trigger. i work really really close to the part for this step and have to be very careful to avoid splattering or overspraying. this is probably???? one of the trickier parts of this??? i don't know. when you've been doing this for so long your definition of that sorta changes. if you need extra help, look in to something to help steady your arm/hand while doing this part.

step 5: blending okay, so you've got your shading down, you filled in the rest of the space with the main color and it's feelin pretty good. but. there's one more step. get a little distance from your part and give the whole thing the lightest coat you can manage. the goal is to blend the primary color and shading layer together with one or two very light coats of paint. i'm not trying to cover up the preshading, i just want a very thin layer of the main color to harmonize everything.

see how the preshading isn't so stark now that we've given it those final two coats? i think this is the key to bringing the shading and main layers together. everything feels nice and "finished" now. from here, gloss coat the parts for panel lining and decals or flat coat (or whatever finish you wanna use) it if it's not getting any of those.

and...that's pretty much it. as an aside, glossy finishes tend to make the colors appear darker and flatcoats tend to look lighter but that could just be my eyes being weird.

"Just Ren is fine, Dr. Quinn." Ren replied. "If that is what you prefer."

"I prefer Harley, but Dr. Quinn will do just fine fuh me." Harley gestured to the couch. "Please, have a seat if you'd like." He sat down, hands politely over his lap. "So... How ya feelin' today?"

"I'm fine, thank you. And how are you?"

"Well, I had a big chicken sandwich earlier, so I'd say I'm feeling good right now."

"I... see."

"I didn't make ya uncomftable, did I?"

"No, no, I was... simply caught off-guard."

"I tend to have that affect on people." Harley flipped open her notebook, scribbling down on the pages. "Is there anything you wish to talk about? You did book this appointment yourself."

"I did, but at Nora's request." Ren admitted.

"And you're against it?"

"I don't see myself having a problem."

"Well, let's see..." Harley grabbed a familiar clipboard from her side and flipped over the pages. "You wrote down here that you're a survivor of a Grimm attack."

"Yes, but I believe most people are." Ren said. "Grimm are an unfortunate occurrence in Remnant."

"Oh, I'm aware, sweetie." She flipped the pages down. "But that don't make the trauma any less effective. Bad things happen to good people, but that don't mean it should."

"Have you had other patients who were survivors of Grimm as well?"

"I have, but I won't say anymore." Harley pinched her index finger and thumb together and pulled it across her lips. "If ya get my meanin'."

"I do." Ren said. "I'm sorry."

"Don't be." She scribbled in her notes again. "Too many people are in your position."

"Being survivors?"

"Resistin the help you need." Harley looked him in the eyes. "The best way tah stop a problem is tah nip it before it becomes a problem. But if it does anyways, you get the help you need. You talk tah people, ya talk to a professional, and ya work at it every single day."

"I... see."

"Now, back to an earlier question, if ya don't mind," she smiled, "how ya feelin today?"

Skin

Getting back into the no-picking swing of things has been easy. Although i havent used my acne pads in a while. My skin feels like it needs a break. Same with my body—its been assaulted with massage water, and reached its limit.

Boy has no dry skin at all. What the fuck! He doesnt moisturize, he uses the hottest of water, he works in a dry-ass office three days a week... and hes only three years younger than me. And a man! Why am i so unhealthy lol.

Diet

Is great. Really feelin it tho. I stopped taking my Mg pills for a while. Was great, thought i was cured of constipation, but then it slowly came back. Maybe if i was more religious about eating beans and 0-point foods it wouldnt have. But its too late now. Back on the pills i go. Theyre not giving my guts a jolt anymore at least.

“Gotsta Get Paid” by Rico Nasty

With its vinyl crackles, wax scratches, and smoky, swirly boings, it’s almost hard to believe “Gotsa Get Paid” reunites Rico Nasty with her “IPHONE” producer, 100gecs’ Dylan Brady. There’s nothing hyperpop about this sequel, but the two songs, linked by references to Covid and weed, feel more of a piece than the sonics suggest. It’s clear that the past couple years have been formative for Rico -- she’s got no patience for wasted time and her quest for money isn’t for flashiness’ sake, it’s to pay her kid’s way. In both the complexity lurking the surface of a weed and bands banger and in her delivery (particularly her yen for turning an ‘a’ into an ‘ay’) she reminds me a lot of Danny Brown. “Gotsa Get Paid” is as inspirational as it is angry, Rico surmounting all odds  carrying the weight (of the world, of her money) on her back and “feelin’ like that bitch Dora.”

DV:

On a long drive with my dad a few weeks back I had the aux cord, and put the Grooves N Jams SOTY playlist on shuffle. I told him, Let me know if you don’t like something and I’ll change it. And he never did say anything, I think as a point of pride, but it was during “Gotsta Get Paid” that he kept looking over at me like he was hoping I’d make the decision to change it for him. Because yes, this isn’t the maximalist triumph that “IPHONE" was, but it’s equally jarring and borderline aggressive and packed with jokes. Only this time the beat itself sounds like a comedy record - as if Brady (and Laura Lee?) is trying to match Rico’s energy by using Looney Tunes samples as building blocks. “Gotsta Get Paid” is a little more spacious and a little less hyper than their earlier collaboration, but it’s equally goofy and over the top. And if we’re lucky, it’s a signal that this is still only the beginning of their partnership.
