Towards the end of pachytene, chromosomes have condensed enough to be seen in the microscope as distinguishable threads (see Figure 2.5). (...) During normal meiosis, the chromosomes of a diploid germ cell undergo DNA replication followed by two rounds of division (meiosis I and meiosis II), producing four haploid cells (see Figure 2.5). (...) Diploid interspecies hybrids occur naturally, but they are frequently sterile because their chromosomes cannot pair properly during prophase I of meiosis (see Figure 2.5).

Leaving a Tip
Celebrated by an exhibition at its new building in White City, London in January, the MRC LMS launched a book and website with over 100 interpretations of the phrase ‘A Picture of Health’ gathered from a broad cross-section of society.
As his Picture of Health, Dr Jean-Baptiste Vannier, head of the Telomere Replication and Stability group at the MRC LMS, chose an image highlighting the tips of chromosomes called telomeres. Read why:
“In each of our cells our unique genetic code exists as lengths of DNA sequence assembled as discrete structures called chromosomes. Chromosomes (here stained blue) end in DNA/protein structures called telomeres (red), repetitive sequences that protect genes along the chromosome from degradation. Telomeres can become shorter with ageing, damage through stress and in disease, but they are also restorable. The enzyme telomerase replenishes shortened telomeres by adding DNA sequence. Telomerase is not active in most of our body’s cells, but cancer cells have developed mechanisms by which telomeres are constantly elongated, which is a key process in helping cancer cells to continue growing. Keeping telomeres at their best is a critical feature of healthy ageing. Maintaining the balance between senescence/cell death and tumour formation is bound up with the mechanisms that control telomere shortening and lengthening. Hence, targeting telomere maintenance pathways in cancer is a long-term goal in my field, as we strive to keep humans healthier longer.”

Thoughts Of You: Prequel
-fluff, tiny itty bit of a suggestive thought, before reader and Dahyun started dating!! decided to make a part 2 of this only because I find gay panicking Dahyun cute
Tumblr media
: Dahyun's mind is full of one thing and one thing only, her crush
words 880
non-idol!college student!dahyun x fem!reader
“Okay, I think I get it now, metaphase comes before telophase, right?” You ask Dahyun who sits next to you. Dahyun, however, just stares at you. “Uhhh…Dahyun?”
You’re so cute when you stare at me like that…
You bring your hand up to her face trying to catch her attention, she jumps back in surprise. “Huh? What? I mean! Yes you’re right! Super correct!” Dahyun blurts out, placing her hand on her heart.
Okay, Dahyun calm down. Calm down, deep breathes.
The two of you were studying at your apartment, on the floor because your couch had yet to be delivered. Your roommate had gone out to spend time with their girlfriend, which meant that Dahyun was with you. The two of you were alone. Together.
“Are you sure you’re okay, Dahyun? You’ve been acting a bit off since you got here” You ask placing your hand on top of Dahyun’s rubbing your thumb against her soft skin.
Off? Of course I’m acting ‘a bit off’! I’m in front of a person sculpted by God! Ahhh! She’s touching my hand! She’s! Touching! My! Ha-
“I’m fine, today’s just been a long day that’s all” Dahyun nervously chuckles. You raise an eyebrow at her before getting off the floor and stretching your arms over your head.
Even the way you stretch is so cute!
“Let’s take a break then, I’ll get us something to drink,” You smile at her before walking over to the kitchen and bringing over two water bottles. You sit back next to her with a sigh and another stretch. Your phone goes off and you tilt your head, “who could that be?”
“Oh Dahyun, my roommate said that they won’t be coming back tonight. Apparently the rain is gonna be stronger than anticipated, there’s storm warnings going around”. You get back up and move the curtains to take a peak, the rain was coming down hard, and dark storm clouds covered up the sky. Dahyun walks over sticking her head next to yours to take a look herself, instead she finds herself staring at you instead. “It’s raining heavily, Dahyun. Do you have anything important to do tomorrow?” You turn to look at her, your faces an inch apart.
Ack! Too close! Too close!
“I umm– nooo, nothing important” Dahyun mumbles stepping back a little.
You beam as if a brilliant idea suddenly popped up in your mind, “then you should stay over! Spend the night here and leave tomorrow! Would that be alright with you, Dahyun?”
The way you say my name is just soooo ahhhh-
“I could—I mean yeah sure, I didn’t bring an umbrella with me, I’ll stay yeah…yeah” You chuckle at the response, “okie dokie! I’ll bring you a set of pajamas, and you could take a shower in my bathroom”. You place your hand on Dahyun’s shoulder before leaving to get her a set of clothes.
Her shampoo and her soap— HER SCENT!
Dahyun’s heart is doing flips right now as she dreamily lathers the shampoo on her head. She feels like she’s on cloud nine right now, her thoughts going crazy.
I wish she was here right now…I want her to touch me…lather the soap over my bod- wait- get those thoughts out of your head Dahyun! Ask the girl out first you hopeless romantic!!! Wait is that a Hello Kitty sugar scrub?!?!?!
“Huh?” Dahyun’s eyes are wide when she comes out the bathroom, and sees you setting up your bed.
“I hope you don’t mind Dahyun, my roommate doesn’t want anyone sleeping in their room and our couch still hasn’t been delivered yet… soo we could sleep on the bed together?” You were nervously playing with your fingers, your eyes trained on her feet rather than her eyes.
This is your chance Dahyun take it! Take! It!
“Yeah! No, I don’t mind” Dahyun says with a nervous smile, and the way your face lights up has her stomach doing flips, the good kind.
Soft mattress, soft pillows, soft clothes, everything feels so soft and comfy.
It’s been two hours and Dahyun still hasn’t fallen asleep, lying stiffly on her side, her back facing you. It was only about an hour after the two of you had tucked in when Dahyun had heard your quiet breathes.
Just turn around, she’s asleep, nothing bad could happen, absolutely nothing bad. right?
Dahyun prepares herself, thinking that everything will be fine, she closes her eyes and turns around. She lets out a quiet sigh ready to look at your back before opening her eyes.
Ahhhhhhh!!
Your face was barely an inch from hers, just like when the two of you were looking out the window earlier. A soft groan leaves your lips, “Dahyun…” you mumbled under your breath.
OH MAY GAWD SO CUTE I’M GONNA DIE—
“Y-yes, Y/N” Both of you inched a little closer.
“It’s cold…is it okay if we snuggle up?” An eye-closed mumble.
“I don’t mind…” And you’re even closer to her now, wrapping an arm around her as Dahyun laid her head a breath away from your neck.
“Hmm…tis feels nice”
I AM CUDDLING WITH HER I AM CUDDLING WITH HER IM CUDDLING WITH—
“Thanks for coming over for the study date Dahyun, i really appreciate it”
This… was… a…date?
“Dahyun? Dahyun? Did you fall asleep?”

replication in reverse [podfic]
part 3 of our love is god; near POV of heaven is a place on earth with you
rating: E | category: M/M | chapters: 1/1 | words: 1.4k
Mello mumbles something into his neck, something to the effect of waiting until Near is ready for him to move, but Near only halfway registers it. Golden hair tickles his nose, and he pictures mitosis— prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase— then imagines cytokinesis in reverse. Two cells pushed together until, somehow, their membranes connect, two phospholipid bilayers self-arranging into one continuous structure, cytoplasms mingling. He swallows thickly and longs for something impossible.

USS Sorcerer (NCC-9670-B), Arlington-class long-range fast dreadnought:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Arlington-class reference art via @MarcSherwood8 on Twitter)
The Arlington-class dreadnought USS Sorcerer (NCC-9670-B) started her life as an Odyssey-class dreadnought, one of the sister ships of the USS Enterprise-F. Like her famous sister, the Sorcerer was heavily damaged in the 2411 Battle of Midnight, the climactic battle of the Iconian War, fought above Earth. The Sorcerer lay in spacedock above Mars for several years as subsequent events redirected Federation shipbuilding towards new endeavors. Finally beginning reconstruction in 2412, she saw several planned refit suggestions come and go - first, she was to be rebuilt to Odyssey-class standard, then to the upgraded Yorktown-class refit, then the upgunned Lexington-class subclass of the Yorktown-class. Finally, in 2414, it was decided that the Sorcerer would become the second in the newly designed Arlington-class of long-range fast-response dreadnoughts, to spearhead a new Federation effort to explore the Gamma Quadrant alongside the Federation's allies in the Klingon Empire, Romulan Republic, Tzenkethi Coalition, and the newly peaceful Dominion, as well as follow up on issues related to the Hur'q Crisis of 2411. Under the command of Captain Yanute, the vessel was relaunched on January 1, 2416, the 5th anniversary of the Battle of Midnight.
The Arlington-class long-range fast dreadnought:
As a descendant of the Odyssey-class, the Arlington is one of the largest ships ever built by the Federation; the subclass measures 1041.5 meters long, 385.22 meters at the beam, with a draught of over 200 meters, and a mass of over 7.25 million metric tons. With a crew of over 900, space for a full Starfleet Marine Corps battalion of 800+ members, and an embarked air wing of 400 personnel, the immense long-range vessel is thusly provided with a laundry list of amenities ranging from an internal promenade/mall, a dozen holodecks, two arboretums, two internal pool/sauna complexes, three main social lounges, and dozens of observation areas.
Able to maintain quantum slipstream travel for a full six hours, the Arlington-class combines its impressive speed with some of the heaviest firepower ever added to a Federation vessel. Boasting 29 MkXV phaser arrays, 4 light and 4 heavy MkXV pulsed phaser cannons, and a whopping 14 multipurpose torpedo/probe launch tubes. These tubes are capable of fully automated loading of the full Federation probe range, as well as photon, quantum, and transphasic torpedoes, the latter-most only available in limited quantities due to weapons limitation treaties.
In addition, the Arlington-class carries over the Lexington-class's phaser spinal lance, capable of devastating damage against vessels even larger than the Arlington. The phaser lance has been colloquially nicknamed the "Wave Motion Gun" by Lexington- and Arlington-class crew members, as it's immense energy discharge resembles that of a similarly devastating weapon from a late 20th century Earth science fiction franchise.
The Arlington also plays host and mother ship to an Eagle-class light "parasite" escort, itself a formidable and agile vessel, armed with multiple phaser arrays, four phaser cannons, and four torpedo tubes. A full wing of 60 Federation Aerospace Force Valkyrie aerospace fighters, falling under the command of the vessels' Commander Air Group, rounds out the vessels' firepower.
Defenses consist of a quadruple-layer hyper-capacitor-based metaphasic shield array, a full meter of albative armor, and a full suite of phaser- and microtorpedo-based CIWS systems; the Arlington is also fitted for but not with a Nanotech Molecular Ablative Generator field array, based on technology from an alternate 25th century.

• Civilian cell mitosis guide •
Step 1: Input Genome data into the replicator. If you have done it correctly it will create a "Ding" noise
Step 2: Provide at least one sample of your physical self to the chute in the replicator, this can be anything from your hair, fingernails, spit, cytoplasm, cell membrane or anything of the sorts.
Step 3: Ensure the sentriols are in the right placements (Opposite to each other in the tank) before providing the replicator its spindle fiber. The spindle fiber should go in through the small hole next to the genome input.
Step 4: Closely examine the replicator while in it's metaphase and anaphase. If one or more chromosomes do not split properly to their designated location, call the T cells immediately
Step 5: Once metaphase and anaphase go through successfully, wait 20-22 hours for the replicator to complete mitosis.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Why cancer cells are bad for the body and how to spot them before they complete the mitosis cycle
Why cancer cells are bad for the body:
Cancer cells have the possibility to go rogue and cause chaos by replicating outside of the mitosis program, multiplying quicker than other cells in the body.
Cancer cells also hoard nutrients and starve other places in the body, causing malnutrition and slowing metabolism in other areas of the body while ensuring their own kind can replicate as much as possible
Cancer cells also do not heed the programmed cell death, ensuring their numbers always increase.
Worst of all, cancer cells are not limited to one area of the body, if they successfully go through metastasis, they can and will inflict the whole body with cancer, almost guaranteeing the body's end.
How to spot a cancer cell:
Does the cell inside your replicator look exactly like you? If not, that is a cancer cell.
Does the cell have extra features that a normal cell like you doesn't have (e.g. 3 eyes, 4 arms, 2 heads, ect.)? If yes, that is a cancer cell
Does the cell have any deformities on their physical features (e.g. odd colored eye(s), discolored cell membrane, unusually proportioned limbs, ect.)? If yes, that is a cancer cell
Does the cell struggle to do basic things you can do (e.g. walk, respond to outside stimulus, talk, ect.)? If yes, that is a cancer cell
Does the cell oxidize and consume nutrients unusually quicker than you do, and request more nutrients be delivered? If yes, that is a cancer cell
If one or more of these apply to your newly replicated/currently replicating daughter cell, call the T cells immediately. Do not hesitate, do not panic, do not worry. If you are unable to contact the T cells, quickly let any immunocyte in your area know of your situation and they will help you. Do not risk the body's safety because of your mistake.
During preprophase, the G2 microtubules are completely reorganized into a preprophase band of microtubules around the nucleus at the site of the future cell plate – the precursor of the cross-wall (see Figure 1.30). (...) During prophase, the nuclear envelope remains intact, but it breaks down as the cell enters metaphase in a process that involves reorganization and reassimilation of the nuclear envelope into the ER (see Figure 1.30). (...) Cytokinesis is the process that establishes the cell plate, a precursor of the cross-wall that will separate the two daughter cells (see Figure 1.30).
her stomach is in knots and it feels like a stone has lodged into the pit of her belly. it's not a pleasant feeling, but it reminds her she's still human at least. she isn't afraid of what lies ahead - she's afraid of it not working. there are so many variables and the scientific part of her could point out that it increases the danger beyond measure, but she's trying not to think about that. in a few hours, everything could be over.
beverly is dressed out of standard uniform; she's in an all black ensemble, hair pulled back into a tight bun. with careful precision, data has been attaching pieces of borg tech to her stealth suit and her skin; the stark contrast of the grey against her pale skin makes her a bit uneasy. it isn't connected in any way to her body, only placed in certain points to mimic an assimilated borg. it's inert and there's no chance of it turning against her which is a small comfort; still, the metal feels cold against her hands, her temple. they're meant to emit the same registrations any borg tech would, therefore disguising her as human. as long as she doesn't provoke the hive so to speak, she shouldn't be detected. the metaphasic shielding geordi had rushed is still unknown; they've barely had time to test it. it should afford her time, at the very least, if things go sideways.
she is desperately hoping things do not go sideways.
Tumblr media
she flexes her fingers, watching the borg tech move with her every motion. slung around her waist is a utility belt with several hyposprays loaded with the virus, as well as a phaser; it'll be her only defense and she's just fine with it - a phaser rifle would only slow her down. she needs to move quickly, efficiently. there won't be much time once everything kicks off.
"your false implants are transmitting borg signatures correctly." data says matter-of-factly. "it should not be detectable as a disguise for some time. i've confirmed the installation of the metaphasic shielding into your communications badge; simply touch twice to engage it - though i suggest only as a last resort as it is still currently unstable."
"thank you, data." beverly gives the ghost of a smile. "can you check in with geordi, make sure there's nothing else we're missing?"
not that she doesn't trust geordi to be two steps ahead with the torpedos, the shielding for the ship - he'd floated the idea of trying to extend the transporter lock range for a brief period of time, but she's had no confirmation. at any rate, data leaves and beverly's facade slips a fraction of an inch. she pushes off the edge of the biobed she'd been sitting on, trying to pretend the borg tech strapped to her is nothing more than a costume, nothing more than what she'd wear for a play. it doesn't make it any easier to see.
"i know." beverly replies to jean-luc softly, checking her belt once more to ensure she has everything. it's nervous energy she has no outlet for. "if it were anyone else i'd be terrified i'm walking into a death sentence." and frankly, she still might be. but she trusts jean-luc and his promise to her, to keep her safe, to bring her back in one piece. beverly intends to do what she can to ensure her own safety of course, but the borg are her top priority. the queen herself.
"just promise me you'll have one hell of a sizeable romulan ale waiting for me when i get back."
oh Tumblr...
"Hey."
"Hmm?" Beverly turns her head slowly, her eyes half-shut like she's been asleep instead of beside her while the shuttle crashed.
"Are you hurt?"
Beverly ignores her, staring instead at the cracked transparisteel and the moonlit trees above them. "What happened?"
"We crashed."
"I told you to let me drive."
"Ah yes, because you're a pilot."
"More than you." Beverly lets her eyes shut again.
Adrenaline courses through Kathryn, cold in her chest. Joking is good, not making eye contact is bad, really bad. Reaching for her hand, Kathryn squeezes Beverly's fingers.
"Hey, stay with me."
"I flew into a star once, in a shuttle, did I tell you?"
"You did, you proved metaphasic shield worked." Kathryn rubs warmth into Beverly's cold fingers. "You were very proud of yourself."
"You look worried."
"You're bleeding."
"You're a better pilot than you are a doctor."
Kathryn forces herself to smile, stay optimistic. "Well, help me. Tell me what to do."
Mitosis Stages
-- has four phases
Prophase -- duplicated chromosomes coil up -- nucleus and nucleolus disappear -- spindle apparatus is completed -- chromosomes go to the center of the cell
Metaphase -- centromeres line up on the metaphase plate
Anaphase -- centromeres split -- chromatids move to opposite spindle poles
Telophase -- chromosomes uncoil -- nucleus and nucleoli form -- spindle apparatus is undone -- cytokinesis is complete
