bro im such a sucker for the film crew yes ik they had the littlest ammount of screen time and have virtually no background but whjsjsjs
a headcannon that’s been floating in my,, well,, head is that messalla totally pierces all of the crew’s ears. Cressida and Castor get small hoops, where Pollux gets studs. that info is very important, trust ❤️

@artofmisi uploaded them yesterday, now’s my turn.
Fuchs and Messalla have been living rent free in my brain for years now and I’d like to thank you for that.

Did you know that Messalla Corvinus got Antony's house? Which also may have previously belonged to a proscribed person. I understand that it would be hard for Messalla not to get a haunted house when the entire city is haunted; still, impressive.
Dio 53.27.5:
"When the house on the Palatine Mount which had formerly belonged to Antony but had later been given to Agrippa and Messalla was burned down, [Octavian] presented money to Messalla, but made Agrippa share his own house."
L. Richardson, Jr. (editor), A New Topographical Dictionary of Ancient Rome:
"Caesetius Rufus: a handsome house near that of Fulvia, the wife of Mark Antony, who coveted it and procured the proscription of its owner to obtain it (Appian, BellCiv 4.29; Val. Max. 9.5.4). It may well be that the house of Fulvia in question was that of Antony on the Palatine. This was later given to Agrippa and Messalla Corvinus jointly and burned in 25 B.C. (Cass. Dio 53.27.5). Had it been enlarged by the addition of this second house, this joint ownership would be more understandable. However, see Vicus Caeseti".

In honor of the stabbing season, I humbly share this picture of myself as Messala in a production of Julius Caesar about ten years ago. I also played Popilius Lena, the only Senator NOT involved in the stabby-stab, but there's no picture of me standing off to the side and looking like I'm about to blow chunks. You can just see the hilt of the massive broadsword I got to wear as Messala; it made my walk so freaking butch I got a bit of a crush on myself. Beware the eyes that march!

Valleius Paterculus, 2.69.6
There's something really funny about VP trying to follow the Princeps Preferred™ 'Brutus - redeemable, Cassius - evil' line, but being confronted with enough evidence of Cassius showing mercy that he has to include it but only alongside the old 'yeah okay he was nice this once, but I promise he's actually REALLY AWFUL and he's just being DECEITFUL'.

Messala Corvinus imperatorem suum Cassium praedicabat
or, like, your 20s are for living through a major turning point in history and crushing on your commander so hard that 2,000 years later your loyalty to him is an identifiable thing that will survive history and people will write about it, but god what tragedy and doom, what misfortune it must be to meet the person who'll make such an impression on you so early in your life and at the very end of his, you'll never forget your first-- (plays alt-j at full volume)
