Eyes
Tumblr media
These little guys are the holder of the most complex vision on the animal kingdom! Oh boy, I spend a good time studying about it lol
- He has hexocular vision (each eye having 3 iris and moving independently)
- Wind's eyes are divided into three morphological sections: midband, dorsal hemisphere and ventral hemisphere.
*The Dh and Vh sections have sensitivity to 4 types of polarized light ( 2 diagonals, horizontal and vertical ) which allows a better analysis of the environment in therms of dimensions, perspective, distance, composition... (in other words , he can almost feel the world with his eyes. He uses this to find weak points in his opponents )
*MB is divided into 6 sessions that have 16 types of photoreceptor cells and cells sensitive to circular light polarization (which allows him to see ultraviolet and infrared)
-The image is processed by the eyes instead of his brain, which allows faster reactions
- Wind possesses selective vision, being able to change the "setting" of his eyes in a blink

Human eyesight:

Antennae
- The "feathers" on his head reflect different polarizing and fluorescent patterns that he uses for communication, and in some cases, intimidation
Tumblr media
~~🦞🦞~~
Raptorial armppendage
- Wind's "punches" are as powerful as a 22 calibre gun. Due to the rapid strike, it causes a cavitation bubble generating a second impact ( his claws accelerates 104 km/s in 2.7ms and the bubble generated by the impact can reach temperatures of 4400C which is nearly the temperature of the sun )
Tumblr media
~~🦞🦞~~
Body
- He has a very dynamic swimming style and can swim backwards, head downs and even "walk"

Weight : 42 kg (92,6Ib)
Length : 1,64m (5'4ft)

Legend turning into a rabbit or a merman in front of the rest of the Chain
It hadn't exactly been intentional, nor was it remotely desired, but when Wild had nearly drowned himself, Legend hadn't had much of a choice.
What he hadn't expected was Hyrule immediately pulling out a flute and playing a tune upon seeing him swim up the river with Wild in tow.
"What are you doing?" Legend asked, genuinely baffled.
Hyrule yelped. "This one talks!"
"Do shapeshifting merfolk usually talk?" Four asked nervously.
Sky squinted, his harp already pulled out, before he cocked his head to the side. "...Vet? Is that actually you?"
"Why wouldn't it be me?!" Legend threw his hands in the air, nearly letting go of Wild, who yelped. "Shapeshifting merfolk?? What kind of insanity have you guys run into?"
Warriors burst out laughing. "Aren't you the prettiest thing?"
Legend's face turned redder than his tail. "Shut up! This item comes in handy, thank you very much! We'd be down a cook if it weren't for me!"
Wild sank into the water so only his eyes were visible, the tips of his ears tinged pink in apologetic embarrassment.
"It's certainly a very useful item," Time commented with a smile.
"I'll stick to my Zora armor," Twilight muttered as he chuckled.
"Can I try it?" Wind asked eagerly, running towards the shore.
Legend sighed, dragging Wild to the others. "Sure."
Legend really should have known better. The tidal wave that crashed upon the entire group from Wind's splashing soaked everyone to the bone, and the ensuing water war caused such rivalries that it took a week before the war had settled.

Flared Fins Mer AU Lore Dump
You can find the fic on tumblr and on AO3
Character Breakdowns:
Wind: 8 (Pup) - Tropical Mer
Adult coloring will be Orange with light blue splotches, like a koi fish’s pattern
Fun fact: He and Warriors are, in fact, very distantly related.
Hyrule: 13/14 (Juvenile) - Octopus Mer
Adult coloring: Green with golden freckles all over him
Fun fact: His healing magic is not as strong in this fic, or at least not as developed. Most of his magic
Wild: 15/16 (Juvenile) - Deepsea Mer - Adult coloring: Dark blue with teal lines. The markings on one of his arms are strangely more of a green color, for some reason
Fun facts: His fins are bioluminescent (and his markings as well, when he gets older.) He has giant fins that are good for threat displays but are very delicate. He’s a better fighter then Hyrule, but being in more fights leads to him having a lot of torn fins. Due to being a deepsea Mer, who would naturally have less opportunities to eat, he metabolizes his food well and doesn’t need to feed as often.
Four: 16 (Juvenile)  - Tropical Mer (Based off a beta fish)
Adult coloring: On one side is green fading to red on the fins, the other is blue fading to purple. As a juvenile, he only has the split green and blue
Fun fact: Four absorbed his twin in the egg, which is why his colors are split down the middle. He is the most territorial in the pod. When he and Wild get to know each other, they like to flare their fins at each other to show off and get rid of territorial aggression. Four bites
Legend: 19 (Almost an adult) - Tropical Mer (Based off a Sea bunny, which is a kind of sea slug)
Adult coloring: Light Pink with red markings
Fun facts: He is courting Ravio (A purple sea bunny.) His tail ring functions the same as his pegasus boots, which is why he could catch Hyrule
Sky: 21 (Adult) - Tropical Mer (Based off the flying fish)
Coloring: Red with silver fins and small yellow marks
Fun facts: He is courting Sun. He has a giant pet Grouper called Crimson. (Sky: Crimson is friend, not food!) Crimson is nine feet long and can pull him along faster than most mers can swim. (Groupers really can get that big. They probably aren’t really that fast though.)
Twilight: 23-25 (Adult) - Tropical/Freshwater hybrid
Coloring: Dark green with gray underbelly and thick black marks
Fun fact: His colors are so much duller because of his freshwater ancestry. He can survive in freshwater for a lot longer than others can. Sometimes goes and hunts in nearby rivers. He has an orca tooth necklace that can turn him into an orca. Yes, the Orca is called “Orcie.”
Warriors: 25-27 (Adult) - Tropical Mer
Coloring: Royal blue with orange marks on the ends of his fins. HE has a kind of iridescence to his scales that most Mer consider very pretty
Fun fact: Warriors has a twin, Linkle, who is currently very lost, wandering around in deep sea Mer territory.
Time: Very old (Adult) - Tropical Mer
Coloring: White/silver with thin red and blue line markings
Fun fact: He is mates with Malon, who is a deepsea Mer. Malon prefers to live in the deep, but they visit each other often. Yes, it is weird that a deepsea Mer would take a permanent mate but Malon does what she wants. She thinks it’s very funny that her husband adopted so many kids, and dots on them when she visits.
Worldbuilding:
Very young Mer are called fry. They are a lot more competent than human babies, being able to swim right after hatching, but during the first year of their life, they run mainly on their fish instincts. Fry are not considered super valuable to Mer, because Mer may have up to 20 fry from one clutch of eggs. Very few of survive the fry stage. Often a pod will choose the best looking/biggest fry and focus their energy on them, leaving the others to fend for themselves. (They won’t be chased away or killed, and if one does make it to puphood by themselves, all the better. But smaller pods can’t afford to feed 20 new mouths at once when all of them won’t survive.)
Those that reach a year old are called pups, at which point they shake off the more intense instincts, and become a little more reliant on their guardians. At 12-14 years old, they become juveniles. They have a huge growth spurt, and they turn from their dull pup colors to their main adult colors. Pup colors are usually either neutrals (other than white) or a very desaturated version of their adult colors. They are considered adults at around 20, around which time they gain their makings. They stop aging at around 30 years old, but keep getting bigger.
Tropical Mer stay in their birth pods unless they get a mate and decide to go to their mate’s pod, or decide to try to start their own pods. There are exceptions though, where juveniles/new adults will leave their pod because they don't fit in well.
Mer “Species” are more vague categories. There are tropical, deepsea, fresh water, octopus, etc. Most of them can still interbreed with only a little difficulty, (as long as they can get over their different social practices) so they’re not really distinct species. (Thought sometimes interbreeding can be difficult to achieve, and sometimes those children turn out sterile, like Mules are)
Tropical Mer are territorial, but they do still interact with neighboring Pods and trade at designated market areas. They aren’t isolated. Deepsea Mer are solitary, and Octopus Mer are solitary/only share territory with mates. If you are part of a social species but do not have a pod, you are considered a loner.
For one reason or another, Time ended up taking each of the boys under his fin, so to speak. Four was abandoned by his birth Pod because of his strange colors when he became a juvenile. Twilight went exploring up a river where his Tropical Mer mother could not follow, and couldn’t find her again when he came back. Sky fell asleep as a pup and got left behind when his pod moved on. Due to being twins, Warriors and Linkle were small coming out of the egg, and their pods decided to focus more on their other fry. Warriors never really integrated himself into the pod after that and left early. Things like that.
Mer can’t breathe air. A typical adult Mer can hold their breath comfortably for about 30 minutes though, so they still like to sunbathe on beaches if they can. They have gills on their neck and sides of their chest. Water flows into the neck gills and out the chest gills. The mouth is just for vocalizations and eating. As long as their necks are in the water, they can stick their heads out of the water as long as they want. They have bad eyesight above the waves.
Mer have their own language that needs to be taught to children, but they also have more internal vocalization that does not need to be taught. These vocalizations can get across more specific messages than just emotions, but the meanings aren’t as advanced as language. If you spend a lot of time around a Mer, you will be able to pick up on some of their vocalizations’ more subtle meanings, like discerning “hello” from “good morning/evening/etc.”
Mer are mostly carnivores, and they obviously do not cook their food. They do not scavenge unless they are desperate, preferring to hunt for themselves. Sometimes they eat plants like kelp for variety, but that’s not essential. Mollusk type shellfish (Clams, oysters, ect) are good snacks but aren’t really filling.
Mer that are social sleep cuddled together and all intertwined, to keep themselves from drifting apart while they're asleep. (Less of a fear when sleeping in a cave, but in the open ocean? Many pods have been permanently split on accident because of currents moving them three miles apart in the night)
Hylians exist in this au and they know that Mer exist, but they don't interact much. There’s a language barrier, and Hylians can’t make the right sounds for Mer language and vice versa. There have been exceptions, where one species’ sign language is taught to a member of the other, but this isn’t common. Hylians are at the same level of development as in the LOZ games. They do not have modern science, etc

okay this might be a really weird question, but in Into The Deep, does the cousins' cave have like bedrooms for each of them or are they just subjected to one another 24/7? (you don't have to answer! i just was thinking about it!) - @stabbyfoxandrew
Sort of, yes! There's actually a pretty extensive series of small caves and connective tunnels along the back wall of the tank. Wymack had it constructed that way so as to provide some semblance of privacy to the mers, as well as giving them a place to sleep that would feel safest for them.
In the wild, merfolk pods frequently sleep in shipwrecks, underwater caves or shelter in reefs for safety, as their biggest predators are orcas and some larger species of sharks (mainly great whites and bull sharks). Dolphins can also occasionally pose a threat to baby merlings, despite the fact that they will also sometimes cooperate with merfolk for hunting purposes.
If shelter isn't available, mated pairs and/or families will usually sleep with their tails wrapped around one another, so they don't float away in the current (it's also just for comfort and closeness, like their version of cuddling, so sometimes they'll do it just for that).
As for Nicky, Aaron and Andrew - Nicky and Aaron frequently sleep near each other, often in the same cave (though there is enough space for them to spread out and have their own, which they sometimes do).
Andrew has his own separate cave though - he has trouble sleeping through the night, as well as night terrors. He's accidentally woken Nicky and Aaron both up many times, and eventually decided it was just easier to sleep separately from them (though there are occassions where Aaron wakes up from his own nightmares and comes to sleep next to Andrew anyway.)

the wind masterlist is empty, and it’s also the only one. So let’s fix that!
thanks to @litrllyvoid for the suggestion!
Wind & mer!reader (platonic)
✧・゚: *✧・゚:*
Tridents and Trinkets
After so long of sailing, wind had thought he’d seen everything. Magic, massacres and men turning into boats he found it hard to be genuinely shocked to the point where he was enraptured. But you, defiant as ever, changed that. He remembered the days prior to meeting you being as normal as ever, sailing and adventuring as expected. Tetra had docked the ship at an unfamiliar harbour, on the opposite side of where most ships would usually. The waters here were calm and crystalline, but untraveled. The ordeal struck him as odd, but not worth questioning. The crew still ran for supplies and traded off what they needed to without issue. The day was so successful that they all saw no need to leave before sundown, docking overnight. But Wind could not sleep, something tugged in the back of his mind, urging him to stay awake. He leaned over the railing and stared down into the water, moonlight scattering across its surface as waves lapped at the hull of the boat. Something moved within the water, disrupting its flow, something larger than your average fish. He leaned further over the bannister to get a better look, getting a glimpse of iridescent teal scales, nearly breaking the surface before retreating into the waters. Figuring there was nothing better to do, he snuck off ship and sat on the very far edge of the dock, keeping a close eye on the water. It took him a few minutes before catching you, peering curiously at him a decent ways away in the water. He dug out a small necklace in his pocket, the pearl pendant gleaming in the moon. It was supposed to be for Aryll, but he had more than enough money to buy another, or find something equally as shiny. Right now, there was a person in the water, and he was determined. He held out the small, shining necklace, offering it out to you. You slowly eased closer, fingers wrapping around the shining pendant, the glimmer reflecting in your eyes. Wind meanwhile, was studying you curiously, shimmering scales in patches on your arms and gills on your neck. And of course, the smile you sent him with sharp teeth. He smiled cautiously in return, finding it within himself to not be scared. You dove back into the water hastily, and he felt the wonder in his mind retreat. He stood slowly and walked back to shore only to be stopped by a loud clicking noise. He turned to see you, propped up on the dock, holding out a shimmering set of earrings. They certainly looked to be expensive, but he doubted you minded much, considering you lived in the sea. He took them gratefully, and returned to the ship, no less tired than when he left.
It was weeks before you’d met, and the memory faded. With the constant flow of adventures, merfolk were a surprising and welcome addition, but incredibly, incredibly uncommon. The ship struggled to keep its way as something in the water tried to attack them. It lurched for the ship, trying to tear out boards and people alike. They were putting up a hard fight, but for the first time in a long time, Wind felt as if they might not win. The thought was shoved back harshly as he jumped into action. A trident soared out of the water, embedding itself in the monster’s head. A lightning strike followed soon after. And it was dead. The crew flocked to the side of the boat in confusion. And most of them would be left without answers. But Wind knew better, the sight of the familiar necklace and shimmering scales making his mind out two and two together.
He asked Tetra about it later, the merfolk. And her answer, be it vauge, was enlightening.
“Some merfolk” She started “make deals with sailors, allowing them passage through the water in exchange for fish and other resources of the sort. But a few take other things such as food, potions or jewellery as pacts or favours. Why, what’d you do?”
“I didn’t do anything”
“Liar”
“Ok maybe I did” Tetra’s face was that of unamusement, expectantly looking at him. He sucked in a breath “i may have accidentally made a deal with a merperson”
“What was that?” He sighed, his shoulders hanging “I may have accidentally made a deal with a merperson”
“And?” she motioned for him to go on
“That’s it.”
“That’s it? I thought you- I don’t know? Killed somebody” She laughed in exasperation, not even stopping as he admitted guilt. He sputtered.
“Wh- Me? No” She laughed even harder and he left, sitting on the information he was given. Well it seemed he’d made a deal with a mer… who had a trident and could apparently smite people. Sick.
It was a little less than two weeks when he found you again, albeit under significantly worse circumstances. You’d been caught, your fins curled in the stiff rope of a fishing net, shivering in fear and sputtering, trying to breathe. The two fishermen that caught you laughing among themselves as you were fading. He took their distraction while he had it and carefully cut the rope, caring little for the integrity of the net. He grabbed your limp body and silently prayed that you weren’t dead before putting you back in the water as carefully as possible. Your head poked above the surface and stared back at him, that same beaming smile of sharp teeth before ducking back under the water.
It was more often now that he caught you trailing the ship whenever they were near your water, and swapped trinkets and treasure. He hadn’t meant to make a deal with you, but perhaps this was one of the better mistakes he’d made.

this is the last one before I blink out [this was from like a few months ago]
This was from a dream I had with mer or siren Sun and Moon and this was the Sun scene from my dream it hasn't left my mind in the slightest the background and the river rocks took long enough along with the trees and mer/siren Sun himself I just remember at the end of the dream Sun and Moon get separated, put into an aquarium and what I think maybe? Y/n or myself got a job at said aquarium and that's it I have never felt so happy and disappointed that that's where it left off and never seen again.
