round two of quill-written flash cards! i’m really getting into this now. usually i’m not a fan of making things prettier than they need to be but making these hand-written flash cards noticeably helps me remember things. maybe it’s the care you gotta put into these kinds of cards. who knows?

Yes, meiosis results in four different daughter cells, but when it occurs during oogenesis, only one becomes viable and the other three kinda disintegrate or some shit
Because the cytoplasm, nutrients and shit gets transferred to one cell during division
This shit doesn't happen during spermatogenesis

a busy (but realistic) day in the life
thursday, april 18th, 2024
Tumblr media
this is my busiest day of the week! i have 3 classes that go from 11-12:30, then 2:00-3:30, 3:45-5:00
this morning i woke up at 6:30. last night me had much more gusto than morning me, so i turned on youtube for about an hour to keep me awake. probably a bit of overkill, but some mornings you just have to stay awake.
after getting up and getting ready, i drove to a coffee shop to work on a lab report for my physiology of the cell course. i had to hand write it, so it was quite taxing, but i got some good work done.
Tumblr media
after this, i drove to campus for my reproduction class. we took notes and had some interesting discussions on gender and orientation.
between 12:30 and 2:00 i finished up my lab report and ate lunch. i had chicken and rice, a greek yogurt, and some pita chips. also had a jolly rancher for dessert.
at 2:00 i had my anatomy class. we finished discussing the endocrine system and started discussing the reproductive system
i then has my physiology of the cell course. we discussed genetics and meiosis i and ii, which is review from previous courses but it's a little more in depth.
Tumblr media
after that class, i drove home and had dinner. i had a homemade burger. i took a break for a little bit after dinner and took a mental break. i showered, then started working on my research presentation for a research conference i have tomorrow. i also worked on an outline for one of my letter of recommendation writers for medical school.
finally, i finished up the day with some writing for an eddie munson fanfiction i'm working on. a-is-away is secretly a writer??? go figure. (you can go check it out on ao3 though it's called gap year ;p)
Tumblr media
like i said, this is one of my longer days, and definitely crammed full of studying and assignments. it's almost the end of the semester so i am running on fumes but pushing through.
xoxo -a

Day 77 • 100 Days of Productivity
spent this week doing my trainings required to teach secondary education in virginia! i had a cultural competency training, dyslexia training, restraint and seclusion training (which i hope i never have to use), and child abuse/neglect training. I also have my english essay i'm working on. im analyzing three war poems/stort stories and how they inform civilian understandings about war. i didn't get much feedback during peer review because everyone just thought my draft was better than everyone's so i got no actual feedback about what i should change. luckily i'm doing a 30 min meeting with my prof to discuss and i'll get actual notes lol. right now i'm studying meiosis and genetics because i have a lecture exam on monday in biology.

In regards to the next fic I’m working on… Here are some notes on my interpretation of the plantussy. Featuring a lot of biology, flower talk, and… uh. slugs. 🤞🤞🤞
Very Nsfw below the cut.
(Note: I am not an artist)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For the base structure, I obviously took most of my inspiration from flowers. The Plants (in stampede, at least) have very floral elements, and my personal headcanon is that they have some analogous structures—products of convergent evolution to incredibly different circumstances. (Though don’t get me started on my headcanons vis a vis the genetic engineering that went into Vash and Knives being so human-looking, at least on the outside.) If the (capital P) Plants are (lowercase p) plant-like, they could certainly have analogous reproductive structures. Five petal-like labia that lie mostly flat against the skin ‘bloom’ when aroused due to increased blood flow—filling with fluid and expanding due to turgor pressure. (Main inspiration for the petals: cherry blossom flowers, though something… fleshier than I’m able to draw 🤣) The reproductive structures are contained within, shielded by the petals unless sufficiently aroused. Within the outer layer of petals is an inner layer, which also lies flat until aroused, at which point they twist together to form something analogous to a penis. The way the petals twist together leaves distinct grooves spiraling along its length, which conduct fluid that comes from the interior of the dick—though the internal structure below it that would be analogous to a vagina also produces fluid, which is slightly thicker and stickier than a human’s would be. (There is a LOT of fluid.) (Note: the petals that make up the dick can be separated even if aroused, but the interior is incredibly sensitive, and Vash is prone to overstimulation even if he isn’t touched there.) (Main inspiration: morning glory bud, also the Aelit dildo by Strange Bedfellas.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There are two smaller interior petals that don’t make up the dick, and instead act as labia around the vagina-analogue. (Main inspiration: orchid.) Surrounding the dick, there are several independently-mobile tendril-like structures ending in small bulbs; these serve as hormonal transfer sites—detail below. The center of the ‘flower’ is a dark pink, which lightens to flesh tone at the edges of the petals, though the interior petals are fully dark pink. Maybe with a bit of blue bioluminescence. (They made the man glow in Stampede; what do they expect me to do? NOT make his dick glow too??)
Alright! Now we’re going to talk about invertebrate reproduction! (You come to the invertebrate biologist and don’t expect to get a little bit of a lecture?)
Firstly: Rotifers. Most Rotifers belong to Class Monogononta, and Monogonant Rotifers have a unique reproductive pattern.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Typically, they reproduce asexually, via parthenogenesis, making, by definition, only diploid females. However, when conditions are right (the chemical cues seem to come from crowding, when a population of monogonants gets too high, but it occurs relatively rarely) the usually amicitic (‘not mixing,’ referring to the production of eggs without the mixing in of other genetic material) females will lay eggs that become micitic females. These micitic females produce eggs via meiosis, not mitosis as in parthenogenesis. These eggs are, by definition, haploid. In the absence of fertilization, these eggs develop into males, which are able to fertilize other haploid eggs, creating a new diploid generation which continues to reproduce via parthenogenesis once again. This haplodiploid sex determination system also occurs in many insects, but no other organisms seem to exhibit this pattern of many amicitic generations followed by one micitic generation. This is my headcanon for the way Plants reproduce. It doesn’t have anything to do with how his junk looks but I wanted to talk about it.
Secondly: Terrestrial Gastropods. If you know anything about slug sex, you know it gets pretty fuckin wild. As a self-proclaimed monster dong connoisseur, I would be remiss to not take ideas from them; namely, in this case, love darts. Now, in actual gastropods, love darts are sharp, calcareous or chitinous spines produced by the snail that are coated in mucus that contains an allomone, a pheromone-like compound, that increases the likelihood of successful fertilization. They’re essentially shot into the body of the snail’s mate. Taking the basic idea, though, I’ve mixed that with flower reproductive anatomy to arrive at… uh, I mean. I really need to find a better term but. Love tendrils? Love… stamens? I’ll workshop it. REGARDLESS. They’re essentially independently-moving tendrils with a glandular bud at the end, the purpose of which are to secrete hormones that aid in copulation—essentially oxytocin and dopamine, which then can be absorbed through the skin, giving his partner a… boost.
And that’s my inspiration for Vash’s pussy!! 🤞🤞🤞

posted this in the replies of another post but ill also just make my own post
if youre in school and you find yourself struggling to keep up with note-taking during lecture, i recommend developing a shorthand for handwriting. like i shorten a lot of common words while taking notes (xmsm=chromosome, rxn=radiation, rdav=radioactive, oxm= organism, nrg=energy, btwn=between, usu=usually, w=with, etc) if you're in a class and you know you'll be writing a certain word a lot, just cut it down to 1-4 letters. if you do this, i recommend having a legend at the top of a page where you write down "[this shorthand=this word]" you can also just remove a bunch of vowels from certain longer words if you know they'll still be comprehensible, or just use the first 3-4 letters of certain words if you're sure you'll be able to identify them in context. like when i was taking notes on mitosis and meiosis i just wrote mit and mei.
idk if this is like common practice and most people do it but it took me waaay too long to start doing it and its been a lifesaver, especially as someone who takes handwritten notes.

Do you think a vampire would survive a tumble into the still boiling Chernobyl reactor?
No.
Lead is used to block gamma radiation because of its high density and high atomic number (which is 82).
Carbon (and I'll eat my hat if vampire skin isn't made of carbon) has the atomic number 6. Carbon, when subjected to irradiation, changes colors and will not shield against radiation (unless it's in the form of graphene. Which is not what vampires are).
As an additional note, by all accounts vampires appear to have living cells. They grow scar tissue, and Edward and Joham were able to reproduce, indicating meiosis (the production of gametes) is still happening. If there are cells, then there can also be cancer.
Drop a vampire into the still boiling Chernobyl reactor, or expose them to too much radiation in another manner, and they change color and develop intense cancer.
There's the question of whether venom would be able to heal them from that, I say that depends on the amount of radiation and whether they received help immediately after exposure.

Mermaid Meiosis Pt 2
How do mermaids have kids??? Do they make eggs like fish or are they like mammals and they just birth the baby? If they make eggs then is mermaid caviar technically a thing? If they do birth it then where is it coming out of? And do they make breast milk? With that side note, are the seashells or mermaid breasts a part of them or???
Sincerely, an idiot

(Continued from here)
----
A disagreement? Maria can't help but find herself misjudging the harshness of Megan's previous snapping; it seemed like quite a change in character for it to be caused by a mere 'disagreement'. Maria knows, or believes she knows, that Megan is downplaying it, likely in an attempt to push Maria's attention off of it, to keep her friend from worrying.
While it certainly does not quell her anxieties, Maria pretends that the meiosis is successful, even going so far as to pull her lips into an innocent, clueless smile. If Megan wishes to downplay whatever it was that troubled her, Maria wasn't going to intrude. She knew her boundaries - and, frankly, didn't particularly want to get snapped at again.
The brunette's eyes flick over to the dripping pictures clipped on a line, and she nods her head, forcefully reassuring herself, aiming to rub off that reassurance on her guest.
"Well; it's going well," she answers, tracing the corner of one photo with her thumb, watching the way that the reflected light glides along the slick surface. The photo of interest contains a field of yellow and red wildflowers, the back of the photo still clean, though once it dries, it's likely to be victim to the needless scrawlings of details that have a tendency to show up on the backs of most of Maria's collection.
Photos are a way to preserve memories, moments in time that may be lost in the turmoil of everyday stress. Photos tell a story, a second-long story contained in the flash of a camera, and photos are a portal on their own. But reminders help; a quick note on the type of flower, what time of day the squirrel was spotted, what trail the photo was taken on. Photos are memories, shared. Shown to more than those who were there in the moment; joined with an onlooker's memory, a communicable past.
Tapping the still-damp film with her finger, her smile grows more genuine, tracing the shape of the field, the splashes of color where the red and the yellow fight for territory. "Took it last week. About a mile or so off campus. A boy in my photography class mentioned it, even offered to take me there," she chuckles, oblivious to any implications of the offer, "but I had some time off work, so I decided to go. Maybe I could take you there sometime. Take more pictures."
