While Kroelian SLOWBRO & SLOWKING are based on the Hellenistic aspects of Dionysus, Mega SLOWBRO is based on the Mycenaean Dionysus, who was a god of the wild, of death and rebirth

It is designed after a Satyr, as they are heavily related to Dionysus and are often despicted with him as part of his entourage alongside the maenads

Slowpoke shows the power of simplicity and iteration

Man, how popular is Slowpoke that it gets to have seven forms? It’s base form seems to be based on some odd mix of an… otter and a salamander? And as Slowbro, it establishes the joke that becomes the basis of the rest of its many varieties: it got bitten by a Shellder and ha ha it's so slow-witted it doesn't even notice.

And there's a testament to the creative power of iteration there, because from that one joke we get: tail-bite Shellder, Arm Cannon Shellder, Iron Man Armor Shellder, Crown Shellder and Poison Brain Parasite Shellder, all simple iterations on the same idea. Although, let's honest, none of these things look like Shellder even a little fucking bit. Shellders are oysters, these are clearly snail shells, and it fucking bothers me.

Despite that though I can't help but love these oblivious dumbass pokémon. They look clueless in a really charming way, and I don't know that I would call the designs well-formed as such, they all kinda have that gen 1 and gen 2 Assembled From Plastic Parts look going on, they are a great demonstration of the power of simplicity because whatever else it is, Slowpoke is also iconic.

Also Galarian Slowking is lowkey kinda scary. Like not terrifying or anything, but just... unsettling. Like don't leave me in a room alone with this.

Words cannot express how much fun it is to draw the "No thoughts head empty" expression of these mons. While I never used them in game, I have a huge fondness for them drawing wise. They combine a very simple shape with the more complex shape of the shell and have best of two worlds in their design. I will miss drawing their eyes...
