yume nikki itself is inspired by lsdde, but i feel like its usage of wordless Suggested storytelling may have influenced my house, where you can try to piece together a story just from the spaces you travel- in yn you have multiple worlds like that, the first that comes to mind being the hit and run.

the complete absence, aside from HoL, of house-centric media is not an oversight because despite everything, myhouse really isn't about the house. the "haunted house" isnt the house itself, it's the doom map of the house- the building is irrelevant, what matters is that its the space Tom created. the reason the house's layout repeats itself everywhere isn't because the house matters, it's because that was the layout tom created in the original map that steve decided to update. do you understand THIS? the house isnt alive, the myhouse.wad is alive. there is a distinction and the distinction is crucial. the analog to the house on ash tree lane isnt the house itself, because there is no real world physical house present in the story, since its only about the mod based on said house. the analog to the house on ash tree lane, to This House (skinamarink acknowledgement), to the monster house, is the map.

So. This “formative background” bit makes it sound like Renan names give information on the person’s.... skills? But that doesn’t seem to be the case, if you look at the little info they give you in the materials guide. 

Renan full names are more or less confirmed to be Helganquil code put in place for classification purposes. The meanings of Shionne, Dohalim and Vholran’s names are given in their respective character sheets. Below is a tentative breakdown of the names with their translation.

Like, Dohalim is from the 32nd generation since... when exactly? The establishment of Lenegis as a place of living for Renans? Meaning that that first batch of kidnapped Dahnans with astral artes affinity that became the first Renans would have been 1st generation? That seems to make some amount of sense. If a generation is something like about 25 years give or take, that would mean the First Renans were established on Lenegis something like 800 years ago. Thus, when Alphen was brought to Lenegis, people had been living there for a good 500 years. I dunno about y’all but I’m willing to believe it. 

If that’s the case, we can theorize Naori’s full name to have been Naori <Helganquil for≈20> Imeris Daymore. Isn’t this Fun!

The subject of how female characters are portrayed in mecha rotates constantly in my head after I watch a mecha with at least one noteworthy female and I do want to at some point do a in depth discussion post about this-but at a way later time because there’s a lot of noteworthy shows I have not seen still to really properly comment and critique this part of the genre-but despite this I wanted to talk about Dorothy from Big O rq:

I’ve been thinking about how Dorothy is one of the better supporting females in the genre despite seeing at least one person point she’s a bit of a damsel in distress. I think what helps Dorothy is she’s not always kidnapped, she has a good amount of episodes where she’s the central focus and not helpless, but for every time she’s kidnapped it seems to wrap around with her saving Roger. The biggest examples I can think of this the third Beck episode where Roger is the one who’s kidnapped and Dorothy manages to outsmart Beck despite him originally kidnapping and controlling her twice-making it super satisfying she finally got back at him-and the finale, where somehow Dorothy, without her memories managed to come back online to recuse Roger and aids him in the finale fight. Dorothy’s entire character arc is about her doing her own thing, BEING her own person, so it makes sense why she’s a bit of a subdivision of the regular damsel in distress. She still gets kidnapped but she’s not helpless and usually returns the favor to Roger, making every time Roger *does* have to recuse her seem out of genuine care and not “this girl I like is in danger and helpless!” (especially because Roger didn’t fully realize her feelings for her until the very end)

That said, even if I think Dorothy is a well done take of a otherwise really bad trope that plagues female characters since she does very much have agency, one thing on reflection that does irk me a bit that would’ve made her character a tad more satisfying is if Dorothy *actually* got to properly pilot Big O:

Every time we’ve seen her in the robots it’s only either been she was unconscious/defenseless-I. E. ep 4 and ep 9-or at the aid of Roger. While the latter is more common, and like I said in the finale she is still very important in helping in the finale fight as she uses herself to power up Big O, multiple times before we have seen her capable of being able to pilot it. Big O may like Roger the most, it is his robot, but it also recognizes Dorothy cares about him just as much as it does, so I think it would’ve been cool even if it was for one episode if she got to pilot it instead, whether it be because Roger got injured or kidnapped.

Or maybe I’m just nitpicking a little and really like the idea of “robot operating a robot” since Dorothy is still one of the best supporting females in the genre, but just because they’re supporting doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be allowed to fully pilot the robot at least once. : p

I don't have the energy to write this now, but i've been crying over @/goopterror's jockey dirk au and that led to me thinking about farmer/ranch owner dirkjakes. i was suddenly just overtaken with the need to write this like 30 mins ago so this is very bare bones but i wanna get the general idea down for later. consider: dirk somehow comes into possession of an old farm house from some distant relative. he's like the next in line bc no one before him wants it bc its old and rundown and needs a lot of work, but he decides to take that chance bc he just dropped out of school for reasons i will come up with later and he wants a fresh start. he didn't even know this relative existed, but free land, so why not.

So he's exploring the land to get an idea of like where his property ends and accidentally stumbles into his neighbors side. It's completely abandoned, so it's not a big deal. He ends up finding an even older and more rundown barn. he was going to turn around thinking that was that, but he hears a noise that sounds a lot like a horse. he decides to investigate bc that makes no sense considering how run down the barn in, but what do you know? it's a horse. a very malnourished one, but it's a horse. it takes dirk weeks before he's able to get the horse to come any closer to him. he bribes him with hay, apples, carrots, sugarcubes, anything he can to gain his trust. finally after weeks, he gets closer and he's able to coax the baby to come out and takes him home. by that point, he's made some good progress, enough where there is a safe place for his new friend to live. it's dirk and his horse for a while.

Throughout this, he's making friends and getting closer to a farmer nearby around his same age. Its Jake of course. He lives nearby with his goddaughter, who is in his care. It's Jade (i'll think of why later too). He brings over fresh produce for Dirk while he's fixing up the farm house and barn and helps out when he's not busy with his own farm. he grows produce for a local grocery story and has a good thing going on due to his family having been doing this for a while now.

The thing I've been crying about it Dirk eventually getting things fixed up and expanding and getting more horses. He ends up holding classes for kids and adults, but I want to focus on the kids classes rn. Kids come in to learn how to approach and interact with horses respectfully and small general maintenance that comes with owning a horse, or working with horses. at the end they get pony rides and they hold a bon fire where they get little certificates.

I just want Dirk to grow, make friends, do things he enjoys, find love and just settle for a bit and be okay. Get to the point in domesticity where it's "boring, but in the most exquisite of ways." (x) and just him, jake, jade, and other loved ones gathered around a bon fire just making smores for kiddos and having a really good time. lots of smiles and laughs and dirk being so glad life led him down this path :')

dirk also has like 2 goats, maybe a couple cows too, ducks, chickens, barn cats!!! and like one or two doggos to help with some of the other animals on the farm. its a full fucking house by the time he's done and opens up classes, but it's great and it's full-filling and he's happy!!!!!
