the thing about the pjo series that just like. bugs me a little is the way that percy seems to realize everything 10x faster, especially related to greek myth.

“percy isn’t stupid, why are you pretending that he is-“ I’m not. I’m saying that in the books, he isn’t as tuned into greek mythology. in the books, he goes through a step-by-step process of thinking (that we can SEE) as he grasps concepts at a normal, non-athenian rate. of course he’s not stupid. that’s not what I’m saying at all.

my issue is that because it’s a tv show and not a book- we can’t follow his thoughts. we have no idea what’s going on in his head. we don’t get the mental breakdown that subtly explains what’s going on to us, as readers, as viewers. obviously, we can’t have that, not really. and as experienced members of the fandom, that’s completely fine. we don’t need an explanation. we know what’s happening. we know who that monster is. we know their story.

but to new viewers?

i was watching the most recent episode with someone who hadn’t read the books. totally chill, right? and then percy walks into crusty’s and goes, “I know who you are. you’re procrustes.” with zero build up. and my friend goes, “who?”

he didn’t know who procrustes was. he still didn’t, by the end of the scene. he just knew that he was now trapped in a bed sheet. none of it made any sense at all to him. because guess what? we didn’t get percy’s explanation. and again, we couldn’t really get that. but the writers COULD HAVE made percy and annabeth have a conversation about who procrustes was like they did in the book. they COULD have provided some more background knowledge.maybe little details were thrown in here and there, but there was too little to grasp everything, even if you did know what was going on.

it’s not about “making a character smarter” or “making them less dumb”. it’s about turning a form of media that is known for being so incredibly welcoming and inclusive and well-thought out that ANYONE could pick up a book with no prior knowledge and still follow along and understand into something that feels like it’s only for the kids who took the time to legitimately study greek mythology. it’s about turning a character- who isn’t stupid- who is supposed to be inexperienced and learning with the viewers into someone who knows everything already. the show isn’t meant just for the seasoned fans. it’s supposed to be for everyone. instead, it’s isolating and difficult to follow in the name of getting it all on the screen.

“they could just read the books-“ but they don’t have to???? that’s literally the point of an adaptation. you should be able to follow the plot whether you watched or read it. reading the books doesn’t make you superior, just like watching the show doesn’t make you inferior. don’t be pretentious.

it’s not about percy being stupid, because he’s not. it’s about understanding that sometimes, you have to miss parts of the original story to make it understandable for new viewers.

genuinely really frustrating that people will like. choose to accept the age mistake made in assassin as canon for deathbringer when it actively contradicts older material. like. sorry idk if this is me being unfair here but genuinely like. why would you think it's intentional when deathbringer is described in main series as maybe a year or two older than glory at most, and can canonically not be any older than 9 due to stated timeline facts in the main series.

like. I get not liking glorybringer, i really do. no ship is for everyone. hell, even if assassin specifically makes you feel weird about it, so be it, to each their own. i can undertsnad that too. and yes, the glorybringer fans who think the age gap are canon are also in the wrong. they're being really gross, i don't think it's necessary to disclaim that, that feels given, but like... that only comes to my point still of like, i really don't understand taking a spin-off as canon over the main series. i don't really understand prioritizing later content as canon as opposed to the main work over spin-off as canon. why should a spin-off take jurisdiction just cuz it's newer? i feel like the older the canon is, the more likely it is the newer stuff will make mistakes. to me, in the case of a contradiction, the main series should be taken to? a spin-off is meant to supplement the main series, so shouldn't it only supplement canon that doesn't contradict?

like also, i get being frustrated it isn't fixed, but also. like. i obviously have not worked with a publisher before, but if I was writing for fucking scholastic books, no matter how well fucking beloved my series was, I don't know if I could risk being like "hey. can you pull my books from shelves and e-stores for me so that I can edit one line?" Like. I really don't think there's any reality in which I can make a corporation agree to that kind of thing, no matter what that one line may fuck up about my main story. like it's not even the only mistake she makes in the winglets. she calls deathbringer a rainwing in the flip book, but we're not hailing that as canon in retrospect, right? I don't know. I think it's unfair to presume that she's choosing not to fix it as opposed to it being an improbable to downright impossible thing to ask of a publisher. like yes tui is an incredibly successful author but i really don't know if we can presume she has that much actual sway on her publisher.

it's just really exhausting as a deathbringer enjoyer to feel like if I want to talk about and enjoy his character, and yes, that includes context given in the assassin winglet once you ignore the timeline error, i feel like I constantlyyy have to be saying "yes I think the timeline error is an error. no i don't think deathbringer is 13." like. every time i bring him up. i'm a riptide fan I'm used to it but also it's sooooo tiring to go into a character tag for a guy i like and be swamped with hatred for him and it's so much worse for deathbringer than riptide because in the deathbringer tag I have to deal with being actively accused of excusing gross shit for liking him instead of people just saying that my blorbo is boring.

my overall verdict on the pjo show is that i love it as someone who's familiar with the characters but i don't think i could show it to my younger brother bc he would be the kind of person to call it boring which is a shame bc this is a franchise i really love and wanted to show to him for a very long time

Constantly irritated by tumblr's insistence that people's unwillingness to genuinely engage with classic literature and take the time to understand things like themes, symbolism, the messages a story is trying to convey, etc. is the fault of the students/public

Like, if this a consistent problem that a large percentage of students have, then perhaps it's a failing of how schools try to teach this material and not that somehow 80% of high schoolers are morally opposed to/incapable of understanding literature

I feel like whatever was going on with majima/mirei/katsuya in the early 90s was some sort of complicated bisexual love triangle situation. like majima is majima and katsuya’s handsome and eloquent and absolutely doesn’t seem straight to me, but on top of that it feels like there was some sort of confusing tension between katsuya and mirei, not sure if it was romantic or one-sided or what but. I just KNOW at least one of them was into him. probably both #one way I’m imagining it could’ve went is like #katsuya introduces majima and mirei to one another and mirei crushes on him pretty quick (because she is 19 and quick to do so) #majima doesn’t really particularly have an interest in her- not cause she’s unattractive or anything probably mostly because she’s almost a #because she’s almost a decade younger than him and barely legal. but at some point she confides in katsuya about her feelings for him and #katsuya being the sweet and honorable kinda dude he is acts as a wingman and tries to get majima to go out with her #and eventually majima relents because he doesn’t want to end up admitting to katsuya that he actually had a thing for KATSUYA #and by playing wingman for his good friend mirei majima takes it as him being uninterested and thus doesn’t shoot his shot and yeah #katsuya’s hard to say no to and hey I mean maybe mirei- a civilian- will make his life more capable of Normalcy #she’s conventionally attractive and is a decent enough friend- albeit he didn’t really know what she was like as a person before she was #crushing on him and also. again. she’s 19 and an idol. so inevitably her identity in general is NOT solid yet #almost as if rebounding off a relationship he never even Got- things move insanely quickly with mirei and they’re married in less than a #year. the whole time katsuya is there cheering them on- he’s smart and I think he’d see the red flags when it comes to their ages and #maturity at least but I think that’d become more apparent over time and he’d start to have regrets but #it’s way too late for that. especially when she comes to him bawling her eyes out because she’s found out she’s pregnant and she has no #idea what to do. both for her career and because she’s literally barely an adult she doesn’t want a child at that point but obviously she #knows she’ll feel guilty and- more than that- deep shame for terminating. she’s insightful even at that age and also maybe can read majima #well enough to know that he might take her abortion as a sign for him to book it to no longer cause her anymore issues. katsuya reassures #her cause what else is he gonna do. but of course she’s right and his commitment issues kick in big time and yeah. over the years katsuya’s #the in-between still close with both of them. specifically he’s closer with mirei and they trust one another a lot more than majima with #either of them- just because majima’s Like That and his trust issues create distance easily. nonetheless at some point majima asks him if #he’s been single for so long because he was hung up on mirei and apologizes if he got in the way of them and that leads into some really #long overdue admissions and likely hooking up. but of course majima is STILL majima and again kinda books it because feelings are #inconvenient and their time for something like a relationship has passed (or something like that). #mirei often wonders if things would’ve been better if she’d have ended up with katsuya instead but similar to majima she’s career-focused #now and just wants to value him as a friend regardless of any lingering potential feelings. majima ends up falling hard for kiryu #sooner than later and life just moves on from any romanticism beteeen the three of them- a nostalgic closeness lingers instead #rambling #that was. a lot.
