#inktober day 18: a Polish Winged Hussar. This one was requested, bit in all honesty they were on my list already because they are so damn cool looking. Like a cross between Jason Vorhees, Shredder from TMNT and something from Warhammer Fantasy Battle. But they were real, and between the late 16th-18th centuries formed the shock elite cavalry of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Their wooden wings, decorated with eagle, ostrich, swan or goose feathers clattered noisily as they charged into the massed ranks of the enemy. Time and again during this period they proved the decisive factor in countless battles, often against overwhelming odds. Ballpoint and brushpen on A5 watercolour paper. Veda very kindly arranged for me to do an etching course today. Something I only ever tried once (but enjoyed), at A level many many moons ago. Kill Bill commission in progress, Black Mamba vs Go-Go Yubari. The client wanted this iconic fight scene broken down into a sequence of still images, like a movie storyboard. After some back and forth, we considered doing it as 4 square images, a 9 square grid and finally settled on this 8 panel layout. Each box is 8" x 4", and it's a bit of a challenge fitting in the background details, but I think it's going well so far.
